Study: Prescription drug abuse on rise for county arrestees

BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS

BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS A 2011 study shows more than half of adult males booked into Hennepin County Jail tested positive for illegal drug use, according to the county sheriff. The Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program (ADAM II) found that 68 percent of men booked into the county jail had taken at least one illegal drug prior to their arrest, according to the sheriff ’s office. The federal Office of National Drug Control Policy generates the study, but an office spokesman said it has not made preliminary 2011 results public, so it could not verify the specific numbers the sheriff ’s office has already released. The most popular drug among those entering jail was marijuana, with 53 percent of arrestees having the drug in their system, the sheriff ’s office reported. Even though 1.5 percent of all arrestees had Oxycodone in their system, it’s most prevalent among the

Prescription drug abuse is on the rise nationwide. A 2011 study shows that 5.6 percent of men 21 years old and younger who were booked into Hennepin County jail had the painkiller medication Oxycodone in their system, the sheriff’s office reported. Of men 21 years old and younger booked into jail, 5.6 percent had the painkiller medication Oxycodone in their system prior to arrest, the sheriff ’s office reported. The use of heroin and Oxycodone is

on the rise among young arrestees, according to county sheriff Rich Stanek, while cocaine and methamphetamine use has declined.

Twin Cities restaurant mogul Tony Nicklow has been inducted into the Minnesota Hospitality Hall of Fame. The Minnesota Restaurant Association presented the award to Nicklow Nov. 21 at the Lafayette Club in Minnetonka Beach. “We had an enormous turnout. … There was hardly a dry eye in the audience,” said restaurant association Executive Vice President Dan McElroy. Nicklow has made his mark on the metro area since emigrating from Greece in the early 1960s, arriving with what he said was nothing but the clothes on his back and $3 in his pocket. His restaurant success, going on five decades, is rooted in family.

EP schools will slow STEM expansion to other grades To ensure STEM is well implemented, Eden Prairie School District staff is going to slow down its planned expansion to other grades. The Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics curriculum change began this year in 19 fifthgrade classrooms. In April, administrators were thinking they could expand STEM into all fifth-grade classrooms, fourth grade and sixth grade during the 2012-2013 school year. According to a Nov. 30 STEM update from administrators, engineering and science components will be introduced to other grades, but not to the extent they had originally planned. Executive Director of Educational Services Stephen West said they are slowing down on the fourth-grade implementation to make sure the STEM process is done right. “Right now, I want to stay focused

and make sure fifth and sixth grade is done correctly,” West said to the school board. It takes time to undertake the shift, he said, and he didn’t think it could be implemented in fourth grade with the right amount of vigor if it happens as soon as next year. In the 2012-2013 school year, all fifthgrade classrooms will instill all four STEM disciplines together, using teaching methods that encourage student inquiry, project learning and working with community experts. That’s what the 19 fifth-grade pilot classrooms are currently doing, but rather than implementing all of those techniques into fourth grade next school year, it will implement a couple of those techniques in K-4 classrooms, according to a comprehensive presentation from Elementary School Director of Teaching and Learning Janet Pladson. Those techniques will include engineering and science topics or “Nature

Eden Prairie School Board selects firm for schools’ chief search Final contract expected during Dec. 13 meeting BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Eden Prairie School Board has chosen a search firm to facilitate the hunt for a permanent superintendent. The school board made the final selection, Illinois-based School Exec Connect, during its Nov. 30 meeting. Minnesota associates working with

the search firm include retired Edina superintendent Kenneth Dragseth and retired Brooklyn Center schools superintendent Antoinette Johns, both partners with the firm. The firm has helped other area school districts find a superintendent, according to its website, including Wayzata Public Schools (Chace Anderson), Rochester Public Schools (Michael Munoz), Robbinsdale Area Schools (Aldo Sicoli), Richfield Public Schools (Robert Slotterback) and Anoka-

Hennepin School District (Denny Carlson). A subcommittee of the Eden Prairie school board made the final recommendation after receiving proposals from five out of the 11 firms it contacted. Boardmember Holly Parker provided an overview of the process and the search firm before the entire school board made its final, unanimous approval. The board met with representatives from the five firms in mid-November, according to Parker. “We had a really good process to get us a lot of information and get down to three firms,” Parker said. There were two firms with strong qualities, but School Exec Connect had the particulars pertinent to Eden Prairie, Parker said. Those particular qualities the board emphasized: an ability to engage with the community and staff; an ability to conduct a national search for candidates; understanding the role of governance policy in the process and willingness to make their search method flexible, Parker said. A lot of places had a canned process, Parker said, so they wanted to make sure a search firm could adjust to the Eden Prairie School District.

School Exec Connect is comprised of former superintendents, and it conducted a superintendent search for the Rochester Public Schools system, which has a diverse community and issues, Parker said. During that Rochester search, one of the firm members went to Rochester for an extra “engagement session with stakeholders,” Parker said, which added confidence to their selection. “We felt they really understood the value of community and staff involvement,” Parker said. A contract hasn’t been worked out, yet. Tuesday’s vote was to extend the offer to School Exec Connect. The final approval is expected at the Tuesday, Dec. 13, meeting. Jon McBroom, who retired June 30 from Shakopee schools after 11 years as its chief, stepped in as interim superintendent Nov. 1 after Melissa Krull’s departure in September. McBroom’s contract runs through June 30, 2012. The main thrust of the superintendent search is expected to begin next year, once the newly elected school board members take their seats. Joining the board for the first time will be Karla Bratrud and Dave Espe, along with reelected members John Estall and Parker.

To city and school elected officials: Thank you An elected official once apologized to me for not returning a phone call because she was visiting a family member who was battling cancer. The only appropriate response to that is, “What I called about doesn’t really matter. I wish you the best.” Did I say that? No, because I’m some jerk reporter who has to ask some question because I signed up to be on this end of the phone. She didn’t have to be on the other end. And she apologized. Local elected officials are not thanked enough. They spend a lot of time outside of their full-time jobs and away from families. They sort through issues that you don’t have to worry about. The majority of their time is spent doing thankless, unrecognized work. So, thank you. And thank you to your families. They’re paid, but it’s not much. Not in Eden Prairie, anyway. They have to communicate complicated processes without sounding like they’re being wishy-washy or hiding something.

PAUL GROESSEL Eden Prairie Community Editor

They know they might get quoted or misquoted in the newspaper at any time. They answer emails. They sit down for one-on-one conversations with people who want to talk about a concern. I don’t think they get many phone calls from people who want to have coffee just to say thanks or just to shoot the breeze. There’s usually a problem or topic that must be worked out. That goes for the press, especially. A lot of their elected duties are outside of the regular school board or city council meeting. They have subcommittees that come with the gig. They go to well-known, wellattended public events and notso-well-known events like a ribbon cutting or open house. When they make big decisions or a “what if ” happens, their schedule gets even more hectic – the city needs to hire a

new city manager; the school board needs to hire a new superintendent. Many people don’t even know who is in the respective seat and what the person in that chair is responsible for. That hiring process means finding a search firm, a selection process itself. Then, they have extra meetings with the search firm to set up more meetings to find out what the most important criteria in a candidate should be, and what are the most important functions and priorities of the city or schools before they can weed through all the applicants and choose who they’ll select for the first – first! – round of interviews ... See? You’re falling asleep already. You know what, though? We don’t care. We don’t think about that. We don’t think about what elected officials do on a daily or weekly basis. We don’t think about how much time it takes from their family. We just know where the city council will be when we want to complain about tax rates, our water bill or the city spending more money than it needed

on a lug nut that holds up a sign (which is probably too close to the road under the zoning code) at a public building. And you know what? They’ll let you come tell them about it. They invite it, the crazy people. We can do the same with the school board. In Eden Prairie, board members attend multiple events, are on a couple committees and often spend time looking up supplemental information on certain topics. They set aside times to have anyone come talk to the board about anything school related. No, we don’t have to agree with an elected official. Not every politician is the same; not everyone is as committed as another, and things aren’t always done with great intentions. Honest mistakes do happen. We should ask questions and make sure things are running as they should be. But, at the least, when we do question and pry it’s good to keep in mind how much time they put in and how little they’re recognized before firing off questions. Thanks for doing a thankless job.

Injecting new blood into the ‘Heart of the Zoo’ Phase one of Minnesota Zoo revitalization project completed this summer BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS People who went to the Minnesota Zoo this summer saw firsthand the culmination of years of planning for its “Heart of the Zoo” project. years will be surprised by the work done during the project’s first phase. The first phase had three components and cost $14 million, said Chris Gibbs, arts, community and education principal with HGA Architects and Engineers. The zoo and HGA began planning for the project nearly four years ago. It finished this past July after 16 months of construction. The main entrance was transformed from a concrete structure to a wood and stone building. The zoo added its now-popular penguin exhibit and its empty whale pools were re-used for a theater and community event space. Zoo guests will see the changes before they enter the grounds, said Gibbs, a Plymouth resident. This extension of the zoo outside the grounds is part of its mission. “It was a little aged based on how long the zoo’s been around,” said Gibbs of the concrete entrance. “It was built in the ’70s and was kept well, but it was just a little harsh and I think the zoo wanted to soften that a little bit and portray their brand of connecting people in the natural world out into the zoo.” The walk up to the entrance now has a more zoo-like feel, Gibbs said, thanks to new landscaping. Low-lying shrubs and prairie grasses – some native to Minnesota – line the walkways and lead zoo guests to the lower level entrance. “We added an awful lot of landscaping,” he said. “We really made that visitor experience a much better moment starting even out in the parking lot. It feels like you’re walking through a garden now, where before it was like walking on a side-

walk.” Bison and wolf sculptures outside the entrance have been huge attractions for photo opportunities for zoo guests, said Minnesota Zoo Director and CEO Lee Ehmke. “It starts to tell that zoo story even as people are waiting in line,” Gibbs added regarding the new sculptures. Secondly, the old theater was converted to the new Penguins of the African Coast exhibit, one of the most popular summer exhibits, said Ehmke. “For most people, the most notable change is the penguin exhibit,” he said. “We’ve never had penguins at the zoo. Kids can climb up on boulders and be nose-to-nose with the penguins on their beach. The penguins are certainly the new focus.” The location of the penguin exhibit, along with the remodeled entrance, has made navigating the zoo easier, Ehmke said. “It’s much clearer what the options are,” he said. “You can go immediately outdoors – left to Discovery Bay, right to the penguin [exhibits]. So, we’re bringing people right to the middle of the zoo.” The third part of the project converted two outdated and empty whale pools to house the zoo’s bird show and host community events. The whale pools had not been used since Discovery Bay opened in 1998, Ehmke said. Gibbs said he couldn’t recall who came up with the idea to re-use the abandoned whale tanks. Milio’s sandwich shop opens in Shorewood Owner hopes for Eden Prairie-type success BY CHRIS DILLMANN – SUN NEWSPAPERS A new but familiar to some sandwich joint has found a home in the South Lake area. Milio’s, located at 23480 Hwy. 7, in Shorewood near Cub Foods, is owned by Vic Moravec and his wife Diane, 17-year Excelsior residents. They have made this their second Milio’s store, opening their first in June 2008, in Eden Prairie. Leaving a 25-year career in advertising, Moravec says it was time for a change. “I thought, ‘I’m working this hard, I might as well work for myself,’” he said. Looking at a large variety of franchises, Moravec says Milio’s was just the fit for him. Struggling the first year to get adjusted, he soon understood this was the right move. His store in Eden Prairie has won store of the year honors the past three years. It’s all about customer service, says Moravec. Knowing their names and what sandwich they eat before they even

walk through the door makes all the difference, especially these days. “I love it all,” he said. “I like talking with the people and actually getting to know them well.” Moravac passes his enthusiasm to his employees. “My employees love to work here,” Moravec said. “When the customer walks through the door they can see that, and it just makes it a happy experience.” Milio’s began in Madison, Wis., in 1989, by founder and president Mike Liautaud. Owners are treated to a 250hour training program, and they get all the knowledge they need to run a successful store, he says. With 47 stores already around the Midwest, 25 additional Milio’s are planned through the next five years in the Twin Cities. Liautaud says it all comes down to what gave them their start. “It was a group of people who grew up with this business,” Liautaud said. “That’s truly the reason we are where we are today.” Moravec too says donating the day-

All roads lead Nik Lentz to the ‘Octagon’ Bloomington native will make his eighth appearance in the UFC Dec. 10 BY JARED HUIZENGA SUN NEWSPAPERS With one champion, four former champions and a combined 26 fight night bonus winners on the Dec. 10 Ultimate Fighting Championship card, diehard mixed martial arts fans have something to look forward to. The card will also include a fighter that should appeal to casual fans, the curious and those that take an interest in Minnesota sports and athletes. On that night, Nik Lentz, a Bloomington Jefferson graduate, Plymouth resident and former University of Minnesota wrestler will fight for the eighth time in the UFC against veteran Mark Bocek at UFC 140. Lentz’s path to mixed martial arts and the UFC started while he was still wrestling at the U. “The coaches were good, but I didn’t like the way they were training me,” he said. “I thought about wrestling internationally and then I talked with my dad about it and we decided to give mixed martial arts a try.” After his first fight, he knew that he’d made the right decision. “All of my natural abilities translated better to mixed martial arts than they did to

Mixed martial artist Nik Lentz works on honing his skills Saturday, Dec. 3, at The Academy in Brooklyn Center. Lentz is in the final days of training leading up to his fight with Mark Bocek Saturday, Dec. 10, at UFC 140. Lentz, a Plymouth resident and Bloomington Jefferson graduate, is unbeaten since joining the UFC in 2009. (Photos by Paul Groessel - Sun Newspapers) wrestling,” he said, adding that he’d always “messed around” with martial arts, including judo and Jiu-Jitsu to help him with his wrestling. Soon he gave up wrestling entirely and left college to start training and fighting full-time. Today he trains at The

Academy in Brooklyn Center, where the likes of Brock Lesnar, current Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad and former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk also train. The decision was one that was supported by his close

friends and family members, which, he said, is very important for a new fighter. “The support I got from my family and friends was huge,” he said. “There’s lots of money to be made in fighting, but it takes a long time to get there. “When you start out, you’re

literally making nothing, so their support – both emotionally and financially – was huge.” Between 2005 and late 2009, Lentz trained and fought mostly in regional shows, compiling a win-loss-draw record of 16-3-1. But despite the impressive record, he was having trouble making the jump to UFC, which is the premier mixed martial arts organization in the world. “I was trying to get in for a long time, but I didn’t have enough big wins,” he said. “The problem was a lot of the guys that would have been big wins for me would take the fight and then cancel it at the last minute because their trainers viewed me as too much of a challenge.” Then, two weeks before UFC 103, which was held Sept. 19, 2009, in Dallas, he got a call from the organization offering him a fight against Rafaello Oliveira. Lentz took the fight on short notice and walked away with a unanimous decision victory. Since that first fight, he has won four others and has mixed in a draw and a no-contest. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 2007 to find his most recent loss. Lentz comes into the Bocek fight with an overall professional record of 21-3-2 with 1 no-contest, which came in his last fight against Charles Oliveira in June. That fight, which earned Lentz and Oliveira each a $50,000 bonus for Fight of the Night, originally ended as a submission victory for Oliveira. LENTZ: TO PAGE 13

Lentz FROM PAGE 10 However, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission later changed the decision to a no-contest after it ruled that Oliveira had hit Lentz with knee to head while he was on the ground – a move that is illegal under unified mixed martial arts rules. Bocek comes into the fight with a record of 9-4, including a UFC record of 5-4. He has also twice been awarded with Submission of the Night – at UFC 124 last December and at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale in December 2009. “Mark Bocek is a guy that’s been around for a long time, but he’s a bit under the radar,” he said. “But he’s a very dangerous opponent and he’s not to be taken lightly.” Lentz said his training camp has gone really well and he’s hoping that as he progresses as a fighter, fans will get to see “the real Nik Lentz.”

Lightweight division Lentz fights in what is arguably the UFC’s most competitive division: lightweight – 155 pounds. Champion Frankie Edgar, who recently defended the title twice against Grey Maynard, headlines the division, which also features No. 1 contender Ben Henderson, Clay Guida, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, Kenny Florian, Nate Diaz and Sherk. Last fall the UFC made the division even stronger by merging World Extreme Cagefighting, which was also owned by UFC’s parent company Zuffa, into the UFC – Henderson, Pettis and Cerrone were all a part of that merger. When Zuffa purchased WEC in 2006, it eliminated the heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions. Within three years, the WEC’s welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight divisions were also folded, leaving the WEC with the lightweight division and other divisions for smaller fighters including bantamweight and featherweight. Not only did the merger provide the UFC with an influx of talent in its lightweight division, but it also provided options for lightweights that were fighting in an uncomfortable weight class or were looking for options. Those options included the addition of the bantamweight and featherweight divisions, which had never been a part of the UFC. Several fighters, including Florian and recent Lentz opponents Charles Oliveira and Tyson Griffin made the 10pound drop to featherweight. When fighters get on a losing streak, Lentz said, things kind of snowballed and some viewed a change as a way to

ignite or reignite their career. He, however, has no intention of following the others, and he believes in the long-run it can actually hurt a fighters chances. “There’s no reason for me to drop,” he said. “I’m winning and dropping a weight class isn’t an easy thing to do … it’s ignoring what the actual problem is.” Throughout his career, he has fought at light heavyweight, middleweight and welterweight. But it’s at lightweight, which is more than 20 pounds lighter than his normal “walking around” weight, where he feels most comfortable and has the greatest chance of success. While others might negotiate about who, when or where they fight, Lentz said he doesn’t do that … when they call and offer him a fight he says “yes.” “I’ve always fought tough guys,” he said. “I just need to keep winning and get onto the pay-per-views. Once that happens you get more notoriety and that’s when the title shots come.” While he wants that, right now he’s in no hurry because once he gets to the top, he plans on staying there for a long time. “Once I get there, I’m not going to want to let it go.” Like many UFC fighters, Lentz is a frequent Twitter user. You can follow him at @NikLentz.

awarding 10 points to the fighter they feel won the round and 9 points or fewer to the other fighter. Fighters are judged on components including ring control, striking and aggressiveness. Fights can also end before they reach a decision via submission, knock out or technical knock out. Fighters can verbally submit to the referee or more often they “tap out,” which means that when they’re stuck in a submission hold they physically tap their opponent to let him know they are submitting. Knockouts occur when a fighter is knocked unconscious by an opponent. Technical knockouts occur when a fighter is being hit

with punches, kicks, elbows or knees and can no longer mount a defense. Most organizations operate with a standard set of rules, many of which are in place to protect fighters, including no knees or kicks to a grounded opponent, no “soccer kicks” or stomps to the head of a grounded opponent and no “12-6” elbows.

UFC 140 Lentz can be seen competing Saturday, Dec. 10 in Toronto at 4:50 p.m. streaming live on Facebook. Visit ufc.com for links and details.

What is mixed martial arts? In simplest terms, mixed martial arts is a combat sport that combines elements of wrestling, boxing, kickboxing and different disciplines of martial arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, karate and Thai kickboxing (Muay Thai). The UFC is the premier MMA organization in the world and is owned by Zuffa, which also owns and operates Strikeforce. There are other national organizations out there including Bellator Fighting Championship, Shark Fights and Titan Fighting Championships in the United States and Dream in Japan. Fighters are grouped into weight classes. Currently, the UFC has seven primary classes. Fights take place in a ring or a cage, which can vary in design between promotions. The UFC utilizes an eight-sided cage, dubbing it the “Octagon.” Time limits for the fights also vary slightly between organizations, but a typical fight will consist of three 3minute rounds for nontitle and nonmain event fights. Title fights are five 5minute rounds. Recently, the UFC changed time limits on nontitle main event fights to five 5-minute rounds as well. Like boxing, MMA fights are scored on a 10-point must system, with judges

Marrow FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Donor Program, every year, more than 10,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma, and their best hope of a cure is a transplant. The Be The Match Registry provides access to 9 million potential donors and more than 185,000 umbilical cord blood units. The likelihood of finding a donor on the Be The Match Registry who is willing and able to help is estimated to range from 66 percent to 93 percent,

depending on race or ethnicity. Registration involves completing a health history form and giving a swab of cheek cells. Memorial Blood Centers will also conduct a blood drive at City Hall. Double red cell donations, which come from people with type O+, O-, A- or B-, are especially needed. Contact 651-3327172 or jolson@mbc.org to schedule a double red cell donation. Zoo FROM PAGE 8 from the zoo, HGA and exhibit designers present at a planning meeting, it was certainly collaboration. “It was one of those ‘Ah ha! moments, Gibbs said. “It’s safe to say it was a team effort because everyone was in the room. I’m sure of that. Future phases in the “Heart of the Zoo project are scheduled to include new exhibits, as well as moving the main entrance to the upper level parking area. Ehmke hopes that future projects will enhance its visitors’ trips beyond the parking lot. An idea a couple years from fruition includes a prairie exhibit along Zoo Boulevard. “We’d love it if you were seeing some bison up on the hill as you were coming in

looking for a place to park, Ehmke said. “Again, starting that zoo experience as soon as possible is our goal. Gibbs said he would love to work with the zoo on future phases of “Heart of the Zoo. He feels confident that HGA’s work on phase one was in line with the zoo’s mission. “I think the zoo is always looking at ways to connect animals in the natural world to people, Gibbs said. “I think this project frankly does that and increases their opportunity to do that. I think at the end of the days it’s allowing them to reach more people with their story. Ehmke said the project has transformed the Minnesota Zoo into a worldclass facility. “My feeling is that Heart of the Zoo has tipped the balance and most of the zoo is feeling new, and refreshed and state of the art. This is the project that brought us up to the level we wanted.

Drugs FROM PAGE 1 Young men have also had the biggest shift in drug use among all age groups. In the 2010 study, 3 percent of those 21 and younger had Oxycodone in their system, according to federal survey results. With the increase in prescription drug abuse has come a decrease in the use of cocaine and methamphetamine, according to the sheriff. The sheriff ’s office claims none of the youngest men in jail had either drug in their system, according to the 2011 preliminary results. A 2010 study found that 3.6 percent of those under 21 had cocaine in their system and 1.8 percent had taken methamphetamine prior to their arrest. Even though he could not speak to specific 2011 results, National Drug Control Policy spokesman Rafael Lemaitre did say prescription drug abuse is on the rise in the United States. It’s becoming an epidemic, he said, “and that’s not a phrase we use lightly here.” Of the 28,000 drug-related deaths per year, many of them are from prescription drug abuse, and 70 percent of abusers get the drugs from friends and family, Lemaitre said. That’s why federal authorities sponsored 4,000 “take-back” days across the country in October, where people can turn leftover prescription drugs to authorities, Lemaitre said. A new law that will allow local authorities and groups to run their own take-back programs is also expected to begin soon.

ADAM II survey methods For years the federal government has contracted ABT Associates to conduct the drug study. It began by surveying people booked into jails in 35 cities and metropolitan areas across the country. Working under the Office of National Drug Control Policy since 2006, 10 cities are canvassed with the drug study, according to Dana Hunt, who has overseen the study for ABT since 2000. The federal government won’t release final numbers until February because the preliminary numbers are based on

two quarters of the year, she said, and final numbers are calculated to represent the entire year. Tests take place within 48 hours of an arrest, since some drugs can leave the body after two days. So, surveys take place while men are being processed or shortly after they’re placed in jail, Hunt said. Men’s identities remain anonymous; their information is replaced with a barcode number on drug test samples and interview responses. Arrestees are asked about use of specific drugs, how they obtained them and other questions. Then they take a drug test to confirm what narcotics are in their system, Hunt said. A lot of men say they are happy to take be interviewed and take part in the study, Hunt said. “Why everybody always says that is – because they’re bored.” Processing can take hours, and there isn’t a lot to do. Plus, surveyors have candy bars. Countrywide, nearly 90 percent agree to participate, Hunt said. But, that doesn’t mean they tell the truth about their drug use. Even though drug-use patterns vary region to region, the admission of drug use is about the same for all regions tested, Hunt said. And, consistently, the more taboo a drug, the more people lie about using it. “[Responses are] quite different by drug, but almost the same everywhere,” Hunt said. Approximately 85 percent of people who tested positive for marijuana admitted to using it in previous 30 days, while approximately 40 percent of recent cocaine and heroine users confessed. Timelines also play into a willingness to admit drug abuse. Respondents are more likely to admit to abusing a drug within a year, but not days. “It’s hard to admit that you used heroine three days ago. It’s hard to admit you used cocaine three days ago. … There’s a wide range of shame associated with the drug use. Or unwillingness to say they did it,” Hunt said. The sheriff ’s office and Lemaitre said results from the studies serve as one component of the multiple resources used to create prevention efforts, policy and enforcement strategy. Full 2011 results are expected in February.

Right Way Painting Solutions Another summer has come and gone with winter here for the next several months. Many of us have been forced to put off inside projects for various reasons including economic hard times. Many of us have put off projects to save money in case things get worse. Based on the unemployment numbers, Minnesota’s unemployment is much lower than most states and has continued to improve over the last year. Many of us are in situations where our home value has decreased and it is hard to even think about selling our homes. Winter is a great time to do inside projects! Painting is one of the most cost effective ways to enhance the beauty of our homes. Painting the walls, ceilings and trim can dramatically change the appearance of our homes. Today’s paints do not leave odors that are unappealing. The best reason to paint in the winter is we are not as busy as we are spring, summer and fall. This gives you the opportunity to take advantage of our better pricing. I live in Richfield and many of the homes in the Richfield, Bloomington and Edina

areas are getting older and the wood work, windows and paneling are not in the best of shape. We can make these areas of your home look new with either painting or refinishing. Painting or refinishing these areas is much more cost effective than replacing windows or wood work. I’m Paul Moore, the owner of Right Way Painting Solutions. I’ve been painting homes for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a great background in painting, finishing and wood replacement and repair. We do work for several townhome associations, Nursing Homes and residential properties in the Richfield, Bloomington and Edina areas. We remove wallpaper, replace trim, paint windows, woodwork, walls, ceilings, kitchen cabinets, paneling and cement floors. We give our customers great value with being able to do more than just painting. We offer a two year warrantee on our labor. We supply references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. Please give us a call at 612-839-2239.

STEM FROM PAGE 3 of Science and Engineering Standards” and “inquiry-based” learning; STEM classrooms just might go into greater depth with these topics, Pladson said. Inquiry-based learning allows students to analyze problems, ask scientific questions, develop solutions and demonstrate their thought process, which often happens through projects or other

hands-on work. Experts from outside the classroom will also share insights with K-4 students and 5-6 students will work on community projects. Tuesday’s administrative update followed brief presentations from elementary school teachers, who shared the projects, learning techniques and partnerships they have formed as part of the pilot classrooms. Pladson said teachers will receive training in the spring and summer to help prepare for the expansion.

Eagle girls seek return trip state basketball tourney EP opens with three impressive wins BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS It was a memorable first season for Chris Carr as Eden Prairie’s head girls basketball coach. The former Timberwolves player directed the Eagles to a second-place finish in the 2011 state Class 4A tournament. Eden Prairie had a 25-5 record. The future looks bright for this version of Eden Prairie girls basketball. The Eagles return their two leading scorers from a year ago and have won their first three games. Jackie Johnson is a 6-foot-2 senior forward who averaged 14 points per game as a junior. “Jackie has worked hard since last sea-

son and is tough to guard because of her length and size,” said Carr. “She is not only our leading rebounder and scorer but anchors our defense as well.” Mullaney is back to run the Eagle offense from her guard position. She averaged 12 points per game last season. “Shayne is a great leader and worker,” said Carr. “She is a hard-nosed competitor and our best all-around player.” Johnson and Mullaney will share the Eden Prairie captaincy with 5-8 senior guard Carley Tibbetts, 5-8 junior forward Cassy Saxton and 5-10 junior forward Annie Thul. “We have a young but athletic team,” said Carr. “We should be a more complete team at both ends of the floor than we were a year ago. “We have good depth and potential.” GIRLS BASKETBALL: TO PAGE 27

Derrick LaCombe The Eden Prairie sophomore goalie stopped 38 shots to preserve the Eagles’ 2-1 boys hockey victory over No. 2-ranked Eagan Dec. 3. The Eagles are defending state Class AA champions.

Shayne Mullaney Mullaney, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, came through with 20 points as Eden Prairie edged Benilde-St. Margaret’s 51-50 in overtime at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic girls basketball event Dec. 3 at Hopkins High School. Mullaney is a co-captain of the Eagles along with Jackie Johnson.

McKenzie Johnson The Eden Prairie junior goaltender made 37 saves during the Eagles’ 6-3 girls hockey loss to HillMurray Nov. 29. Angie Heppelmann, Jordan Phillipi and Lauren Boyle scored goals for EP.

Eagle boys basketball squad hopes to overcome graduation losses EPHS boys basketball team will rely on senior co-captains Mohn, Peterson

BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS

BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Talk about rebuilding jobs. Eden Prairie head boys basketball coach David Flom must replace 11 seniors from last season’s team that placed second in the state Class 4A tourney. Eden Prairie finished 27-5 after losing to Hopkins in the state finals. Flom will get a good early look at who might fill those personnel holes created by graduation losses. Eden Prairie opened its season on the road against Apple Valley Dec. 6. The Eagles will meet Duluth East at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at Minnetonka High School. Eden Prairie’s game will be played in the Minnetonka west gym. Eden Prairie enters the season ranked seventh in the state despite those heavy graduation losses. Duluth East is rated 10th. “Our immediate goal is to find depth and play an up-tempo style,” said Flom. “If we play to our potential, we have a chance to do well this season. “Our junior varsity team was 242 last season and we should get help from some of those players.” Eden Prairie’s most experienced players are senior co-captains Sander Mohn and Jordan Peterson. “Mohn is a 6-4 senior wing and our only returning starter,” said Flom. “He is our best defender and shooter. “Peterson will be our low-post scorer and can also hit mid-range shots. Both co-captains are great leaders.” Eden Prairie’s pre-season basketball workouts were hampered somewhat by the absence of five players who were members of the Eagles’ Prep Bowl championship football team. But the Eden Prairie coaches hope the success rubs off on the basketball squad.

Defending state champion Eagles boys hockey earn impressive wins

Eden Prairie’s Sander Mohn attempts to block a Chaska shot during the Class 4A, Section 2 tournament last season. Mohn is the only returning starter back from last year’s Eagle squad that placed second at state. (File photo by Brian Nelson – Sun Newspapers) Flom is scrutinizing a number of players who might fill key roles for this year’s team. Three promising players are 6-0 junior point guard Grant Shaeffer,

6-4 junior post Jack Cottrell and 6-0 sophomore guard Andre Wallace. Eden Prairie travels to Burnsville for a 7:15 p.m. game Tuesday, Dec. 13.

It will rank as one of the most memorable state championship boys hockey games in Minnesota history. That exciting contest took place last March in the Class AA finals as Eden Prairie edged Duluth East 3-2 in triple overtime. Senior center Kyle Rau provided the winning goal as the Eagles claimed their second state title and finished 24-5-2. Rau and his talented senior teammates have graduated. Rau, the 2011 Mr. Hockey award winner, is now skating on the University of Minnesota’s top line. Eden Prairie head coach Lee Smith must replace that skilled senior class. The Eagles return only three players with significant varsity experience from the state championship squad. Smith is molding 13 new players into the Eagle system. Eden Prairie is off to an impressive start with victories over Bloomington Jefferson and secondranked Eagan in its first two games. “We have a long way to go with this young squad, but I am happy with our start,” said Smith. “We hope to compete for Lake Conference and Section 6AA titles and get a chance to defend our state championship.” Eden Prairie (2-0) defeated Jefferson 7-5 Dec. 1 at Eden Prairie Community Center Arena. Steven Spinner, a sophomore center, scored twice in the first period as the Eagles built a 4-2 lead. Junior winger Mason Bergh and senior center Brad Boldenow came through with other EP goals that period. Spinner completed his hat trick in the second period and sophomore defenseman Luc Snuggerud added a goal as the Eagles had a 6-3 advantage. Harry Pajor, a sophomore winger, completed Eden Prairie’s scoring in the third period. Eagle junior goalie Jake Gerdes stopped 20 shots. Eden Prairie, ranked seventh in the state by the Associated Press, knocked off second-rated Eagan 2-1 Dec. 3 at home despite being outshot 39-20. All the game’s goals were scored in the second period. Eden Prairie junior winger Andrew Knudsen and junior center John Sullivan scored with assists from Bergh and Pajor. Eden Prairie sophomore goalie Derrick LaCombe made 38 saves as the Eagles remained unbeaten. Eden Prairie plays Andover at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, on the road. The Eagles will compete in Edina’s tournament Dec. 15-17 against Elk River, Grand Rapids and Edina.

finished with eight. Megan Knoff, a 5-10 junior center, added six points. Eden Prairie earned a 64-35 victory over Apple Valley Dec. 2. Mullaney connected for 23 points and Johnson chipped in with 14. Samantha Trammel, a 6-0 freshman center, scored six points and Tibbetts had five.

Eden Prairie overpowered Eagan 69-29 in the season opener Nov. 29. The Eagles built a commanding 43-9 halftime lead. Johnson finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and six blocks. Eden Prairie will meet Prior Lake at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, on the road. The Eagles host Chaska at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
