Square meals at the fair? That’s The Peg

Bloomington approves social host ordinance BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS

BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS For many people today is the first day of the Minnesota State Fair. For the owner of a popular state fair dining destination, today can conservatively be dubbed day 4. Greg Auge spends more than two weeks of each year running the state fair’s only full-service restaurant, The Peg. The restaurant is one of several businesses that operate before the fairgrounds opened to the public today. Auge and his crew began serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to vendors and fair employees on Monday, the first of 15 consecutive days The Peg will be serving Peg muffins and Peg burgers, as well as hotcakes and sausage, French toast, steak sandwiches and hot roast beef sandwiches. “A lot of people work at the fair because they love it,” said Auge, who calls The Peg a labor of love. “It’s very gratifying,” he added, noting “it’s got THE PEG: TO PAGE 15

Bloomington is joining other cities and counties in Minnesota that may criminally cite people who provide a venue for underage alcohol consumption. The Bloomington City Council unanimously approved its version of a “social host ordinance” during its Aug. 15 meeting. The ordinance provides “another tool for us to help address underage drinking parties,” Police Chief Jeff Potts told the council. The ordinance will be “a new piece in our multi-faceted program to deal with underage drinking,” according to Lisa Netzer, associate city attorney. The ordinance makes “individuals criminally responsible if they organize or allow a gathering where underage alcohol consumption is taking place,” he explained. A social host may be the tenant of a rental property who allows underage drinking to occur, property owners who know underage consumption will occur at an event or family members of a property owner, Potts said. Although property owners may be deemed responsible for a gathering where underage consumption takes place, it is up to police to prove that a property owner SOCIAL HOST: TO PAGE 21

A 28-year-old Richfield man said he was kidding. Bloomington police thought otherwise. The man was arrested Aug. 14 after a report of an attempted robbery at Walgreens, 3913 W. Old Shakopee Road. The man had approached a store employee at a cash register. Holding one arm behind his back, he said, “I want all of your twenties and fifties in the register,” according to Bloomington Deputy Chief Rick Hart. When the employee began to comply, the man told the clerk that he was kidding. He was arrested in the vicinity shortly after the 5:25 p.m. incident.

Police questioned the 21-year-old man, who was staying with his grandparents in Bloomington. When being questioned by police, it appeared the man had been drinking, a violation of his probation, Hart explained. The man was arrested on a probation warrant the same day of the burglary. Through questioning it was determined that the man had left a suitcase at a friend’s house. Police recovered the suitcase, which contained items reported missing following the burglary. Two laptop computers, an iPod, cell phone, PlayStation system and video games, jewelry and a watch were reported missing, Hart said.

Suspect kept coat hidden in her underwear during weekend in jail BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Brooklyn Park woman who concealed a fur coat in her underwear while sitting in a Bloomington jail over the New Year’s Day weekend has been sentenced to 23 months in prison. Stephanie T. Moreland, 47, was sentenced Aug. 11 to 23 months in prison after pleading guilty to felony theft in June. She was also ordered to pay $3,500 in restitution. Moreland was arrested Dec. 31, 2010, suspected of stealing a $6,500 fur coat from Alaskan Fur Company of Bloomington. After spending the holiday weekend in a Bloomington Police Department jail cell, Moreland was interviewed by an investigator Jan. 3. She initially told police she didn’t take the coat, but later

claimed she had sold the coat prior to being arrested, according to the criminal complaint. When told by an investigator that she would be charged with felony theft while in custody – meaning a trip to Hennepin County Jail in downtown Minneapolis for booking – Moreland produced the midlength mink coat from underneath her dress. Police searched Moreland – who is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 270 pounds – following her arrest, but the search failed to turn up the coat, which had been tucked into her underwear. Since there was no suspicion Moreland was in possession of drugs at the time of her arrest the search was limited to an external pat down and use of a handheld metal detector to eliminate the possibility that she had a weapon, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. Moreland was one of two suspects in the New Year’s Eve coat theft. She entered the store at the same time as another FUR THEFT: TO PAGE 16

Duo indicted for theft from FBI agent Suspects accused of using credit card in Brooklyn Park; tabbed in Bloomington case BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS The suspects arrested last month in connection with the theft of personal property belonging to an FBI agent have been charged in federal court with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. Milton Carlton Rucker, Jr., 38, and Tania Marie Thompson, 35, both of Minneapolis, were arrested July 23 following the theft of an FBI agent’s pistol, badge, credentials, personal credit cards, watch and other items from a duffel bag inside a Ford Explorer owned

by the agent, according to the FBI. The vehicle had been broken into the previous day while parked in Minneapolis. During the investigation it was determined that the suspects had attempted to use the agent’s credit card in Brooklyn Park. A vehicle connected to the suspects was also linked to a failed June break-in attempt of a vehicle at a Life Time Fitness in Bloomington. The defendants allegedly conspired to break into parked cars to steal credit cards and other financial items, along with personal identification information, then using those items to obtain

money from financial institutions and purchase merchandise from retail stores, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Following the agent’s report that his credit cards had been stolen he was informed by his financial institution that his card had been used at a Holiday gas station in Minneapolis and an attempt had been made to use the card at a Target store in Brooklyn Park. It appeared from surveillance video that the same woman was using the card during both transactions. Video from the gas station provided FBI investigators with a vehicle description and

During the execution of a search warrant at a Minneapolis residence where the suspect vehicle was parked, police recovered the FBI agent’s watch as well as stolen credit cards and other stolen items. There really is something for everyone at the state fair On Monday morning I was weaving my way through the state fairgrounds in Falcon Heights, on my way to take a picture for today’s paper. There were plenty of cars, delivery trucks and golf carts making their way through the fairgrounds as I drove toward my destination. It was a little too crowded for my liking, despite the fact many vendors hadn’t made it to the fairgrounds to set up their commercial display, less than 72 hours before the 12-day ceremonial end to summer in Minnesota. As someone who lost his appreciation for the chaos and disorder that is the state fair many years ago, it’s ironic that when I was looking to burn vacation time in 2007 and earn extra income for my future travels, I wound up at the fair. What was supposed to be a one-year venture – hawking merchandise – continues to this day.

MIKE HANKS Bloomington Sun-Current Community Editor

I spend more than 90 hours at the fairgrounds each year, and little of that is leisure time. But I do spend a few minutes now and again taking in one of the fair’s many attractions. Some people attend grandstand concerts at the fair, others enjoy rotating at high rates of speed along the midway. There’s one simple thrill I never tire of at the fair, going upward. Slowly. I ride the space tower every year, at least once. That minute at the top, circling around the tower, provides a great aerial view. During the day you can see for miles. At night you can see the lights that dot the downtown skylines of Minneapolis and St.

Paul. At any time of day you get a great look down upon the sea of humanity that congregates day after day at the fair. I could spend an hour up there watching the assembled masses below. For a different view, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers an 84step climb to the top of its fire tower, weather permitting. The tower opened in 1966, but stood silent for nearly three decades. In 2007 the tower was repaired and open to the public once again. I made the hike one morning last year. It’s not as tall as the space tower, but it provides a great view nonetheless. The fire tower is next to the DNR building, where the outdoor fishpond and indoor fish tanks attract hundreds of people at any given time. If you’re not elbow-toelbow on a busy Saturday afternoon it’s a great exhibit. You rarely go wrong with a live animal display.

The day the war came home It’s been a few months since my previous visit, but last week I found myself driving up to a church I’ve been very familiar with for years. From baptisms to confirmations to weddings — including my own — I’ve often been back to that same church to celebrate numerous joyful and happy occasions with family and friends. This was the first funeral. I cannot and will not claim a close friendship with the departed. To do so would be a disservice to his memory. At best, I can say we were childhood buddies. It was difficult to find parking, and I ended up walking a while to the church. Over the past decade, I’ve been lucky enough to never have to go to one of these funerals. But I can say with absolute certainty that, after 10 years, the wars our country is engaged in came home. I can’t pretend the conflicts overseas are just political maneuvering

DANIEL CALLAHAN Bloomington Sun-Current Managing Editor

anymore; war means heroism and it means sacrifice. I know this is the point where I am supposed to make an argument for or against the use of military force in other countries. You, the readers, might expect me to use this tragedy as an example of whatever “agenda” I might have. But, that's just something I'm not going to do. This is a time to remember those who serve or who have served and honor them for that reason alone. Forget the politics, forget pushing for drawdowns or surges, and remember that those things mean people – people who are willing to stand up and serve their country regardless of the cost.

That’s why Bob’s Snake Zoo and Monty’s Traveling Reptile Show are popular destinations year after year, as well as the livestock barns. I prefer an up close look at a caged snake over a penned sow, but to each their own. Either way, a look at the animals always takes my mind off of the human congestion elsewhere. And I’ve overdue to visit my favorite part of the fair, Heritage Square. Parallel to the midway, the square is often forgotten, yet I find it has more to offer than anywhere else on the fairgrounds. From the Minnesota Newspaper Museum that features a working printing press of yesteryear to train cars that now serve as museum showrooms featuring artifacts and pictures of fairs gone by, it’s a great way to spend an hour or two. I’m not one to recommend the fair to anyone, yet I’m proof that the fair has something to offer everyone.

Family Conversations with Bob Solheim, Little Hospice Director Family: We were sent by our social worker to tour your hospice and noticed as soon as we walked in the front door a sense of peace and calm in the house. Bob: Compassion is what you are feeling. Our nursing staff and volunteers are especially drawn to hospice due to their compassionate nature. No amount of training can provide compassion, it comes from within. We care lovingly for patients of all ages who are in need of end of life services…special care… delivered with dignity, integrity and respect, by highly skilled nurses. Family: My mother tells me that it is a long wait when she tries to call for help at the nursing home. What can I expect at Little Hospice? Bob: Call lights are our priority at Little Hospice, 20 seconds is the average wait. We want our patients to know that their comfort is foremost in our minds. Even a bumped call light is not a concern…it is a way for us to let a patient know that we are here to serve them. Of course they are comforted when they see us come into their room immediately…we want them to know that we care.

Family: I am concerned about taking care of my wife at home, it is getting very difficult. Bob: When you bring your wife here, you can let the nurses be the caregivers who will attend to her physical needs…now you can visit with her and just be her husband... spending those final precious days at her side. Our Little Hospice is staffed with nurses, nursing aids, volunteers, full-time cook, grief support and other helpful personnel. At any hour you will find at least two nurses at the hospice and actively caring for your loved one. You are always welcome to be here or call and speak to a nurse at any time. We care. Family: How soon can I get a bed for my husband at Little Hospice? Bob: We can have your husband here quickly. Normally a bed is available within one or two days. Bob: A good ending to a great life is an experience we all desire. You will find Little Hospice is the place that removes the burden of care from you and puts the focus on your loved one living each day to the fullest, free from pain and discomfort.

MTV trainer helps Richfield woman BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS

NEED NEW WINDOWS & SIDING?

In an effort to lose weight, one Richfield woman sought out a famous personal trainer. Tara Kingsley, 47, has struggled with her weight most of her adult life. After her mother died from heart problems stemming from weight issues, Kingsley knew it was time to make a change. “I know my genetics will be a factor and I don’t want a drawer full of medications because of my weight,” Kingsley said. With Kingsley’s love of reality television and bond with the reality weight loss programs she watches, Kingsley spent a month locating local personal trainer Nick Hudson, who was featured as the trainer in an episode of MTV’s “I Used to be Fat.” “I liked the way he related to the girl who just lost her dad,” Kingsley said. The season finale episode featured a teenager named Kelly from Faribault, Minn. According to

Hudson, Kelly struggled emotionally with her fathers passing and those emotional conflicts resulted in Kelly’s weight gain. “It ended up being a very emotional episode. Over the summer we shared a lot with each other,” Hudson said. After working on weight loss seven days a week, in the summer months of 2010, Kelly lost 50 pounds and began college in the fall at the University of North Dakota at 135 pounds. With Kingsley’s recent loss and the way Hudson dealt with Kelly, Kingsley knew she found the right trainer for her. “He pushed her [Kelly] and he was compassionate when he needed to be and that is what I liked,” said Kingsley. Hudson is based out of Success Personal Training in Maplewood and, with Kingsley coming from Richfield three times a week for one hour sessions, both have had to make MTV: TO PAGE 22

Edina resident takes the reins at State Fair Leo FourrĂŠ is horse show coordinator for Great Minnesota Get-Together BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Minnesota State Fair is much more than horseplay for one Edina resident. Horse Show Coordinator Leo FourrĂŠ is helping the popular riding events go off without a hitch. It’s not an easy task, said FourrĂŠ, who began working with fair administration last summer to streamline the show. Close to 700 horses are registered in English and western events during the Great Minnesota Get-Together, which runs Thursday, Aug. 25, to Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5. Balancing the trailer and hoof traffic with approximately 1.8 million visitors takes some work. “You’ve got all these large animals coming and going during the fair and 100,000 people on the ground at any time,â€? FourrĂŠ said. But FourrĂŠ said he welcomes the challenge. Though a city boy, the St. Paul native is no stranger to the fair. As a child, he frequently visited the fairgrounds only two blocks from his home. Over the years he’s shown horses, been a judge and sponsor at the fair. “When I grew up, on TV the heroes were the cowboys,â€? FourrĂŠ said. “Everybody wanted

to have a horse. Most kids outgrew it but I never did.â€? In high school, he worked as a stable hand and continued through college, where he earned a degree in architecture. For several years, he and wife Sharon FourrĂŠ, or Sharon Thayer when she graduated from Edina High School, lived on ranches in New Mexico, Colorado and Illinois training and showing horses. For the last 15 years they’ve been back in the Twin Cities. FourrĂŠ, a judging official with the American Quarter Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association and National Reined Cow Horse Association, still travels frequently to competitions around the world. Following the fair, he’ll judge one in Luxembourg. “It’s a lot of fun. I enjoy the judging and, of course, the traveling,â€? he said. Using his experience, he hired all of the judges for the Minnesota State Fair. He said much of his work was completed before the opening day, such as adjusting schedules to reduce the amount of time each entrant has to be at the fair and collaborating with the University of Minnesota on a contingency plan for disease outbreak. He’ll also be on hand at the Lee and Rose Warner Coliseum throughout the fair facilitating day-to-day activity. Part of his focus this year, in addition to making the shows more manageable for exhibitors, is making it interesting for guests as well. There will be an increase in education

during the events, so viewers can “have fun but also learn something about particular breed or event,â€? he said. Particularly for metro residents, the horse show and other livestock features are a key part of the fair experience, he said. “The people that come to the barns and Coliseum enjoy it because they don’t get to see the animals all the time,â€? he said. The air-conditioned space with plenty of seating also offers a nice reprieve on hot days. All horse events are free with admission to the fair. FourrĂŠ said there are two different kinds of competitions. In breed competitions, judges look at the horse to see if it meets breed characteristics, similar to dog shows. In performance competitions, judges look at movement or performance of a specific pattern. “It’s like figure skating. They go around the arena and do certain jumps and spins. They’re scored on how they perform the maneuvers,â€? he said. Draft horses, which can weigh more than 2,000 pounds each, are a highlight of the English Horse Show, with events every day from the beginning of the fair through Tuesday, Aug. 30. The Western Horse Show runs Friday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 5, and includes a number of exciting speed and timed events, such as barrel racing, he said. The High School Rodeo is between the two Wednesday, Aug. 31, to Friday, Sept. 2. For a complete schedule of horse events, visit mnstatefair.org.

Unsung Legal Heroes in Richfield, Bloomington Minnesota Lawyer recently named Teri Inderieden of Richfield, Jane Panzer

of Richfield and Lisa Weyrauch of Bloomington Unsung Legal Heroes. The award honors outstanding efforts of those making notable contributions to the legal profession throughout Minnesota. As a paralegal and litigation manager at Skjold Parrington Business Attorneys, Inderieden has been instrumental in helping the firm build a robust, scalable and technology-driven paralegal practice in real estate-related litigation matters. For the past 29 years, Panzer has worked as an Accounts Payable Specialist for Lindquist and Vennum, where she is seen as an inspirational team member and the heart and soul of the firm. Weyrauch joined Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. as a paralegal one month before the 35W bridge collapse in 2007, and instantly became an integral part of the team helping the survivors and families of the victims. Her work comes with an added measure of compassion and organization. “The Unsung Legal Hero awards the best and brightest who work in the legal field behind the scenes,” Vice President and Publisher of Finance & Commerce Inc. Steve Jahn said. “These are the people who provide valuable support for lawyers, who do the necessary leg work and who ensure the everyday operations of a law firm happen. They deserve their day in the spotlight and today is their day.” The thirty-two honorees will receive their award Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Hyatt Regency-Minneapolis.

Burnsville-based yoga class open to all despite means Instructor says it’s not about money BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS During these tough economic times, individuals interested in the yoga experience now have an option – one not requiring large monthly dues. Yoga instructor Sarah Mosser has created OMroom, donation-based yoga classes offered in Burnsville at Royal Banquet & Ballroom, 12750 Nicollet Ave., Ste. 203, above Jensen’s Café. Mosser holds two classes each week, 78:15 p.m. Tuesdays and 6-7 p.m. Thursdays. “I don’t think that yoga has anything to do with money. I think that business has everything to do with money,” Mosser said. “I’m not trying to run a business here. I’m trying to share my gift of teaching yoga with people who want to learn.” Regina Vong, Royal Banquet & Ballroom owner and a friend of Mosser, leases her friend space for her classes and has been a participant as well. She made me a believer, and I had never done yoga before.” According to Mosser, she created the class because she knows from personal experience the positive benefits

Coupled with this, Mosser said she is aware that some people may not be able to afford studio rates for a regular class. “I have fallen into a situation where I can help,” Mosser said. “I believe that people should have regular yoga available to them regardless of what their financial circumstances may be.” Currently a yoga instructor at a popular health club, Mosser commented on the limitations she wished to do away with in OMroom. “I felt that my students were being limited with the style of yoga we were teaching,” Mosser said. “I wanted to bring my students an open facility so that other students can come and have no limitations on their practice. I don’t want money to be a limitation.” Mosser expanded on various limitations that exist in other yoga classes at other locations and how limitations apply. “Some places, where I’m teaching yoga, there will be limitations about physical touch, which is understand-

This is Auge’s 28th year at the fair. Despite retiring from a career in the food, liquor and hospitality industry two years ago, the state fair keeps him busy each summer. After more than a quarter-century in business, The Peg is a bit like a family reunion for his extended family, his employees and his customers, he explained. Many of his relatives help run the restaurant, which seats about 150 inside and outside the AgricultureHorticulture Building. Of the hired help that’s not related to him, some of those employees are second generation, he noted. And each year Auge can count on seeing repeat customers that he only crosses paths with at the fair, he added. The daily meet and greets are couched in workdays exceeding 15 hours, Auge said. He starts his day at 6 a.m., making his way to the restaurant after early birds have already sat down for breakfast, a breakfast that is

Everything is made fresh at The Peg and about 90 percent of the food served is either produced or grown in Minnesota, a nod to the agricultural heritage of the fair, Auge explained. Barbara Marie Moore was called by the angels on July 28, 2011 to join them in heaven. She was surrounded by family when her time came, and her passage was peaceful. She was 75 and a resident of Bloomington for over 50 years. Barb is survived by her 5 children; Kevin (Leslie), Tony (Lisa), Patrick (Ilene), Marci, and Brian (Beth). She is survived by her 7 grandsons; Connor, Brandon, Parker, Allan, Seth, Spencer and Samuel. She is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews and her many friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Jack and Winifred Druhan; brothers John and William Druhan, and sisters Mary Jane Tennes, and Winifred “Missie” Heuer. Also preceding her in death were her former husband, Charles “Buzz” Moore, and his sister, Mary Lou Miller, together with their parents, Allan and Nellouise Moore, along with Allan’s second wife, Margaret Moore. Barbara was born April 30, 1936 in Chicago, and grew up in Libertyville, IL. Upon graduation from high school she attended Ripon College where she met her future husband, and then transferred to the University of Illinois, graduating with a degree in Teacher Training in Social Studies. Barbara moved to Minnesota after her marriage, teaching Social Studies at St Louis Park HS and then settling in Bloomington to raise her family. After divorce, she reentered the workplace first with the Bloomington Schools and later as an administrative assistant and then legal secretary, retiring in 2005 while with the law firm of Leonard, Street and Deinard. Barbara loved family first, and also enjoyed travel, playing bridge, and volunteering with VEAP, Loaves & Fishes, and People Serving People. She was active at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, serving on the Parish Council, Social Justice Committee, and as a Eucharistic Minister. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 10:30AM on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 9401 Nesbitt Ave S, Bloomington, MN 55437. Visitation one hour prior. that the duo was attempting to distract store employees, Stehlik said. A pillar inside the store helped screen Moreland from the view of store employees. An employee approached her as she appeared to be stuffing a coat up her dress while kneeling on the floor. When confronted by the employee, Moreland said she had not taken a coat, lifting the back of her dress to show that she did not have the coat concealed. It appeared to the employee that the woman was not wearing underwear, according to the complaint. The duo left the store and drove off with another man in a waiting vehicle outside. Employees were able to provide a vehicle description, including a license plate number, to police. A Bloomington police sergeant spotted the vehicle near Mall of America and conducted a traffic stop. A hanger from Alaskan Fur Company was found inside the vehicle, but not the coat, according to the complaint. The trio was arrested, but the two men were eventually released since Moreland claimed they had no knowledge of the theft, Stehlik said. After giving up the coat nearly 72 hours after her arrest, Moreland told police that she had removed the back of her underwear so that when she lifted the back of her dress it would appear that she was not wearing underwear and therefore had no place in which to conceal the coat, according to the complaint.

DeWayne Grant August 27, 2007 Honey! It has been 4 years, still hurting, still sad. Nothing is the same since you left me. The hurt in my heart never goes away. You were my strength, you held my hand guiding me through my darkest hours. You taught me what love really is and showed me how to be independent. You were my husband, my love, my strength and my best friend. The Happiness Day was when I married you, the saddest day was when I buried you. You are and always will be “the Love of My Life.” Watch over me My Darling. Loving and missing you each and every day, Your Wife Helen (your Greek) P.S. Kiss and hug our daughter Monica and my sisters Louise and Kathy for me. I can imagine the fun times all of you are having together.

Each year the pre-fair hype is about what new, unusual foods will be found on the fairgrounds. Often that hype is accompanied by the words “on a stick.” Auge tweaks his menu every so often – a few years ago he added a Chicago-style hot dog – but “none of our food is on a stick.” There are still several

places to sit down and eat a traditional meal, but the church dining halls of decades past are nearly extinct, yet The Peg is busier now than when he bought the restaurant in the early 1980s. Auge touts the consistency of his product and the familiarity of his restaurant as reasons people bypass deep-fried foods for a meal at The Peg. For some the attraction is simple. The restaurant is “a nice place to relax and be waited on,” he said.

About The Peg The Peg was an established restaurant, Kelly’s, when Auge bought it. At the time he was operating the Square Peg Diner in Minneapolis, so the state fair site became known as The Peg II. Auge’s business partner of 24 years, Tim Carlson of Maplewood, is on site each morning at 4:30, readying the restaurant to begin serving its first meals of the day at 6 a.m. The restaurant is open until 9 p.m. each day.

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to August 31st receive $100 off when you mention this article.

he added. The ordinance allows police to cite a person, regardless of age, with a misdemeanor for allowing underage consumption at a house or apartment, punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail. The citation is separate from a citation for providing alcohol to a minor. A person doesn’t have to purchase the alcohol in order to be cited as a host, Potts explained. Noting the most common place for underage consumption to occur is someone else’s home, Zamora said that a Bloomington survey showed that 96 percent of 600 residents surveyed said it would be wrong to serve alcohol to teens, other than their children, in their home. “There is support for not serving teenagers in homes here in Bloomington,” she said. Students and their families at Bloomington schools will be informed of the ordinance, Zamora noted.

Crime FROM PAGE 3 then leaving without paying for them, Hart explained. Loss prevention personnel confronted the pair outside the store, who were uncooperative and walked away. Bloomington police officers were able to locate the suspects inside the mall, leading to their arrest and possible charges of felony theft, Hart said.

Bicycle theft A 34-year-old Bloomington man claimed three men stole a bicycle at Smith Park. The Aug. 13 report alleges that the victim was riding a friend’s bicycle through Smith Park at approximately 6 p.m. Aug. 12 when a group of three young men stepped in front of him, forcing him to stop, Hart said. Two of the men had knives and threatened the man, who turned over the bicycle to the third man, according to the report.

MTV FROM PAGE 10 a commitment to Kingsley’s success. “She is very motivated, but she has had bad education about healthy living,” Hudson said. Kingsley’s routine consists of squats, lunges, biking and running, the body weight type of activities, according to Hudson. “When she throws her weight around she will lose more,” than

if she was to use weights, Hudson said. Hudson focuses Kingsley’s sessions on teaching her the functional things she can do in her daily life like resistance training and stepping on different levels of boxes, he said. “The thing that sets me apart from other trainers is that I don’t expect to see the body image change before I see a performance change,” Hudson said. Hudson times every bike ride and every run to make sure improvement is always being met. Then and only then, Hudson

states, physical results will follow. With a goal of 75 pounds in six months, at the time of the interview Kingsley had lost more than ten pounds after completing only five sessions with Hudson. “It has all been a struggle, but now I can say I am in the right place emotionally,” Kingsley said. Girls team outlook It was a learning experience for Kennedy’s girls soccer team in 2010.

Eryn Olson The 2011 Jefferson High School graduate shot a hole in one and finished first in a golf tournament July 14 at Hidden Greens in Hastings. Olson used a 7-iron to ace the 132-yard seventh hole. Olson also won the girls 16-18 age division at the state Junior PGA Players Club Championship title Aug. 15 at Chaska Town Course, shooting 79.

Girls team bids to improve on last year’s record Kennedy had a winning boys soccer season a year ago and Eagle head coach Dan Bushendorf looks for more success from his squad this fall. Kennedy finished 12-5-1 in 2010 after losing to Eden Prairie in a first-round Section 2AA playoff game. Kennedy finished in the top half of the South Suburban Conference standings. “Our goal is to keep improving and win a playoff game,” said Bushendorf. “Our team’s strengths are speed, passing and desire.” Kennedy’s senior tri-captains were starters last season. Noe “Rafa” Gomez is a returning all-conference defender. Jose Andriano, a midfielder/forward, was also an all-league pick. Kennedy’s other captain is Adam Huber, a defender. Kennedy has six other returnees. That veteran cast consists of sophomore midfielder Simon Broccard, senior midfielder/forward Drew Skog, junior defender Lexi Cruz, junior forward Alejandro Torres, senior defender Bishop Anyiwe and senior goalkeeper Chad Almann. Kennedy opens its season with a 6 p.m. home game against Buffalo Thursday, Aug. 25, on the Eagles’ turf field. The Eagles travel to Hastings for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday, Aug. 30. Kennedy remains on the road to play Shakopee at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1. “Apple Valley should be strong in our South Suburban Conference,” said Bushendorf. “We will be happy with continued improvement in league play.” Kennedy coaches are Bushendorf, Ken Kruse (assistant), Brent Fairman (junior varsity), Dan Brown (B squad) and Eric Johnson (ninth grade).

MARK YOUR CALENDAR Kennedy’s girls soccer squad will host Chanhassen in its season opener at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Eagles’ turf field. Jefferson’s boys soccer team hosts Armstrong at 5 p.m. Thursday on its turf field.

Tyler Anderson The Jefferson junior midfielder played for the Minnesota Thunder 95 soccer team this summer and helped it win Minnesota State Cup and regional championships. The Thunder was third in the nationals. Anderson was chosen to the Best 11 team in that national tourney. Anderson was allconference honorable mention for the Jaguars as a sophomore last season

JohnThomas Larson The Bloomington 12-year-old swimmer excelled in the Central Zone Meet Aug. 5-7 in Topeka, Kan. Larson was part of Minnesota’s winning 400-meter medley relay team in the national long course meet. He also won the 200 backstroke in 2 minutes, 29.74 seconds. Larson was third in the 200 IM, 400 freestyle and 100 backstroke. He placed sixth in the 200 free. Kennedy’s Paige Biffle (23) clears the ball during girls soccer action last fall. Biffle, a defender, is one of the Eagles’ senior tri-captains this season along with Hailey Beyrand and Desi Hartman. (Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer) The Eagles won only two games, but Kennedy head coach Sheryl Raithel expects much better things from her squad this fall. “Many things went wrong for us last season,” said Raithel. “We had a lot of returning players who we expect to step forward and be better this season. “I have been impressed with our team’s chemistry during the first week of practices.” Kennedy’s senior tri-captains are center midfielder Hailey Beyrand, defender Paige Biffle and midfielder Desi Hartman. “Hartman is little in size but plays with energy and passion for the

game,” said Raithel. “We are counting on our senior tri-captains for leadership.” Other returnees are junior Marissa Melby, sophomore goalkeeper Pooja Kapor, ninth-grade defender Dani Prady and sophomore forward Ellie Smith. “We have a lot of other varsity candidates we are still evaluating,” added coach Raithel. Kennedy hosts Chanhassen at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, in the season opener on its turf field. Kennedy remains home to play Albert Lea at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. The Eagles travel to New Prague for a 4 p.m. game Monday, Aug. 29.

Jefferson soccer teams set lofty 2011 goals Jefferson’s Tyler Tumberg heads a ball during a section playoff game against Eden Prairie last fall. Tumberg is a senior forward for the Jaguars this season. He is one of four Jefferson captains. (Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer)

Dan Storlien said he feels good about his team’s prospects. “We have won the section title three years in a row and have a similar goal this season,” said Storlien. “On paper, we should contend for conference and section honors and be a top 10 team. “We hope to get off to a fast start with a lot of returning players.” Jefferson’s four captains are senior defender Michael Hibbs, senior defender Mitch Velgersdyk, senior forward Tyler Tumberg and senior forward Charley Leslie. Leslie was an all-conference selection as a junior. Tumberg and junior midfielder Tyler Anderson received all-conference honorable mention last season. This is Anderson’s third year as a starter. Also back are junior midfielder Nick Mhiripirri and senior midfielder Zach Heise. Storlien expects varsity contributions from newcomers such as ninth-

grade midfielder Jackson Yueill, sophomore defender Alex Diperna and senior midfielder Yannick Van Grass. Jefferson meets Armstrong in the opener before playing Minneapolis South Saturday, Aug. 27, at Marsh Lake Park. The Jaguars face Minneapolis South at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Jefferson turf field.

New-look girls squad There will be many new faces in Jefferson’s starting girls soccer lineup this fall after the Jaguars lost eight of last year’s starters to graduation. Senior captain Hannah Werth is back and earned all-conference honors as well as All-State honorable mention as a defender last season. “We will move Hannah to midfield this season,” said Jefferson coach Sarah Connelly. “Her technical abilities are such that she could play anywhere.” JAGUARS: TO NEXT PAGE

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
