Art show honors 40 years of education BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS
Bloomington’s new home for pickleball Jerry Peterson of Plymouth reaches for the ball during an Aug. 24 game of pickleball as partner Mike Jennings of Lakeville watches at Westwood Park in Bloomington. The city converted one of its existing tennis courts at the park into three smaller courts for pickleball. The game is similar to tennis and badminton and has an enthusiastic group that plays at 9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at the park. About 60 people gathered last week to celebrate the completion of the courts, which includes one standard tennis court that has extra lines painted to denote the pickleball court. An art show that is also a belated anniversary celebration opens today in Bloomington. “On the Training of Painters: The Atelier’s Past and Present” is actually a twovenue showcase paying homage to the history of a Minneapolis art school. The show features an exhibition of paintings and drawings at the Bloomington Center for the Arts. By mid-September the Atelier Studio Program of Fine Arts will exhibit additional works at its Minneapolis school. The joint exhibit is intended to honor the school’s founder and its 40th anniversary, albeit two years after the fact. Atelier, French for workshop, is a style of painting that is distinguished by its teacherstudent relationship, teaching fine draftsmanship and painting skills by melding formal academic training with the influence of French impressionists. The Atelier traces its lineage to 1748, and is honoring its founder Richard Lack through the exhibition. Lack founded the school in 1969 as Atelier Lack in Uptown Minneapolis. He retired in 1992, but the school continued as the Atelier Studio Program of Fine Arts, according to co-director Dale Redpath, who studied under Lack. Today the school has a full-time four-year ART: TO PAGE 17

Hennepin County looks to continue success of truancy program About 200 schools participated in program during its first year BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Pleased with the success of its initial efforts to combat truancy, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office will conduct its be@school program for a second full school year beginning this month. The program is designed to use all of the social services and legal tools available in the county to make sure students are in school, every day and on time. In its first year, 199 of the 256 schools in Hennepin County that participated in a study reported using at least some element of the be@school program. “History has shown us that if you don’t get to school, you don’t get an education,” Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said. “And if you don’t get an education, you don’t get a job. And then we are likely to see too much of you in the criminal justice
system or the social welfare system. And I don’t like either option.” The be@school program requires schools to send a letter and make phone calls to a student’s parents when unexcused absences begin piling up. At six unexcused absences, the school refers the child to the program and a parent group meeting is called with officials from the school, attorney’s office and possibly social service groups. Be@school coordinator Tamiko Thomas said the meetings were designed to be a proactive approach to the problem and teach the families about educational neglect and truancy. “It depends on each case, but mostly it’s an opportunity for them to receive support and get education on what the law says about education attendance,” she said. “Families do find the meetings to be helpful.” If more absences occur, the pressure is ratcheted up, including filing of educational neglect or truancy reports. There are various reasons why students miss school frequently, Freeman said. Barriers can include transportation
and unexcused absences. State law requires students to be in school until they are 18 – they can be officially withdrawn with parent consent if they are 16 or older. Be@school is offered to every school in Hennepin County – most schools that participate have a staff member whose duty is to be in charge of the program at the site. Thomas said it was a “more innovative approach to addressing a lack of school attendance. “It’s clarifying the expectations for families.”
problems or a lack of good clothes. Sometimes children are asked to babysit their younger siblings while their parents are at work. One of the goals of be@school is to refer families to social service agencies that can help alleviate these types of problems. Freeman said 43 percent of elementary students with six to 12 unexcused absences had no more after 90 days in the program. In a survey, 82 percent of staff members whose schools participated believed be@school was effective in cutting truancy

Recycling while on the go BY ANGIE TIMMONS GUEST COLUMNIST It’s more popular than ever for Minnesotans to recycle at home, but do you keep it going while you’re traveling or out and about? Many of us take road trips, attend family get-togethers, and go on vacation during the last few weeks of summer, and it’s important to find ways to recycle along the way. It can be surprising how much waste one person can produce when traveling, but implementing a few simple things to reduce waste and conserve resources will minimize your environmental footprint. Here are some easy things you can do to make a difference: — If possible, use public transportation while traveling,
or carpool with others who are going to the same destination. — Use electronic tickets whenever possible to avoid paper waste. — If you don’t see recycling bins at your destination, ask the person or company in charge. Hopefully, a friendly suggestion will encourage them to implement a program. — Bring a bag for your own recycling. If you’re spending the day traveling or staying somewhere you know won’t provide recycling opportunities, pack a bag for your recyclable items and recycle them when you get home. — Keep an eye out for recycling bins along your route. Gas stations, rest areas and parks often have a place you can deposit your recycling rather than hauling it all the way
home. — As you shop for groceries and supplies for your trip, look for environmentally-friendly packaging and pack items in reusable containers. — If you’re hosting a gettogether away from home, be sure to put out paper bags or containers for recycling near the trash bin and label them clearly. Hopefully, your guests will follow your lead and do the sorting for you. — Choose or encourage the use of reusable or recyclable materials (cups, plates, utensils, etc.) in all your activities. With a little forethought, it’s easy to make it a habit to recycle on the go and the results are worth it to protect the environment. Think about what you can do to help while enjoying your summer celebrations,
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Back pay has been donated to Cornerstone To the editor: During the government shutdown, I stood in solidarity with laidoff state workers and did not receive my paycheck. Once the shutdown was completed, I was informed by the House Budget Office that they could not donate my back pay, and I had to take my check and then donate it to a worthy cause, which is exactly what I’ve done. I wanted my salary from the shutdown to be useful in the communities I represent. Domestic abuse prevention programs were dealt a massive cut by the majority party in the legislature. I donated to Cornerstone of Bloomington to try to alleviate some of the budgetary pressure they felt. Cornerstone is a domestic abuse pre-
vention program serving both my communities of Richfield and Bloomington. Cornerstone does great work for the people in the communities I have the honor of serving and I felt this was a very worthy use of my pay from the shutdown. I did this not for political purposes – in fact, it was done long before the recent outrage over legislative back pay – but to do the right thing, and to benefit our community. I find the journalism done on this story to be reprehensible. Few media outlets bothered to contact me and others choose to ignore my donation in an effort to portray me as a “typical politician.” I always have done my best to serve my constituents honorably, and this situation is no different. Linda Slocum Richfield Slocum is the Minnesota House District 63B representative.

Noise, access among concerns for Black Dog repowering project State holds public input meeting in Burnsville BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS A proposal by Xcel Energy to repower two coal-burning units into naturalgas units raised concerns for some residents who live near the facility. Around 60 community residents attended a public input meeting Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Burnsville City Hall to provide input and ask questions with regard to a plan by Xcel Energy to repower its Black Dog plant. The purpose of the meeting at this point in the process was to allow Minnesota Department of Commerce Energy Facility Permitting and Xcel officials to give brief presentations that summarized the project and to allow community residents to voice concerns, ask questions and provide input that will be considered in the scope of an environmental assessment. The repowering project would consist of retiring the last two coal-burning units at Black Dog, units 3 and 4, and replacing the units with naturalgas burning units. Units 1 and 2 underwent the conversion to a natural gas combined-cycle operation nearly 10 years ago. The meeting was just one step in a lengthy permitting process. At this point in the process, Xcel is seeking approval of a certificate of need and an application for a site and route permit. Among the concerns voiced by some in attendance included the noise during construction, access to the location, and the entire project’s timeline. James Zyduck, Black Dog plant director, reiterated what the project aims to do, touching on some benefits to the community. “We have several air emission improvements as a result of the conversion,” he said, adding that the repowering project would also eliminate about 8,300 rail cars delivering coal each year. Soon after the presentations, com-
munity members had the opportunity to ask the officials questions, as well as voice concerns. Burnsville resident Deborah Johnson said she resides about a quarter mile away from the plant with her husband, Marv, and she inquired about the noise during construction. “It’s in our backyard,” she said, emphasizing how important the issue is to her and her husband. Zyduck responded to Johnson’s question by citing the success of a similar project conducted on the High Bridge plant in St. Paul. “The easiest way to answer that question is to show you what we are doing,” Zyduck said. “It was very successful. We worked with the neighborhoods.” Zyduck continued by mentioning limitations that were set with regard to trucking and construction to mitigate noise. More emphatically, Zyduck said. “It’s really hard for me to quantify until you can see it and feel it.” Energy Facility Permitting State Permitting Manager Scott Ek also spoke to the issue of noise. “I’m sure during construction you are going to hear an increase in noise,” he said. “That will end when the construction is complete.” He added that one would not necessarily hear all of the construction, referencing the different types of construction projects that would not contribute greatly to the noise. “I believe the neighborhoods in the area are far enough removed,” Ek said. Regarding the access issue, one woman in attendance said she read that the existing roads were not capable of handling the increased traffic loads during the construction period. Zyduck acknowledged that access is already an issue, whether or not the plant is repowered. “The 1,400 trucks currently is creating an issue,” he said. “It has nothing to do with the expansion.” He later added, “Whether we repower or not, we have an access issue. They are issues for current operations.

We’re already engaging with the city of Burnsville.” According to a media advisory about the public meeting, a certificate of need application was filed by Xcel March 15 and was accepted as complete by the commission May 25. A site and route permit application was filed May 19 and was accepted as complete June 24. “The certificate of need and site and route permit applications will be reviewed jointly as part of the review
process and an environmental assessment will be prepared by the office of Energy Facility Permitting,” the advisory read. The EFP will continue to accept written comments regarding the scope of the environmental assessment until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6. They may be submitted by way of the commission’s EFP website, online at http://bit.ly/oW3DQA. Sept. 6 marks the end of the public comment period.

A 50-year-old Bloomington man was arrested Aug. 22 on suspicion of fraud stemming from incidents a month earlier involving a credit card. The credit card’s owner had used the card to make a $10 gas purchase at Holiday, 7911 Nicollet Ave. S., on July 23 but was uncertain as to how the sus-

An investigator questioned the owner of the Mustang, a 44-year-old Bloomington woman, who said she knew the man as “Frank,” had met him at a bar and didn’t know much about him, or about the credit card he used to make the gas purchase for her car. The woman was identified through the surveillance video as the person in the passenger’s seat of her

The card was used to purchase $100 worth of gas at the same Holiday store that day, as well as a $59.70 gas purchase at the Holiday store at 50 W. 98th St., and a $149 saw from Home Depot, 400 W. 79th St., Stehlik said. The gas purchase payments were made at the pump and the saw purchase was made using a self-checkout lane at Home Depot, he noted. Surveillance video from the stores showed a man purchasing gas for a pickup truck at the Nicollet Avenue Holiday and a similar male making the gas purchase for a white Ford

When hitting plastic bottles with gold clubs lost its appeal, two Bloomington teens turned their attention to spray paint and the playground equipment at a Bloomington park. Now they face misdemeanor charges for vandalism at Kelly Park. The duo was arrested Aug. 20 shortly after they fled the scene, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. At approximately 10:30 p.m. a patrol officer was checking the park, at 185 E. 102nd St., on foot for after hours activity. The park closes at 10 p.m. and there have been recent after-hours incidents in the park, Stehlik noted. The officer heard talking and laughing near the playground area as he approached and called for backup, but the three individuals he observed entered a vehicle and left the park before additional officers arrived, Stehlik explained. The officer was able to provide a vehicle description, resulting in a traffic stop near the park by a second patrol officer. Two cans of spray paint,
black and green, were found inside the car. The information was relayed to the officer at Kelly Park, who found green and black graffiti on playground equipment that appeared to be fresh, Stehlik said. The suspects, an 18-year-old Bloomington man and a 17-year-old Bloomington boy, said they started spray painting graffiti to entertain themselves, according to Stehlik. A female with them did not participate, they told police. The parents of the teens took the duo back to the park and cleaned the playground equipment. City employees verified that there were no traces of graffiti left at the park, Stehlik noted.

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE vehicle during the 98th Street transaction, Stehlik said. The registered owner of the pickup truck that was identified at the Nicollet Avenue location, however, was the same person named as the woman’s boyfriend during a 2010 domestic incident at her residence. The woman later acknowledged that
A 21-year-old Ham Lake man was arrested following a domestic incident at a Bloomington motel. The man was arrested Aug. 20 at Microtel Inn and Suites, 801 E. 78th St., after police responded to a report of a female yelling for help inside a motel room, Stehlik said. Officers arrived at the room and could hear a woman “frantically
yelling for help,” but their knocks on the door went unanswered, according to Stehlik. Officers kicked the door in to find the suspect on top of the woman, between the bed and the wall. It appeared her eye was bleeding and the man ignored orders to get off of her, Stehlik said. Police struck the man with an impact weapon, which did not appear to faze him. He eventually stood up and charged an officer. He was shot with a Taser gun but continued to resist arrest. The woman told police

“he’s on acid and he’s a marine,” Stehlik noted. The man was eventually subdued and arrested on suspicion of domestic strangulation, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. The woman said that they duo had attended a marine’s wedding and that they had both dropped acid after returning to their motel room.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. A chance to learn fresh, easy and cheap-to-make meals can be achieved easier now thanks to a “Groupon” deal run through the Southshore Community Center in Shorewood and Groupon. Students were taught how to make fresh and easy meals with Saga Hill Cooking School chef Marianne Miller. The Southshore Center sold 1,100 Groupons for the class. “The results were dramatic,” said Southshore Center executive director Kristi Anderson. “We almost panicked because that means we need to schedule 50 cooking classes with 20 students in each class.” The first day 250 Groupons were sold, and Anderson said they had no idea how big the response was going to be. Students learned how to make spring rolls and risotto among other meals during the Aug. 25 class.
“I’m really excited to learn about how to make risotto,” said Reed Daniels from Eden Prairie. “Not to mention this will help me learn the basics for cooking so I won’t have to treat myself to Mac’n Cheese and frozen pizzas.” Candy Trapp from Plymouth said she wouldn’t have heard about the class or the center if it weren’t for the Groupon. The first round sent 33,000 emails to people that had interests in food and restaurants. So pleased with the results, Anderson says Groupon wants to do another special, and plans to send 400,000 emails to people around the metro area. The way Groupon works is through various social media and email, people can sign up for the daily deals and present the printed coupon or present it with a mobile device at the business. Edina teen can’t yet vote, but has political voice Gabe Aderhold, 17, calls out presidential candidates in Iowa BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS An Edina teen not yet old enough to vote recently made political headlines. Reporters and bloggers across the country wrote about 17-year-old Gabe
Aderhold after he confronted Republican presidential candidates last month at the Iowa State Fair. Gabe addressed former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty Friday, Aug. 12, while he spoke at the Des Moines Register’s soapbox venue. “I asked him directly where his courage to stand was for GLBT [gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender] Americans,” said Gabe, who is gay. When U.S. Congresswoman Michele
Bachman didn’t take questions at the same event later that day, he shouted, “Shame on you.” The Edina High School senior said his goal wasn’t to make a scene. He wants lawmakers to publicly address GLBT issues such as marriage equality and bullying and isn’t afraid to ask, he said. “Many of these people can’t speak out because their community will reject them. I live in a fantastic community where I will be supported,” Gabe said, noting he’s proud of Edina Public Schools for its comprehensive bullying policy and inclusion of the GLBT community. His mom Audrey Kingstrom said when she allowed Gabe to travel to the fair with a fellow classmate, she thought they were going for the experience alone. “I didn’t think he was going to stand up, although I’m not surprised,” Kingstrom said. “I’m really proud of him for taking a stand.” Gabe comes from a family with aboveaverage political involvement, she said. Both parents, including dad Bob Aderhold, have lobbied legislators at the state Capitol on issues from transportation to gun control. Gabe tagged along when they door-knocked for DemocraticFarmer-Labor candidates over the years. But Gabe said his parents never forced him to be active – his older brother didn’t take an interest – nor did he adopt their views without question. “More recently I’ve been dragging them out,” Gabe said. Last year he was an intern for Matt Etenza’s gubernatorial campaign, and also volunteered for Gov. Mark Dayton’s campaign. Since the Minnesota Legislature voted to put a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the ballot in 2012, he’s ramped up his involvement. This month he will join the Edina

(Photo by Katie Mintz • Sun Newspapers) Human Rights and Relations Commission as a student member, and was also named a state director of the Minnesota Young DFL. He recently started a Facebook group, Move Edina Forward, aimed at electing moderate leaders to represent Edina. Even though he can’t yet vote, he said he could still make a difference. “I think being vocal, working on campaigns or volunteering will gather more votes than your one vote,” Gabe said. He will be 18 in 2012. He plans to attend precinct caucuses and hopes to be a delegate to the state convention. He said he might even run for office himself some day. In the more immediate future, Gabe said Thursday, Aug. 25, he would attend the Minnesota State Fair before heading back to high school, where he’s a choir and speech team member. “I may stop by the GOP booth for a conversation,” Gabe said.

Art FROM PAGE 1 program and has part-time students who take evening classes at the school, Redpath explained. “It has really been a hub for the realist movement in the country,” she said. Pieces by former graduates and Lack will be on display, as well as Lack’s educational predecessors, William McGregor Paxton and R.H. Ives Gammell. Works of Paxton, who died in 1941, are difficult to obtain, but the Atelier was able to obtain one piece on loan for the exhibition, according to Redpath. Approximately 80 artists will be represented by the more than 125 paintings and drawings in the exhibition. Although it was envisioned as an anniversary show in 2009, collecting artwork and compiling historical information about the school was a slow process that took longer than planned, she noted. In addition to showcasing artwork, the exhibition will illustrate the specific steps taken by Atelier artists when rendering their realistic drawings and paintings. A catalog commemorating the exhi-
bition’s artwork and detailing the Atelier’s history will be available for purchase at both exhibition locations, Redpath said. An opening reception at the Bloomington Center for the Arts is 6-8 p.m. tonight, Sept. 1, at 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road. The second opening at the Atelier is 69 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at 1681 E. Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis. Redpath and Co-director Cyd Wicker will speak 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Bloomington Center for the Arts. University of Minnesota Professor Gabriel Weisberg, an author of books about traditional painters and an essay included in the exhibition catalog, will discuss “Mentoring Tradition: The Art Studio and its Continuing Importance” 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Bloomington Center for the Arts. The exhibition runs at both locations through Oct. 14. The Bloomington Center for the Arts exhibition is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 1-10 p.m. Sundays. The Atelier exhibition is open 1-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Additional exhibition information is available online at xr.com/atelier.

Edythe L. Pizzala Edythe L. Pizzala, died at Hillcrest of Wayzata, Wayzata, Minn. on August 22, 2011 – four years after the death of her beloved and handsome husband of 65 years, George E. Pizzala. A resident of Bloomington, Minn. for more than 53 years, Edythe was born August 12, 1923 in Fresno, Calif. to George and Anna Eurich. Edythe fondly remembered her early years growing up on an orchard farm with her 22 siblings and half-siblings. She graduated Roosevelt High School, Fresno, Calif. in 1940. Edythe had a beautiful singing voice and, along with her sisters, performed live and on the radio on many occasions. Edythe met her husband George in 1942 and it was love at first sight. They married 3 days later in Reno, Nevada. Thereafter, Edythe lived the life of an Army wife, following George to many duty stations around the world, including Japan and Europe. While stationed in Germany, Edythe organized the first Boy Scout Troop there for American military families, as well as for her own two young sons at the time, Dennis and Keith. Edythe and George settled in Bloomington, Minn. in the late 50s. In 1964, Edythe joined the Hennepin County Welfare Dept. as a Home Management Counselor. In this capacity, she taught home management skills – such as budgeting, child care, home maintenance and nutrition – to low income mothers. Edythe thrived in this role for 20 years and was recognized by the then State of Minnesota Governor for her succcessful pilot programs dealing with young unwed mothers. After retiring from the Welfare Dept. in 1985, Edythe started her own business called PIZZAZ, a consulting company that taught seniors transitional skills needed for successful retirement. Edythe had a unique flair and artistic eye, which were expressed in many creative outlets throughout her life. She became a talented watercolor and oil painter. She designed beautiful rooms, gardens and floral arrangements. In her 70s, she started Edie's Interior & Floral Design, selling her paintings and elaborate silk flower arrangements and wreaths to local galleries and businesses. She later taught painting classes for friends and neighbors. Edythe was very outgoing and made lifelong friendships with people of all ages with whom she shared her love of gardening, cooking, antiques, music, and singing. An adventurous spirit, she was always eager to learn new hobbies and skills, whether it be tai chi, calligraphy, or making flavored olive oils and vinegars. Edythe is survived by her son, Keith (Jody), daughter, Carolynn Sherby (Jim); grandchildren, Tina Floersch, Lisa Mogler, Nicolas Pizzala, and Brielle Pizzala; and great-grand- children, Sarina, Ashley, Antonio, Dominic and Adrianna. Another son, Dennis, preceded her in death in 1993. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be held at Washburn- McReavy Dawn Valley, 9940 Bush Lake Rd., Bloomington, MN, Thursday, Sept. 8, 4-6 PM. Memorials to www.alzheimers.org. Changes coming at Richfield Historical Society Center to feature new exhibits, diverse offerings BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS Changes are in the future for the Richfield Historical Society. Since Jodi Larson was hired as the Richfield Historical Society director in January 2011, she has been planning big changes to the exhibits and their interpretations by visitors to the history center. “My ideas are to be able to be more things to more people,” Larson said. The first major change will emphasize the center’s desire to become more accessible with more diverse offerings, according to Larson. Effective immediately, the Richfield History Center and Museum will be open noon to 8 p.m. every Wed., and noon to 4 p.m. every Sat. “These new hours gives much more availability for people with all types of schedules,” Larson said. For more diverse offerings, the main gallery is set to release a new exhibit called, “Richfield House and Home.”
DeWayne Grant August 27, 2007 Honey! It has been 4 years, still hurting, still sad. Nothing is the same since you left me. The hurt in my heart never goes away. You were my strength, you held my hand guiding me through my darkest hours. You taught me what love really is and showed me how to be independent. You were my husband, my love, my strength and my best friend. The Happiness Day was when I married you, the saddest day was when I buried you. You are and always will be “the Love of My Life.” Watch over me My Darling. Loving and missing you each and every day, Your Wife Helen (your Greek) P.S. Kiss and hug our daughter Monica and my sisters Louise and Kathy for me. I can imagine the fun times all of you are having together.
Jodi Larson, the Richfield Historical Society Director, demonstrates one of the many activities in the new exhibit at the Richfield History center and Museum. The new exhibit, Richfield House and Home, will have a Grand Opening from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 6901 Lyndale Ave. S., Richfield. The event will be free for the whole community. (Photo by Billie Jo Rassat • Sun Newspapers) Free to the public, the Richfield History Center will hold a Grand Opening of the new exhibit from 7-10 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 10. The exhibit will feature many hands on activities such as a chance to draw your house and place it on a refrigerator, write a complaint about your house and clip it to a clothes line for an activity called “Air Your Dirty Laundry,” or even send your home a Valentine of the thing you love most about your house. The main attraction will be playing with the interactive house models, that feature three different home-made model homes that you can add doors, windows, room extensions or chimneys to make the home of your dreams. “The models are like a Mr. Potato Head with their bucket of parts,” Larson said. The new “Richfield House and Home” exhibit will allow visitors to see the differences between the popular Richfield style homes such as the Cape Cod, rambler and split-level. “If we treat the houses in Richfield like the historical objects they are, we
can tell a story,” Larson said about the unique features Richfield homes have. To become more relevant in the age of the computer, the Richfield Historical Society will also be updating their website. “Additions to the website will include online exhibits for those who cannot make it to the center,” Larson said. Larson and her team of volunteers and interns are focused on developing more child-friendly programs and more educational programs on the website, according to Larson. Combining the new with the historical, Larson hopes that she will light a fire for questions and make the Richfield Historical Society relevant in today’s culture. “We are changing the way we look at history and changing the way the community will interact with history,” Larson said. For more information about the Richfield History Center and Museum, call 612-798-6140 or visit richfieldhistory.org.

Expectations are high for the Bloomington Jefferson volleyball team. The Jaguars enter the 2011 season ranked first or second in most state polls. Jefferson is coming off a season in which it was 26-4 overall and 8-1 in the South Suburban Conference. Jefferson lost in five sets to Lakeville North in the section finals. Jaguar head coach Michelle Grice returns nine regulars from last year’s team, including six that received post-season awards. Senior middle blocker Haley Bodway is back after earning All-State, All-Metro and all-conference honors. Senior setter Emily Schadow and senior right-side hitter Ashley Peper were two other all-conference selections last fall. Senior outside hitter Kelley Wollak, senior middle blocker Eliza Zachary and senior outside hitter/libero Britney Scherber received all-conference honorable mention a year ago. Other returning regulars are junior defensive specialist/libero Cassie Santiago, senior middle blocker Ivy Shepherd and senior defensive specialist Brianna FeslerFaue. Top newcomers are ninthgrade outside hitter Molly Rudie and eighth-grade setter Sydnie Zachary. “We are looking for a section championship and state tournament appearance,” said Grice. “These girls have played

turn this program around in five years. We went from a winless season to what we hope is a state championship season.” Grice expects Lakeville North, Eagan and Lakeville South to be the Jaguars’ top challengers for the South Suburban title. Four members of Jefferson’s volleyball team will compete in college at Division I schools. Scherber is headed to Bradley on a basketball schol-
arship. Bodway will play volleyball at Western Kentucky while Eliza Zachary is headed to Georgia State. Wollak plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Bloomington Kennedy opened its volleyball season with victories over Holy Angels and Stillwater. The Eagles (2-0) will attempt to keep their winning ways going while traveling to St. Louis Park for a 7 p.m. non-conference match Thursday, Sept. 1. “We have a great group of athletes who are looking to keep pushing the boundaries of what Kennedy volleyball is capable of,” said Eagle coach Kevin Nelson. “Our strength lies in team dedication and a program that has been steadily building for years.” Six regulars return for the 2011 season. Kennedy senior tri-captains are 6foot-4 middle hitter Heather Bachman, 5-9 setter/outside hitter Alaina Brown and 6-3 middle hitter Karin Bull. Kennedy’s other veterans are 5-10 senior middle hitter Jordan Nordby, 54 senior defensive specialist Lauren St. George-Schreder and 5-7 senior outside hitter Sarah Novitzki. Justine Legut, a 5-7 junior setter/right-side hitter, is one of the top newcomers on the Eagle varsity squad. “This should be one of the most competitive Kennedy volleyball teams ever assembled,” said Nelson. “The players worked incredibly hard during the off-season to put themselves in the position to achieve their goals.” Kennedy displayed its talents during a five-set triumph over Holy Angels Aug. 25. The Eagles won the deciding set 15-7. Bachman sparked the win with 10 kills, 12 digs and 2.5 blocks. Brown contributed nine kills, 15 digs and one ace. Bull had seven kills, 2.5 blocks and two aces. Legut added 24 assists, 10 digs and four aces. St. George-Schreder had a match-high 27 digs. Kennedy prevailed 3-2 over Stillwater in another five-set match Aug. 26. The Eagles won the fifth set 15-5. Brown provided 13 kills, 23 digs and four aces. Bull chipped in with 13 kills and three blocks. Bachman and Novitzki contributed seven kills each. St. George-Schreder had 20 digs. Legut added 36 assists.
Jefferson’s football program is looking ahead, not back, after a 0-9 season last fall. Jaguar head coach Jon Leverenz said he is excited about the improvement his team has shown during the first two weeks of preseason drills. “We had a tough season last fall when we were plagued by injuries and turnovers,” said the Jaguar coach. “But we come into this season healthy. “We are really focusing on ball security and defense. We moved some athletes to that side of the ball and I think our defense will be more solid this year. We had two good weeks of practice and I am excited about our progress. We hope to move up in the standings.” Jefferson will kick off its 2011 season on the road against Burnsville at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1. The Jaguars return home to play Prior Lake at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Bloomington Stadium. Jefferson’s senior tri-captains are offensive linemen Chris Beeth (6-foot-3, 240 pounds) and Colin Garlock (6-0, 245) along with cornerback Trey Blanchard (5-10, 180). Jaguar running backs are seniors Andre Rowell (5-11, 180), Matt Schroeder (6-0, 155) and Alex Hurben (5-9, 175). Jefferson senior wide receivers are Bryan Alm (5-11, 165) and Ryan Gilmer (6-3, 175). Jefferson’s offensive line will consist of center Beeth, guards Garlock and Jon VandeWaa (6-3, 225, junior), and tackles Andy Seaberg (6-0, 208, senior) and Wyatt Ward (6-4, 218, junior). There is a three-way battle for the starting quarterback job between seniors Tony Robinson (6-1, 192) and James Fisher (6-3, 195), and junior Joe Carlson (5-10, 150). Jefferson’s probable starting defensive lineup for Burnsville will include linemen John Kamp (6-1, 205, junior) and Myal Klammer (6-2, 185, junior), cornerbacks Blanchard and Sebastian Manneh (5-8, 145, junior) and safeties Phil Oppong (6-0, 170, junior) and Jackson Miller (5-10, 165, senior).
Jefferson’s Tray Blanchard breaks loose for a gain against Kennedy last season. Blanchard rushed for 441 yards and six touchdowns last season but will begin this season on defense as a starting cornerback. Blanchard is a Jefferson senior tri-captain along with Chris Beeth and Colin Garlock. (Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer) Competing for linebacking duty are seniors Nick Shubert (5-10, 165), Blake Andruss (6-2, 205), Jake Olsonoski (6-3, 190), Josh Delander (6-3, 210) and Mitch Halladay (5-11, 180). Other linebacker candidates are juniors Nate Wakely (6-0, 190), Tyler Lundberg (6-1,

Jones should provide speed and long gains for Eagle football squad BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS One of the top running backs in the metro area returns to bolster Bloomington Kennedy’s offense in the 2011 football season. Senior Lexis Jones (5-foot-8, 200 pounds) gained more than 1,000 yards and scored eight touchdowns as a junior running back for the Eagles despite missing several games because of an injury. Kennedy coach Dick Weinberger is pleased to have Jones back as a key offensive player. “Lexis is one of the best running backs in the metro area,” said the Eagle coach. “He combines strength and speed and can gain yardage inside or outside.”
Jones will serve as one of Kennedy’s co-captains along with senior offensive guard Zack Moheban (6-1, 225). “Zach is an outstanding offensive lineman and should have a good year,” said Weingarden. “Zack and Lexis will provide good leadership.” Kennedy will count on three other returning offensive starters besides Jones and Moheban. Jason Lam (5-10, 235) is a senior center. Senior Derek McGaffey (6-2, 200) returns at tight end. Senior Nick Warren (6-0, 160) will play wide receiver. Kennedy’s returning defensive starters are senior linebacker Donte Allen (5-11, 215), senior defensive back Cullan Brown (5-10, 170), senior linebacker Jordan Stallings (5-10, 205) and senior lineman Teddy Sunder (6-2, 220). “Our biggest concern is depth because we don’t have large numbers of players out for the team,” said
Weinberger. “And we have to play smart and can’t afford mental mistakes. “But we have quality young men and we our optimistic that this group will progress throughout the season.” Kennedy opens its season at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, against Rosemount at Bloomington Stadium. “Rosemount is well-coached and always a sound team,” said Weinberger. “We should have all of our offense installed for the Rosemount game.” Weinberger looks for difficult challenges in the South Suburban Conference. “Lakeville South will be very tough to beat,” said the Kennedy coach. “Rosemount has an outstanding program and Prior Lake returns many players. “Eastview and Lakeville North should also be strong.”
