People coming and going. That’s the Eden Prairie story for 2011. With school district changes, transportation planning, road construction, retirements and large-scale development plans, there was a mix of tectonic and imperceptible shifts in the city’s literal and figurative landscape this year. Here is a recap of some of those developments that made ink in 2011.
Supt. Krull exits In September, Eden Prairie School District Supt. Melissa Krull left the district after eight years as its chief, reaching a separation agreement with the Eden Prairie School Board after a tense year. Her exit came in time with the first year of elementary school boundary changes, which included breaking up some parts of the city to better balance free and reduced price lunch student populations. She had worked more than a year to put the board-approved plan in place. It had been met with resistance from some community members, including a group that threatened lawsuit and petitions asking for its recall as well as Krull’s resignation. Even though the plan was a flashpoint, there had YEAR IN REVIEW: TO PAGE 7

CITY NOTES Eden Prairie to receive free consultation Eden Prairie is one of eight communities across the country that will receive free neighborhood design consultation in 2012 from Global Green USA with the help of a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities Program. Over the next six months, four sustainability experts will conduct three-day visits to the communities and provide comprehensive recommendations for infrastructure and policy changes aimed at helping the communities build a future that is more resource-efficient, livable, healthy and environmentally responsible. Other winners: Lafayette, Ind.; Dearborn, Mich.; Greensboro, N.C.; Lakewood, Colo.; Oakland, Calif.; Louisville, Ky.; Philadelphia, Pa. “Cities are responsible for up to 70 percent of global warming pollution, but they can also be the laboratories for climate friendly solutions that save money, improve health and quality of life,” said Walker Wells, Director of Global Green USA’s Green Urbanism Program. Starting in February, the Global Green
to public health, and environmental protection. LEED-ND was developed by USGBC, Congress for the New Urbanism, and the Natural Resources Defense Council. The assistance to the eight communities
sustainability team will visit each of the communities with other planning and sustainability experts from around the country — including Rami and Associates, Farr Associates, the Agora Group and the United States Green Building Council. During the site assessment, the team will identify a neighborhood’s positive qualities, consult with community stakeholders in meetings and workshops, and identify major opportunities to improve the sustainability of each neighborhood. At the conclusion of the visit, the team will present recommendations for both physical and policy changes that may include street width reductions, ecological restoration, integrated energy and water infrastructure, new standards for in-fill and transit-oriented development, or zoning code revisions to allow for urban agriculture or mixed-use development. The sustainability experts evaluating the communities will use the LEED for Neighborhood Development standard, a nationally recognized method for creating neighborhoods that are walk-able, bikeable, resource-efficient, and equitable. Benefits of LEED-ND neighborhoods can include lower municipal operations costs, reduced infrastructure costs, increased use of alternate transportation, improvements
will be made possible by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Sustainable Communities under the Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities Program.

Long-time EP school board member ends tenure Carol Bomben’s 16 years on the board end with state award BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS After 16 years, Carol Bomben is leaving her Eden Prairie School Board seat. Though her school board duties end with the new year, she will not give up all her community-oriented service. “I’m still involved, and I think I just need to play a different role,” Bomben said after her last school board meeting Dec. 13. During the meeting, Boardmember John Estall offered highlights from Bomben’s contributions to the school district and other organizations. Bomben has served in many capacities, Estall said, including each officer position for the school board, and she served as chair in 2011. She has also served on every one of board’s standing committees throughout her 16 years on the school board. With her experience, she’s been a great resource for the school board, offering historical perspective, educational theory and legislative help, Estall said. Bomben has also served on the Association of Metropolitan School Districts, the Minnesota School Board Association and is on the District 287 Board of Education and the Minnesota
State High School League. She also serves on the Eden Prairie Foundation. And, she has been part of the Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools. And, the Rotary Club. And, others unmentioned. “I’ve actually got a long list,” she said after the meeting. Through all that work, her connections are the most impressive, Estall said. “It never fails Bomben to amaze me how many people know and care about Carol,” Estall said. Out of all the accomplishments coming out of Eden Prairie High School, she is proud of what students and teachers accomplish. Seeing students take part in all the sports, marching band concerts and many other activities is what resonates the most. “To me, the highlight is always watching the accomplishments of kids,” she said. “That part’s wonderful.” Eden Prairie is a fabulous school district that’s put together different than others, especially considering it has one big high school that meets the needs of many
different students, she said. Another highlight is seeing kids come in at Kindergarten and graduating high school in Eden Prairie. They each have a distinctive look in their eye. Kindergartners have the, “Oh my gosh” look as they come into a classroom for the first time, she said. High school students, leaving their final Eden Prairie School District classrooms, have more of a “what do I do next?” look on their face, Bomben said. She’s had three daughters go through those eye-opening moments, and she was proud to hand them each a diploma from Eden Prairie High School. “So, that’s huge,” she said. Next year, she is confident the school board will select a strong superintendent, and she hopes the school board can get a handle on the governance process. Around 10-15 years ago, before governance was adopted, the school board would receive information about the district’s day-to-day operations rather than student results, she said. The school board oversees district operations now, but she hopes there are more conversations about what students are doing in the schools; monitoring policies, as the board does now, is different than analyzing, she said. “I don’t think we’re exactly where we need to be, but I think it’s in a refinement process,” Bomben said. “I trust that the new board will keep figuring
that out.” The school board seems poised to articulate what it does and does not support, and she hopes it will build a “positive, constructive future” toward those specified goals. That would be in best interest of kids and the community – it’s harder to build and constructive than it is to tear something down, she said, and constructing positive goals is something she would like to see the new school board focus on.
Prairie School District’s search firm that was hired to facilitate the superintendent search process. The public will have two chances to meet with School Exec Connect, the district’s superintendent search firm. It will give residents a chance to help determine the challenges, strengths and goals of the
district and share what characteristics or skills they would like to see in a new superintendent.
– 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, in the Eden Prairie High School East Commons, 17185 Valley View Road Community members may also give feedback by accessing a survey that will be available on the district website, edenpr.org, through Jan. 18. All replies of the survey will be confidential.
State award Bomben was also named to the 2012 All State School Board, which is the Minnesota School Board Association’s most prestigious awards, according to a school district release. Bomben was one of four members chosen for the award this year. “Board members are nominated by superintendents, fellow board members, parents or community members for their outstanding contributions to public education,” a school district statement said. “There are nearly 2,300 school board members in Minnesota.” Criteria for the award includes MSBA training, strong leadership, communication skills, visionary thinking, demonstrated concern for students, staff and stakeholders. She will be honored during the MSBA’s annual Leadership Conference in January.

Waiting until New Year’s to make resolutions is bad form Self-improvements know no time of year Happy (almost) New Year! Aside from the proverbial party, the second biggest tradition in transitioning to a New Year is the New Year’s resolution. In grade school, I was instructed by my teachers to make a resolution each December for the upcoming New Year. My resolutions were typically family-related: “I will be nicer to my sister” or “I will try to heed my parents instructions before their fifth command.” When those scholastic mandates ceased, so did my yearly resolutions. It’s not that I don’t endeavor to make self-improvements or help others or complete any

other altruistic task as a selfsatisfactory exercise. The idea of assigning an arbitrary date to become a better person always struck me as odd in nature. If I needed an uptick in my moral fiber, by God, I got right on it. I understand that with a new year can come a fresh start. I get that. I really do. But, clichés such as “why put off what you can do today?” and “strike while the iron is hot” are actually quite applicable in this instance. I hearken back to the months preceding my impending marriage last year. It had become evident to me that I had not lost
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Union elections could be helpful To the editor: I respectfully differ strongly with Rep. Jenifer Loon and Kirk Stensrud regarding union worker elections (“Daycare provider unionization, election process bad for Minnesota,” Dec. 15). As a retired printing pressman, my union contract always provided a fair
living wage, and my wife never had to work. We raised eight children here in Eden Prairie. There was not the need for day care then, which is a sad commentary on how our country has evolved in an economic downward spiral. Republicans don’t seem to realize this hurts them too, with less middle class spending. I feel sorry for representatives Loon and Stensrud for being so myopic. Jack Steinmetz Eden Prairie
any of the 10-15 pounds I gained in college in the three years since my graduation. With my marriage six months away, I decided it would behoove me to do something about that extra luggage for our photographer’s (and wife’s) sake. I lost five pounds in three months by eating healthier and biking. But, two months before the wedding, my motivation waned and exercising became a chore. But even though I stopped biking, I was proud I made a goal and stuck to it for more than a week or two. The same won’t be true for many New Year’s resolution makers. This didn’t enter my thought process at the time, but waiting until the coming New Year to lose any weight for my wedding would have been worthless. My wedding would have come and gone and I would be likely packing on more pounds,
as I’ve been told happens after marriage (It’s true). This advice is coming from a chronic procrastinator. As of the date of writing this column, Dec. 22, I have not yet bought my wife a Christmas present. (Does she really need more than one blender?) That was a joke, by the way. I would ask for your suggestions for a Christmas gift for my wife, but I shouldn’t set the precedent of exchanging gifts belatedly. Make goals and make them often. I’m not even suggesting that you shouldn’t make a New Year’s resolution if your heart is set on it. But, realize there are 364 other days a year that are resolution-lonely. The point is, putting off goals or resolutions is good for no one, even if you want to impress your friends and family with the results of the Shake Weight you got for Christmas.

Year in review FROM PAGE 1 been other signs of discontent. A petition called for a one-year contract renewal instead of threeyear agreement in 2009 and a June mid-year performance review indicated she had not met goals set for her in a November 2010 performance. “We feel meaningful and necessary collaboration has not improved,” the summary statement from the June performance review said. “In addition the board’s governance policies have not been fully internalized by the organization.” A month later, Krull announced she would step down after the 2011-2012 school year. That announcement was also a month before her contract negotiations would begin. Within the two weeks following Krull’s announcement that she would step down, the school board looked into ending her contract early, a proposition that she accepted and was finalized by mid-September.
For the separation, Krull will receive $100,000, according to the agreement. As part of the transition, the school board took a more active role than usual in hiring the district’s head of communications, Bob Noyed, a position left vacant in July. Noyed was hired shortly before the board chose former Chanhassen Superintendent Jon McBroom to fill in as superintendent until the end of June 2012. McBroom has joined the district with a reputation for collaboration and communication skills, premiums in the boards’ search for a full-time superintendent as well. In December, the school board selected School Exec Connect, a search firm that includes former Twin Cities Metropolitan area superintendents. That search for a more permanent replacement is expected to begin in January, when new school board members will take their seats. The school board election was another big story in 2011. BEEP is elected Although reasons for higher voter turnout than normal can’t be pinned down, the elementary school boundary changes and other district changes likely brought more people to the offyear polls than usual. There were 5,170 Eden Prairie voters who turned out for the 2011 general election, far more than the 2009 election, and many of them were apparently looking for a change in the district’s direction. From the candidate filing period in August up until Election Night, there was a strong backing for four candidates in particular, Karla Bratrud, Dave Espe, incumbent John Estall and incumbent Holly Parker. They were given the acronym BEEP from supporters. And, all four were elected. “I think in the end, the group support turned out to be more of a benefit than we kind of thought it might be,” said candidate and former school board member Tim Fox. The election came in conjunction with elementary school boundary changes and grade changes, implemented this fall. It also came while the school board was reaching a mutual separation agreement with former Supt. Melissa Krull. While campaigning, the four candidates said they would be open to reconsidering the elementary school changes, and any changes to the new school structure would have to be based on a sound planning process. People have been active and involved in the district, Espe said, and many have been upset with the planning process behind the recent elementary school boundary and K-6 changes. Although much attention was given to the elementary school changes, all eight candidates also addressed finances, governance policy, communication and other topics. The school board will also be addressing declining enrollment trends. The district lost an estimated 300 students during 2011-2012 school year, compared to the previous year. “It’s our job as board members to listen to (residents) and do what we need to do to bring Eden Prairie back to the top school district,” Espe said after election results came in. “ ... I’m excited to go to work for them.”

Light rail a thumbs up In September, the Federal Transmission Authority gave the Metropolitan Council a green light for an early but important step in the Southwest Corridor Light Rail Transit project’s progression. The FTA sent the Met Council a letter saying it could go ahead with preliminary engineering, an initial design phase that could take two years to finish and cost an estimated $93 million, said Mark Fuhrmann, New Starts program director for the Met Council. Fuhrmann said he has been part of eight New Starts projects in his 26year career, and the preliminary engineering approval is the first big step. The light rail project, which would run through Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Hopkins and St. Louis Park and link with the Central Corridor line in Minneapolis, is one of only 11 or 12 projects nationwide that have reached the preliminary engineering phase, Fuhrmann said. During preliminary engineering,
the Met Council and other planning groups will complete about 30 percent of the design phase and have several facets. It will finalize station placement and design plans. It will include refined cost estimates, project benefits and impacts, finalize management plans and secure final funding sources. Down the line, if the preliminary engineering is completed to the FTA’s satisfaction, it could approve the final design phase for the estimated $1.25 billion railway. Construction could begin by 2014, and Fuhrmann said completion estimates have been late 2017 to early 2018. Fuhrmann said he thinks the project will be completed in early 2018. If completed, the Southwest LRT would become part of a growing regional rail landscape, with the Hiawatha Corridor LRT from Minneapolis to The Mall of America, the Northstar Corridor stretching from Big Lake to Minneapolis and the Central Corridor LRT, currently under construction. The Central Corridor, connecting Minneapolis and
St. Paul, would Southwest LRT.

Interchange kicks off Roads are a little further along than rail in Eden Prairie. The long awaited Highway 169 and Interstate 494 interchange reconstruction kicked into full gear in 2011. Work on the $125 million project began late last year, but a bulk of the project has taken place this year, which included freeway, frontage road, roundabout and bridge construction. The new interchange’s freeway system is expected to alleviated some congestion and prevent accidents for the estimated 175,000 motorists that go through the interchange each day. The interchange project will add six freeway-to-freeway ramps and six roundabouts in Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Edina. It will also eliminate three sets of stoplights at the end of Highway 169, turning the congestion-prone expressway into a freeway. YEAR IN REVIEW: TO PAGE 10

In May, after 30 years as the public works director for the city of Eden Prairie and 40 years in the industry, Gene Dietz retired. His jobs and roles have grown with the city’s population and development over the past 30 years, and having a chance to be a part of all the infrastructure developments that come with a fast-growing city have been a privilege,
he said. That’s why he didn’t call his retirement a relief. “Relief wouldn’t be the way to say it, because this has been - I like telling people I have one of the 10 best jobs in the state of Minnesota. ... For a civil engineer, Eden Prairie has been, without a doubt, one of the best places to work in.” Part of that city development includes an efficient, experienced staff with a “participatory form of management.” “The experience for Eden Prairie is not walking out the door,” Dietz said. “
… It’s just one part of it, and there’s some very good people left behind.” In July, Robert Ellis took over the vacated post. Ellis came from South Dakota, where he was public works director for Rapid City.
Getschow joins the city Hopkins City Manager Rick Getschow was officially hired as Eden Prairie’s new city manager in February and he started the new position in late March. YEAR IN REVIEW: TO NEXT PAGE

ney Anthony Edwards said the ruling and situation is “very unusual with such a serious crime.” There are people with mental illness convicted of crimes, but in this case, Richardson didn’t realize what he was doing at the time, something concluded by three experts. Having one psychologist find that is rare, he said, much less three. “It is a perfect consensus,” he said. Edwards said in April that since the incident July 31, 2010, Richardson has realized what happened and was “doing better” with medication he’s received.
Richardson has been placed in the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter, Minn., and a court hearing has been set for February 2012 to determine if he should be committed to the facility. “There hasn’t been a conclusion to that process, yet,” Edwards said in December.

Year in review FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Getschow, a Wisconsin native, had been the Hopkins city manager since 2005, and prior to that he was the Lauderdale city administrator and the Hector city administrator. Getschow said he loved working in Hopkins, and it was tough to leave, but Eden Prairie is one of those few prominent cities in the area that could attract anyone’s attention. In Hopkins, Getschow had implemented staff input processes, community outreach programs and a citizen’s academy, which were just some of his effective communication methods. During the city manager search process, Eden Prairie City Council members ultimately felt Getschow had a collaborative, energetic style that would suit the city well. City staff and a group of civic leaders shared the same sentiments after they met with two finalists and gave Getschow the final nod as well. “I think we got ourselves a great city manager,” Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens said after the motion to offer the job to
Getschow passed unanimously. The Eden Prairie position opened after former Eden Prairie City Manager Scott Neal began his new city manager role in Edina in November 2010. Since he started, Getschow has continued a staff blog, civic engagements and personable style akin to Neal.
Not guilty in murder case After a rare tragedy, an Eden Prairie man was found not guilty of a murder in July 2010. The ruling on Randel Richardson’s case occurred in April. Around a dozen family members and supporters, including his wife and parents, sat by as Hennepin County Court Judge Mark Wernick explained that Richardson was suffering from psychotic depression at the time of his infant son’s drowning last summer, and he did not understand the nature of what he was doing at the time, a conclusion that three psychologists had come to in three separate evaluations. A first-degree murder conviction would carry a sentencing of life in prison without parole, Wernick said during the trial. After the trial, Richardson’s attor-

Year in review FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Eden Prairie were approved in the summer and fall. The facility is expected to bring in development revenue and be a stop on the future Southwest Light Rail Line. The campus would be located off Shady Oak Road and Highway 62. It is expected to feature four buildings, each between 8 and 15 stories high, and three parking ramps with around 6,500 parking stalls. Approximately 57 acres of the 72acre property would be used for office structure development. An additional 15 acres would be set aside for public and semi-public use. “This is a good time to build,” UHG’s Senior Director of Development Dennis Spaller said during a presentation to the city council, “a good time to hire, to create jobs, to create value, to be efficient, to support the community, the schools, the infrastructure and to optimize space for our employees who can increase their operating efficiency and help people live healthy lives.” According to planners, the site could be developed enough to have space for 2,500 people by 2013, another 2,500 people by 2015 and the site

could be fully developed by 2016. The first phase of the project will include construction of a parking ramp, and two office towers, both eight stories tall. The second phase will consist of another parking ramp along with a 15-story tower on the south side of the lot. The final construction phase will be close to the Southwest Light Rail stop, on the east side of site. That construction will include the fourth tower and another parking structure adjoining that.
Andersons retire This year, the city saw two prominent church leaders retire after long tenures. The Rev. Rod Anderson of St. Andrew Lutheran Church retired in May after 34 years, and The Rev. Leith Anderson recently retired after 35 years of service. “Pastor Rod,” as he is known, helped the church grow from its infancy to some 10,000 congregates in two locations. In that time, he has not only served his congregation, but the community, as founding board president for the area food shelf and emergency services nonprofit, PROP. He served as president for 24 years. He also left his chair of the board posi-
tion for the Eden Prairie Foundation. He was also a long-time Rotary Club member and Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce member. He also helped expand the Job Transition Networking Session 24 years ago. The group meets every Wednesday at the church, and May 11 was his last. At those meetings, people can find contacts for businesses, listen to speakers and connect with other job seekers. The group continued once Rod Anderson left. Jim Schimelpfenig, a church administrator and member for 32 years, and others have continued organizing the group. Leith Anderson also has strong philanthropic ties to the community. He will continue to serve as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, a post he has held twice – most recently having taken the position after the resignation of former president Ted Haggard in 2006. Leith Anderson expects to have a continuing relationship with Wooddale, as pastor emeritus or a similar role. “It’s the right time,” Leith Anderson said of his decision to step down. “The church is healthy, happy and strong … we’re in a good place. Building off strength is a good thing.”

The foundation provides financial and quality-of-life assistance to hundreds of families of children battling cancer.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows
verses replacing windows. Updating your basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-839-2239.

Edina Swim Club gets first dibs on city pool access City council sets policy for priority access over Eden Prairie squad BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Edina Swim Club will get priority access to the Edina Aquatic Center beginning in summer 2013. The Edina City Council voted unanimously Tuesday, Dec. 20, to reaffirm the swim club’s position as the official youth association for the sport in Edina, and directed staff to draft a policy for the municipal pool granting priority access to the official association if it maintains at least 75 percent resident membership. “We do this as a city because we ask that these groups fulfill the need for these athletics within our community,” Councilmember Ann Swenson said. “As part of that, we offer them the ability to get the fields, the pool, the rinks that they need to do that.”
The decision came following a request from the Edina Swim Club for two additional hours at the aquatic center to accommodate growing numbers in summer 2012. The requested time slot has been used by the Eden Prairie-based Aquajets Swim Team for nearly a decade. While the city already has a policy in place giving other official youth athletic associations priority use of city gyms, outdoor fields and hockey rinks, Park and Recreation Director John Keprios said similar policies did not exist for the aquatic center or other enterprise facilities, including the ice arena and golf course. The Edina Park Board heard the Edina Swim Club’s request in November but opted not to adopt a use policy for the pool that would have given the Edina Swim Club priority. It instead directed staff to decide how to allocate hours this summer while it developed a policy for implementation the following year. Absent a policy, Keprios said at the
time, each club would keep its existing practice time for summer 2012. In summer 2011, the Edina Swim Club practiced 6-9:30 a.m. and the Aquajets 9:3011:30 a.m. before the aquatic center opened to the general public. The Edina Swim Club appealed the decision, arguing it had an established history in the city dating back to 1957 and was recognized as the official youth association for swimming. In 2005, Edina formed a Youth Sports Task Force to address issues around access to facilities. The task force recommended each sport has one recognized association, and that those associations maintain 90 percent residency, which they all did at the time, including the Edina Swim Club. The council subsequently adopted the policy giving priority access to city gyms, fields and rinks to associations that maintain the 90 percent Edina resident threshold. The Edina Swim Club has since gone to 75 percent Edina residents. The Aquajets is comprised of about 25 per-
cent Edina residents, according to city staff. Council members said they were comfortable setting the pool policy at 75 percent, since the same standard was used when the other policy was established. At Councilmember Joni Bennett’s request, staff will also reexamine youth sport association policies for possible simplification and standardization. Keprios said for summer 2012, the Aquajets will retain their practice time. The city entered a contract with the Aquajets for hours following the park board decision in November. He said that contract could not be broken, but in future summers, the Edina Swim Club will have right of first refusal for use of the pool outside of regular public hours, Keprios said. The Aquajets have held summer practices at the pool since forming in 2002. The team trains the rest of the year at its own indoor facility, the Aquajets Aquatic Center, in Eden Prairie.

South metro women launch nanny placement business Business’ reach extends beyond Dakota County BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS A more personable and hands-on approach is the goal of two south metro women who just started a nanny placement agency. Rosemount resident Sarah McComb and Shara Schmidt of Eagan officially started Hand in Hand Nanny Agency, 14116 Dearborn Path, in Rosemount on Dec. 1. Between the two, they have 13 years of experience in the field, which often was not the best experience due to a lack of communication by the agencies for which they had worked. For this reason, as well as being their own bosses, McComb and Schmidt were prompted to launch their placement service along nannies already serving in areas across the metropolitan area. Within one week of opening, McComb and Schmidt already have a database filled up with what they described as qualified and passionate nannies. The two also managed to start Hand in Hand Nanny Agency with minimal costs and had success in getting their webpage to the top of major search engines, according to the two new entrepreneurs. But all of this work were steps to get them in the position in which they want to be – an opportunity to demonstrate the major difference between their agency and others in the field. “We genuinely believe that we can offer something different to the market that we are targeting compared with the current companies in our field,” Schmidt said. “We both had great relationships not only with the children that we have provided care for but also their parents.” The women are also the only employees of the agency, which provides another benefit for customers. “We are hands on 100 percent of the time,” Schmidt said. “We know all of our clients who come through our doors.” The hands-on approach, according to both women, is an area of the industry that is much needed. According to Schmidt, she didn’t see the owners of agencies she had worked for nearly enough, which left her the only option of inquiring about past, present and future positions with staff members who didn’t always have the answers. Schmidt added that she and McComb stay in frequent contact with

“We are like best friends now,” Schmidt said, adding they had talked about starting their own placement agency if they could make it more personable. “We wanted to work with the kids and to help families out.” Hand in Hand places its nannies with children who are pre-kindergarten through 3 years of age. Right now their youngest client is 10 months old. As part of the placement process, Schmidt and McComb perform inhome consultations to get a feel for the families, with the purpose of locating the best possible match after searching their database of available nannies. “We both want to be hands on with the families, or we don’t feel right placing a nanny or family with each other without first getting to know them.” The agency preferably likes to keep around 20 vetted nannies in its database at all times and is always looking for more. Since starting the business, McComb and Schmidt have been interviewing around 10 individuals a week, but this ranges from time to time, NANNIES: TO PAGE 21

Memorial FROM PAGE 1 grounds of the state capitol,” said Marty Scheerer, Edina Fire Chief and president of the Minnesota State Fire Department Association. “The memorial will be completed in time for the commemoration of the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial Week in October 2012. … This was a joint effort by all the firefighters across the state, the business community across the state and the public.”
Chanhassen Mayor Tom Furlong said the city lost firefighter Mick Wiborg in 1998, and he thanked those who donated their time, effort and donations for the fitting memorial. “Being a firefighter requires a significant commitment, from the individual as well as their families,” Furlong said on Wednesday. “And, often this commitment leads to multiple generations of … families serving as firefighters. “The department itself often becomes a second family for many of its members. So when any department loses one of its members, all of that

department’s members, their families and the entire community often feels the loss, as though it was one of their own family members.” Some of those family members of perished firefighters were also in attendance Wednesday morning. Mary O’Rourke, daughter of Jim Spillane who died while on duty June 16, 1955, said her father’s name was recently added to the firefighter memorial after a former neighbor contacted her to say her father’s name was not included in a list of Minnesota firefighters who had died in the line of duty. “This has meant a lot to my brother Mike and I, and my family, my kids and my granddaughter,” she said. Her mother became a widow at age 30; Mary O’Rourke was only four years old, and her brother Mike was two years old when their father died, she said. By meeting the Dec. 31 deadline to raise the $600,000, the foundation should be able to open the memorial Oct. 7, 2012, which falls on the national firefighter memorial week. The statue honors 194 Minnesota firefighters who have given their lives since 1881. The new memorial on state capitol grounds will be larger and more accessible than the statue that currently sits near the baggage claim area at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. It was moved to the baggage claim area about 20 years ago, from a more public and accessible portion of the airport. “It was a good sort of large space, and very public place to have this sculpture,” foundation president and Eden Prairie Fire Chief George
Esbensen said when the fundraising effort was underway. After the airport got pressed to have more revenue-generating space and security measures tightened, the sculpture was moved. Now, the foundation can “claim a more sacred ground” for a memorial, Esbensen said, which would be more accessible to the public, on a southern portion of the state capitol property in St. Paul. The memorial would provide enough space for large gatherings and up-close viewings of the statue. A new architectural enclosure would house the statue, in the middle of a walking area. That area would be adjacent to a wall listing all the fire departments in Minnesota. The enclosure will be made of weathering steel columns that rust to a certain point, and then the rust will protect the metal, said Glenn Waguespack, the senior architect who led the memorial’s design for architectural firm Leo A. Daly. Each column represents a year when a firefighter died while on duty, Waguespack said, and the names of those who have died will be engraved on the columns. Even though the goal for the memorial has been reached, the fire service is still accepting donations. Those donations will fund education scholarships for firefighters’ children and spouses. Nannies FROM PAGE 18 Schmidt said. A part of their process to ensure that each placement is beneficial to the clients, nannies, and the agency, McComb and Schmidt perform background and reference checks. And, before sending a nanny to any home,
the two women have a policy of first visiting with families who request their services. “We want to make it worth their and our time while we are there, Schmidt said. “That way we can see their home and make sure it’s a safe home. We don’t want to send our nannies anywhere we haven’t been ourselves. Safety is our number one concern. Currently, the business has nannies
serving such metropolitan area communities as Blaine, Elk River, Lakeville, Farmington, Anoka, Inver Grove Heights, and even Hammond, Wisc. In other words, the business has not set any limits or boundaries in its attempt to appeal to all in and outside of the Twin Cities. According to McComb, many online nanny websites exist. In her opinion, which she bases on her experience working with other agencies, she said
many of these services don’t know a lot about the families they are serving. McComb and Schmidt aim to eliminate that aspect, at least with Hand in Hand, by keeping frequent contact with families and nannies that are under their watch. “[Nannies] play a huge role in the kids’ lives, McComb said. “It’s good to keep the relationship and the contact. Info: 952-212-8102 or 952-412-0971.

U of Maryland-bound Schmit played key role in team’s championship
Former Eden Prairie High School and American Legion baseball standout Blake Schmit has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Maryland in the fall of 2012.
BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie has been a hotbed for producing championship baseball teams and all-state caliber players during the last decade. And that trend continued in 2011. Eden Prairie has appeared in seven state baseball tournaments and won two championship and two runner-up trophies in the past 10 years. Eden Prairie has excelled on the American Legion baseball level as well. EP won the World Series title last summer and placed second the previous year. Shortstop Blake Schmit was an integral part of Eden Prairie’s success in the past two World Series tournaments. The smooth-fielding and consistent-hitting Schmit helped his team become SunCurrent newspaper’s 2011 Eden Prairie Sports Story of the Year. Eden Prairie defeated Tupelo, Miss., 5-4 in 13 innings Aug. 16 in the World Series Legion finals at Shelby, N.C. Eden Prairie won the Central Plains Region title before advancing to the nationals. Eden Prairie lost its first World Series game before winning five straight in the double-elimination tourney. Eden Prairie finished with a 43-8 record. Major League Baseball invited the Eden Prairie American Legion team coached by Scott Hackett and Mike Halloran to be their guests during the first two games of the World Series between the Cardinals and Rangers in St. Louis. EP’s championship team was honored before Game Two of the Series. Schmit and three teammates were selected to the Legion World Series alltournament team. Those other honorees were first baseman Tyler Peterson, second baseman Tony Skjefte and outfielder David Belusky. Pitcher Adam Bray and several other EP players could easily have been chosen to the all-tournament team as well.

Karissa Olsen Schmit signs Schmit would like to create more memorable moments in his baseball career and join the list of many other Eden Prairie baseball program graduates who eventually played at the pro level. Nate Hanson, Neil Wagner, Madison Boer, Cole DeVries and Justin Milo are some of the recent products of EP baseball to compete professionally. Schmit has signed to attend the University of Maryland next school year and hopes to continue to improve his baseball skills enough to eventually be signed by a Major League Baseball organization.
Schmit started at shortstop last spring for the Des Moines Area Community College baseball team. He batted .364 in junior college ball before averaging in that range for the EP Legion team last summer. The 6-1, 180-pound Schmit will compete again for Des Moines Area CC this spring before enrolling at Maryland next fall. “One of my goals has been to play pro baseball,” said Schmit. “I have been fortunate to be part of Eden Prairie’s great baseball tradition. “I received excellent coaching from SCHMIT: TO PAGE 25

Eden Prairie wrestlers pin hopes on returning state trio BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Led by three-time state tournament veteran Sam Brancale, Eden Prairie’s wrestling team is off to an impressive start. The Eagles opened the season with a first-place finish in the Osseo Invite Dec. 3 and then placed second at the Trinity Invite Dec. 10. Eden Prairie has added several dual meet triumphs after competing in those invitational tournaments. Sam Brancale, a senior, has begun the season with a 10-0 record competing in several lower weight classes. He was a state champion at 103 during his sophomore season and placed third at 119 a year ago while posting a 38-2 record. “Sam has a great work ethic and is dedicated to the sport,” said Eden Prairie cohead coach Tom Gaston. “He loves wrestling and is always trying to get better.” Sam Brancale will probably wrestle at 126 in section competition as a senior. Sam Brancale shares the Eden Prairie captaincy with 145-pound junior Matt Gribben and 138-pound junior Chase Monger. Freshman Ben Brancale has been wrestling at several lower weight classes. He competed but didn’t place at 112 in last year’s state AAA tournament. Also back with state experience is 195-

He is a team tricaptain.(Submitted photo) pound Melvin De-Souza. “Our team is dedicated and hungry to do well this season,” said Gaston, who shares coaching duties with Tom Gruhlke. “We lost to Hopkins in the Section 2AAA finals a year ago. “This season, Prior Lake, Shakopee and Eden Prairie should be the section
title favorites.” Eden Prairie’s top records belong to Sam Brancale (10-0), Ben Brancale (8-0), De-Souza (10-2), Erik Phillips (8-2), Gribben (6-2) and Monger (6-2). Chaska/Chanhassen defeated Eden Prairie 42-26 Dec. 6. Sam Brancale (145), De-Souza (195) and Steven Adams (220)
pinned their opponents. Ben Brancale won 9-3 at 126 and Gribben recorded a 20-5 technical fall at 160. Eden Prairie participated in a triangular meet Dec. 15 at Glencoe. The Eagles defeated the host team 42-30. Eden Prairie had a pin from Jerry Bilse (160). Bryant Felipe (132), Phllips (138), Omar Marawan (145), De-Souza (195) and Farhan Mohamed (220) received forfeits. Ben Matsui won a 7-5 decision at 126 pounds. Travis Cripe earned a 3-1 win at 285. Eden Prairie also defeated New Prague 52-24 in the triangular. Tim Ford (113), Sam Brancale (132), Phillips (138), Monger (152), Gribben (160) and De-Souza (195) provided pins. Christopher Timm won 7-6 at 106. Ben Brancale garnered a 14-5 major decision at 126. Andy Do had a 6-3 win at 170 and Cripe received a forfeit at 285. Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial (Wis.) defeated Eden Prairie 44-23 in the final round of the triangular meet. Ben Brancale achieved a pin at 126 and Sam Brancale won a 5-3 decision at 132. Monger recorded a technical fall at 152. De-Souza had a pin at 195. Eden Prairie split a pair of matches in the Olivia tournament. BOLD defeated the Eagles 43-23, but EP beat Dawson-Boyd 36-33.
Top local sports story of 2011 Eden Prairie’s American Legion baseball team created one of the top 2011 local sports stories by winning the American Legion World Series title last August. Eden Prairie players, coaches and team officials were honored and presented with a plaque from Major League Baseball representative Joe Torre before the second game of the World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers in October at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The national American Legion organization lined up the trip and paid Eden Prairie’s travel expenses to attend the first two World Series games. (Submitted photo)

EPHS leads Challenge Cup standings after fall season Eden Prairie High School is leading the way for the 2011-12 Minnesota State High School League Challenge Cup title in Class 3A. The MSHSL created the Challenge Cup program in 2003 to recognize and reward league-member schools for excellence in athletics and fine arts. Schools earn points for their success in post-season play. The school earning the most points at the end of the year receives the traveling Challenge Cup title in its class. There are three classes – A, AA and AAA.

The Eagles went on to beat Wayzata 13-3 in the Prep Bowl. Eden Prairie leads the Minnesota State High School League’s Challenge Cup standings after the fall sports season.
Eden Prairie is a five-time Challenge Cup winner. The Eagles have a 25-point lead over Edina after fall sports tournaments were completed. Eden Prairie won three fall state championships in boys soccer, volleyball and football. Eden Prairie also had individual state girls swimming champions that earned 47 of the school’s 259 Challenge Cup points. The 2012 Challenge Cup winners will be announced in late June after the spring tournaments are completed. – Compiled by Greg Kleven

SHORTS Davidson picks Stanford Eden Prairie High School senior offensive tackle Nick Davidson has committed to play football at Stanford University next fall. Davidson narrowed his college choices to Ohio State, Oregon, Clemson and Colorado before choosing to attend Stanford. Davidson moved to Eden Prairie from North Carolina last summer when his father Jeff became Vikings offensive line coach. Davidson started at tackle for the Eagles until suffering a season-ending ankle injury in the state quarterfinals.

Peterson started at first base after playing for North Iowa CC last spring. And Belusky manned the center field position after spending last spring in the Minnesota State, Mankato baseball program.
