“We’re asking for access to our own funds,” said Gortze. A federal law, from a bill passed in 2006, mandates that the postal service set aside $5.5 billion a year to fund future retirement benefits. In 2006, when the economy was better, $5.5 billion a year was feasible, said Mike Zagaros of the Minneapolis letter carriers union. The postal service cannot access those funds until 2016, Gortze said, and the postal service is the only federal group that has a pre-funding benefits requirement for future postal workers. Gortze said he just wants the public to know that the postal service is not asking for taxpayer dollars. If H.R. 1351 becomes law, the postal service could use those funds designated for benefits, Gortze said, and it would leave the postal service with millions in surplus funding. Gortze said Paulsen has been “noncommittal” on signing the bill. Paulsen could not be reached for comment.

A decline in revenue and transactions may mean Eden Prairie’s Hennepin County Service Center will be closing after the first of the year. In a presentation to the Hennepin County Commissioners Sept. 27, county administrator Richard Johnson proposed a budget $50 million less than last year. Among his savings proposals is the service center, which offers a variety of services from passports to motor vehicle services. His budget would also cut a total 127 positions for the coming year. Johnson estimates the county could lose $33 million in state revenues in 2011 and another $20 million in 2012 as a result of changes made to the state’s budget. Kathy Schons, the county’s service centers division manager, said Eden Prairie’s location is “the lower traffic center of the seven.” The Eden Prairie location has 8,0009,000 transactions each month, compared to 9,000-15,000 for the other

Hennepin County locations. The nice thing about the Eden Prairie service center was you seldom had to wait in line, said County Commissioner Randy Johnson, who represents Southern Eden Prairie. The unfortunate thing (was it wasn’t enough) to justify keeping it open, he said. The service center currently employs around 10 people, Schons said, and the county government is hoping it can shut the Eden Prairie location without laying off full-time employees. However, to make that happen, “temporary” staff will no longer be scheduled and full-time staff will take their places at the other Hennepin County service centers. The proposal is part of a preliminary budget, and Hennepin County Commissioners won’t vote on a final budget until December. Recycling – if not now when? The time has finally come. For all other recycling buffs out there, we are now able to recycle what should have always been able to be recycled. The announcement of two Twin Cities waste companies now accepting items such as yogurt containers and bottle caps is long overdue. Before, the only recycling items accepted were numbered one and two, which were usually plastic drink bottles and milk containers. The little numbers on the bottom of plastics, known as the “resin code,” identify what type of plastic it is and whether it’s suitable for recycling. Now, with addition of more items to be recycled, hundreds of tons will be spared from landfills. Now that more plastic recyclables are being collected, there is even less of an excuse not to recycle. Allied Waste, which is one of the companies expanding the items that are acceptable for recycling and

the hauler for the majority of the South Lake’s residents, will now accept numbers one through seven. However, it’s not just plastics when it comes to recycling. Recycling in general is something that we are really behind on. As someone who recycles everything I possibly can, this is a huge step. I’m astounded when I go to throw my trash away what is considered “garbage” by people. Though I live alone, I will throw out a single bag of trash once every two or three weeks. When I look at how often I take my recycling out, it would be insane to think of that ending up in a landfill and not being

reused. Recycling in general should be instilled in everybody -- honestly, it should be common sense, and really is a no-brainer. Is it that those who don’t recycle are lazy? If so, that’s pretty pathetic. It is a little more comprehensible if recycling is not offered, which is should be everywhere. Shorewood, through Allied Waste, offers incentives for recycling. The “RecycleBank” program credits people with points for the amount of recycling collected in the city. The points are then redeemed for rewards such as gift certificates, coupons and special offers. If you are reading this via print and decide to recycle the paper, this and every other newspaper in circulation around the country would contribute to saving a quarter of a million trees per year. The fact is no newspaper or any recyclable paper product should ever

end up in a trashcan. Hennepin County is also continuing efforts to help people sustain better practices when it comes to waste. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the “Choose to Reuse” program encourages residents to buy used or rent products instead of buying them new. For anyone who argues that recycling costs don’t outweigh trash is plain wrong. First, it’s cheaper according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Solid Waste. Curbside pick up for recycling can run $50 to more than $150 per ton of material, while trash pick up can run from $70 to more than $200 per ton of material. And for arguments sake, even if it did cost more the benefit of protecting our planet and helping the human race become better stewards would outweigh any monetary cost. The real cost is to our planet. So do your part, please.

During those four years I have seen her in action as a captain’s parent for two sports and watched her volunteer her time and talents to the schools in many capacities. One thing that bothered me this last year regarding the actions of the superintendent and school board were the lack of transparency. I couldn’t imagine a business being successful with this same lack of transparency, nor can I fathom a business treating its customers the way our district leadership has treated theirs. Karla will provide this transparency and dedicated commitment to academic focus. She will concentrate on helping our students be successful and through her sense of fiscal responsibility. COMMUNITY NOTES Parkinson’s support group meets Oct. 12 A Parkinson’s Disease Support Group meeting will be held 1:30-2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Prairie Adult Care, located in the Victory Lutheran Church at 16200 Berger Drive, Eden Prairie. The support group is for persons with Parkinson’s Disease or related neurological disorders and their caregiver. Meetings focus on current research and treatment, tips for managing daily activities of living, and psychological coping skills. Addiction awareness event Oct. 11 “A Night to Know the Truth,” a prevention seminar for parents will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the Eden Prairie High School auditorium, 17185 Valley View Road. The evening will consist of an open forum for parents to ask questions as well as hearing from teens that were once caught in addiction and how they hid their addictions from their parents. Prep for roundabouts on I-494, Hwy. 169 Six new roundabouts will be installed on the frontage roads surrounding the new Highway 169 and Interstate 494 interchange. Four are scheduled to be operational by the end of the construction season in late fall. Q. What happens to the ashes after cremation? A. Your cremated remains (ashes) will be handled according to your written instructions. They may be picked up by your survivors, or will be delivered or mailed for a fee.

Q. At the time of death, what is the cost for the cremation service? A. The cost of the basic cremation service which includes removal of the body from the place of death, cremation, filing of the necessary papers and cardboard container suitable for burial is presently $1395.00 for members. This is payable at the time services are rendered. The charge to non-members, whom we also service, is more.

At the time of death, our counselors are available to assist your survivors in arranging for memorial services, obtaining certified copies of the death certificate, cemetery services, grave makers and monuments, obituaries for the newspaper and paperwork for Social Security and Veterans’ benefits.

Q. How do I join the Cremation Society of Minnesota? A. Fill out the registration form and mail it to our office with a one time registration fee of $15.00 per person. This fee defrays the cost of setting up and maintaining your records. It is not refundable nor an offset to the final service costs. We will register you and send you wallet-sized membership cards and certificate of registration. Members may call or write us regarding any related questions.

Roe family singers earn McKnight Fellowship BY PAUL WAHL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Most musicians perform for the love of performing, the camaraderie and the experience of being onstage. Gigs don’t always pay the bills, but performers find something else to supplement their income. Once you reach the point where you’re doing it full-time, you might say you’ve arrived. By that definition, Kim and Quillan Roe of Plymouth have arrived. The Roes are the leaders of the award-winning Roe Family Singers, an eclectic mix of musicians who perform across the Twin Cities and around the country. The group formed in 2003 but its coming of age happened this past summer. The group was awarded a McKnight Artist Fellowship, which is designed to provide artists “resources and opportunities they need to succeed.” For the Roes, that meant $25,000 and the impetus for both of them to give up their “other” jobs to be full-time musicians.

The entire experience is best described as Kismet. “In one week’s time we received three emails telling us about the McKnight Fellowship and telling us we should apply,” Quillan said. They attended an information meeting. “We looked around the room at all of the really great musicians there and thought to ourselves ‘what are we doing here?’” Quillan said. Undeterred, they submitted the paperwork and a CD of their music. Eventually they were asked to perform live for a panel of judges. “We had been praying for a sign from God that we were supposed to be giving up our jobs and going full-time with the music, and this was it,” Quillan said. Quillan, a Plymouth native and a product of its public schools, has been performing since age 15. Eventually he joined the band Accident Clearinghouse. Some years later, he met his future wife, Kim, and they were married. They have two young daughters – Elspeth and

Onnee -- who are also living the musician life. From their dating days on, Kim had bugged Quillan about starting a band together. He resisted. “I had seen too many couples who had bands and fought and eventually broke up over it,” Quillan said. “I did not want that to happen.” One night in 2004, Quillan was contacted by phone about Accident Clearinghouse performing a Johnny Cash Tribute. The band had by then broken up, so Quillan said he covered the phone and yelled to Kim, “Do you still want to start a band together?” She said “yes” and the tribute was their first gig. The Roe Family Singers was on the road. One of the first members added to the band was Adam Wirtzfeld, who plays the saw. Yes, the saw. “Kim and Quillan have amassed a small army of people who each bring something really great to the table, and when we all combine our efforts, we can

create something that none of us can do alone,” said Wirtzfeld, who is a cartoonist and graphic artist by trade. He said a big attraction for him is the opportunity to play for audiences from children to grandparents in venues from schools to street festivals to “dive bars.” It wasn’t necessarily the music initially. “The old-timey and early country music that makes up our mainstay is not necessarily music that I had a great appreciation for when we started,” Wirtzfeld said. “But it just seemed to work really well with the saw.” Now he says he has a “soft spot” for the type of music the Roe Family Singers perform. Other band members include Kurt Froehlich on mandolin, Dan Gaarder on guitar and vocals, Rich Rue on dobro guitar (think Lester Flatt) and dulcimer, Jon Olson on upright bass, Ric Lee on fiddle and Rob David on jug. Pladsen is the school district’s Director of Teaching and Learning for elementary schools. “Janet has outstanding qualifications,” Board member John Estall said of Pladsen, who holds a superintendent’s license and has served as an assistant superintendent at another school district. Estall and board members Suzanne Kutina and Carol Bomben form a committee that will look for an interim superintendent to fill the position November until a new superintendent is found. The board expects to hire a search firm to conduct the superintendent search, which will begin in January, after four winners of the November election take their seats. Bob Noyed introduced himself to the entire board Sept. 27 as well. He was chosen as executive director of communications and community relations, a position left open in July. Noyed comes to Eden Prairie with 26 years of communications experience,

board member Ranee Jacobus said during her introduction of Noyed. He will be leaving the Wayzata School District, where he has served as its communications director since March 2006. Prior to that, he was with Elk River and Robbinsdale school districts. He has also run his own communications business, and is a past president of the National School Public Relations Association. “There was complete consensus among the board members involved in the process,” and among staff members, said board member Kim Ross. Ross, Jacobus and board member Chuck Mueller took part in the hiring process with administrators. The board usually does not take such an active role in hiring higher-level staff positions, but changed its policy in August so it could take part in hiring this specific position. The school board had also agreed its wants the communications head to take an active role in reaching out to the community, hence the addition of ‘community relations’ to the job title. Noyed is expected to start at the end of this month.

band in the Battle of the Jug Bands in Minneapolis. The group is perhaps best known for its regular Monday night performances at the 331 Club in Minneapolis. Working with owner Jarret Oulman, they have created a Twin Cites tradition. “Those performances are really what started the band on the path to where it is now,” Quillan said. Since Kim and Quillan didn’t know enough songs to fill 90 minutes in the early going of the gig, they recruited their musician “family” and friends. When they’re not at the 331, it’s possible to catch the Roe Family Singers at events such as St. Paul Farmer’s Market, festivals of all sorts and even the Plymouth Library. Later this month they will perform at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Ark. The group released its second CD earlier this summer, “The Owl and the Bat and the Bumble Bee.” It contains a number of original performances along with some well-known traditional standards. More touring and recording are on the schedule for the remainder of 2011 and into next year. McKnight Foundation honored 43 artists and ensembles for 2011-12 in 12 disciplines. “The McKnight Artist Fellowships nurture and honor the dedication of Minnesota’s individual artists,” said Robert J. Struyk, chairman of the board of the organization. “As we all benefit from their creative and hard work, we at McKnight are proud to support their ongoing success.”

Eden Prairie Police start internal investigation BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Eden Prairie Police Department has an open administrative investigation to determine if members of the department used a state database appropriately, according to a statement from city staff that was released Sept. 2. The On Aug. 30, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Driver and Vehicle Services division requested assistance from the Eden Prairie Police Department while conducting an audit of the DVS database usage. Police department administration will investigate the matter to the full extent and take “appropriate action” if any misuse of the database occurred, according to the statement. Since the investigation is active, no other details from the city were available. A representative from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety could not be reached.

Bloomington orchestra to perform Sunday The Bloomington Symphony Orchestra will present its first concert of its 2011-12 season this weekend. The concert is 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 9201 Normandale Blvd., Bloomington. The “Life: Beautiful, Joyous and Unbridled,” concert will feature guest conductor and music director candidate Wesley Schulz. The concert will also feature Minnesota Orchestra bass player Kathryn Nettleman. Schulz is one of four candidates selected by a search committee to perform with the orchestra in 2011-12. Donations sought for new memorial The Minnesota Fire Service Foundation is launching a campaign to raise $600,000 by December 31 to build an accessible memorial, partial rendering at right, on the grounds of the State Capitol, where families, friends and communities can pay proper tribute. The Eagles improved to 5-0 with a dominating 62-20 victory over the Tigers (3-2) Sept. 30. Eden Prairie will rejoin Lake Conference action this week by hosting Minnetonka at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Aerie Stadium. Many area high school games are being played that night because of the Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, that begins at sundown Friday, Oct. 7. The Skippers are 4-1 overall after a 35-7 loss to Wayzata last week. Minnetonka led 7-6 at halftime before the undefeated Trojans pulled away in the second half. “We know we will be going up against a strong, physical team this week,” said Eden Prairie coach Mike Grant. “We held a few of our injured players out of our game last week against Minneapolis South and should be pretty healthy to face Minnetonka.” Grant was able to rest many of his regulars for much of the second half against South. The Eagles led 14-0 after one quarter. Roy McGhee ran 25 yards for one touchdown and Connor Johnson caught a 35-yard scoring pass from quarterback Grant Shaeffer. Eden Prairie was ahead 28-6 at halftime. Andrew Larson (21-yard run) and Chris Erickson (13-yard run) came through with second-quarter touchdowns. McGhee scored his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter as the Eagles built a 35-14 lead. Eden Prairie scored four times in the fourth quarter. Charley Venable had touchdown runs of 15 and 24 yards. The Eagles’ defense scored the final two touchdowns. John Christiansen returned an interception 55 yards for a score. But Eden Prairie’s rebuilt girls soccer squad has made a strong statement that it intends to be a contender for the state title again this season. The Eagles, who were ranked third in Class AA last week, were 8-2-4 after playing to a scoreless tie against Edina on Oct. 1. Eden Prairie’s 10-game unbeaten streak ended with a 1-0 loss to Hopkins Sept. 27. “It was a close game and we had a few scoring opportunities,” said Eden Prairie coach Tony Bidwell. “Losing a big Lake Conference match was a letdown, but the girls have done well throughout the season.” Eden Prairie ninth-grader April Bockin has been one of the Eagles’ scoring leaders this season. She came through with two goals during Eden Prairie’s 2-0 victory over Bloomington Jefferson Sept. 25. Sophomore Katie Fuhs tended goal to preserve the shutout. Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
