SouthWest Transit makes changes Transportation group alters plans to balance budget, prepare for future

BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie Public Schools’ interim superintendent Jon McBroom took his eight-month post in November after retiring from the Shakopee School District in May, where he served for 11 years. His total superintendent experience spans 28 years, and his contract with Eden Prairie schools ends June 30, 2012. The Sun-Current sat down to talk with McBroom after his first school board meeting Nov. 15, and asked him about how his experiences could benefit Eden Prairie. The following is an edited version of the interview. Q: Is there anything that

Eden-Prairie based SouthWest Transit is making a few changes to improve its finances and prepare for the future. The transit company, which offered more than one million rides in 2010, is opening up a new transit station in Chanhassen in December and will soon offer stops on the Jefferson Lines bus routes in time for the holiday season. It has also put an advertising bus wrap, one that covers the entire rig, on one of its buses and is considering it for others. “We’re doing things a little different than we have in the past,” said SouthWest Executive Director Len Simich. stands out in the district to you? A: “First of all, I think my impression that it’s a quality district with a lot of good things going on – that’s definitely been borne out. As I’ve surmised, there’s really a lot of parental support and pride in the district. … I’m really sensing here, that there’s a pride factor – that it’s at a high level, at least by a large bunch of people. “I think that the people I have met are

proving very competent. I had a chance to get out in the buildings some. I’d like to get there more. The one thing I’ve noticed is there’s a lot of initiative to try to improve the district and improve the opportunities for kids. … The number of opportunities in the district are probably more than I’ve experienced anywhere else.” Q: Are there any re-occurring subjects or things that people want to know about? That people are concerned about? A: “I think there’s some – well, they just kind of want to know what I’m going to be doing or what I am doing. Because, I don’t know that a superintendent’s role is always really understood by people.” Q: So how do you explain that to them? A: “Well, it could take about a month (to explain). I think you just go about explaining that you work for the school board to make sure that the school district is moving forward in the directions that have been set. And that they’re kind of managing the different things that go on in the district and make sure kids’ needs are being met. “I think there’s, over time, you figure out what priorities they have. As far as, what are the things on the horizon that have to be dealt with? And then I see my job as helping them research options and background information and then maybe give some advice about options that I see or things that they need to think about. … “One of the things that people have asked me about is … ‘how are we going to get the next superintendent? You know, who’s involved in that?’ That’s really the board’s decision – the one hir-

ing thing that’s most important for them. “But, based on what I’ve listened to and heard so far and what I’m used to, I think there will be opportunities for staff and for the community, that’s parents and others, to be able to have some input to the characteristics that the district will look for. … “Then I think the transition about the change in facilities and those types of things are the things that people have asked me about, and if I’m aware of what’s going to happen. Basically I’m not Jon McBroom up to speed about that, so there’s not a lot of definitive things I can say about that, yet.” … Q: Do you consider your role in any way to be more of a consulting or kind of, maybe a counseling role, since you bring that experience, and it’s more of a short term period? A: “I think first and foremost my job is to be superintendent for eight months. I would characterize that as more than being a consultant … I think what I can do since I’ve been in varying sized districts, and I’ve been in the superintendence for 28 years? “I’ve probably seen a lot of things and a lot of different ways to do things. I think there’s a lot of ways that districts MCBROOM: TO PAGE 14

It’s a Fare for All BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Every month, anyone on a tight budget can get enough low-priced groceries to make hearty meals, even during the holidays – a $30 Thanksgiving dinner suitable for a family, to be specific. That’s what Fare for All, an Emergency Foodshelf Network program, provides to hundreds of families throughout the Twin Cities Metro area. The co-operative, nonprofit food shelf is able to sell the food packages at a 40 percent lower price than grocery stores, and people may purchase as many as they’d like, said Fare for All program director Sophia Lenarz-Coy. Once a month, a truck delivers a variety of low-priced food packages to a specific participating site, where volunteers are ready to offload those packages and sell them to whomever is interested. No pre-ordering, pre-qualifications or income requirements are needed to purchase, Lenarz-Coy said. It’s like a mobile storefront. During Eden Prairie’s November opening, 89 families took advantage of the November sale, and there are 19

Organization helps provide low-cost groceries to ease tight budgets

other sites in the metro that receive a special delivery from the food shelf network, including New Hope, St. Louis Park, Richfield and Fridley. In November there were 91 households served in St. Louis Park and another 118 in Fridley. “So, we’ve just really seen a lot of people interested in saving money,” LenarzCoy said. Richfield scheduled its drop-off day for Nov. 22, and the emergency food shelf ’s headquarters in New Hope also offers food packages. The packages usually contain a mix of fruits and vegetables and a variety of meats. There are also vegetarian packs and other variations. In November, a Thanksgiving-oriented food pack was thrown into the mix, comprised of a 10-12 pound turkey, pumpkin pie and all the fixings for a holiday meal. In Eden Prairie, the service has come to town in collaboration with People Reaching Out to Other People, and when the delivery truck shows up each month, employees from Eaton Corporation volunteer to sell the packages at Eden

Prairie United Methodist Church, 15050 Scenic Heights Road. PROP Executive Director Anne Harnack said she encourages everyone to take advantage of the deal, not just those who seek PROP assistance. “More people could certainly benefit from this,” Harnack said. The December Eden Prairie drop-off is scheduled Dec. 6 at the United Methodist Church, Harnack said. These express sites are different from the Emergency Foodshelf Network’s other sites in Minnesota (more than 70) where people must pre-order their meal packs. Lenarz-Coy said the express service came about because those on a tight budget can find it hard to spend money on food they will not receive until later. And, it was hard to know what they would want. The express service was intended to take those hassles away, she said.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Attention stay-at-home moms BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Any mother with young children who is new to the community, is looking to meet other young parents or merely wants to mix up afternoons with their children could find some welcome company at the Twin Cities metro-area chapters of Moms Offering Moms Support Club. The MOMS Club has more than 2,100 chapters internationally, including many in the metro area and two in Eden Prairie. Each independently run chapter aims to bring together stay-at-home mothers who are looking for more connections and activities than the daily schedule that can bring boredom or even loneliness. The MOMS groups have monthly community activities, a board meeting, group meeting, moms-only outing (without their children), baby-sitting connections and at least one charitable event every year. These meetings are not of the typical non-profit variety. During the November all-group meeting for the Staring Lake MOMS Club of Eden Prairie, the chapter’s five board members brought their children to the home of Jennifer Stevens, where they could commiserate, relax and let their children play together. “It’s not very rigid,â€? said mother Kari Mitchell. “It’s easy going. ‌ The goal is just to get people connected.â€? How is the MOMS Club different than just gathering among fellow friends? Mitchell said it isn’t much different – it just gives mothers and other caregivers invited to join an opportunity to connect

in ways they otherwise would not. Mitchell said she’s from Milwaukee, and when she moved to Eden Prairie she didn’t know many other people, so the MOMS Club gave her that chance to meet others and change up her daily schedule. “We probably wouldn’t have met each other otherwise, Mitchell said. It’s also nice to take part in organized activities, such as tours, various outings or service projects. And, for a $25 annual membership, most of the 20 Staring Lake members take part solely in the planned events, such as a tour of the Eden Prairie Police station, story times, book club and the other group-oriented happenings. If someone is interested in joining but can’t afford it, the fee can be waived, Mitchell said. Mitchell Lake MOMS Club is the other chapter in Eden Prairie. The first Eden Prairie club started in 1999, grew to three chapters and is now down to two, said Brittney Westin. Those who live on the east side of town attend the Staring Lake group and those on the west side join the Mitchell Lake group, according to Westin. Joining is as simple as signing a liability form, Mitchell said. From there, mothers and caregivers can take part as often as they wish.

Celebrate thanks and giving this month Or lessons I learned from kindergarteners It just might be true that you learn all you really need to know in kindergarten. I recently visited a group of preschool and kindergarten students to ask them what they are thankful for this year. I thought I’d come away with some silly answers for this Thanksgiving Day column. And I did, but I also learned that Thanksgiving is lot more to young kids than drawing handprint turkeys, eating pumpkin pie and giving thanks. Introducing me to her class, Rita Miller, a teacher at Step By Step Montessori of Southdale in Edina, said she considers November a month of both thanks and giving. “It’s a good month to think about what we’re thankful for and also to give to those don’t have what we have,” she told her students. Rather than ask them what

KATIE MINTZ Edina Community Editor

they are thankful for, maybe I should have asked how they are giving to others. Based on what School Director Rachel Hagenson told me, they would have had a lot to say. The 150 students at Step by Step, from infants to kindergarteners, are currently collecting toys for Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People, which serves families in Bloomington, Richfield, Edina, and south Minneapolis. Hagenson said the highlight of the annual drive is seeing children so excited to part with their presents. Later this winter, the school, which has seven other metro locations, will put together birthday bags for the organization. Twice a month, the kindergartners also visit a nearby senior living facility to share their school lessons and play games with the residents.

“It’s nice to teach kids about generosity and giving at this time of year, and it’s never too early to start teaching kids how fortunate we are and that not everyone is as fortunate,” said Hagenson, who noted that caring for the community is an important part of Montessori education. So this Thanksgiving, I’m taking a cue from the preschoolers and kindergarteners, who are already well on their way to a solid education in citizenship. While, of course, I am thankful for many things – some of the same things as the students below – this November I will focus on giving. Around your table this evening, consider asking your family members and friends what they are thankful for and how they are giving too. And without further ado, here is how the preschool and kindergarten students at Step by Step Montessori of Southdale in Edina answered “What are you thankful for?” “I’m thankful for cooking with my mom.” – Carson Weiler, age 6, of Bloomington

“I’m thankful for my pet Oso, a pug.” – Raja Chinnakotla, 5, of Edina “I’m thankful for my Star Wars movies.” – Parker Hunt, 5, of Minneapolis “I’m thankful for my friends.” – Luke Jeschke, 5, of Bloomington “I’m thankful for my friends too.” – Lizzie Jeschke, 5 of Bloomington “I’m thankful for my family.” – Caden Sosa, 6, of Minneapolis “I’m thankful for my family too.” – Bjorn Petersson, 5, of Minneapolis “I’m thankful to have my mommy and daddy.” – Andy Brown, 4, of Bloomington “I’m thankful for everything.” – Henry Riehle, 4 of Minneapolis “I’m thankful for my toys.” – Theo VanKerk, 4, of Minneapolis “I’m thankful for having a family.” – Alex Griffin, 4, of Edina “I’m thankful for everything.” – Ananya Biswal, 4, of Edina “I’m thankful for everything.” – Madeline Gray, 4, of Minneapolis

thanks to the citizens of Eden Prairie for giving me the opportunity to serve as a member of the Eden Prairie School Board for the last four years. I am proud of the positive changes that were made during my tenure on the board. Recently the National Coalition on School Diversity, school-diversity.org, expressed support for the plan being implemented in Eden Prairie. While I have enjoyed my time as a

board member, I look forward to serving the students and families of Eden Prairie in other ways. I will continue to advocate for the needs of all students, especially those who sometimes struggle to be heard. I trust that the new board will search for a new superintendent who is dedicated to the success of each and every student in Eden Prairie. Kim Ross Eden Prairie

are successful with things. Not everybody has the same curriculum. Not everybody offers the same programming. There’s a lot of different ways to do that. “Hopefully some of the things I’ve experienced over 28 years, that as points come up here, I’m going to be able to say, ‘Okay, I know that here’s another way of doing this. This is a different perspective you might want to think about.’ In looking at statistic and that type of thing, I might say, ‘Here’s a different way we could package this. Here’s another way to present this.’ “I think you’ve got a communications and community relations person who’s also coming in who’s got some difference of ideas about what some other people do. Whether it’s a fulltime position like [Bob Noyed’s in communications] or my interim thing, I think that’s one thing I can do. “And, I don’t necessarily have to put something in place that will help me stay in the job. Because, June 30th I get to go back to doing kind of other things I want to do. … Hopefully I can be objective and really helpful for some of the comprehensive – looking at all of the different programming and things going on here.” Q: With the new board coming in January, is there any kind of … advice for new board members, in general? A: “It’s probably the same advice I’ve given to people for a long period of time, because I’ve worked for a whole lot of

We meet with them. We try and see what information they might like to see so they’re up to speed as much as possible, and then I tell them just to try and stay objective and look at the big picture and understand that they’re probably going to have to go through a full year to experience all of the different things that go in on in the district. “Because, whether it’s budget cycles or staffing cycles or other kinds of planning – decision making – it’s not like you come in and one month you do that, and then you do it again the same month, and the next month and the next month. “There’s this cycle. And, I really encourage them to just understand that they’ll get through everything, but it just takes some time. And, listen to other people, but make sure that you stand up and express your own opinions too, and vote your conscience. “And, if you need more information, just ask, because my job is to make sure that the board can function effectively and do what’s best for the children and other members of the community. So that’s how I’d approach that.” … Q: Is there anything specifically that you are focusing on or areas that you do want to kind of focus on? A: “Well, what I’d like to look at is try-

difference for kids. “But, sometimes if you have too many things going on and you don’t have a comprehensive approach, that can kind of spread out your resources. “And, so what’d I’d like to do is be able to focus on the things that are important, kind of for long-term planning and get that kind of information available to

the board. “So … that they’re going to have different pieces of information that they can feel confident about, that they can then use when making their decision. So, whether that’s, ‘What’s the prospects for student enrollment going forward?’ or ‘What type of technology things are out there that we need to look at?’

“How do all those things kind of mesh together, too? Because you can’t do everything. And, you have to set some priorities, and maybe that’s something I can help with in the next few months here.” To see more interview questions with Jon McBroom, visit MinnLocal.com/ eden_prairie.

CITY NOTES Eden Prairie wins first in Digital Cities survey

Why Live with Chronic Ankle Pain?

The city of Eden Prairie was awarded first place in the Center for Digital Government “Digital Cities Survey” in the population category of 30,000 to 74,999. The 11th annual survey spotlights the municipalities that best show how information and communication technology are used to enhance public service. The survey is conducted by the Center for Digital Government and Government Technology magazine and the top 10 cities are selected in four different population categories. This year’s survey focused on results achieved by cities, via the use of technology, in operating efficiencies and realizing strategic objectives despite current fiscal constraints. Consolidation efforts were a large part of the reason Eden Prairie took first place in its population category. The city has been knee-deep in application integration, service customization

and hardware consolidation projects, which have improved service delivery throughout its operations. Eden Prairie has also saved approximately 28 percent on its desktop and laptop computer purchases by switching to a local reseller and buying from a contract set up by the state of Minnesota. Lisa Wu, IT manager, said the project the City is most proud of is implementing a joint police and fire dispatch system to better share information between the departments. Previously, there were four different systems. But now combined in one solution, Eden Prairie can share information with both Hennepin County and the state of Minnesota to enhance public services. Wu said other efforts contributing to Eden Prairie’s recognition centered on the adoption of GIS and GPS technology to support various city departments, and using local school and retail buildings to wirelessly connect city sites to help avoid the high cost of fiber connectivity. SouthWest FROM PAGE 1 A majority of SouthWest’s $7.6 million budget in 2010 came from the Motor Vehicle Sales Tax. But, it also receives supplemental funding from the state, which declined by more than $600,000 in 2011 compared to 2010. The transit line is getting as innovative as it can, while maintaining its high standards for service, Simich said. One of those changes includes driv-

ing empty buses as little as possible. The main example is SouthWest parking empty buses in downtown Minneapolis after running the morning rush-hour routes to the downtown area. Rather than having drivers bring empty buses back to SouthWest Station, they leave them at the Metrodome and then hop on a charter bus back to the transit station. Then, the drivers come back to the buses in the afternoon to run the afternoon commute routes. “That little thing saved us in excess of $160,000 last year alone,” Simich said.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

It comes down to doing more with less, Simich said, which unfortunately has included laying off two employees and not replacing two other employees who retired after 17 and 21 years of service. “Balancing the budgets are never easy,” he said. A decline in rider numbers has not helped the budget, either. As the number of jobs in the metro has declined so has ridership, Simich said. Although in October, SouthWest ridership was up 5 percent over October 2010, Simich said. “So the trend is trending upward, and that’s what we need to see,” he said.

New Chanhassen Station Our Garage Door Openers Work Even When The Power Is Out. With our Battery Backup feature, even during a power outage, this garage door opener works up to 40 times within 24 hours

Even though the budget is a little tougher to balance in the last couple years, SouthWest is planning for a better future – since gas prices are expected to go up and with it more of a reliance on public transportation, especially in the west metro, Simich said, a safe area with great schools and lots of capacity for future growth. So, a new Chanhassen station can help relieve a full Eden Prairie parkand-ride while also accommodating for the anticipated future growth. Routes into and out of the

Chanhassen station, with a 420-vehicle capacity, are expected to begin Dec. 12. It will accommodate those living further west than the Eden Prairie Station, which has been at full capacity, according to Simich. The station is located north of the Soo Line railroad, west of Great Plains Boulevard and south of the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. But SouthWest transit could also lose riders to the Southwest Corridor Light Rail, which will run from Minneapolis to Eden Prairie. Its first run is expected to take place in 2017. Simich said SouthWest has just started its involvement in the light rail planning, and once the rail is in place, the bus line could be looking to serve additional western suburb areas. The light rail could take a lot of business from the bus company’s express service, Simich said, so it may adjust by offering more western suburb routes – within Eden Prairie, further west or even up Highway 169. They are considering a lot of ideas at this point, Simich said.

SouthWest FROM PAGE 24 travel, and new connections at the SouthWest Transit stations could be attractive to area natives who attend college in greater Minnesota, Wisconsin and other Midwest institutions. Jefferson can provide service closer to riders’ homes in the southwest metro, so they don’t have to pick up a bus in Minneapolis, said Jefferson Vice President of Marketing Bonnie Bucanan. The company has had a lot of requests to pick up a Jefferson bus route without having to travel to Minneapolis first. “We hear it constantly. ‘We don’t

want to go to downtown Minneapolis. We want to go to Eden Prairie or Chanhassen,’” Bucanan said. The first route will begin Nov. 30, Bucanan said. It will start at the Hawthorne Transportation Center in Minneapolis, make a pick up in Eden Prairie and then head to Glencoe, Willmar and to Sioux Falls, S.D. Area residents will also be able to take a SouthWest bus to Minneapolis, where they can connect with any Jefferson line running through downtown Minneapolis, according to Bucanan. SouthWest stations expect to start selling Jefferson tickets in January, she said. SouthWest can generate a little extra revenue from commission on the Jefferson bus tickets it sells at its stations, Simich said.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR Eden Prairie, state Class 4A runner-up last season, will open its 2011-12 girls basketball season against visiting Eagan at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. The Eagles will travel to Apple Valley for a 7:15 p.m. game Friday, Dec. 2.

The Eden Prairie junior outside hitter was named to the all-tournament team after leading the Eagles to the state Class 3A volleyball championship. Wilhite had 80 kills and 37 digs in three state matches and provided 33 kills in the Eagles’ five-set win over Lakeville North in the finals.

Eden Prairie seeks seventh state football title BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie moved within one victory of its seventh state football championship and reached the Prep Bowl in convincing fashion. Eden Prairie, ranked fourth in the state, improved to 11-1 with a 49-7 victory over ninth-rated Totino-Grace in the state Class 5A semifinals Nov. 18 at the Metrodome. The Eagles are back in the Prep Bowl for the first time since 2009, when they lost 16-5 to Cretin-Derham Hall. Eden Prairie will meet either top-rated Wayzata or Cretin-Derham Hall in the state title game at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, in the Metrodome. Eden Prairie and Cretin-Derham have not met since the 2009 title game. If Eden Prairie plays Wayzata, the Eagles would be seeking revenge for a 9-0 regular-season loss. “I’m excited for the kids to get this chance to play in the Prep Bowl,” said

Eden Prairie head coach Mike Grant. “This is not the most talented group we have had here, but the players have worked as hard as any I have coached. “It’s been a long year of preparation for this opportunity. The kids have been working out in the weight room consistently since our loss to Brainerd in the state quarterfinals last season.” Totino-Grace dominated state Class 4A action during the past decade but moved up to Class 5A this season. T-G (11-2) learned the hard way how competitive the large-school class is. Eden Prairie broke the game open early and built a 42-0 halftime lead. Eden Prairie senior back Andrew Larson scored four times in the first half on runs of 3, 10, 6 and 4 yards. The elusive halfback has rushed for more than 1,500 yards this season and has gained more than 4,000 yards during his prep career. Larson has also scored 50 touchdowns FOOTBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Leddy is fifth in scoring for the Chicago Blackhawks with two goals and eight assists. The 20-year-old defenseman won the state’s Mr. Hockey award as a senior at Eden Prairie High School. Leddy played for the University of Minnesota after his high school career. He was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the first round of the 2009 NHL draft before being traded to Chicago in 2010.

Ellen Piechowski The Eden Prairie senior came through with 12 kills in the Eagles’ state volleyball title-game win over Lakeville North. Piechowski contributed 39 kills and 65 digs in three state matches and was named to the all-tourney team. EP finished 27-6 overall.

Tanner Steen This Eden Prairie resident played a key role for the Holy Family High School football team that concluded the season 10-2. Holy Family lost 34-10 to Fairmont in the state Class 3A quarterfinals. Steen had one of his best games against Duluth Denfeld during the regular season, rushing 10 times for 99 yards and catching two passes for 29 yards. Defensively, he was credited with 15 tackles against Duluth Denfeld.

Kira Zubar Zubar, a sophomore on the Eden Prairie girls swimming team, broke the pool record at Edina while winning the Section 6AA title in the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 57.81 seconds.

Happy to be back covering local sports scene This sportswriter is glad to be back in action after being sidelined by hip replacement surgery and rehabilitation for the past five weeks. I would like to thank all my friends, coaching acquaintances, readers and coworkers for their well wishes and support during my medical leave. The Sun sports staff of John Sherman, Mike Shaughnessy and Nick Clark deserves thanks for filling in so well for me during my absence. And special thanks goes to Dave Pedersen for his contributions while I was away. And photographer Brian Nelson is to be commended for supplying top-notch sports photos for the Eden Prairie, Richfield, Bloomington and St. Louis Park sections. I did my rehab at Bloomington Masonic Home and discovered that many of the facility’s personnel and patients are longtime readers of Sun Newspapers. Bloomington resident Rod Lingenfelter was also at the Bloomington Masonic Home during my stay while rehabbing after knee surgery. It was fun to reminisce

Football FROM PREVIOUS PAGE in three varsity seasons. Roy McGhee added a 7-yard touchdown run and Logan Duitsman returned an interception 65 yards for another first-half score. Melvin De-Souza tipped the pass, allowing Duitsman to make the interception. Eden Prairie finished its scoring in the third quarter on a 91-yard pass from quarterback Grant Shaeffer to wide receiver Rashawn Fountain. Jack Ibach kicked five extra points for Eden Prairie. Tight end Zach Hovey caught a conversion pass from Shaeffer after one touchdown. Totino-Grace spoiled EP’s shutout bid by scoring on a 3-yard run with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. “We scored early and kept the pressure on Totino-Grace,” said Grant. “I’m proud of the way our team played and for the great job our coaches did in preparing a good game plan. “I thought our offensive tackles, Nick Plager and Dan Urquhart, played their best games while starter Nick Davidson was out with a broken ankle.” De-Souza and Anthony King-Foreman led the Eagle defense in tackles with five apiece. Drake Michaelson, King-Foreman and Jesse Krull had one sack each.

with Lingenfelter and visit with his sons Steve and Jim, who starred in basketball at Jefferson. I reminded Steve, a 6-foot-8 center, about the way he outplayed Kevin McHale of Hibbing in the state championship game in 1976. The Jaguars defeated Hibbing 60-51 in the title game. McHale went on to star at the University of Minnesota and then earn hall of fame honors as a member of the Boston Celtics. Steve Lingenfelter played collegiately at Minnesota and South Dakota State before playing pro ball in the NBA and Europe.

and watch area athletes in televised action. Richfield’s Trevor Olson and his Northern Illinois football team has appeared often on ESPN. The former Spartan lineman starts at offensive tackle for the Huskies and the senior is considered a potential high pick in the NFL draft next spring. One of the major reasons for the Gopher men’s hockey team success this winter is the play of freshman forward Kyle Rau of Eden Prairie. Rau led the Eagles to the state Class AA championship last winter and has been a key scorer for the No. 1-ranked Gophers this season. Bloomington’s Jordan Taylor is completing his senior season as the starting point guard at the University of Wisconsin. Taylor received all-conference and All-American honors as a junior last season and should earn more awards during his final collegiate season.

Local athletes excel

Congrats to Eagles

I tried staying up to date with the local sports scene during my medical leave and had plenty of time to peruse newspapers

Congratulations are in order for a pair of Eden Prairie High School teams. The Eagles’ volleyball team, ranked

sixth for much of the season, won the state Class 3A title with a hard-fought five-set victory over Lakeville North in the finals Nov. 12 at Excel Energy Center. Eden Prairie was the fourth seed in the tournament but defeated No. 1 Blaine and Hutchinson before topping Lakeville North in the title match. Head coach Chad Becker did a great job molding his team into a championship squad. The Eagles finished 27-6 and may be better next season with several of their top players returning. Eden Prairie’s football program should be saluted for returning to the Prep Bowl. The Eagles are 11-1 and will face unbeaten Wayzata in the Class 5A championship game Friday, Nov. 25, at the Metrodome. Eden Prairie lost 9-0 to the Trojans during the regular season. Head coach Mike Grant and his assistants do a great job building the Eagles into an annual state title contender. Eden Prairie will seek its seventh state football title against Wayzata. Look for the Eagles to pull out a 20-17 victory over the Trojans and achieve another state championship.

Eagles take fourth place in state swimming EP’s Zubar is Class AA champion in the 500-yard freestyle BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Lake Conference teams dominated the state Class AA girls swimming and diving championships Nov. 17-19 at the University of Minnesota. Edina won the state title easily with 316 points. Minnetonka placed second (188) and Eden Prairie finished fourth (140). Another Lake team, Wayzata, was seventh (139). Eden Prairie had a number of strong performances at state, led by sophomore Kira Zubar. She was first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4 minutes, 52.45 seconds. Eagle junior Ellie Suek was 10th in that event (5:06.72). She was sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:07.66). Zubar placed fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:50.28). Eden Prairie’s ninth-place 200 medley relay team had a time of 1:49.55. Members of that unit were Rachel

Adolescence comes with a one-time window for building bones that will stay stronger into adulthood and beyond. That’s why it’s so important for young teens to “build their bone banks with weight-bearing exercise and a diet rich in calcium. At least three cups of low fat or fat free milk plus other calcium-rich foods each day is a good rule. If you have children 11–15, make sure they take advantage of this critical time frame. They won’t get a second chance to build strong bones. A public service message from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
