BY MIKE HANKS SUN NEWSPAPERS The wedding dress and its 25-foot train certainly command attention during a tour of the Princess Diana exhibit now on display at Mall of America in Bloomington. But keep an eye out for the little things that tell as much of her story as the celebrated wedding dress. “Diana, A Celebration” is now on display on the mall’s fourth floor. The exhibit, which runs through June 10, features the famous wedding dress from the July 1981 ceremony, as well as a variety of outfits from Diana’s life in the public eye. Family photos, home video of her childhood, toys and a school uniform from her childhood are all on display daily. One of the small, easy-tooverlook items on display is a prayer book, given to Diana by Mother Theresa. Inside the

Mark Wayne Lindgren, 55, was sentenced Feb. 3 by Judge Daniel Mabley in Hennepin County District Court. Lindgren was convicted in December of hit and run, resulting in death. Lindgren was accused of hitting Dorothy Hanson as she was walking home after dinner with her husband, who was residing at Martin Luther Manor of Bloomington. In sentencing Lindgren,

Robberies FROM PREVIOUS PAGE According to the criminal complaint filed in Scott County District Court, Savage police officers were dispatched 5:45 p.m. Dec. 22 to a silent alarm at a Mediacom cable office in Savage. An employee said a man pushed her to the ground and pointed a handgun at her. He took money from the till, her purse and cell phone. Bloomington police advised Savage investigators that Benjamin matched the description of their suspect and provided a photo of Benjamin for use in a photo lineup. The Mediacom employee identified Benjamin as the man who robbed her, the complaint noted. Bloomington police arrested Benjamin Dec. 27 on behalf of Savage. He was charged Dec. 29 in Scott County with one count of first-degree aggravated robbery.
Bloomington and Edina The Mounds View and Savage incidents occurred two weeks after a trio of incidents in Bloomington and Edina. On Dec. 5 a Bloomington woman reported being robbed outside her home after parking her car at approximately 8 p.m. Upon exiting her vehicle the woman was approached by a man who pushed her into her car, pointed a handgun at her and threatened to shoot her if she did not relinquish her purse. The man grabbed her purse – containing cash, credit cards and a cell phone –

and fled, according to the criminal complaint. On Dec. 6 an Edina woman reported being kidnapped and robbed in the parking lot of Southdale Center at approximately 8:30 p.m. A man approached the woman in the mall parking lot, pointed a handgun at her, pushed the woman inside her vehicle, tied the woman’s hands together and covered her with a blanket. He then drove the woman’s vehicle to an ATM and demanded her bankcard password. The man was unsuccessful in obtaining cash from her account, drove her vehicle back to the mall parking lot and took her purse – containing cash and credit cards – before leaving her in the parking lot, according to the criminal complaint. On Dec. 8 a Bloomington woman reported being robbed outside a Bloomington coffee shop at approximately 5:50 a.m. The woman was leaving the coffee shop when a man ran toward her from a parked vehicle, grabbed her, stuck a handgun into her neck and ordered her to give up her purse. When the woman yelled for help the man placed his hand over her mouth and kicked her legs, causing her to fall to the ground. The man grabbed her purse – containing cash, a checkbook and credit cards – and fled, according to the criminal complaint. Benjamin faces up to 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 if convicted of kidnapping in Ramsey County District Court. He is also charged with one count of first-degree aggravated robbery and faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $35,000 if convicted. In Hennepin County he is charged with three counts of first-degree aggravated robbery and one count of kidnapping. All counts carry a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $35,000 upon conviction.

Did Superman inspire future greatness? As someone who is tolerant of winter, but not fond of it, the above average warmth and lack of snow so far this season has been quite pleasing. I don’t plan a winter getaway annually, but I do find that a break from the cold and snow to be quite therapeutic, even during winters such as this one. I spent such a week recently along Alabama’s Gulf coast – Gulf Shores, to be exact. My mother is retired and spends two months of her winter in Gulf Shores. She leaves after the holiday season and returns in late March. Since it’s an extended vacation, she drives back and forth each year. She doesn’t like to drive alone, hence the invitation to make the drive most winters. I enjoy an occasional road trip, as well as warmer weather, so it’s an easy sell. Gulf Shores isn’t exactly the dream vacation destination of most 41-year-olds, but you won’t hear me complain. I find plenty of ways to keep myself occu-

pied among the numerous retirees that populate the coastline, and given how many people I know or have met who haven’t had the luxury of taking a vacation in recent years due to lost jobs and ever-inflating costs of living, I know I’m blessed to be able to take my turns behind the wheel as mom heads south each January. I see new things with each trip south, but I’d hardly call my Gulf Shores vacations educational. The 2012 Gulf Shores road trip, however, had me pondering a question I can’t answer definitively, although I think I know the answer. My highway reflections began in Metropolis, Ill., home of the Super Museum. Yep, the town that shares the name with
the fictitious city in the Superman comic books is home to the largest collection of Superman memorabilia you will ever find. I had heard of the museum, but never considered visiting it until four years ago, when my first Gulf Shores road trip brought me to the southern Illinois city. Although I was never a big Superman fan, I did collect comic books as a youngster, so I was determined to someday visit the museum that pays homage to Clark Kent’s alter ego. The very short version of the museum’s history: a young boy takes a liking to Superman in the 1960s and makes it his life mission to collect every type of memorabilia imaginable. Today the massive collection is on display in a city that has long celebrated the Man of Steel’s history. The museum doesn’t exist because Metropolis celebrates the pulp fiction icon, it exists because one man had a passion
for a slice of Americana and has pursued it. Operating the museum is not his life’s work, it is a passion he has made time, and money, available to for decades. How many people have that kind of passion about anything? How many people get to act upon it? Not enough of us, I suspect. I enjoyed my museum visit, but didn’t drive away from Metropolis with a newfound enjoyment of Superman’s comic book, television and big screen adventures. I did, however, leave town with a sense of appreciation and awe for one man’s passion and the tourist attraction that exists today because of it. I didn’t expect the history of Superman to have a profound effect upon me, but I have pondered what is and isn’t most important in my life since that Saturday morning not so long ago. Now I have to figure out how to expunge the kryptonite from my day-to-day existence.
No worries here being single on Valentine’s Day Just so I understand this, we have a day designated for the sole purpose of individuals expressing love to their spouses or significant others, but what about the other 364 days of the year? Are people precluded from expressing these sentiments on any one of these days? Many people get blue around this day simply because they happen to be single. One blogger said there are two types of single people. There are the ones who watch movies at home “sulking” and “eating ice cream,” but the second group consists of people like me who couldn’t care less. On that single point I agree,
MICHAEL RICCI Burnsville/Lakeville Community Editor
but the rest of this blog was filled with a bunch of nonsense about how singles can party and get “wasted” at a bar with other singles, suggesting this is the ideal situation in which to be because an “impromptu evening at a bar” is the prefect way to meet somebody new. Sure, when kids ask how their parents met, they can tell them they found each other
stumbling drunk – excuse me, “wasted” – in a bar on Valentine’s Day. Now that is as romantic as it gets. This was not meant to be an indictment of bloggers or the so-called experts, as I read a lot of material with similar content, all of which would be obvious to the average person. But now that I find myself on the subject, I will say that most of these people on this issue have little clue as to what they’re talking about. Since when is being single on Valentine’s Day anything anyone should be ashamed of or pitied? My apathy for Valentine’s
Day is related to the fact I can’t remember the last time I was at all concerned about it, and this applies equally to when I have not been single. Perhaps I have been fortunate in having been involved with women who feel the same as I do toward this Hallmark holiday. I am guessing I’m not the only person. There has to be many, many couples that equally see the silliness of worrying about getting the card, the flowers, the candy, and the nice dinner. Rather than repeat the advice of so-called experts on this subject – who suggest that RICCI: TO PAGE 8

we focus on the positive, show others that we care, focus on other aspects of life, travel, pamper ourselves, and spend our time on a hobby – I prefer to look at the bigger picture. What I hope would be a large percentage of the population, I am more concerned about other pressing issues. And if I choose to express feelings, I certainly do not need Hallmark to do it for me. unable to demonstrate real human affection and is only available for a few weeks out of the year. This Valentine’s Day, I will not be among those sulking or going to a bar to meet someone. Instead, I will be working just like any other day. After work, I will be doing what I typically do, have a few laughs with friends, play hockey at my local ice rink, read, and any number of ordinary daily activities – all with no “poor me” feelings. My advice, along with 25 cents as the saying goes, is to suck it up, walk it off, rub some dirt on it, get over it, and live in the solution. Life goes on.

Driver FROM PAGE 1 Mabley said it is easy to view the case as a homicide rather than a hit-and-run accident resulting in Hanson’s death. The distinction is irrelevant for the Hanson family, he noted. “For them, the consequences are the same.” Lindgren’s conviction and sentence, however, are based upon the proof in the case. “There are certain suspicions about what caused you not to be attentive,” Mabley told Lindgren. If Lindgren’s inattentiveness was the result of alcohol consumption, as was suggested during a victim-impact statement given by Hanson’s daughter, it remains unclear, Mabley explained. “This was, in fact, an accident,” Mabley said. “An accident, not a homicide,” he added, noting accident reconstruction attributed fault to both parties. Lindgren’s attorney, John Tackett, emphasized the circumstances of the accident scene in asking for leniency for his client. Hanson was crossing Old Shakopee Road near 10th Avenue at approximately 7:30 p.m. Oct 21, 2010. It was dark and Hanson was not at a crosswalk when she attempted to cross the street, according to
Tackett. Lindgren may not have been paying attention as he was driving, Tackett conceded, but “I don’t think alcohol contributed to this accident that evening.” Tackett also said he believed that Lindgren did not realize he had struck Hanson that night. “He did not know that he hit Miss Hanson that evening.” Although Lindgren’s vehicle went unidentified the night of Hanson’s death, he realized the next day that he might have been responsible for her death and contacted Tackett. “My client wanted to make a statement that day,” Tackett said, noting that Lindgren agreed to a stipulated facts trial, where evidence is presented by both parties without dispute, and a judge determines guilt or innocence rather than a jury. Lindgren “did not want to put the family through a long, protracted trial,” Tackett explained. “I don’t think incarceration for Mr. Lindgren is the appropriate sentence,” Tackett said. Hanson’s daughter Sandra, of Washington, D.C., provided a pre-recorded victim-impact statement. She noted Lindgren had a prior conviction for driving while impaired and recounted claims that Lindgren had been drinking prior to the accident. “We don’t seek revenge, we just ask for justice,” she said. “We don’t want another family to lose a loved one in this way,” she added.

“Words can’t describe the emotional hit we’ve taken,” she said. “My mother was a good person. “She did not deserve this.” The emotional hit Sandra Hanson spoke of included the death of her father, Robert, who died nine days after Dorothy. Robert had been recovering from kidney disease and medical personnel treating her father agreed that Dorothy’s death contributed to his passing, she said. Lindgren spoke briefly prior to his sentencing. “I think about the accident every day,” he said, attributing it to inattentiveness. He expressed empathy for the Hanson family and said the incident has changed his outlook on life. “This has changed me quite a bit,” he said. “Although it is an accident, I do bear responsibility,” he said in conclusion. Tackett asked that Lindgren be sentenced to home monitoring, but Mabley opted for the county workhouse, with work release. Lindgren was fined $1,666 plus a $78 surcharge and given three years of probation, during which time he is prohibited from consuming alcohol or using moodaltering drugs. He will be subject to random drug tests, Mabley noted. Following the sentencing, Sandra Hanson expressed disappointment with the characterization of the incident by

‘I want to join Dorothy’ Lindgren’s sentencing provides closure to Hanson, her three brothers and their families after the unexpected loss of both parents in October 2010, she said. Prior to the accident, Robert had been hospitalized for kidney disease and had undergone dialysis treatment. The treatment was successful in stabilizing him, and he was undergoing rehabilitation at Martin Luther Manor in an effort to regain his strength, Hanson explained. DRIVER: TO PAGE 21

Mabley. Hanson, who was traveling and unable to attend the sentencing, spoke with family members in attendance. She disagreed with the characterization that her mother was at fault for crossing the road where she did, noting that there is not a crosswalk for Old Shakopee Road at its junction with 10th Avenue. Despite her disappointment with the characterization she was not upset by the sentence. Although she is of the belief Lindgren had been drinking prior to the accident, and doubtful that he was unaware he struck Dorothy while driving that night, she praised the effort of the Bloomington Police Department and the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for their efforts and the evidence they were able to collect in the case.

Birthday celebration ends with arrest at Bloomington hotel BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS A 30-year-old man decided to celebrate his 30th birthday by partying like a rock star at a Bloomington hotel. The party ended with his arrest for criminal damage to property. Bloomington police were called to Comfort Inn, 1321 E. 78th St., at 2:40 a.m. Jan. 29, according to Bloomington Deputy Chief Rick Hart. A hotel employee reported hearing a loud noise on the fifth floor. Responding officers found a damaged picture on the hallway wall near Room 507, Hart said. Officers then heard noise emanating from Room 507, noise that sounded like items being broken, according to Hart. Officers knocked on the door of room 507 and the suspect answered. He was alone in the room and appeared to be intoxicated. He let officers inside, where they found a
counter that was destroyed and a damaged 32-inch television, Hart said, noting the damage was estimated at $1,748.
Gas station robbery Two men, one with a knife, robbed a Super America gas station in Bloomington. The gas station at 431 E. American Blvd. was robbed approximately 9:15 p.m. Jan. 28 when the men approached the counter and demanded cash. One man had a knife, and it was suggested that the men also had a gun, according to Hart. The men took cash from the store and left. One perpetrator was described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches, wearing a black jacket with white detail on its sides, blue jeans, tan shoes, a black stocking cap and gloves. The other perpetrator was described as a black male, approximately 6 feet 1 inch and slender, wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and gloves.
$37,000 in fraud A 28-year-old Bloomington woman was arrested Feb. 1 on suspicion of fraud, accused of procuring approximately $37,000 of credit from her employer. The suspect, employed by Bloomingdale’s at Mall of America, is accused of fraudulently crediting returns to her own financial accounts or generating gift cards she would keep for personal use, Hart explained. The woman had been generating the fraudulent returns for about a year. Her actions were discovered by an internal audit and subsequent investigation by the store’s loss prevention personnel, Hart noted.
Property theft
in Bloomington. The suspect, arrested Feb. 1, was attending a party on the 5200 block of W. 98th Street on Dec. 24 when a 43-year-old Bloomington woman discovered her purse was missing. The woman’s 25-year-old daughter had been at the party and brought people from the party over to the residence she shared with her mother. After they left her mother called her to report the purse was missing, according to Hart. The daughter questioned guests from the party and found the purse in the trunk of a vehicle driven by one of the party guests. Police were called to the scene but guests of the party left before police arrived, Hart said. Nothing was found missing from the purse, but the 43-year-old woman discov-

Making Marines: Graduation The final installment in a series examining training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego BY DANIEL CALLAHAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Even on the temperate California coast, the time between dawn and the sun’s rising still brings with it a perceptible chill to the air. As the sun begins to crest the hills surrounding Camp Pendleton ordinary folks set about their work, one group of Marine Corps recruits are nearing the end of theirs. In near perfect unison, the recruits march across blacktop to take their places for a ceremony they’ve waited for since they began training more than 50 days earlier. This morning makes the formal review and graduation a few days hence seem almost a formality. Today is the day they receive a symbol they’ve been accepted. Accepted into the brotherhood of pride and honor that first drew them to the Marine Corps. MARINES: TO NEXT PAGE
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Above, graduation for Marines is a honored tradition, which was no exception for the Jan. 13 ceremoney at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif. Below, after not seeing their family and friends for three months, the change sometimes can be unrecognizable for some. (Photos by Chris Dillmann – Sun Newspapers)

Above, recruits march onto a parade ground at Camp Pendleton after completeing the Crucible, which consists of 54 hours of sleep and food deprivation, miles of hiking day and night. The end is met with the “Reeper,” a near-vertical climb. At top right, for some of the recruits that were presented with their emblem, tears streamed down their face with joy. Center right, during the graduation ceremony, the Marines from each company that were top of their classes were presented with a special honor. Below right, after completing the Crucible, the recruits became Marines when presented with their Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem. (Photos by Chris Dillmann – Sun Newspapers)
Marines FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Today they receive their eagle, globe and anchor emblem. And the title of United States Marine. Over the last 50 hours, with less than three full meals and running on fewer hours of sleep than the average afternoon nap, these recruits have hiked up mountains strapped to packs weighing 80 pounds or more. They’ve worked, sweated, and carried each other along together as a team through nearly 40 kilometers of hikes and up mountains. The capstone on months of training and exercises, the Crucible is known as the make or break moment, an event that leads into the end of their initial training phase. And, the reward that comes with it. That reward is enormous to a
recruit, who, for most of the last three months, has heard few kind words and even fewer that were not yelled. The drill instructors, who have guided the recruits to this point of success, place the emblem in their hand individually and give them a few quiet words of encouragement and congratulations before addressing the former recruit as Marine. Not a few eyes are damp as Navy Corpsmen, the medical personnel who work with the corps, walk up and down behind the recruits reminding the exhausted young men not to lock their knees and standing by for those moments when they might be needed. Those who walked onto the blacktop as recruits, exit to a hearty breakfast and a solid rest as Marines. A few days later, they’ll once again march across a parade ground, but this time it will be as Marines for their final review
before the commanding officers of the recruit depot as well as their families, friends and relatives, many of whom make the trip to San Diego to watch the final graduation. Those Marines of particular note will be recognized for their work during training There is work yet to be done; after a 10-day leave, they will return to the business of learning what it means to be a Marine through combat training and further education on their designation military occupation specialty. In the story of their transformation, the last chapter comes to a close, while their lives as United States Marines will not conclude. Driver FROM PAGE 11 The goal of her father, also 85, was to return home to Dorothy and live another year or two, despite his failing kidneys, she said. His rehabilitation was seen as a blessing by the family, according to Hanson, because Dorothy was able to walk over to see him on a daily basis. Although Dorothy did not drive, she was very active and did not fit the elderly stereotype, Hanson said. Her mother had played volleyball into her 80s and continued to bicycle and canoe. “There was no way you would have guessed she was 85,” she said. The family wasn’t concerned for their mother’s welfare as she made daily treks to visit their father, although they were concerned about her walking home after dark, Hanson noted. Hanson was in Washington when she received a message to call home on Oct. 21, 2010. She assumed something had

happened to her father. Instead she found herself flying to Minnesota the next morning, and was the one who broke the news to her father that Dorothy had died. Hanson brought a priest and social worker with her, not knowing how her father would react upon hearing the news. She said he was extremely brave, telling her that Dorothy’s work on Earth was done and it was her time. “We never really could tell what was going on inside in terms of his loss and his grief.” The signs, however, became apparent on the outside, as her father’s health deteriorated. “It came much faster than any of us thought.” He had talked of wanting to return home, even though Dorothy was no longer there, but his health began to fail. “It was hurting him but he never revealed it,” Hanson said. As his body shut down nine days after Dorothy’s death, Robert made one last comment. “I want to join Dorothy,” Hanson recalled.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.
Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.
olive oil
lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
