U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar will serve as the keynote speaker this weekend during a celebration honoring members of the community in the name of a Sept. 11 hero. The inaugural Tom Burnett Jr. Hometown Heroes Celebration is 5-9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Hilton Mall of America, 3800 American Blvd. E., Bloomington. Awards will be given in memory of Burnett, a passenger aboard hijacked United Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. Burnett was among the passengers who learned aboard the plane that terrorists were aiming hijacked planes at structures such as the World Trade Center. Burnett and other passengers were able to thwart their hijackers, forcing the plane to crash near Shanksville, Penn., killing all

BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS The new school year brings a few changes and additions to Bloomington schools each year, but nothing quite like the addition to Poplar Bridge Elementary School’s library. The school is now home to a great white shark replica that had been on display at the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium at Mall of America. And the replica casts as imposing of a figure as the shark it is based upon, measuring more than 16 feet long. The replica’s mold was crated from a 3,500-pound shark caught off the shore of Daytona Beach in 1996. The shark is one of several life-size models that had been on display in the mall’s aquarium. The replica, weighing approximately 500 pounds, arrived in

Back-to-school preparations at a Bloomington elementary school required extra clean up this year. Vandalism was reported at Westwood Elementary School, 3701 W. 108th St., Aug. 27. A passerby noticed debris from a broken window that morning and called Bloomington police, according to Bloomington Police Commander Jim Ryan. A window of the school had been broken and a computer and ceramic coffee mug inside the building appeared to have been smashed against the floor, Ryan said. A landscaping rock was thrown through the window, he noted. Inside the school a sink had been plugged with the water turned on, causing it to overflow, Ryan added. The building was last occupied about 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. Police had not been notified of a building alarm activa-
tion at the school, Ryan noted. The damage estimate for replacing the windows is $2,000, Ryan said. No other damage estimate was available.
Mall threats Police responded to two threats recently involving Mall of America, one originating from Milwaukee. The first involved an Aug. 26 phone call from a Milwaukee man who identified himself to a Mall of America operator and said he was coming to the mall to take it over because it was his, as well as stating he was the new president and that President Barack Obama was going to die within a few days. The operator reported the call to Bloomington police, including a phone number that was linked to a 31-year-old Milwaukee man. The information gathered by Bloomington police was forwarded to the U.S. Secret Service, Ryan said. A day later police were dispatched following a report of a bomb threat. Police received a call from a Wyoming woman who said that her second cousin, a 57year-old Minneapolis man, had called COPS: TO PAGE 7A

Times change, education changes with it I was one of those odd children who couldn’t wait for school to begin each fall. There is only so much laying in the grass and reading you can do before boredom sets in. The alternative, of course, was having to mow that dang lawn. We had acres of it. An informal survey I have conducted the past few weeks asking school children about the return of school days confirmed that children today have much the same feeling. Most are excited to get back into the routine of classes, studying and friends. Heavy emphasis on friends. Education today, it seems, has a thriving social component. While children may text each other, talk via Facebook or phone, there seems to be a connection that only face-toface interaction can provide. A lot of people today ring

their hands and fret about “what the world is coming to” with today’s generation of children who are nothing like we were at the same age. I’m not in that camp. I have looked over to the other side and liked what I saw. Today’s children are sharp cookies. They are informed, caring young people who face the world with a different sort of outlook than we did. Yeah there are a handful you’d like to take out behind the woodshed and spank, but for the most part, the children I interact with are impressive. During a school year, I usu-
ally have a couple opportunities to spend time with high schoolers. All I can say is I’m glad I will not have to compete against any of them for a job. Their natural affinity for technology puts them lightyears ahead of those in their 30s or 40s – much less their 50s. Although technology clearly isn’t the be-all and end-all, it’s difficult to downplay the importance of mastering electronic communication. I also spent time with a class of middle-school students last year who were among the most impressive I’ve met. I was introduced to the material they were learning as a freshman in college. If you are one of those who has doubts about what our future holds based on today’s youth, I would encourage you to get out of your bunker and
engage in first-hand observation. Most schools welcome volunteers with open arms. If you have something to offer, they’ll find a place for you. Make it your goal to get to know at least a handful of young people this school year, whether through your schools, churches or a nonprofit. Go with an open mind. Be prepared for a noise level that may be foreign to you. Allow for individuality. Smile. After your adventure, let me know what you think. If you still find you have to bash education and today’s youth in general, you will at least have a basis and perspective for your conclusions. Here’s wishing all students everywhere, as well as their teachers, a productive and fruitful school year.

My concern is how our park is going downhill day by day. By this I mean the sidewalks are completely overgrown, there are goose droppings on the sidewalk and paper that kids leave on the ground and cups all over. It just looks very displeasing. I have lived in Bloomington for 36 years and have never seen it this bad before. If we residents were to leave our yards like that we would get a citation from the city. We pay taxes, we all live here and use the parks, it’s a shame that they aren’t taken care of properly. There are garbage cans posted at the baseball diamonds and the parks so there really isn’t any excuse for people and kids not to put their trash in the receptacles. Edwina Walior Bloomington
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Normandale makes big changes To the editor: In today’s modern economy, cost and quality of education have become important issues. A quality education is a valuable tool to success, but finances can present a large obstacle. Normandale Community College presents the best of both worlds with an intimate setting and an excellent education at an affordable price. Normandale has experienced a 50 percent growth in enrollment over the past decade, and will serve over 15,000 students this academic year. That growth matches the demand for higher education in the south metro suburbs. Fully a quarter of all Jefferson and
Kennedy high school students come to Normandale the fall after their graduation. With that growth have come challenges, including a lack of classroom and other space. To address those needs, three important building projects are in the final stages of completion or will get underway this fall. The Kopp Student Center recently opened providing a renovated and expanded student service venue, and Normandale also received approval to build a 725 stall parking ramp, which will reduce the parking shortage on our campus. Finally and most importantly, we received approval from the legislature and Governor for a $23 million Academic Partnership Center. Some key components of the APC include

A 50-year-old Bloomington man was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault after a dispute with his girlfriend. The couple shares a residence on the 5200 block of 102nd Street West and had been arguing Aug. 29, Ryan explained. The 39-year-old woman told her boyfriend that she was going to leave for work early, but didn’t specify her reason for doing so. He became upset and refused to let her leave, Ryan said. The woman fled the residence more than an hour later. Witnesses reported seeing her boyfriend chasing her, Ryan noted. She called 911 about 3:30 p.m. Police found abrasions and scrapes on the woman, including her neck. The suspect was not arrested at the scene but later turned himself into police, Ryan said.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-
tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. Erik Paulsen talks debt and taxes at Eden Prairie luncheon BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Congressman Erik Paulsen thinks a bubble, of sorts, is going to pop in Washington, D.C. There was the dotcom bubble in the 1990s and the housing bubble a couple years ago, and Congress will continue trying to air out a federal spending bubble once the session continues in September. Paulsen is a second-term Republican U.S. Congressman representing

Minnesota’s 3rd District (much of the west Twin Cities suburbs) in the House of Representatives. He shared this bubble perspective, and insights on many other topics, during a luncheon hosted by the Eden Prairie and Edina chambers of commerce Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Eden Prairie. “I really do think we’re kind in this federal – or government spending bubble right now,” Paulsen said. “And the question is sort of, when does that bubble pop? I think we’re kind of popping it right now,

It consists of all elected officials, all democrats and republicans from both the House and Senate, and they are all experts in their topic. Given that makeup and the pressing consequences of not reaching an agreement, Paulsen said the committee

The bill also called for the creation of a super committee that has until Thanksgiving to create $1.5 trillion in cuts over ten years. That committee is the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, made of six democrats and six republicans. If the committee doesn’t reach an agreement, $1.2 trillion in cuts will automatical-

Celebrating the end of Ramadan Eleven-month-old Rayaan Zaidi of Bloomington, sits in a Brooklyn Park police car at a celebration in Brooklyn Park. Muslims from across the metro gathered at the Ja’afari Islamic Center in Brooklyn Park for a carnival celebrating Eid, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting for Muslims. Eid is the biggest holiday on the Muslim calendar. The carnival featured traditional and nontraditional food, a visit from the Brooklyn Park Police, clothing vendors, games, inflatables, a magician and more.

might have a shot at reaching an agreement. Another part of that Aug. 2 legislation requires further action from Congress to increase the debt ceiling. “I’m expecting that congress is going to disapprove of raising the debt limit at the end of September,” Paulsen said. The president will have a chance to veto that, Paulsen said, and he thinks the
Democrat-controlled Senate would uphold it. The publicly contentious debt-ceiling debate and resolution led to an unsurprising credit rating downgrade from Standard and Poor’s, Paulsen said, since the Aug. 2 budget reductions didn’t go far enough. A week before the vote, Paulsen said S&P came to legislative leadership and said if the reductions are less than $3 trillion to $4 trillion, they would likely see a negative impact on the government’s ratPAULSEN: TO PAGE 13A

Paulsen FROM PAGE 10A ing. “S&P wasn’t a surprise,” Paulsen said. Something else voters can keep an eye on this fall is discussion about having a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, requiring that the federal budget be balanced. There are a lot of different versions of amendment, Paulsen said, and it does make a difference what the language is. Should there be a tax prohibition? Can it
be used during time of war? “Watch for that debate to unfold,” Paulsen said. Such an amendment would be one of the strongest reforms to “handcuff” congress to force them to change and go in a different direction, he said. Paulsen also talked about tax reform during his luncheon talk, saying cuts won’t be the only solution to debt or spending problems. The economy needs revitalizing and tax reform would help do that, he said. Paulsen is a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, which has jurisdiction over health care, economic and trade policy. It is also the chief tax-
under the current tax structure. Paulsen also serves as co-chair of the House Medical Technology Caucus. During the Tuesday luncheon, he also stressed that the Environmental Protection Agency needs revamping to make medical device approvals easier. Many innovative ideas and new technology from Minnesota and the United States are being lost to Europe, which has a quicker approval process but is as safe as the EPA’s, he said. He explained how he’s been advocating and will continue advocating reform to further innovation from Minnesotans, he said.
writing committee in the House. Hearings about tax reform have been focused on making the tax code globally competitive rather than fair and simple, and discussions among legislative leaders and party members have been productive in that area, Paulsen said. But, tax reform’s momentum will fall on the president, Paulsen said, and he said businesses seem ready for it. A couple corporations have indicated they’re okay with losing some perks from the current tax code, Paulsen said, as long as they know what to plan for 5-10 years out, since they allocate capital based on 510 year projections, which is tough to do

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to September 30th receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Arc’s Value Village welcomes volunteers age 14 and older, as individuals or in groups, who can give a few hours of their time. Volunteers are especially needed on the following dates: Monday, Sept. 19 — Starting at 9 a.m., volunteers are needed to help unload four trailers of merchandise for A Celebration of Sorts on Sept. 20, at its new location in the Education Building on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Tuesday, Sept. 20 — Volunteers are needed for all three shifts to sort through and tag piles of merchandise at the eighth annual A Celebration of Sorts, a joint public volunteer event with the United Way Caring Connection. Shifts are from 9 a.m. to noon, 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Volunteers are especially needed for the morning and evening shifts. A Celebration of Sorts offers music, entertainment and refreshments and takes place at its new location in the Education Building at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Thursday, Sept. 22 — Stock the Bootique and get a sneak peek at costumes and decorations. Volunteers are needed at all four stores in Brooklyn Center, New Hope, Richfield and Saint Paul to get ready for the official kick-off of Halloween Bootique at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. INVESTING IN INFRASTRUCTURE IS SOMETHING WE SIMPLY HAVE TO DO. But with soaring deficits we have to do it right. Rep. Erik Paulsen wants to change course — changing the way we budget infrastructure projects by taking the complete life-cycle costs into account and building to last. It can save hundreds of millions of dollars, and it puts taxpayers first.

The Churches of Christ are part of a unity and “back to the Bible” movement that has roots in the Reformation. This movement gained momentum in the United States in the early 1800s. It is often referred to as the “Restoration Movement” because of the desire to restore qualities and characteristics of the church described in the New Testament. Since the focus of the early church was on the life, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and coming of Jesus Christ; it is ours as well.

Although the aquarium was willing to donate it to a school, there are costs associated with transporting and hanging it inside a school, Atkins noted. Area businesses donated the services necessary to complete the task last week, he said. If and when the shark will have a name in its new home is to be determined. At the mall, it was known around the aquarium by a simple name, Atkins said. “We called it ‘Big Blue,’ I guess.”

ISD 191 offering EnglishSpanish language preschool Optional class run through Lakeville Community Education BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS A new preschool option to be offered this fall is aimed at addressing the needs of two groups of students and families — those hoping to learn English, those hoping to learn Spanish. The dual-language preschool class will be much like existing classes offered through District 191 Community Education, except instruction, labels in the room and other locations, wherever necessary, will be presented in both English and Spanish. Rebecca Richardson, who will be the lead teacher in the class this fall, said the initial plan involved Spanish immersion, meaning a Spanish-only classroom designed just for teaching English-speaking children. However, the need to connect more with Spanish-speaking families and the oppor-
tunity to provide a learning experience that benefitted more than one group provided the impetus for changing to dual-language. “We were thinking of a more effective way for the children to learn a language,” Richardson said. “It is different from an immersion classroom because we are both supporting English-language learning as well as Spanish-language learning.” Richardson added that the key difference between immersion instruction and dual-language rests with supporting both forms of language learning. “That’s the key difference,” she added, “and that’s why we opted for dual-language.” Richardson commented on what she referred to as positive feedback from families, with children in Spanish immersion classes, about implementing the dual-language class. “They were all very excited about their child being exposed to another language,” Richardson said. “Watching the demoDUAL: TO NEXT PAGE

Dual FROM PREVIOUS PAGE graphics of the people who are using community education services and classes, there is a large Spanish-speaking population that takes part, and we wanted to meet their needs and we wanted to meet the needs of the families with English-speaking children ‌ who would like to learn Spanish. With regard to the changing demographics, Minnesota has experienced much growth in its Hispanic population during the past 10 years. According to 2010 U.S. Census results, the Hispanic population in the state has increased nearly 75 percent, with Hispanics now representing 4.7 percent of the state’s population. In Dakota County, that percentage is even higher. Also according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population percentage is at 6 percent, up 1.3 percent from 2000. In real numbers, the Hispanic population increased
from 10,459 to 23,966 from 2000 to 2010. Richardson took a moment to comment on how she believes the dual-language class will benefit all interested parties. “Learning from their peers is the most effective way to reinforce what an adult would want a child to learn and to see that reinforced throughout their peers, she said. “The ideal model would be half Spanish-speaking students, half English-speaking students and creating relationships at that age, removing the barriers that can sometimes get in place when children are not able to communicate one another very effectively. Setty Attias, owner of Espanol Sin Limites, a small, private Spanish language teaching company in Burnsville, supports the concept, citing the benefits as she sees them. “I think it’s very beneficial to expose children to a second language and a different culture, Attias said, basing this on nearly 30 years of teaching experience in both Mexico and the United States. “I think that helps them in the language way, but also to accept differences in culture, she added.
A native Spanish-speaker herself, Attias earned a degree in elementary education and has worked in private and public schools teaching Spanish, among other subjects. For the past 10 years, Attias has been teaching Spanish as part of her business, located at 14581 Grand Ave. S., Ste. 103-104, in Burnsville. Attias further commented on what she believes are the long-term benefits of learning both languages. “When I have taught middle school students who have never studied another language, I tell them some of the rules of language that are different from English, she said. “Understanding the structure of language has helped them understand their own language. Attias added that, based on her experience as one arriving in the U.S. about 10 years ago, learning English helps people in the workforce. “Nowadays, being bilingual helps you get a job, she said. The class will be a full-day program, meeting from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Diamondhead Education Center, 200 W. Burnsville Parkway. Info: 952-707-4150.

Honoring the anniversary of a tragedy hard to forget BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS It has been ten years. Whether that’s hard or easy to believe, there’s a memorial that will help Minnesotans remember Sept. 11 and the lives impacted, lost, saved and risked to help others that day. The Hennepin County Fire Chief ’s Association is hosting a large, familyfriendly memorial on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and the attempted attack with Flight 93, heroically thwarted over Pennsylvania. The event, free to the public, is scheduled 12-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Grace Church, 9301 Eden Prairie Road, Eden Prairie, and will include a ceremony in which Gov. Mark Dayton may speak, among several others. “To us, in the fire service, it really points to what the American fire service really optimizes,” which is the role and

It was a split decision for Bloomington’s two high school football teams in their season openers Sept. 1. Jefferson snapped a nine-game losing streak over two seasons with a hardfought 20-18 victory over host Burnsville. The Jaguars will seek a second straight win against Prior Lake at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Bloomington Stadium. The Lakers lost 47-20 to Wayzata in their opener last week. Kennedy lost 28-6 to Rosemount in its opening game at Bloomington Stadium. The Eagles will travel to Eden Prairie for a 7 p.m. non-conference game Friday. EP opened with a 24-7 triumph over Champlin Park.

Heather Bachman The Kennedy volleyball player provided 10 kills, 12 digs and 2.5 blocks as the Eagles defeated Holy Angels in a five-set non-conference match Aug. 25. Bachman is a senior middle hitter.

Jaguar comeback
Isabel Nutting
Jefferson’s first win was a come-frombehind effort. Burnsville led 6-0 in the first quarter on a 15-yard scoring pass. After a scoreless second quarter, the Blaze recovered a fumble and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Jefferson’s Noah Larson blocked the extra point. However, Jefferson scored the next three touchdowns. Ryan Gilmer caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tony Robinson. Tim Larson kicked the extra point. Later in the third quarter, Phil Oppong recovered a fumbled snap on a punt in the end zone for another Jaguar TD. Larson’s kick put Jefferson ahead for good (13-12). Trey Blanchard’s 15-yard touchdown run and Larson’s kick gave Jefferson a 20-12 lead in the fourth quarter.
Nutting scored a hat trick as the Jefferson girls soccer team defeated Chanhassen 5-0 in a non-conference game Aug. 27.
Hannah Werth The Jefferson girls soccer captain scored the Jaguars’ goal in a 2-1 loss to Anoka Aug. 25 in non-conference competition. Her goal tied the game 1-1 before Anoka scored the winning goal in the final two minutes.

Kennedy girls tennis team relies on eight returning letter winners BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eight returning letter-winners are expected to lead the Kennedy High School girls tennis program this fall. Senior co-captains Tanisha Duwearatchi and Valya Johnson are two veteran players for the Eagles. That duo is playing first doubles. Senior Gina Shuck and junior Alina Nguyen are back and teamed at second doubles. Other Kennedy veterans are senior Shelby Spurlin, senior Anna Zhao, junior Vy Duong and sophomore Brenna Carberry. Two additions to the Eagle varsity lineup are senior twin sisters Alex and Anna Cole. “Our South Suburban Conference is a bruising one,” said Kennedy head coach Ryan Keith. “But we should be competitive and keep improving as the season progresses.” Kennedy showed its improvement from a year ago during a doubles tour-

Simley defeated Kennedy 6-1 in a nonconference dual meet Aug. 23. Shuck and Nguyen won at second doubles. Rosemount blanked Kennedy 7-0 in the South Suburban opener Aug. 25. Kennedy lost a close 4-3 dual meet against St. Louis Park Aug. 26. The Eagles won all three doubles matches. Duwearatchi and Johnson teamed for a win at first doubles against St. Louis Park. The second doubles team of Shuck and Nguyen also won. The Cole twins provided another point at third doubles. Kennedy will host Burnsville at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8. The Eagles travel to Chaska for a 3:30 p.m. match Friday, Sept. 9. Kennedy remains on the road to play Eagan at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13.
There is a youth movement underway in the Bloomington Jefferson girls tennis program. The Jefferson varsity roster consists of three seniors, five juniors, two sophomores and a ninth-grader. “I am optimistic about the future of our program,” said Jefferson head coach Lynn Larson. We don’t have many seniors but do have a great group of players who will continue to improve. “And we should receive help from 10 middle-school players in the near future.” Jefferson’s senior co-captains are Erin Spong and Emily Gavel. They will be the Jaguars’ first doubles team. Jefferson’s top three singles players are junior Kelsey Barnes, junior Kim Drangeid and ninth-grader Reem
Ghanem. Junior Jana Vaudreuil and Morgan Hinton will form Jefferson’s second doubles team. Other Jefferson varsity candidates are senior Erin Campbell, junior Emily Eck, sophomore Molly Deering and sophomore Sae Hymn Oh. Jefferson opened its season with a second-place finish in a doubles tournament Aug. 27 in Richfield. Burnsville placed first ahead of Jefferson, Holy Angels and Richfield. Jefferson lost 7-0 to South St. Paul in a non-conference match Aug. 23. The Jaguars play Eagan at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, on the Jefferson High School courts. Jefferson travels to Chaska for a 3:30 p.m. match Monday, Sept. 12, and remains on the road to battle Eastview at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13. Jefferson plays at Park of Cottage Grove at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14.

If the shoe fits, Otto will toss it Women’s horseshoe pitcher excels in state and world competition BY GREG KLEVEN SUN NEWSPAPERS Sara Otto started tossing horseshoes during a weekend retreat at a Brainerd-area resort five years ago. Soon the Minnetonka resident decided to join the Bloomington Horseshoe Club in 2006 and hasn’t stopped throwing ringers since. Otto has steadily moved up the class ladder in state and national competition. Otto finished fifth in the Women’s Class C Division at the 2011 World Tournament in Monroe, La., in July. “I started slowly in the
tournament and began to turn things around the second day when I had a 4-1 record,” said Otto. “I didn’t get a trophy this year but did average 48.17 percent ringers in the tournament.” Otto moved up one class this year after winning the World Women’s Class D title in 2010 with a 14-1 record and 53 ringer percentage in the tournament held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Otto got her first taste of world competition by placing sixth in the Women’s Class J Division in 2007. That tournament was conducted in Ardmore, Okla. “I actually began pitching horseshoes in junior high through our summer recreation program in Wadena, where I grew up,” said Otto. “I played in league as well as state tournaments. “Then 15 years later, I picked up the sport again while our group stumbled

upon the horseshoe courts at a Brainerd resort. My girlfriends and I decided to join a league and thought the Bloomington Horseshoe Club would be centrally located. So, we became members.” Otto learned quickly that tossing ringers consistently required hard work and plenty of practice. She established a six-percent ringer average in 2006 and that average doubled the next year in 2007. In 2008, Otto improved her league ringer percentage to 31.65 and competed in five local tournaments winning four and placing third in the other. She won the state title in her class that year. Ringers started coming more frequently for Otto in 2009 as she won the World Class G title in Springfield, Ill., with a 15-0 record while throwing 52.33 percent ringers. HORSESHOES: TO NEXT PAGE

Kennedy falls to Irish Kennedy fell victim to a three-touchdown effort by Rosemount’s Logan Lindberg during a 28-6 loss to the Irish Sept. 1. Lindberg caught touchdown passes of 19 and 13 yards and returned a punt for an 80-yard touchdown. Kennedy fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter on a Rosemount 3-yard scoring run. Otto is proud of her association with the Bloomington Horseshoe Club, formed 30 years ago and home of many state and world champions including Dale Lipovsky and his father Lenny. Bloomington’s club is one of approximately 30 leagues across Minnesota. Interested pitchers can visit minnesotahorseshoes.com for information on local leagues. “I’m always amazed by how many people have played horseshoes at family picnics or in the backyard,” said Otto. “They are always surprised to hear that it is an organized sport on a state, national and international level.” Outside of horseshoes, Otto is Vice President of Development at the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota, located in Bloomington. 19-yard scoring pass. But Kennedy put together a 12-play, 78-yard scoring drive culminated by a 1yard run by senior running back Lexis Jones. The kick failed leaving the Eagles down 14-6 at halftime. One key play on the Eagles’ lone scoring drive was a 41-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Travon Hearns to junior wide receiver Ricky Clifton. Rosemount broke the game open in the third quarter with its 80-yard punt return for a TD and a 13-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter. “We did well defensively against the run but had a few breakdowns on coverage,” said Kennedy coach Dick Weinberger. “We struggled offensively and made too many mental mistakes like blocking the wrong guy and running incorrect pass routes. “We need to eliminate those mistakes when we play Eden Prairie this week.” Jones led Eagle rushers with 67 yards on 21 carries. Hearns gained 56 yards on 11 rushing attempts. Clifton caught three passes for 53 yards. Senior defensive back Cullan Brown and senior defensive end Matthew McCracken had one interception each. Senior defensive lineman Teddy Sunder recovered a fumble.
