Looks to gauge Krull’s interest in early, ‘mutual’ seperation BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS Within the two weeks following Eden Prairie Schools Supt. Melissa Krull’s announcement that she would step down next summer, the Eden Prairie School Board took steps to prepare for a future transition with a new superintendent. That included a step to determine Krull’s interest in ending her contract early. In a letter to parents and staff, Krull said she would not seek another contract with the school board once her current, threeyear contract expires June 30, 2012. During an impromptu special meeting Tuesday, Aug. 9, the board decided to have its attorney measure Krull’s interest in

Eden Prairie community group backs off school district lawsuit threat BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS An Eden Prairie group started by community members has changed its message since schools’ superintendent Melissa Krull announced Wednesday, July 27, that she would not seek another contract after the 2011-2012 school year. In a statement released to school officials and the press Aug. 1, Yes For Neighborhood Schools representatives said the group “has decided to postpone a legal challenge in hope that a new administration and school board will draw a new, reasonable boundary map and create innovative and community supported programs to close the achievement gap and provide the best education for all students.” Since January the group had been claiming a lawsuit against the school district would be warranted, arguing the elementary school boundary mapmaking process was not legally sound. The district's legal representatives have denied that claim. A letter excerpt: “Open letter from Nancy Frischmon,
Amy Jore and Kelly Scott Schwantz on behalf of Yes For Neighborhood Schools: “In light of Superintendent Krull's recent announcement to resign from her position, Yes For Neighborhood Schools has decided to change their strategy. With one of its goals now accomplished, the non-profit organization has decided to postpone a legal challenge in hope that a new administration and school board will draw a new, reasonable boundary map and create innovative and community supported programs to close the achievement gap and provide the best education for all students. “We strongly encourage the School Board to require a typical and legally sound boundary map setting process similar to the Bloomington School District's recent process. The boundary task force meetings were open to the public, multiple map options consistent with School Board boundary setting policy were developed and reviewed by the public and the School Board approved the final boundary map. …”

After an investigation that began in early 2010, the Minnesota Department of Commerce has charged Eden Prairie-based Modify My Loans US LLC with allegedly defrauding approximately 200 homeowners out of a collective $362,203 in advance fees, according to Matt Swenson of the department. The following is a portion of a department release: “The company, which began operations in Minnesota without a license, also allegedly used false advertising, failed to disclose to customers its precarious financial condition, charged customers fees for loan modification services which were ultimately not provided, and failed to make promised refunds. “According to the department, Modify My Loan US LLC (MML) charged many Minnesota consumers advance fees ranging from $2,000 to $2,950 for loan modification services, even though the company's contracts with those customers promised no such fees would be charged. Roughly 200 homeowners paid a collective $362,203 in fees.

“One homeowner who paid an upfront fee of $2,750 was given a version of the initial contract in which the money back guarantee had been removed. When she did not receive a loan modification, she did not receive a refund. Another homeowner paid for a loan modification in May 2009 and despite frequent attempts to get information on the status of negotiations on her loan, was unable to get satisfactory updates from MML. In October 2009, she received a notice of a sheriff's sale set for Dec. 15, 2009. On Dec. 7, 2009, MML notified her that her file had been reassigned that it was aware of the sheriff's sale. She did not receive any further communication from the company and has not received a refund. “MML allegedly continued to market and to accept payments from customers even after it was clear the company was failing financially and no money was available for customer refunds. “A prehearing conference on the case will be held at the Office of Administrative Hearings on Wednesday Oct. 5, 2011, at 1:30 p.m.”

PUBLIC SAFETY Police and fire log The following incidents were reported to the Eden Prairie Police Department Thursday, July 28, through Thursday, Aug. 4. Number of reported incidents, by type: • Burglary – 2 • Damage to property – 7 • Disorderly conduct – 5 • Drugs – 4 • DWIs – 5 • Fire calls – 5 • Suspicious person reports – 14 • Suspicious vehicle reports – 21 • Tamper with auto – 7 • Theft – 19 • Vehicle crash – 23 Details of some incidents: • A burglary allegedly occurred between 7 p.m., July 29 and 12:30 a.m. July 30, at Auto Acquisitions U.S.A., 6595 Edenvale Blvd. The owner called and reported two Audis had been stolen from the
parking lot. A manager said a lock box on the front door was missing. The lock box had a key to the office, where the car keys were located. A 2000 silver Audi was stolen and then recovered Aug. 7. The second vehicle was a gold Audi A6 wagon with Wisconsin license plate 350-MTL. It’s believed in-transit license plates were also stolen, so there is a possibility license plates have been switched. • A residential burglary allegedly occurred sometime 2:45-10 p.m., July 29, at the 15000 block of Lesley Lane. A condominium resident said she allowed someone access to the building through the garage, and when she returned, someone had gone through boxes she had inside the garage. Missing items included two printers valued at $359 and $149. • Items were reported missing from a vehicle in a tamper with
auto report, which allegedly occurred sometime between 6 p.m., July 29 and 8:45 p.m., July 30, on the 10000 block of Summer Place. A GPS valued $350, a pair of sunglasses valued $100 and a set of golf clubs and bag valued nearly $2,000 were missing. • At 9:45 p.m., Aug. 1, a theft of guns was reported on Lexington Drive. Sgt. Dennis Paulson said it later turned out the guns were just missing, and no theft occurred. “That kind of stuff does happen,” Paulson said. Please note, the incidents listed represent only a small fraction of the daily calls for service received by the Eden Prairie Police Department. All incidents are as originally reported to police, and may not reflect the results of further investigation; therefore, it is possible that the incidents listed were found to be something other than what was originally reported.
20 car windows smashed in underground parking garage BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS There were 20 vehicles broken into – all with a window smashed — overnight Friday, Aug. 5, and early Saturday, Aug. 6, inside two underground parking garages at Fountain Place Apartments in Eden Prairie, according to Eden Prairie Police. Fountain Place Apartments’ main office is located 8564 Magnolia Trail. Police don’t have any suspects, but it appears they were not looking inside the cars for valuables before breaking a window. Some cars didn’t have anything valuable inside, so nothing was missing, Sgt. Dennis Paulson said. Although, several GPS units were stolen in the incident, he said. The earliest car break-in report was not until 7 a.m. Saturday, Paulson said. If anyone saw anything suspicious or sees POLICE: TO PAGE 8

Eden Prairie Public Schools’ referendum planning in early stages BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s still early in Eden Prairie School District referendum planning. The school board has already approved going out for a general operating funds referendum, but it must decide by month’s end if it will seek to continue its levy for extra technology funds as well, which ends in three years. The deadline to notify the state auditor is Aug. 26, and the school board expects to make its decision by Aug. 23. In June, the school board approved going out for a referendum, in hopes to raise approximately $4.2 million in extra operating funds. That would help deflate an estimated $4 million to $6 million shortfall for the 2012-2013 school year. The $4 million levy increase would raise taxes on the average-priced Eden Prairie home by approximately $179 per month, the district’s Chief Operating Officer Patricia Magnuson said. Like previous referendum campaigns, finding volunteers to serve as chairs and co-chairs of three main committees could be difficult, Supt. Melissa Krull said. “I haven’t seen a long list of people wanting to take that on,” Krull said. “It’s a big old volunteer assignment.” The three main committees are for fundraising, communication and to encourage voting. Krull said they have a list of previous
referendum volunteers, and they may ask those people to volunteer again. During an Aug. 9 meeting, school board members said they would also compile a list of potential volunteers. Krull said she would also approach staff members to find an administrative point person to help volunteers and school board members to assist the campaign process. The school board members will also hit the pavement, pick up the phone and raise support for the referendum. On Aug. 9 each signed up to work under one of the three committees. Before they get to work, they will decide if the technology levy should be on the referendum and how. It could be tied to the operating funds under one ballet question or separate question. If they are combined into one question that fails voter approval, the district would not get any extra funding. If separated, they could pass or fail independently. Magnuson said the current technology levy brings in about $4 million per year and expires in three years. The tech levy passed in 2004, and if is put on the ballet this fall and passes, it would continue for an additional ten years, Magnuson said. The school board is expected to decide on referendum questions during the Aug. 23 meeting. Info: edenpr.org.

A true story – this time, the fire was real The morning of Wednesday, Aug. 3, began like most mornings, as I poured myself a cup of coffee. I was going to Excelsior mid-morning, so I decided to check my email and get a little writing done before heading out. Looking back, I still haven’t figured out if that was a good or bad thing. I started to work on my column about how important family is. I had just returned from my cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for some much needed time away. That column is temporarily put on hold for a more pressing issue. About an hour and a half later, the fire alarms start going off in my apartment building. Not an uncommon occurrence — they seem to go off numerous times a month. About 15 minutes into the racket, I remember thinking how annoying it was. I told myself, I’m not leaving until I smell smoke. Not long after that foreshadowing thought, a friend in the building busted open my door, frantically asking me to help get her dog on the second floor. Taken back by the alarm on her face, it dawned
CHRIS DILLMAN Title or other identification
on me that this might be the real deal. Sure enough, upon entering the second floor, things did get real. Thick smoke filled the halls and the adrenaline began to take over. Not knowing the origin of the blaze, the “Rambo” in me took hold and it became a life or death mission. We retrieved the dog, which appeared unaware of the calamity unfolding, and then we made it downstairs. I went for my computer and camera to bring outside. Since there was no smoke on my floor, I pondered making a second run in for the flat screen TV, but I’m sure some would advise against that. I put my life — read: camera and computer — into my car not knowing if I would have to make a hasty retreat. That’s when I noticed people on the third floor taking pictures with their phones out the windows.
They were seeing something I wasn’t, I realized, and within seconds smoke started to plume above the roof. “Ohhhh… this can’t be good,” I thought. The smoke began to get thicker and darker, and visions of hellish flames rising as the place burned to ashes amidst the terror of people flared through my mind. Well, that didn’t exactly happen, but what did happen was through the beauty of social media I was able to spread the scene unfolding, only to have people “like” the images. Doesn’t matter how funny my captions might be, you are not supposed to “like” things like that. I digress. Then the sirens: Never before in my life had I been happier to hear the sounds of rescue on the way. A crowd drew as the Minneapolis Fire Department arrived and attacked the blaze. The fire department was able to put the fire out before it was able to spread too far. However, the apartments adjacent to the burned unit are no more. As expected, people start getting to the bottom of this.
And now for the kicker: Confirmed by the management of the property, some crazy woman, who probably is in her mid- to late 20s, must have thought eviction meant “Let’s burn this place down.” Upon hearing this, I knew right away whom they were talking about. Hearing from the neighbor under her, she had apparently purposely flooded the unit below her (might have something to do with getting evicted). She’d also thrown her trash in the halls the night before, but that obviously wasn’t justice enough. Burn the building down, that’s the only way to solve that. Honestly, people never cease to amaze me. She even left her cat in the unit. Sickening. Hopefully she’ll have a “hug-me” jacket soon. All in all, nobody was hurt, and I have to give credit to the fire departments that protect us and can respond quickly to calls. Without them, it would be back to the days of throwing buckets of water on a building that is becoming an inferno. Risking their lives to save others, there still is good in people.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It’s not the whole truth To the editor: A recent letter writer (“The whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” printed July 21) falsely accuses the state legislature of raising property taxes. He even calls his false accusation “The Whole Truth.” Well, let’s get to the truth.
First, let’s start with a basic fact: Property taxes are raised by local governments. Period. The Legislature cannot raise your property taxes. Second, Local Government Aid for the cities of Eden Prairie and Minnetonka is zero. It has been zero for many, many years. It will remain zero under the new state budget. To forgive or not to forgive? BY TROY DOBBS • GUEST COLUMNIST There’s a story about a man named Dave Hagler, who worked as an umpire in a recreational baseball league in Boulder, Colo. While he was on his way to a game, he was pulled over for driving too fast. As the officer approached, Dave began trying to talk his way out of a ticket by telling the officer how he’s normally a very safe driver, and on and on. The officer waited until Hagler finished, wrote him a ticket anyway, and said if he didn’t like receiving the ticket, he could take the matter to court. The story goes on that at the first game in the next baseball season, Hagler was umpiring behind the plate, and the first batter up was – guess who – the policeman who gave him the ticket. As the officer stepped into the batter’s box, they made eye contact, immediately recognized each other, and remembered the ticket incident. After a second or two of awkward silence the officer asked, “How did the thing go with the ticket?” To which Hagler shot back, “You’d better swing at everything!” Have you ever been there? Have you ever wanted sweet revenge? Have you ever longed to get even? I am certain we all have. If you have been around people very long at all, you have been hurt or offended. It may or may not have been intentional, but the truth is we’ve all been hurt by another human being. When that happens, the Bible would have us choose forgiveness in lieu of bitterness. For the record, forgiveness is easier said than done. C. S. Lewis said, “Forgiveness is a lovely idea until you have to forgive!” The problem is that most of us simply don’t understand
what the word “forgiveness” means. The Greek word most often used in the New Testament is the word aphiemi, which means to let go from one’s power, to let go free, to let escape. So when you forgive, it means you cut someone loose. It means you choose to suspend the law of retaliation. Colossians 3:13 says, “Bear with each other and forgive each other whatever grievances you may have against one another.” You see, when we refuse to forgive, we carry around the person or persons who have wronged or offended us. And when that happens, we get hurt the most. Anne LaMott wrote, “Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and waiting for the rat to die.” In the end, the one who won’t forgive gets hurt the most. Moreover, the Bible tells us that not forgiving is not an option. Matthew 6:1415 states, “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” This teaching is rooted in Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross, where he cried out, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” Christ modeled forgiveness. The point is obvious for us. How can we receive forgiveness for our sins, and yet not extend forgiveness to others? How can we receive grace, but not extend grace? Who are we to withhold what God has given so freely? We learn how to forgive at the cross. We learn how to forgive because Jesus is a forgiver.

anything suspicious, “we really appreciate help from the public,” Paulson said. Paulson recommended not leaving valuables in vehicles, even when in an underground parking garage. Usually, police also recommend locking vehicles, even if valuables are not inside the car. But, in this
case, the criminals broke windows indiscriminately, assuming they would find something inside. “That’s the dilemma that we have,” he said. That dilemma thickens with the general, increased prevalence of identity theft. Even if there are not high-value items inside a car, criminals could still copy personal information from receipts, insurance cards or other items that are left inside a vehicle, Paulson said.

cutting her contract short, by “mutual consent.” The approved motion: “The board authorizes our counsel, Kennedy and Graven to inquire as to the interest of a separation by mutual consent based on Article IV, Section E of the employment contract with the superintendent.” A copy of Krull’s contract could not be obtained between the Tuesday’s meeting and this article’s deadline; it’s unclear what the “separation by mutual consent” process would entail or how much it would cost the district. A school district lawyer could not be reached after the meeting. The unanimously approved motion was introduced by Boardmember John Estall, and contained a language change introduced by Boardmember Kim Ross. The initial motion would have authorized the board’s attorney to “solicit a proposal for a separation” rather than “inquire as to the interest of a separation.” Commenting on the initial motion, Ross said she didn’t see a need for it.
“I think it’s premature,” Ross said. “I think what this board should be doing is having a discussion about what transition looks like and how to effect a smooth transition in the best interest of everyone in this district.” Estall said, “It’s a proposal to solicit from the superintendent if there is a desire to move on faster here. I think that’s an appropriate question to ask at this point in time. “If there’s no interest in it, then there will be nothing that comes from it, but I think it’s a prudent question to ask at this point in time.” Krull did not comment at the board table and was unavailable after the meeting. That proposal Aug. 9 followed the release of a statement summarizing Krull’s mid-year performance review, which indicated she had not made some improvements since her last review in November.

Talking about politics Minnesota Republican Seniors meet monthly to discuss the issues BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS Are you a Republican, 55 years of age or older and looking for a group of people who enjoy expressing their political opinions? The Republican Seniors of Minnesota is a long established group that meets the first Tuesday of each month for lively discussion, a guest speaker and lunch beginning 10 a.m. at the Fred Babcock VFW Post 5555, 6715 Lakeshore Dr., Richfield. Over 70 members from Richfield, Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie and other Twin Cities communities attend each meeting to partake in discussion on political books and newspaper articles, current political issues, political candidates and upcoming politically fueled events. “Our main goal is to get together people with like minds to express in national and local political issues,” Vice President of the Republican Seniors of Minnesota Bob Maginnis said. The organization supports the Republican Party and its principles by making their voice heard to the politicians. “We foster our people to contact the politicians on how
we feel,” Maginnis said. The Republican Seniors of Minnesota are not studying up on issues for themselves, but they are looking into the issues for their children and grandchildren because it’s the next generation that will be affected by policy changes, according to Maginnis. At the Aug. 2 meeting, KTLK-100.3 FM morning co-host Bob Davis spoke to the group about how important it is to read the news versus watching it on television. “Turn off the TV and pick up a paper,” Davis said. Davis continued to tell the Republican Seniors to read as much information as you can and balance it with your own life experiences to form your opinions. According to Maginnis, the whole group loved what Davis had to say and they all felt that he was very enthusiastic about his opinions. “This was the first time we ever had a radio host speak,” Maginnis said. Other speakers this year will include state Rep. Keith Downey, R-41A, and state Sen. Geoff Michel, R-41. “We would like it if Congressman Erik Paulsen came and spoke to us about the current state of affairs on the issues of national and local spending,” Maginnis said. For more information about becoming a member or to attend a meeting, call 952-828-1943, or email repseniorsmn@aol.org.

‘Magical’ jazz family Award winning family of musicians celebrates their matriarch’s birthday BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS In the small city of Richfield there lives a woman with an affinity for family, faith and Jazz. “I started playing the piano at the age of three by listening to the radio and putting my fingers to the notes,” Jeanne Arland Peterson said. In her teens, Jeanne began her award-winning career as a pianist and vocalist performing jazz to the world. In 1969, Jeanne became the second organist for the Minnesota Twins, following in the footsteps of her husband, Willie Peterson, after he passed away from cancer that year. Jeanne was the first woman to receive the prestigious Arts Midwest Jazz Masters Award for excellence in jazz musicianship in 1977. In 1998 she earned the Arts Midwest Jazz Masters’ Award and in 2005 was named a Minnesota Jazz Legend at the KBEM Winter Jazz Festival. And in 2009, Jeanne was inducted into the Mid-America Music Hall of Fame. She has had the admiration of both Govs. Rudy Perpich and Arnie Carlson as they declared a day in her honor and Jeanne has the distinction of being one of only two women inducted
into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, the other recipient was Judy Garland. Keeping her base in Minnesota, Jeanne spent 22 years performing on WCCO radio as well as around town on club stages and in recording studios, releasing five solo recordings throughout her career. Even though Jeanne’s artistic efforts included working with legendary stars such as Perry Como, Bob Hope, Sonny Stitt, Roy Eldridge, Bud Shank, Red Skelton, Dianne Carroll and George Benson, her favorite people to work with is her family. Jeanne’s favorite role is as head of ‘Minnesota’s First Family of Music’—The Peterson Family. The three generations of talented Peterson musicians that performs locally and nationally, includes her five children: Linda Peterson, Billy Peterson, Ricky Peterson, Patty Peterson Paul Peterson, and her grandson, Jason Peterson. The apple does not fall far from the tree as all of the Peterson’s have had successful careers of their own. Linda Peterson of Palm Springs, Calif., is a talented pianist, vocalist and songwriter, known internationally
for her original jazz composition entitled, “Too Late To Leave Early” recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her recordings have earned her international recognition as a respected jazz vocalist for more than 20 years. Billy Peterson of Bloomington is one of the most premier bass players in the world, as well as being a successful producer and arranger. He has worked with Ben Sidran, Eddie Harris, Leo Kottke, Bob Dylan and Steve Miller. Billy has been the bassist for the Steve Miller band for 24 years. Ricky Peterson of Eden Prairie is one of the most sought after studio and session keyboard players and producers in America. While continuing as the musical director for saxophonist David Sanborn, Ricky has a solo career as a vocalist/keyboardist, with five CDs to his credit. He co-produced “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” for Prince and continues to produce for many other artists. Patty Peterson of Edina is a world-class jazz and R&B singer, a radio talk show host on KBEM Jazz 88 in Minneapolis, is a mainstay in the radio jingle and voice over industry and now has begun a

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help
How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to August 15th receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Anibal (“Al”) Pabon II Anibal (“Al”) Pabon II, born October 8, 1965, age 45, of New Hope, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on July 22, 2011 in Millersburg, Kentucky where he was volunteering with the United States Army Cadet Corps. Al made his home in the Minneapolis metropolitan area where he worked for Hennepin County until last year. Al was preceded in death by his father, Anibal Pabon and his mother, Blanca Zapata. Al is survived by hundreds of friends, all over the world. Al graduated from Lane Technical High School in Addison, Illinois, in 1983. Shortly after graduating from high school, he joined the National Guard in Illinois and completed U.S. Army basic training and AIT. After an accident left him medically ineligible to serve in the military, he received an honorable discharge from the Army National Guard at the rank of Private First Class. After that disappointment, Al found other ways to serve his community and he became very passionate about his volunteer work. He was a volunteer member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) for 26 years where he had become a nationally known mentor to CAP’s public affairs officers. His talent and enthusiasm for journalism and media were infectious and he was known as an engaging storyteller and skilled teacher. Al was also a long-time adult leader with the United States Army Cadet Corps where he assisted with the administration of their national training program. Al was a part of Northwest Community Television where he was known as a talented television producer and enthusiastic worker. He served two terms on the Northwest Community Television Board of Directors. Al particularly enjoyed production work for local professional wrestling shows; "Slick Mick's Bodyslam Revue", "Pro Wrestling Today" & "SDW Wrestling,” among others. He was well regarded among the Twin Cities professional wrestling community. His passing was unexpected, but he was doing what he loved, working with cadets at a summer training camp and his last summer on Earth was a happy one. The people in charge at the camp reported that it took six people to replace Al. For anyone who knew him, that’s not surprising. His enthusiasm for everything he did and his upbeat character, even in the face of adversity, will be sorely missed by everyone he met. It seems God needed more enthusiasm and organization in Heaven, so he called upon Al. In lieu of flowers, his representatives request that donations to assist in the expenses for this unexpected event be sent to: The Anibal Plabon II Memorial Fund C/O David Palmer, Manager Merchant’s Bank 7300 147th Street W Apple Valley, MN 55124 A memorial service will be held at the Cornerstone Church, 3420 Nevada Avenue North, Crystal, Minnesota, 55427 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2011. Please join us in remembering our dear friend Al Pabon. There will be a Pot-luck after the service at the church. Please bring a dish to share. Interment ceremony will be held at a later date.

Review FROM PAGE 10 superintendent’s mid-year was released. Krull received a mid-year performance review June 22, a month before she announced she would not seek another contract. The superintendent usually receives an annual review. She had one last November and asked for another review in June. A performance review takes place in
school board meetings closed to the public, but a public summary statement is required once the review is complete. A summary of that mid-year review indicates some improvements had been desired since November but were not made. In the statement released for her November review, which took five meetings to complete, the school board praised Krull for her gains in narrowing the achievement gap, continued improvement on state test scores and other specific praise; it also noted room for improvement:
“Areas of focus the board wishes to emphasize include collaboration with the board, continued analysis and innovation of instructional programs, and more effective communication of key messages and major organizational changes with stakeholders.” The June 22 mid-year review also praised Krull, but some of those areas of focus did not improve. “We feel meaningful and necessary collaboration has not improved,” the summary statement said. “In addition the board’s REVIEW: TO NEXT PAGE

Review FROM PREVIOUS PAGE governance policies have not been fully internalized by the organization.” When asked if there were any consequences for the lack of improvement, School Board Chair Carol Bomben said the statement is the board’s public summary of closed meetings, and anything beyond that is private information.
Staffing decisions During the Aug. 4 meeting, after accepting Krull’s decision to not seek another contract, the school board made it easier to get involved in staffing decisions. Specifically, the school board suspended a policy that says the school board will leave the hiring, firing, disciplining and evaluation of staff solely to the superintendent. It was a proposal that Boardmember Ranee Jacobus introduced during the meeting and it was accepted unanimously, absent Boardmember Kim Ross.
The suspended policy was Board/CEO Relationship 3.3: “Except as required by law, the Board will not participate in decisions or actions involving the hiring, evaluating, disciplining or dismissal of any employee other than the CEO.” How long that suspension will take place is unclear. After the meeting, Jacobus said she introduced the motion because this is the first time a superintendent will step down since the governance policy was adopted. So, she wanted the adjustment for longterm reasons, to clearly delineate for future superintendent candidates what the superintendent position entails. Based on board discussions during the Aug. 9 workshop, the school board would participate in hiring higher-level executive staff; board members weren’t interested in getting involved with decisions about releasing staff members. Beside several changes within the administrative rank and file this year, three of five administrative positions (not including school principals) that report directly to the superintendent have been vacated or been filled by new people. The three include former Director of
Communications Camie Melton Hanily, who left in July, a position the district is currently looking to fill; Stephen West began as the executive director of educational services in July, and Tom May took over the executive director of human resources position earlier this year. In the short-term, individual board members could take part in interviews for the communication’s position, since interviews are expected the week of Aug. 22, according to Krull. In the long-term, the board talked about re-writing the to specify the board’s involvement in the hiring process.
MSBA help To help get some perspective on a superintendent transition process, the school board will also invite a Minnesota School Board Association representative to an upcoming meeting. The MSBA member could talk about the search process, possible consultant options and other resources they may have. That presentation could take place during a meeting scheduled 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 16 or during a Tuesday, Aug. 23 meeting.

Fall sports starting date Fall sports practices for all area high school teams will get underway Monday, Aug. 15. Several area teams won state titles last season, including the Wayzata High football squad. The Trojans lost defensive coordinator Matt Lombardi, who is the new head coach at Maple Grove High School. WHS has speed in the backfield with Erik Roti and Mitch Underhill and a top defensive player in linebacker Ryan Poppitz. Minnetonka will challenge the Trojans and Eden Prairie in the Lake Conference with a fast and talented group of receivers and running backs. Scott Benedict returns as the starter at quarterback. Senior Charles Webb is an All-State player in the Skippers’ defensive backfield. Hopkins will try to overcome the loss of AllState quarterback Billy Gregg, who graduated after setting numerous single-season and career passing records. All-State receiver Andre McDonald is the Royals’ marquee player. Eden Prairie was upset in the playoffs by Brainerd last fall, but comes back strong with 1,000-yard rusher Andrew Larson. Nick Davidson, a transfer offensive tackle, is being recruited by more than 20 Division I schools. Drake Michaelson, Tyson Reinke and Anthony King-Foreman lead Eden Prairie’s defense. Sam Rosol can kick the ball into the end zone and also take some long field-goal tries for coach Mike Grant’s Eagles.

EP gymnasts to compete in Visa Championships at Xcel Center Two Eden Prairie rhythmic gymnasts will compete in the 2011 Visa Championships Aug. 17-20 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Eden Prairie High School freshman Julia Garbuz has been a member of the U.S. Junior National Team since 2010. This will be her third appearance in the Visa Championships. Garbuz finished second in the allaround event at the 2011 Rhythmic Invitational in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., winning the gold medal in hoop and ball events. Garbuz was second in all-around at the International Championship in Turin, Italy, competing in the Junior Division (ages 14-15). Danielle Romashin will also be a freshman at EPHS and will compete with Garbuz in the Visa Championships. Romashin is a Level 10 elite rhythmic gymnast and first qualified for the junior rhythmic competition in 2008. This is Romashin’s fourth time competing in the Visa Championships. She placed third in all-around at the 2011 Rhythmic Invitational in Lake Buena Vista and took gold in the clubs event. Romashin also placed third in allaround at the International Championship in Italy as a Junior Division competitor. – COMPILED BY GREG KLEVEN
BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS When Eden Prairie was named as host of the 2011 state American Legion baseball tournament 18 months ago, Stacy Skjefte couldn’t wait to get started. The mother of EP Legion second baseman Tony Skjefte was anxious to volunteer, and her enthusiasm spread rapidly. “American Legion baseball gets in your blood,” said Skjefte, who co-chaired the event with Bob Buteyn. “It is such and honor for me and my family to be involved in American Legion baseball. Both of my sons [Tony and Lucas] have had the opportunity to represent Eden Prairie in the Legion World Series.” While Skjefte and Buteyn were the point persons for the state tourney, they noted that they needed a lot of help. Chanhassen Legion Post 580 provided low-cost meals for coaches and players throughout the event. The Eden Prairie Baseball Association supported the event and supplied many of the volunteers at the ballparks. “We had 36 sponsors,” said Buteyn. “Their donations made the tournament possible.” Several subcommittee heads did their part to make the event a success. Linda Peterson was in charge of the tournament and banquet programs. Mari Bray produced team photos. Chelle Grunewald organized the banquet. Scott Soderberg led the concessions effort and Dave Miller coordinated scorers and announcers. State American Legion baseball director Darwin Berg was impressed with the host committee’s effort. “You could see there was planning involved,” he said. The people we worked most closely with, Stacy and Bob, were always available, always willing to help.” Tenth District Legion baseball director Mike Perry said he was impressed with the tournament from start to finish. “The host committee did a fantastic job,” he said. “We had record banquet attendance [539], which could also be a national record. Paul Molitor was the banquet speaker. The tournament was

(Photo by John Sherman • Sun Newspapers) well attended, and the fans got their money’s worth with a lot of close games.” “My expectations were to have the best banquet and the best state tournament we could possibly have,” said Skjefte. The Legionnaires appreciated the banquet. “It was a gala affair,” said Berg. “In my time, it’s the largest banquet we ever had for a state tournament. And it came off without a hitch.” The host committee put in long hours to make the tournament successful, and
as a bonus, Eden Prairie repeated as state champion. Skjefte, an account executive with Cigna Health Care, and Buteyn, a warehouse manager with American Paper Supply, both took time off from work to make the state tourney run smoothly. “It was an honor for me to be entrusted to co-chair this tournament,” said Buteyn. “I took my son to T-ball for the first time when he was 5 years old. Now he’s 25 and he’s one of the coaches of the American Legion team. I’ve gotten more out of this program than I could ever put into it.”
Hole-in-one honor roll Eden Prairie golfers displayed their accuracy on their favorite courses during the past week while scoring holes in one. • Nick Bentz shot an ace on the 196-yard 11th hole at Bearpath Golf and Country Club. He used a 4-iron. • Gary Bergren recorded his hole in one on the 185-yard 12th hole at Olympic Hills, using a 4-hybrid. • Matt Cole used a 5-iron to shoot a hole in one on the 172-yard second hole at Daytona. • Joe Morton had his hole-in-one on the 185-yard 12th hole at Olympic Hills, using a 5-iron. • Steve Nenson shot an ace on the 225yard 11th hole at Bearpath. He used a 4wood.
