Classical music organization marking its 120th Weekly anniversary Super Savings!
BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s not unusual for Jack Purcell to get behind the wheel of his 1992 Ford Escort and push the bright orange relic of a bygone era to speeds approaching 80 mph. It’s a car that wouldn’t typically impress his classmates at Jefferson High School, but Purcell’s Escort is not the typical rust bucket one might imagine when picturing a car that is two decades old. Purcell is more than two months away from his 16th birthday, but that hasn’t stopped him from getting behind the wheel of his Escort on a weekly basis. Sans license, however, Purcell and his Escort stick to the oval racetracks in Shakopee and Elko New Market, where he races in the entry-level class on Saturday and Sunday nights. And in his second year he’s

Fashion with a different focus
Competitive pricing, valuable incentives, high performance homes, low interest rates. This IS the right time to buy.
During an interview for local fashion blogs, Susan Eckley of Bloomington explains the challenges of being 40 or older and trying to find stylish clothes that don’t look like they belong to a daughter or mother. Eckley participated in the Sept. 17 “Back to Me” fashion show hosted by Christopher & Banks and CJ Banks at Mall of America. The show invited women who are not models to participate in a fashion show that focuses on fashion and style for women of any size who are 40 and older. (Submitted photo)

Duo arrested, accused of numerous financial crimes BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two people suspected of stealing wallets and purses across the Twin Cities were arrested Sept. 21 at Hennepin County Government Center. The suspects, who had not been charged as of last week, are accused of several fraudulent financial transactions involving credit cards from the stolen wallets and purses in recent weeks, according to Bloomington police.
The 25-year-old Minneapolis woman and the 32-year-old Brooklyn Center man were arrested in Minneapolis last week, where they were attending a parole violation hearing for the Brooklyn Center man, according to Bloomington Detective Carolyn MacAskill. Bloomington is coordinating the charges against the duo for several incidents that occurred in Hennepin County, as state statute allows for a felony

charge with an automatic sentence of 48 months in prison when there are eight or more victims connected to identity theft charges, MacAskill explained. The duo is connected to several incidents outside of Hennepin County as well, MacAskill noted. On Aug. 19 two women reported that their wallets were stolen from Cowboy Jack’s restaurant in Bloomington. One victim said that she had arrived at approximately 6:30 p.m. and set her purse down on a railing while waiting with friends for a table. When a table was available about 10 minutes later the woman noticed that her wallet was missing from her purse. The wallet contained several debit and credit cards. The officer who took the report told the victim to contact police if any of the cards were used, according to MacAskill. The victim learned by 7:30 p.m. that an attempt to use one of her cards had been made at a nearby Target store. An attempt to purchase $400 in gift cards had been declined because the card the suspect attempted to use had already been canceled. Surveillance video provided a description of the suspect.
The victim later reported that her cards were used for two purchases totaling $570 at a Target in Richfield, and smaller purchases at a Super America and Walgreens in Shakopee. The second victim at Mad Jack’s reported that her purse, containing credit and debit cards and a cell phone, had been stolen from a chair in the restaurant, according to MacAskill. The victim reported several transactions and purchase attempts had been made with her cards, including a $433 purchase from Target in Bloomington and five purchases from Kohl’s in Shakopee totaling $1,145. A patrol officer who heard the theft reports over his radio noticed a suspicious white vehicle parked in the corner of a Walgreens parking lot, away from other vehicles. The officer noticed that a man was seated inside the car, but did not stop to question him after running the vehicle’s license plate through his computer. When the officer later inquired if the store had surveillance video of the vehicle in its parking lot he was informed by CRIMES: TO NEXT PAGE

the store manager that three women had attempted to purchase two gift cards that evening. They were denied the purchase when they could not provide identification during the transaction. They left the store, getting into a white vehicle with a male occupant. The white vehicle was registered to the Minneapolis suspect, who had been arrested in Bloomington June 18 on suspicion of theft from a vehicle and financial transaction card fraud, according to MacAskill. Through the woman’s previous booking photos and driver’s license photo it was determined she was the suspect in the Target surveillance video, MacAskill noted. Additional surveillance video showed the same woman making purchases at stores where the stolen cards had reportedly been used. An unidentified woman was also shown using the stolen cards in some store videos.

Further investigation linked the suspects to August thefts reported by three victims at Santorini’s Restaurant in Eden Prairie and a wallet theft at Shorewood Restaurant in Fridley, MacAskill noted. Investigation of those incidents provided surveillance video that appears to show the Minneapolis woman involved in numerous transactions, according to MacAskill. The Brooklyn Center man is also identified in at least one video. The Minneapolis woman was also linked to September thefts at Mermaid Bar in Mounds View and Blue Fox Bar & Grill in Arden Hills through surveillance video taken at stores shortly after the reported thefts of credit and debit cards. Through investigation of the September incidents MacAskill was able to identify a woman seen with the Minneapolis suspect. The 33-year-old woman, as well as the 32-year-old Brooklyn Center man, face possible felony financial transaction card fraud charges. The third woman had not been arrested as of last week.

Phantom candidates waste everyone’s time Each year when election season rolls around, a deep sigh echoes through our newsroom. To be honest, many deep sighs. It can be a very frustrating experience. For the most part, the candidates are good to deal with. They respond to our requests for information, make themselves available for interviews and generally take their bid for election serious. But there are always a handful who don’t. I call them the phantom candidates. Yes, they file to run, but that’s the last you hear from them. In doing our due diligence, we take above-and-beyond steps to try to track these people down to make sure they are included in our election coverage. We start out with an email generally, then a phone call and then a letter posted to their
PAUL WAHL Sun Newspapers Senior Managing Editor
home address. From there we go to asking other candidates if they’ve seen or heard anything of the invisible candidate. On occasion we’ve gone back and sent registered letters (which came back undeliverable) and in one case I remember a couple years back, I sent a community editor to the doorstep of a so-called candidate. He wasn’t home. He also wasn’t home two days later when the community editor paid a return visit. Over the years I’ve grown a bit less diligent about tracking down these folks. Who would file to run for
office and then not participate in the campaign? What is the purpose, other than to cost the governing entity money? I suppose it’s a way of “making a statement,” but what would that statement be. “I’m so hard up for attention I file to run for office and then don’t participate in the election.” That is the statement being made, as far as I’m concerned. Already in this year’s election we’ve come across several phantom candidates. Generally the first tip-off is when they have no online presence. All serious candidates today down to the most microscopic of entities have a website, even if it’s nothing more than a glorified campaign pamphlet. The clincher is when they don’t answer their telephone for days on end. When certified mail is returned, you know you’ve reached the end.
I suppose everyone has the right to choose how they will campaign – or in this case refuse to campaign. Maybe it’s time we put some sort of penalty into the election laws. If you want to be a phantom candidate and there is sufficient evidence to convict you, the individual in question should be sentenced to scrub floors in the office of the Secretary of State the day after election night. The threat of manual labor ought to throw some scare into these folks. Of course, law enforcement would have the same problem finding them that we have, but they have the power of subpoena. A bench warrant really gets your attention. It did mine. Ask me to tell you about that sometime. Meanwhile, don’t vote for phantom candidates. It only makes matters worse.
Someone should benefit from my time in college The last week in September is Homecoming Week up at my alma mater, the University of Minnesota, Morris, and I've been invited to attend a number of alumni events as a representative of the newspaper industry and to enlighten students on the pros and cons of working in journalism. I think. To be frank, I'm not quite sure why they picked me — I highly doubt the criteria for selection included “dashing, handsome and has access to frequent columns in a newspaper.” For whatever reason, the alumni office asked me to take a drive up to Morris for a few days to join in the festivities, and I plan to be there. (Or, I am there. The conjugation of that verb and formation of the sentence around it entirely rests on when you, dear reader, are actually reading this column.) My time in college gave me

many things: A healthy appreciation for seemingly endless insomnia, for example. Also, a solid understanding of how to buy exactly enough food to prevent starvation, but still have money for rent, electricity, perpetually popping bicycle tires and the numerous copies I was somehow always making in this increasingly paper-free world. So, in the spirit of education and giving advice that somehow, at some point, might be useful to those who tread the path I too recently walked myself, I dug down deep and came up with some thoughts for those just starting off on what-
ever journey it is they are on. Then I sat down and wrote that column, touching on the finer points of how to succeed in college. It was a fine piece of writing, if I do say so myself, and I was initially pleased with it. Then I tore up the page and deleted the file. You see, the reason I made it from orientation to graduation has less to do with anything I learned while I was there, and far more to do with a simple mantra that was given to me shortly before I left for school. This most important piece is one I cannot claim as my own, because it was given to me by someone close to me. I won't divulge his name here for risk of, well, nothing in particular. I'm just not sure he's interested in seeing his name in print — again. For those communications and journalism students reading this, yes, I am using an
anonymous source and, no, I haven't fact-checked his information. Deviations aside, he said, quite plainly, “Don't forget why you're here.” Why you're here: That's the kicker. It's advice that can apply to anyone regardless of whether they're in school or not. There are so many distractions that can crop up; interpersonal drama, bills, clubs, parties and everything else can get in the way. Remembering why you're spending the time, money and effort to fill every day to do what you do every day should be paramount. Don't let the minutia occupy your mind, learn to avoid the pitfalls and aim yourself toward what it is you want. Gather the knowledge. Staying on the path you've choCALLAHAN: TO NEXT PAGE

PUBLIC SAFETY Woman awakes to find stranger in apartment A 34-year-old Bloomington man was arrested on suspicion of burglary, accused of entering a woman’s apartment in his own complex without an invitation The woman awoke at approximately 1 a.m. Sept. 18 to find a man she did not recognize standing over her. The woman’s boyfriend came to the apartment complex on the 9900 block of Briar Road and talked with a man outside the building. Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Student security – What every college student should know As college students get settled on campus, fighting fraud may not be their top priority. However, college students are susceptible to identity theft and the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) recommends that they take seven simple steps to protect themselves on campus. In 2010, 8.1 million Americans – or 3.5 percent of the population – became victims of identity theft, according to the 2011 Identity Fraud Survey conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research and sponsored by the BBB. The average mean cost of identity theft is $631 and the average time to resolve identity fraud is 33 hours – time better spent studying. “Friendly fraud accounts for 14 percent of all ID theft crimes. This means that new roommates and friends have just as much potential to commit dastardly identity theft as foreign-based scam artists phishing on the Internet.
And identity thieves – friend or foe – think nothing of dumpster diving (or rifling through unattended trash cans) for unshredded paperwork or taking mail from desk tops or unlocked mailboxes. They can even cruise social networking sites looking for personal tidbits that may unlock a wealth of information elsewhere. “In this day and age, you can’t always trust your peers, said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of the BBB. “It’s extremely important for students to be vigilant in monitoring bank and credit card statements to spot unauthorized activity. Sign up for security alerts on your accounts and have them sent to your mobile phone so you’ll know if any changes have been made to your account. The BBB recommends that collegebound students take the following seven steps to fight identity theft on campus: Send sensitive mail to your parents’

This includes your Social Security card, passport and bank and credit card statements. On the coldest days this winter, Bloomington resident Patricia Halloway will have warm thoughts because 88 children she’s never met will have hats. Halloway recently donated 88 handknit hats to the Coats for Kids campaign sponsored by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. Making hats to donate wasn’t Halloway’s idea. Halloway, who is retired, learned to knit in her 20s, and she finds it relaxing. She wanted to find a way to use her hobby to help others. “I just like to knit, and I just was looking for a way to knit something for somebody,” she said. Then an aunt who lives in Indiana told Halloway she knits hats for local charities. “I thought, ‘I could do that — I have all this yarn and all this time,’”
Halloway said. So Halloway began knitting hats. Then she had to find somewhere to donate the hats. When she heard about the Coats for Kids campaign, she figured if children needed coats, they probably needed hats too. “I didn’t have coats, but I asked if they would want hats,” she said. That was about three years ago, and she has been making hats for the Coats for Kids campaign ever since. She has also begun donating knitted items to other charities. She said she makes about five or six hats a week in a variety of colors and sizes. Halloway hopes others will get involved however they can. “I’m sure that the 80-some hats I make come far short of the actual need,” she said. Halloway doesn’t think her contribution is worthy of notice, and she doesn’t COATS: TO NEXT PAGE

Coats FROM PREVIOUS PAGE brag about it. But she does find it rewarding to know children are benefiting from her work. “When it’s really, really cold, I like to think some kids are wearing them to keep warm,” she said. Others who wish to donate to the Coats for Kids campaign can drop donations off at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the metro through Saturday, Oct. 8. The campaign accepts donations of all sizes for all ages, including adults. Coats may
be new or gently used. Schools can also organize their own collections for the campaign. The school that collects the most coats will get a Subway party. The charities receiving coats this year are Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Those who wish to send a cash donation should sent it to the “Coats for Kids Fund” c/o Pilgrim Cleaners, 3217 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN 55443.

Race FROM PAGE 1 already garnering national attention for his early success. Yes, it’s his second year of competitive racing. Purcell’s racing career began last year as a 14-year-old at Raceway Park in Shakopee, the minimum age requirement to race. His father John, who frequented the races in Shakopee as a spectator years ago, is an automotive teacher in St. Paul. He had been talking with a student in his class about the student’s racing exploits. When the Purcells were given an idle race car, Jack’s brother Alec climbed behind the wheel of the car two years ago to compete in an enduro race, a longer race than the typical heats racers compete in on Sunday nights. Alec wasn’t interested in returning to the track last year, however, and that’s when Jack spoke up. It might have seemed like an unusual decision to let Jack behind the wheel of a racecar at 14, but he was a natural thanks to his snowmobiling experience, his father explained. It took some work to ready the family’s Geo Prizm for the 2010 racing season, but Jack made a less-than-spectacular debut at Raceway Park. Even as
Jack’s skills improved week by week the Prizm couldn’t compete with other vehicles in the entry-level class, according to John. The entry-level class limits performance enhancements, although it does require basic safety modifications, such as the removal of the car’s interior as well as side and rear windows, and the installation of a steel plate along the driver’s side door, John explained. Engine modifications are prohibited, and tires are limited to retail brands costing $80 or less per tire, he noted. Even with those equalizers Jack’s Geo Prizm was holding him back. The Purcells noticed that the successful drivers were often driving an Escort or Honda CRX. John bought a CRX to replace the Prizm, and the switch helped Jack compete with the weekly leaders during Sunday night races. He finished his first season at Raceway Park with a rookie of the year award and was sixth in overall points. The family decided to switch cars again during the offseason. When John found a cheap Escort available he bought it, making it Jack’s third vehicle in two years of racing. Jack chose to paint the car bright orange since many of the cars on the track are black and nobody was racing RACE: TO NEXT PAGE

Race FROM PREVIOUS PAGE an orange car. He chose number 26 for his car in honor of the title character from the movie “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” he explained. Adding Saturday night races to the schedule this year, Jack is garnering attention for more than his bright orange car. He has been in a two-car battle for the lead in the entry-level season standings at Elko Speedway and in the top three at Raceway Park. Earlier this season he was also the national points leader in his division among home tracks recognized by NASCAR. That earned him national recognition from NASCAR. And his success hasn’t gone unnoticed locally, according to his father. Jack has picked up a few sponsors for his orange 26 car, and his father expects him to cultivate additional sponsorships as he continues his competitive endeavors. Like most hobbies, there are numerous costs involved, including modest weekly entry fees. There’s prize money for winning the feature race each night, albeit a modest weekly prize of $70 at Raceway Park and $100 at Elko Speedway. It’s early in his racing career, and Jack has had his share of success, but each night at the track is still a learning experience. It’s not just the laps behind the wheel that provide his weekly lessons, he said. “You take advice from other drivers,” he noted.

Today the organization continues its service through its community concert series, offering performances sponsored by churches, music series and retirement centers. Thursday Musical also supports music education through grants that allow professional singers and instrumentalists to provide classroom experiences at no cost to the schools, Pratt explained. The organization also sponsors a young artist competition, offering nearly
$20,000 in scholarships to middle school, high school and college students, as well as opportunities to perform at recitals and Thursday Musical concerts, Pratt noted. Although its performers are professional musicians, not all are full-time performers or educators, according to Pratt. “They come from all walks of life, she said. “It’s a blend of top notch, high-quality musicians. The organization has maintained a Thursday morning schedule for its biweekly in part because its performances don’t conflict with other performing arts events throughout the Twin Cities, Pratt said. “We are a tradition and we are a concert that people seek out.

Kennedy breaks through with first football win Jones runs wild as Eagles defeat Eastview 31-24 BY GREG KLEVEN SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Kennedy ended three weeks of frustration with a decisive football win at Eastview Sept. 23. The Eagles built a 31-10 lead in the third quarter and eventually won 31-24 for their first victory of the season after three losses. Kennedy (1-3) will try to make it two wins in a row during its 7 p.m. homecoming
game against Prior Lake Friday, Sept. 30, at Bloomington Stadium. “I felt we played well in a few of our losses earlier this season,” said Kennedy coach Dick Weinberger. “But we came up short. “We played with more focus against Eastview. Our offensive line improved and allowed Lexis [Jones] to rush for 262 yards and two touchdowns. “Overall our defense played well and lineman Teddy Sunder had a great game. His motor is always running at a high level,” Weinberger added. Kennedy’s defense held a strong Eastview rushing attack to 70 yards.
Jones accumulated his 262 yards on 25 rushes. Kennedy sophomore quarterback Travon Hearns completed six of 12 passes for 78 yards and one touchdown. Kennedy trailed 10-7 after one quarter. Eastview scored on a 1-yard run and 25-yard field goal. The Eagles’ Arich Juberian caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Hearns. Abu Kamara kicked the extra point. Kennedy led 17-10 at halftime after scoring twice in the second quarter. Senior linebacker Donte Allen recovered a fumble for a touchdown. Kamara kicked a 22-yard field goal.
Kennedy took command of the game in the third quarter as Jones scored on touchdown runs of 57 and 42 yards. Eastview (1-3) made the final score close by completing a 78-yard touchdown pass later in the third quarter and scoring on a 42-yard pass in the final quarter. Kennedy hopes to celebrate its homecoming with a victory over Prior Lake (2-2) this week. “We had very competitive games against Prior Lake during the past few seasons,” said Weinberger. “Prior Lake has good-sized athletes and more depth than we do. “We will be challenged by a good team.”
Bunny Meier Meier won the Dwan Ladies 18-Hole Golf League club championship with a gross score of 163 for two rounds during the last weeks of August.
Travon Hearns The Kennedy sophomore quarterback completed seven of 19 passes for 110 yards and one touchdown during a 20-7 football loss to Burnsville Sept. 1.
Justine Legut This Kennedy junior setter provided 19 assists in a win over St. Francis in the Apple Valley Aerie Challenge volleyball tourney. Legut added 20 assists during a victory over Minneapolis Southwest. Editor’s note: Send nominations for Stars of the Week honors to sports editor Greg Kleven at gkleven@acnpapers.com.

Jaguar boys prepare for another strong soccer playoff run Jefferson kickers 5-2-4 despite demanding schedule BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Jefferson has appeared in the last three state Class AA boys soccer tournaments, and head coach Dan Storlien is trying to put his team in position for another trip. “We play one of the toughest regularseason schedules in the state to prepare for the section playoffs,” said Storlien. “We have already played seven ranked opponents and that good competition helps us get ready for post-season play. “It will be tough to win the Section 2AA title against such strong teams as Eden Prairie, Edina, Prior Lake and Kennedy.” Jefferson has fared well against highly ranked opponents this season. The Jaguars are 5-2-4 overall and 3-1-2 in the South Suburban Conference. Jefferson defeated Prior Lake 3-1 Sept. 22 at home. The Jaguars led 2-0 at halftime on goals from senior captain/forward Charley Leslie and senior forward Yasin Kayed. Junior midfielder Tyler Anderson was credited with assists on both goals. Prior Lake cut the lead to 2-1 in the second half, but Anderson came through with an insurance goal assisted by freshman midfielder Jackson Yueill. Jefferson senior goalkeeper Will Elfstrum made eight saves. Jefferson and Eagan battled to a 3-3 overtime tie Sept. 20. Tyler Tumberg, a senior captain/midfielder, scored twice on penalty kicks against the Wildcats. Anderson provided Jefferson’s other goal. Elfstrum finished with nine saves. “Anderson and Tumberg have really stepped up in scoring and been a force for us,” said Storlien. “Elfstrum has been solid in goal and has six shutouts.” Jefferson will host Shakopee at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, on its turf field. The Jaguars play Lakeville South at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Bloomington Stadium. Jefferson’s final regular-season game is 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Lakeville North. The Jaguars tied Eastview 2-2 Sept. 13. Senior Nicole Tobon scored one Jaguar goal with an assist from junior Madison Yueill. Junior Hannah Haaland also scored for the Jaguars. Sophomore Isabel Nutting picked up an assist. Jefferson goalkeeper Kari Dahlen finished with eight saves. Jefferson and Rosemount played to a 11 tie Sept. 15. Nutting scored the Jaguar goal with help from Lindsey Clements. “We outshot Rosemount 14-10 and left a few balls on the doorstep,” said Jefferson coach Sarah Connelly. “Defenders Hannah Werth, Sara Hanson and Tannah Zayed played well, as did midfielder Ellen Kokes.” Dahlen made 10 saves against Rosemount. Jefferson lost 4-0 to Woodbury Sept. 17. Dahlen and ninth-grader Renee Anderson shared goalkeeping duties. Jefferson will play Shakopee at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, on the Jaguars’ turf field. Jefferson remains at home to play
Lakeville South at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. The Jaguars conclude the regular season against host Lakeville North at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6.
Girls swimming Jefferson lost 96-81 to Eagan in a South Suburban Conference girls swimming dual meet Sept. 20. Jefferson had swimming firsts from Samantha Aamot in the 100-yard backstroke, Jill Crandall in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay team of Crandall, Grace Mandich, Caroline Harris and Lizzy Kaltenhauser. Bloomington Jefferson attained a second-place finish in the Eagle Invitational volleyball tournament in Apple Valley last weekend. The Jaguars defeated Bethlehem Academy (25-16, 17-25, 15-10), Eagan (25-22, 23-25, 15-12) and Wayzata (25-21, 15-25, 15-11) before losing 25-15, 25-18 to Blaine in the championship match. The Jaguars are 14-3 overall and 3-1 in the South Suburban Conference. “Britney Scherber has been outstanding on defense,” said Jefferson coach Michelle Grice. “I couldn’t be more pleased with her success and effort as a defender. “She leads our team in overall digs and has a digging percentage over 80.” In other action last week, Jefferson split a pair of South Suburban Conference matches losing to Eagan but defeating Prior Lake. The Jaguars lost to Eagan by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 Sept. 20. Jefferson beat Prior Lake 25-23, 25-16, 25-16 Sept. 22. Coach Grice believes ninth-grader
Gretchen Simonson has done a good job filling in for injured all-state player Haley Bodway. “Her composure and ability to contribute at the varsity pace so early in her varsity career is an exciting thing for the future of our volleyball program,” said the Jaguar coach. Emily Schadow is averaging 11 assists per set while directing the Jefferson offense. “Emily has adjusted well to our new offensive tempo,” said Grice. “She continues to improve her leadership on the court. “We are counting on Eliza Zachary and Ashley Peper to come through with more kills with Bodway out. Together with Kelley Wollak and Cassie Santiago, these seniors have a lot of varsity experience.” Coach Grice expects Bodway to return to the Jaguar lineup possibly in the next week or two. Jefferson will travel to Centennial for a 7 p.m. match Thursday, Sept. 29. The Jaguars will host Lakeville South at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.
Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
