Eden Prairie School District puts its ear to the ground Board seeks input from multiple stakeholders using various methods BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Eden Prairie School Board and administration are working to get a lot of feedback from community members about the state of the school district, qualities they would like to see in a new superintendent and why parents are choosing to move their children into and out of Eden Prairie schools. This is evident through a survey regarding the superintendent search the school district posted online, which more than 700 people took. The district will also put out three more upcoming surveys; the school board has chartered two new commissions in the last couple months, and the district has meetings scheduled in February, where parents can give feedback about why they open enrolled their child elsewhere. These forthcoming communication changes have been signs of collaboration between the school board and administrators, specifically Interim Superintendent Jon McBroom and Communications’ head Bob Noyed. McBroom left the Shakopee with a reputation as a straightforward, open communicator. “With Jon on board, we don’t have to worry about the day-to-day. The district’s in good hands,” said SHCOOLS: TO PAGE 4

Schools FROM PAGE 1 School Board Chair Ranee Jacobus. That will allow the school board to focus on things that are really important, she said. “It’s been a great transition. Best we could have hoped for in terms of an interim situation,” Jacobus said. During meetings where search firm School Exec Connect sought input from residents, staff and teachers, some said they would like to find a superintendent
with the qualities that McBroom and the former superintendents running the sessions conveyed – open, straight forward and professional. Former Edina Superintendent Ken Dragseth is working for the firm. He presented the results of an online survey and 14 meetings where he and others sought input from more than 200 staff, teachers, the teachers union, community members and school board members. “People are very, very proud of this school district,” he said. “There is an intense pride in Eden Prairie schools.” People cited strong classroom options, state-of-the-art programs and

strong community support in their feedback. “It doesn’t surprise me that these are the strengths that come out in the district,” Dragseth said. Challenges for the district are something that the school board will have to deal with as a new superintendent comes in. The search firm heard loud and clear that there’s a perception class sizes are large, Dragseth said. “That was obviously one of the largest concerns,” he said. As a result of the turmoil that ensued following elementary school changes, there’s still lot of confusion about board governance structure. There’s confusion about how it works. Some say it’s great; some say it causes problems, Dragseth said. Somehow, the board is going to have to wrestle with that, he said, since it’s certainly an issue in the community. There’s also a strong belief that community members haven’t been talked to, communicated with or included in district decisions, Dragseth said. He said he doesn’t know what caused it, but “something has to be done to address that issue. There’s a feeling that the image of the district took a hit.” The message from those who gave feedback is that Eden Prairie is a good district, but somehow – outside the community especially – “you’re fighting among yourselves,” he said. Sufficient funding for schools was also a concern according to respondents, but that’s common for most districts, Dragseth said. Administrator and principal quality were also mentioned, but that wasn’t articulated, he said. “I think staff moral was higher on the list (of challenges) than in many of the districts that we’ve done,” Dragseth said. Questions on the survey and asked during input sessions also inquired about qualities the respondents would like to see in a superintendent and what questions they would like to ask the superintendent candidates. The survey results, comments, breakdown of responders and the superintendent candidate profile that School Exec Connect created are available on the district website, edenprairie.org. After Dragseth presented the findings to the school board, he offered his own opinion. “I’m very impressed with programs you’re giving kids,” he said. “I’ve been at districts where programs are in bad trouble, but that’s not the case here.” The district is not starting with a broken academic system; it’s a good one, he said. The challenge is how does the school board find a leader to bring the district forward and bring it to the level people want it to be, he said. There are many strong candidates
who will see that challenge as an opportunity; it will attract them, he said. The school board has a challenge, he told them. It needs to decide how it wants to govern and how it works with the rest of the staff. How it does that will have as much to say about dissonance that’s going on in this community. “And that’s my opinion,” Dragseth said. The candidate profile School Exec Connect created, which is based on the community feedback, will help during the recruitment process, Dragseth said. From the school district’s website: “A list of five to seven candidates will be presented to the board on Monday, March 12, with the first round of interviews set for Wednesday, March 14. The list of candidates to be interviewed will be made public following the March 12 meeting.”
Three surveys Before the regular school board meeting Jan. 24, the school board and administrators met for two hours, spending most of the time discussing a randomsample community phone survey. The questionnaire is put out by Decision Resources, which has conducted several surveys for the school district, the city and many other governmental entities in the Twin Cities Metro area. School board members Holly Parker, Chuck Mueller and Suzanne Kutina noted it was the first time they remember administrators setting up a time talk about survey questions with the school board and Decision Resources before the survey went out, rather than letting the administrators work with the group and hearing results afterward. The random-sample survey will ask general questions about the school district. Although the school board discussed survey details during the public meeting, when asked how writing a news article about survey before it’s administered could effect the results, Bill Morris of Decision Resources said reporting on details could skew them, since respondents who read the article could be more informed than those who don’t know anything about it, resulting in two pools of respondents. Survey details will be included after it’s conducted sometime in February. That survey isn’t targeted like the other two surveys. The other two are intended for parents open enrolling their students out of Eden Prairie and for students open enrolling into Eden Prairie from another city and school district. “So, we want to get a good pulse on enrollment, school choices, reasons for leaving … (We’re) hoping to get a lot of good info,” Jacobus said after the Jan. 24 meetings.

The precinct caucus: Here’s your opportunity During these unsettled political times, public confidence in state and national lawmakers is down. The average person who really wants to get involved has one chance to change the country’s direction and its office holders, and that’s by attending his precinct caucus Feb. 7. Changing the direction and electing someone other than the office holder is not an easy process, but political party leaders maintain it can be done. Political parties sponsor these precinct caucuses so everyone has an opportunity to become a delegate to their political unit and to vote on resolutions that could become part of the party platform. A person can attend their precinct caucus if they live in the precinct, are eligible to vote and agree in principle with the political party sponsoring the

caucus. By going to the Secretary of State’s web site, and following directions, you can learn where your caucus is meeting. The address is sos.state.mn.us/index.aspx?page =886. At the caucus of both parties, those attending will be electing delegates and alternates to the district and state conventions where candidates are endorsed. Changing the current cast of office holders who in turn to could change the direction of the party would take a wave of disgruntled citizens across the con-
gressional districts and state. There is little evidence that such a wave of discontent is forming enough to take over election of delegates at the precinct caucuses. While party leaders say everyone is eligible to attend the caucus and influence the future, odds are stacked against it because the party machinery usually controls. In the Republican Party, precinct convenors are appointed by the executive committee of the party’s Basic Political Party Unit. The same committee determines the number of delegates at the caucus by using a formula dividing the selected number into the number who voted in the 2010 election. The DFL party likewise selects the convenors and determines the number of delegates. The Tea Party, which has
gained influence and elected legislators, did not go through a caucus system to gain its power. It started out as a grass roots organization and through social media quickly spread its gospel across the country. There are, however, stories of prominent office holders who got their start by attending their neighborhood precinct caucus. Attend the caucus, be eager to become a delegate, and work through the party system, but chances are you’ll have to work long and hard within the party to make a difference in how Minnesota and the United States are governed. School leaders describe their legislative priorities Some surprises, some themes return again for 2012 BY JOE NATHAN GUEST COLUMNIST Some surprising as well as some continuing themes came through when I asked school leaders around the state for a brief summary of their legislative priorities. Common themes were respecting local control, equalizing funding and for charter public schools, creating opportunities for low cost borrowing that districts currently have. Edina Superintendent Ric
Dressen told me that his top priority is “Continuing to work toward a stable, equitable funding system that would match the needs of a 21st Century education system for our state. It’s time for overhaul. We have stretched our current model as far we can. Many of the elements are out of date. The funding system has to take to account equity, cost differentials, the world of technology and how on-line learning is working. There are things in the current formula that no longer are the drive they once were.” Dressen supports recommendations of a state-wide task force he served on that produced a report, Funding Education for the Future. Les Fujitake, Bloomington Superintendent also worked
on this report. He shares Dressen’s priority that this legislature should be seriously consider this report’s major recommendations. http://education.state.mn.us/MDE/Welc ome/AdvBCT/EducFinanWor k/. Richfield Superintendent Robert J. Slotterback told me, “I would like the legislature to act like local control is a worthy goal. A lot of things that school boards used to do have been taken out of their hands. Local school boards don’t have a lot of authority. I trust the board – the public has just recently elected them.” Superintendent Slotterback cited the $600,000 for integration funding that the district receives as an issue of local control. “That money is very strictly monitored. I would
like to see more power for the board to determine how that money is used. “ Lisa Hendricks, Director of the Partnership Academy Charter in Richfield, explained, “My top priority this session is for the legislature to help create access to affordable short term borrowing options for charter schools to manage the 40% holdback. Charter schools deserve to have the same access traditional public schools have when it comes to borrowing money for the holdback. Our school will has to spend nearly $30,000 in fees to cover the holdback. In addition to the amount of time and energy that has been put in to finding a lending institution that NATHAN: TO PAGE 8

Governor proposes $25 million for Southwest LRT Republican leaders express caution BY SETH ROWE – SUN NEWSPAPERS The state would provide an infusion of funds to keep the planned Southwest Light Rail Line on track under a proposal by Gov. Mark Dayton. The governor announced his bonding recommendations Jan. 17, including $25 million for the Southwest Light Rail Line. His recommendation anticipates the state would eventually pay 10 percent of the $1.2 billion project, which would run about 15 miles between downtown Minneapolis and Eden Prairie, passing through St. Louis Park, Hopkins and Minnetonka en route. A statement from the governor’s office said, “Investing in strong, reliable infrastructure is a critical part of building an environment where businesses can thrive. Repairing our roads, bridges and rail lines for the future with smart investments can not only give Minnesota the assets to attract businesses, but can also put hundreds of Minnesotans back to work in the construction industries that are suffering from high unemployment.” Dayton did not comment at a Jan. 19 press conference with legislative leaders regarding how he arrived at the $25 million number, a relatively small portion of the total the state would need to contribute to the project. “Key to our future prosperity is the continued expansion of light rail,” Metropolitan Council Chair Susan Haigh said during her State of the Region speech Jan. 18. The Southwest Light Rail Line would provide a new transportation option for 210,000 employees currently
working along the corridor, Haigh said. She asserted the line is already attracting new jobs, citing UnitedHealth Group’s addition of a third campus location in the area. A forecast estimates the addition of 60,000 new jobs along the line by 2030. In her speech, Haigh praised Dayton as a “strong partner” on the line, noting his bonding proposal. “The governor has demonstrated time and again his commitment to building a better Minnesota through expanding jobs,” said Haigh, a Dayton appointee. “Government that is as good as its people – that is what we’re about here in Minnesota. This starts with projects like Southwest that will grow jobs, expand development, and improve transit options.” At the Jan. 19 press conference, Speaker of the House Kurt Zellers (RMaple Grove) expressed newfound enthusiasm for transit and mentioned strengths he sees in the Southwest Light Rail Line’s route but also expressed financial concerns. “I will fully admit I’m coming to the transit party, so to speak,” as a result of using a bus line from Maple Grove to downtown Minneapolis,” Zellers said. “I would say I’ve absolutely become a fan of it,” he added. “I think it’s a very good policy.” Maple Grove’s transit garage is often full, whether on a Saturday afternoon or Monday morning, he said. Regarding the Southwest Light Rail Line’s strengths, Zellers said, “I personally think the Southwest would have been a better start than the North Star line or the Central Line. [The Southwest line] probably has a better concentration and better ridership available.” Nevertheless, Zellers cautioned that

government would have to “subsidize the line.” Zellers said, “I think using bus rapid transit has a real advantage, first and foremost, and taking care of our current construction before we add additional obligations is more important.” Senate Majority Leader David Senjem (R-Rochester) said he has not yet visited the corridor itself. He noted the Legislature passed a requirement last year designed to provide more information to policymakers about passenger rail and bus rapid transit projects. The law, passed in special session in 2011, requires any state agency or local government authority that seeks state funds for such projects from the Legislature to provide a report on full past and projected project costs and funding sources as well as an estimate of operations and maintenance costs in the future. The law also requires the Metropolitan Council and a the state commissioner of transportation to annually provide a legislative report on the status of such projects, including projected ridership, a timeline, progress update, financial plan and numerous specific financial details. The law will allow bonding and transportation committees to better evaluate proposals, Senjem said. “But what they are is they’re a financial liability. As we go forward, I think we’ll be able to make these assessments with a little better expertise.” House Minority Leader Paul Thissen (DFL-Minneapolis) expressed strong support for the Southwest Light Rail Line. He pointed out the project’s support from the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce, which represents member businesses in the West Metro.
“It’s something we should do to make sure the Twin Cities is a 21st century city,” Thissen said. TwinWest President Bruce Nustad said support for the line is one of the chamber’s top legislative priorities. “We know that to attract and retain world-class businesses of all sizes in the Twin Cities, we need a world-class system of moving people and goods, which includes roads, bridges and multi-modal transit,” Nustad said. The Southwest Light Rail Line scores high on a federal cost effectiveness index, Nustad added. “With hundreds and hundreds of businesses along the line, 50 of which employ over 100 employees, and several of which employ more than 3,000 employees, we know that future growth, expansion, and economic development of this critical jobs corridor is greatly enhanced by the development of Southwest Light Rail,” he said. The project also has received support from the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce and the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce. Rep. Ryan Winkler (DFL-Golden Valley) and Sen. Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park) released their own statements supporting the bonding bill’s inclusion of the Southwest Light Rail Line. Winkler said the line would be good for business and good for communities, noting the support of the state’s three largest chambers of commerce. “Transit projects like the Southwest Corridor are essential to our future prosperity,” Winkler said. “This is certainly good news for the residents of the southwest metro who daily battle increasing traffic congestion,” Latz said. More information on the Southwest Light Rail Line is available at southwesttransitway.org.

Making Marines: The Training The third installment in a series examining Marine Corps recruit training been stripped away. “It’s an adjustment that you have to make,” 19-year-old Christopher Williams of St. Paul said. Recruit Marcellous Dixon of Plymouth joined the Marines because he said he needed the discipline. (Photo by Chris Dillmann – Sun Newspapers) BY DANIEL CALLAHAN AND CHRIS DILLMANN SUN NEWSPAPERS They’re a few days out from the intake process, but the recruits at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego are only just beginning the process of becoming Marines. First they must work through 63 days of education, both physical and mental. Some expect what’s ahead, while others do not. Though, all will become very familiar with what it takes to become a Marine.
So it begins Their heads are shaved, the
uniforms are on. The recruits have been through the first few days of uncertainty at the depot, learning the basics of marching in step. They’ve met the drill instructors who will be with them for the duration of their training and have been allotted berths in a squad bay, a sort of dormitory lined with foot lockers and bunks feet away from each other, the recruits’ home during their time in San Diego. There’s a common wash area in between the bays, and everything in possession of the recruit is government issued. The slightest pieces of who they were have
Physically demanding In Phase One, the recruits are given their first taste of combat fitness training, physical fitness training, swimming and Marine Corps Martial Arts, a combination of muai thai, akido, boxing and other hand-to-hand combat, which stresses the strength of the individual and teaches the recruits to be capable of fighting even without a weapon. Instead, the weapon is themselves. Phase One’s main emphasis is getting the new recruit in shape. In everything, they are beginning to qualify, meaning
they have attained the basic level of proficiency required to be United States Marines. Events are timed and must be completed appropriately before a recruit can move on. Though passing on the first or second attempt is stressed, the Corps will continue to attempt to train a recruit until they quit, but if a recruit is unable to qualify in a certain area in a prescribed timeframe, they may be recycled into a platoon in a earlier training day. This is all to ensure they are fully conditioned in battle situations. “The Marine Corps is not an equal opportunity employer.” Col. Robert Gates, the chief of staff for the recruit depot, said.
Learning to shoot During Phase Two, the recruits leave the depot and head north to Camp Pendleton,
which runs roughly 50 miles along the California coast. There they will continue to learn to function as a team and begin the process of becoming riflemen as well. It is not a quick or easy process. The recruits are barely allowed to touch real rifles for weeks into the training and must learn the detailed parts and assembly of the weapon long before they are allowed to shoot them. First they train with an electronic system to improve their accuracy, spend hours with the unloaded rifle in their hands aiming at targets and must qualify with the weapon from a variety of distances to earn the right to carry the gun. Simulating shooting at barrels with small dots throughout it, the recruit is taught the art of steadying the hand and breathing techniques when firCMYK

‘Do what’s right, you understand?’ From the very beginning of their training, the recruits have learned to recognize and respect the symbols of the drill instructor: the campaign cover, or hat, and belt. For the vast majority of their training, they are ever present, clearly delineating to the recruits who are in charge, outlining the hierarchy of the training program. Then the hats come off. One of the few moments of relative calm for recruits comes during guided discussions with drill instructors. In these quieter moments, the senior drill instructor removes his cover and sits with the recruits to speak with them about upstanding behavior. The voice softens from a shout to a growl during an event which may take place as many as a few times a week, the recruits are instructed on topics which may seem outside the purview of boot camp. They learn to avoid legal entanglements, how to behave themselves as Marines outside of the regimentation of recruit training, all topics interlaced with the Corps values of honor, courage and commit-
ment. Drill Instructor Gunnery Sgt. Adam Blake said he one time went back to review all the topics and with more than 50 covered he said they weren’t done. During the discussions the recruits are able to discuss openly emotions or feelings they are otherwise unable to convey. This also helps them build respect with their DI.
Heading back north In the last few weeks of training, the recruits head back to Camp Pendleton to continue their marksmanship training and begin preparations for the Crucible, a harrowing 50 hours of hiking in full gear on minimal food and even less sleep. This is everything they have worked for. The weeks of training, the Drill Instructors in their faces constantly, it all adds up to the Crucible. The event culminates with an unofficial and often tearful graduation. The moment they’ve been waiting, working and fighting for: the title. As the event nears, the recruits know it’s what they have been working for. One recruit mentioned during Team Week, which the DIs back off and is known as a week that is less intense as the rest, that everything they work for comes at the end. And that if you can stay mentally strong, each day gets easier. Caucuses provide stage for workings of democracy Members of state political parties will gather Feb. 7 BY T.W. BUDIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s a chance to shape the political parties and the fortunes of candidates. Minnesotans will caucus on Tuesday, Feb. 7, gathering in neighborhoods across the state for an exercise in democracy. “It’s always a big deal,” said Minnesota DFL State Party Chairman Ken Martin of the caucuses. DFL Secretary of State Mark Ritchie views the caucuses as a chance for people to arrange the “building blocks” of parties by molding party platforms. Beyond this, Ritchie sees the caucuses as providing candidates willing to spend the time, make the phone calls and wear out the shoe leather, with a means of making their political mark without spending a lot of money. Caucuses can be wellsprings of new ideas, Martin said. He cites an idea out of a northern Minnesota caucus in the 1950s that Hubert Humphrey latched onto, an idea about helping that eventually took
the shape of the Peace Corps. This year, a presidential year, will add zest to the caucuses as Republicans and Democrats will feature presidential straw polls. In 2008, in a presidential race matching Sen. Hillary Clinton against Sen. Barack Obama, some 220,000 Democrats caucused in a record-setting display of fervor. “I remember standing in a line a mile long,” Martin quipped. Republican officials are hopeful of a big caucus turnout for their non- binding presidential straw poll. Some of the parties are getting innovative in their approach to the caucus. The Independence Party of Minnesota this year is hosting a live, online caucus. “I’d love to see a hundred people (participate),” said IP Chairman Mark Jenkins. Jenkins expects a few glitches, but also foresee the use of technology continuing into the future. Details about the live, online IP caucus can be found on the party’s website: independenceminnesota.org. The IP will have caucuses at more than 40 locations on Feb. 7 — Edina, Bloomington, Eagan, Minnetonka, Plymouth, Coon Rapids, Stillwater,
believes, in part because the same people attend the party’s caucuses. And these activists tend to send similar-patterned candidates into the primaries, election after election. A turnout of 100,000 citizens on caucus night wouldn’t be too bad, Ritchie indicated. Martin expects around 30,000 people to attend the DFL caucuses this year. Jenkins said he was unfamiliar with the previous IP caucus turnouts, but, whatever the total, they’re hoping for more, he explained. The IP, which has seen some election success in Minnesota, is focusing on getting a half dozen candidates elected to the Legislature, Jenkins said. “I’d be lying if I’d say I’d be disappointed at two or three,” he said. Attempts to contact Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Pat Shortridge were not successful. The Secretary of State’s Office will post the results of the caucus night presidential straw polls on its website. The results will be provided by the parties.
elsewhere. To find where to caucus, check the Secretary of State’s website under “Elections” for a caucus-finder to locate the caucus in your neighborhood. Caucusing begins at 7 p.m. In addition to the Republican, Democratic, and Independence parties, the Green and Constitution parties are also caucusing. The Grassroots and Libertarian parties are not. To be eligible to participate in a caucus, attendees must be eligible to vote in the next general election, live in the precinct, and in general agree with the principles of the political party. Delegates to party conventions are often elected at caucuses. One theory about caucuses is that supporters of opposition parties sometimes i\nfiltrate competing caucuses to twist the results. While Martin and Jenkins don’t wholly discount the scenario, they downplay it. “It would be very difficult to accomplish,” Martin said. Democrats are eager to bring new blood into their caucuses, he explained. Democratic statewide candidates have struggled, Martin

Meet candidate for Congress John Howard John Howard of Edina, a Republican candidate for Congress in the 3rd Congressional District, will host a ”Meet the Candidate” event at the Eden Prairie Library on Thursday, Feb. 2. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. and will be held in the Conference room. Howard, 24, says a core reason why he is running for Congress is that climate change is the most important issue for the future of his generation, but it is being ignored by the current political process. “Climate change is real, it’s serious, and it’s likely going to impact nearly everyone in negative ways in my lifetime” he says. At the event on Thursday, Feb. 2, in addition to introducing himself and answering questions about his candidacy, Howard will also provide information about the “Prudent Person Resolution on Climate Change” which he hopes people will present at party caucus sessions on Feb. 7, especially at Republican Party caucuses where this issue may otherwise not be addressed. Howard notes “the ‘Prudent Person
Resolution” says that just like people buy insurance to protect themselves against risks, it makes sense to take steps to protect themselves, children and grandchildren against the risk of problems from climate change. Anyone interested in hearing about his candidacy or wants to find out more about the “Prudent Person Resolution on Climate Change” to come to the session on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Eden Prairie Library conference room or to visit his campaign website, JohnHoward3.com.

Dispatch FROM PAGE 1 Airport. “We all work very closely together when we have a fire call,” said Kewitsch, who proposed the system. But firefighters noticed a lag between when incidents were first reported, and when fire departments called for backup. Dispatchers currently must manually call other dispatch centers to request mutual aid, as if they don’t already have enough to do. “It’s obviously stressful because there’s a lot going on at one time,” said Lt. Jay Henthorn, who supervises the Richfield Police Department dispatchers. The new system will automatically contact departments for assistance depending on information
entered by the dispatcher detailing the incident’s location and severity. A fire on the west end of Richfield would automatically warrant a call to Edina, for instance, or call for even more help depending on scale. Kewitsch believes the new system will allow assisting departments to arrive two to two-and-ahalf minutes earlier, precious time. “A fire doubles in size every minute, and it takes a lot of people to fight it,” Kewitsch explained. “When you’re sitting there fighting a fire you’re always hoping your (assisting) units are going to get there faster.” Other metro fire departments share the sentiment. “A number of other agencies in Hennepin County are very interested and will probably roll out (the system) shortly after we implement it,” Kewitsch said.
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
As recently as 10 years ago, departments were not so eager to join forces, he noted. Bloomington Fire Chief Ulysses Seal is the longest tenured chief among the eight communities receiving the dispatch upgrade, and remembers the old days. “Usually, it was done only on a very big incident and probably somewhat reluctantly,” said Seal. It didn’t look good to ask for help, firefighters thought. “In the old days it was a sign of weakness if you couldn’t handle a relatively straightforward structure fire yourself.” The hesitance is gone, and fire departments assist one another at least once a month, Seal said. They are putting their pride aside because they realize, “the citizen doesn’t care when their house is on fire, where their help comes from,” the chief observed. “They just care that it comes.”

BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Former Minnesota Viking defensive end Mark Mullaney played 12 seasons in the National Football League before retiring after the 1986 season. Mullaney competed under Hall of Fame coach Bud Grant and had the opportunity to be part of a NFC championship Vikings team that appeared in the 1977 Super Bowl before losing to the Oakland Raiders. Mullaney’s daughter Shayne inherited some of Mark’s athletic genes that aided his long and successful NFL career. Shayne Mullaney has developed into one of the state’s top point guards as a senior member of the Eden Prairie girls basketball team. The 5-foot-9 guard was averaging 20.2 points per game as of Jan. 23. Mullaney and her Eagle teammates are ranked third in the state among Class 4A squads with a 14-2 overall record. “I never had a chance to watch my dad play for the Vikings because I wasn’t born until after he retired,” said Shayne. “But I have seen dad play on Viking highlight films. “Dad never pushed me into sports. He let me decide what I wanted to play. But once I chose basketball, he spent a lot of time helping me train for the sport.”
