Bumper-to-bumper in the ’burbs Census Bureau: Most in west metro drive alone to work, few carpool BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS Rush hour traffic in the west suburbs could tell you most people drive themselves to work on a regular basis, but recent survey results shed light on the sometimes crowded suburban roadways. In Eden Prairie, Edina, Minnetonka, Bloomington and Richfield, not too many people take public transportation to work, a few carpool and even less ride their bike, according to three-year survey results from the U.S. Census Bureau. In those cities, 71-81 percent of those employed drive themselves to work, and carpooling is in single digits for most cities, according to the 2008-2010 American Community Survey results. It’s a trend that Commuter Services, commissioned in 2002 by the Interstate 494 Corridor Commission, has

EP poverty, unemployment stats reflect PROP traffic BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS
Upcoming opportunities to help PROP:
Recent national survey results show that most Eden Prairie families and residents are fairing well, but it also captured the thousands who seek help from the city’s food shelf and support services organization, People Reaching Out to Other People. PROP is a nonprofit that offers food, financial, career and other assistance to Eden Prairie and Chanhassen residents in need. It assists more than 3,000 individuals (including approximately 1,100 families), almost half of which are children, PROP Executive Director Anne Harnack said. Approximately 10-12 percent of its clients are from Chanhassen, Harnack noted, and the rest are from Eden Prairie. Those numbers reflect U.S. Census Bureau survey results that show 6.4 percent of Eden Prairie’s 60,000 residents are living in poverty. Results were from the 2008-2010 American Community Survey, released Oct. 27. Things have not been looking up. “The last month or so, we’ve seen at least 10 new families a week,” Harnack

Many of those new clients once had well-paying jobs and have cashed out their retirement accounts, savings and other assets to stay afloat, Harnack said. That influx of clients facing a new reality has prompted PROP to organize a pilot mental health counseling program, Harnack said. “People who used to meet basic needs and can’t anymore … they’re having some struggles,” Harnack said. For the past few months, a counselor has come in to offer private talks with not only clients, but also volunteers and staff, Harnack said. It took about a month for people to get comfortable with the idea, Harnack said, but the counselor is usually

The U.S. Census survey also shows that approximately 4 percent of Eden Prairie residents considered in the labor force are unemployed. Approximately 75 percent of Eden Prairie residents 16 and older were considered in the labor force. Job struggles have made PROP’s career assistance services popular, Harnack said. The nonprofit has set aside a room designated for career help. It has a computer, resume writing tips, job hunting resources and now two volunteers who help clients find employment and apply for jobs. “That’s been booming,” Harnack said. “That employment resource room
is booming right now.” Traditionally, the fourth quarter is the busiest of the year, Harnack said. She’s not sure why, but it could be rising utility costs, seasonal employment losses, school starting or the holidays. But overall, in the last two years, 30 percent of PROP’s clients come in new every year and about 30 percent leave, Harnack said. So, even though it keeps getting more clients, PROP is able to provide enough services for the one-third of clients who need 9-12 months of help, she said. The rest need more sustained help; 20 percent are disabled or elderly. They may maintain PROP support to keep a certain level of independence, Harnack said. The remaining 50 percent receive help for a variety of reasons, Harnack said. Regardless the reason clients are there, when the cost of food and gas goes up, it can have a big impact on families. It’s also part of the ongoing community support PROP needs to help the ever-changing 6 percent. Info: propfood.org.

Firefighters injured in Eden Prairie garage fire Three suffer injuries while fighting blaze BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS Three firefighters were reportedly injured during a garage fire in Eden Prairie Sunday, Nov. 6. A ceiling collapse caused two of the injuries. “They’re all out of the hospital treated and released,” Eden Prairie Fire Chief George Esbensen said Monday. “One ankle injury and a concussion.” The third firefighter had a sore, stiff neck, shoulders and legs after sheet rock fell from a 12-foot ceiling, also causing the other firefighter’s concussion, according to Esbensen. The third firefighter slipped while descending a slope in the yard. A garage was totaled from the fire and a house is inhabitable due to smoke and water damage, but
the family living in the home, located on the 13500 block of Caramel Trail, made it out safely, Esbensen said. The call came in around 5 p.m. Sunday, Esbensen said. He was the first one the scene, and upon arrival the attached garage was fully engulfed. The fire had worked its way from the outside of the garage to the inside, he said. The fire is under investigation, but appears to have been caused by ashes discarded into plastic garbage cans after a recreational fire from the previous night, Esbensen said. Ashes can linger for days before causing a fire if not discarded appropriately, Esbensen said. According to Eden Prairie records, the longest ashes have sat before causing a fire is seven days, he said. Esbensen said the proper way to discard ashes is keep them in a metal container for days, stirring them periodically until cold enough to move elsewhere.
Above, Eden Prairie firefighters assess house damage Monday after a fire Sunday. With so much debris from the devastating fire Sunday, the fire department went back to the home on the 13500 block of Caramel Trail after it re-ignited in a closet inside the home, according to Eden Prairie Fire Chief George Esbensen. A rare event, it was the second time in 10 years the department has been recalled to a scene, Esbensen said. (Photo by Paul Groessel – Sun Newspapers)

Madison said the commission has had contact with 600 large- and mediumsized businesses in the area, and it also has worked with multi-tenant office buildings. Once the commission can work with a company, employees become more aware of their commuting options. The commission can help people on an individual basis, so they don’t have to guide themselves through transitways, whether its by foot, pedal or petroleum. “Often times, people are not aware that resources are available to help them find someone to carpool with,” Madison said. The commission also provides traveling and route advice for bikers and walkers. Its outreach efforts have seemed to work. In 2010, Commuter Services estimates that it prevented 17.9 million vehicle miles from being traveled due to its outreach, based on surveys it con-

Despite the difficulties, people become more motivated to bike when gas prices increase, Madison said. “People are interested in getting a workout on the way to work and saving money at the same time,” Madison said. The Southwest Corridor Light Rail, expected to open in 2017, will also provide commuters a less gas-guzzling alternative. I may have been brainwashed But, really, books are good When I was a kid, I would frequently mispronounce words. Frequently. I bet there’s a study done by someone more educated than I on the subject clearly delineating why and how this works, but I’m chalking it up to the massive amount of reading I did as a child coupled with the obverse statistic showing the time spent socializing or speaking with other people. I learned to read and in the process picked up words that I’d never heard spoken before and thus did not know the correct pronunciation. If anyone were to need to shoulder the burden of this affectation, I would place that blame squarely on the shoulders of my mother for one particular reason: She made us read. Well, maybe “made” isn’t the right word for it. Instead, she blackmailed us with reading. Let me set the scene. It’s mid-afternoon, and my siblings and I are home from school but lacking any real interest in doing anything productive.
DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Managing Editor
Enter my mother. “Whoever’s not reading is getting chores.” Suddenly we’re all literary enthusiasts. Maybe it’s that childhood conditioning to view reading, books and overall literacy as work-avoided rather than as a chore itself that drove me to become a lifelong lover of literature. After all, post-high school, I went on to an institution of higher education and earned a degree in English, and I work with weaving words on a semi-daily basis. I believe in the idea that being able to effectively communicate is a key factor in getting ahead in this world. One could make the argument that the speed of communication and transmission of information in this day and age has made it impossible to be anything but an improv artist. We’re forced by the immediacy of our culture to think on our feet and get responses out more and more quickly. And what’s the advice pro-
fessional authors so often give to aspiring writers? Read. I’d offer that it doesn’t matter where you want to go careerwise; being able to communicate effectively is a required skill for any industry. Those siblings I mentioned went on to work in advertising, marketing and the culinary arts. For those of you who hoped I would make it through this column without making it even slightly self-referential, I’m sorry, but better luck next time. When I was thinking of the best way to tie the importance of literacy to one of my favorite topics – community involvement – I was sent a message about an organization that promotes reading and community all in one swell foop. Little Free Libraries are, to be simplistic, little wooden boxes full of books. With me so far? These little boxes are built, filled with books and put up on private property where people can access them, taking a book and leaving a book. Honestly, I think it’s genius. And not because we lack opportunities to find books in our communities. The Hennepin, Dakota and Anoka county library systems are laudable in their own right for the programs, services and books they
provide to the communities. Sure one can donate money or lobby for larger pieces of the municipal budget pie for the local library. I’m not saying residents of any community shouldn’t patronize their local library ‘cause they certainly should. But there are those who are unable to do these things. Putting a small library at the end of any street brings the books to the potential readers. There are already locations in St. Louis Park, Minneapolis and St. Paul, among others. Putting one up is as simple as, well, putting one up. The really nifty thing about this sort of movement is the ownership. The whole process requires the participants to participate in a much larger function than if they were simply a user of one of the county libraries. There’s an inherent trust in leaving something out for someone else to literally take. That trust is essential, I think, to the development of any community, and anything we can do, especially something as self-maintaining as a program like this, is great.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Faith commentary: Power shortage? BY JIM ERICKSON – GUEST COLUMNIST I don’t know about you, but when it comes to living the Christian life, I can use all the power I can get. Loving Jesus whole-heartedly and living according to his ways is not easy. It takes his grace and strength. In a similar way, when it comes to local churches fulfilling their mission – loving, serving and reaching the communities where they live, our nation and the world (Matt. 28:18-20) – we need all the power we can get. Right? When I consider the church’s mission I can quickly feel overwhelmed – the needs can feel insurmountable, our resources are limited and our time is already overcommitted. But, what if I were to tell you that there is a source or a supply of power for the local church that would empower her to fulfill her mission? Would you believe me? Well, I believe there is, but it’s somewhat of a controversial and divisive matter amongst Christian churches. So, let me be clear. As a local pastor I love local churches and my heart is not to be divisive or critical in anyway, rather to encourage and build up the body of Christ who gather in various churches. I’ll share my thoughts, but please promise to be gracious toward me! From my study of the Bible and personal experience, I think the Bible teaches that the power the local church needs to fulfill her mission is found in the supply of God himself through presence of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:1-8). The Holy Spirit was sent to empower the followers of Jesus to be witnesses to the ends of the earth. In other words, the Holy Spirit empowers the believer to love God, walk in righteousness and fulfill the great commission (Matt. 28:18-20). Also, the Holy Spirit is releasing gifts that empower the believer to build up the church (people) unto her mission. In 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14, the Apostle Paul pleads with the Corinthian believers to actively seek and use the gifts of the Holy Spirit with balance and maturity. To this
end, he gives some clear instructions as how to and not to use the gifts. Here’s my short summary: – Build in unity. When it comes to the use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we should always seek to be in unity with one another and with the mission of the church. Any use of the gifts that does not promote and preserve unity should be lovingly corrected. Use of gifts that leads to division and disunity is un-Biblical and does not honor God (1 Cor. 12:1-7, 24-26). – Build with love. No matter the gift or the person, we must always treat everyone with love. The gifts can never be an excuse for unloving behavior, attitudes or words. Power without love is not Jesus’ way (1 Cor. 13). – Build with maturity. One of Paul’s passions for the Corinthian Christians was that when they gathered together for their public meeting and service, they would be considerate of the non-believers, the new-believers and the seasoned believers. The mature Christian is mindful and intentional regarding all those in attendance. If the use of the gifts confuses or turns away some for the wrong reasons, we must figure out how to adapt. After all, the trinity is in unity. The mission of Jesus – to seek and save the lost – is not at odds with the mission of the Holy Spirit, to build up the body of Christ unto maturity and mission (1 Cor. 14:12, 23-25). There’s a lot more that could be said, but I will let you study for yourself and discuss these matters with your local church leaders. Again, my heart is not to be divisive or arrogant, but only to encourage all of us with one simple thought – If we need more power to build up the local church unto maturity and mission, why wouldn’t we build with the power that we’ve been given through the person and gifts of the Holy Spirit? If you are looking for a Biblicallybased resource, I would suggest “The Beginners Guide to Spiritual Gifts” by Sam Storms. Jim Erickson is senior pastor at City Hill Fellowship. PUBLIC SAFETY Woman charged with fraud after EP purchases A Minneapolis woman has been charged with fraud after allegedly stealing credit cards from a vehicle and using one to buy an iPad and gift cards at the Target store in Eden Prairie in January. The following details and allegations were included in a criminal complaint
filed Oct. 26 in Hennepin County District Court: An hour after the victim’s car was broken into Jan. 9, 2010, “many fraudulent transactions were made against her credit card accounts.” Victoria Louise Weber, 46, was identified as using a credit card at the Eden Prairie Target to purchase $428 in gift cards and a $675 iPad. In other cases, auto parts were pur-

chased using fraudulently purchased gift cards. The phone that the purchaser called from had a number linked to Weber from previous jail booking. The Eden Prairie investigator met with Weber at the Hennepin County Government Center, where she was making a court appearance. She was wearing shoes, pants and glasses that matched the surveillance video from the Jan. 9 purchases. She also had a matching purse. A bench warrant for her arrest has been issued from the Hennepin County Drug Court. In this incident, Weber has been charged with financial transaction card fraud, a felony that carries up to five years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine or both.
Eden Prairie man killed in Minneapolis shooting An Eden Prairie man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon, Nov. 5, in north Minneapolis. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Steven E. Meyer, 36. According to authorities, officers were called to a report of shots fired around 3:40 p.m. Nov. 5 near 43rd and Girard Avenue in north Minneapolis. When they arrived, officers found Meyer in his vehicle with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He had crashed his vehicle into a tree. It’s not clear whether Meyer was shot
while driving or if he had been shot outside his vehicle and was seeking medical help, police said. He was transported to North Memorial Medical Center where he later died. No arrests have been made, and the incident is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the police tip line at 612-692-8477.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.
FROM PAGE 1 The vote counts were also taken from the Secretary of State website. The numbers reflect a large voter turnout for off-year elections. In 2009, Eden Prairie School Board’s top vote getter was Ranee Jacobus with 1,598 votes. Preliminary election results match the BEEP (Bratrud, Estall, Espe and Parker) campaign that many community members have pushed for. To see the unofficial vote results, visit tinyurl.com/6vrzejd.

Eagles don’t let midseason slump define them BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Several weeks ago, Eden Prairie was not looking like a future state boys soccer champion. The Eagles had gone 2-3 in a fivegame stretch, and the season was at a crossroads. Coach Vince Thomas asked the players what kind of team they wanted to be – the one that started the season with such promise (going unbeaten in its first eight games), or the one that was getting mediocre results. When the Eagles lifted the state championship trophy last week, the answer was clear. Eden Prairie finished the season with nine consecutive victories, including a 3-1 win over Eastview in the Class AA title game Nov. 3 at the Metrodome. “We started the season well and gained a lot of confidence,” Thomas said. “Then we played Edina and although we beat them 5-1, I thought they actually outplayed us. Every shot we took seemed to find a corner. “We lost a couple of games, then played Edina again and lost 1-0. Some of our guys were a little frustrated.” The Eagles (16-3-3) quickly righted themselves. They had six shutouts during their season-closing nine-game winning streak, including a 2-0 victory over Maple Grove in the Class AA semifinals Nov. 1. Ninth-ranked Eden Prairie went into the championship game against Eastview as the underdog. The No. 1ranked Lightning had not lost in 21 games, and junior forward Mathew Gweh led all Class AA players in goals. Junior midfielder Medo Youssef scored 3 minutes, 47 seconds into the state championship game, and the Eagles kept Eastview on its heels the rest of the game. It stayed 1-0 until the final two minutes, when Natalio Blanche and Michael Vuolo scored for Eden Prairie.
Eden Prairie players, including Chris Kettell (5) and Mason Moore (27) celebrate after the Eagles defeated Eastview 3-1 in the state Class AA boys soccer championship game Nov. 3 at the Metrodome. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy – Sun Newspapers) Eastview’s Gweh scored with 40 seconds remaining, but by that time the goal was a footnote, not a game-changer. “I was scared until we got the second goal,” Thomas said. “Eastview has so much firepower. Any moment, they can score a goal. “I knew we were going to score. It was just a matter of how many they were going to score.” Said sophomore forward Abdul Omar: “We knew they were a great team and could score a lot of goals. We talked about how we should play against them and decided we should just play our game. And I thought we played a great game.” Eden Prairie outshot Eastview 17-7, including 11-3 in the second half, which was evidence that the Eagles didn’t just try to sit on the lead after scoring early. “I liked how we kept going after them,” Thomas said. Omar had a goal and two assists in
the Eagles’ 4-1 victory over Blaine in the Class AA quarterfinals Oct. 27. He had both goals – both in the final four minutes – of Eden Prairie’s semifinal victory over Maple Grove. Senior goalkeeper Alex Dewey made three saves to earn the shutout. The state championship is Eden Prairie’s second overall and first since 2002. Now the question is, can the Eagles do it again next year? They graduate 12 seniors, but several of their key players are underclassmen, including the top five scorers. “I’m already looking forward to next year,” Omar said, “because I think we can do it again.”
All-tournament Omar, who had three goals and three assists in the state tourney, was one of four Eden Prairie players named to the all-tournament team. Also selected were Dewey, Blanche and junior attacker Roman Derevyanko.

Larson carries EP past Tonka Defensive game ends with only 1 touchdown BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie halfback Andrew Larson has played the last few games with a knee injury, but he still managed to lead the Eagles past Minnetonka in the Class 5A, Section 6 football title game Nov. 4 at EP’s Aerie Stadium. Larson, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior, scored the only touchdown of the game on a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter as the Eagles moved on to the state tournament with a hard-fought 6-3 win. “You know, Andrew isn’t 100 percent,” said Eden Prairie head coach Mike Grant. “But whatever percentage he is, it was good enough tonight.” Grant was impressed with the effort Minnetonka showed. Earlier in the season, Eden Prairie had blanked the Skippers 16-0. The rematch was much closer. Defensively, Minnetonka was in top form with linebackers Beau Bates and Jack Newell leading the assault. Safety Charles Webb also had a good game along with the Singleton twins, DeAndre and KeAndre, at cornerback. “Minnetonka is a top-three team in the state,” said Grant. “We had to dig in to get it done.” “We came here tonight to win,” Minnetonka coach Dave Nelson told his team as the players knelt in a circle after the game. “We invested a ton in this season, and we shot for the moon. Your effort tonight was awesome. The sting of the loss
will eventually go away. Then we’ll remember the good times we had this season.” The teams played a scoreless first quarter, and then Minnetonka took the lead in the second quarter when Vinni Littieri kicked a 32-yard field goal. “We had a couple of chances in the second half, but couldn’t capitalize,” said Nelson. The best chance came early in the fourth quarter when KeAndre Singleton made a big hit to cause a fumble and his brother DeAndre pounced on the loose ball at the Eagle 34-yard line. Two penalties later, the Skippers were backed up to midfield, and a scoring chance went by the boards. When the Skippers had to punt, they got a terrible roll and the kick ended up 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage. That was the opening Eden Prairie needed. The Eagles’ touchdown drive covered eight plays and 57 yards. Five of those eight plays were rushes by Larson. The last 17 yards came on his sweep around left end that took him to the end zone. EP’s junior quarterback Grant Shaeffer made the key first down of the drive when he bootlegged 7 yards around right end on third and four. “I told our guys in the huddle, ‘We’re not losing this game,’” said Shaeffer. “Minnetonka knew we were going to run the ball, and they tried to strip it on every play. The offensive line stepped it up and got us to the end zone.” “On that drive we wanted to score and run out the clock,” said Larson. “I told the offensive linemen, ‘I believe in you.’ And they did a great job of opening holes for

That was as physical a team as we’ve played all season.” “We were tired at the end,” said Grant. “But you’ve got to remember Minnetonka was tired, too. It was a great win for our team, the kind of win they will remember forever.” Eden Prairie defensive captain Drake Michaelson agreed. It was a special game. He made key tackles on the Tonka running backs and picked off a pass in the final minute to seal the victory. “This was our most challenging game,” he said. “And it was by far the most physical game. Minnetonka’s offensive line is big.” Michaelson watched the Eagles’ scor-
ing drive from the sidelines and breathed a sigh of relief when Larson crossed the goal line. “I was praying he’d get in,” he said. “Intercepting that pass was the perfect way for me to finish my last home game. I couldn’t be happier coming off the field tonight.” The win in the section title game gives Eden Prairie a 9-1 record. Minnetonka finished the season 8-3. Eden Prairie will play Anoka (9-1) in the state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Osseo High School. “Anoka starts 21 seniors, and it’s a team with a lot of experience,” said Grant. “We have only seen a little bit of film on them. They’re not as big as Minnetonka, but they are another physical team.”
Eagles advance to second state Class AAA volleyball tournament BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie will have two instrumental elements at the Class 3A state volleyball tournament Nov. 10-12 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. One is hitting phenom Sarah Wilhite and the other is a “good luck charm.” The only other time the Eagles advanced to state was in 2004 when current assistant coach Courtney Cowles was the starting setter. Current head coach Chad Becker called Courtney the common bond in the state tourney runs. Wilhite added to her school record for kills in a season and in a career by leading the offensive attack against Wayzata in a 3-1 Eagles victory to claim the Section 6 title last Thursday. The 6-foot-1 junior provided 37 kills with just three hitting errors in four
games. In a closer five-game victory over Hopkins in the semifinals, Wilhite had 31 kills, 16 digs and five service aces. Eden Prairie (24-6) was given the No. 4 seed at state and opens play at 9 a.m. Thursday against Owatonna (22-8). The winner takes on either No. 1 seed Blaine (27-2) or Hutchinson (25-3), 9 a.m. Friday. The title game is at 5 p.m. Saturday. “It was the best offensive night in her career,” notes Becker about the show of strength by Wilhite against Wayzata. “The second time we played Wayzata this year they bottled her up really well. This time Sarah changed up what she normally was doing when she typically hits every ball hard. She started with four or five roll shots where she takes a little off the ball and drops it over the
defense into the open middle. She mixed it up to stay one step ahead of the defenders.” Senior Ellen Piechowski had 19 kills and 22 digs against the defending section champ and two-time state runnerup Wayzata. Junior Jamie Cairncross added 18 digs and five ace serves, including the last point in the 30-28 final game win. Junior hitter Hannah Redman added 15 digs, making it two straight matches when five players had double digits in digs. Junior setter Maddie Reese provided 52 set assists. Against Wayzata, Eden Prairie burst to a 24-12 first-game lead before the Trojans ran off seven straight points. The Eagles won 25-19 but Wayzata had gained some confidence, says Becker. In the second game the Eagles trailed
most of the way, including 22-19. Becker adds, “We had a game plan for when we found them in a weaker player rotation and came back to win 26-24.” Wayzata won the third game 25-15 before the teams battled in a long-lasting fourth game that ended 30-28 for the Eagles. “We were two evenly matched teams all year and I am still surprised we beat Wayzata three times,” said Becker. “Quite frankly, if it had gone to five games I don’t know if I would have made it.” If so, it would have been the second straight gut-wrenching match. Hopkins took the Eagles to the brink in the fifth game of the semifinal match. Eden Prairie won 25-23, but lost the next two 25-23 and 27-25 to face elimination. EP battled back to win 25-16 and 16-14.

Eden Prairie High runners finish near the top at state Class AA meet BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Despite going without an individual standout, the Eden Prairie boys cross country team was able to stand out at the state Class AA meet last Saturday in Northfield. The Eagle boys finished fifth out of 16 teams, just eight points out of third place and Section 6AA team champ Edina. Of the top eight teams, only Eden Prairie did not have an All-State individual runner. “That shows what a consistent team effort the boys made and that each member was valuable in this effort,” said coach Jeff Lindlief. “In addition, consider that not one of these guys have ever competed in a state cross country meet before. It was a first-time experience for them.” Lindlief said although the Eagles will lose valuable seniors, the younger runners were already discussing what they want to accomplish next year soon after the state race. “Going into the state meet, I felt that if we ran fifth place or better, the day would be considered successful,” adds Lindlief. “The guys ran really smart, not getting sucked out by a fast pace at the start. Then
they made continual advances towards the front of the race.” Sophomore Cal Lawton (16) paced the Eagles at state in the team competition as he did with a sixth place finish at the section meet. Seniors Ricardo Reyes (22) and Andrew Hansen (24) played valuable roles in the team’s high finish, as did sophomore Jacob Young (34). Next came junior Henry Zurn (41), junior Ryan Stewart (52) and sophomore Jack Odzer (55). Lindlief praised the effort of sophomore Hannah Jeter (21), who earned AllState status. “Based on the people she has competed against all year, Hannah finished very well,” adds her coach. “She ran tactically smart, getting between 40-50th place at the 800 mark and then moved up to between 1015th place by the 1.5-mile mark.” Last year, Jeter competed on the Eagle state championship cross country team and competed at the Nike National Championships. “Hannah can add this race to her resume of competing in high-level events and will help her lead the team back to state next season,” adds Lindlief.
