Eden Prairie School District has lower enrollment than expected

Prying the lid off public safety

BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS After comparing the number of students who have left Eden Prairie School District to the number of students coming into the district, the district is in the red by 306 students. The district’s Chief Operating Officer Patricia Magnuson said enrollment numbers are “pretty accurate,” but they change frequently based on student and family activity. It’s not as simple as making a head count, she said, and it changes on a day-to-day basis. She described a variety of categories and methods for reporting enrollment to the state, and trying to follow the flow of kids moving in and out of the city and district is difficult. Enrollment numbers have been a concern for school board and community members since the beginning of the year, after the elementary school grade changes were given final approval and it was reported many Eden Prairie families were open enrolling to Minnetonka public schools. The school board received an update during an Oct. 11 meeting. After comparing transfers into and out of the district, the elementary schools lost 195 students compared to last October, according to the school district. The remaining 111 in the total loss came from secondary schools.

Practice rounds for roundabouts Residents get ready for 494-169 frontage road intersections

Other roundabout tips from MnDOT: - Yield to drivers already in the roundabouts. - Stay in your lane; do not change lanes. - Do not stop in the roundabout. - Avoid driving next to oversize vehicles. Info: dot.state.mn.us.

BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS

“Everybody could use this course, Dave Jordan of Bloomington said, after he and his wife Margit Jordan took a golf cart ride. Dave Jordan said the learning session may be intended for older adults, but young people should be taught how to use roundabouts properly, too. “I think it should be part of driver’s training, Margit Jordan said. One of the biggest roundabout hurdles is using two-lane roundabouts, which are not as straight forward as onelane roundabouts. MnDOT workers and educated visitors from Saturday’s open house said the driver has to know which lane to be in before entering the roundabout. To go straight or right, use the right lane; to go straight, left or to make a U-turn, use the left lane, according to MnDOT.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation played caddy for more than 80 people last weekend, helping them prepare for roundabouts that will hit the Interstate 494/Highway 169 interchange frontage roads. Four of six roundabouts in the highway interchange re-construction are expected to open up before the end of the year. For some residents, preparation included a practice round using golf carts. MnDOT used cones and street signs to create a mockup roundabout in the parking lot of Braemar Golf Course in Edina on Saturday, Oct. 15. After learning about roundabouts indoors, visitors had a chance use a golf cart to drive through the mock roundabout, getting ready for the real thing. A few of the visitors who took advantage of the golf-cart warm up round were thankful for the opportunity.

BUSINESS NOTES HCMC clinics certified as Health Care Homes Six of Hennepin County Medical Center’s primary care clinics are now certified as health care homes. A Health Care Home or a medical home is a patient and family centered way of providing coordinated primary care for all patients, especially those with chronic and complex conditions. Locally, the concept of Health Care Homes was introduced as part of Minnesota’s health reform legislation in 2008, and they are also part of a national initiative to ultimately improve the health of the population, the patient/consumer experience, and the affordability of health care. HCMC’s certified Health Care Home clinics include East Lake Street Clinic, the downtown Pediatric Clinic, Richfield Clinic, Positive Care Clinic, Aqui Para Ti, and the Coordinated Care Clinic. These clinics met the series of requirements that included continuous access, care coordination, care planning, registry and quality improvement.

Care coordinators are essential to Health Care Homes. At HCMC, both community health workers and registered nurses, depending upon the complexity of care coordination needs, perform this role. Health Care Home patients are invited to actively participate in their care, specifically in care planning and goal setting with their primary care provider and care coordinator. Hennepin County Medical Center is a nationally recognized Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center with the largest emergency department in Minnesota. The comprehensive academic medical center and public teaching hospital includes a 477-bed acute care hospital and primary care and specialty clinics located in downtown Minneapolis, primary care clinics in Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Richfield and in Minneapolis in the Whittier Neighborhood and on East Lake Street, retail clinics in Bloomington and Eden Prairie an employee clinic in the Hennepin County Government Center and a Neurology & Specialty Clinic in Chaska.

COMMUNITY NOTES Film goes from online campaign to opening Award-winning film and teen movement, “Archie’s Final Project,” opened Oct. 14 at AMC Eden Prairie Mall 18. The film opened in New York and Los Angeles to sold-out shows, lines of fans and celebrity attendance. The film has been propelled by a highly successful social media campaign and an army of teen fans called the “Archie Army.” The “Archies” have created a sensation both at the box office and online through the Facebook campaign called, “I Am an Archie.” As a result, the film has begun a nationwide rollout at AMC Independent theaters in more than 10 cities. The film stars Brooke Nevin, David Carradine, Joe Mantegna, Mariel Hemingway, Nora Dunn, and independent film newcomer Gabriel Sunday as Archie. The cities chosen were a direct result of more than 29,000 fan “demands” through an online campaign.

The film follows 17-year-old media student, Archie Williams, on his quest for personal connection after he announces that he is going to kill himself on camera. The aim of the film is to take an honest, unflinching look at this generation of media saturated, misunderstood teens. It has resonated with audiences of all ages and has provided healing for many teens and their families whose lives have been touched by suicide. “Archie’s Final Project” is being distributed by Big Air Studios and Rocket Releasing.

A message from the Eden Prairie School Board Thank you to our community and district staff for getting the school year off to a successful start. Some teachers moved to new locations, some families settled into new schools and, whether or not you were directly impacted, all of us feel the changes. The board wants to reaffirm our commitment to moving forward with goals and initiatives designed to strengthen the education of each Eden Prairie student. In that spirit, we offer the following updates.

Leadership remains strong during transition The school board recently reached a mutual separation agreement with our superintendent, Dr. Melissa Krull, and we thank her for her 28 years of service to Eden Prairie Schools. Dr. Janet Pladson has

is well respected locally and nationally for his work in school communications and public engagement. The board is well into the process to identify our next superintendent. We will be hiring a search firm by the end of November to assist in this effort. The selected search firm will be skilled at engaging community and staff in the superintendent search process.

assumed superintendent duties during the month of October. Currently the director of teaching and learning for elementary programs, Pladson is an experienced leader and licensed superintendent. We are thrilled to have her join us as interim superintendent. It is our goal to have a longterm interim superintendent announced in early November to guide the district through the 2011-2012 school year. Throughout the interim period, our outstanding executive cabinet of Patricia Magnuson, chief operating officer; Dr. Stephen West, executive director of educational services; and Tom May, executive director of human resources will continue to keep things running smoothly. We are pleased to announce that they will be joined by Bob Noyed, our new executive director of communications and community Relations, on Oct. 25. Bob

Board will continue its focus on excellence Eden Prairie continues to be nationally recognized for academic excellence. While selecting a new superintendent will be a main priority in the months ahead, we will also continue our focus on the final stages of our K-6 transformation, continued academic

Should we ticket high-rolling speeders like Switzerland? In honor of Andy Rooney recently signing off of “60 Minutes” for the last time, I’m going to make a few curmudgeon observations of my own. He’s a little more seasoned than I am, so bear with me while I clasp my hands over my desk and calmly sound off. Do you ever notice there seem to be a lot of drivers who can afford to speed? Or, maybe they just don’t get pulled over. Either way, they can risk getting a speeding ticket. Whenever I’m driving, on Highway 169 especially, those who speed past me are driving nice, expensive cars. Sure, I try to keep pace with traffic and I teeter over the speed limit like anyone else, but when I get passed, it’s by a car nicer than mine.

growth of all students while closing the gap and maintaining our district’s strong financial position. Most importantly, we are committed to including the community in all major initiatives to ensure that we reflect your values. The school board continues to stand firmly behind our mission of “Educating for success in our diverse and changing world.” We thank our community and staff for your support and look forward to working with you to build even stronger schools for Eden Prairie. The Eden Prairie School Board School board members are Carol Bomben, chair; John Estall, vice-chair; Holly Parker, clerk; Chuck Mueller, treasurer; Ranee Jacobus, director; Suzanne Kutina, director and Kim Ross, director.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR History repeats?

That’s not difficult, though. I drive a 10year-old Mazda. The parade of high school students who pulled out of the city hall parking lot after a recent city council meeting they had attended for a civics class had nicer cars than I ever had. Maybe their parents owned them. Maybe not. Regardless, money buys the fast lane, it seems. The simple equation is expensive cars means the driver has a padded

To the editor: I grew up blocks away from “Brownzeville,” a segregated part of Chicago’s south side in the 1950s. In those days housing covenants ensured white neighborhoods and schools were kept that way. Eventually housing complexes rose up, creating another kind of isolation where low paying jobs and inferior schools were the norm. My parents pulled me out of our neighborhood school to attend a private one and later moved our family out of the neighborhood. It became clear 30 years later when voluntary busing replaced mandatory busing in Los Angeles and “white flight” resulted in my son becoming one of only three white boys in a classroom of mostly Latino and

Letters FROM PREVIOUS PAGE African American children. I learned history repeats… I did not follow my parents’ example and pull my son out of his neighborhood school. Because most of the children in his class lived far away, he learned his schoolmates could not be his playmates, an imperfect solution from the standpoint of dissolving barriers that create classism, separation by color, ethnicity or economics. This Nov. 8, Eden Prairie voters have an opportunity to affect all of Eden Prarie’s children to have or not have an equal opportunity to experience Eden Prairie’s “Live, Work, Dream,” and “Live Well” mottos. The African American population in Eden Prairie is only 2.3 percent of the city’s total population. Most of these children are separated by neighborhood and school locale. Will residents of Eden Prairie elect candidates who will continue to isolate these children in order to keep them distant? If former Eden Prairie Mayor Jean Harris was alive she would not stand idly by and allow Eden Prairie to renege on the goals she helped create, included the Eden Prairie Manifesto, a document that publicly declares the city’s intent to continue development of a multicultural community. This is a critical time for Eden Prairie. Will residents vote for candidates who only believe in the dream for some people? Please vote Nov. 8 and remember your vote is for all of Eden Prairie’s children. Vicki Pellar Price Eden Prairie

‘Obamacare’ criticism is not valid To the editor: There has been criticism of the Affordable Health Care Act, commonly known as “Obamacare,” almost exclusively from Republican politicians and their beneficial supporters; these are usually issued in the context of asking for voter support. These partisan criticisms have generally taken the form of frightening the beneficiaries, especially seniors. Potential loss of coverage, a “death panel” making end-of-life decisions, and other benefit threats are described in matter of fact terms that would be cause for high concern if true and representative. However, the criticisms arguing

diminished health care with the new law are shown to be false by the overwhelming support of Obamacare by most health care provider organizations and AARP. Congressman Erik Paulsen recently mailed a document to his constituents using these same tactics, including a statement about Obamacare robbing Medicare. His objections to the new health care law are not accurate. There are many coverage improvements and few negatives for Medicare recipients in this law. In fact, the solutions that Paulsen proposes in his mailer for preserving Medicare are all ready included in Obamacare. In a hypocritical act against seniors, Paulsen voted for the Republican sponsored 2012 budget bill; the centerpiece of this bill eliminates Medicare and replaces it with a privately purchased health care insurance requirement. We should hold our politicians to a standard that keeps the American people as their target for health care improvements. And we should all speak with informed truth if we want to have debates that accomplish this goal. Fred Pollman Eden Prairie

Thank you to Eden Prairie adult league softball organizers To the editor: I would like to say thank you to Lyndell Frey (city of Eden Prairie) and Lee Ray (umpire-in-chief) for another fine adult softball season in Eden Prairie. Myself, and a few others that I know, have been participating in Eden Prairie softball since 1985 and have truly enjoyed the competitiveness and professionalism that the leagues have offered during this period. Many of the participants who play in the adult recreational leagues in Eden Prairie take things for granted and may not realize the amount of time and effort that goes into organizing and managing the different leagues that are available to them. Lyndell and his staff have done an excellent job over the years in terms of organizing, scheduling and keeping in communication with all the teams in the leagues. His ability to understand the game and listen to the players concerns has been an instrumental part in the success and growth of the Eden Prairie leagues over the past 20 years.

Confessions of a Heartburn Victim DOCTORS AGREE — a recent clinical study proves AloeCure® instantly makes heartburn, acid-reflux, constipation, gas, bloating, diarrhea and other stomach nightmares virtually VANISH!

By Ralph Burns; “Former” acid reflux sufferer Here’s My Story: I've Suffered With Acid Reflux for Almost 40 Years Now. Unless you experience it; you can’t imagine how horrible it is. Every time I ate spicy foods I would get what I called "ROT GUT". Like something was rotting in my stomach. But now I can eat anything... No matter how spicy. Even if I never could before. Let me explain… For the better part of my life; I purposely avoided a lot of foods. Especially ones with even a tiny bit of seasoning. Because if I didn't, I’d experience a burning sensation through my esophagus— like somebody poured hot lead or battery acid down my throat. Add to that, those disgusting "mini-throw ups" and I was in "indigestion hell".

What was I gonna do? Keep taking the pills, or suffer with problems that could ultimately be my demise”. Doctors put me on all sorts of antacid remedies. But nothing worked. Or if they did, it would only be for a brief period. And then boom! My nightmare would return. Sometimes, I felt like I was dying. The pain was unbearable and nothing could make it stop. But then my wife, who occasionally suffered with the same problem; gave me one of her prescription acid blockers. It was a miracle. I felt like I could live again. Because before that, I was just miserable. I wanted to kill myself. But thankfully, it worked, and worked well. I felt great, until about one year ago; when I read an FDA warning that scared the heck out of me. It went something like this… FDA WARNING! Using proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) on a long term basis, increases your risk of hip, bone and spinal fractures. That's a particular concern to me, since many acid blockers are PPI's. I've gone through two back surgeries and bilateral hip replacements. I had to ask myself, could PPI's have been responsible for my medical woes? After all...

“The Recommended Treatment for Prilosec®, Prevacid® and Other PPI's is Only 14-DAYS, I Took Them for 14 YEARS!” I was “between a rock and a hard place”. Stop using the PPIs and I'm a “dead man in the water”. It would be unbearable. I wouldn't be able to eat anything. I’d have to go on a water diet. But that FDA warning was scary. I knew I had to stop or else risk developing spinal stenosis. My mother had that. And I watched her die a horrible death. Her spine just fractured. It was the worst death. She didn't deserve that. And neither do I. I had to quit. So I stopped taking PPI's for a day or so. But my indigestion was worse than ever. I would rather take the chance of a spinal fracture than to live like that again. I tried everything. Even started using home remedies like Apple cider vinegar. But it just felt like I was pouring even more acid down my throat.

63 year old Ralph Burns enjoying a spicy-hot portion of Lobster Fra Diavolo. Just 15 minutes after taking AloeCure® I used to get what I called ‘Rot Gut’, like my stomach's rotting out!”

Then one day at dinner, a friend of mine said "why don't you try an aloe drink?" I said "aloe drink"? Jeez. That doesn't sound good at all!” The next day he brought me a case of something called AloeCure®. I was skeptical, but I was desperate! So instead of being an ingrate I decided to try it. I was shocked! AloeCure® tasted pretty good too. It has a pleasant grape flavor that I actually enjoy drinking. I decided to experiment. I stopped taking the PPI's altogether and replaced it with a daily diet of AloeCure®. Then something remarkable happened… NOTHING! Not even the slightest hint of indigestion. And here’s the best part. The next day we had Italian food — my worst enemy. But for the first time in 40 years I didn't get indigestion without relying on prescription or OTC pills and tablets. Finally, I just didn’t need them anymore! I was so thrilled; I wrote the AloeCure® company to tell them how amazing their product is. They thanked me, and asked me to tell my story... The story that changed my life. I said “Sure, but only if you send me a hefty supply of AloeCure®. I just can't live without it." But don't believe me. You have to try this stuff for yourself. I recommend AloeCure® to anyone who suffers with the same problem I did. It gives you immediate relief. You'll be grateful you did. I sure am. Should we have a tiered ticketing system like Switzerland? The Swiss fine their speeders based on how fast they were going – and their income. Last year, that law led to one Swede facing a $960,000 speeding ticket after taking his 570-horsepower Mazda for a 180 mph joyride. Allegedly, of course. Here in the United States and Minnesota, Democrats would probably like the ranked ticketing system. It’d be a redistribution of road rage. Republicans would call for a flat ticket fine. Or maybe no speeding limit at all. Get off the road, Uncle Sam – you shouldn’t be driving at this age, anyway. Knowing nothing about the interact budget aspects of public safety and department of motor vehicle cash flow,

income, therefore a $145 speeding ticket is not a big deal. Maybe the guy who flies by me in a Cadillac took on too much debt and is running from repo men. I know everyone in a nice car doesn’t have mountains of money or even a little bit of expendable income. But, when they’re passing you going 80 in a 65, you don’t want to give them the benefit of the doubt. It wouldn’t help my Mazda’s fledgling ego. (Thanks, faulty intake manifold gasket, whatever you are.)

here’s my pipe dream: Minnesota could get rid of the tiered fees for license-plate tabs – which is based on the price of the car. That could be flat fee, which would probably be cheaper for many people. But, we should determine speeding ticket fines based on three things: how fast the driver is going, the average milesper-gallon the vehicle gets and the cost of the car. If you have an expensive gas-guzzler and you get caught going 100 mph, a portion of the ticket would go to state as usual, and the rest would go into an investment fund that would help finance future nuclear power plants. Like it or not, we’re going to run out of oil sooner than you’d like to think, and that’s going to throw a wrench in just

about everything we do here in the suburbs. Since alternative energy is in its infancy, I’m guessing nuclear power will play a huge role in saving our ridiculously convenient lifestyle. I mean, a piece of uranium the size of a golf ball (some have estimated as small as half the size of a ping pong ball) is enough to meet one person’s energy needs for a lifetime. That’s for everything. Car, jet-fuel and toaster. If you search “golf ball uranium” online, you’ll find some sources. Consume at your own digression. Anyway, that’s a whole different column. For now, please, take it easy on the road is all I’m really saying. I’ll try to do the same.

John Estall for EP School Board

Lyndell’s compassion to make Eden Prairie the best recreational program in the state is very evident in annual events and tournaments such as the Jerry Busch Memorial Tournament, Schooner Days Tournament and the Annual Corn Feed Tournament. Events such as these are part of what makes Eden Prairie a great place to live. Lee Ray and his umpire staff have continued to show why they are the class of the western suburb softball leagues. Always professional, on time and in charge, they are the people who make all the planning and organizing turn into reality. For all the softball players who have participated in Eden Prairie softball (and other Adult Eden Prairie sports) over the years, I hope you find the time to say thank you to the people who make it all possible. Thank you Lyndell and Lee. We look forward to another great season in 2012. Steve Knudtson Eden Prairie

To the editor: As parents of three children who attended K-12 at Eden Prairie schools, we have experienced the long history of our community and schools supporting all students in attaining an excellent education. We believe re-electing John Estall for Eden Prairie School Board will keep our schools with this same strong tradition. He has a record of asking the tough questions in order to fully understand all options. His business and financial background are crucial to our district’s funding challenges. John’s integrity and fiscal responsibility will be an enabler to help the school board collaborate in making wise choices on available options for all students, families and educators. Through our children’s education, we have seen the benefits of Eden Prairie schools. John will work to maintain these high standards for all students. He will listen to the community, board and staff to make the right decisions in moving forward. His transparent approach

and collaboration skills will keep everyone informed. John’s goal is to have the community rally around our schools as we have in the past. He is committed to make this happen. Please join us in voting for John Estall for the Eden Prairie School Board. Mark and Joyce Lindner Eden Prairie

claims. On Nov. 8, we have the opportunity to elect a board who will bring back transparency in decision-making, accountability for our tax dollars, and the goodwill of the community. Karla Bratrud is the right leader for the job. She’s been a tireless volunteer in the schools and has also participated in many citizen study groups on the issues affecting the district. She has the institutional knowledge to hit the ground running in January. Karla has a positive, patient and respectful disposition with a strong business background. But most importantly, she leads with the opinion that education in Eden Prairie should be focused on excellence. It will take extraordinarily dedicated people to lead this district back to its rightful place as a top-tier Minnesota school system. I hope you will join me in voting for Karla Bratrud on Nov. 8 so that we can begin to take the next steps down that road. Sheila Kihne Eden Prairie Eden Prairie residents Greg Bode and Alexa Smith also wrote in support of Karla Bratrud.

Karla Bratrud for EP School Board To the editor: I’ve never met a person in Eden Prairie who doesn’t take an interest in educating kids for success. That’s simply the baseline attitude in this community. The Eden Prairie School District manages a $95 Million annual budget, which equates to over $10,000 worth of tax funding per pupil. It’s absolutely critical that we elect people who will look out for the kids, but at the same time look out for the taxpayers who foot the bill. In these precarious economic times, we can no longer afford to make rash decisions based on unfounded

Faith commentary: The secret to contentment BY TROY DOBBS – GUEST COLUMNIST How many of you who are reading this article have come to the stark realization that the acquisition of more does not always lead to contentment? A fortune-teller studied the hand of a young man and said, “You will be poor and very unhappy until you are 37.” The young man responded, “Well, after that, what will happen? Will I be rich and happy?” The fortune-teller said, “No, you’ll still be poor, but you’ll be used to it after that.” Unfortunately, those seem to be our only options in life. We can either grab at something we think will make us happy but never will, or we can just give up, concluding we can never be happy. Either way, contentment eludes us. Neil Warren, in his book, “Finding Contentment,” claims many people seek contentment through what he calls “happiness highs.” He writes, “We leap frog from one activity, one relationship, or one acqui-

sition to the next, and still peace eludes us, a malady expressed in many ways: frequent boredom and emptiness, a frustrating job, a string of unfulfilling relationships, feelings of being lonely, purchasing something only to find the satisfaction wears off almost as fast as we bring it home.” He is certainly onto something, isn’t he? Moreover, God’s Word has a clear word when it comes to contentment. The Bible teaches that contentment is found in God’s providence. In Philippians 4:10-11, Paul rejoices in a gift he received from the Philippians (even though he hadn’t received a gift from them in 10 years) because he knew that ultimately, even the timing of that gift was not outside the domain of a sovereign God. He knew it was all in God’s hands. There was no panic in heart, and no need to manipulate people. He was certain that, in due time, God would order the circumstances so that his need would be met.

And I would say that, until we arrive at the place in life where we believe and understand that God is sovereign and in control, ordering everything for his own holy purposes, and working all things together for the good of those who love him – until we understand this – we will always be discontent. This is because we will take on a role and responsibility for our lives in which the job description can only be performed by Almighty God. So, if you are serious about experiencing contentment, then you must embrace the providence of God over your life. The Word of God says, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). And God promises to meet all of your needs through His Son Jesus Christ, which is exactly what Paul says in Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” Sometimes this verse of scripture is

used like a magical formula implying we can leap over tall buildings in a single bound. In reality the secret to contentment for Paul is not based on how much or how little he has. Oh no! Contentment is found in Christ’s power at work in him. “I can do all things through Christ who gives me His strength.” Paul is declaring that the contentment we so desire in this world does not come from anything this world has to offer. True contentment comes from God alone, through Christ alone. Christ alone brings contentment to our hearts. Nothing this world has to offer will completely satisfy your hunger or quench your thirst. This is why the following quote from C.S. Lewis is so helpful: “If I can find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

Honor Flights pay tribute to World War II veterans ‘We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.’ – Will Rogers BY SUE WEBBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Larry Martin enlisted in the U.S. Navy nine days after he turned 17, and he served for three years, nine months and 20 days – from April 18, 1944 to Feb. 7, 1948. Sixty-three years after his discharge — on Oct. 8, 2011 – Martin was in a group of 100 World War II veterans who faced throngs of people in two cities cheering the service they gave to their country. The group of metro area World War II veterans was chosen for a one-day, whirlwind Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to view the World War II Memorial and other monuments. For vets leaving Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on a charter flight Oct. 8, it was a day of laughter and tears, a time to connect with other veterans and to be honored. “It was wonderful, very impressive,” said Martin, 84, a resident of Golden Valley. “It’s a day I’ll never forget.” Honor Flight was inaugurated in May 2005 and since then has transported an estimated 50,000 veterans from across the U.S. to Washington, D.C., for a day, free of charge. The nonprofit organization now has 96 hubs in 40 states. As of July 2011, Honor Flight Twin Cities has taken 500 metro area World War II men and women veterans to the nation’s capital. Veterans are invited to apply for the Honor Flights. Martin was on the list for two years before he was notified last spring that he had been selected. “The people were by far the most impressive part of the day,” Martin said. “When we landed in Washington, there were 100 to 150 people there to meet us, thanking us for saving our country. When

Jan Smallidge (left) accompanied her father, Wally Fuller of White Bear Lake (center), and Larry Martin of Golden Valley (right), on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Oct. 8. (Submitted photo) we came back home that night, there were another 100 to 150 people at the Twin Cities Airport clapping and cheering us on.” Sixty-two guardians, each of whom paid $500 to accompany the veterans on the trip, were on the chartered Sun Country flight that day. Larry Martin and Wally Fuller, 84, of White Bear Lake, were escorted by Fuller’s daughter Jan Smallidge. “Larry helped me push my dad’s wheelchair that day,” said Smallidge, a Circle Pines resident who is a licensed social worker at Life Fountain Home Health Care. Fuller was on the USS California in the Battle of the South Pacific Ocean and in Japan after the war ended. Martin was on the USS President Adams APA 19 and the USS Hooper, stationed in the Pacific Ocean. He was involved in the invasion of the Lingoyan Gulf and others.

FUNERAL CHAPELS, CEMETERIES, AND CREMATION SERVICES

The McReavy Family

Family owned and operated for over 150 years, Washburn-McReavy is committed to providing you and your family with caring and professional funeral services.

After boarding the flight about 5 a.m., the vets were served coffee and rolls and later sandwiches and beverages. A box lunch was served at noon, and then a buffet dinner in the evening, before the flight back to the Twin Cities. When the vets arrived in D.C., a ground crew that volunteered to be their tour guides was waiting to escort them to festive red, white and blue shuttle buses that were well stocked with refreshments. “People clapped as they got off the plane,” Smallidge said. Then it was full speed ahead to the tour. Highlights included the playing of “Taps” at the World War II Memorial, and a wreath ceremony at the Minnesota Pillar. On the return trip, the group sang the hymns of their various branches of the service. The flight touched down in the Twin Cities about 11 p.m. and was greeted by ROTC students and military personnel, a band, coffee and cookies.

Along with the military people saluting the veterans as they deplaned in the Twin Cities were family members and friends that the vets didn’t know would be on hand for the return trip. Big band music was played near the baggage claim in their honor as they arrived. Anne Janda of Bloomington, campus director of Village Shores senior community in Richfield, was another of the guardians on the Oct. 8 flight. It was her third trip on an Honor Flight. “It was just great,” she said. “I keep applying to be a guardian. Every time I get home, I make another application. It’s incredible. It’s so well organized, just as smooth as it can be. The camaraderie is delightful. The veterans start off the trip not knowing each other, and it turns out to be just delightful to be in their company.” Veterans who make the trip are told not to bring a thing. The Veterans Administration supplies wheelchairs and oxygen; a doctor and several nurses are aboard the flight. Each flight also has a videographer who takes photos of the group and the memorials and later provides a DVD and CD for each of the veterans. “When they get off the plane, you can’t understand how exciting it is,” Janda said. “I really enjoy seeing the surprise on the veterans’ faces when they first get off the plane and see the crowd of people applauding and the kids holding posters of thanks. There are people in Washington who go to meet those flights every weekend. It’s just so moving.” Janda said she also enjoys hearing the veterans’ stories during the 20-hour excursions. “I just cannot say enough about the Honor Flights,” Janda said. “It’s a great history lesson. It’s a great human lesson. It’s the most humbling thing I’ve ever done. It’s an honor to be involved.” Info: HonorFlightTwinCities.org, or 651-481-8835 (Jerry and Jana Kyser).

Enrollment FROM PAGE 1 Not counting Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion, elementary school enrollment has declined by 298 students. Adding Eagle Heights’ 103-student increase brings the total elementary enrollment deficit to 195 compared to last year. That Eagle Heights increase includes an incoming Kindergarten class of approximately 140 students. Cedar Ridge Elementary saw the

largest decrease, with 197 students leaving. The enrollment declines were 147 students worse than the school district anticipated for this year’s budget. They had expected a loss of approximately 160 students this year. Magnuson said the district will not see a big hit on the revenue and expenses side, despite unexpected enrollment drop. Formulas for state funding are also based on average daily attendance, not basic headcounts at certain points in the year. She said even though they expected a

net loss of 160 students, revenue expectations were conservative, so the budget can sustain the unexpected enrollment decline. In terms of planning enrollment sizes principals, staff and administration were watching the numbers coming in throughout the summer. The administration has responded to what principals said they would need in terms of class sizes, Magnuson and Executive Director of Educational Services Stephen West said. School board member Ranee Jacobus said that’s fantastic in terms of educational practice, but the board is responsible for overseeing the budget. Magnuson said if the administration had held principals to strict class sizes based on the declined enrollment, it could have meant a decline in 4-8 fulltime equivalent positions. “We never press that hard on class sizes,” Magnuson said.

School balancing Magnuson also shared preliminary free and reduced price lunch percentages in each of the schools. A goal of the K-6 transformation and boundary changes was to better balance capacity and free and reduced price disparities between schools. Even though the percentages had not hit their targets, Magnuson said the district had made significant progress. Before the boundary changes, the percentage of free and reduced price lunch students at some schools was higher than others. The biggest disparity was 36 percent (not counting Eagle Heights). With the boundary changes, preliminary estimates have the greatest disparity at 15 percent, not counting Eagle Heights.

2011-2012 EP enrollment by school – Cedar Ridge Elementary: 717 (197 less than last year) – Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion: 810 (103 more than last year) – Eden Lake Elementary: 828 (23 less than last year) – Forest Hills Elementary: 562 (15 less than last year) – Oak Point: 1,312 (28 less than last year) – Prairie View Elementary: 546 (35 less than last year) – Central Middle School: 1,422 (31 less than last year) – Eden Prairie High School: 3,104 (80 less than last year) Note: 2011-2012 and 2010-2011 enrollment numbers are based on Oct. 1 data. Source: Eden Prairie School District Oct. 11 School Board meeting packet. Eagle Heights went from 4.9 percent of its students on free or reduced price lunch to an estimated 7.9 percent this year. Even though there was leveling of the disparity between schools, those percentages haven’t reached the K-6 goals. To address that issue, the school board plans on having a workshop to discuss enrollment and expectations given the transformation that began only more than a month ago. Board member Chuck Mueller had introduced a resolution for the board to form a committee of community members, administrators and board members to “further evaluate the effectiveness of the boundary changes,” but that resolution was withdrawn. The withdrawal occurred with 5-2 approval, with Mueller and Jacobus voting against its withdrawal.

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

CMYK

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to October 30th receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Boys cross country The Eden Prairie, Edina and Wayzata boys cross country teams are all ranked among the top six in state, but no more than two of them will represent Section 6AA at the state meet. The section race will be Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista. Wayzata’s Josh Thorson leads the individual contenders and will be challenged by Edina’s Will Burke, Minnetonka’s Kyle Anderson, Hopkins’ John Klecker and Wayzata’s Connor Olson.

Girls cross country Team favorites in Section 6AA girls cross country are last year’s champion, Eden Prairie, and last year’s runner-up, Wayzata. Wayzata ninth-grader Anna French and Edina senior Piper Bain are in the running for the individual title along with Eden Prairie’s Hannah Jeter and Carlin Schulz, and Emily Knapczak of Armstrong. – Compiled by John Sherman

Football playoffs Two Lake Conference football teams, Eden Prairie and Wayzata, are among the favorites as the Class 5A football playoffs begin with 7 p.m. games Tuesday, Oct. 25. Eden Prairie is a contender in Section 6. Also in the title picture are Minnetonka and Shakopee. The Eagles have used a strong ground game all season with senior halfback Andrew Larson averaging slightly more than 10 yards per carry. Minnetonka’s hopes hinge on a stingy defense that held Eden Prairie to its lowest point total of the season in a 16-0 Eagle victory. Wayzata is favored in Section 5, but will have competition from Northwest Suburban Conference powers Champlin Park and Osseo.

Larson’s TD romp sets the tone as Eagles roll past EHS BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Andrew Larson, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior, is definitely a game-breaker for the Eden Prairie football team. He scored his 13th and 14th touchdowns of the season as the Eagles romped to a 357 Lake Conference victory at Edina Oct. 14. Eden Prairie improved to 7-0 overall and 30 in the Lake Conference. As this edition was reaching newsstands Oct. 19, Eden Prairie was playing at Wayzata (also 7-0, 3-0) for the Lake title. “We played well tonight,” EP head coach Mike Grant said following the Edina game. “Andrew’s first touchdown run set the tone.” Larson scored EP’s first touchdown on a 62-yard run and the second on an 11-yard run as the Eagles took a 14-0 first-quarter lead over the outmanned Hornets. Edina has lost four defensive starters to injuries, including All-State candidate Nick Rallis, who had an operation to repair a separated shoulder this week. Larson was quick to praise EP’s offensive line for another good performance. “This is the best offensive line in the state,” he said. “My grandma could have run through the holes they opened tonight.

We wanted to come out and play Eden Prairie football. That means we smack ’em.” It may not be as easy against Wayzata, and Larson said he knew that. What makes Wayzata a special opponent? “They’re faster and more physical than anyone we’ve played,” said Larson. “Wayzata has a great program … this is definitely my favorite game of the year.” Edina head coach Reed Boltmann said Eden Prairie was as good as advertised in Friday night’s game. “They executed better than we did,” said Boltmann, whose team trailed 21-0 at the half. “We did OK, but we shot ourselves in the foot a few times. You can’t make mistakes against a team like Eden Prairie. There was a big interception right before halftime that put us in the hole.” Eden Prairie’s Ryan Gunderson picked off an Edina pass and took it 46 yards to the end zone. Eden Prairie quarterback Grant Shaeffer ran 7 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and Chris Erickson closed EP’s scoring with a 1-yard plunge in FOOTBALL: TO PAGE 27

Jeter, an Edina Prairie High sophomore, took second place in the Lake Conference girls cross country meet Oct. 13 at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista. Jeter’s 4K time was 15 minutes, 11 seconds. EP was the conference team champion.

Andrew Larson Eden Prairie High’s senior halfback had touchdown runs of 62 and 11 yards Oct. 14 as the Eagles coasted to a 35-7 Lake Conference football victory over Edina at Edina’s Kuhlman Field.

Eryn Stewart Stewart, a sophomore at Eden Prairie High, finished sixth overall in the Lake Conference girls cross country meet Oct. 13 at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista. Her 4K time was 15 minutes, 27 seconds.

Kira Zubar The Eden Prairie High swimmer maintains a high metro-area ranking in two events. She has the secondfastest time in the 500-yard freestyle and the third-fastest time in the 200yard freestyle.

Henry Zurn The Edina Prairie High junior earned All-Lake Conference honors in cross country Oct. 13 at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista. He finished ninth overall and was joined on the allconference team by teammates Cal Lawton (12th place) and Andrew Hansen (13th place).

Eagle boys reach Section 2AA soccer title match BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS As usual [for the fourth straight season], Eden Prairie’s boys soccer team advanced to the Section 2AA championship game against Bloomington Jefferson. The game was played Tuesday, Oct. 18 after this issue went to press. No. 4 stateranked Jefferson has claimed the last three section crowns. The state tournament runs Oct. 26, plus Nov. 1 and 3. Eden Prairie improved to 12-3-3 with a 4-0 shutout over Shakopee Oct. 13 and a 3-0 victory against Edina Oct. 15. Jefferson opened the section tourney with a 9-0 blowout of Chanhassen, followed by a 3-0 triumph against Prior Lake, Three different Eagles found the net

against Edina, Michael Vuolo, Alex Alsoz and Natalio Blanche. Goalie Alex Dewey needed only to make four saves. Dewey had five saves in the shutout against Shakopee. Blanche, a junior who leads the team with 16 goals and seven assists, scored two more goals. Also scoring was Abdul Omar and Aaron Huderle. Omar is third in team scoring as a sophomore, netting seven goals with five assists. Ranked second is junior Medo Youssef with nine goals and four assists. Dewey is a senior goalie with a save percentage of 87 and goals against average of 0.8. The girls soccer squad ended the season at 9-3-4 after losing to Edina 3-0 Saturday in the semifinals. The Eagles opened the playoffs by shutting out Chanhassen 3-0.

EP volleyball survives setbacks to capture league championship BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Coach Chad Becker is giving his Eden Prairie volleyball team a little slack after falling short against Andover in the title game of the Eastview tournament Saturday. After all, the team has several “good” excuses for being a little out of gas at the end of a week that included six tough matches in five days, the claiming of EP’s first league championship in five years and a victory over the No. 2-ranked team in the state. And then add the injuries to key players, requiring others to work out of position and unfamiliar faces to take over key roles on the main stage in “pressure-packed” moments. When the dust cleared, Eden Prairie had defeated Edina 3-0 last Tuesday and Wayzata 3-2 Thursday to clinch the Lake Conference title at 7-0. Wayzata slipped to 52 with one game to play. Eden Prairie followed with a second place trophy at the Eastview tournament, defeating Prior Lake 2-0, East Ridge 2-0 and No. 2-ranked Bloomington Jefferson 2-0, before the 2-0 loss to Andover in the title match. Becker points to the big win over Wayzata as the highlight of the week with the conference title on the line. He adds, “We didn’t make a lot of errors, took care of the ball and played good team-style volleyball.” It got a bit complicated for the Eagles when senior hitter Ellen Piechowski suffered a knee injury and had to come out with the match tied at one win each. Becker notes how Piechowski “never comes off the court and is one of the cogs on offense and defense.” The coach called on junior Jenna Meyer to get her first big taste of varsity level play.

Football FROM PAGE 25 the fourth quarter. “We could have made a couple more plays tonight,” said Boltmann. “But I applaud our guys for their effort. We hung in there. Marley Allison had some nice receptions and Graham Woodward had a catch on the sidelines that was as good as any catch you’ll see at the high school level.” Tailback John Bryan scored Edina’s only touchdown on a short run in the fourth quarter. Boltmann said he looked forward to

Trail of Terror

She was a leader on the junior varsity and does not even practice with the varsity. Also getting more court time was junior Camile Schultz, who played in the back row to give relief to Meyer. The position moves stabilized the play and Eden Prairie pulled out a five-game victory over Wayzata, taking the final game 15-10. Wayzata had won five conference titles in a row, be it the former Classic Lake or new Lake Conference. Eden Prairie last won the league title in 2006 when in the old Lake Conference. The Eagles placed second last year in the new format. Another injury happened by a fluke when outside hitter Leesa Hulstrand was playing Friday night at the East View tourney. She went up for a serve and came down on a loose ball that popped loose from another court. She landed on her back, hit her head on the floor and suffered a concussion. This time Becker replaced a fallen starter with senior Gabby Fuerstenberg, moving over from a different hitting spot. “We have a lot of depth and all of the girls respond well by stepping it up when they play,” adds Becker. “We were still able to play at a high level. We also are playing better then when Jefferson beat us in the first match of the season.” Eden Prairie defeated No. 2 Jefferson in the semifinals at Eastview and Andover upset No. 1 Blaine. So, the top two rated teams didn’t reach the finals. “In the Andover match we were mentally and physically not ready to play,” said Becker. “I can understand how that can happen after all the intense matches we played throughout the week. It is not the true microcosm of what our season has been.” Eden Prairie is expecting to earn the top seed in the Section 6AAA tournament which starts Wednesday, Oct. 26. hearing about the Eden Prairie-Wayzata game. He was not able to see it because the Hornets were playing North St. Paul in a non-conference game at Kuhlman Field. Edina had a chance to finish 4-4 overall by winning that one, and given the team’s injury problems, that would be a credible performance, Boltmann said. “If we can win that one, we would have the chance to be the fourth seed in our section and get a home playoff game,” he noted. “We coach the same, win, lose or draw, and our kids have worked hard. “It is a tribute to our conference that we have a lot of great athletes. You look at Eden Prairie and Wayzata, and you have he No. 1 and 2 teams in the state, plus we have Minnetonka and Hopkins.”

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
