Hindu temple finds a new home in Edina Sri Venkateswara Temple celebrates opening Aug. 4-7
BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN UnitedHealth Group and Eden Prairie moved a step closer to securing plans for a nearly 1.5 million-square-foot office campus. During its meeting Tuesday, July 19, the Eden Prairie City Council approved a comprehensive guide plan amendment changing the company’s initial plans for a mixed-use development at Highway 62 and Shady Oak Road, which would have included both residential and commercial structures, to a plan for the ambitious construction of the campus. “The UnitedHealth Group guide plan
BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The south metro faith community has a new member. The inaugural celebration for the Sri Venkateswara Hindu Temple begins Thursday, Aug. 4, and culminates Sunday, Aug. 7, with its sanctification. Located in the former Spa Bella Casa building, 7615 Metro Blvd., in Edina, the approximately 18,000square-foot space will allow the temple to expand its cultural education and outreach. “This is a place to come together, practice music and dance, as well as learn about Hinduism itself,” Vamshi Jonnalagadda, vice president of the temple board, said. The Sri Venkateswara Temple began with about 100 devotees close to two years ago in a small leased space just north of Interstate 394 in Golden Valley. “By summer 2010, the congregation really grew,” and is now estimated at close to 1,000, Jonnalagadda said. Each year, neighborhoods across the country dedicate one summer evening to celebrate and strengthen the commitment to a safe community. This year, the Eden Prairie Night to Unite event will take place Tuesday, Aug. 2. Representatives from the Eden Prairie Police and Fire Departments, as well as several city officials, will visit many of the local celebrations. The city will once again collect donations for PROP, People Reaching Out to Other People, during the Eden Prairie Night to Unite festivities.

BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN An Eden Prairie Ford dealership hopes to drive business about a half mile down the road as the company looks to relocate. The Eden Prairie City Council adopted a resolution approving the planned concept of Metropolitan Ford’s move from 12790 Plaza Drive to 12475 Plaza Drive, the site of the former Suburban Chevrolet dealership, during the council’s meeting Tuesday, July 19. The proposition calls for the 16.2 acre piece of land to be redesigned into a two-plat lot that will include Metropolitan Ford’s new 39,750 squarefoot building and the Chevrolet dealership. The Ford dealership’s new building would be about the same size as its current location, according to Tom Grossman, president of the Metropolitan Corporation and owner of Metropolitan Ford. As part of the proposed plan, a 1,000-square-foot addition would be added to the 62,000-square-foot Suburban Chevrolet dealership,
according to Grossman. The 1,000 square-foot space may be used to add a carwash to the Chevrolet dealership. The front exterior of the building would also be modified as part of the project. Grossman owns the property Suburban Chevrolet sits on. However, he rents the space Metropolitan Ford occupies today. Metropolitan Fords current lease is set to expire soon, according to Grossman. Councilmember Kathy Nelson questioned Grossman about the future of dealership’s current home. “I’m afraid I have no idea what they are going to do with it in any way,” Grossman said. “All I can say is it will cease to be our car dealership.” The city’s Planning Commission approved plans for the dealership’s relocation and the proposed construction project prior to the city council’s accepted the concept July 19. Grossman hopes to begin construction on a new state-of-the-art facility as soon as August. He aims to have the project completed by March 2012.

City council asks church-to-homes developer to reconsider plans BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN King of Glory Lutheran Church could be replaced by a 16 lot residential development, but not before a few tweaks to the proposed project. During its meeting Tuesday, July 19, the Eden Prairie City Council listened to a presentation by JMS Custom Homes, requesting a guide plan change that would allow the company to move forward in developing plans to build a lowdensity residential neighborhood on what is now the location of King of Glory Lutheran Church, 17850 Duck Lake Trail. However, the city council voted to postpone a decision until their next meeting, Tuesday, Aug. 16. The proposed residential development would consist of 16 single-family lots, taking up 6.41 acres of the 11.62-acre property. The remaining 5.21 acres would be set aside for parks and open space use, according to the proposal. The project, situated near Duck Lake
Trial in Eden Prairie, will place a focus on fitting in with the surrounding natural landscape, including Edenbrook Conservation Area, according to Jeff Schoenwetter, a representative of JMS Custom Homes. “I had a primary design goal for this neighborhood and that was to really relate well to the open space and provide trail connectivity,” Schoenwetter said. “Most cul-de-sacs that we’ve all driven down, at the end of the cul-de-sac, you would find a house. “In our particular plat at there’s no home at the head end of the cul-de-sac. It’s a neighborhood plat that creates an aperture, or a view window, so that Edenbrook is actually viewed from many of the vistas and most of the homes within the neighborhood.” The project plans feature nontraditional design aspects, including, among other details, photo cell lighting on each home rather than streetlights to illuminate the streetscape, according to Schoenwetter. Some of the proposal’s nontraditional design schemes relating to cul-de-sac length, lot width and lot size have result-

ed in what are known as Planned Unit Development waivers. According to City Manager Rick Getschow, a waiver is similar to a variance from city code. In this scenario, a waiver is a way of asking the city to relax enforcement of code to allow less traditional design elements to be incorporated into the project. The JMS Custom Homes project has a total of 40 PUD waivers, a number too high for both the city council members and a number of residents living near the area, including Shawn and Sarah Cheesman of Boyd Avenue. Sarah Cheesman presented a petition signed by 61 residents of neighborhoods near the site of potential development. While 54 of the people who signed the petition are in favor of rezoning the suggested area from church to residential, all 61 opposed the proposal featuring 40 PUD waivers, according to Sarah Cheesman. Shawn Cheesman also argued against the project’s guide plan with the help of a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation. During his presentation, Shawn Cheesman offered an alternative 15-lot
plan he said would eliminate many of the proposals 40 PUD waivers. Though each council member commented on parts of the proposal they were supported, Mayor Nancy TyraLukens and other members of the council voiced their concern with the amount of waivers and the problems they could pose in the future. “I also think it is a beautiful plan. I love the way the street is going to look. I like the innovation.” said Tyra-Lukens. “However, I still have the same issues that the others do with the number of variances and the number of lots affected by the variances, and the situation that it puts the council in when people come in and they want to have an ability to go within a setback to build a garage or a deck and they point to this development. “How do we deny people on some of those requests in the future when we have basically given waivers to every single lot in this development?” Tyra-Lukens also urged the project developers to work more closely with neighborhood residents while making changes to their plan.

Lazy, hazy dog days of summer? Feels like it Post writing this, the temperatures will probably have come down to what most people would consider a reasonable summer temperature. Yet, during last week’s heat wave it was fun to watch people squirm. Imagine living in Texas, or anywhere in the South for that matter, where a week of temperatures that flirt with the century mark should be welcome. Granted, there are health issues that go along with heat as high as it was, but taking that out of consideration for argumentative purposes – it’s summer. Enjoy the sultry weather while it lasts. Minnesota really is the land of extremes; the temperature swing between the all-time high and low in the state is 174 degrees! Tuesday, July 19, was one for the books.
CHRIS DILLMAN Excelsior/Shorewood Community Editor
It marked the third consecutive day with 80 degree or higher dew points in the Twin Cities; dew point basically measures the moisture in the air. Add a 119-degree heat index (also referred to as “feels like”) at MSP airport, tying the all-time high – though I saw 121 on the Weather Channel app – 88degree dew point in Moorhead, as well as 134degree heat index, the highest ever in the state, and it can be summed up that it was hot! We are, in fact, amid the
“Dog Days of Summer,” which are typically July through early September, and date back to ancient times. The period is named that because of Sirius, the “dog star.” So bring on the heat. Those not so much a fan of the heat usually say something like, “Well, you can always add clothing when you’re cold.” What I say to that is, unless you want to look and feel like Ralphie’s kid brother Randy in “A Christmas Story,” bundling up doesn’t sound too appealing. What does sound appealing is shorts, sandals and a tank top. There’s also the relief factor. When you walk from the heat into a place that’s air-conditioned, there’s instant relief. This, opposed to walking into a building that heated from
minus 20 degrees, where thawing takes much longer. Again, we could be Texas and have triple-digit heat for doubledigit days. Granted, I probably wouldn’t be singing the same tune if I didn’t happen to have an air conditioner. Yet, like extreme cold, extreme heat for too long of exposures can be deadly. Heatrelated deaths top every other death caused by weather combined, so make sure it’s enjoyed in moderation. We all know that weather around here always changes, and since heat like that doesn’t usually last too long up here, I welcome it with open arms. Because before you know it, it’s back to shoveling, snow emergencies and temperatures with a minus in front of the number.
mize the effectiveness of our tax dollars. That $10 billion in HHS savings might be a conservative figure because of the low-ball calculations we were forced to use in estimating the savings through reform. I am optimistic upcoming budget forecasts will paint an even brighter picture as these reforms we enacted take root. The most important thing for us to accomplish this year was to get a grip on state spending and we did that. Our general fund budget will be $34 billion, a modest increase from the previous biennium but a sharp reduction from the unaffordable $39 billion we were set to spend.
We all can find areas of the budget where we disagree, but that is the nature of compromise. I am not thrilled with the K-12 funding shift we enacted, but at least we lessened the total from what the governor was proposing. We also added $50 per pupil to the education funding formula. We still need much more government redesign/reform and I look forward to making even more strides in 2012. Kirk Stensrud Eden Prairie
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR State budget not perfect, but put a grip on spending To the editor: The state budget we put in place during the recent special session is not a perfect one, but we did eliminate our $5 billion shortfall, end the state shutdown and pass reforms that will greatly improve our fiscal future. I was pleased with the reforms we enacted. Take health and human services, for example. We were headed for a 22-percent spending increase in this portion of the budget, but
the improvements we made allow us to whittle that down to a far more responsible and sustainable 4.8 percent. The improvements we made will save Minnesota taxpayers more than $10 billion over the next decade. In addition to reducing spending growth, we also moved further in the direction of a patient-centered system so we can uphold our responsibility to provide assistance to those who need it most. The new budget also does not cut funding for nursing homes, boosts rural pharmacies and minimizes reductions to the disabled. We also have measures in place to reduce welfare fraud to maxi-

Scouting for Uniforms drive tracking behind previous years BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Boy Scouts’ July Scouting for Uniforms campaign is lagging behind expected collection numbers. There are only a few days of the campaign left. As of July 20, the campaign had only collected about 75 uniforms. That’s onetenth of the goal of 750 uniforms. This is the fourth year the Boy Scouts’ Northern Star Council has partnered with Pilgrim Cleaners to collect used Boy Scout and Cub Scout uniforms for scouts in need. The Northern Star Council serves the Twin Cities and counties in central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Bonnie Engler, the president of Pilgrim Cleaners, started the uniform drive after hearing about a similar program in another part of the country. Kent York is a spokesperson for the Northern Star Council. “We’re tracking behind previous years,” he said. Each year the uniform drive has collected more uniforms than the previous year. The first year it collected 350 uniforms.
The second year it collected 560, and last year it collected 564. York doesn’t know why the pace of uniform donations has been slower this year. He speculates it may have something to do with the recent heat. But he’s hopeful that the pace will pick up now. “It’s human nature to wait until the last minute,” he said. Through the end of July, uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Uniforms can also be dropped off at the Golden Valley Scout Service Center, 5300 Glenwood Ave. or the St. Paul Scout Service Center, 393 Marshall Ave between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Monetary contributions should be sent to Northern Star Council BSA, Attn: Kent York, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422. Info: ScoutingGoodForLife.org or 763231-7201 (Northern Star Council).

Do you have a question about what soil is better to grow a vegetable garden in verses a flowerbed, or are you curious about what type of wild mushrooms are growing in your yard? The Master Gardners are ready with the answers. “We are people who love to garden and love to go out and help others with their gardens,” Master Gardner and Richfield resident Gordon Hanson said. The Master Gardeners program is a national program with its Minnesota roots growing from the University of Minnesota. Coordinated by the University of Minnesota, each county in the state is equipped with an extension program. With over 2200 Master Gardeners in Minnesota, 300 of which count themselves as members of the Hennepin County chapter. The Hennepin County chapter meets once a month with a special speaker and presentation about any of the many gardening topics available. Also at the meet-
ing, the Master Gardeners are given opportunities to sign up for many various volunteering adventures. “We are educators. We offer researchbased, university-supportive information,” Hanson said on why the Master Gardeners program is so special. According to Hanson, any of the information given by a Master Gardener has been proven with research to be effective and accurate. Armed with information, advice and talents, the Master Gardeners get out in the communities to benefit schools, community gardens, youth programs, environmental education programs, farmers markets and any other organization requesting their help. “There are thousands of dollars worth of volunteering hours invested in the communities of Minnesota,” Hanson said. Some of the specific volunteering tasks that Master Gardeners participate with include: • Teaching classes and workshops, • Answering phone inquiries concernGARDENERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Gardeners FROM PREVIOUS PAGE ing home horticulture, • Assisting with county Horticulture Days, • Teaching and demonstrating horticulture techniques in community and school gardens, • Teaching youth and judging horticulture projects, • Media interviews and articles on horticulture topics, • Speaking to schools and youth groups on gardening topics, • Holding plant clinics at garden centers and farmers markets, • Representing the program at county and state fair exhibits, • Horticulture therapy for both children and adults, • And teaching horticulture in hospitals, nursing homes and retirement centers. Every Saturday, from 7 a.m. to noon, at the Richfield Farmers Market in Veterans Memorial Park, the Hennepin County Master Gardeners set up a table with flyers and handouts with valuable gardening information and give the Richfield community a chance to ask any and all questions their gardens, lawns and landscaping. “I love going to the Richfield Farmers Market because I see people I know and am able to help people with their gardening needs,” Hanson said. Hanson has been asked all types of questions from how does one control Creeping Charlie — also known as ground ivy — in their yard to what time of year is best to transplant a Bleeding Heart, a perennial flowering plant. Although very knowledgeable, a Master Gardener may not know everything. When presented with a question of which the answer may elude them, Master Gardeners are encouraged to be honest and will put the asker in the right direction for finding the answer, according to
Hanson. Most Master Gardeners are not people with horticulture degrees and many do not make their living in the horticulture field, but they have passion and a love for gardening, said Hanson. Becoming a Master Gardener involves three steps. First, the process involves becoming accepted by the local county program. After requesting an application packet an application, test and interview, with a background check must be completed. “In Hennepin County, the test questions are all based on gardening articles given in the application packet,” Hanson said. “And in the interview you are asked what is your interest in gardening.” Next, the applicant must complete a Master Gardener Core Course through the University of Minnesota. The course is 48 class hours of horticulture training taught by extension educators and university faculty. “The course is a whirlwind of gardening topics. The instruction is really great because it is all the university professors and experts teaching you,” Hanson said. After the course, the candidate must complete an internship during their first year. The internship includes 50 hours of volunteer time to be completed within the first year of participation. “When your internship is completed, you are given active Master Gardener status,” Hanson said. But being a Master Gardener doesn’t end here. Maintaining the active status requires each member to volunteer no less than 25 hours and partake in at least 12 hours of continuing education each year. “It is a fun program to be a part of. It is very rewarding too,” Hanson said. “This is something you want to do out of love for the subject matter.” For more information, visit hennepinmastergardeners.org. To ask a Hennepin County Master Gardener a question, call the hotline at 612-596-2118, or visit extension.umn.edu/gardeninfo.

For some twins, there’s a life for 1 without the other BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER If just one cookie remained in the family cookie jar, Sandy Meyer and her twin Sally broke it in half and shared it. That’s how Sandy Meyer of Chanhassen explains her close relationship with her twin sister Sally. Growing up in Richfield, the fraternal twins shared a bedroom, a birthday and a unique bond. They were even known as the Walls twins; Walls was the family name. “It was like having a built-in best friend,” said Meyer, 59. “Even when we were mad at each other, which we were on several occasions, we knew we had the other to depend on.” Meyer’s life changed dramatically when Sally died at age 37 in 1989 from complications of leukemia. Meyer felt abandoned and alone because she had lost her best friend. Suddenly, she was a “twinless twin.” “I can see that losing a sibling of any kind is very painful,” she said. “But I think the closer bond that twins have from the moment of conception and always doing things together, and just being such an enmeshed part of each
‘I think the closer bond that twins have from the moment of conception and always doing things together, and just being such an enmeshed part of each other’s lives, is what makes it different’ other’s lives, is what makes it different.” Meyer began to adjust to her loss after she found other identical or fraternal twins who had lost their twin siblings. She joined the Twinless Twins Support Group International and helped to organize the group’s annual convention July 2123 in Bloomington. The event attracted about 65 people from the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. While Sandy and Sally were close, they had separate identities. Except for fifth grade, they attended school in separate classrooms. Their mother dressed them alike until ninth grade, when Sally announced that it was time to dress differently because they didn’t look alike. “[Sally] had all the brains, all the beauty, all the boyfriends,” Meyer said. “We respected each other and loved each other
and encouraged each other.” After graduating from the University of Minnesota, the twins remained close and always celebrated their Oct. 5 birthdays together with cake and family dinners. Both twins married. Sally had no children; Meyer and her husband Steve had one daughter, Sharla. In 1989, Sally was diagnosed with leukemia. Sandy donated bone marrow for a transplant, but Sally developed infections from treatments and died after an eight-month battle with the disease. Besides her grief, Meyer had to confront a new identity. “There’s the whole issue of trying to figure out who I was, because ‘we’ becomes ‘me’ and that’s a really complicated thing to figure out,” she said. “I had no idea who I was supposed to be in this world.”
Many twins are traumatized by the loss, said Nancy Segal, a psychology professor at California State University, Fullerton, who has researched twins for about 30 years. “It’s very devastating,” said Segal, a twin herself. “Birthdays become days of mourning. You become a constant reminder to everybody else that the twin is not there. People still call you the wrong name, there are all these reminders.” Surviving twins sometimes adopt habits or behaviors of the lost twin, perhaps as a way to keep their memory alive, she said. Several trends predict an increase in the twinless twin phenomenon. Currently, the twin birth rate for babies born in Western countries is 1 in 30, up from 1 in 60 in the 1970s, Segal said. Rates will probably rise as women delay childbearing and turn to reproductive technologies like in-vitro fertilization, she said. Segal is a former twin researcher at the University of Minnesota, where she started a twinless twins support group. Meyer joined the group a few years after her sister’s death, and she remembers it TWINS: TO PAGE 21

UnitedHealth FROM PAGE 1 change is the first step in a pretty large project in our community,” City Manager Rick Getschow said. If built, the office complex would house nearly 6,700 jobs, according to Getschow. The office campus would feature four buildings, each of which would be between eight and 15 stories high, and three parking ramps with around 6,500 parking stalls. According to a traffic study document, the site could be developed enough to have space for 2,500 people by 2013, another 2,500 people by 2015 and the site could be fully developed by 2017. Under the revised guide plan, 57 acres of the 72-acre property would be used for office structure development. An additional 15 acres would be set aside for public and semi-public use. The proposed project also includes plans to incorporate a Light Rail Transit station. “To accommodate the Southwest transit LRT is a key ingredient of our plan and our development,” said UnitedHealth Group’s Senior Director of Development Dennis Spaller. The office campus would also offer a wide range of amenities to employees, according to Spaller “Our buildings will be somewhat self-contained in that they will have amenities within them — a fairly good sized cafeteria — serveries. We will have a fitness center, conferencing cen-
ters and other touchdown areas where large groups of people and small groups can gather and talk to one another,” Spaller said. “That’s a very new facet of our dynamic change in our adaptive workplace standards for our buildings.” Spaller expressed his organization’s willingness to partner with Eden Prairie to make the proposed project a reality. “This site is envisioned as a major employment center — a destination — and as in every journey, it starts with a first step, and we want to begin that journey with you tonight,” Spaller said Though planning for the proposed complex is still in its infancy and there is a long way to go before the UnitedHealth Group campus becomes a reality, the city council seemed delighted by the potential of what could be large benefit to the city’s economy. “I am sure you’re aware that with 1.5 million square-feet of office space coming to the city and 6,700 employees that we are about tinkled pink up here, excited to have you all come in,” Councilmember Ron Case said, addressing Spaller. “We’ve been talking about this for years, and it is not very often that I think any city council gets to have this type of a business and this large come in on our watch. On behalf of myself, I am very excited about this.” UnitedHealth Group would like to begin construction sooner rather than later. The company hopes to be in the ground yet this year and they’d like to have construction going strong by the spring, Spaller said.

Lawn mower racers go for bragging rights, not money BY SUE WEBBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS An endearing 1999 movie called “The Straight Story” told the true story of a 73year-old Iowa man who traveled 240 miles on a riding lawn mower to visit his dying brother in Wisconsin. Even in the extreme heat of this summer, there are Minnesotans, too, who are using lawn mowers for other purposes than cutting grass.

Enter the 35-member Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association, a six-year-old organization that prides itself on racing not for money, but for “trophies, glory, points and bragging rights.” “It’s a cheap sport; it’s just so much fun,” said Brian Darmer of Crystal, president of the Minnesota chapter. He and his wife, Linda, were at Raceway Park in Shakopee one night about four years ago when they first saw

a lawn mower racing exhibition. “I looked at my wife and I said, ‘That’s my calling,’” Darmer recalled. “I’ve been going at it ever since.” Darmer, a 28-year resident of Crystal, has worked for the city’s Street Department for 15 years. There is some precedent to his affinity for racing. A native of Fairmont, Minn., Darmer was at one time that city’s dirt car track champion for four consecutive years, and raced cars in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. In the last several years, he and his family have bought one mower for racing and rebuilt a second, and the Mowlet Racing team was born – so named because of Darmer’s mullet hairstyle. According to the rules of the national organization, the vehicles must have been used at some time for lawn mowing purposes, and must have the blades removed. “We store them in the garage,” Darmer said. “It’s my shop now.” He enlisted the help of daughter Emily, 22. “I prefer car racing,” said Emily, who was racing cars at the age of 19, and recalls with fondness the pink and black vehicle she drove until the motor burned out. It wasn’t long before their 13-year across-the-street neighbors, Jackie Karst and her 14-year-old daughter, Sadie, got involved in the lawnmower racing hobby. “I thought it would be cool,” Sadie said. “It’s really fun. I know how to change oil pretty good now.” Sadie, a freshman at Brooklyn Center High School, now is tied for first place in Minnesota’s junior division. Jackie is the group’s co-secretary. “I raced once,” Jackie said. “Now I help with registration at the races.” Linda Darmer has become the group’s official photographer. “She has full access to the track,” Darmer said. “Everyone knows her.” Brian has enlisted two local sponsors: Market Tire in Crystal and Crystal Wine and Spirits. The Darmer family and a statewide group of individuals – mostly men – ranging in age from 15 to 80 show up to race at venues all over the state, wherever they are asked to appear. Their machines race at between 26 and 40 mph. Riders must wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, gloves, helmets, boots, a neck support and even chest protectors. The Minnesota group, governed by a board of directors, carries a $1 million insurance policy. This year the Minnesota group has
raced in Shakopee and a number of venues in Wisconsin. They also raced on ice at last year’s St. Paul Winter Carnival. Their next outings include the Blue Earth County Fair July 29, the Dakota County Fair Aug. 13, Cottonwood County Fair Aug. 19, Renville County Fair Aug. 20, and an exhibition at Raceway Park in Shakopee Sept. 16. “They pay us to show up,” Darmer said. “We’re the main attraction for the grandstand. It’s a two- to three-hour show. It’s rain or shine. As long as the mowers can get around the track, we race.” Events are plentiful enough that racers could be in competition every weekend if they wanted to, Darmer said. If someone’s vehicle breaks down mid-race, he said, everybody pitches in to get the disabled mower up and running again. They all carry spare parts with them, Darmer said. “We’re having fun, and we’re growing real fast,” he said. “We’re trying to get more kids and ladies involved.” In the winter, the Minnesota group conducts “build clinics” in a variety of locations where people interested in lawnmower racing can come and get help in building their own machines. “We bring parts and motors, and they buy them,” Darmer said. The camaraderie is second to none, he said. “It’s a family thing,” Darmer said. “We all travel together.” When the teams race, they camp out and share food and expenses, he said. If the races are in the Twin Cities area, the group camps out on Darmer’s lawn in Crystal. “We look like a gypsy village,” Darmer said. “It’s just a blast.” The local lawn mower racers have achieved some notoriety along the way. On July 29, they’re being filmed to appear on “Minnesota Bound.” They were on Twin Cities Live last year, and have been filmed on Cable Channel 12 several times. They may resemble NASCAR drivers, Darmer said, but, he quipped, “A lot of people call us the poor man’s grass-car.” The USLMRA, founded in 1992, has 45 local chapters and a simple motto: “The mow the merrier.” People interested in becoming involved in lawn mower racing may call Darmer at 612-990-8190, or go to mownorth.com or letsmow.com

EP man dies in Minnetonka after vehicle goes into pond BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS An Eden Prairie man died in Minnetonka Tuesday, July 19, after he drove his vehicle off the road. However, his death did not occur immediately and the Hennepin County Medical Center is still investigating the cause of it. It is believed a medical condition may have been the cause. Michael Fernando, 52, was driving eastbound on Interstate 394 shortly before 9 a.m. that day when his vehicle went off the road and into a holding
pond at Hopkins Crossroad. Fernando got out of the vehicle and called emergency personnel, but declined an ambulance and only requested a tow truck, according to Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol. A short time later, the State Patrol determined he had become unresponsive. Minnetonka officers responded and assisted with providing CPR to Fernando. However, they were not able to revive him and paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene.

Spotlight on Education “Imagine Your Future”
College-prep checklist for Minnesota Colleges 9th and 10th grades • Take classes that prepare you for education after high school, especially in math, English, science and social studies. Plan carefully with your high school counselor. • Visit your school career center or counseling office to explore information about careers and various colleges and universities. By 11th grade • Call the admissions office and ask for a brochure. • Explore college and university Web sites. • Request more information from the colleges and universities that interest
you. • Schedule campus visits this year and in the fall of your senior year. • Take the ACT or SAT test if you might attend a four-year university. One of these standardized tests is required for admission to a four year state university. (No ACT or SAT tests are required for admission to a two-year state college, but after you are admitted, you will need to take a test for placement in the appropriate classes based on your reading, writing and mathematics skills.) • Consider taking some college courses beginning in 11th grade if you are eligible.
During 12th grade • Make campus visits to colleges that interest you most. • Apply to college. For a four-year university, apply in the fall. For a two-year college, applications are accepted until the college semester begins, but applying early gives you a better chance of getting into the programs and courses you want. You can get an application: - From your high school counseling office. - website www.mnscu.edu - By mail by calling toll-free at 1-888667-2848.
• Apply for financial aid after Jan. 1 of your senior year even if you're not sure which college to attend. Get the free federal financial aid application from your high school counselor, college admissions offices or on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. • Look for scholarships. College admissions offices and high school counselors can help you. Info: http://www.mnscu.edu.

Temple FROM PAGE 1 meets Hindu temple standards and city code. Reddy, who was in India purchasing items for the new temple and celebration, was not available for an interview. Jonnalagadda said the location is ideal for its access to Highway 100 and Interstate 494, as well as its proximity to Nine Mile Creek, which runs behind the temple. Water is an important element to have near temples, he said. The Edina temple will be the second largest in the state behind the 43,000square-foot Hindu Temple of Minnesota in Maple Grove, he said. The three-level building includes an area for worship on the top floor that can accommodate close to 500, classrooms, a banquet hall and kitchen on the main floor, and storage and more meeting space in the basement. Sree Kunduru, an executive board member who leads the temple’s food committee, said the number of classrooms would go from two to up to 10, allowing for more weekend classes in language, classical Indian music and dance. Education is a big focus for the temple. “We want to teach the next generation what our culture is,” said Kunduru, who, with husband Jonnalagadda, has two children. Kunduru said many other temple members also have young children. Language classes include Hindi, India’s national language, as well as Telugu, which the family speaks at their Eden Prairie home, and Tamil. Jonnalagadda, who leads the religious committee, also gives lectures on Hindu scripture. “Hinduism dictates a way of living,” he said describing the faith. To be considered a devotee, there is no specific rite, just adherence to the practice. One of the core beliefs is karma, he said.
Twins FROM PAGE 12 as a turning point, allowing her to share feelings and memories with others who truly understood her grief. Memories have become a source of strength for Meyer. She treasures mementoes like Sally’s opal ring and a stuffed “comfort bear” made from scraps of purple, blue and green plaid fabric from one of Sally’s skirts. Encouraged to go back to school by Sally before her death, Meyer completed a bachelor’s degree at Metropolitan
“We strive to be as gentle as possible, as good as possible,” Jonnalagadda said. “We also strongly believe that service to mankind is service to God.” In addition to education, Sri Venkateswara Temple has a focus on social justice and volunteers monthly at the People Serving People shelter in Minneapolis, as well as participates in holiday drives. Hindu temples can worship one of Hinduism’s god or many. With its move to a larger building, the Sri Venkateswara Temple is adding eight deities to accompany the main god it worships, Venkateswara – a manifestation of Vishnu, the preserver in the Hindu trinity rounded out with Shiva, the destroyer, and Brahma, the creator. Part of the opening celebration will include “prana pratishta,” the ritual for bringing deities’ souls into statues. On a recent Saturday, the eight statues representing Venkateswara’s companion goddess Lakshmi, Sanskrit for wealth, in her eight forms – prosperity, health, agriculture, success, knowledge, strength, progeny and power – were packed in rice at the Golden Valley temple. They’ll also be immersed in water as a step of the ceremony, said Jonnalagadda. “When the deity is made, whether stone or metal, a lot of stress goes on it. We do this to bring that out as much as possible,” he said. There will also be other ceremonies, musical performances and a visit by Edina Mayor Jim Hovland. Jonnalagadda said in addition to Sri Venkateswara Temple’s priests Vamsi Kanduri and Murali Vedala, eight more will travel to Edina to help lead the celebration. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend. Jonnalagadda said the temple is open everyday of the week and welcomes visitors.

As time passes, Meyer has discovered that happy memories outnumber the sad ones. “I think the bigger thing than time is allowing yourself to open your heart to new things – new people, new loves, new adventures,“ she said. “Because if you don’t open your heart to new things to fill the emptiness, I don’t think all the time in the world is going to make a difference.” Info: twinlesstwins.org.

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to August 15th receive $100 off when you mention this article.

EP claims District 10 Legion baseball title Local team will host state tournament this weekend BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie already had a place locked up in the state American Legion baseball tourney heading into the District 10 playoffs last weekend in Coon Rapids. EP received an automatic invitation because it will host the 16-team, doubleelimination state tournament Thursday, July 29, through Monday, Aug. 1. But Eden Prairie was determined to enter state competition with momentum. And it did just that by claiming the District 10 title with four consecutive
victories. Eden Prairie will try to successfully defend its state championship this weekend. EP has a 28-7-1 overall record. Eden Prairie won the Central Plains Regional a year ago before placing second in the American Legion World Series. “It will be fun to play at state on a familiar field,” said Eden Prairie coach Scott Hackett. “And it will be nice having the community behind us. “We have a tough act to follow after last year’s team did so well. But we have a pretty deep squad and our veteran pitchers have already experienced playing in big games and don’t get rattled.” Eden Prairie displayed strong pitching and hitting during the District 10 tournament. Firemen’s tourney crowns six bracket champions Weather fails to dampen enthusiasm of 160 slowpitch softball squads BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Heavy rain plus high heat and humidity kept attendance down at the 53rd annual Firemen’s/Virg Ellrich Memorial Slowpitch Softball Tournament July 14-17 in Bloomington. The 2011 tournament was below its usual total of 20,000 spectators, players and volunteers. But the sticky conditions didn’t reduce the enthusiasm of the 160 Class A through D teams competing in the double-elimination tourney at Valley View and Dred Scott fields. Tournament champions were crowned in six divisions. Local teams fared well in the tourney that attracted teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Maryland, Nevada and Minnesota. Anytime Fitness of Minneapolis claimed the championship in the men’s Tier I division. Sonny’s from Casper, Wyo., was second and Bloomington’s
BBS/Budweiser finished third. A Brooklyn Park team, Dehn Bros., won the men’s Tier II title and the Bryan Rock squad of Prior Lake placed second. Glory Days of Bloomington won the men’s Tier III championship and Eden Prairie’s Jack Daniels squad was runnerup. Glory Days player Tom Hilden, a Jefferson High graduate, was named Tier III Most Valuable Player. Another Brooklyn Park team, Free Agents, won the women’s Tier II championship, with Agassiz Underground from North Dakota placing second. Bloomington’s Lady Macs won the women’s Tier III title. Two metro-area squads placed high in the Co-Rec division. T.C. Turmoil placed first and Tool Academy was second. In Thursday’s all-star games, the Bloomington Police blanked Bloomington Firefighters 5-0. In the second game, the Under-30 all-stars defeated the Over-30 team. Firemen’s tourney participants and 350 volunteers battled the elements for four days. “Our crowds were down because of the FIREMEN’S: TO NEXT PAGE

Baseball FROM PAGE 26 Eden Prairie opened with a 9-1 triumph over Maple Grove July 21. Winning pitcher Adam Bray worked eight of the nine innings. Lance Thonvold came through with three hits and two RBI. “It was a good tournament start for our team,” said Hackett. “We had eight of our nine starters hit safely.” Eden Prairie defeated Cambridge 175 July 22 in a game shortened to seven innings because of the 10-run rule. Tyler Ruemmele was the winning pitcher. Thonvold contributed three hits, including two home runs, and drove in five runs. Tony Skjefte connected for three hits, including two home runs, and finished with four RBI. Ryan Maenke also provided EP with power, hitting a three-run homer. Eden Prairie shut out Robbinsdale Cooper 5-0 July 23. The game was shortened from nine to seven innings because rain had backed up the tournament schedule.
Winning pitcher Cameron Mingo struck out eight and walked only one. “Cameron mixed his pitches well and threw strikes,” said Hackett. “He had a strong effort.” Blake Schmit helped the offense with three hits. Ruemmele added two hits and two RBI. Eden Prairie clinched the championship in the double-elimination tourney by rallying for a 12-9 win over Hopkins July 24. Eden Prairie trailed 9-6 before scoring six runs in the eighth inning. Skjefte went 3-for-3 and Tyler Peterson hit a two-run homer. Peterson was named Eden Prairie’s and the South Hennepin League’s Most Valuable Player. He played last spring at North Iowa Area Community College. “Tyler has had a great summer season,” said Hackett. “He plans to attend North Iowa for one more year.” Eden Prairie and Wayzata both had 8-1 records in the final South Hennepin League standings. However, Wayzata won the title on a tiebreaker and gained the top seed for the District 10 playoffs. Eden Prairie placed fourth in the Forest Lake tournament July 15-17. Lakeville South defeated EP 6-5 in the semifinals. Hopkins beat EP 10-7 in the third-place game.

“We had many compliments from the players regarding how good the fields were considering the heavy rain we had Thursday and Friday. Former home health nurse enjoys creating healthier homes New Windows for America expanding its products, efficiency and facility Rhonda and Jim Steffes have owned and operated New Windows for America in New Brighton since 2000. Their business has grown to 30 employees and moved in March 2011 to a bigger location in New Brighton off of 35W. The company sells and installs residential windows, doors, siding, attic insulation, metal and solar roofing. “We started as a windows only company, but over the years have expanded to include more energy efficient products,” said Rhonda, who started the company after working for 10 years as a home health care RN. “I went from taking care of people to taking care of homes. We want to be your Energy Savings Solution Company.” Jim was a CPA working as the chief financial officer for a manufacturing plant before he joined Rhonda in the company. “We were founded after all the hassles and high prices we obtained while searching for windows in our home,” says Rhonda. “We felt we could do it better, cheaper and with less hassles for the homeowner. We become your ‘window guy’ for any problems, questions or
concerns. One call to us will take care of it.” With the federal government pushing homeowners to be more energy efficient, New Windows for America has joined forces with Xcel Energy and is now a trade partner. “Our relationship with Xcel Energy helps us help our customers save money by making their homes more energy efficient with attic insulation,” adds Rhonda. “We also made homes energy efficient with Energy Star certified windows, which can slash up to 40% off your home’s heating and air conditioning loss.” Solar roofing is another new product the company is installing so homeowners can eliminate a large portion of their home electrical costs, which in turn helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil. For the last nine years the company has received the Super Service Award from Angies List and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. They also have a 12 month Same-as-Cash financing program. Rhonda claims that a major key to their success is having the highest quality installa-
tion, adding how “most of our customer feedback is reporting how conscientious and meticulous our installers are.” New Windows for America offers a double lifetime warranty including glass breakage and lifetime labor. All vinyl replacement windows are guaranteed for as long as you own the home. The warranty in non-prorated and there will be no charge for glass seal failure or glass breakage to the present property owner or the subsequent homeowner. “If you provide lifetime labor warranty, it needs to be right the first time,” adds Rhonda. In addition to the lifetime warranty the company offers an energy guarantee. Their standard window is a triple pane which is 30% more energy efficient than double pane windows most other companies install. Besides being more energy efficient, Rhonda says other benefits of having new windows and siding include increased property value and security, noise reduction, enhanced appearance of your home and they are maintenance free and easy to clean.
Want To Lower Your Energy Bills? Slash up to 40% off the heat & air conditioning loss of your home.
Plus, the Remodeling Magazine's Cost Versus Value report concludes, when replacing 10+ windows with vinyl replacement windows, the home's immediate return of investment is 73.6 percent. New Windows for America offers all vinyl or a wood interior window that has the maintenance free vinyl exterior. This is a nice option for those who want to keep a real wood window in their home. The wood windows are available in both oak & poplar. “We have over 2,770 references, and have installed over 50,000 windows in the Twin Cities,” adds Rhonda. “Approximately 35-40 percent of our business is generated through referrals or repeat business.” Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The store is at 2123 Old Hwy 8 NW New Brighton. Information: 651-203-0149 or www.NWFAMN.com.
