Despite some rain before the show, followed by some hot weather, people came to see all types of aircraft and meet accomplished and storied aviators.

Don’t tell Eden Prairie residents the economy is on its way back up. According to compiled Hennepin County foreclosure reports, Eden Prairie saw more sheriff sale foreclosures in 2010 than it did in 2008, when Hennepin County reached its foreclosure peak after the housing market crisis. For Eden Prairie, the 2010 trend is carrying over to 2011. In 2010, there were 228 total foreclosures in Eden Prairie, based on data obtained from the Property Tax Division of Hennepin County’s Taxpayer Services. Since January, there were 106 foreclosures in the first six Weekly Super Savings! months of 2011, according to sheriff ’s foreclosure reports. RelocateAmerica, which offers directories to about 6,000 communities for those looking to relocate, named Eden Prairie among its “Top 100 Places to Live.” Plymouth, Rochester and Minneapolis also made the list. A final top 10 list is expected on Aug. 2. People can vote online for a city they think should make the top 10, but online votes will not be the only basis for determining the top ten cities, said company President and CEO Steven Nickerson. Nickerson said RelocateAmerica has been coming out with a top 100 list for 14 years, except in 2001, when the company had “other projects that were higher priority,” Nickerson said. This is not the first list for Eden Prairie. Many people are aware that CNN and Money magazine named Eden Prairie the best place to live in America last year. The city has made Money’s list since 2006, and the Twin Cities alternative newspaper City Pages named Eden Prairie the “Best Suburb” in its annual “Best of the Twin Cities” compilation. In April, Reader’s Digest staff passed off a $1,000 “stimulus check” to Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens as part of the publication’s “We hear you America,” tour featuring stops at 100 cities in 100 days. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report named Eden Prairie among its “Best Healthy Places to Retire.” When considering its top 100 list, RelocateAmerica uses its own standards, Nickerson said. “We do not look at anybody else’s list. … A lot of the community profiles we get come from cities,” he said. Nickerson said the list is also based on the staff ’s research and criteria, not for marketing reasons or trying to make any kind of deal with cities.

To create the top 100 list, Nickerson said the company collects cities’ data starting in January, looking for residential real estate information, unemployment level, schools’ quality, businesses in town, city services and other quality of life criteria. The list criteria doesn’t change yearto-year, he said, but in the last couple years, there has been an emphasis on cities’ economic conditions. He said they also try to reach out to city staff, elected officials or other leaders when compiling the list and other city profiles. Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens, Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce President Pat MulQueeny and city of Eden Prairie communications staff all said they have not had contact with RelocateAmerica. However, feedback necessarily doesn’t come from city leaders, Nickerson said, to help create city profiles, they send thousands of surveys out to cities every November and usually hear back from about 750 cities. When asked about how much significance he thinks people give his company’s list and other best places to live lists, Nickerson said the response to RelocateAmerica’s list are usually mixed. After they put out their list, Nickerson said he will get an email from a city’s resident praising the company for naming his city, followed by another email from a resident that says something like, “you have to live here to see how bad it is.” “Everybody’s got their opinion. We’ve been here 14 years. We take this seriously. The list is not for sale. … We enjoy doing it. Who’s getting paid? BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Last week, when Gov. Mark Dayton offered to accept Republican lawmaker’s June 30 budget proposal, with new conditions, it appeared the two-week government shutdown would come to an end. During the shutdown, with thousands of state employees out of work since Dayton and legislators did not agree on a 2011-13 budget by the June 30 deadline, the issue of elected officials receiving pay or not surfaced. In the House of Representatives, legislators who declined payment during the shutdown can choose to get paid retroactively once the shutdown is over, according to Greg Crowe, co-controller for the House. But senators will not have the option of receiving retroactive pay, according to Mary Ferguson with the Office of the Secretary of Senate. For legislators representing Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and Eden

Prairie, things were pretty split. All of the representatives, except one, deferred their pay and most planned on not taking retroactive payments after the shutdown. All four of the senators kept their pay. Of course, it’s not always that cut and dry. For those who took pay, some throughout the House and Senate have said they will donate their checks to local charity. Legislators can also get paid for meetings they attend, known as per diem pay. In both the House and Senate, per diem payments were suspended for all legislators during the shutdown. After attempting to reach all legislators representing the four cities of Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and Eden Prairie by phone and most cases email as well, several indicated their intentions regarding retroactive payments and why they did or did not accept payments. Not all could be reached, however.

Area legislators face tough questions following the state shutdown: Did they take payments? Will they seek repayment after the shutdown?

Here’s the breakdown for legislators representing the four cities:

Legislators who received payments during the shutdown • Sen. Geoff Michel, R-41, Edina In an email, Michel said he has not taken per diem pay since the end of the regular legislative session May 23. “As deputy majority leader in the Senate, and part of the legislative leadership team negotiating with Governor Dayton, I continue to receive the legislative salary of $31,000 per year,” Michel said in an email Wednesday, July 13. • Sen. Ken Kelash, DFL-63, Bloomington and Richfield Kelash did accept pay because he didn’t notify the proper Senate office in time, he said. He’ll most likely give his pay during the session to a charity in his district, he said. “It’s a symbolic thing, and in the end

it wouldn’t matter if we were being paid a little bit of money … or an outrageous amount of money … ” he said. • Rep. Kirk Stensrud, R-42A, Eden Prairie; Sen. Dan Hall, R-40, Bloomington; and Sen. David Hann, R42, Eden Prairie, did accept pay during the shutdown and could not be reached.

Legislators who delayed payments • Rep. Ann Lenczewski, DFL-40B, Bloomington Lenczewski said she does not plan on taking retroactive pay after the shutdown. • Rep. Make your own list, good or bad, for Eden Prairie pI would take in the lists with some salt. How many grains is up to you. Yes, Eden Prairie is named among many groups’ favorite places to live. Most recently, it made RelocateAmerica’s “Top 100 Places to Live.” It’s on page 6 if you want to read a little about it. It’s good to be on these lists. It gives the city some outside attention. And, after all there are a lot of trails, parks space and other amenities for all residents who are lucky enough to live here. It’s safe. Generally speaking, the biggest safety concern upstanding Eden Prairie citizens (and there are nearly 60,000 of you) have to worry about is keeping their car locked at night. Some people actually give the city’s safety too much credit and leave their car unlocked with their expensive goods inside. That’s when those goods leave the car and end up in a police report.

Listen to the police department on this one – please lock your cars and close your garages. Anyway, for those who don’t live in town, it’s also a good place to visit. There are a lot of places to shop, eat, exercise, work, check out a band, take the family, watch fireworks or go for a stroll. The different publications that put Eden Prairie on bestplaces-to-live lists are justified. Because in the scheme of things, the problems here are relatively minor compared to other cities and neighborhoods in the country. However, I think every resident who lives in town – whether in a million-dollar household or a subsidized apartment – all have a different opinion, and that’s what

we should respect the most. That goes for the businesses and organizations that work here, the city officials that make policy decisions and the guests who arrive on a warm, sunny day to go for a swim. Everyone has a different opinion. So, when you’re running for office, writing a letter, sending a praise-laden or nasty email to a

list-maker or making your case about how great or bad Eden Prairie is while at the dinner table, you don’t have to hold up a glossy magazine with the city’s name on it to make your point. Take it from your own experience. You make Eden Prairie what it is, and you can trust that. But, you know, it’s always nice to put an “A” up on the fridge.

call an “IOU.” So for our schools the 3.4 percent increase isn’t being paid in cash, it’s being paid with a promise of paying later, or perhaps maybe not, if the next Legislature decides not to repay it. This is not a truthful way of dealing with people. Minnesota’s creditors aren’t buying it either. They have recently downgraded the credit quality of Minnesota’s bonds. In the long term, that makes everything more costly for taxpayers. Everyone on all sides of this debate understands that future spending at the state level must be kept under control. Difficult choices need to be made as to what we are willing to pay for

and how we are willing to pay for it. First and foremost, this takes a recognition that we are all in this together. This can’t be about winners and losers. It will take honest and open discussion, and consideration of all of the facts, even the inconvenient ones, and we need to get on with it. Greg Olson Eden Prairie

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The whole truth, and nothing but the truth To the editor: In presenting her arguments in favor of the Republican budget plan, Rep. Jenifer Loon has described it as a plan that increases spending without increasing taxes. This is not the whole truth. While income tax rates under this plan may not rise, the consensus is that property taxes on homeowners will. Most credible estimates are as much as $1.2 billion during the next four years. For families, these taxes are the least fair and least affordable, particularly at a time when so many of them are struggling just to

make their house payments. This will not serve our interests, either in paying for the spending burden that Republicans want to shift back onto school districts and local governments, or in terms of reversing the downward spiral in home values. An increase in income taxes on the wealthiest 1 percent would do much to mitigate this. Loon touts the 3.4 percent increase in spending for K-12 schools in the Republican budget. But a major component of paying for their overall budget is a funding “shift” of up to 40 percent of the scheduled payments to K-12 districts over the next 2 years. A shift is what most of us

Letters FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Eden Prairie to abandon its parking lot project inside Birch Island Woods Conservation Area. Even though the approvals have been made, and the bulldozer might roll into the conservation area any day now, we have submitted citizen petitions (requests) to the city council to halt the project during its Tuesday, July 19 meeting. Our initiative is made in service to the residents and taxpayers of Eden Prairie, environmental prudence and best practices, and our colleagues at the city and Nine Mile Creek Watershed District – the watershed district has granted $25,000 to pave the parking lot with high-tech, pervious pavement to reduce rainwater runoff which can pollute wetlands and lakes. City hall has actually pinned a green bow on the project. But, a pig wearing an “Earth Day” cap is still a pig, and a parking lot is still a parking lot. The car-centric project dismisses the fact that Birch Island Woods is the

most accessible conservation area in town. A parking lot is not needed. The woods are the only such sanctuary in town on the regional bike trail that crosses the entire city. Residents can bike to the woods along the Crosstown Highway and Edenvale Boulevard Trails. Folks in northern Eden Prairie walk, jog or ride bikes on streets and trails to get there. Employees from nearby businesses hike to the woods during lunch breaks. Unlike other conservation areas, the woods have two perimeter streets where parking space is bountiful – and seldom used. Matthew 9:12-13 It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. I know a guy who could stand to lose a 100 pounds. It was suggested to him that he start swimming laps at a local club. His response was, “No way, I’d need

to lose some weight before I show up at a gym.” Sounds backward, right? A gym would be a great place for him to go. I think I’d lose my temper if I ever saw someone at a gym making fun of someone else at the gym because they were large. That would be like making fun of someone in the ER because they had a broken arm. That’s exactly where they’re supposed to be! That’s what Jesus is getting at in the verse above. “It’s not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” I wonder if there aren’t some people out there in

newspaper land who are afraid of God because they think he’s mad at them. Perhaps you don’t feel comfortable praying because you think God wouldn’t listen to you anyway. Maybe you feel like you’ve got to get your life back on track before you ever darken the doors of a church again. I mean this in the kindest possible way … you’ve got it backward. It’s not the healthy who need a doctor, it’s the sick. In other words, it’s people like you and me who need God; people who struggle with sin, people whose relationships

A Cub Scout community Support less fortunate youth by donating used Scouting uniforms BY ALLY SERACKI • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Cub Scouting makes a difference in boys’ lives for many reasons; building their character and teaching them to work with others have been among the most important. Being part of Den 6, within Pack 66, is no exception. Pack 66 is sponsored by St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, St. Paul. Den 6 is relatively new and was formed through an effort of St. Bernard’s volunteers to reach out to their refugee community. For the den of 10 boys, all originally from Southeast Asia, not only has Cub Scouting helped them reinforce relationships but it has also helped them break down language barriers. For Den 6, specifically, Scouting has reiterated a lot of what they learn in school, but through experience. “We trick kids to learn … through having fun,” said Vincent Haen, adult leader for Pack 66. Having the Scout uniforms connects them as well. “When they put on the uniforms, it makes them feel united,” Haen added.

Boys thankful for donations For Den 6, each family’s general economic situation is, as Haen would describe, “your typical refugee story.” What some children may take for granted,

these boys cherish and appreciate. Haen described a time when the boys needed water boots for an outdoor activity. They received boots, free of charge, that some boys might refuse to wear. But the Den 6 boys didn’t care if the boots were pink as long as their feet stayed dry. On a case-by-case basis, a Scouting office determines through a uniform exchange what donated uniforms to give out to dens for free and reduced prices. All of Den 6 is receiving discounted or free uniforms. Especially for the families who could not otherwise afford it, the assistance is a relief. Though many of the boys’ parents do not understand a lot about Cub Scouting, they realize it is getting their sons involved in something that is crucial. “Parents like getting them in the community,” Haen said. Supporting the uniform exchange program is easy during the month of July. Used uniforms may be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Find locations at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Nine Mile Watershed seeks applicants for board positions The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants for two vacancies on the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District Board. Terms for members Corrine Lynch and Robert Kojetin are expiring. Lynch is seeking reappointment. Kojetin is not. Nine Mile Creek Watershed District Board members may not be public officers of the county, state or federal government and must be a resident of the district. The district is located in southern and western Hennepin County and includes parts of Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Richfield.

The district’s five-member board develops a comprehensive plan for the conservation of natural resources and coordinates management of water and land resources covering an area approximately 50 square miles that drains into Nine Mile Creek. It is helpful for board members to have a background in water conservation, farming, development, law, engineering, environment or public administration. Meetings are held about once a month. Charges: Three broke into St. Louis Park’s closed Eliot School The abandoned Eliot School in St. Louis Park attracted the wrong kind of attention, according to criminal charges filed July 8 in Hennepin County District Court. Minneapolis resident Nathaniel Richard Yunger, 22; his brother Joseph Yunger, 20, of Minneapolis; and Eden Prairie resident Dylan Frederick, 18, were all charged with possession of burglary or theft tools. If convicted of the felony, they each face a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a fine of $5,000. All three have been released from custody. Bail had been set at $3,000 each. Court documents provide the following account and allegations: St. Louis Park police arrived on the scene of a possible burglary in progress at Eliot School, 6800 Cedar Lake Road July 7. The St. Louis Park School District had closed the building as both a school and community center. Officers observed flashlight activity inside the building. Shortly before 2 a.m., police warned of canines and asked those inside to exit with their

hands up. Police arrested the two Yunger brothers and Frederick when they left the building. The inside of the building “was noticeably damaged,” police found. A faucet had been turned on and flooded a bathroom on the lower level. Officers found a black backpack containing a crow bar, hammer and metal mallet inside the door the suspects exited. They also found a flashlight and bodily fluid cleanup kit further down the entryway. Joseph Yunger told police they knew the former school was abandoned and wanted to explore it. They used the crow bar to pry open the door. He said the group also broke a main office window and door and some clocks. Frederick also said the group used the crow bar to enter the building. He said they took turns hitting an office window with the flashlight. Frederick said Nathaniel Yunger had sprayed a fire extinguisher into the building’s gymnasium and had turned on the faucet to a washbasin, which they were unable to stop. -COMPILED BY SETH ROWE

Q. What happens to the ashes after cremation? A. Your cremated remains (ashes) will be handled according to your written instructions. They may be picked up by your survivors, or will be delivered or mailed for a fee.

Q. At the time of death, what is the cost for the cremation service? A. The cost of the basic cremation service which includes removal of the body from the place of death, cremation, filing of the necessary papers and cardboard container suitable for burial is presently $1395.00 for members. This is payable at the time services are rendered. The charge to non-members, whom we also service, is more.

At the time of death, our counselors are available to assist your survivors in arranging for memorial services, obtaining certified copies of the death certificate, cemetery services, grave makers and monuments, obituaries for the newspaper and paperwork for Social Security and Veterans’ benefits.

Q. How do I join the Cremation Society of Minnesota? A. Fill out the registration form and mail it to our office with a one time registration fee of $15.00 per person. This fee defrays the cost of setting up and maintaining your records. It is not refundable nor an offset to the final service costs. COMMUNITY NOTES Help for homeowners facing foreclosure Homeowners facing foreclosure due to involuntary unemployment, underemployment or medical issues may be eligible to benefit from a new federal program called the Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program. The deadline for loan applications is 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 22. Under this program, more than 1,400 Minnesota homeowners will receive up to $50,000 in interest-free loans over the next two years to help pay mortgage costs. The loans are also 100-percent forgivable for homeowners who stay in their home for five years following the program's completion. Homeowners eligible to apply for the federal program must meet the following several criteria: • Have faced an income decline of at least 15 percent due to involuntary unemployment, underemployment or medical issues. • Have been unable to make their mortgage payment for at least 3 months

prior to June 1, 2011 • Reside in the mortgaged property. The government is also warning homeowners to avoid scams. There is no charge to apply for EHLP, and filling out forms is simple. COMMUNITY NOTES EP Girl Scouts learn a little about government While on their way to a Girl Scout camp near Hayward, Wis., the Prairie Sun Girl Scouts stopped to tour the Burnett County Government Center in Siren, Wis. The tour was June 23 and hosted by Girl Scouts from the Unity Service Unit of Balsam Lake, Wis. The Girl Scouts took in a tour with Capt. Terry Nesvold of the jail and communications center. Capt. Nesvold was a Boy Scout who earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award as a youth. The scouts then joined Deputy Mike Anton at his squad car in the parking lot to learn about law enforcement technology. Clerk of Courts Trudy Schmidt, who is a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient, showed the scouts the courtroom, the judge’s chambers, and the clerk’s office. An added bonus, Schmidt shared with them that she had been a Girl Scout from elementary school as a Brownie Scout all the way through graduating from high school as a

Following the tour, Lisa Johnson from Restorative Justice of Northwest Wisconsin and her therapy dog, Nana, explained to the girls about what restorative justice is and why it is important for victims, offenders, and the community in healing from the effects of crime. The civic event for the Unity and Prairie Sun Girl Scouts was part of the “Always a Girl Scout” week, where more than 50 million women who were involved in Girl Scouts celebrate their Girl Scout experience and 100 years of inspiring generations of girls who joined the scouts.

Eden Prairie Girl Scouts win Bronze Award Hannah Boyles, Allison Cadden, Rachelle Johnson, and Ellie Thomas of Girl Scout Troop 10824 in Eden Prairie have completed the requirements for a Junior Girl Scout’s highest award, the Girl Scout Bronze Award. The Girl Scout Bronze Award recog-

nizes a girl’s commitment to excellence as she develops skills and values to meet present and future challenges in her life. To earn this award, the girls had to design and carry out a plan of activities to show their promise to help others, improve the community and world, and become the best she can be. The girls elected to complete a set of projects focused on local and international poverty. As a first step the girls researched poverty and presented their findings to the troop leaders of Prairie Sun Service Unit in Eden Prairie. For their international project, the girls organized an event for 141 participants to pack 38,880 meals and donate $1,134 to Feed My Starving Children in Chanhassen. In addition, the girls labeled 860 mini M&M containers for the collection of future donations to Feed My Starving Children. On a local basis, the girls worked at Community Emergency Services in Minneapolis repacking 600 pounds of potatoes into family size servings and making cards for distribution to home bound individual through Meals on

EP dance team camp registration due July 25 The Eden Prairie Dance Team will conduct its annual Kids Dance Camp, 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 11-12 at the Eden Prairie High School. Michael is the son of Sue and Jim Noyes of Tokyo, Japan, and Bill and Beth Bocchino of Jacksonville, FL. Jennifer and Mike were married at a Nuptial Mass at the church of St. Bonaventure in Bloomington on June 25, 2011. Jennifer is a 1999 graduate of Bloomington's John F. Kennedy High School, and a 2003 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a BA degree in Organizational Communications. She is currently a Merchandising Presentation Manager at Target Corporate Headquarters in Minneapolis. Mike is a 2000 graduate of West Springfield High School (MA), and a 2004 graduate of Jacksonville

University (FL) where he was commissioned as a submarine officer in the U.S. Navy. After six years on active duty, Mike moved to Minnesota in September 2010. He is currently employed as a Quality Engineer for Boston Scientific Corporation in Arden Hills, and is a member of Commander, Naval Forces Japan in the Navy Reserve in Minneapolis. Jennifer and Mike met in Hawaii in 2007, when Jennifer was vacationing (to visit a high school friend), and Mike was stationed on the USS Olympia (SSN 717) in Pearl Harbor. After a long distance relationship and many crosscountry flights, they were engaged in November of 2009 at the Nine Mile Creek Bridge in Bloomington (where Jennifer's parents had become engaged 38 years earlier). After a week's honeymoon trip to the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia, the newlyweds reside in Bloomington.

Anne Harnack, PROP’s executive director, said she’s seen these numbers on a regular basis. Many people who come to the food shelf and financial assistance nonprofit come too late. “Most of the people that are in foreclosure or are losing their homes tend to come to us late in the process, and what we tend to provide is resources and food,” Harnack said. They can help people who are beyond the foreclosure process, looking for a place to rent, she said. If they can’t help, they can always point clients to other resources. “People should come to us sooner than later, because if we

A workshop in Eden Prairie has been scheduled 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 4, at the Eden Prairie Library. Workshops are for anyone who wants to learn how to prevent going into foreclosure, people who are late on mortgage payments or renters whose landlords could face foreclosure. The Minnesota Homeownership Center, which supports and provides resources for about 40 nonprofits in Minnesota, is providing an Emergency Homeowners Loan Program. The program, funded through the department of Housing and Urban Development, can provide up to $50,000 in support for catching up on mortgage payments and supplementing future payments. The program has some specific criteria to qualify, and a lottery is expected since there will be high demand, said Ed Nelson, marketing manager for Housing and Urban Development. Six teams from the South Hennepin League, six from the North Hennepin, two from the North End League and two from Wright County will vie for state tournament berths during the Tenth District playoffs Thursday, July 21, through Sunday, July 24, at Wintercrest Park in Coon Rapids. Eden Prairie, the defending state champion, is among the district favorites along with Edina and Wayzata from the South Hennepin and Coon Rapids, Osseo and Maple Grove from the North Hennepin. “It should be a pretty strong field,” said South Hennepin League director Gene Berg. “You’ve got the defending state champion, Eden Prairie, a team that finished second in the Legion World Series last summer, and the North Hennepin has three very competitive teams.” A number of outstanding pitchers will have a say in the tournament outcome. Among them are Adam Bray and Tyler Ruemmele of Eden Prairie, Paul Voelker of Wayzata, James Dean of Edina, Tim Shannon of Hopkins, Pete Wenker of Maple Grove, Sam Windle of Osseo and Logan Shore of Coon Rapids. Hendrickson retains coaching position with Wild Richfield native will assist new head coach Mike Yeo BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Darby Hendrickson excelled in hockey on the high school, college and professional levels. Richfield’s native son was always known as a “coach’s player” because of his work ethic, dynamic personality and hockey skills. Hendrickson was an All-State hockey forward at Richfield High and was named Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey in 1991. He went on to play two seasons at the University of Minnesota before embarking on a professional career in the NHL that included 518 games with four organizations – Toronto, Vancouver, Minnesota and Colorado. Hendrickson also spent three seasons playing pro hockey in Europe. After retiring, Hendrickson kept connected with the sport, serving as a hockey analyst for Fox Sports North while also working for the NHL Players Association. But he resigned from those two jobs to take a shot at a coaching career. Hendrickson joined the Minnesota Wild coaching staff as one of Todd Richards’ assistants last season. But Richards’ tenure ended when he was fired after the 2010-11 season as the Wild missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

lessons coaching under Richards. Unfortunately, one lesson was that coaches are fired for not winning and that meant the end for Richards as Wild head coach. Hendrickson’s employment with the Wild was also jeopardized after Richards was let go. However, new head coach Mike Yeo added assistant Darryl Sydor and retained Hendrickson, Rick Wilson and goalie coach Bob Mason a week ago. “I enjoyed working with Todd last season,” said Hendrickson. “We were in the playoff hunt until the wheels fell off late in the season. “The coaches tried to have positive effects on the players. But it was tough watching us fall short of qualifying for the playoffs. “That season’s experience was an eyeopener for me. I enjoyed working with the players during practice sessions and also learned a lot from listening to our other coaches.” Hendrickson’s game duty was being the team’s eye in the sky, relaying messages to the bench from the press box. Hendrickson is grateful for the opportunity to coach with Yeo. “I have known Mike through training camps in the past and he is impressive as a

Darby Hendrickson coach and person,” said Hendrickson. “He is a very honest person and has a good value system. “I am excited about our new coaching staff and the team’s future. We have a lot of young players that need to be developed and I will do my best to help them out.” Hendrickson will continue to communicate to the bench from the press box during games and work with players during practices.

Young coaching staff Hendrickson will be part of one of the youngest coaching staffs in the NHL. Mason and Wilson are longtime assistant coaches but Hendrickson (38), Sydor (39)

and Yeo (37) should bring enthusiasm to a team in a player-development mode. “I think my age was an asset last season because I could relate to the problems facing inexperienced players,” said Hendrickson. “I was able to interact well with the young guys and hope that continues this season.” Hendrickson and the new Wild coaching staff hope to harness that young talent and create a perennial playoff contender. There is no question Hendrickson has the coaching genes for hockey. His father Larry was one of the state’s most successful high school hockey coaches, serving at Richfield, Apple Valley and Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Darby and his wife Dana (Erickson) Hendrickson live in Minnetonka with sons Mason, Beckett and Rennick and daughter Addison. Dana was an All-State golfer during her prep career at Richfield High School.

Eden Prairie vies for District 10 Legion baseball title Tournament begins Thursday in Coon Rapids BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie has already secured a state American Legion baseball berth because it will host this year’s tournament later this month. But pride will be on the line for Eden Prairie in the District 10 tournament Thursday, July 21 through Sunday, July 24. Top three District 10 finishers besides Eden Prairie advance to state. But Eden Prairie is determined to enter state competition on a winning note. Eden Prairie wants to uphold its program’s postseason tradition. EP has been a perennial state, regional and national power during the past decade.

EP was a state and regional champion last season before placing second in the American Legion World Series. This summer Eden Prairie won the prestigious Rapid City Firecracker tournament title during the July 4 holiday weekend. The double-elimination District 10 tournament has a strong field. “District 10 has many of the state’s top teams such as Wayzata, Centennial, Maple Grove and Coon Rapids,” said Eden Prairie coach Scott Hackett. “We have been playing well and getting good pitching. “Our Legion team has been helped by the addition of two college freshmen players. Blake Schmit played for Des Moines Area Community College this past season and Tyler Peterson was a member of the North Iowa Area Community College team.”

Eden Prairie had a 22-5-1 record before competing in the Forest Lake tournament last weekend. Gopher Classic highlights Eden Prairie reached the semifinals of the Gopher Classic July 8-12 before losing 7-3 to Eastview. Eden Prairie split its opening tournament games, losing 7-6 to Hamline Purple (Cretin-Derham Hall) and beating Minot, N.D., 8-0. Eden Prairie followed with wins over Grand Rapids (8-4), Forest Lake (7-6) and La Crosse, Wis., (9-1). Eden Prairie defeated Fergus Falls 9-7 before losing to Eastview and finishing with a 5-2 Gopher Classic record. “The Gopher Classic was a grueling tournament and tough on your pitching staff,” said Hackett. “But we had a pretty good tournament.”

Kevin played on two Jefferson state title squads before starring at the University of Minnesota and embarking on a pro career in the NBA and Europe.
