Recycle Your Holidays is a one-of-akind statewide holiday light recycling program in Minnesota. Residents can drop off their unwanted light strands at any one of more than 400 participating locations throughout the holiday season through the month of January. And this year, all three Eden Prairie Liquor locations and St. Andrew Lutheran Church are participating in the program. The program is sponsored by the Recycling Association of Minnesota and employs more than 200 individuals with developmental disabilities at vocational centers throughout the state of Minnesota. Every bulb of the light strand is dismantled by vocational center clients and then properly recycled in Minnesota.

Faith leaders, public officials talk about racial inequity BY SUE WEBBER – SUN NEWSPAPERS Faith leaders in the western suburbs convened a forum Dec. 15 at House of Hope Lutheran Church in New Hope to talk with public officials about ways of partnering to combat racial and economic inequity. The meeting included members of the Metropolitan Council, three area legislators, the state’s Human Rights Commissioner, Metropolitan Council members, the Chaska chief of police, and a school superintendent. “The suburbs once offered access to seemingly unlimited opportunities and prosperity for Minnesota families,” said a statement from Isaiah, a coalition of more than 100 congregations working together across Minnesota for racial and economic justice. But during the last seven months, faith leaders with Isaiah have learned that “the promise of the suburbs has limits,” the statement said. “In the midst of economic downturn, families that once provided services to people in need are now seeking those same services from local agencies. People of color in suburban communities find themselves cut off from opportunities in ways that mirror their experiences in larger cities.” Myron Orfield, director of the Institute on Race and Poverty at the University of Minnesota, talked about the role of the Metropolitan Council. The Twin Cities is the third whitest metro area in the U.S., he said. “We have begun to experience really

strong patterns of segregation and inequality,” said Orfield, who noted that the state now has 108 racially segregated schools. “There is strong evidence of real estate steering,” he said, with the result that people of various cultures don’t have the chance or the choice to live together. School districts, too, draw boundaries that “keep kids apart,” Orfield said. He noted that 1970-82 the Metropolitan Council operated the most progressive integrated and affordable housing program in the country. “It kept our schools racially integrated 10 to 15 years longer than they would have been,” Orfield said. “We wouldn’t have any segregated schools today if we had continued the Met Council program. We kind of lost our way, and we’re dealing with the consequences. We used to do this better than anyone. Can we work together to do fair housing? Can we face the challenges as a region, instead of cities working against each other and growing more separate?” A number of speakers talked about “signs of the times:” • Jenny Toms, who chaired the meeting and is a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Maple Grove, said she grew up in outstate southern Minnesota and thought that

side of Liberia now lives in Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park. The numbers of people of color have doubled in Maple Grove and Eden Prairie, he said. By 2030, he predicted, New Hope will be more diverse than Minneapolis. “This racial diversity is a gift,” Loecken said. “It brings new life to our communities.” But institutions have failed to embrace the change, Loecken said. “We need to do better. We can do better. We have to do better,” he said. • Maya Ignabode, a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Brooklyn Center and an Isaiah leader, said she emigrated from central Africa in 2006 “to live the American dream.” But she discovered that her family could only afford to buy a home in Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Minneapolis or St. Paul, rather than in Eden Prairie, Chanhassen or St. Michael. “Real estate agents knew our offers would not be accepted,” Ignabode said. “My English is not perfect, and I was not listened to. I came to America to sit at the table. We are part of the future of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park. If you have the dream, join us at the table. Invite us to the table.” Small group discussions were followed by a seven-member roundtable discussion, moderated by Joy Marsh Stephens, West Suburban Regional chair and a member of New Creation Church in Minneapolis. The following are excerpts from

the western suburbs were “fairly diverse.” By the time she and her husband had three children, however, she said she realized that she was living in racial isolation. “When the Osseo Schools went through boundary changes, I realized what kind of a community I was living in,” Toms said. “Kids got mixed around and a lot more racial diversity was created. The fighting and anger went far – Joel Loecken beyond a school closing, and I watched in horror. Some people moved farther west so they wouldn’t have to deal with it. A pervasive culture of racism is right below the surface.” Toms said she cannot “continue to pretend everything in my community is OK.” “We have to be willing to take the risk to talk about race,” she said. “I am taking the risk. I want to be part of the force that ends racial inequity. Which side are you on, and what are you going to do about it?” • Joel Loecken, a school teacher who attends the Parish Community of St. Joseph in New Hope, said that although the western suburbs initially were overwhelmingly Caucasian, people of color became the majority in Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park between 2000 and 2010. The largest Liberian population in the world out-

COMMUNITY NOTES EP resident honored for senior service Brenda Kopp of Eden Prairie was one of many senior companions in Hennepin County who were honored for their dedicated service to their peers. Foster grandparents were honored as well. Both services are part of the National Corporation for National and Community Service and sponsored in Minnesota by Lutheran Social Service. Senior companions, age 55 or older, help frail seniors remain at home and independent by offering companionship, grocery shopping assistance and transportation to medical appointments. Foster grandparents, also 55 or older, provide special tutoring and one-to-one mentoring to children in schools, Head Start programs and shelters in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington counties. “These services were innovations 40 years ago and are more vital and relevant than ever today as our population ages,” said John Bringewatt, senior director for Lutheran Social Service. “Through the

energy, kindness and goodwill of these older volunteers, we are able to improve quality of life for many others in our community. It’s also true that through these services, our volunteers make meaningful contributions that keep them active and healthy, too.” In 2010, more than 350 senior companions statewide provided 259,000 hours of service to 2, 214 frail elders. A majority of those receiving support were able to remain living independently and avoid costly nursing home care. There were 410 foster grandparent volunteers who provided more than 313,000 hours of mentoring and tutoring to 2,965 children, helping them to boost their reading ability and academic performance. Volunteers serve a minimum of 15 hours per week and receive a modest taxfree stipend and mileage reimbursement. The programs are supported with grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Minnesota Board on Aging, as well as support from local counties, United Way and partner organizations. Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota) offers a wide variety of human support

services relating to the basics of life – food, shelter, safety and financial, physical and emotional well-being. Rep. Winkler suggests paying back schools, bonds early Districts such as Eden Prairie, Edina impacted BY SETH ROWE – SUN NEWSPAPERS The amount some school districts need to borrow as a result of a state funding shift could decrease as a result of an unexpected budget surplus, according to one state legislator. Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL-Golden Valley) has suggested using a forecast $876 million state budget surplus toward paying off funds the state owes school districts and bondholders. As part of a budget agreement to end the partial state government shutdown this year, legislators and Gov. Mark Dayton agreed to issue more than $700 million in bonds to be repaid by future payments arising from a settlement with tobacco companies. The state delayed another $700 million in payments to school districts as part of its two-year budget. The delay came on top of a previous unpaid school funding shift of $1.4 billion. Jim Schowalter, head of the Minnesota Office of Management and Budget, announced the surplus Dec. 1. State law dictates that surplus funds go into budget reserves and the state’s cash flow account. However, Winkler said he plans to introduce a bill when the Legislature convenes in January that would direct the funds toward paying back the tobacco bonds and paying back schools. “My proposal is we try to pay back debt as quickly as we can, rather than saving that money to use in the next deficit,” Winkler said. The more than $700 million in tobacco bonds would cost hundreds of millions of dollars in interest if paid off over the scheduled 20-year time span. Meanwhile, many school districts have been preparing to borrow funds to cover the lack of money from the state.

Survey says The Association of Metropolitan School Districts released the results of a survey conducted in October detailing how much money area districts expected to borrow as a result of the budget shift. The association recently asked districts to verify results, said AMSD Executive Director Scott Croonquist. Many, if not most, districts have already finalized borrowing agreements, he added. Twenty-six of the 42 members of the association expect to borrow

money to meet their obligations, according to the association in a Nov. 30 statement. Member districts anticipate paying $3 million in interest costs on borrowing of $382 million. Among the most impacted districts, the Edina School District and Eden Prairie School District each expected to pay $300,000 in interest costs to borrow $16 million and $15 million, respectively. Some districts, meanwhile, did not anticipate having to borrow any funds. For example, Robbinsdale Area Schools and the Bloomington School District did not foresee a need to borrow any funds. Many districts landed somewhere in the middle on anticipated borrowing costs. The Minnetonka School District anticipated paying about $47,000 in interest costs to borrow more than $6 million. The Hopkins School District expected to borrow $4 million at a cost of $40,000. The St. Louis Park School District, which lies in the southern part of Winkler’s district, responded that it might have to spend $50,000 in interest costs to borrow $8 million. The St. Louis Park School District will perform a cash flow analysis at the end of this month to determine more precisely how much money it may have to borrow, said St. Louis Park Director of Business Services Sandy Salin. She said that in St. Louis Park’s case the $8 million borrowing estimate is a worst-case scenario.

Too little, too late? Salin did not express optimism that districts would benefit significantly from the surplus, noting the state law mandating the funds go to reserves and the state’s cash flow account. Additionally, she pointed out that the forecast anticipates a deficit again during the state’s next two-year budget cycle. If the Legislature did make a change so that the funds could be directed to school districts, Salin said, “That’d be nice, but of course it’s going to be only one time.” Croonquist did not anticipate the need for districts to borrow to change as a result of the expected state budget surplus. “The recently released budget forecast will not impact this as current state law requires that all of the projected surplus go toward replenishing the state cash flow account and the state budget reserve,” Croonquist said. “Thus, under current law the state will not even begin to repay the education shifts.” WINKLER: TO PAGE 10

Sending on a (belated) letter Here’s hoping for some Christmas joy, or confusion, either way Heard enough feel-good Christmas stories? If so, stop reading. This one’ll bore you. If not, well, fasten your seatbelts... A number of weeks ago, I was chatting with my father-in-law on various and sundry topics when the conversation came around to a recent possible mail theft. According to Ron, he’d found some mail open on the side of the road. Some were business mail, some were personal notes. In all

DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Managing Editor cases, the envelopes had been opened and the contents rifled through. The lack of a postmark indicated the letters had never been through the postal system. Being the upstanding citizen that he is, Ron contacted the senders of the letters and let them know what he’d found and to be aware that any checks or cash that may have been in them was gone. In the case of one birthday card, the woman who’d sent it informed him it had not contained any money, but thanked

him for letting her know. Ron did something special with that card that would likely elicit a laugh or a confused “huh?” from both the sender and the recipient. Something I’m not going to tell you yet. Kind of ruins it to hear the punch line before the end of the joke, you know? Hang tight. I took in the whole story, we chuckled for a moment and I promptly didn’t think about it again until last week. Then I found an unsent Christmas card lying in the gutter outside the Sun Newspapers office. Clearly this letter had seen better days. Frankly it looked like it’d been run over by at least a few vehicles and was thoroughly dirt-stained. The edge of the envelope had been ripped as

though someone might have been looking for money inside. “Aha,” I thought to myself, “here’s a column topic.” As is the habit of my generation, I used the Internet to find the phone number of the sender, and gave her a call. Not to be anti-climatic, but she didn’t answer. I left a message and as of this writing, I haven’t heard back. But, given the opportunity to both spread post-holiday cheer and add a little playful confusion into somebody’s day, I copied the actions of my father-in-law and tucked a dollar bill into the card, resealed it and sent it on its way. Hopefully that brightens one stranger’s day at least for a moment. Or confuses the heck out of them. Both work for me.

To resolve or not to resolve, that is the question Hi my name is Paul and I’m a resolvaholic. For years, I dutifully listed all of the things I would improve in the new year. Most of the time, my resolve lasted a matter of months, sometime weeks. I was reminded of this most clearly back in the day when my wife and I still had health club membership (you know, before that money was needed to pay the light bill). Every year Janury through March, you wanted to run screaming into the night during each workout session. The place was jammed with what we called “resolution people.” You know. You may be one of them. “I am going to get fit and I’m going to undo 15 years of gaining weight and treating my body poorly in three months … just you wait and see.” Their mistake generally was

PAUL WAHL Sun Newspapers Senior Managing Editor

in thinking that showing up would guarantee weight loss and muscle tone. They had no interest whatsoever in learning how to do anything correctly or in moderation. By the time the snow melted away, so did the resolution people and we had our health club to ourselves once again. That experience taught me a great deal about making resolutions. I haven’t made any in years. Today if I see something that needs improving, I tend to start immediately implementing a fix. Psychologists will tell you

that approach is more sustainable and results in less of a letdown once you go off the diet, stop exercising or whatever it is you have determined to do. So much of the stuff that falls into the “self-improvement” category requires a change in lifestyle more than a resolution. Of course, you could always resolve to change your lifestyle, I suppose. I have a friend who is a personal trainer. People often ask him about the Ab-Kruncher or the Tummy-Buster or whatever device is currently being promoted on television during early morning hours. I love his answer: All of them are great – if you actually use them. Millions of dollars in fitness devices are purchased each year around Jan. 1 and by March 1 they have found a resting place in the basement, out of

sight, out of mind. No one is suggesting you just stay a slob the rest of your life. But consider what motivation you are going to use to keep you moving once the power of your resolution dies. Believe me, it will die a lot quicker than you think. If you watch shows like “Biggest Loser,” you will often hear contestants say that it wasn’t until they realized they might die at age 40 and miss seeing their children grow up that finally convinces them to change their ways. That’s a lot more effective than a resolution any old day. If regaining your health is your goal, it doesn’t matter that today is five days after Jan. 1. You can start any time, any place. Find the motivation. Make the changes. Then stick to it.

Dr. Frank Ryan, famous plastic surgeon to the Hollywood stars, was featured on television and in magazines across the nation on an extensive basis. Before he died in a tragic car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway near his ranch in Malibu, Dr. Ryan fulfilled his lifelong dream of developing a line of products which would substantially improve personal appearance without plastic surgery. This product line, which includes an advanced abdominal fat reducer was previously only available to Dr. Ryan’s clients. It has now been made available to the public.

physical activity. People who were not exercising or dieting lost weight and pot belly as well as those who were exercising and dieting. The study also showed that Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer significantly increased calorie burning so that you lose weight faster or you can eat more food without gaining weight. And, the study found that the all natural Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer pill produced weight loss safely. How does Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer work? It was found in a number of research studies that a substance called Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) decreases abdominal body fat in three ways: 1.) CLA decreases abdominal body fat mass by decreasing the amount of abdominal fat that is stored after eating; 2.) CLA increases the rate of fat breakdown in abdominal fat cells; and 3.) CLA increases the rate of abdominal fat metabolism which decreases the total number of fat cells. You can think of CLA as a match that lights the fuse in abdominal fat. This fuse also increases metabolic rate that can result in more fat loss. Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer contains the effective dose of CLA. CLA interferes with an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL). LPL is an enzyme that helps store fat in the body. 2 So, by inhibiting this fat-storing enzyme LPL, CLA can help reduce the reaccumulation of fat. CLA also helps the body use its existing abdominal fat for energy, thereby increasing fat oxidation and energy expenditure. Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer also contains other super highly advanced all-natural ingredients that help reduce abdominal fat. Studies have shown that Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer ingredients increase the rate of fat metabolism, which reduces both surface and intestinal abdominal fat and helps inhibit future formation of these abdominal fats.3, 4, 5 One of these ingredients is a very high quality and

An advanced line of products produced by famous Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Ryan is now available to the public. Previously these products had only been available to Dr. Ryan’s clients which included Oscar winning Hollywood movie stars and celebrities across the nation. These products substantially improve personal appearance without plastic surgery. Dr. Ryan, perhaps the most famous Hollywood plastic surgeon in recent times, was extensively featured on television and in magazines across the nation. Dr. Ryan was also one of the first professional staff members of Endless Youth and Life which provides products and services that make celebrities look and perform many years younger than their age. On August 16, 2010 Dr. Ryan died in a tragic car accident. It was Dr. Ryan’s wishes that Endless Youth and Life would make his advanced non-surgical product line available to the public in the future. Endless Youth and Life is now complying with Dr. Ryan’s wishes. The first product being offered to the public is Dr. Ryan’s most popular non-surgical personal appearance enhancement product, Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer. Suspect in Bloomington, Edina armed robberies in custody Bloomington man suspected of committing five armed robberies in December

Tony Antoinne Benjamin, 34, of Bloomington is charged with first-degree aggravated robbery in relation to a Dec. 22 incident in Savage. Police believe he may also be responsible for armed robberies in Bloomington, Edina and Mounds View.

BY KATIE MINTZ AND MIKE HANKS SUN NEWSPAPERS A Bloomington man charged with armed robbery in Savage is considered a suspect in three Bloomington and Edina robberies in early December. Bloomington police arrested Tony Antoinne Benjamin, 34, Tuesday, Dec. 27, for probable cause armed robbery. Bloomington Deputy Chief Rick Hart said Benjamin is a suspect in five armed robberies from Dec. 5 to Dec. 23 in Bloomington, Edina, Savage and Mounds View. Benjamin was charged with one count of first-degree aggravated robbery Thursday, Dec. 29, in the Savage incident and was being held in Scott County Jail on $500,000 bail at press time. Investigations in the four cities are continuing and additional charges may be filed.

(Scott County Jail)

Edina Public Information Officer Molly Anderson confirmed Benjamin is a suspect in the Dec. 6 armed robbery outside Southdale Center in Edina. According to Edina police, at approximately 8:30 p.m. Dec. 6, a woman was robbed at gunpoint as she entered her vehicle in the parking lot. The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 40 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 200 pounds. He was wearing a dark jacket, fedora-style hat and sunglasses, and was believed to be driving a

dark four-door sedan, possibly a Honda or Acura. The Southdale incident occurred about 24 hours after a man robbed a Bloomington woman outside her home. The woman was driving home from the Bloomington Lunds Dec. 5 and noticed a vehicle was following her, according to Bloomington police. As the woman approached her residence in southwestern Bloomington, she stopped at her mailbox. The dark four-door sedan that had been following her passed

by, so she assumed it was a neighbor. As the woman exited her vehicle to retrieve her mail a man exited the vehicle and approached her aggressively, grabbing her and pushing her in the chest, according to police. Her description of the man was similar to the description in the Edina incident. Another Bloomington woman was robbed about 5:48 a.m. Dec. 8 outside of a Bloomington coffee shop. The woman pulled into the Caribou Coffee shop at the intersection of France Avenue and Old Shakopee Road and noticed a vehicle pull in behind her and park away from the building. The woman parked near the coffee shop entrance and went inside. Upon returning to her vehicle a man ran up to her, grabbed her arm, pointed a handgun at her and said, “Give me your purse if you don’t want to die,” police said. Hart also identified Benjamin as a possible suspect in the Dec. 23 incident in Mounds View and the Dec. 22 incident in Savage, for which he faces a felony charge. According to the criminal complaint filed in Scott County District Court, ROBBERIES: TO NEXT PAGE

Robberies FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Savage officers were dispatched 5:45 p.m. Dec. 22 to a silent panic alarm at Mediacom on Huntington Avenue in Savage. When officers arrived, an employee said a black male, about 5-foot-8 to 5-foot10, wearing black clothing, black gloves and a black stocking cap entered the store and ran behind the counter. She said the man pushed her to the ground and pointed a small black handgun at her. He took money from the till, her purse and cell phone and fled in a brown or tan Honda passenger car. She said the man moved so quickly she was not able to hit the panic alarm until after he left the store. Officers traced her cell phone to the area of County Road 42 and County Road 5 near Super America in Burnsville. The woman said her debit card had been used at a Super America in Burnsville. Officers checked a Dumpster at the gas station and found her purse, cell phone,

wallet, driver’s license and other documents. On Dec. 26, the Bloomington Police Department advised Savage that they identified Benjamin as a suspect in an investigation of robbery in their city. Savage officers put together a photo lineup and the Mediacom employee picked out Benjamin as the man who robbed her. Savage police asked Bloomington police to arrest Benjamin. Savage police were notified 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, that Benjamin was in custody. A search warrant was executed at his residence in Bloomington. Inside a bedroom closet officers located a black hooded sweatshirt, black jacket, black pants and a black stocking cap. A Savage officer spoke with Benjamin and advised him that the department had evidence he committed a robbery in Savage. Benjamin denied committing the robbery. When asked if he thought the officer was lying to him, Benjamin said, “I think you are doing your job. If you have anything, I am not dumb. I know what it is going to come to.”

Winkler FROM PAGE 5 However, Winkler said moving the funds could be accomplished fairly easily. “The Legislature can appropriate the money out of any account we want,” Winkler said. “This notion about it being a law that it has to go in the reserves – that’s true, but it doesn’t mean much. It’s common practice to appropriate money out of reserves or cash flow accounts.” Winkler said he has heard from people who are concerned about the school shift and who believe the state should direct a surplus to pay back schools in particular. Winkler believes bipartisan support exists among at least some legislators for such a move. Croonquist said, “I have heard rumblings but nothing definitive.” Minnesota and California are the only states to resort to such a school

funding shift, Winkler said. Minnesota shifted 40 percent of its funds for school districts while California shifted 19 percent of its school funds. “So we’re kind of an extreme outlier on this issue,” Winkler said. “That’s why I think we have to get a lot more responsible with our books.” The Legislature could take action to repay districts and the tobacco bonds after hearing a revised budget report in late February or early March, Winkler said. Because of the precedent using tobacco bonds sets and the high interest costs associated with it, Winkler said he is even more concerned about the bonds. However, he also finds the school funding shift to be a serious matter. “If it goes far enough, you’re taking teachers out of the classroom in order to pay interest to support the state and its inability to balance the budget,” Winkler said. “It’s basically the state borrowing money from school districts at the expense of teaching kids in the classroom.”

How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage.

15% OFF

ention if you m . this ad

612.839.2239 www.rightwaymn.com

1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. ECM FROM PAGE 1 and Chief Financial Officer Rod Garbe. ECM is based in Coon Rapids. American Community Newspapers II is based in Dallas, Texas. The newly acquired newspaper group will be called ECM-Sun Group LLC. The combined company will now include 500 associates and 55 publications, reaching 700,000 homes weekly. “The merger of the Sun Group into ECM Publishers continues the growth of ECM, combining two strong, wellmanaged Minnesota media organizations,” Andersen said. “This combination creates opportunity and capability to enhance services provided to both readers and advertisers, to be active partners in an extended group of Minnesota communities, and to provide many associates the chance to step up to bigger responsibilities.” “We are excited about this new opportunity to expand our footprint in the Minneapolis-St. Paul market as ECM-Sun Group, LLC,” Winkelman said. “ECM Publishers, Inc., is continuously transforming the way we operate and continues to improve our ability to meet the challenges of the changing newspaper industry. By combining our award-winning publications, strong community websites, and adding digital and social media to the mix, we will be able to communicate to our readers and deliver advertisers’ messages in a timely and effective manner.” “I am very excited about the future of our new company and the opportunities to grow and expand the business,” said Jeffrey Coolman, General Manager of the ECM-Sun Group. “Combining the strengths of both companies will create one of the best community newspaper groups in the country. It is the people who strengthen our ability to succeed.” Both ECM and the Sun Group are comprised of newspapers, shoppers and websites. ECM publishes 15 newspapers and six shoppers with total weekly circulation of 155,000 and 191,000, respectively. The Sun Group publishes 32 newspapers and two shop-

pers with total weekly circulation of 357,000 and 38,000, respectively. ECM websites attract 1 million page views a month, and Sun Group websites attract 461,000 page views per month. ECM was created in 1976 by Elmer L. Andersen, who started this newspaper company after a successful career as businessman, state legislator and Governor. The company began when Andersen bought competing weekly newspapers in Princeton and combined them into the Princeton Union-Eagle. Subsequently, ECM added a commercial web printing plant and acquired an independent delivery company that now operates as a division of ECM. In a sequence of transactions over the past 30 years, ECM acquired additional newspapers. Andersen, son of the late former governor, said ECM believes many Minnesotans agree with investor Warren Buffet who said recently, after acquiring his hometown newspaper -– the Omaha World Herald: “There are still a lot of things newspapers can do better than any other media. I’m not comfortable without an honest-to-God newspaper in my hand.” Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, a newspaper merger and acquisition firm based in Santa Fe, N.M. represented American Community Newspapers in the transaction.

FROM PAGE 3 water after his ice boat broke through the ice. Excelsior Fire Department, Wayzata Fire Department, Long Lake Fire Department and the Minnesota State Patrol also responded. The boat operator was an adult male from Deephaven, and he was not injured after making it to shore on his own. Also on Dec. 31, two men broke through the ice on Lake Riley in Eden Prairie. Lake Riley is located in Carver and Hennepin Counties. The men were not injured. A few days earlier, Dec. 27, another ice boat on Lake Minnetonka also broke through the ice. Though the boat operator was uninjured, that incident also prompted help from first responders. These recent incidents are a reminder that the ice thickness is variable due to the warm weather and freezing and thawing that has taken place over the past several weeks. On Lake Minnetonka, there are areas of open water as well. Four inches of ice is the recommended minimum thickness for walking and small group activities on ice. No ice should ever be considered safe. Parents and guardians are warned to keep children away from thin ice. Remember to keep your dog on a leash this time of year. The Sheriff ’s Office has responded to incidents involving pet owners who put themselves in jeopardy chasing after a dog that wandered onto the ice.

their comments: • “Institutional racism is alive and well; I see it daily,” Robbinsdale District 281 Superintendent Aldo Sicoli said. “Realtors are pushing white families to less diverse districts and promoting those district as best.” Even though he keeps hearing about “white flight,” Sicoli said, “They are not the only people we serve. I have seen that racist attitude in our community, and it’s not a pretty sight. We have a lot of work to do.” • Jennifer Munt, a member of the Metropolitan Council, said poverty in the region is “worse

than it’s ever been.” “I can’t wait for politicians to solve it,” she said. “We need leaders. I need more dialogue. The system forces us to fight over small pieces of pie instead of giving us a larger pie. We need more conversations and working together.” • Steve Elkins, a member of the Metropolitan Council representing Bloomington, Richfield and Edina, said it is important to preserve affordable housing. He also urged that people become more involved with their cities and city governments. • “The best social service program in the world is a job,” said Marc Carrier, chief financial officer at Summit Academy OIC in Minneapolis. “The most effective segregation is economic disparity. What we need is accounta-

15

bility from politicians.” • Partnerships are key, according to Minnesota Department of Human Rights Commission Kevin Lindsey. “Housing finance needs to be at the table; education needs to be at the table,” Lindsey said. “We think of our country as rugged individuals who don’t need anybody. We think we can do it all ourselves. You can pressure us and tell us to collaborate more.” Sicoli agreed with the need for collaboration and more accountability from politicians. And he had another idea that met with applause. “We could get rid of disparity in the school district if we blew up the system and had four or five metro school districts,” Sicoli said. “I may lose my job, but I’m behind that 100 percent.”

Larson commits to Harvard Eagle All-State running back will play football for the Crimson BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS One of the most highly recruited prep football players in the state has decided to compete in the Ivy League. Eden Prairie’s All-State senior running back Andrew Larson has committed to attend Harvard University and join the Crimson’s football program. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Larson committed to Harvard Dec. 21 and will sign a National Letter of Intent in February. “How can you turn it down when you get an offer from one of the best schools in the world?” Larson said last week. “I will get the education of a lifetime and a chance to play college football. “I will report for fall practice in midAugust. Harvard coaches plan to keep me at running back. I will be joining a

winning program just like we had at Eden Prairie.” Harvard won the Ivy League title in 2011. “I loved the campus and the city of Cambridge, Mass., when I made my official visit in December,” said Larson. “And I got along well with the Harvard coaches.” Larson, a straight-A student at EPHS, plans to major in business or economics at Harvard. Larson led Eden Prairie to a 13-3 victory over Wayzata in the Prep Bowl at the Metrodome in November. Larson finished his senior season with 1,677 yards and 27 touchdowns.
