A future pool shark? At 11, Bloomington girl already competeing on national stage BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Soccer, basketball, bowling and chess, they’re all pastimes one would expect to find children engaged in. April Larson, 11, of Bloomington often finds herself competing alongside her father, Dave, and many other men old enough to be her father. Her arena of competition is lined with green felt. April is a pool player, competing alongside other Twin Cities children in a weekly pool league in Burnsville, as well as alongside her father against competitors whose experience predates her birth. Yet she holds her own, and has demonstrated a natural talent for the game, having competed earlier this month in her first national 9-ball tournament. With little experience playing 9-ball April finished second, challenging the eventual champion in the deciding match. She owes her unlikely success, in part, to her father, whose weekly league play inspired April’s interest in the game. The secret to her success? “You have to be confident, but not too confident,” she said. The unlikely trip to the 2011 Billiard Education Foundation Junior National 9-Ball Championships began when April was 8 years old. Her father invited her to come watch him play in his weekly pool league. She enjoyed watching, as well as getting together with other relatives at the weekly league gathering, and picked up a cue to try her hand at the game. She quickly took to it and joined a junior league at Shooter’s in Burnsville when she was eligible to do so at age 9. Since that time the future sixth-grader at Olson Middle School has competed in tournaments around the state, earning several first-place trophies for her 8-ball prowess. It was her strong play in juniors tournaments that led

When the nation pauses to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks upon America, a Bloomington group wants to make sure that time is set aside to celebrate the positive aspects of that day. “There are going to be a lot memorials going on around the country,” according to Bloomington Crime Prevention Association President Jim Caauwe. “We want to celebrate the lives of the heroes, many of whom gave their lives on 9/11,” he said. Bloomington residents need look no further than one of their native sons in celebrating the heroism of Sept. 11. The inaugural Tom Burnett Jr. Hometown Heroes Celebration is 5-9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Hilton Mall of America. Awards will be given in memory of Burnett, a passenger aboard hijacked United Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. HEROES: TO PAGE 24

One without the other Surviving twins find solace, companionship at Twinless Twins Support Group convention in Bloomington BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER If just one cookie remained in the family cookie jar, Sandy Meyer and her twin Sally broke it in half and shared it. That’s how Sandy Meyer of Chanhassen explains her close relationship with her twin sister Sally. Growing up in Richfield, the fraternal twins shared a bedroom, a birthday and a unique bond. They were even known as the Walls twins; Walls was the family name. “It was like having a built-in best friend,” said Meyer, 59. “Even when we were mad at each other, which we were on several occasions, we knew we had the other to depend on.” Meyer’s life changed dramatically when Sally died at age 37 in 1989 from complications of leukemia. Meyer felt abandoned and alone because she had lost her lifelong best friend. Suddenly, she was a “twinless twin.” “I can see that losing a sibling of any kind is very painful,” she said. “But I think the closer bond that twins have from the
At
moment of conception and always doing things together, and just being such an enmeshed part of each other’s lives, is what makes it different.” Meyer began to adjust to her loss after she found other identical or fraternal twins who had lost their twin siblings. She joined the Twinless Twins Support Group International and helped to organize the group’s annual convention July 21-23 in Bloomington. The event attracted about 65 people from the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. While Sandy and Sally were close, they had separate identities. Except for fifth grade, they attended school in separate classrooms. Their mother dressed them alike until ninth grade, when Sally announced that it was time to dress differently because they didn’t look alike. “[Sally] had all the brains, all the beauty, all the boyfriends,” Meyer said. “We respected each other and loved each other and encouraged each other.”

All the world, including the church sanctuary, is a stage Theater company will perform ‘Narnia the Musical’ this weekend at Bloomington church BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS In the end the goal is to put on a good show, and to do so the Homeward Bound Theatre Company is presenting the musical version of the novel “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” in an unconventional way. The Chanhassen-based theater organization is producing “Narnia the Musical” this weekend. Its stage is Normandale Hylands United Methodist Church of Bloomington, showcasing both professional and amateur talent in the first of a series of productions planned in the coming months. The family friendly productions will be staged at the church because it offers “a place to do these productions and offer the community at large professional quality theater at a reasonable price,” according to Managing Director Bruck Kirkpatrick. and lighting equipment of Homeward Bound Theatre will help transform the church sanctuary into a stage for the weekend performances, Kirkpatrick added. The production has been on an ambitious timetable so as to avoid dragging it out for the entire summer, according to Kirkpatrick. Auditions were held in late June and rehearsals have been five days per week, including four evening sessions and longer rehearsals on Saturdays, he explained. Pulling together a show during the summertime, when there are many activities vying for attention, is not a sure bet, Kirkpatrick said. Besides finding performers to commit to a rigorous rehearsal schedule for a month, the show needs to sell tickets. “It’s a gamble to do something in the summertime and in these economic times,” he said. But at $18 per ticket, he’s banking that people will pay a few dollars more than a movie ticket for a live theater production. For the church, providing space for periodic theatrical productions by Homeward Bound Theatre serves as outreach to the community, Johnson said. The church periodically showcases the arts, and hosting a professional theater group for an audience beyond its congregation is an extension of that commitment, she noted.

Lazy, hazy dog days of summer? Feels like it Since writing this, the temperatures will probably have come down to what most people would consider a reasonable summer temperature. Yet, last week’s heat wave was fun to watch people squirm. Imagine living in Texas, or anywhere in the South for that matter, where a week of temperatures that flirt with the century mark should be welcome. Granted, there are health issues that go along with heat as high as it was, but taking that out of consideration for argumentative purposes – it’s summer. Enjoy the sultry weather while it lasts. Minnesota really is the land of extremes; the temperature swing between the all-time high and low in the state is 174 degrees! Tuesday, July 19, was one for the books.
CHRIS DILLMAN Excelsior/Shorewood Community Editor
It marked the third consecutive day with 80 degree or higher dew points in the Twin Cities; dew point basically measures the moisture in the air. Add a 119-degree heat index (also referred to as “feels like”) at MSP airport, tying the all-time high – though I saw 121 on the Weather Channel app – 88degree dew point in Moorhead, as well as 134degree heat index, the highest ever in the state, and it can be summed up that it was hot! We are, in fact, amid the
“Dog Days of Summer,” which are typically July through early September, and date back to ancient times. The period is named that because of Sirius, the “dog star.” So bring on the heat. Those not so much a fan of the heat usually say something like, “Well, you can always add clothing when you’re cold.” What I say to that is, unless you want to look and feel like Ralphie’s kid brother Randy in “A Christmas Story,” bundling up doesn’t sound too appealing. What does sound appealing is shorts, sandals and a tank top. There’s also the relief factor. When you walk from the heat into a place that’s air-conditioned, there’s instant relief. This, opposed to walking into a building that heated from
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Council candidate will ensure city lives within its means To the editor: My name is Russ Burnison and I am running for Bloomington’s District 3 City Council seat. My decision to run for this council seat comes after a number of years of watching my property taxes go up while my house value went down. In attempting to understand the budget as well as the budgeting process, I have become frustrated at the lack of transparency. I have resided in Bloomington for 19 years. I am a husband, father and grandpa. My National Guard service for 29 years taught me team building. My managerial experience for small businesses requires that I am accountable for every dollar spent. I will approach the budgeting
process by ensuring essential services (police, fire, water and street) are appropriately funded. All other services should be reviewed every two years to determine need as well as ensure measurable results. We as a city need to live within our means and our tax structure must be competitive with surrounding cities on both commercial and residential properties. As a conservative taxpayer, I pledge to you that I am serious about service and will not take the health care plan offered to council members at no monthly cost (but 100 percent of the monthly premium paid for by Bloomington property owners.) As your voice on the council, I will ensure you have input on council issues by communicating through email and town hall meetings. You can contact me anytime at russforcitycouncil@gmail.com. minus 20 degrees, where thawing takes much longer. Again, we could be Texas and have triple-digit heat for doubledigit days. Granted, I probably wouldn’t be singing the same tune if I didn’t happen to have an air conditioner. Yet, like extreme cold, extreme heat for too long of exposures can be deadly. Heatrelated deaths top every other death caused by weather combined, so make sure it’s enjoyed in moderation. We all know that weather around here always changes, and since heat like that doesn’t usually last too long up here, I welcome it with open arms. Because before you know it, it’s back to shoveling, snow emergencies and temperatures with a minus in front of the number.

Scouting for Uniforms drive tracking behind previous years BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Boy Scouts’ July Scouting for Uniforms campaign is lagging behind expected collection numbers. There are only a few days of the campaign left. As of July 20, the campaign had only collected about 75 uniforms. That’s onetenth of the goal of 750 uniforms. This is the fourth year the Boy Scouts’ Northern Star Council has partnered with Pilgrim Cleaners to collect used Boy Scout and Cub Scout uniforms for scouts in need. The Northern Star Council serves the Twin Cities and counties in central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Bonnie Engler, the president of Pilgrim Cleaners, started the uniform drive after hearing about a similar program in another part of the country. Kent York is a spokesperson for the Northern Star Council. “We’re tracking behind previous years,” he said. Each year the uniform drive has collected more uniforms than the previous year. The first year it collected 350 uni-
forms. The second year it collected 560, and last year it collected 564. York doesn’t know why the pace of uniform donations has been slower this year. He speculates it may have something to do with the recent heat. But he’s hopeful that the pace will pick up now. “It’s human nature to wait until the last minute,” he said. Through the end of July, uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Uniforms can also be dropped off at the Golden Valley Scout Service Center, 5300 Glenwood Ave. or the St. Paul Scout Service Center, 393 Marshall Ave between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Monetary contributions should be sent to Northern Star Council BSA, Attn: Kent York, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422. Info: ScoutingGoodForLife.org or 763231-7201 (Northern Star Council).

St. Paul man takes and the bait We e klaptop l y S u p e rcomputer, Savings! BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A 20-year-old St. Paul man decided a laptop computer and its case weren’t enough, not when the vehicle was ripe for the taking. The man, arrested July 18, didn’t realize the car he removed the laptop computer from, and later moved to a nearby motel parking lot, was a bait vehicle placed by the Bloomington Police Department. The suspect was
charged in Hennepin County District Court July 20 with one felony count of theft from a motor vehicle. If convicted he faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The vehicle was parked in a Mall of America parking ramp, equipped with audio and video recording devices, as well as notification equipment if the vehicle were to be tampered with. The laptop computer was placed on the backseat of the unlocked vehicle while a dollar bill and the vehicle’s ignition

key were placed in the front console of the car. Mall surveillance video and video surveillance within the vehicle showed a male enter the car and take the laptop computer, according to the complaint. The man returned to the vehicle several minutes later with the laptop computer and drove the vehicle to a nearby motel parking lot. From the motel he returned to mall property on foot, with the computer, and boarded a Metro Transit bus.

Mall of America security officers saw the suspect and escorted him off the bus, where Bloomington police officers took him into custody. The man was found to be in possession of the ignition key to the bait vehicle, as well as a dollar bill with a serial number matching that of the bill that had been placed inside the vehicle, the complaint noted. The laptop computer was found under a seat on the bus. POLICE: TO NEXT PAGE

Police FROM PREVIOUS PAGE A 14-year-old girl who was on the bus approached police, identified herself as the suspect’s girlfriend and initially gave a false name and date of birth, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. She was cited for giving false identification to a police officer, he said.
Kiosk theft Two men who said they intended to sell or pawn stolen video games for food were arrested inside Mall of America. A retail store employee reported seeing two men removing video games from a kiosk at 8:42 a.m. July 16, placing them into a backpack. The two men, 19 and 20 years old, were located inside the building by mall security and questioned. They were found to be in possession of 18 video games, val-
ued at $257, from the kiosk. They told police that cable securing the kiosk was loose, allowing them to remove games from it, Stehlik said. The 19-year-old man had no permanent address and the 20-year-old man gave the Salvation Army’s Minneapolis shelter as his address.
Buddha theft The cash in the front counter drawer wasn’t enough for the perpetrator of a theft from Award Nail & Spa of Bloomington. The building had been locked at the close of business July 17. The next morning an employee found cash missing from a drawer, as well as a Buddha statue from the front counter. Pry marks were noted on an entry door to the business, 3814 W. Old Shakopee Road, but doors to the building were found to be secured the morning of July 18, Stehlik said.

The south metro faith community has a new member. The inaugural celebration for the Sri Venkateswara Hindu Temple begins Thursday, Aug. 4, and culminates Sunday, Aug. 7, with its sanctification. Located in the former Spa Bella Casa building, 7615 Metro Blvd., in Edina, the approximately 18,000-square-foot space will allow the temple to expand its cultural education and outreach. “This is a place to come together, practice music and dance, as well as learn about Hinduism itself,” Vamshi Jonnalagadda, vice president of the temple board, said. The Sri Venkateswara Temple began with about 100 devotees close to two years ago in a small leased space just north of Interstate 394 in Golden Valley. “By summer 2010, the congregation really grew,” and is now estimated at close to 1,000, Jonnalagadda said. Those who practice Hinduism maintain small worship areas at home and pray there daily, but temples get crowded during festivals and other events. The Golden Valley location, 6250 Wayzata Blvd., was only able to accommodate
about 100 people. Jonnalagadda said Sri Venkateswara Temple, a non-profit organization, purchased the former salon for $1.6 million last fall and has spent about $500,000 renovating it. Temple Board President Madhu Reddy has led the effort over the last several months, making sure the structure meets Hindu temple standards and city code. Reddy, who was in India purchasing items for the new temple and celebration, was not available for an interview. Jonnalagadda said the location is ideal for its access to Highway 100 and Interstate 494, as well as its proximity to Nine Mile Creek, which runs behind the temple. Water is an important element to have near temples, he said. The Edina temple will be the second largest in the state behind the 43,000square-foot Hindu Temple of Minnesota in Maple Grove, he said. The three-level building includes an area for worship on the top floor that can accommodate close to 500, classrooms, a banquet hall and kitchen on the main floor, and storage and more meeting space in the basement. ‘Democratic Visions’ to feature nature center
FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Sree Kunduru, an executive board member who leads the temple’s food committee, said the number of classrooms would go from two to up to 10, allowing for more weekend classes in language, classical Indian music and dance. Education is a big focus for the temple. “We want to teach the next generation what our culture is,” said Kunduru, who, with husband Jonnalagadda, has two children. Kunduru said many other temple members also have young children. Language classes include Hindi, India’s national language, as well as Telugu, which the family speaks at their Eden Prairie home, and Tamil. Jonnalagadda, who leads the religious committee, also gives lectures on Hindu scripture. “Hinduism dictates a way of living,” he said describing the faith. To be considered a devotee, there is no specific rite, just adherence to the practice. One of the core beliefs is karma, he said. “We strive to be as gentle as possible, as good as possible,” Jonnalagadda said. “We also strongly believe that service to mankind is service to God.” In addition to education, Sri Venkateswara Temple has a focus on social justice and volunteers monthly at the People Serving People shelter in Minneapolis, as well as participates in holiday drives. Hindu temples can worship one of Hinduism’s god or many. With its move to a larger building, the Sri Venkateswara Temple is adding eight deities to accompany the main god it worships, Venkateswara – a manifestation of Vishnu, the preserver in the Hindu trinity rounded out with Shiva, the destroyer, and Brahma, the creator. Part of the opening celebration will
Hindu Priest Murali Vedala, left, assisted by devotee and Sri Venkateswara Temple vice president Vamshi Jonnalagadda of Eden Prairie, right, conducts a prayer Saturday, July 16, at the Golden Valley temple. The new temple in Edina will be nearly 10 times the size of the current location. (Photo by Katie Mintz • Sun Newspapers) There will also be other ceremonies, musical performances and a visit by Edina Mayor Jim Hovland. Jonnalagadda said in addition to Sri Venkateswara Temple’s priests Vamsi Kanduri and Murali Vedala, eight more will travel to Edina to help lead the celebration. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend. Jonnalagadda said the temple is open everyday of the week and welcomes visitors.
include “prana pratishta,” the ritual for bringing deities’ souls into statues. On a recent Saturday, the eight statues representing Venkateswara’s companion goddess Lakshmi, Sanskrit for wealth, in her eight forms – prosperity, health, agriculture, success, knowledge, strength, progeny and power – were packed in rice at the Golden Valley temple. They’ll also be immersed in water as a step of the ceremony, said Jonnalagadda. “When the deity is made, whether stone or metal, a lot of stress goes on it. We do this to bring that out as much as possible,” he said.

Master Gardeners planting

Do you have a question about what soil is better to grow a vegetable garden in verses a flowerbed, or are you curious about what type of wild mushrooms are growing in your yard? The Master Gardners are ready with the answers. “We are people who love to garden and love to go out and help others with their gardens,” Master Gardner and Richfield resident Gordon Hanson said. The Master Gardeners program is a national program with its Minnesota roots growing from the University of Minnesota. Coordinated by the University of Minnesota, each county in the state is equipped with an extension program. With over 2200 Master Gardeners in Minnesota, 300 of which count themselves as members of the Hennepin County chapter. The Hennepin County chapter meets once a month with a special speaker and presentation about any of the many gardening topics available. Also at the meeting, the Master Gardeners are given opportunities to sign up for many various volunteering adventures. “We are educators. We offer researchbased, University-supportive information,” Hanson said on why the Master Gardeners program is so special. According to Hanson, any of the information given by a Master Gardener has been proven with research to be effective and accurate. Armed with information, advice and talents, the Master Gardeners get out in the communities to benefit schools, community gardens, youth programs, environmental education programs, farmers markets and any other organization request-

ing their help. “There are thousands of dollars worth of volunteering hours invested in the communities of Minnesota,” Hanson said. Some of the specific volunteering tasks that Master Gardeners participate with include: • Teaching classes and workshops, • Answering phone inquiries concerning home horticulture, • Assisting with county Horticulture Days, • Teaching and demonstrating horticulture techniques in community and school gardens, • Teaching youth and judging horticulture projects, • Media interviews and articles on horticulture topics, • Speaking to schools and youth groups on gardening topics, • Holding plant clinics at garden centers and farmers markets, • Representing the program at county and state fair exhibits, • Horticulture therapy for both children and adults, • And teaching horticulture in hospitals, nursing homes and retirement centers. Every Saturday, from 7 a.m. to noon, at the Richfield Farmers Market in Veterans Memorial Park, the Hennepin County Master Gardeners set up a table with flyers and handouts with valuable gardening information and give the Richfield community a chance to ask any and all questions their gardens, lawns and landscaping. “I love going to the Richfield Farmers Market because I see people I know and am able to help people with their gardening needs,” Hanson said. Gardeners FROM PREVIOUS PAGE questions from how does one control Creeping Charlie — also known as ground ivy — in their yard to what time of year is best to transplant a Bleeding Heart, a perennial flowering plant. Although very knowledgeable, a Master Gardener may not know everything. When presented with a question of which the answer may elude them, Master Gardeners are encouraged to be honest and will put the asker in the right direction for finding the answer, according to Hanson. Most Master Gardeners are not people with horticulture degrees and many do not make their living in the horticulture field, but they have passion and a love for gardening, said Hanson. Becoming a Master Gardener involves three steps. First, the process involves becoming accepted by the local county program. After requesting an application packet an application, test and interview, with a background check must be completed. “In Hennepin County, the test questions are all based on gardening articles given in the application packet,” Hanson said. “And in the interview you are asked what is

your interest in gardening.” Next, the applicant must complete a Master Gardener Core Course through the University of Minnesota. The course is 48 class hours of horticulture training taught by extension educators and university faculty. “The course is a whirlwind of gardening topics. The instruction is really great because it is all the university professors and experts teaching you,” Hanson said. After the course, the candidate must complete an internship during their first year. The internship includes 50 hours of volunteer time to be completed within the first year of participation. “When your internship is completed, you are given active Master Gardener status,” Hanson said. But being a Master Gardener doesn’t end here. Maintaining the active status requires each member to volunteer no less than 25 hours and partake in at least 12 hours of continuing education each year. “It is a fun program to be a part of. It is very rewarding too,” Hanson said. “This is something you want to do out of love for the subject matter.” For more information, visit hennepinmastergardeners.org. Spotlight on Education “Imagine Your Future”
College-prep checklist for Minnesota Colleges 9th and 10th grades • Take classes that prepare you for education after high school, especially in math, English, science and social studies. Plan carefully with your high school counselor. • Visit your school career center or counseling office to explore information about careers and various colleges and universities. By 11th grade • Call the admissions office and ask for a brochure. • Explore college and university Web sites. • Request more information from the colleges and universities that interest
you. • Schedule campus visits this year and in the fall of your senior year. • Take the ACT or SAT test if you might attend a four-year university. One of these standardized tests is required for admission to a four year state university. (No ACT or SAT tests are required for admission to a two-year state college, but after you are admitted, you will need to take a test for placement in the appropriate classes based on your reading, writing and mathematics skills.) • Consider taking some college courses beginning in 11th grade if you are eligible.
During 12th grade • Make campus visits to colleges that interest you most. • Apply to college. For a four-year university, apply in the fall. For a two-year college, applications are accepted until the college semester begins, but applying early gives you a better chance of getting into the programs and courses you want. You can get an application: - From your high school counseling office. - website www.mnscu.edu - By mail by calling toll-free at 1-888667-2848.
• Apply for financial aid after Jan. 1 of your senior year even if you're not sure which college to attend. Twin FROM PAGE 3 After graduating from the University of Minnesota, the twins remained close and always celebrated their Oct. 5 birthdays together with cake and family dinners. Both twins married. Sally had no children; Meyer and her husband Steve had one daughter, Sharla. In 1989, Sally was diagnosed with leukemia. Sandy donated bone marrow for a transplant, but Sally developed infections from treatments and died after an eight-month battle with the disease. Besides her grief, Meyer had to confront a new identity. “There’s the whole issue of trying to figure out who I was, because ‘we’ becomes ‘me’ and that’s a really complicated thing to figure out,” she said. “I had no idea who I was supposed to be in this world.” Many twins are traumatized by the loss, said Nancy Segal, a psychology professor at California State University, Fullerton, who has researched twins for about 30 years. “It’s very devastating,” said Segal, a twin herself. “Birthdays become days of mourning. You become a constant reminder to everybody else that the twin is not there. People still call you the wrong name, there are all these reminders.”
Sandy Meyer of Chanhassen holds a photo of her sister Sally and a “memory bear” made from scraps of fabric from her sister’s skirt. Meyer lost her twin sister to leukemia in 1989. To cope with the loss, she joined the Twinless Twins Support Group International and helped to organize the group’s annual conference July 21-23 in Bloomington. (Photo by Roxi Rejali • Contributing Writer) Surviving twins sometimes adopt habits or behaviors of the lost twin, perhaps as a way to keep their memory alive, she said. Several trends predict an increase in the twinless twin phenomenon. Currently,
the twin birth rate for babies born in Western countries is 1 in 30, up from 1 in 60 in the 1970s, Segal said. Rates will probably rise as women delay childbearing and turn to reproductive technologies like in-vitro
fertilization, she said. Segal is a former twin researcher at the University of Minnesota, where she started a twinless twins support group. Meyer joined the group a few years after her sister’s death, and she remembers it as a turning point, allowing her to share feelings and memories with others who truly understood her grief. Memories have become a source of strength for Meyer. She treasures mementoes like Sally’s opal ring and a stuffed “comfort bear” made from scraps of purple, blue and green plaid fabric from one of Sally’s skirts. Encouraged to go back to school by Sally before her death, Meyer completed a bachelor’s degree at Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis and is now director of operations at Caryn International in Plymouth, a coaching center for models and actors. She also survived a breast cancer diagnosis 12 years ago. As time passes, Meyer has discovered that happy memories outnumber the sad ones. “I think the bigger thing than time is allowing yourself to open your heart to new things – new people, new loves, new adventures,“ she said. “Because if you don’t open your heart to new things to fill the emptiness, I don’t think all the time in the world is going to make a difference.” Info: twinlesstwins.org.

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. The Raise Award will be given to the Bloomington School District’s eighth grade citizenship program. The program was started by Burnett’s niece, a former Bloomington teacher, and faculty members at Oak Grove Middle School as a way to encourage eighthgraders to volunteer in the community. The program has been adopted by school districts across the country, Caauwe noted. The Hometown Heroes Celebration is intended to be an annual fundraising event to support the Bloomington Crime Prevention Associations annual grant program. Tickets for the dinner and program are $50 per person, $150 for tickets that include the pre-dinner reception. Tickets are 80 percent tax deductible. The BCPA also has corporate sponsorship opportunities available for the event. Hometown Heroes Celebration information is available at xr.com/heroes. The deadline to order tickets is Sept. 3. only to Taylor Reynolds of Waterville, Maine. Reynolds has been a regular in the 14-and-under division, finishing as
the runner up consistently until breaking through this year, in her final year of 14-and-under eligibility, Larson explained. The double-elimination tournament pitted April against Taylor in her first match. She lost to the more experienced player 7-3, but worked her way through the loser’s bracket to earn a rematch against Taylor. For the final match April didn’t have to defeat Taylor twice, but she did have to win nine games to take the championship instead of seven. April held a 7-6 advantage, but Taylor rallied to claim her first title 9-7. April’s unexpected success followed not only her switch from 8-ball to 9-ball, but a change in her shot, intended to help her shoot straighter. Teaching a new technique to a child learning the strategies of a new game was asking April to adapt to a lot of change in a short time, Maiers said. “I was a little nervous about that,” she noted. Maiers worked with April in preparation for the tournament, but typically coaches children in a group setting at league gatherings, she explained. “She’s definitely a good listener and has a good memory,” Maiers said. The 2011 tournament was below its

Tournament champions were crowned in six divisions. Local teams fared well in the tourney that attracted teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and SOFTBALL: TO PAGE 32

In the second game, the Under-30 all-stars defeated the Over-30 team. Firemen’s tourney participants and 350 volunteers battled the elements for four days. “Our crowds were down because of the heat and humidity,” said Firemen’s tourney director Jeff Barnes. “But we made sure players and volunteers had plenty of water available. We had one player sent to the hospital with heat exhaustion, but he returned to play for his team later that day. “We had many compliments from the players regarding how good the fields were considering the heavy rain we had Thursday and Friday. Hats off to the Bloomington Park and Rec Department for its field maintenance efforts.” Thursday’s scheduled home-run derby was cancelled because of wet fields. But the Park and Rec Department got Valley View’s main field ready for the two all-star games.

Former home health nurse enjoys creating healthier homes New Windows for America expanding its products, efficiency and facility Rhonda and Jim Steffes have owned and operated New Windows for America in New Brighton since 2000. Their business has grown to 30 employees and moved in March 2011 to a bigger location in New Brighton off of 35W. The company sells and installs residential windows, doors, siding, attic insulation, metal and solar roofing. “We started as a windows only company, but over the years have expanded to include more energy efficient products,” said Rhonda, who started the company after working for 10 years as a home health care RN. “I went from taking care of people to taking care of homes. We want to be your Energy Savings Solution Company.” Jim was a CPA working as the chief financial officer for a manufacturing plant before he joined Rhonda in the company. “We were founded after all the hassles and high prices we obtained while searching for windows in our home,” says Rhonda. “We felt we could do it better, cheaper and with less hassles for the homeowner. We become your ‘window guy’ for any problems, questions or
concerns. One call to us will take care of it.” With the federal government pushing homeowners to be more energy efficient, New Windows for America has joined forces with Xcel Energy and is now a trade partner. “Our relationship with Xcel Energy helps us help our customers save money by making their homes more energy efficient with attic insulation,” adds Rhonda. “We also made homes energy efficient with Energy Star certified windows, which can slash up to 40% off your home’s heating and air conditioning loss.” Solar roofing is another new product the company is installing so homeowners can eliminate a large portion of their home electrical costs, which in turn helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil. For the last nine years the company has received the Super Service Award from Angies List and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. They also have a 12 month Same-as-Cash financing program. Rhonda claims that a major key to their success is having the highest quality installa-
tion, adding how “most of our customer feedback is reporting how conscientious and meticulous our installers are.” New Windows for America offers a double lifetime warranty including glass breakage and lifetime labor. All vinyl replacement windows are guaranteed for as long as you own the home. The warranty in non-prorated and there will be no charge for glass seal failure or glass breakage to the present property owner or the subsequent homeowner. “If you provide lifetime labor warranty, it needs to be right the first time,” adds Rhonda. In addition to the lifetime warranty the company offers an energy guarantee. Their standard window is a triple pane which is 30% more energy efficient than double pane windows most other companies install. Besides being more energy efficient, Rhonda says other benefits of having new windows and siding include increased property value and security, noise reduction, enhanced appearance of your home and they are maintenance free and easy to clean.
Want To Lower Your Energy Bills? Slash up to 40% off the heat & air conditioning loss of your home.
Plus, the Remodeling Magazine's Cost Versus Value report concludes, when replacing 10+ windows with vinyl replacement windows, the home's immediate return of investment is 73.6 percent. New Windows for America offers all vinyl or a wood interior window that has the maintenance free vinyl exterior. This is a nice option for those who want to keep a real wood window in their home. The wood windows are available in both oak & poplar. “We have over 2,770 references, and have installed over 50,000 windows in the Twin Cities,” adds Rhonda. “Approximately 35-40 percent of our business is generated through referrals or repeat business.” Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The store is at 2123 Old Hwy 8 NW New Brighton. Information: 651-203-0149 or www.NWFAMN.com.
