BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS A 39-year-old Bloomington man has been arrested in connection with an incident that injured a Savage man when a vise shattered the windshield of his vehicle and struck him in the face while driving on Normandale Boulevard. Following his release on bail, the suspect was arrested in St. Croix Falls, Wis., on suspicion of driving while impaired. Gerret Parks of Bloomington was arrested last week in connection with a Feb. 27 incident that injured Jon Stacke of Savage. “We are convinced he is our suspect,” Bloomington Deputy Chief Rick Hart said. Parks was arrested about noon

Matt Hovila distinctly remembers his last basketball game at Bloomington Jefferson High School. Unlike most seniors, his last game didn’t end with a playoff loss or an improbable state tournament victory, it ended with a conference victory against Rosemount. And it was the first conference game of the season. There was little indication in the final minutes of the game that Hovila’s playing days were over. He had aspirations of playing collegiate basketball, but those went by the wayside following the victory.

A 48-year-old Chicago man who thought he could outrun police was arrested after he crashed a stolen vehicle following a pursuit through Bloomington. The suspect, arrested Feb. 27, had been observed speeding at approximately 8 a.m. when an officer attempted to stop his vehicle near the intersection of 78th Street and Nicollet Avenue, according to Bloomington Deputy Chief Rick Hart. Instead of pulling over, the driver headed westbound on Interstate 494 from Nicollet Avenue. The driver struck three vehicles as he maneuvered toward the southbound exit for interstate 35W, Hart said. On 35W the man exited at 90th Street, crossed the street and continued south on the freeway. He repeated the stunt at 98th and 106th streets, momentarily losing control of his vehicle on the 98th Street exit ramp, but officers

were unable to detain the man on the exit ramp before he drove off, Hart noted. When the suspect exited on Cliff Road in Burnsville, he crashed the vehicle and was unable to drive off. He fled the vehicle toward a nearby pond, but was quickly apprehended, Hart said. The suspect was arrested for fleeing police in a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and hit-and-run of an occupied vehicle. A 40-year-old female passenger was also arrested at the scene for an outstanding felony warrant from Illinois and giving false information to police, Hart noted.

Police FROM PREVIOUS PAGE section of 93rd Street and Garfield Avenue approximately 2 p.m. Feb. 29. He was arrested after it was determined that he was driving after revocation, Hart said. A 26-year-old Richfield man, a passenger in the vehicle, was arrested for a department of corrections warrant, Hart noted. In a search of the impounded vehicle police found suspected narcotics and were able to connect the suspects to a residence on the 100 block of West 97th Street. As officers initiated surveillance of the residence in preparation to execute a search warrant, a 31-year-old woman drove away from the residence shortly after 4 p.m., Hart said. A traffic stop of her vehicle near 94th Street and Lyndale Avenue resulted in her arrest for driving after suspension and without insurance, Hart explained. A subsequent search of the residence turned up suspected narcotics, he noted.

Robbery arrest
Officer assault
A 17-year-old Minneapolis boy who scuffled with a store employee was arrested in connection with an attempted theft from Sears at Mall of America. The boy was arrested Feb. 24, accused of attempting to steal $416 worth of clothing. The boy and a male accomplice were observed filling a shopping cart with clothing by a Sears loss prevention officer, according to Hart. The duo pushed the card toward the third-floor skyway exit and attempted to carry the merchandise to the mall parking ramp. The officer confronted the duo in an attempt to detain them. The duo threatened to assault the officer, with the Minneapolis boy striking him in the face, Hart explained. A second loss prevention officer arrived to help detain the boy until police arrived to arrest him. The accomplice, who had dropped the clothing, was not apprehended, Hart noted. Because the boy struck the officer he faces a possible robbery charge, Hart said.
A 24-year-old Bloomington woman was arrested Feb. 28 after an altercation with a police officer. Police were dispatched to the 4700 block of West 98th Street about 8 p.m. on a report of a female in the street yelling for help. An officer arriving at the scene found the 24-year-old suspect walking near the intersection of 98th Street and Rich Road, Hart said. When the officer attempted to make contact with the woman, she ran toward the officer’s car door, pushing the door closed and slamming his fingers in the door, according to Hart. Upon being confronted by the officer the woman attempted to punch and kick the officer before beginning to flee the area. Additional officers arrived, resulting in the woman’s arrest, Hart added. The woman told police she had been yelling at her family, who had attempted to take her home after not allowing her to see her boyfriend. The family’s vehicle left the scene before police arrived, Hart noted.

Requiring CPR instruction can save lives Why are Jamie LaLonde, Natasha Fleischman and Dale Wakasugi supporting a bill that would require Minnesota’s public schools to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation? For the best possible reasons: It saved their lives. Both the Minnesota House and Senate are considering bills that would require all Minnesota Public Schools to teach CPR to students grades 7-12. Chief authors Sen. Dan Hall and Rep. Mary Holberg have bi-partisan support. In recent testimony, a Minnesota School Boards Association representative expressed reasonable concerns about adding a new mandate when budgets are challenged. However, what’s a higher priority, than teaching young people how to save lives? Testimony suggested that about half of Minnesota’s school districts do, and half don’t teach CPR. So I hope the bill passes. Twenty-year-old Jamie LaLonde of Bloomington testified that she was working at the Mall of America when “I had a sudden cardiac arrest … I was 18 years old. I’m helping the American Heart Association with this bill because the only
JOE NATHAN Guest Columnist
reason I’m alive today is because someone that was trained in CPR made it to the scene within five minutes.” “Although I’m very lucky I still can’t help but think that none of the 16-20 year olds around me that were working with me knew to start CPR. Sudden Cardiac Arrest can happen to anyone, even young people, and I think it’s important we prepare people as best we can so that if they ever do get the chance to save a life they can,” she said. LaLonde is attending school at Inver Hills Community College to become a paramedic. Stillwater School Board member Natasha Fleischman also recently testified about the bill. She wrote, “CPR saved my life. I was a 33-year-old mother of two in 2002 when my heart stopped for the first time (with no known heart condition). I was working at the St. Paul Public Schools. I was on first floor and the director
of safety and security, Will Waterkamp ran down from the 4th floor to perform CPR on me. After the St. Paul Fire Department defibrillated me five times, I was taken to Regions Hospital, diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and received an implantable defibrillator (ICD).” She continued, “I have worked with the AHA and the Go Red campaign, as well as WomenHeart: the National Coalition of Women with Heart Disease and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association to build knowledge and skills that save lives…. When someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest, which is often the case when a high school athlete collapses on the field, every minute counts. This legislation is meant to have every high school student learn CPR before graduating and have the ability to save the lives of family members or friends.” “In Stillwater, we already teach CPR in our required health classes. When I conducted a study for the AHA using the CPR anytime kit, we wanted to compare two schools, one that taught traditional CPR and one that only had a 30-minute course with the anytime kit. We
taught kids to do CPR in 30 minutes. And the preliminary data showed that their compressions were more consistently effective than those of students in a 4hour traditional CPR class. Pretty impressive what can be accomplished!” Fleischman said. Finally, Dale Wakasugi said, “Since my first arrest in December 2007, I have made a commitment to myself to help others by ‘paying it forward’. To help place as many AEDs in as many public places as possible and to help raise awareness of the importance of knowing CPR and how to use an AED… I want to help high school students learn CPR and how to use an AED, since my key rescuer was a high school student who just learned CPR and how to use an AED in health class three weeks prior to my event.” Joe Nathan, former public school teacher, administrator, PTA president and parent of three public school graduates, is director of the Center for School Change at Macalester College. He can be reached at jnathan@ macalester.edu. Columns reflect the opinion of the author.
It’s time for us to embrace social media When it comes to social media there are two different Jared Huizengas. First, there’s Jared the individual who has embraced social media as his second-favorite form of communication (behind only text messaging). If he can’t send you a text message or write on your wall, he probably doesn’t want to talk to you badly enough to call. Second, there’s Jared the newspaper guy, who eschews new forms of communication – particularly those that limit his longwinded nature. If he is lim-
JARED HUIZENGA Wayzata/Long Lake/Orono Community Editor ited in any way, be it a character limit or space, he’s just going to call you so he can continue to ramble. In recent months, there’s been great discussion around the newsroom as to how we can embrace social media as a new tool and utilize it so it helps us as well as our readers.
Some editors have started Facebook pages for their editions, while others have migrated to Twitter. I fall into the latter group. Although, truth be told, it isn’t all that new. Back in 2009, we experimented with producing daily newscasts. These newscasts lasted anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes and included news from our coverage areas and neighboring cities. Some editors naturally took to being on screen. Others – myself included – showed that no matter what our moms said,
we have faces made for radio and voices made for print. During the dark days of newscasts, I started a Twitter account and used it to Tweet links to our daily newscasts. It didn’t help drive up my “ratings” much. Once the newscast experiment was discontinued, I put it away in the back of my mind. Along with that memory went the Twitter account. That is until recently when I decided to start using it again HUIZENGA: TO NEXT PAGE

Friends, co-workers remember Andy Hamre Hamre was ECM-Sun Printing employee Andrew Hamre is being remembered this week as a man who loved fishing, his family and his friends. Hamre, 49, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, while at work at the ECM-Sun Printing facility in Hudson, Wis., from a massive heart attack. He leaves behind a wife, two sons, many friends and his co-workers – all who will miss him very much. During an afternoon break, Andy suffered a heart attack. Coworkers attempted CPR and called emergency crews, but he died a short time later. “As always, our teams pulled together but this time in an attempt to save Andy’s life,” plant employee Maria Beaupre said. “Despite all our efforts, Andy passed away.” His friends and family quickly mention “fishing” when asked what he liked doing the most in his free time. Andy was an avid fishermen, and had won several trophies for his catches. Annette said that Andy loved the New Richmond area for its great fishing, with Mary Park Lake being a favorite spot. “They’d catch bass, crappies, perch and sunnies there all the time,” Annette said. His main fishing buddy was son, Josh, age 14. “They’d compete against each other in their own bass tournaments,” Annette said. Last year, Josh won the contests. “He kicked his dad’s butt.” His co-workers at Sun Printing also knew how much he loved to fish. He and his son fished as often as they could, one

He also loved sports, and supported his son who played in a local baseball league every season. “Andy was a dedicated, hard-working and reliable employee who would stay to the end when things went wrong. When things got tough, Andy got tougher. He will be missed by many, as will his singing throughout the plant each afternoon once the deadlines had been met,” Cody Griffin, print plant manager, said. Annette said Andy enjoyed his work and his co-workers at Sun Printing, where he’d been employed for five years. The work team was like family, she said. There would be occasional disagreements, “but at the end of the day, it was all good,” she said. Andy grew up in northwest Minneapolis, and attended Edison High School. He worked in shipping and receiving, and he and Annette also operated a home daycare business there. They moved to Wisconsin after deciding it was time to get out of the city, and took the family to New Richmond. Their eldest son, Jonathan, 21, is a college student in Beloit, Wis. Annette Hamre said she was grateful for the friendship and support she has received from Andy’s co-workers and friends. “I just want to thank everyone for their help and for their prayers,” she said. asked. Recently I noticed other media outlets following some of the Sun Newspaper accounts. These accounts don’t actually tweet anything or interact with anyone, they just seem to be there trolling for information and using the stories and information tweeted by others as the basis for their own stories. If you thought all we did was news, you’re mistaken LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Our website, Minnlocal.com, has a variety of blogs to bring you another take on life If you were to be so curious as to click on the Opinion tab on our website, minnlocal.com, you might be surprised at what you find there: blogs. Yes, that’s right, we blog. (Is that a verb? Should it be? The questions an editor sometimes asks of himself may be of no consequence to folks outside the newsroom, but that one’s been perplexing me for a while. Let me know your thoughts.) Excuse me while I recover myself and get back to the point. Ah, yes, blogging. The long and sometimes short of it is there is often a lack of space in our print edition for the kinds of writing we’d like to share with you. Luckily, the Internet is a rather big place and can handle the weight of multiple writers writing on numerous subjects. At the moment, I’d like to high-
DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Managing Editor light blogs that may be of interest to you, our cherished readers:
Sun Staff Speaks This is where we often stash our columns after (or before) they’ve been printed. You’ll find posts discussing topics from being single on Valentine’s Day to the quandaries an avid sports fan finds himself in when there are no professional sports of interest being played. It’s a bit of a catchall for our staff to say a few words you might want to hear.
The Wahl Street Journal Our senior managing editor, Paul Wahl, has a unique way of looking at the world. No, that’s not a euphemism. After nearly 30 years in the news game, he’s got a handle on how things work in the business and in life in general. A true reporter’s perspective on current events, past events and the day-to-day.
Peggy’s Journal Working in journalism presents an interesting problem: Remembering everything that has happened over the years can be daunting. Executive Editor Peggy Bakken has acquired the memorial trait in spades. Touching on everything from Minnesota history to rock concerts, Peggy provides context and insights along the way.
Scene and Heard Community Editor Jared Huizenga is a media addict. Thinking about seeing a new movie? He can tell you the production value and give an honest review. Want to check out an album? He probably knows the personal lives of the musicians better than they do themselves. There you have it; Sun Newspapers doesn’t just give you the community news you’ve always relied on us for. We’re a whole lot more. Look for new blogs and posts appearing at MinnLocal.com/staff_blogs.

Bootcamp, becoming a Marine is not dehumanizing, but something to be proud of To the editor: From a wife and mother of a marine: Thank you for running the articles on the Marine Corps. It showed what it takes to become one of the few, the proud. It has the longest basic training of all the armed forces (13 weeks vs. 6). My son left the Twin Cities as a boy — 13 weeks later he was a man. He had been yelled at but it did not dehumanize him — it strengthened him. He learned from his [drill instructors] to be respectful, responsible, disciplined, to be a team player, self-reliant, to be physically fit, that all people are created equal. These values of love of God, Country and the Corps are with a Marine forever. Let us not forget Marines not only are soldiers but they protect our embassies, have helped in evacuations of civilians and diplomats, offer humanitarian assistance to people not only of America but of the world. If you are not sure what it is or what it takes to be a Marine — ask one. Once a Marine — always a Marine — a title that is earned, not given, and a title that is theirs forever. Extend PSEO to 9th, 10th graders Students, parents should urge legislative support Minnesota high school juniors and seniors who meet established standards are fortunate to be able to take college classes and to have the tuition and books paid for by the state. A question before the Minnesota Legislature is whether to allow qualified ninth and tenth graders to take college classes as well. The program is called Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) and thousands of Minnesota students are using it. By taking dual-enrollment courses they are receiving high school and college credits. The Minnesota Legislature established the PSEO program in 1985 to give students an opportunity to enhance the education they receive at their high schools, alternative area learning centers, charter schools or home schools. The program gives students capable of doing college-level work the opportunity to earn postsecondary credits while completing high school graduation requirements. Because some ninth and tenth graders have demonstrated through testing they have the maturity and ability to do college-level work, the legislature should pass the bill, this session. Critics say freshmen and sophomores are not ready, and taking college classes so soon interferes with their regular course of study and diminishes their high school experience. Freshmen and sophomores, however, already are taking Advanced Placement courses, just as are juniors and seniors. Results of standardized reading and mathematics testing show which students are ready to take a college class, no matter what their year in school. Proponents of early college study say freshmen and sophomores could start by taking just one college class. Eligibility and acceptance would be determined not by the host high school administra-

tors but by the college and university. Parents should welcome the PSEO program, because they do not have to pay for the college tuition and books, since their students are enrolled in the K-12 program. Students learn early about the rigors of college instruction and that enables them to plan specifically their college career path. In addition, they realize early the importance of studying basic high school subjects so they will not have to take costly remedial collegeentrance classes. Several national studies found that students who participate in dual (school/college) credit programs are more likely to graduate from high school, to enroll in college, to start a four-year college and to stay in college for two years. A study by the Minnesota Center for School Change shows there is a major increase in Minnesota high school students taking college courses. Its authors recommend that since ninth and 10 graders may take Advanced Placement and Concurrent Enrollment courses, these students should be allowed to take PSEO courses on a limited basis. Support for allowing qualified high school freshmen and sophomores take college-level classes is growing, and has bipartisan support in the Legislature. Parents and particularly students should contact their legislators and urge that the bill be passed. Don Heinzman is an editorial writer for ECM Publishers. Sun Newspapers welcomes responses to this and any other editorial page commentary. Send to: suneditor@acnpapers.com.

Cancer benefit features motorcycle giveaway
Following the release of new boundaries for state house districts, a former state representative has announced he will challenge the man who unseated him two years ago. Former House District 41B Rep. The new House District 49B will retain most of the precincts within 41B while adding precincts in northeast Eden Prairie and portions of precincts in southeastern Minnetonka. “District 49B needs a representative who will listen to the voters, work hard and help create jobs, strengthen our schools and ensure Minnesota is a state where business and families can flourish,” Rosenthal said. Rosenthal served one term in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Info: voterosenthal.com.

Students among U.S. Scholars candidates Bloomington Jefferson High School seniors Ellen Norby and Bryan Duerfeldt have been selected as candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Each year the U.S. Department of Education selects candidates for the academic component of the Presidential Scholars Program based on having scored exceptionally well on the SAT or ACT. “This is a great achievement for these students to even be selected for the program,” says Jefferson High School Principal Steve Hill. “It is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.” The Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor America’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors in academic success, leadership and service to the school and community. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.

Richfield’s ‘Biggest Loser’ contestant a mover and shaker O’Neal Hampton starts foundation and ‘fitness resort’ in Hawaii
At left, O’Neal Hampton began his stint on “Biggest Loser” weighing 389 pounds, having already cut 31 pounds in preparation. At right, Hampton slimmed to 237 pounds by the time he exited “Biggest Loser” nearly three years ago. He has stabilized at 243, keeping in shape by boxing and lifting weights. (Submitted photos)
BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Since losing nearly 200 pounds three years ago for reality show “The Biggest Loser,” Richfield resident O’Neal Hampton has taken advantage of his newfound mobility. Getting through the work day and getting home was all he could manage as a 420-pounder, but now he the 54year-old is making the rounds, speaking to Fortune 500 companies and auditoriums filled with doctors, founding fitness retreats, and starting his own foundation. With a stated aim to pay forward the blessing of his renewed life, O’Neal, who has stabilized his weight at 243 with boxing workouts and weight lifting, is showing no signs of slowing, even as he rehabilitates from two knee surgeries in two years. Although the organization has been active for sometime, the former station
manager at an Edina post office will officially launch the Bloomingtonbased O’Neal Hampton Wellness Foundation March 17-18 at the Body Mind Life Expo, taking place at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The foundation’s mission is to pro-

mote physical activity by paying athletics fees for underprivileged children and their families, while bringing in nutritionists to help those families achieve a healthy diet, Hampton said. While that aim continues, Hampton’s newest endeavor is the sec-
ond iteration of what seems an oxymoron: a fitness resort, where people will use their vacation time to endure 68 hours of exercise a day while adhering to strict diets. And they will cross the Pacific to do so, as headbands replace leis in Oahu, Hawaii, at Hamilton’s U 1st Fitness, which he is establishing with the help of a former “Biggest Loser” production assistant and his daughter, SunShine, who competed on “Biggest Loser” along with her father. U 1st Fitness is housed at Turtle Bay Resort on the island’s north shore. The other U 1st Fitness location has been up and running for a year in Houston. The new location, aside from the more vacation-like locale, will mirror the Houston program, catering to people of diverse fitness levels, from 400pounders to those who simply want to firm up. Preliminary market research showed strong demand for the service, garnering “just a huge response,” Hampton said. But he admits, it is not cheap. Although prices are yet to be HAMPTON: TO PAGE 23

Hampton FROM PAGE 20 finalized, a trip to the fitness resort would cost about as much as any Hawaiian vacation. This is the reason for the Wellness Foundation, Hampton said, and the reason he collects corporate donations on the speaking circuit, from which he makes nothing himself. A healthy lifestyle can cost money, and “everybody deserves the right to be healthy,” Hampton said by phone from Hawaii last week, where he was setting up his fitness resort. Hampton has spread his message
www.minnlocal.com – Thursday, March 8, 2012 – Bloomington Sun-Current
across the country, but the focus of the Wellness Foundation begins at home. “I want to start in my own back yard,” Hampton said. “I want to help Minnesota first.”
Life before — and after — “Loser” Hampton says his motivational speaking actually has very little to do with weight-loss, per se. Instead, he speaks on the issues everyone faces like finances, stress, health and marriage. “Four-hundred-and-twenty pounds is a product of something else going on in your life,” said Hampton, recounting his “Biggest Loser” experience and his realization, as he shed the pounds, that
he wasn’t the person he projected to the world. He calls his former self a “clown.” “I was smiling. I was happy and jubilant. That was a façade,” he said. “At 420 pounds I was no where near as happy as where I am now. I didn’t think I had a problem at 420 pounds. You always find a way to get around things, and that’s what I was doing.” But getting around was the problem. “It was all I could do to get up and go to work and come back home,” Hampton said. Now, his wife, Sarah, is doing all she can to keep pace. “It’s like a fulltime job for me to kind of keep up with O’Neal,” she said by phone while in Hawaii with her husband, as they celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary in addition
to taking care of the fitness resort business. The anniversaries are sweeter now. It used to be, when they went to the movies, Sarah would drop her husband off at the theatre’s entrance before going off to park. In those days O’Neal, an avid Twins fan, would stay away from the ballpark altogether. “He couldn’t fit in the seat,” his wife said. Now they have season tickets, and the first game O’Neal attended after losing the weight, SunShine threw out the first pitch. “It’s just things like that that have really changed our lives, that’s amazing,” Sarah raved. “It’s a wonderful life.” For the Hamptons, that’s life since “Loser,” and O’Neal keeps moving. “My dance card is filled,” he said.

Support FROM PAGE 1 Hovila suffered a concussion during that Rosemount victory last season. Instead of spending this winter on a basketball court at an outstate school, Hovila is studying applied economics at the University of Minnesota. And he’s reaching out to those who are traveling the same path he has since fourth grade, students affected by concussions. Hovila is the co-founder of Connections4Concussions, a support group for students who are coping with the effects of a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. At 19, Hovila is an elder statesman for the newly formed support group, which held its first meeting last week at Penn Lake Library in Bloomington. “It’s good to be with people who know the same struggles, and don’t judge you for it,” he said. Hovila wants students from across the Twin Cities and beyond to know that they’re not the only one suffering from the lingering effects of a concussion, a feeling he knows well in the years since his first concussion, suffered while playing football as a fourth-grader. What Hovila and his family didn’t know all those years ago was that his first concussion would be just one of many. He suffered two concussions within a one-month period during that fourth-grade football season. The first wasn’t significant, according to Hovila, but the second one turned out to be life changing, even though it wasn’t as hard of a hit. “The effects of it were more serious because of the first hit,” he said. The second concussion had lasting effects. He had bouts with fatigue and memory loss, struggled in school, became short-tempered and was prone to outbursts, all uncharacteristic for him prior to fourth grade, he explained. Hovila’s life returned to normal in fifth grade, but concussions became a part of his life as a basketball player, starting with a concussion in sixth

grade. Headaches following that concussion occasionally forced Hovila to go home early from school. After each concussion Hovila would be diagnosed by a doctor and cleared to resume activity before returning to basketball. “We did everything we were supposed to at the time,” he said. But by his sophomore year in high school the family decided that the recurring cycle should end. Hovila and his parent agreed that the next concussion would be his last as a basketball player. Hovila was 90 seconds from extending his basketball career beyond the opening game of the conference schedule. An elbow to the head during a scrum for a rebound off of a missed free throw was the final blow, although Hovila didn’t know it at the time. He remembers the sharp pain he felt shoot up the right side of his skull, calling it “one of the worst pains I had felt.” But it didn’t cause an immediate headache or dizziness. “I finished the game.” It wasn’t until more than 90 minutes after the game that Hovila started to experience concussion symptoms. “I couldn’t even get off the couch by myself,” he said.
port group. The idea was suggested in jest, but the duo realized they could fulfill a need by organizing the group, and proceeded to do so. Connections4Concussions is intended to provide youth and young adults who have suffered concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries with opportunities to learn from each other, and find encouragement and support. Their group will also provide caregivers, family members and friends opportunities to discuss their chal-
lenges in a separate setting. The inaugural meeting attracted 10 students, with the Hovila and Meyer families discussing their experiences and the need for the support group. The group will meet at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month at Penn Lake Library, 8800 Penn Ave. S. The March 27 meeting will include two speakers from the Brain Injury Association. Information about the group is available online at go.to/c4c.
Beyond basketball “I’m still dealing with a lot of the symptoms,” Hovila said. Years of experience have helped Hovila learn how to manage and cope with the effects of his concussions, but he grew up without a peer group to share his experiences with. Classmates suffered concussions, too, but none of them experienced the recurring effects of them as Hovila did. Hovila has had an outlet for support, however, in the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota. Through their programs to help families affected by brain injuries Hovila met Kayla Meyer of New Prague, who had suffered a concussion in December 2009. While attending a Minnesota Wild game last October as guests of the Brain Injury Association, Hovila and Meyer discussed starting a peer sup-

Vise FROM PAGE 1 Friday, March 2, two days after Bloomington Police asked for the public’s help in solving a string of similar incidents along Normandale Boulevard. He was released from the Hennepin County Jail over the weekend after posting bond, and had not been charged in Hennepin County District Court as of Monday, March 5, according to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. He was arrested Sunday, March 4, by the St. Croix Falls Police Department after a report of a black SUV driving recklessly at approximately 5:20 p.m. The caller identified Parks as the suspect, according to St. Croix Falls Police. As an officer was responding to the call, police received a second call of a black SUV speeding near the intersection of two highways, nearly hitting the reporting party. An officer identified the suspect vehicle, traveling at speeds estimated in excess of 70 mph, and attempted to stop the driver. Following a 1.5-mile pursuit the SUV pulled over. Parks did not comply with an order to exit his vehicle and had to be forcibly removed, resulting in a cut above his left eye, according to St. Croix Falls Police. Parks was arrested for reckless driving, fleeing an officer, resisting arrest and

Test results of a blood sample taken following the arrest were not available as of Monday, St. Croix Falls Police noted. Last week’s Bloomington incident that injured Stacke was the sixth incident reported in recent weeks, and the first that resulted in an injury. Police have evi-
dence that Parks was in the vicinity during some of the incidents, according to Hart. “We can’t elaborate as to what that evidence is at this point,” he said. “We’re still doing a lot of investigative follow up.” Parks was arrested at his Bloomington residence, where a search warrant was
executed. The search turned up evidence that would point to Parks as the person responsible for the incidents, Hart said. “Whether or not we can charge him on all of them is yet to be determined,” he added. Hart characterized Parks as “no stranger to law enforcement in the Twin Cities area,” noting Bloomington has arrested him previously for incidents such as vandalism and criminal damage to property. Stacke, a National Guard sergeant, and Staff Sgt. Jeremy Gettel of Bloomington were driving southbound on Normandale Boulevard at approximately 7:15 p.m. when a metal vise struck the windshield of their vehicle, hitting Stacke in the face and knocking him unconscious, according to Gettel. Gettel heard a loud explosion from the impact, saw Stacke was unconscious and grabbed the wheel of the vehicle. Gettel was able to put the car in neutral and engage the parking brake, brining the car to a halt, he said. Following surgery and hospitalization, Stacke returned home last week. “He’s doing a lot better than I’d be doing,” Gettel said. The Bloomington Crime Prevention Association had offered a $1,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction following the Feb. 27 incident. Police are continuing to seek information in the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to Bloomington Police at 952-563-4900.

City prep squads lose to EP in section basketball playoffs Eagles fall 65-51 in semis, Jaguars are defeated 62-41 in quarterfinals BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Costly turnovers turned out to be Kennedy’s downfall in the Class 4A, Section 2 girls basketball playoffs. The third-seeded Eagles lost 65-51 to second-seeded Eden Prairie in the section semifinals March 3 at Hopkins Lindbergh Center. Kennedy ended its season with a 23-5
record. The Eagles shared the South Suburban Conference title with Eastview. Both squads compiled 16-2 league records. “We didn’t match Eden Prairie’s intensity level in the semifinals,” said Kennedy head coach Percy Wade. “We had too many turnovers. “Kenisha Bell was one player who showed up to play and did well.” Bell led the Kennedy offense with 17 points. Micaela Meredith scored 11 points. Jade Martin and Heather Bachman netted nine points each. Kennedy had difficulty containing BASKETBALL: TO PAGE 32

Kennedy’s Cousins finishes senior season with 37-7 record Eagle wrestler wins one of three state matches Kennedy senior Ben Cousins represented Bloomington in the state Class 3A Wrestling Tournament March 2-3 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Cousins qualified for state by earning true second at 152 pounds in the Class 3A, Section 2 tournament Feb. 25 at Shakopee High School. Cousins defeated Tim Moore of Rochester John Marshall 1-0 in his opening state tournament match. But the Eagle wrestler lost 31 to Adam Jackson of Rosemount in the quarterfinals. In wrestlebacks, Cousins was defeated 7-1 by Cody Skog of Cambridge-Isanti. Cousins finished his senior season 37-7. Kennedy had several other high finishers in Section 2 individual competition the previous week. Eagle senior Jordan Dodd was second in his weight class. Junior Charlie Keith placed third. Sophomore Orhan Azizi, senior Hugo Felix and sophomore Zack Bakko were fourth-place finishers. Sophomore John Maiers and junior Carlos Vasquez finished fifth. Jefferson junior Braedon Rumler was also fifth. Sophomore Jay Robinson and ninth-grader Logan Judge finished sixth. – Compiled by Greg Kleven

Kennedy ’87 state champions reunite at this year’s hockey tourney Minnesota’s most popular high school sports tournament gets underway this week at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Over 115,000 fans are expected to pack Xcel for four days of state Class AA and A boys hockey tournament competition. Last winter, 116,662 spectators were on hand to witness March Madness on the ice. The State AA tourney bracket features one of the best-balanced and talented fields in recent years. Top seeds are Duluth East (1), Maple Grove (2), Eagan (3) and Edina (4). State AA unseeded squads are Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Lakeville South, Moorhead and Hill-Murray. High-scoring BSM is my long shot selection to win the state AA championship. BSM should have a collective chip on its shoulder after not receiving a tournament seed. Plus, the Red Knights have extra motivation while trying to win a state title for injured teammate Jack Jablonski. In Class A, Hermantown and St.

Thomas Academy are top seeds followed by Breck and Thief River Falls. Other state A tourney entrants are Little Falls, Duluth Marshall, Rochester Lourdes and New Ulm. Again, I am picking a private school to win a state championship in this class. Breck’s past tournament experience should pay dividends this season. It should be an interesting four days of high school hockey.
Kennedy reunion Bloomington Kennedy High School’s 1987 state boys hockey championship team will hold a 25-year reunion during this year’s tournament. The ’87 Eagles compiled a 25-1 record while winning the school’s only state boys hockey title.
All 20 players from that team are returning including a foreign exchange student from Finland, Marko Kreus, and a decorated Air Force Pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Kent Landreth. The Eagle team is getting together with family and friends Friday, March 9, at Poor Richards Common House in Bloomington. This event starts at 7 p.m. and is open to anybody who wishes to attend. Then on Saturday, March 10, Kennedy’s 1987 state champions will attend championship-round games at Xcel Energy Center. A suite and tickets are being provided by TCF Bank. “I originally approached TCF about possibly renting a suite, but when I told them what it was for, they really stepped up and offered to host the event for us,” said former ’87 Kennedy captain Joe Decker. “They’ve been great to work with, and it’s really been more than I could have hoped for.”
Gilbert is back home Former Bloomington Jefferson allstate defenseman Tom Gilbert is mak-
ing hockey news on the local front after getting traded from Edmonton to the Wild Feb. 27. Gilbert, 29, came to the Minnesota NHL team from the Oilers in a trade for Wild defenseman Nick Schultz. The Wild is hoping that Gilbert can generate offense from his defensive position and provided leadership and durability for the defensive corps. Gilbert scored 33 goals and collected 158 points in 384 games for Edmonton since 2004. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman displayed durability during his NHL career missing only three games in four seasons. Gilbert graduated from Jefferson in 2001 before enrolling at the University of Wisconsin on a hockey scholarship. He scored the winning goal for the Badgers in the 2006 NCAA title game. I have been fortunate to chronicle Gilbert’s hockey success over the years. Gilbert has been a leader on and off the ice for the Jaguars, Badgers and Oilers. He should provide leadership and reliable defensive play for the Wild as well.

A new season has arrived for Bloomington’s high school boys basketball teams. Jefferson and Kennedy are looking to play the role of spoilers in the Class 4A, Section 2 playoffs. Kennedy is the fifth seed and played fourth-seeded Lakeville South in the quarterfinals March 7. Winner meets topseeded Eden Prairie or eighth-seeded Burnsville in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Chaska High School. Jefferson, a seventh seed, met secondseeded Chanhassen in the quarterfinals March 7. Winner plays No. 3 Prior Lake or No. 6 Shakopee in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Saturday at Chaska. Championship game is 7 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Chaska. Kennedy has a 10-16 overall record while Jefferson finished the regular season 5-20. Jefferson coach Jeff Evens looks for a wide-open battle for section supremacy. “There is no heavy favorite in our section,” said Evens. “There are several teams capable of winning the title.”
Jefferson senior Ryan Gilmer has returned to the Jaguar lineup after missing five games because of an ankle injury. “It is nice to have Ryan back in the lineup, but he is still not 100 percent,” said Evens. “We have struggled to score points this season, but the guys are working hard and maintaining positive attitudes.” Jefferson ended its regular season with a 61-37 loss to Eastview March 2. Leading Jaguar scorers were T.J. LaDuke (12 points), Kyle Lynch (nine) and Gilmer (seven). Jefferson lost 72-35 to Apple Valley Feb. 28. Gilmer led the offense with 11 points. LaDuke and Matt Rosen scored six points each.
Kennedy works overtime Kennedy heads into the playoffs after a hard-earned 76-74 overtime victory over Eagan March 2. Sophomore guard C.J. Lewis topped the Kennedy scoring chart with 22 points. Rico Gunn connected for 18 points and Darian Pittman scored 11. Jacob Kohner added 10 points. Eastview defeated Kennedy 74-49 Feb. 28. Kohner had 12 points and Jumah’ri Turner finished with 11. Other leading Eagle scorers were Lewis (eight points), Travon Hearns (six) and Gunn (six).
