Parking ramp g n approved for i p m a Normandale R Location altered, but neighborhood remained disappointed with plan BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A slight relocation for the proposed parking ramp at Normandale Community College is aimed at reducing its impact on the neighborhood to its west, but residents there weren’t satisfied with the end result. Despite their continued objections the Bloomington City Council approved the parking plan by a 6-1 vote. The ramp is being built to meet increased parking demands created by growth of the college. Residents questioned when the college’s continued expansion and renovations would end. “At what point will it be obvious that the welfare of our neighborhood has suffered,” asked resident Bobbie McAdam. McAdam was among neighborhood residents invited to participate on an advisory committee that met after residents objected to the plan at the council’s June 20 meeting. “Draw the line now,” she implored the council, explaining that shifting the ramp from the location initially proposed wouldn’t alleviate impact of it upon her neighborhood. The college had formed a design advisory committee to study possible ramp locations, determin-

Proposed drug deal in Bloomington ends with felony counts for MPLS man A 20-year-old Minneapolis man was charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree assault stemming from a reported marijuana sale at a Bloomington apartment building. The suspect, charged last week in Hennepin County District Court, allegedly assaulted an apartment resident after meeting him for a possible marijuana sale Aug. 2. The proposed deal between the defendant and victim was arranged by a third man who brought the defendant to the victim’s apartment on the 8900 block of Old Cedar Avenue. When the victim refused to allow the defendant into his apartment,

the defendant pulled out a gun and pistolwhipped the victim with it several times, according to the complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court. The defendant took the victim’s wallet after assaulting the victim and fled the scene. The victim had a large, deep gash to his forehead as a result of the assault, the complaint said. The defendant was arrested by Minneapolis police following a Bloomington Police Department investigation. If convicted he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine for the robbery charge and up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine for the assault charge.

South Loop development gets boost from the state BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington’s plan to extend Lindau Lane east of Mall of America as part of the greater South Loop District development plan now has $15.45 million in state funding to make it happen. South Loop is the area formerly known as Airport South, bound by Interstate 494, Highway 77 and the Minnesota River. It’s the area with the greatest development potential in Bloomington, and the pedestrian-intensive streetscape planned along Lindau Lane is intended to serve as its signature space. With its proximity to Mall of America and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, it is envisioned by the city as an urban center combining employment and housing in a district that is connected through transit systems to the Twin Cities and the world. The state’s contribution was approved with the Legislature’s bond-

ing bill appropriations last month. The city and property owners that will benefit from the access improvements provided by the project will contribute the additional $33.55 million. The total project cost is $49 million, not including land acquisition costs the Bloomington City Council approved last year. The city’s contribution to the project will be financed through funds generated for South Loop District purposes, such as special assessments associated with Mall of America. General fund revenue from the city’s property tax levy does not contribute to the city’s portion of the project. The council approved $10.7 million last year for the acquisition of two parcels, comprising five office and warehouse buildings, necessary to extend Lindau Lane. Once the new Lindau Lane streetscape is complete the remaining portions of those parcels will be sold for private development.

The city acquired 591,000 square feet. Upon completion of the streetscape and stormwater runoff improvements the city will have approximately 450,000 square feet to sell for private development, according to Schane Rudlang, senior civil engineer for the city. Lindau Lane, which runs along the north side of Mall of America, will be extended east from 24th Avenue. The project is intended to accomplish several goals in the area, including reducing accidents near Highway 77 at the intersection that provides access to IKEA, north of the mall. The intersection has the city’s highest accident rate due to the restriction on right turns from southbound 77 to the mall, according to Larry Lee, Bloomington’s community development director. The extension of Lindau Lane will connect Mall of America to Bloomington Central Station – a Hiawatha Light Rail Transit station – and surrounding developments. The

extension is intended to be pedestrian friendly and would also connect 30th Avenue with Central Park at Bloomington Central Station, Lee noted. Retail stores, hotels, galleries and sidewalk cafes generating pedestrian activity are expected along Lindau Lane’s extension, according to Lee. The street construction is projected to create 350 on-site jobs and 650 indirect jobs, such as off-site supply and manufacturing jobs. By 2020 the development is projected to provide an additional 8,000 jobs in Bloomington’s South Loop District, according to Rudlang. The state, which receives 27 percent of commercial and industrial property tax dollars, is projected to collect $33 million by 2021 through improvements and development in the district, Rudlang noted. Information about the district is available online at xr.com/southloop.

Childcare center finds new home in Bloomington BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS In most offices at Norman Pointe Center 2 in Bloomington you will find it is business as usual, but for one of the building’s newest tenants, playtime is an important part of the day. Kinderplatz Child Care and Education Center moved into the first floor of the Bloomington office building in the southwest quadrant of Interstate 494 and Highway 100 earlier this summer. Kinderplatz may seem like an unlikely tenant for a busy office tower, but its move coincides with the relocation of several federal agencies that rely on the independently-owned business for childcare during the workday. The program traces its roots to Minneapolis’ Calhoun Square during the 1980s, according to Executive Director Marianna Kähkönen. It started as a simple drop-in childcare center that eventually developed a preschool program. In 1993, Kähkönen applied to be the childcare services provider for the Whipple Federal Building at Fort Snelling. Kinderplatz was chosen, and within a year expanded its program to serve families with infants and toddlers, Kähkönen explained.

Kinderplatz moved from the Whipple Federal Building at Fort Snelling earlier this summer to an office tower in west Bloomington. (Submitted Photo) The building is being renovated under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, forcing Kinderplatz and several federal agencies to relocate, which they did in June.

The new home for Kinderplatz has eight classrooms and two playrooms in 15,000 square feet of space, as well as an outdoor play area. Services are available for children from six weeks through 5

years old during the school year, and children up to 10 are accepted during the summer, Kähkönen said. Kinderplatz is not limited to children of federal employees and is accredited for 98 children during the school year, 128 during summer, she noted. It is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Many on the staff of 22 full-time teachers have worked at Kinderplatz for 10 years or more, Kähkönen said. During the summer eight to 10 addition staff members are added, she noted. The teachers incorporate cultural education into the programs at Kinderplatz, decorating classrooms to coincide with a cultural theme and inviting families to share their cultural heritage in the classrooms, Kähkönen explained. “We have found that it is not only a great learning experience for young children, but adults and parents are learning a lot as well,” she said. Spanish-immersion education and sign language instruction are offered at Kinderplatz, and tutoring is available for older children during the summer, KINDERPLATZ: TO NEXT PAGE

A true story: My building was set on fire Pouring my first cup of coffee the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 3, it began like most mornings. Knowing I was going to Excelsior mid-morning, I decided to work from home to be more efficient. Looking back, I still haven’t figured out if that was a good or bad thing. I began checking my email and began work on my column about how important family is since I had just returned from my cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for some much needed time away. That column is temporarily put on hold for a more pressing issue. About an hour and a half later at approximately 10 a.m. the fire alarms start going off. Not an uncommon occurrence; they seem to go off numerous times a month. About 15 minutes into the racquet, I remember thinking how annoying it is and I’m not leaving until I smell smoke. Not long after that foreshadowing thought, a friend in the building busted open my door frantically asking me to help get their dog on the second floor. Taken back by the alarm on her face, it started dawning this

CHRIS DILLMAN Excelsior/Shorewood Community Editor might be the real deal. Upon entering the second floor, things got real. Thick smoke filled the halls and the adrenaline began to take hold. Not knowing the origin of the blaze, the “Rambo” in me took hold and it became a life or death mission. Retrieving the dog, which appeared unaware of the calamity unfolding, we made it downstairs. I went for my computer and camera to bring outside. Since there was no smoke on my floor, I pondered making a second run in for the flat screen TV but I’m sure some would advise against that. I put my life — read: camera and computer — into my car not knowing if I would have to make a hasty retreat. Not knowing the extent of the situation, that’s when I noticed people on the third floor taking pictures with their phones out the window. Knowing at the moment they were seeing something I

wasn’t, it was within seconds that smoke started to plume above the roof. “Ohhhh… this can’t be good,” I thought. The smoke began to get thicker and darker, and visions of hellish flames rising as the place burns to ashes amidst the terror of people flared through my mind. Well, that didn’t exactly happen, but what did happen was through the beauty of social media I was able to spread the scene unfolding. Only to have people “like” the images. Doesn’t matter how funny my captions might be, you are not supposed to “like” things like that. I digress. Then the sirens: Never before in my life had I been happier to hear the sounds of rescue on the way. A crowd drew as the Minneapolis Fire Department arrived and started putting the blaze out. The fire department was able to put the fire out before it was able to spread too far. Though, the apartments adjacent to the burned unit are no more. As expected, people start getting to the bottom of this.

And now for the kicker: Confirmed by the management of the property, some crazy woman, who probably is in her mid- to late 20s, must have thought eviction meant “Let’s burn this place down.” Upon hearing this, I knew right away whom they were talking about. Hearing from the neighbor below her, she had apparently purposely flooded the unit below her (might have something to do with getting evicted). Throwing her trash in the halls the night before, but that obviously wasn’t justice enough. Burn the building down, that’s the only way to solve that. Honestly, people never cease to amaze me. She even left her cat in the unit. Sickening. Hopefully she’ll have a “hug-me” jacket soon. All in all, nobody was hurt, and I have to give credit to the fire departments that protect us and can respond quickly to calls. Without them, it would be back to the days of throwing buckets of water on a building that is becoming an inferno. Risking their lives to save other, there still is some good in people.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CORRECTION Bike routes provide safe, enjoyable ride To the editor: I attended the alternative transportation discussion talks in the past and admittedly was quite skeptical as to whether anything positive would come from those independent consulting studies. I truly enjoy the bike routes that the city of Bloomington put in last year. There’s no question that it’s improved biker safety and enjoyment. It’s

definitely a good start to a creating a better city. Bruce Burton Bloomington

High school students are leading the way To the editor: Young people from our local high schools are making a difference for homeless and precariously housed youth of our suburban cities of Bloomington, Richfield and Edina.

As they have done for the previous five years, nearly 300 high school students raised awareness, raised money and maybe had some fun by creating a box city on the lawn of our state capital for one night this spring. The youth learn about creating a successful event and making a difference in the world. This year, Bev Bliss from Oasis for Youth spoke at the vigil about the gap in housing for homeless youth in the suburbs. At the Bloomington United for Youth July meeting Rachel LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

An 80-year-old woman died Tuesday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision in Bloomington. Barbara Leeman was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Penn Avenue Aug. 2 when she struck another vehicle head on, according to Bloomington Police Commander Jim Ryan. Leeman was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center where she later died. Two of three occupants in the second vehicle were injured. The driver, a 73year-old Bloomington woman, had a punctured lung and fractured ankle. Her 43-year-old daughter broke her foot in three places. The driver’s 3-year-old granddaughter was not seriously

injured, according to Bloomington Police Sgt. Charles Gollop, supervisor of traffic investigation. A witness statement indicated that Leeman was driving erratically prior to the collision. The cause of the crash is pending autopsy results. Alcohol is not suspected to be a contributing factor, Ryan said.

Bad check results in theft arrest for repeat offender Center, 3725 W. Old Shakopee Road, was paid for by personal check, a check later determined to have insufficient funds. The business attempted to procure payment for the machines, and was given two credit cards to bill the purchase to, but both cards were declined by their credit card companies, Olmstead said. The suspect has 14 previous arrests for issuing dishonored checks, he added. The sewing machines were recovered at a pawnshop, Olmstead noted.

BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS After more than three months of hemming and hawing, a 54-year-old Jordan woman was arrested for failing to pay a Bloomington business for three sewing machines. The woman was arrested Aug. 2 after allegedly purchasing three sewing machines worth $5,346 and paying with a bad check, according to Bloomington Police Commander Dave Olmstead. The April 27 purchase of three machines from Valley West Sewing

Attempted burglary

A 52-year-old Bloomington man was arrested Aug. 1 for panhandling at the intersection of Nicollet Avenue and 98th Street. The man was arrested the day after being cited for the same violation. According to state law, “No person shall stand on a roadway for the purpose of soliciting employment, business or contributions from the occupant of any vehicle.”

A glass door was shattered in an attempted burglary at a restaurant. Police were contacted when an alarm was tripped at Hunan Restaurant, 8066 Morgan Circle, just before noon Aug. 1. The exterior door to the building appeared to have been pried open and an interior glass door was shattered. Fresh blood was also found on the door frame, Olmstead noted. The perpetrator appeared to have searched the restaurant but nothing was reported missing.

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help

How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to August 15th receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Duo arrested after FBI agent’s property stolen Two suspects arrested in connection with the theft of personal property belonging to an FBI agent had attempted to use the agent’s credit card in Brooklyn Park. Milton Carlton Rucker, Jr., 38, and Tania Marie Thompson, also known as Tania Marie Carson, 34, both from Minneapolis, were arrested July 23 following the theft of an FBI agent’s pistol, badge, credentials, personal credit cards, watch and other items from a duffel bag inside a Ford Explorer owned by the agent. The vehicle had been broken into the previous day while parked in Minneapolis. The federal complaint alleges that Rucker and Thompson stole government property, committed bank fraud and committed identification theft. Following the agent’s report that his credit cards had been stolen he was informed by his financial institution that his card had been used at a Holiday gas station in Minneapolis and an attempt had been made to use the card at a Target store in Brooklyn Park. It appeared from surveillance video that the same woman was using the card during both transactions. Video from the gas station provided FBI investigators with a vehicle description and license plate number. The vehicle was registered to a different Minneapolis woman who said she had loaned the vehicle to Rucker when questioned regarding a failed June break-in attempt at a LifeTime Fitness in Bloomington. The vehicle had also been identified in connection with in a June vehicle burglary and theft of a purse in Minneapolis. The duo was arrested at a Minneapolis apartment where the suspect vehicle had been parked. A subsequent search warrant for the apartment resulted in the recovery of the agent’s watch and evidence from a break-in that occurred July 12, according to the FBI. Additional evidence was recovered from the vehicle.

Normandale project receives $22 million As part of the recently completed legislative session Normandale Community College received $22 million in funding to

move forward with the Academic Partnership Center project. Normandale had received $1 million in previous legislative support for the design of the project. “This is a very exciting time for the college,” said Normandale President Joe Opatz. “We currently have the highest space use and occupancy rate of any school in the state. We pride ourselves on giving each of our students a high level of education and preparation for whatever path they choose for the future. “With the passing of this bill we now have in place the framework for three important projects that will increase our capacity to deliver high quality education,” he added. The Academic Partnership Center will be 76,000 square feet and accommodate 28 classrooms and conference rooms as well as faculty offices and a computer lab. The building also provides space for business, accounting and hospitality programs and continuing education and customized training. It will be ready for classes in January 2013. Anibal (“Al”) Pabon II Anibal (“Al”) Pabon II, born October 8, 1965, age 45, of New Hope, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on July 22, 2011 in Millersburg, Kentucky where he was volunteering with the United States Army Cadet Corps. Al made his home in the Minneapolis metropolitan area where he worked for Hennepin County until last year. Al was preceded in death by his father, Anibal Pabon and his mother, Blanca Zapata. Al is survived by hundreds of friends, all over the world. Al graduated from Lane Technical High School in Addison, Illinois, in 1983. Shortly after graduating from high school, he joined the National Guard in Illinois and completed U.S. Army basic training and AIT. After an accident left him medically ineligible to serve in the military, he received an honorable discharge from the Army National Guard at the rank of Private First Class. After that disappointment, Al found other ways to serve his community and he became very passionate about his volunteer work. He was a volunteer member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) for 26 years where he had become a nationally known mentor to CAP’s public affairs officers. His talent and enthusiasm for journalism and media were infectious and he was known as an engaging storyteller and skilled teacher. Al was also a long-time adult leader with the United States Army Cadet Corps where he assisted with the administration of their national training program. Al was a part of Northwest Community Television where he was known as a talented television producer and enthusiastic worker. He served two terms on the Northwest Community Television Board of Directors. Al particularly enjoyed production work for local professional wrestling shows; "Slick Mick's Bodyslam Revue", "Pro Wrestling Today" & "SDW Wrestling,” among others. He was well regarded among the Twin Cities professional wrestling community. His passing was unexpected, but he was doing what he loved, working with cadets at a summer training camp and his last summer on Earth was a happy one. The people in charge at the camp reported that it took six people to replace Al. For anyone who knew him, that’s not surprising. His enthusiasm for everything he did and his upbeat character, even in the face of adversity, will be sorely missed by everyone he met. It seems God needed more enthusiasm and organization in Heaven, so he called upon Al. In lieu of flowers, his representatives request that donations to assist in the expenses for this unexpected event be sent to: The Anibal Plabon II Memorial Fund C/O David Palmer, Manager Merchant’s Bank 7300 147th Street W Apple Valley, MN 55124 A memorial service will be held at the Cornerstone Church, 3420 Nevada Avenue North, Crystal, Minnesota, 55427 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2011. Please join us in remembering our dear friend Al Pabon. There will be a Pot-luck after the service at the church. Please bring a dish to share. Interment ceremony will be held at a later date.

Over 70 members from Richfield, Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie and other Twin Cities communities attend each meeting to partake in discussion on political books and newspaper articles, current political issues, political candidates and upcoming politically fueled events. “Our main goal is to get together people with like minds to express in national and local political issues,” Vice President of the Republican Seniors of Minnesota Bob Maginnis said. The organization supports the Republican Party and its principles by making their voice heard to the politicians. “We foster our people to contact the politicians on how we feel,” Maginnis said. On Aug. 2, KTLK-100.3 FM morning co-host Bob Davis speaks to the Minnesota Republican Seniors about his political views and insights over lunch at the Richfield VFW. (Photo by Billie Jo Rassat • Sun Newspapers) Minnesota are not studying up on issues for themselves, but they are looking into the issues for their children and grandchildren because it’s the next generation that will be affected by policy changes, according to Maginnis. At the Aug. 2 meeting, KTLK-100.3 FM morning co-host Bob Davis spoke to the group about how important it is to read the news versus watching it on television. “Turn off the TV and pick up a paper,” Davis said. Davis continued to tell the Republican Seniors to read as much information as you can and balance it with your own life experiences to form your opinions.

According to Maginnis, the whole group loved what Davis had to say and they all felt that he was very enthusiastic about his opinions. “This was the first time we ever had a radio host speak,” Maginnis said. Other speakers this year will include state Rep. Keith Downey, R-41A, and state Sen. Geoff Michel, R-41. “We would like it if Congressman Erik Paulsen came and spoke to us about the current state of affairs on the issues of national and local spending,” Maginnis said. Normandale FROM PAGE 1 ing a lot that is used partially for staff parking near the intersection of Collegeview and Little roads was the best location. Nearby residents cited traffic, noise, lighting and visual impact concerns in objecting to the proposal, saying negative effects of the ramp would also impact property values in their neighborhood. The modified proposal is to move the ramp closer to the college, providing for additional vegetation that would serve as screening for the structure. The shifted ramp will be narrower and longer in its new location, according to City Planner Londell Pease. The site location for the ramp was chosen over two other areas of the campus because it met the most objectives of the plan, according to Jim Goblirsch of HGA Architects, who worked on the ramp project for the college. The location provides the best access to the college, doesn’t block pathways into the college and allows for a storm water runoff solution, Goblirsch said. Although no plan was proposed, lighting for the top deck of the ramp can be dimmed when it is unoccupied, he noted. Neighborhood residents expressed concern about lighting of the ramp because homes in the hillside neighborhood are at elevations higher than the top deck of the ramp. The landscaping plan for the ramp is also to be determined at a later date, Goblirsch noted. “A fair try has been given to answer all of the concerns,” he told the council. Councilmember Tim Busse, who cast the lone vote against the plan, was skeptical of the modified plan, saying he doubted the plan would have a positive effect on property values of the Collegeville Road neighborhood. “We have provided positive value to the neighborhood from where we started,” Goblirsch replied. Councilmember Steve Peterson weighed the concerns of the neighborhood versus the desires of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, which oversees the campus. Although the state college system may be sympathetic to concerns of residents, the city has limited opportunities to tell the state no, he explained, noting it’s not unusual for cities and state colleges to have disputes about development of a campus. Peterson expects the campus to continue to grow and said that its growth will have impacts on the adjoining neighborhood. The city’s goal should be to minimize the impacts. The goal can’t be zero impact, he said.

He encouraged the college to work with neighborhood residents in planning future projects and maximize the compatibility of those projects with the neighborhood. Councilmember Tom Hulting favored solutions that either forced students to walk further or required shuttle buses to accommodate the increased parking demand. Knowing that many students attending Normandale are from outside the city, he would prefer a secondary campus for the school rather than growth in Bloomington. Given that the campus is continuing to expand, he

wished that “the community part of Normandale Community College were a more operative sort of a notion.” Busse, who participated in the advisory committee meetings of recent weeks, said that the meetings would have better

served the neighborhood had they been held in January. He sensed of distrust of the college by residents of the neighborhood and compared the college to the playground bully, having the size and heft to do what they want and need to do.

BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Every BMX park in the country has one rider known as the Big Kahuna. He’s the one who sets the bar, the one who’ll attempt any trick, the one everyone stops to watch. At the Bloomington BMX park, located just east of Red Haddox Field in Bloomington, his name is Christopher Peterson. At 15, he is older than most of the other riders and definitely commands their respect. Riders at this park are into “freestyle BMX.” Ramps allow them to gain height for their mid-air twists and turns. Peterson can do a 360 (full revolution), and so can a few of the other boys. Top professional riders, who achieve more height, can do 720s, and Mat Hoffman, considered by most to be the greatest rider of all time, did a 900 in competition. Peterson, who will be a sophomore at Kennedy High this fall, trains at the Bloomington BMX Park almost every day. “There’s not really any fear,” he said in an interview last week. But there are injuries. “I have broken my collarbone, my hand and my foot three or four times,” he said. “Christopher has literally put his blood, sweat and tears into it,” said friend and fellow BMX rider Michael BaraboRose, 14. Tristin Tresise, 12, said he has learned new tricks just watching Peterson. “I’ve seen Chris a few times, and he’s really good,” said Tresise. Brandon Stokke, 13, gets almost as much lift off the ramps as Peterson, but he is not yet as experienced. “We are lucky to have a park like this in the neighborhood,” he said. T.J. Card, 9, was the youngest rider at the local BMX park. “In a few years, he might be as good as Christopher,” said Barabo-Rose. “A few pro riders come down here, but mostly it’s kids from the neighborhood,” said Peterson. Most of the riders are from Bloomington, but occasionally teenagers from Richfield will ride down Portland

Bloomington has home-field advantage at state Class A tournament

Bandits town team will host and play in two-weekend event at Haddox Field

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Bloomington Bandits hope to use home-field advantage in the 2011 state Class A amateur baseball tournament beginning Thursday, Aug. 11. Bloomington advanced to state the past two years but went 0-2 in each of those double-elimination tournaments. The Bandits should feel more comfortable at this year’s state tourney at Bloomington’s Haddox Field at Toro Stadium in Valley View Park. Bloomington qualified for state by winning a best-of-three series against the Edina ESOX last week. The Bandits won 7-3 Aug. 1 and followed with a 6-2, 12inning victory Aug. 3. The Bandits carry a 29-5 record into their 8:15 p.m. game against a St. Paul League opponent Thursday, Aug. 11. Haddox Field is the tournament’s headquarters, but Dunning Field in St. Paul will also host several games. State Class A games are scheduled at 6:15 and 8:15 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Haddox Field. Four tournament games are scheduled Saturday, Aug. 13, and Sunday, Aug. 14, at Haddox. Semifinal and championship games will be Aug. 19-20 at Haddox. “We are excited to both host

and play in this year’s tournament,” said Bandits head coach George Walker. “We were two games and out in the last two state tournaments but have a legitimate chance to win the title this season. We have the pitching, defense and hitting to be successful.” Bloomington had a hardfought playoff series with Edina after placing second in the Riverview League standings with a 12-2 record. Defending state champion Minnetonka won the league title and will compete at state along with third-place Riverview finisher St. Louis Park. Kyle Bassamore and Sam Baltes provided three hits each during the Bandits’ 7-3 firstround playoff win over Edina. Mark Hanson and Ryan Walker had two hits each. Josh Gist was the winning pitcher and Cliff Christopherson picked up a save. Bloomington survived 12 innings to eliminate Edina 6-2 in second-round playoff action. Christopherson pitched nine innings before Gist came on to earn the win by pitching one-hit ball for three innings. He struck out five. Gist and Christopherson have been the Bandits’ pitching aces. Gist has a 10-0 record and 1.90 ERA. Christopherson is 8-3 with

Bassamore (5-0) and Nick Cobb (5-1) have also been valuable pitchers for the Bandits this season.

Bloomington hitters posted impressive statistics during the regular season and playoffs. Baltes batted .371 with 26 RBI. Bassamore hit .355 with 26 RBI.

Other top Bandits hitters were Aaron Hoese (.365), Dusty Walker (.341), Ryan Walker (.337), Scott Davis (.327) and Alex Mack (.295).

The Eagles cut the deficit to one but left the bases loaded in

the bottom half of the inning as the Giants held on to win. The Giants had a regular-season record of 10-2 before winning two firstround playoff games by scores of 6-5 and 2-0. Members of the Southeast Giants team were Devon Bamum, Deonte’ Bryant, Jimmy Converse, Henry Doncavage, Robert Erickson, Casey Fuecker, Zach Halvorson, Christian Hammond, Jacob Lawrence, A.J.
