GE breaks electric vehicle ground BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS GE Capital has broke ground in Eden Prairie for its new facility that will focus on electric and hybrid vehicles for its fleet services. Crews went to work shortly after the Eden Prairie City Council’s final approval for the development, which came as a formality after prior approvals and reviews from staff, commissions and the city council. The 6,600 square-foot office building, nearly half-mile track and electric vehicle charging stations will be parked near the GE Capital Fleet Services Headquarters, off 78th Street, east of Prairie Center Drive. GE executives, staff, Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens, City Manager Rick Getschow and others were present during a ceremonial ground-breaking for the center on Thursday, Sept. 22 – even though construction crews had already put their hydraulic shovels and movers into the ground. “We’re very excited about this,” GE: TO PAGE 20

The Eden Prairie City Council approved planning steps that could help

UHG start on the project before year’s end. It made approvals for the creation of a development agreement, re-zoning for the property and development concept review. Duo arrested, accused of numerous financial crimes BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two people suspected of stealing wallets and purses across the Twin Cities were arrested Sept. 21 at Hennepin County Government Center. The suspects, who had not been charged as of last week, are accused of several fraudulent financial transactions involving credit cards from the stolen wallets and purses in recent weeks, according to Bloomington police. The 25-year-old Minneapolis woman and the 32-year-old Brooklyn Center man were arrested in Minneapolis last week, where they were attending a parole violation hearing for the Brooklyn Center man, according to Bloomington Detective Carolyn MacAskill. Bloomington is coordinating the charges against the duo for several incidents that occurred in Hennepin County, as state statute allows for a felony charge with an automatic sentence of 48 months in prison when there are eight or more victims connected to identity theft charges, MacAskill explained. The duo is connect-

ed to several incidents outside of Hennepin County as well, MacAskill noted. On Aug. 19 two women reported that their wallets were stolen from Cowboy Jack’s restaurant in Bloomington. One victim said that she had arrived at approximately 6:30 p.m. and set her purse down on a railing while waiting with friends for a table. When a table was available about 10 minutes later the woman noticed that her wallet was missing from her purse. The wallet contained several debit and credit cards. The officer who took the report told the victim to contact police if any of the cards were used, according to MacAskill. The victim learned by 7:30 p.m. that an attempt to use one of her cards had been made at a nearby Target store. An attempt to purchase $400 in gift cards had been declined because the card the suspect attempted to use had already been canceled. Surveillance video provided a description of the suspect. Crimes FROM PREVIOUS PAGE The victim later reported that her cards were used for two purchases totaling $570 at a Target in Richfield, and smaller purchases at a Super America and Walgreens in Shakopee. The second victim at Cowboy Jack’s reported that her purse, containing credit and debit cards and a cell phone, had been stolen from a chair in the restaurant, according to MacAskill. The victim reported several transactions and purchase attempts had been made with her cards, including a $433 purchase from Target in Bloomington and five purchases from Kohl’s in Shakopee totaling $1,145. A patrol officer who heard the theft reports over his radio noticed a suspicious white vehicle parked in the corner of a Walgreens parking lot, away from other vehicles. The officer noticed that a man was seated inside the car, but did not stop to question him after running

the vehicle’s license plate through his computer. When the officer later inquired if the store had surveillance video of the vehicle in its parking lot he was informed by the store manager that three women had attempted to purchase two gift cards that evening. They were denied the purchase when they could not provide identification during the transaction. They left the store, getting into a white vehicle with a male occupant. The white vehicle was registered to the Minneapolis suspect, who had been arrested in Bloomington June 18 on suspicion of theft from a vehicle and financial transaction card fraud, according to MacAskill. Through the woman’s previous booking photos and driver’s license photo it was determined she was the suspect in the Target surveillance video, MacAskill noted. Additional surveillance video showed the same woman making purchases at stores where the stolen cards had reportedly been used. An unidentified woman was also shown using the stolen cards in some store videos.

Further investigation linked the suspects to August thefts reported by three victims at Santorini’s Restaurant in Eden Prairie and a wallet theft at Shorewood Restaurant in Fridley, MacAskill noted. Investigation of those incidents provided surveillance video that appears to show the Minneapolis woman involved in numerous transactions, according to MacAskill. The Brooklyn Center man is also identified in at least one video. The Minneapolis woman was also linked to September thefts at Mermaid Bar in Mounds View and Blue Fox Bar & Grill in Arden Hills through surveillance video taken at stores shortly after the reported thefts of credit and debit cards. Through investigation of the September incidents MacAskill was able to identify a woman seen with the Minneapolis suspect. The 33-year-old woman, as well as the 32-year-old Brooklyn Center man, face possible felony financial transaction card fraud charges. The third woman had not been arrested as of last week.

as that bank increases its lending to small businesses â&#x20AC;&#x201C; providing a strong incentive for new lending to small businesses so they can expand and create jobs. The SBLF is one part of the Obama Administrationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comprehensive agenda to help small businesses access the capital they need to invest and hire. The State Small Business Credit Initiative, which is also a key part of the Small Business Jobs Act, allocates $1.5 billion to new and existing state programs that will leverage private financing to spur $15 billion in new lending to small businesses and small manufacturers.

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Treasury has announced that an Eden Prairie community bank has received a total of $5 million as part of the next wave of funding provided through the Small Business Lending Fund. MidWest Bancorporation, Inc. of Eden Prairie has received $5.1 million through the fund. In August, Star Bank, which has an Eden Prairie location, said it had also been approved for a $5 million SBLF loan. The SBLF, which was established as part of the Small Business Jobs Act that President Obama signed into law, encourages community banks to increase their lending to small businesses, helping those companies expand their operations and create new jobs. Additional SBLF funding announcements will be made on a rolling basis in the weeks ahead. The SBLF helps small businesses meet this challenge by providing capital to community banks that hold under $10 billion in assets. The dividend rate a community bank pays on SBLF funding is reduced

Someone should benefit from my time in college The last week in September is Homecoming Week up at my alma mater, the University of Minnesota, Morris, and I've been invited to attend a number of alumni events as a representative of the newspaper industry and to enlighten students on the pros and cons of working in journalism. I think. To be frank, I'm not quite sure why they picked me — I highly doubt the criteria for selection included “dashing, handsome and has access to frequent columns in a newspaper.” For whatever reason, the alumni office asked me to take a drive up to Morris for a few days to join in the festivities, and I plan to be there. (Or, I am there. The conjugation of that verb and formation of the sentence around it entirely rests on when you, dear reader, are actually reading this column.) My time in college gave me many things: A healthy appreciation for seemingly endless insomnia, for example. Also, a solid understanding of how to buy exactly enough food to prevent

starvation, but still have money for rent, electricity, perpetually popping bicycle tires and the numerous copies I was somehow always making in this increasingly paper-free world. So, in the spirit of education and giving advice that somehow, at some point, might be useful to those who tread the path I too recently walked myself, I dug down deep and came up with some thoughts for those just starting off on whatever journey it is they are on. Then I sat down and wrote that column, touching on the finer points of how to succeed in college. It was a fine piece of writing, if I do say so myself, and I was initially pleased with it. Then I tore up the page and deleted the file. You see, the reason I made it

Phantom candidates waste everyone’s time Each year when election season rolls around, a deep sigh echoes through our newsroom. To be honest, many deep sighs. It can be a very frustrating experience. For the most part, the candidates are good to deal with. They respond to our requests for information, make themselves available for interviews and generally take their bid for election serious. But there are always a handful who don’t. I call them the phantom candidates. Yes, they file to run, but that’s the last you hear from them. In doing our due diligence,

we take above-and-beyond steps to try to track these people down to make sure they are included in our election coverage. We start out with an email generally, then a phone call and then a letter posted to their home address. From there we go to asking other candidates if WAHL: TO PAGE 11

from orientation to graduation has less to do with anything I learned while I was there, and far more to do with a simple mantra that was given to me shortly before I left for school. This most important piece is one I cannot claim as my own, because it was given to me by someone close to me. I won't divulge his name here for risk of, well, nothing in particular. I'm just not sure he's interested in seeing his name in print — again. For those communications and journalism students reading this, yes, I am using an anonymous source and, no, I haven't factchecked his information. Deviations aside, he said, quite plainly, “Don't forget why you're here.” Why you're here: That's the kicker. It's advice that can apply to anyone regardless of whether they're in school or not. There are so many distractions that can crop up; interpersonal drama, bills, clubs, parties and everything else can get in the way. Remembering why you're

spending the time, money and effort to fill every day to do what you do every day should be paramount. Don't let the minutia occupy your mind, learn to avoid the pitfalls and aim yourself toward what it is you want. Gather the knowledge. Staying on the path you've chosen isn't always easy, but one day you, too, may be able to offer somewhat trite platitudes to those who come after you. Just to add a little disclaimer — something I find myself doing on a regular basis in my columns — a four-year degree isn't for everyone. I have many friends who have happy, healthy, successful lives and careers without going to or graduating from college. The right path for some is the wrong road for others. Questions, comments? LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Running to bring more accountability To the editor: My name is Karla Bratrud, and I’m running for a seat on the Eden Prairie School Board. As a 16-year resident and parent of three children who’ve been educated in Eden Prairie since their first day of kindergarten, I’m proud of the phenomenal teachers, staff, parents and students associated with our schools. I believe, however, that our district has strained the good will that has always existed here. They’ve created an environment where teachers have been stifled and their input ignored, parents

were called “dissenting noise”, and it’s been implied that our community is racist. Additionally, the district has repeatedly contradicted itself. Parents were told for years that looping wasn’t for everyone; then suddenly it was to be mandated at Oak Point. Creating socio-economic diversity became a requirement at every school, but Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion was allowed to increase its enrollment without that requirement. We’ve recently been told the achievement gap in our district is narrowing, but if we’ve been able to accomplish that with curriculum changes and dedicated teaching, doesn’t it LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Letters FROM PREVIOUS PAGE weaken the argument for relocating 1,000 students to new schools? Our superintendent has chosen to leave at the end of this month. Those who opposed her initiatives might think our problems are solved. I’d like to encourage a different way of thinking. A superintendent’s authority is determined by the school board. Our board chose governing policies which gave considerable freedom to the superintendent, but failed on numerous occasions to demand accountability. The current board could have put the facilities plan on hold, in response to the legitimate concerns of the community, but they forged ahead. New board members need to restore common sense, fiscal responsibility, transparency and excellence to our school system. They should require the district to address the achievement gap through academic solutions, instead of blaming the community. They must insist that major initiatives be accompanied by research, long-term plans, detailed budget projections, and stakeholder feedback. Over the years I’ve grown a bit less diligent about tracking down these folks. Who would file to run for office and then not participate in the campaign? What is the purpose, other than to cost the governing entity money? I suppose it’s a way of “making a statement,” but what would that statement be. “I’m so hard up for attention I file to run for office and then don’t participate in the election.” That is the statement being made, as far as I’m concerned. Already in this year’s election we’ve come across several phantom candi-

Faith commentary: Leadership still matters BY JIM ERICKSON • GUEST COLUMNIST I’ve been reminded lately that leadership matters, big time. In fact, not much happens without effective leadership. Many of us have a love-hate relationship with leadership. We appreciate and acknowledge the need for effective, solid, gracious leadership, but we are also frequently frustrated by just the opposite. So, a question for you to consider – if you had to pick an Achilles heal for leadership, what would you pick? • Shady character qualities? • Lame skill set? • Inexperience? • Arrogance? While all these issues can be major issues, I would pick something else – insecurity. I think every leader struggles with insecurity at some level. I know I do, and it seems to me that this is normal. However, if as a leader I do not deal with my insecurities, they will wreak havoc in my ability to be effective. Let me explain. The problem with insecurities that are not addressed is that insecurity always puts the focus on me – my accomplishments, my reputation, my track record, my future. However, as a leader, my responsibility is to take the focus off myself and invest in those I lead – their accomplishments, their effectiveness, their future. You can see how the internal battle with insecurity is a big deal for all leaders. Our insecurities can quickly affect those we lead and the decisions we make. Here are a few questions you can ask to see how well you are dealing with your insecurities. 1. Am I more overly concerned with how others perceive me at work? Or am I focused on building up and releasing my team members to succeed? 2. Am I making decisions to “save face”

or am I putting the team first? 3. Am I comfortable acknowledging my insecurities appropriately? Or am I semiobsessed about covering them up? 4. Am I excited when my team members succeed? Or am I internally disappointed that I didn’t get more credit? Insecurity is a tricky thing and if leaders don’t deal with this “internal war,” it will affect those we lead in big and small ways. While I will be the first to confess that I have my insecurities and I hate to acknowledge them at times, I am grateful that Jesus has been helping me deal with them and overcome some of them. I’ll encourage you with these suggestions. • Remember, it’s not about you! It really is more rewarding to build up others, than to live for yourself. • Don’t obsess over your reputation. Don’t let what other’s think or perceive about you define you. • Let it go. Don’t harbor bitterness and lack of forgiveness toward those who treat you poorly. I have had the privilege of leading teams (large and small) now for almost 20 years and I can honestly say that the above suggestions work, if you apply them. However, there is a catch. I have needed the help, wisdom and strength of Jesus to change and learn to apply these principles. If you want to become more effective in dealing with your insecurities as a leader, I would point you toward living for Jesus. He is a fantastic leader and able to empower you to grow and overcome. Student security â&#x20AC;&#x201C; What every college student should know As college students get settled on campus, fighting fraud may not be their top priority. However, college students are susceptible to identity theft and the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) recommends that they take seven simple steps to protect themselves on campus. In 2010, 8.1 million Americans â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or 3.5 percent of the population â&#x20AC;&#x201C; became victims of identity theft, according to the 2011 Identity Fraud Survey conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research and sponsored by the BBB. The average mean cost of identity theft is $631 and the average time to resolve identity fraud is 33 hours â&#x20AC;&#x201C; time better spent studying. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friendly fraudâ&#x20AC;? accounts for 14 percent of all ID theft crimes. This means that new roommates and friends have just as much potential to commit dastardly identity theft as foreign-based scam artists phishing on the Internet.

And identity thieves â&#x20AC;&#x201C; friend or foe â&#x20AC;&#x201C; think nothing of dumpster diving (or rifling through unattended trash cans) for unshredded paperwork or taking mail from desk tops or unlocked mailboxes. They can even cruise social networking sites looking for personal tidbits that may unlock a wealth of information elsewhere. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In this day and age, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always trust your peers,â&#x20AC;? said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of the BBB. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extremely important for students to be vigilant in monitoring bank and credit card statements to spot unauthorized activity. The first phase of the project will include construction of a parking ramp, and two office towers, both eight stories tall, according to Bill Blanski of

architecture firm HGA. The second phase will consist of another parking ramp along with a 15story tower on the south side of the lot. The final construction phase will be close to the Southwest Light Rail stop, on the east side of site. That construction will include the fourth tower and another parking structure adjoining that, Blanski said. One of the key assets on the site is 15-acre section on the southeast corner of the site, which will be preserved as a conservation area. There is also a “necklace” of wetlands that will remain throughout the site, according to Blanski.

The Southwest LRT line, stretching from Minneapolis and ending in Eden Prairie, recently received approval for a preliminary engineering phase by the federal government. If the project goes through, the light rail could be complete by 2017 and connect to the UHG site. The plan provides an area for the light rail station, parking, car access, pedestrian access and water quality and stormwater management, according to a meeting document. UHG has also agreed to dedicate four lots to the city for the LRT. The city’s Community Development Director, Janet Jeremiah, said there

will be trails included in the project for pedestrians as well as internal trails for employees. UHG also plans to plant trees as part of the project, meeting approximately 85 percent of the tree volume required under city’s tree-replacement ordinance, and the rest of that green space will be made up with alternate landscaping, according to Miles Lindberg, a planner working with UHG. Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens questioned if alternative landscaping would keep with the purpose of the ordinance; Jeremiah said there was precedence for using alternative landscaping to meet the ordinance requirements.

GE Capital fleet group completed a nation-wide tour at its headquarters in Eden Prairie in July, introducing a variety of electric and hybrid vehicles to its clients. Last year, GE Capital made a pledge to supply 25,000 electric vehicles to its clients and its own GE fleet by 2015, said fleet services marketing and strategy officer Deb Frodl.

It then proposes to develop a New Horizon Daycare Center, according to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic development director, David Lindahl. The purchase agreement was written and ready for the Sept. 20 city council meeting, and Lindahl expects the city council will be able to review the proposal during its Oct. 4 meeting. The city purchased the 3.65-acre lot in 2004 for $1.96 million ($12.30 per acre), according to a recent meeting document. The city wanted the lot to build a station to serve the southwest portion of the city Only 1.3 acres was needed for the fire station, but sellers Duane and Curt Delegard would only sell the

entire parcel. The city knew it could sell approximately 1.3 acres to The Minnesota Department of Transportation, and it did in 2005 for $722,500. The city planned selling the rest for commercial development. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taken a while. There have been some courting periods, but they just never panned out. Lindahl said the city started working with Reliance Development in fall 2005. They wanted to build a 10,000 square-foot shopping center and charge $25 per square foot to tenants. After the city reduced the parking spot requirements for small commercial developments, after Reliance realized a stormwater pond would only allow an 8,000 square foot building and after it surmised $25 per square foot would be too expensive â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Reliance reduced its offer from $700,000 to $550,000. Then, in 2007, Reliance recognized

the market was waning and then pulled out claiming an â&#x20AC;&#x153;inability to make the numbers work,â&#x20AC;? according to Lindahlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s written background to the city council. Next, Doran Companies came around in August 2007. It wanted to build a strip mall. This was before the real estate market crash of 2008, when Doranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $550,000 offer wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t good enough, compared to other land sales in the area during the previous two years, according to Lindahl. In 2010, an offer for $350,000 to build a small convenience store was also rejected. Given the real estate market as of late, a possible long road to economic recovery and only two-thirds of the property is developable because of the stormwater pond, Lindahl and city staff consider the $450,000 offer a reasonable sale price, Lindahl said. Plus, it would also make for a good day care location, right off Highway 212, Lindahl said.

A homespun hobby helps Bloomington woman keep kids warm BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS On the coldest days this winter, Bloomington resident Patricia Halloway will have warm thoughts because 88 children she’s never met will have hats. Halloway recently donated 88 handknit hats to the Coats for Kids campaign sponsored by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. Making hats to donate wasn’t Halloway’s idea. Halloway, who is retired, learned to knit in her 20s, and she finds it relaxing. She wanted to find a way to use her hobby to help others. “I just like to knit, and I just was looking for a way to knit something for somebody,” she said. Then an aunt who lives in Indiana told Halloway she knits hats for local charities.

“I thought, ‘I could do that — I have all this yarn and all this time,’” Halloway said. So Halloway began knitting hats. Then she had to find somewhere to donate the hats. When she heard about the Coats for Kids campaign, she figured if children needed coats, they probably needed hats too. “I didn’t have coats, but I asked if they would want hats,” she said. That was about three years ago, and she has been making hats for the Coats for Kids campaign ever since. She has also begun donating knitted items to other charities. She said she makes about five or six hats a week in a variety of colors and sizes. Tommy Hanson The Eden Prairie resident caught four passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns and had a conversion run as Holy Family defeated Escanaba, Mich., 50-14 in Week 2 of the season. Hanson intercepted two passes, one for a touchdown, and caught three passes for 29 yards in a 40-12 victory over New Ulm last week. He also rushed six times for 44 yards.

No. 1 Eagles to host South Eden Prairie will try to retain its No. 1 state football ranking when it hosts Minneapolis South at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Aerie Stadium. The Eagles are 4-0 after defeating Hopkins in Lake Conference action last week. Eden Prairie features a stingy defense led by linebacker Drake Michaelson and linemen Anthony King-Foreman, Melvin DeSouza and Tyson Reinke. The Eagles’ offense has been effective with running back Andrew Larson piling up more than 100 yards rushing per game behind a monstrous line that is improving each week. Soccer doubleheader The first day of October arrives Saturday, and it is a big day for Lake Conference soccer. Edina will travel to Eden Prairie for a soccer doubleheader with the boys playing at 1 p.m. and the girls following at 3 at Aerie Stadium.

Victoria Lions Cross Country meet Runners from Eden Prairie, Edina, Minnetonka and Wayzata high schools will participate in the Victoria Lions Invitational cross country meet. Races will begin at 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Chaska Par 30 Golf Course. Twenty-three schools sent runners to the Lions meet last fall. Maria Hauger of Shakopee won the girls varsity race last year. Eden Prairie sophomores Hannah Jeter and Eryn Stewart should be in the lead pack of runners. The Eagles, ranked first in the state by the Associated Press, opened Lake play by scoring 35 first-quarter points and overpowering Hopkins for a 56-7 homecoming victory Sept. 23 before an announced crowd of 9,874 at Aerie Stadium.

Eden Prairie improved to 4-0 overall. Hopkins is 2-2. The Eagles left little doubt they will be the team to beat for the Lake championship. Eden Prairie had a rushing yardage advantage of 415-41 against Hopkins. Eagle senior running back Andrew Larson proved why is considered one of the state’s most dangerous offensive threats by carrying the ball 12 times for 172 yards and four touchdowns. Larson boosted his season rushing total to 587 yards in four games and has scored 11 touchdowns. However, the Eagles would like to build another long string of wins heading into the upcoming Section 2AA playoffs. Eden Prairie is 5-2-3 overall after losing two of three games last week. Wayzata snapped the Eagle streak with a 3-1 victory over Eden Prairie Sept. 22. Natalio Blanche scored the Eagle goal with an assist from Stephan Quie. A.J. Dewey tended goal for Eden Prairie. Bloomington Jefferson blanked Eden Prairie 2-0 Sept. 24. Eden Prairie began the week with a 1-0 victory over Burnsville Sept. 19. “We came out sluggish in both of our losses last week,” said Eden Prairie coach Vince Thomas. “I thought we outplayed both Wayzata and Jefferson but made key mistakes. “We have to come out playing better right from the start. Our opponents have scored first in five of our last six games.” In the previous week, Eden Prairie defeated Edina 5-1 Sept. 13. Medo Youssef scored two goals. Alex Aksoz, Zack Ainsworth and Blanche scored one goal each. “Blanche leads us in scoring with 11 goals,” said Thomas. “He has done a great job. “We have had balanced scoring and

SHORTS Johnson picks U of M Eden Prairie High School senior forward Jackie Johnson has verbally committed to play for the Gophers’ women’s basketball team. Johnson averaged 14.2 points as a junior for the Eagles last season as a junior. Johnson has been a starter on the EP varsity team since ninth grade. Johnson earned all-conference, AllMetro and All-State honors last season

as the Eagles finished second in the state tournament.

Our defensive coaches had a great game plan.” Hopkins’ defense was unable to contain Larson before he left the field in the second half as Eden Prairie reserves took over. “Larson had another great game and broke a lot of tackles,” said Grant. “I thought Larson and Jacob Woodring ran very well.” Larson scored all four of his touchdowns in the first half on runs of 1, 35, 4 and 41 yards. Eden Prairie’s Woodring finished with 66 yards on six rushing attempts. McGhee added 55 yards on four carries. Dillon Blesi provided 41 yards on seven rushes. Eden Prairie outscored its first four opponents 151-14. That scoring advantage might increase this week against a Minneapolis City Conference foe. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
