Dayton visits unusual suspects in EP Talks economy, legislative session, Vikings stadium BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS He may be a Democrat, but they invited him, anyway. Gov. Mark Dayton visited Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce members during a luncheon Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Olympic Hills Golf Club to talk about the economy and the role between private industry and government, among other things. The governor provided a recap of four economic summits across the state (with seven more to come), the proposed Viking’s stadium and thoughts on the recent legislative session and state government shutdown. In his state travels, some have said eliminate government at all levels and let the private sector work out economic problems, Dayton said. However, what he discovered during discussions with hospital officials in Fergus Falls serves as an example of how important it is to have good government with success in the private sector, he said. Dayton said hospital executives told him Medicare and further health care in Minnesota has made the difference between many hospital’s solvency and bankruptcy, since they have an increasing number of Medicaid

It may be difficult to compare students’ math scores to previous years, but Eden Prairie students clearly made gains in state reading scores last spring. Results for the Minnesota C o m p r e h e n s i v e Assessments show great gains for many students since three years ago, according to Eden Prairie School District administrators. Reading scores in the district are higher than the state average for all grade levels. All grades tested in Eden Prairie, 3-8 and grade 10, had proficiency levels 84 percent or higher. For specific groups of students, test scores have mostly improved in the past three years. Since 2008, Asian students’ test scores have MCA: TO PAGE 21

High school students help collect coats for kids BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Students at Blaine High School will try to collect 500 winter coats for children in need this fall. Each year the Business Professionals of America class (known as BPA) at the high school coordinates a coat drive as part of the Coats for Kids campaign. Pilgrim Cleaners started the campaign 26 years ago to help families who couldn’t afford to buy winter coats. Eighteen years ago, Blaine High School became the first school to officially host a coat drive to support the campaign. Lana Rice teaches BPA at Blaine High School. “The students collect coats before school every day for two weeks,” she said. This year the school’s collection will run Monday, Sept. 26 through Thursday, Oct. 6. “We do it as a class,” Rice said. “It’s not necessarily and assignment. We do a lot of volunteer work through BPA.” Sometimes students go door-to-door asking for coat donations. Some go to garage sales and buy coats or ask for donations. Teachers and students at the

Last year’s BPA class at Blaine High School with the boxes of coats they collected. (Submitted photo) school also donate. At the end of the collection period, Pilgrim Cleaners sends a truck to pick up the coats. Pilgrim then cleans the coats and gives them to local charities for distribution. Rice said the campaign won’t merely make an impact on the children receiv-

ing the coats, however. It will also affect the students collecting them. “It makes them realize that there are a ton of people in need,” she said. She said it also help them to “always remember to give back to the community and volunteer.” Blaine High School is only one of the

schools participating in the Coats for Kids drive. According to Judy Sprague with Pilgrim Cleaners, Blaine High School has often donated more coats than any other school. “We’ve donated over 10,000 coats over the years,” Rice said. The school that collects the most coats this year will win a Subway party. Those who wish to donate coats can drop them off at Blaine High School or another participating school. They can also take them to any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the metro now through Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s campaign is sponsored this year by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. The charities receiving coats are Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Those who wish to send a cash donation should sent it to the “Coats for Kids Fund” c/o Pilgrim Cleaners, 3217 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN 55443.

After-school program still looking for help BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS It has been more than eight months since the New American Academy has opened in Eden Prairie, and despite its continued need for equipment, volunteers and even help paying its rent, the nonprofit after-school program is still managing to assist students struggling in school, particularly students of Somali descent. Asad Shane, a Somalia native and Eden Prairie math teacher, started the academy in Minneapolis and then moved it to Eden Prairie’s Golden Triangle business area in January. He provided an overview of the academy Wednesday, Sept. 14, to a crowd that packed the office site it rents, 6875 Washington Ave. S. Eden Prairie School Board members, city council members, Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens and the Minnesota Department of Education’s assistant commissioner, Rose Chu, were in attendance. Some of them made brief comments, along with several community members who support the program. The group has helped more than 200 students, Shane said. Approximately 170

Shane said the group has assisted more than 200 students with school work and other leadership development help. (Photo by Paul Groessel • Sun Newspapers) of 200 students reported improved test scores after receiving homework help, he said.

“I believe these kids are not deficient, Shane said; they just need more engagement.

The center is open after school and on weekends. Its volunteers offer one hour of homework help plus an hour of additional worksheets prepared by the academy. Shane’s goal is to provide help beyond school work, only. It also provides leadership development, crime prevention programs, sports activities, citizenship classes and job preparation training. Students new to the United States face several problems he has been trying to address. Those problems include a lack of engagement, identity, role models and motivation, Shane said. To help in those areas and leadership development, Shane’s group has partnered with other community groups, such as the Unity Center for Youth Leadership, he said. The Unity Center for Youth Leadership is a Minneapolis-area youth program that aims to end social and racial injustice, according to its website. Mayor Tyra-Lukens said it was good to see the New American Academy’s efforts are divided between city-related civic PROGRAM: TO PAGE 18

Thousands of words, very little reading They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I’m not a photographer, I prove that almost weekly. But sometimes I wish I had spent more than one semester of college learning the finer points of photography, because a good picture is much easier to compose than a 1,000-word story. When I began my journalism career I often heard it said that film is cheap, take plenty of photos. That’s very true, but nonetheless there was a practical limitation to how many photos you could take at any given event. Nowadays the only limitation to taking hundreds of photos at a high school football game or community festival is the size of the memory

card in a digital camera. And if you take enough photos with the right camera and settings, by default you’ll end up with a poetic thousand words in stunning digital magnificence. When I see a great collection of historical photos, I have the utmost appreciation for the work that was involved, as a photographer in the 1950s had technical limitations that the same photographer in 2011 wouldn’t have. So when I had a

chance to see the photos of Irwin Norling, I was highly impressed. Norling’s photos, thousands of them, were compiled into the book “Suburban World The Norling Photos” a few years ago. The photos had been donated to the Bloomington Historical Society years ago, as they depict life in Bloomington, primarily in the 1950s and ’60s. I was loaned a copy of the book a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed the historic look at Bloomington. Norling was successful for a couple of reasons. For starters he took a lot of great photos in an era when cameras were more labor intensive than their modern day counterparts. But

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Tim Fox, a vote for our children To the editor: I have had the pleasure of observing the positive impact Tim Fox has had on our children during the past decade. I have worked with him in his role as a fellow coach in Eden Prairie youth sports, as well as a volunteer and leader in youth ministries at Wooddale Church. I have seen Tim’s passion and commitment to children (whether in Eden Prairie, St Paul or Guatemala) and it is contagious. Tim’s commitment to others was recently recognized by his employer, 3M, as they recognized Tim as “3M Volunteer of the Year” for 2010. Tim combines a giving attitude with a strong collaborative approach to leadership. Tim is not only focused on getting things done, but getting the right things done in the right way. Tim will bring us years of valuable experience in working with

committees and boards (including the Eden Prairie school board). Not only will he bring strong analytical and process skills that he has honed as an analyst at 3M, but he will bring the focus on transparency and accountability that is needed with our school board and the administration. These are important times for our school district and our children. Tim will make sure that both the administration and the school board are held accountable for developing plans and tactics that are consistent with the agreed upon objectives. He will also foster an open environment where input is properly sought and used in making recommendations. And, all stakeholders will be kept aware of progress. I know Tim Fox will be a positive addition to our school board and I strongly encourage all my neighbors to join me and vote for our kids with a vote for Tim Fox. his technical skills were only part of the formula. As is noted in the forward of the book, one of the reasons for Norling’s success was the fact that he was there. He wasn’t a professional photographer who chased high paying gigs across the Twin Cities, he was a Bloomington man who tirelessly chronicled life in his hometown. Even if I lived in Bloomington I doubt I’d have access to some of the scenes Norling photographed. Besides community events and happenings, he periodically chased the police cars and fire trucks of Bloomington to the scene of a HANKS: TO NEXT PAGE

Faith commentary: ‘Jesus Wept’ BY BRENDAN PRIGGE • GUEST COLUMNIST That’s your memory work for today. The shortest verse in the Bible. Two words, a noun and a verb. What do we learn from them? Well, the occasion here was the death of Lazarus. There are a lot of interesting angles to this story but let’s focus on this one. Jesus cried. Crying usually indicates some kind of deep feeling or emotion. That by itself is worth noting. Jesus has deep feelings and emotions. Jesus experienced empathy and compassion as Mary and Martha grieved the death of their brother, and Jesus experienced his own grief and sadness at the death of that friend. Some people have a strange view of God. They see him as a vengeful old man who looks for opportunities to inflict pain and rejoices in our misery. When you experience pain and sadness God is not happy. He is not laughing. God does not delight in your pain. Jesus wept. God

Hanks FROM PREVIOUS PAGE crime or fire. I’d be able to get a few decent photos at a crime scene or blazing inferno, but Norling’s photos are the work of a guy who knew the police officers and firefighters of the city on a personal level, and was given access to moments most photographers of the 21st century only dream of. Norling’s photos feature a variety of Bloomington events that you’d expect, such as parades and car accidents, yet it’s the people I don’t know from Adam –

wept as his friends grieved and he wept because of his own loss. He empathizes with you as well. God is not your enemy. He’s your friend. Talk to Him through prayer. Of course, God doesn’t just grieve when you grieve, God also rejoices when you rejoice! God is perfectly in tune with you and knows how you feel. I don’t know the logistics of this whole thing. How can Jesus rejoice with me when I’m happy and at the same time be sad with you if you’re sad? I don’t know, but I would hope that God is capable of doing some things that I can’t comprehend. No matter. This verse is further evidence that your savior cares deeply for you and empathizes with you. That’s enough to keep me clinging to Him through faith. The Rev. Brendan Prigge is pastor of Victory Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie. He can be reached at revbprigge@victorylcms.org. such as the grocery store owner, Bloomington Sun columnist and cahiers at a Chinese restaurant – that are as interesting to look at. The old cars, the 1950s era prices on the menu board at the Chinese restaurant and the old-fashioned hats atop a quartet of nurses standing bedside in 1957 are as entertaining to behold. I’m not a Bloomington history buff. I never will be. I’d be hard pressed to read 10,000 words about Bloomington’s history, yet I could spend hours reviewing photos from Bloomington’s past, and the time would fly by. If you have an appetite for nostalgia, get a copy of the book and read Norling’s pictures.

History comes alive at Bloomington’s River Rendezvous IF YOU GO

BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Little did the loggers, voyageurs, silversmiths and potters of yesteryear know that as they were going about their business more than a century ago, they weren’t merely providing the goods and services necessary for survival, they were also creating history. Their modern day counterparts bring that history to life each year at Pond Dakota Mission Park in Bloomington, in the form of Bloomington’s annual River Rendezvous. For six days each fall dozens of reenactors set up shop on the grounds of the park, with five of those days spent teaching schoolchildren about the ways and means of early Minnesota settlers. Approximately 8,000 students will parade through demonstrations presented by about 50 reenactors participating in the annual event. On Saturday, Sept. 24, the grounds are open to the public for the 18th annual gathering. For Peter Henrikson of Grand Marais, Minn., it’s an opportunity to share his knowledge of timber framing.

What: Bloomington River Rendezvous Where: Pond Dakota Mission Park, 401 E. 104th St. When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 Admission: $6 Info: xr.com/rendezvous Using vintage tools, Henrikson demonstrates how the frame of a house or barn would have been created through mortise and tenon joinery. Crafting timbers that join together to form the frame of a building requires the use of an old-fashioned beam drill, chisels and handsaws. The tools of his trade are not modern day knockoffs, he noted. Beam drills such as Henrikson uses haven’t been manufactured in close to 100 years, he added. ‘Democratic Visions’ lineup announced Journalist, columnist, author and adventurer Jim Klobuchar shares his perspectives on American politics during the current edition of “Democratic Visions.” In a three-part discussion with host Tim O’Brien, Klobuchar also shares anecdotes about campaigning with his daughter, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar. The real and fictional figures in the satirical work of Star Tribune cartoonist L.K. Hanson are provided human voices by Eden Prairie’s Doug Lind and others from a retreat he calls “The DFL Botanical Garden.” Rounding out the program are Minnetonka City Council candidate Peggy Kvam and incumbent James Hiller. “Democratic Visions” is produced by Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Edina volunteers for DFL Senate District 42. Segments of the program are posted on the web at dflsd42.org. In Hopkins, Minnetonka, Edina, Richfield and Eden Prairie, “Democratic Visions” can be seen on Comcast Channel 15, 9 p.m. Sundays and 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and Bloomington Cable Channel 16 carries the program on 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesdays and 2 p.m. Wednesdays.

Henrikson was new to River Rendezvous last year. It is an “amazing get together of a whole bunch of people with a lot of skills and knowledge of the early 1800s in Minnesota,” he said. Native American life, early trades and crafts, pioneer life, wilderness skills and the fur trade are among the topics covered through demonstrations and reenactments at River Rendezvous. Tours of the 1856 Pond House at the park site will be given throughout the day. Food will be available for purchase. Parking is available adjacent to the park.

Is that goose poop?

We e k l y S u p e r S a v i n g s !

Nope, those are aeration “cores” on your lawn. Those cores are the result of a smart decision to aerate. Aeration is one of the most important natural and chemical free practices available to strengthen and beautify your lawn. Small cores are mechanically pulled from your lawn and left on top. This action helps control thatch, improves the soil structure, creates growth pockets for new roots, and opens the way for water, oxygen and fertilizer to reach the root zone of your lawn. Healthy lawns start with fall aeration!

Third annual Lakeville Pedal the Parks more than biking Event supports, raises awareness for healthy lifestyles BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS One Lakeville organization is showing how a small, grassroots effort can attract others and grow into a much larger communitywide event. Lakeville Friends of the Environment and the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota will be presenting the third annual Pedal the Parks and Sustainability Fair 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, Pioneer Plaza, 20801 Holyoke Ave., Lakeville. Registration and bicycle safety checks will be conducted 9 a.m., while a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the city’s new wayfinding sign system will take place 9:30 a.m. Event organizers are encouraging as many community members as possible to attend this year’s event, which will feature speakers, free food, and education, in addition to guided bike routes of 6, 10, and 20 miles. The free annual event allows residents of Lakeville and other nearby communities an opportunity to not only spend a morning biking and enjoying the scenery along the trail

system, but it is also designed to educate all attendees about ways of living a more environmentally friendly life, according to Lakeville Friends of the Environment member Veda Kanitz. “We want people to work together locally to solve problems. We work with local citizens to protect the [city’s] environment,” Kanitz said. “We are also showcasing the parks and trail system in Lakeville.” Kanitz, who has been with the Lakeville environmental organization since 2004, said the first event was modest in size, with only about 25 people attending. She added that the original idea for the event came from a young member of her organization. “We actually got started with a youth who wanted to do a biking event,” she said. “Our first event was in East Community Park.” The first year garnered a modest 25 bikers and a bike rodeo, which was overseen by the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, known more commonly to those involved as Bike MN. “They handle the whole biking end, and we do the environmental message,” Kanitz said. Bike MN, however, is just one of many organizations joining the cause. Among the others is Valley Natural Foods of Burnsville.

According to Charli Mills, VNF marketing communications manager, the co-op has been with Lakeville Friends of the Environment since the beginning. “When they organized, several of the founding members were members and shoppers of our co-op,” she said. “It seemed like a natural fit from the beginning. As they started out small, we supported their efforts and then it grew into Pedal in the Parks” In addition to providing some financial assistance for expenses such as renting tents and banner printing costs, as well as donating all of the soda, VNF will be participating in the event as part of the sustainability fair. This year Mills and others with VNF will be encouraging the use of aluminum cans over the use of plastic bottles. “The soda is organic soda in aluminum cans. Aluminum cans can be recycled,” she said. “Though we do recycle plastic, we don’t have a good system yet for recycled plastics, not in the way we do for aluminum cans.” But Mills said even this presents a bit of a challenge due to the type of event it is. “It does challenge us when we think of a no-waste event,” Mills said. “The challenge is how do we do to a no-

waste event without bringing packaged product.” Instead of bringing individually packaged items, such as chips, VNF members will be brining a product that is sold in bulk at the Burnsville co-op. “We are bringing an item called glad corn,” Mills said, describing it as a snack food that is grown in Mountain Lake, Minn. “We will be passing out glad corn to bikers.” According to Mills, the corn is grown naturally with no chemical processing. She added that it may not be certified organic, but “we would say they grow it clean.” Daniel Patterson of Dakota County Active Living, a county program funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota to promote daily physical activity, said the program has supported the event for the past three years with modest donations. Patterson will attend this year’s event to encourage people to be more physically active. “We see it as a way of getting people more comfortable on their bikes so that they make other trips by bike,” Patterson said. “The end goal is to get people more physically active in their everyday life, and that provides longterm health benefits.”

Dayton FROM PAGE 1 the No. 1 tax problem businesses face is property taxes, since the state has shifted the brunt of the tax burden onto businesses, whose property taxes have gone up 75 percent over the last eight years, Dayton said. Overall, state economic health relies on a balance between government expenditures, tax sensitivity and efficiency in government spending – all while ensuring proper education investments are made. "Our future is about the brain power and then the focus of the education of your young people,” so they can be the entrepreneurs and productive employees of the future, he said.

Education funding, legislative session When asked if the state will ever meet its financial obligation to schools (since it has shifted payments to school districts to help balance budgets), Dayton said he wanted to have long-term budget solutions rather than further delaying school aid payments and issuing bonds, repaid through future tobacco sales, to tackle the $5 billion deficit. Those school aid shift and bond sale was part of the compromise Dayton made with legislature to end the shutdown in July. Those solutions are part of the reason, he thinks, that the state’s bond rating was lowered, which could raise the cost of future borrowing. The delayed school aid means many school districts will have to borrow money in the mean time, but Dayton said the $50 increase in per-pupil funding from the state this year and another $50 bump next year should help most districts recoup any costs from borrowing money. Those $50 increases were also part of the July agreement.

Gov. Mark Dayton takes reporters’ questions, mainly about the Vikings’ stadium proposal, after the chamber of commerce speech. Dayton said the Vikings have thus far committed more than $400 million to the Arden Hills stadium proposal, and he speculated it could reach $500 million. (Photo by Paul Groessel • Sun Newspapers) Dayton proposed a more long-term solution, taxing the top two percent of Minnesota earners, who according to a department of revenue analysis, pay a smaller percentage of income than other Minnesotans, Dayton said. Dayton said he was not happy with the compromise, but the shutdown needed to end. “Compromise means agreeing to things you don’t agree with,” Dayton said. When talking about the Republican majority legislature, with many new faces, the governor said he had never met a group of people who thought, “compromise was a weakness and intransigence a virtue.” “… If you're a grown up and you're responsible,” Dayton said. “You make decisions, then you take the responsibilities with the consequences of them, good or bad. And, I can disagree with people,

and I can respect them. And again that’s democracy. “But, again, I have no respect for someone who insists on having it their way and then when it goes awry, tries to blame me or anyone else. That's unacceptable." After his speech, state Rep. Jenifer Loon, R-42B, said the governor’s comments about education funding were “right on” – nobody likes a shift in school aid payments. She also pointed out that 90 percent of the bill that passed to end the government shutdown was part of a legislative proposal that Dayton rejected before the shutdown, but accepted weeks later. Other leaders also agreed to things they did not agree with, Loon said, and she’s hoping the impasse that resulted between a new governor and new legislators is avoided next session. She hopes issues can be resolved early in the session,

before deal making reaches a “crisis point,” she said. “That’s what I’ve taken away from the session,” Loon said.

Vikings stadium proposal When asked about alternative locations for a new Vikings stadium (a “plan b” to the proposed Arden Hills location) Dayton said he is not aware of alternate proposals. He is site neutral and only wants to make sure the Vikings stay in Minnesota, he said. He also doesn’t want to have any of the state’s general fund revenue going into the project. The Vikings have committed $420 million into the Arden Hills site, and Dayton speculated that commitment could reach $500 million for the estimated $1.1 billion project.

proficiency levels among the grades tested, 3-8 and grade 11. Going forward, the state and Eden Prairie School District will use 2011 math scores as a baseline for future MCA-III math results. The MCAs are used to as the federal government barometer for progress under No Child Left Behind. The MCAs are used to determine if the school districts and individual schools are meeting Adequate Yearly Progress. But, AYP status for Minnesota will be put on hold since the Minnesota Department of Education has filed a waiver with the federal government, so it would be exempt from AYP standards. Director of Educational Services at Eden Prairie, Stephen West, said all AYP results have been put on hold until the waiver request goes through.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS The task gets tougher for No. 1ranked Eden Prairie this week as the unbeaten Eagles open the Lake Conference football schedule. Eden Prairie (3-0) went on the road to shut out Maple Grove 35-0 Sept. 16. The Eagles’ stingy defense has allowed only seven points in three games. But Eden Prairie will face a tough challenge from Hopkins’ spread offense this week. The Eagles will try to celebrate homecoming with a win over the Royals at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in Aerie Stadium. Hopkins is 2-1 after beating Irondale 39-21 last week. “This will be a critical game for us as far as the Lake Conference and section are concerned,” said Eden Prairie coach Mike Grant. “It is our homecoming and we would like to keep winning. “Our defense will be tested by Hopkins. But linebacker Drake Michaelson and linemen Anthony King-Foreman, Tyson Reinke and Melvin De-Souza have been playing great.” Grant said he also likes the way his revamped offensive line is making progress. “We have all new guys on the offensive line this season, but they have been getting better every week,” said the Eagle coach. “We had a great push from our line against Maple Grove last week.” Eden Prairie’s offensive line features Nick Davidson (left tackle), Justin Schmid (left guard), Tony Yost (center), Adam McPherson (right guard), Dan Urquhart (right tackle) and Zach Hovey (tight end). Eagle senior running back Andrew Larson took advantage of his team’s improved blocking to gain 122 yards on 14 carries against Maple Grove. He also scored three touchdowns on runs of 52, 10 and 28 yards. Larson is on his way to a 1,500-yard rushing season. The Eagle standout

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to September 30th receive $100 off when you mention this article.
