Bloomington’s Heritage Days

Board members disagree about current compensation, future contract negotiations

Gracie Stephens, 16, of Bloomington looks out at her cheering section during the Heritage Days pie-eating contest Saturday, Sept. 17, in Bloomington. Pie-eating contestants had to devour their servings without the use of their hands.

BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS As Bloomington Board of Education members approved the superintendent’s salary for the final year of his three-year contract and voted in favor of beginning negotiations for a new three-year deal, the tone to the decisions was anything but celebratory. The school board approved Supt. Les Fujitake’s 2011-2012 salary of $176,000 by a 4-3 vote. The same 4-3 vote started the process of negotiating the contract renewal. The three dissenting members of each vote expressed concerns about detaching performance goals from the contract salary and preferred to form a three-member task force to evaluate the leadership needs of the district before beginning any contract negotiations. Boardmember Tim Culver was the vocal leader of the minority, proposing that board members Arlene Bush, Mark Hibbs and Melissa Halvorson Wiklund be appointed to the task force. Hibbs and Wiklund were both on the dissenting side of the votes. Boardmember Jim Sorum questioned if Culver’s proposal for a task force was equivalent to a vote of confidence or no confidence in the superintendent. He pointed out that the board and school district continually undergo a needs assessment. “We’re entering into the world of micromanagement,” he said. The task force proposal was “totally unnecessary, and, dare I say, ridiculous,” he added. BOARD: TO PAGE 21

Another Bloomington schools building vandalized

A duo that has been cited for trespassing at Mall of America several times was found in possession of several items that appeared to have been stolen from mall businesses. The 19-year-old St. Paul man and 14-year-old St. Paul boy were arrested Sept. 13 and face possible burglary charges for their latest visit to the mall. Mall security officers recognized the duo inside the mall and called Bloomington police for assistance, Herman explained. The man had been cited for trespassing at the mall three times during the previous year and had an outstanding warrant connected to a trespass citation, Herman added.

iPad scam A 26-year-old Bloomington woman told police she had $300 snatched from her hand when she was attempting to buy an iPad in the Bloomington Walmart parking lot. The woman said she was confronted by a man twice inside Walmart, 715 E. 78th St., about 4 p.m. Sept. 9. She was asked if she was interested in buying an iPad. She declined both times, but saw two women making purchases from the man during separate transactions in the parking lot

For the second time in less than three weeks a Bloomington School District building was vandalized. Damage to Southwood Early Childhood Family Education Center, 4901 112th St. W., was reported Sept. 11, according to Bloomington Police Commander Kevin Herman. A neighborhood resident reported that windows of the building were broken. Police found two windows broken and a rock lying on the ground outside the building, Herman said. It was unclear if entry into the building was made, but nothing was reported missing, he noted. The incident follows vandalism reported at Westwood Elementary School, 3701 W. 108th St., last month. On Aug. 27, a passerby noticed debris from a broken window that morning and called the police. A window of the school had been broken

and a computer and ceramic coffee mug inside the building appeared to have been smashed against the floor. A sink inside the school had been plugged with the water turned on, causing it to overflow.

Is that goose poop? Nope, those are aeration “cores” on your lawn. Those cores are the result of a smart decision to aerate. Aeration is one of the most important natural and chemical free practices available to strengthen and beautify your lawn. Small cores are mechanically pulled from your lawn and left on top. This action helps control thatch, improves the soil structure, creates growth pockets for new roots, and opens the way for water, oxygen and fertilizer to reach the root zone of your lawn. The purse was stolen Aug. 7. A woman from Fenton, Mo., has set her purse down while inside the mall’s Sephora store, and left the store without it, Herman said. Surveillance video showed two people walk off with the purse. The video was sent out to area law enforcement agencies in an attempt to identify the male or female in the video, Herman explained. A mall security officer was able to identify the man in the video. An investigator contacted the 20-yearold St. Paul man who said he was there but denied knowing anything about the purse. He did, however, identify the woman he was with. In a phone conversation with the investigator she said that she had taken the unattended purse, according to Herman. The 20-year-old West St. Paul woman was arrested for theft Sept. 12.

Thousands of words, very little reading BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I’m not a photographer, I prove that almost weekly. But sometimes I wish I had spent more than one semester of college learning the finer points of photography, because a good picture is much easier to compose than a 1,000-word story. When I began my journalism career I often heard it said that film is cheap, take plenty of photos. That’s very true, but nonetheless there was a practical limitation to how many photos you could take at any given event. Nowadays the only limitation to taking hundreds of photos at a high school football

game or community festival is the size of the memory card in a digital camera. And if you take enough photos with the right camera and settings, by default you’ll end up with a poetic thousand words in stunning digital magnificence. When I see a great collection of historical photos, I have the utmost appreciation for the work that was involved, as a photographer in the 1950s had technical limitations that the

same photographer in 2011 wouldn’t have. So when I had a chance to see the photos of Irwin Norling, I was highly impressed. Norling’s photos, thousands of them, were compiled into the book “Suburban World The Norling Photos” a few years ago. The photos had been donated to the Bloomington Historical Society years ago, as they depict life in Bloomington, primarily in the 1950s and ’60s. I was loaned a copy of the book a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed the historic look at Bloomington. Norling was successful for a couple of reasons. For starters he took a lot of great photos in an era when cameras were

more labor intensive than their modern day counterparts. But his technical skills were only part of the formula. As is noted in the forward of the book, one of the reasons for Norling’s success was the fact that he was there. He wasn’t a professional photographer who chased high paying gigs across the Twin Cities, he was a Bloomington man who tirelessly chronicled life in his hometown. Even if I lived in Bloomington I doubt I’d have access to some of the scenes Norling photographed. Besides community events and happenings, he periodically chased the police cars and fire trucks of

from a group that met monthly and talked to a group that did things for the school district and its students. Judy was instrumental in forging ties with all Bloomington legislators, repeatedly putting education and educational needs in the spotlight. She spearheaded the districtwide food drive, encouraging schools across the district to cooperate and join together in a charitable undertaking. She was also instrumental in developing the council’s leadership academy, which initiated and trained incoming PTA and PTSA officers across the district. Lastly, she ignited the practice of bringing parent education speakers into the schools, benefitting parents of all school-aged children in Bloomington. I can’t think of a better candidate for Bloomington’s school board. Judy focuses on what’s best for our kids and schools. I fully support her candidacy and hope you will too. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Burnison will control spending To the editor: I would like to express my support of Russ Burnison for the Bloomington City Council District 3 position. I have worked with Russ nearly ever day for the past 20 years in a small business setting and can wholeheartedly say that you could not find a more passionate, informed and well-meaning individual for city council. Russ’ top priority will be to control spending at the local level and, as he says, live within our means. As we all know, this straightforward approach to politics has long been missing on both the local and national level. Russ will do everything within his power to make the tough decisions and control spending in fair and appropriate ways for the city of Bloomington. All residents of Bloomington would be extremely fortunate to have this individual representing

their best interests on the City Council. Rick Millenacker Bloomington

Intersection could use some blooming To the editor: As the intersection of France and Old Shakopee Road continues to improve lately, I wonder if any thought has been given to actually having some blooms in Bloomington. So many cities, small and large, have gorgeous hanging containers, even flower gardens in the available spaces at intersections. It takes a few people to maintain these things of beauty, but it would add so much to see some color instead of just green plants that resemble weeds. Dwan Golf Course has a lovely display each year, and it looks beautiful. France and Old Shakopee could look much more interesting next summer.

Gruggen is a proven leader To the editor: Do you ever feel like you need more of a voice in your child’s education, yet think you’re helpless in impacting public education decisions? You’re not helpless; you have a voice that needs to be heard. One of the best ways to be heard is by affecting the Bloomington Board of Education. It governs our schools and routinely makes decisions directly relating to our children’s education. This November, three of seven seats on the board are up for election. It’s our chance to be heard. Judy Gruggen is a candidate. I served on Bloomington’s PTSA council with Judy for several years, the last two of which she served as president. Her leadership turned our council around

Hopkins nonprofit holds annual kickball tournament on Bloomington fields BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Hopkins-based nonprofit Blair’s Tree of Hope will hold its annual Kickball Tournament and Bone Marrow Drive 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Valley View Playing Fields, 9000 Portland Ave. S., Bloomington. The organization was formed five years ago after Hopkins High School student Blair Anderson lost her fight to leukemia at the age of 16. Its mission is branching out to help families of children with life-threatening illnesses by providing them with day-today services (at no charge) allowing them to spend more quality time together. The Sun-Current recently caught up with Allison Tetzlaff, one of the Kickball Tournament’s organizers. About how many people do you expect to participate in the tournament? Tetzlaff: We have 15 registered teams (at least 10 players on each team). We also have a calendar kids game that will have a minimum of 20 people. And you can’t forget all the fans and kids that come with the teams, so we would expect around 200 people at the event. Is it mostly Blair’s friends and family who participate, or are there people who didn’t really know Blair? The tournament consists of many different types of teams – we have teams that are composed of Blair’s family and friends, teams that are from local kickball leagues, teams that have been formed in memory of other children who have lost

their fight to cancer and we have a team that has been formed in celebration of a child beating cancer. The dynamic and story of every team is so different and that is part of what makes this day so much fun. What do you think the participants like most about the event? This is a day filled with fun for everyone and that is what we hear everywhere from the players, spectators, umpires and volunteers. It is just a fun, friendly environment for all. Do you think Blair would appreciate the tournament? Absolutely! I am certain Blair is proud and honored of everything Blair’s Tree of Hope has done and is doing to help children and their families fighting lifethreatening illnesses. I know Blair will be looking down and smiling as she watches family, friends and strangers come together for a day filled with fun and laughter. And all of this with the mission to “Help Other People Everyday.” Anything else you would like to add? We are excited to have a free bone marrow drive at our event this year. We had the drive two years ago and are proud to say we had someone get called to donate and the donor was able to save a life with his bone marrow donation. We believe in the importance of the bone marrow drive as Blair was given another one-and-a-half years of life after her bone marrow transplant.

High school students help collect coats for kids BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Students at Blaine High School will try to collect 500 winter coats for children in need this fall. Each year the Business Professionals of America class (known as BPA) at the high school coordinates a coat drive as part of the Coats for Kids campaign. Pilgrim Cleaners started the campaign 26 years ago to help families who couldn’t afford to buy winter coats. Eighteen years ago, Blaine High School became the first school to officially host a coat drive to support the campaign. Lana Rice teaches BPA at Blaine High School. “The students collect coats before school every day for two weeks,” she said. This year the school’s collection will run Monday, Sept. 26 through Thursday, Oct. 6. “We do it as a class,” Rice said. “It’s not necessarily and assignment. We do a lot of volunteer work through BPA.” Sometimes students go door-to-door asking for coat donations. Some go to garage sales and buy coats or ask for donations. Teachers and students at the

At the end of the collection period, Pilgrim Cleaners sends a truck to pick up the coats. Pilgrim then cleans the coats and gives them to local charities for distribution. Rice said the campaign won’t merely make an impact on the children receiv-

ing the coats, however. It will also affect the students collecting them. “It makes them realize that there are a ton of people in need,” she said. She said it also help them to “always remember to give back to the community and volunteer.” Blaine High School is only one of the

schools participating in the Coats for Kids drive. According to Judy Sprague with Pilgrim Cleaners, Blaine High School has often donated more coats than any other school. “We’ve donated over 10,000 coats over the years,” Rice said. The school that collects the most coats this year will win a Subway party. Those who wish to donate coats can drop them off at Blaine High School or another participating school. They can also take them to any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the metro now through Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s campaign is sponsored this year by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. The charities receiving coats are Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Those who wish to send a cash donation should sent it to the “Coats for Kids Fund” c/o Pilgrim Cleaners, 3217 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN 55443.

Council turns maintenance over to property owners Portion of Oxboro District’s streetscape upkeep affected BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Property owners that were the recipients of landscaping and other streetscape improvements in the Oxboro District will now be responsible for maintaining improvements that are on private property. The Bloomington City Council approved the change in the district’s streetscape maintenance program during the its Sept. 12 meeting. The change came at the request of property owners in the Oxboro District who disliked the assessments associated with the city’s maintenance program. The program serves the West 98th Street and Lyndale Avenue area, and has been in place since 1988. District improvements were divided into public and private portions. Improvements completed earlier this year on the public portion

included replacing landscaping in front of sidewalks, replacing or repairing brick walls, railings, benches and waste receptacles, replacing damaged sidewalk panels, replacing and upgrading pedestrian ramps and revising or replacing irrigation. The private portion improvements included replacing landscaping behind sidewalks, removing wood retaining walls and revising or replacing irrigation. Under the revised plan the city will continue to maintain streetscape elements from the sidewalk to the street, the medians and the bell tower easement area at the intersection of 98th Street and Lyndale Avenue. Private property owners will now be responsible to maintain elements on their private property. “How positive are we that these folks are going to maintain the expensive stuff that has gone in there?” Councilmember Karen Nordstrom asked. The city installed hearty plants that won’t need as much water, according to civil engineer Jen

Desrude. The shared irrigation systems that are publicly metered on private property will no longer be operated by the city. The city will shut off water to each of the irrigation systems, leaving property owners to find alternative means to water their plants. The solution could be as simple as hand watering plants, Desrude noted. “It is not anticipated that it will be very frequent,” she said. Although the council agreed to turn over maintenance to property owners, they were still assessed for improvements on their property. Some property owners, however, were offered the option of completing improvements themselves instead of being assessed by the city, Desrude explained. Unlike assessments that are based upon how many feet of frontage a property has, owners in the Oxboro District were assessed for the plants that were placed by the city, Desrude said. Improvements on the public portion of the streetscape were paid for by the city, she added.

Hanks FROM PAGE 6 Bloomington to the scene of a crime or fire. I’d be able to get a few decent photos at a crime scene or blazing inferno, but Norling’s photos are the work of a guy who knew the police officers and firefighters of the city on a personal level, and was given access to moments most photographers of the 21st century only dream of. Norling’s photos feature a variety of Bloomington events that you’d expect, such as parades and car accidents, yet it’s the people I don’t know from Adam – such as the grocery store owner, Bloomington Sun columnist and cahiers at a Chinese restaurant – that are as interesting to look at. The old cars, the 1950s era prices on the menu board at the Chinese restaurant and the old-fashioned hats atop a quartet of nurses standing bedside in 1957 are as entertaining to behold. I’m not a Bloomington history buff. I never will be. I’d be hard pressed to read 10,000 words about Bloomington’s history, yet I could spend hours reviewing photos from Bloomington’s past, and the time would fly by. If you have an appetite for nostalgia, get a copy of the book and read Norling’s pictures.

Gov. Dayton visits unusual suspects in Eden Prairie Talks economy, legislative session, Vikings stadium BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS He may be a Democrat, but they invited him, anyway. Gov. Mark Dayton visited Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce members during a luncheon Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Olympic Hills Golf Club to talk about the economy and the role between private industry and government, among other things. The governor provided a recap of four economic summits across the state (with seven more to come), the proposed Viking’s stadium and thoughts on the recent legislative session and state government shutdown. In his state travels, some have said eliminate government at all levels and let the private sector work out economic problems, Dayton said. However, what he discovered during discussions with hospital officials in Fergus Falls serves as an example of how important it is to have good government with success in the private sector, he said. Dayton said hospital executives told him Medicare and further health care in Minnesota has made the difference between many hospital’s solvency and bankruptcy, since they have an increasing number of Medicaid patients. And, for every 10 jobs created in the health care industry, six private-sector jobs are created, he said, anecdotally confirmed by a new Fergus Falls Wal-Mart, which will employ 150 people. It’s also important to have strong educational-private industry relationships, whereby businesses can link with colleges, particularly vocational colleges,

Dayton also recognized that the No. 1 tax problem businesses face is property taxes, since the state has shifted the brunt of the tax burden onto businesses, whose property taxes have gone up 75 percent over the last eight years, Dayton said.

Overall, state economic health relies on a balance between government expenditures, tax sensitivity and efficiency in government spending – all while ensuring proper education investments are made. "Our future is about the brain power and then the focus of the education of your young people,” so they can be the

entrepreneurs and productive employees of the future, he said.

Education funding/ legislative session When asked if the state will ever meet its financial obligation to schools (since it has shifted payments to school districts to help balance budgets), Dayton said he wanted to have long-term budget solutions rather than further delaying school aid payments and issuing bonds, repaid through future tobacco sales, to tackle the $5 billion deficit. Those school aid shift and bond sale was part of the compromise Dayton made with legislature to end the shutdown in July. Those solutions are part of the reason, he thinks, that the state’s bond rating was lowered, which could raise the cost of future borrowing. The delayed school aid means many DAYTON: TO NEXT PAGE

school aid payments. She also pointed out that 90 percent of the bill that passed to end the government shutdown was part of a legislative proposal that Dayton rejected before the shutdown, but accepted weeks later. Other leaders also agreed to things they did not agree with, Loon said, and she’s hoping the impasse that resulted between a new governor and new legislators is avoided next session. She hopes issues can be resolved early in the session, before deal making reaches a “crisis point,” she said. “That’s what I’ve taken away from the session,” Loon said.

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE school districts will have to borrow money in the mean time, but Dayton said the $50 increase in per-pupil funding from the state this year and another $50 bump next year should help most districts recoup any costs from borrowing money. Those $50 increases were also part of the July agreement. Dayton proposed a more long-term solution, taxing the top two percent of Minnesota earners, who according to a department of revenue analysis, pay a smaller percentage of income than other Minnesotans, Dayton said. Dayton said he was not happy with the compromise, but the shutdown needed to end. “Compromise means agreeing to things you don’t agree with,” Dayton said. When talking about the Republican majority legislature, with many new faces, the governor said he had never met a group of people who thought, “compromise was a weakness and intransigence a virtue.” “… If you're a grown up and you're responsible,” Dayton said. “You make

And again that’s democracy. “But, again, I have no respect for someone who insists on having it their

way and then when it goes awry, tries to blame me or anyone else. That's unacceptable." After his speech, state Rep. Jenifer Loon, R-42B, said the governor’s comments about education funding were “right on” – nobody likes a shift in

When asked about alternative locations for a new Vikings stadium (a “plan b” to the proposed Arden Hills location) Dayton said he is not aware of alternate proposals. He is site neutral and only wants to make sure the Vikings stay in Minnesota, he said. He also doesn’t want to have any of the state’s general fund revenue going into the project. The Vikings have committed $420 million into the Arden Hills site, and Dayton speculated that commitment could reach $500 million for the estimated $1.1 billion project.

Board FROM PAGE 1 Board Chairman Chuck Walter was more direct in his questioning of the motive behind the task force proposal. “What is the problem we see with the current superintendent? Noting that the district is both financially stable and respected, Walter asked, “Where’s the problem? Hibbs said it was premature to characterize the proposal as meaning there is a problem. He did point out, however, that the board asked for evidence illustrating Bloomington students are making satisfactory academic progress, yet more that a year later the baseline data had not been provided. His example may be a significant symptom, if not a problem, he explained. Wiklund said that forming a task force is not a statement of a problem. “There needs to be a process, she said.

If the process goes forward, it doesn’t mean that there’s intent behind it or a predisposition toward one result or another, she added. Sorum said there was no need to break from past practice. Culver’s proposal for a task force to evaluate the district’s leadership needs was defeated by the same vote that approved the contract negotiation. In his request to pursue a new contract, Fujitake proposed an annual salary of $180,000 for the duration of the contract, in consideration of the challenging economic times. “My leadership is needed to provide, in these tough economic times, the stable financial environment that is envisioned in our strategic plan, he wrote in his request. Fujitake was the district’s executive director of finance prior to being hired as superintendent in 2006. His salary for the final year of his current contract will be $176,000, $4,000 less than offered by the board. Regarding the district’s

$180,000 offer for the current contract year, “After deeply considering the offer and the challenges facing our district, state and country, I have decided not to accept, he wrote in response to the board. Fujitake explained that his willingness to keep his base pay at $176,000 was tied in part to his desire to remove performance pay from the contract. His proposal to separate performance goals from his contract terms was offered after consulting with the Minnesota Association of School Administrators and an attorney, he explained. He proposed removing performance goals and compensation from the contract and leaving his salary at $176,000, and pledged to work with the board in setting and achieving goals for his position without a compensation clause attached to them. Culver said he was puzzled by the proposal to remove compensation that was tied to performance goals. “To me, we’re moving backwards, he said.

Wiklund said that in closed sessions to review the superintendent’s performance the board had agreed upon how the contract would read for the current year, including defined goals, and now the board was preparing to move forward without defined goals that were mutually agreed upon. Fujitake’s proposal to renew the terms of his contract as it was initially written, without performance goals, warranted tabling until the board’s next meeting, according to Culver. His motion to do so, however, fell to the same 4-3 outcome. Culver characterized the contract terms as the board offering a higher salary than Fujitake proposed, with Fujitake offering less oversight of his position. “We’re giving up what we asked for, he said.

Kennedy BB tryouts

Kennedy High School’s volleyball team will host youth night Tuesday, Sept. 27. All middle school and Bloomington Athletic Association (BAA) players wearing their jerseys will be allowed free admission into Kennedy’s 7 p.m. match against Rosemount. Drawings will be conducted for Spirit Wear. Varsity warm-up session begins at 6:30 p.m. Info: coach_nelson@msn.com.

Bloomington Kennedy boys traveling basketball team tryouts are 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, and Sunday, Sept. 25, at Kennedy Activity Center. Tryouts are for boys in grades 4-8. Practices start Oct. 17 and the season concludes the second week of March. Info: leaguelineup.com/ktb.

Football FROM PAGE 25 Burnsville clinched the victory on a 52yard scoring run and successful conversion run with 1:48 left in the fourth quarter. “We played better physically and a number of players showed improvement in this game,” said Kennedy coach Dick Weinberger. “But we need to play more as a unit and not make mental mistakes.” Hearns, a sophomore quarterback, completed seven of 19 passes for 110 yards. Warren had six receptions for 89 yards. Kennedy will face Eastview at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, on the road. The Lightning defeated Eagan 36-35 in overtime last week and has a 1-2 record. “Eastview is a well-coached and solid team,” said Weinberger.

Skippers sink Jaguars Jefferson’s football team will try to regroup after losing 43-0 to Minnetonka (30) in non-conference action Sept. 16. The loss dropped the Jaguars’ record to 1-2. Jefferson (1-2) will host Lakeville South at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Bloomington Stadium.. The Cougars (3-0) overpowered Apple Valley for a 45-6 victory last week. “We must eliminate mistakes if we are to beat Lakeville South,” said Jefferson coach Jon Leverenz. “Minnetonka capitalized on every mistake we made last week.” The Skippers scored on runs of 26, 22 and 8 yards. Minnetonka converted on passes of 29, 8 and 24 yards for its other three touchdowns. “I thought several members of our defensive team played well against a tough Minnetonka team that is one of the best in the state,” said Leverenz. “Defensive ends Johnny Kamp and Noah Larson had solid games along with linebacker Jake Olsonoski and nose guard Conner Weatherby.”

Shelanski is new coach Brett Shelanski, a Bloomington native, has been hired as Waldorf College’s new head men’s hockey coach. Shelanski worked as an assistant coach for the Edina Lakers junior hockey team. Prior to that, he was the head coach for the Minnesota Flying Aces and assistant coach at University of Minnesota-Crookston. Shelanski, 28, has a bachelor’s degree in sports and recreation management with a minor in coaching and business management from UM-Crookston. Waldorf College is in Forest City, Iowa.

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to September 30th receive $100 off when you mention this article.
