Burning rubber to stock the shelves
BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS In a letter sent to parents and staff Wednesday, July 27, Eden Prairie School District Supt. Melissa Krull announced the 2011-2012 school year would be her last. That’s when her threeyear contract will be up, and she won’t pursue another. During her tenure in the school system, starting as a teacher in 1984 and working her way up to superintendent in 2002, the district has received high marks for its quality and students’ academic achievement, but in the past year, bold district plans have stirred some controversy in its boarders, KRULL: TO PAGE 22

The popular Eden Prairie Lions Club Corn Feed returns Aug. 6 BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS How much corn can you eat? The Eden Prairie Lions and Lioness Club’s annual Corn Feed returns 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Round Lake Pavilion, 16691 Valley View Road.

It’s the third biggest fundraising event for the volunteer and service club, and for $6, those who stop by can eat as much corn as they would like. They can pay another $2 for a sandwich or hot dog. Drinks and beer will also be sold. “We serve a lot of corn,” said Lion George Schell. “Last
year we had perfect weather.” Previous events have been met with high winds or rain, he said. Hopefully, without jinxing it, Mother Nature will cooperate again this year. As usual, the corn served will be fresh-picked from Sever’s Farm Markets, based in
Eden Prairie. Schell said the corn is usually picked the same morning, so it’s only about a five-hour difference between the time it was picked and the time it’s served at the Corn Feed. “And, that’s the big differCORN: TO PAGE 17

Hennepin, Dakota county mayors get behind the wheel for food shelves BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS New Hope Mayor Kathi Hemken gunned it around the racetrack. She did pretty well since it was her first time hopping into a door-less stockcar, a la “The Dukes of Hazard.” She and other mayors from Hennepin and Dakota county cities are going to face off at Shakopee’s Raceway Park track in September to help raise money for area food shelves. On Thursday, July 28, after laying down a little friendly smack talk to other mayors for a commercial to promote the upcoming “Race for Hunger Mayors Cup,” Hemken took a stockcar out for a spin on the track. So, how’d her test spin go? “Fabulous. You really do have to pay attention,” Hemken said. “It’s not like driving on the streets of New Hope.” Although the list of participants hasn’t been confirmed for the “Race

Gates open 5 p.m.; time trials and photo sessions start 5:30 p.m., and opening ceremonies begin 7:30 p.m. Aside from seeing area mayors stockcar race against each other in several heats, guests can also see Minnesota Viking cheerleaders, Swarm cheerleaders, and retired North Star hockey players. Taking awareness further with a 5K walk Eden Prairie event to commemorate those lost to distracted driving, spread awareness BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s an excruciating situation that is easily preventable – death from distracted driving. That’s what Vijay and Rekha Dixit are hoping people walk away with after their 5K walk and awareness event Aug. 6 in Eden Prairie. In November 2007, they lost a daughter, Shreya Dixit, to a distracted-driving accident while she was on her way home from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It’s a pain they still live with, but for the fourth year, they hope to turn that pain to prevention with the awareness event, hosted by the group the Dixits started, the Shreya R. Dixit Memorial Foundation. The event has been scheduled 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, at Purgatory Creek
Park, 13001 Technology Drive. “I thought it’s a very appropriate site,” Vijay Dixit said. “It’s very central, and it’s very beautiful.” They have also placed there a park bench with their daughter’s name on it, he said, which also makes it a fitting location. Vijay Dixit was quick to note that it is not just a walk or fundraiser. There are several activities that are meant to inform participants and persuade them to drive safely, undistracted. That includes an annual speaker. Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman have previously spoken at the event. This year’s keynote speaker, Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, and his family share the pain that the Dixit family experiences. In 2000, his only daughter Rachel was killed in an automobile accident. Ritchie was out of the office and unavailable before this article went to press. WALK: TO PAGE 26

Combining reading science with people power Minnesota Reading Corps fights childhood illiteracy BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS AmeriCorps members have been helping nationally and internationally with local and national nonprofit groups to provide any needed service since 1993. A local initiative, ServeMinnesota, has combined with the network of AmeriCorps members to address early literacy through the Minnesota Reading Corps. “We have combined the science of how kids learn with the people power of AmeriCorps,” Kathy Saltzman, executive director of Minnesota Reading and Math Corps said. Since 2003, the Minnesota Reading Corps has been keeping up the fight against illiteracy in the children of Minnesota by grade three. “First you learn to read, so that you read to learn,” Saltzman said. But so many of the children are not learning to read by third grade, nearly 15,000 third graders are failing the statewide sanctioned MCA-II test, according to Saltzman.
The Minnesota Reading Corps uses the comprehensive, scientifically based reading instruction model that focuses on five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development and reading comprehension. According to a 2010 Minnesota state statute, reading instruction includes a program or collection of instructional practices that is based on valid, replicated evidence showing when these practices are used, students can be expected to achieve, at minimum, satisfactory reading progress. “We have shown that seven out of ten of our graduates from the program have passed the grade three MCA-II test,” Saltzman said. Each school district determines if they will choose to apply to be a Minnesota Reading Corps site by turning in an application. “Richfield is partners with us because they know how important reading is needed by third grade,” Saltzman said. This is the summer of our discontent U.S. has no trouble saying ‘compromise,’ has issues implementing the concept The summer of 1967 was known as the summer of love. Summer 2011 should be titled ‘the summer of no compromise.’ The symphony that is the United States is reaching a crescendo of disagreement. And it couldn’t come at a worst possible time as the federal government is faced with the task of solving the nation’s budgetary issues. Our elected officials have been charged with the sacred duty of making difficult decisions on behalf of their constituents. However, most politicians seem more worried about the next round of elections than getting anything constructive done. Republicans will not budge on taxes, while Democrats

refuse to cut spending, all with the underhanded intentions of getting reelected. These politicians must compromise or be ready to take responsibility for the calamitous consequences of not reaching a debt ceiling solution. A message to our legislators needs to be sent. Sometimes taxes need to be raised to increase revenue and sometimes spending must be cut to reduce debt. It is simple, commonsense logic. The point is: Get it done.
The solution may not be perfect, but in this instance doing anything may be better than doing nothing at all. This inability to compromise is a disease that is reaching epidemic status and it doesn’t discriminate. Unfortunately, the epidemic hasn’t been quarantined within the halls of the U.S. Capitol Building; it has infected state government as well. Minnesotans have seen its symptoms first hand in the form of an embarrassing, 20day government shutdown. The good news is a cure exists. There is always a way to show your dissatisfaction. Get to the polls and boot out the politicians who put their selfinterest before the state’s. As if it wasn’t bad enough that the ability to compromise
seems to have disappeared from our government, the epidemic is leaking into our sport institutions as well. The NFL lockout lasted nearly 5 months and now the NBA season is at risk thanks to another lockout, all because millionaire players and billionaire owners can’t compromise on who gets what slice of the financial pie. Once again, there is a way to fight back if you feel strongly enough. Don’t buy the tickets. Don’t buy the jerseys. Don’t buy the idea that bickering is acceptable in any institution. This lack of compromise is disheartening, to say the least, especially when considering that if it were not for compro-
Children are resilient and sometimes better at accepting change than adults. The more your child is exposed to different cultures and situations, the better they will be at excelling in this increasingly small and diverse world. One of the most important commitments I made right away was to always be positive in front of my daughter. I know she will mirror my reaction. Despite my initial discomfort with having to go to a new school, I made sure that my daughter knew how wonderful this change was going to be for her. As parents, we are perhaps the number one influence on our children (K-4th grade anyway) of how they see diversity and different cultures. If we are comfort-
able with it, believe me they will be too. Anisa Hashi Eden Prairie

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Moving personal boundaries To the editor: I love my daughter’s Eden Prairie elementary school. I feel like my family is part Forest Hills Elementary. We are part of something wonderful. We have lived here for ten years, and my daughter has gone to that school for four years. I volunteer there, I know the teachers. I know the cooks. I know the principal, and I know the front desk receptionist. Then I learned this last winter that my daughter would be going to Cedar Ridge Elementary School next fall due to the boundary change. I was surprised at my reaction.
I was really scared. I didn’t even know where Cedar Ridge was. We didn’t have any friends who attended that school, and I had never met the staff there. This was going to change so many things that I was comfortable with. That was my initial reaction, but then I remembered that the new elementary school boundaries are exactly what I wanted. I want every child in my community to have equal opportunities. I had to remind myself that this isn’t all about me. I had to remind myself that this was not going to harm my third grade daughter or any child for that matter. The new school that we are going to attend isn’t going to be any less than the school we currently attend.
OK, here is a letter to the editor To the editor: Fine, I’ll bite. This is a letter to the editor in response to Paul Wahl’s opinion column, “What would it take to get you to write a letter to the editor?” of July 14 (sorry for the delay), where he insisted that his opposition to the use of fireworks was based partially on the idea that since careless use of fireworks burns things down and taxpayer-fundLETTERS: TO PAGE 8

Jesus – crazy or creator God? BY JIM ERICKSON GUEST COLUMNIST Maybe it’s just me, but in our culture these days, a buzz of sorts seems to be circulating regarding Jesus and Christianity. Questions like, • Who was Jesus, really? • Why is there a whole “religion” formed around this guy? • Wasn’t he just a teacher or prophet? • What’s the big deal? While many of these questions have been asked for centuries, all around the world, perhaps more than ever in our post-modern-ish thinking, the answers are often not forthcoming. People seem to be shy or overly sensitive about the claims of Jesus. Personally, I
think Jesus is a “big boy” and can handle himself. In my view, the good news is two-fold: One, Jesus makes it really clear in the Bible who he is. It’s not ambiguous at all. Two, as I mentioned before, this is nothing new. Questions like these have been raised for over 2000 years and the answers are clearly available in the Bible. The Gospel of John (ESV, John 10:20) speaks to my second point perfectly. “Many of them said, ‘He has a demon, and is insane; why listen to him?’” This statement comes after Jesus miraculously heals a blind man who begged outside of the public temple almost daily and then claims he has
healed him because he is God. After these events, some believed him to be God and followed him. While others were convinced he was crazy and his powers did not come from God, rather demons. The point is that Jesus was clear with his audience then and now. He declares himself to be the creator God (John 1:3,4) and that he came into the world to save the world (John 12:47). He performed many miracles to back up his claims, included bringing a guy who had been dead for four days back to life (Lazarus, John 11:44). In addition to demonstrating his supernatural power, he also spent the better part of three years teaching and explaining to the masses (and religious leaders) why his claims were

What’s the big deal? If Jesus is God and his claims are true, then taking him up on his invitation to follow him is a really big deal, with eternal ramifications. I have been following Jesus for almost twenty years and I don’t regret it. Certainly it’s been a difficult journey at times, but Jesus has been faithful, loving and provided all that I have needed to live for him. valid in light of their history and the dozens of prophecies from hundreds of years prior regarding his coming. So in the end, there’s not a lot of gray area when in comes to who Jesus claimed to be. He declares himself to be Creator God. Others were convinced he was crazy and possessed. As for the questions I began with, Jesus answered those questions clearly. Who was Jesus, really? Creator God. Why is there a whole “religion” formed around this guy? Because he is God. Wasn’t he just a teacher or prophet? No. He is God who came into the world. Yes, he did teach a lot and performed many unexplainable, supernatural miracles.

Compromise FROM PAGE 6 mise the United States may not exist at all. Our Founding Fathers — men like Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton — compromised on much more difficult issues, such as how our government would be structured and what would be included in our constitution. Madison and Hamilton favored a large centralized government, while Jefferson passionately argued in favor of small government (sound familiar?). Nevertheless, these men reached a middle ground, a compromise that included a combination of both ideas, leading to the creation of the U.S. as we know it. It is time for our politicians and institutional leaders to take a page out of founder’s book. Webster’s dictionary defines compromise as a settlement of differences by arbitration or by consent reached by mutual concessions. Somebody please hand out some dictionaries.

Letters FROM PAGE 6 ed police and fire departments must fight the fires, banning fireworks will ultimately save the taxpayers money. First of all, I believe that Eden Prairie has a volunteer fire department so taxpayers fund the equipment and training but not wages for the firefighters. Second, even if Eden Prairie had a ‘round-the-clock staffed fire department, the fire station would be staffed around the clock, no matter how many fires were or were not started by fireworks. So no matter what, the budget for a fire department is not dependent on how many fires there are. It is essentially a fixed cost. Finally, good luck banning mother nature’s careless use of lightning to start house fires, which recently happened in Eden Prairie, costing about $120,000 of damage, none of which will be the responsibility of taxpayers to pay to repair but will fall to the homeowner’s insurance company to pay for. Stop exploiting the sense of injustice that a few citizens feel about taxes as an excuse to ban every activity that you find troublesome. Ellen Hoerle Eden Prairie

EP host families sought for exchange students In August, Academic Year in America is looking for Eden Prairie families to host high school exchange students from all over the world. This year, AYA is bringing hundreds of high school students to the United States to learn about American culture while living with volunteer host families and studying at high schools across the nation. American families have the unique opportunity to learn about the students’ culture during this mutually rewarding exchange. AYA can help families find the ideal student for their home. The result is an enriching, lifelong relationship with a young person from abroad. In addition, for families looking to learn more about a specific culture or language, hosting a student is a fantastic way to experience the world without leaving home. Students are ages 15 to 18 and arrive with full medical insurance, spending money and the hopes of experiencing life in America through the eyes of a caring host family. The students stay with their host for 5 or 10 months and attend the local high school. To learn more about hosting an exchange student with AYA, call Stella at 800-322-4678, ext. 5164, email aya.info @aifs.org or visit academicyear.org.

Can you imagine math as one of your child’s best subjects?

Friendship Ventures staff participate in Relay for Life Just over an hour after saying goodbye to campers with disabilities who had spent the week at Camp Eden Wood, a group of 23 camp staff members headed to Eden Prairie High School July 15 to participate in the Relay for Life. The group named themselves Crazy Camp Counselors Curing Cancer and raised just short of their $1,500 goal for the event. Incentive for participating in the event came from group member and Friendship Ventures Respite Care Coordinator Derek Hanisch. An Eden Prairie resident, cancer survivor and honorary chair of the event, Hanisch has worked at Eden Wood Center for three summers. Last year he suggested that some of the staff attend the Relay as spectators. They made it their weekend day trip and were motivated to do more this year. Not only did the group raise money and attend the event, they participated in several of the other activities as well. Three group members, Eden Wood Center Program Manager Kayla Anason, Recreation Leader Beka Bickel and Counselor Laura Klitzka all donated their hair for cancer patients. Hanisch and Counselor Katherine Kinnaird participated in the spaghetti eating contest; Kinnaird took third place in the spaghetti eating contest – missing second place
by one ounce of spaghetti. The group included 14 counselors (three are international staff from the UK), the camp recreation leader, day trip leader and lifeguard (from Scotland) and six leadership staff, including the camp nurse and health and medication aide and Anason, a full-time employee of Friendship Ventures and manager of programs at Eden Wood Center. After the Relay for Life, staff had a day and a half to recuperate and get ready to greet another group of campers arriving at Eden Wood Center for the following week. Friendship Ventures, a privately funded nonprofit organization, offers therapeutic and recreation services to nearly 3,000 children, teenagers and adults with developmental and physical disabilities each year. Camp and respite care programs are offered at three sites: Eden Wood Center in Eden Prairie, Camp Friendship near Annandale and Camp New Hope near McGregor. Participants have autism, cerebral palsy, attention deficit disorders (ADD and ADHD), Down syndrome, sight or hearing impairment, physical disabilities or a combination of developmental and physical disabilities. Getting their kicks: BY MARC INGBER SUN NEWSPAPERS Mention the word kickball and most people think of the goofy game they played in their third-grade gym class. But for members of the Toejammers kickball team in Minnetonka, it’s anything but silly. The team, which is a part of Hopkins-Minnetonka Recreation’s Wednesday night summer kickball league, won its second consecutive championship Wednesday, July 27. Next summer the team will go for a “three-peat.” Most of the teams in the league are made up of collegeage young adults who play with their friends or co-workers. The Toejammers are unusual in that the team is a mix of teens, college students and their middle-age parents. The team members are all
from the same Minnetonka neighborhood near the border of Wayzata and have been playing together since 2004. “It was my fault – I had read about kickball and it sounded like fun,” said Lori Stein, about the team’s origins. The team first played in a Plymouth recreation kickball league for a couple summers before the HopkinsMinnetonka Joint Recreation Department began offering one and it joined that league in 2006. In the earlier days, the leagues were “mostly adults with beer,” she said. Today, there is a no-beer and noswearing rule at the games. The fact that cussing had to be outlawed on a kickball field is a good indicator of the atmosphere. “It’s very competitive,” Stein said. “It used to be a lot

had to be a spectator for a few years before he was old enough to join his mom on the team. It was a similar situation for Karl Paske, who joined his mother,
Anne, when he was old enough. “We are the only ‘mixed’ team,” Anne said. “That’s my KICKBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Kickball
Upcoming Eden Prairie High School marching band events announced
FROM PREVIOUS PAGE favorite part of the team –it’s 18-yearolds high-fiving their moms and dads.” Team manager Jim Boyer said kickball was not as simple as people thought and surprisingly involved a lot of strategy. “People think they can kick a homerun every time and it’s not the case,” he said. Similarly, catching the ball while playing in the field takes practice as well. If you aren’t careful, the ball will bounce off your chest, so you have to bend your knees and cradle it in while catching it. For their neighborhood, the Toejammers has become a summer tradition. Several of the young adults who go to college out of state come back to play in the league each summer. After each game, the current and former team members who come to watch go out to a restaurant together. “My favorite part is the socialization and camaraderie,” Boyer said. He enjoys beating the younger teams, but thinks it would be fun to start a 40plus kickball league. Some adults are afraid to play younger teams, he said.

The Eagle Band will perform in the State Fair Parade 2 p.m., Aug. 25; during halftime at all home Eden Prairie High School football games, and in several field show competitions in September and October. One of the most important events this year will be the 20th annual Prairie Colors Band Festival, a marching band competition hosted at Eden Prairie High School on Oct. 8, featuring many bands from Minnesota and other states. Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

They currently have four exchange students working on the farm this season, Peterson said, two from France, one from Germany and one from Finland, he said. The farm has been providing corn for the Lions Club for around 25 years, he said. “Some of them were native sons and some of them were people that moved here. … It’s a special group. University committees pick one family farm from each county in the state for the honor, based on its “contributions to agriculture and their communities,” according to statement from the university. Sever Peterson said it’s an honor to get the recognition. “I grew up here with five siblings and myself, six of us, in my generation. And we all grew up here working on the farm,” he said. Krull FROM PAGE 1 which is unrelated to her stepping down, she said. The announcement comes before the November school board election, a referendum vote and before the first school year of the K-6th grade from K-4th grade transition and elementary school boundary changes, which are the controversial plans some have been lauded while other parents and community members have spoken out against. The announcement also comes before an Aug. 9 school board meeting, scheduled to discuss her contract. With contract discussions upcoming, she said she wanted to let the school board know her intentions; it wasn’t because she had a feeling the discussions wouldn’t go well with the school board, she said. Before Krull's three-year contract was renewed in 2008, community members submitted a petition to the school board requesting it renew her contract for only one year. Other petitions in the last year have asked for her resignation and to reverse the boundary changes. “You know it doesn’t play into my decision at all. I’m just – no. Not at all,” she said. “You know, you can’t make difficult change or improvements to school districts without expecting complications and challenges and even disagreements. You know, that’s kind of part of the job, and I think superintendents know that.” For the 2011-2012 school year, the elementary school buildings will start as K-5 schools and Oak Point will still hold sixth graders, so the one of the main, final K-6 steps won’t begin until the 2012-2013

Corps FROM PAGE 4 Richfield schools are Richfield Central School and Centennial Elementary School. Bloomington offers 16 participating Minnesota Reading Corps sites. At each site, the program offers personal, one-on-one tutoring; 20 minutes a day for children ages three to grade three. “The AmeriCorps members work along side the staff at the school. They do not replace the teacher,” Saltzman said. The Minnesota Reading Corps is still looking to fill tutoring spots in Richfield, Bloomington, Minneapolis and St. Paul. Becoming an AmeriCorps member involves a yearlong commitment to the
school year, after Krull leaves. When asked if she would like to see the district changes through – since the school boundary changes, equity work and steps to closing the achievement gap were her most proud moments – she said many of the changes will be in place when she leaves and managed by a capable staff. “In many ways the initiative is already launched,” Krull said. “So by the time we work our way through all these parts, I’m sure it’s going to be so well imbedded that I actually think it’s going to be just fine. I really do. I think we’ll see it through. “The heavy lifting around these [changes] is largely done and the staff are so talented and so prepared and so ready to bring it to life.” Even though there has been some administrative staff turnaround in the past year, Krull was confident all administrators will carry on the district’s vision. Some administrative turnaround includes the Executive Director of Human Resources and Executive Director of Educational Services, positions filled within the last year. Administrative staff is also taking applications for a Director of Communications, a position that opened in July. “We have a really strong team and any new hires will be equally strong. … I don’t think there will be any slow down at all. Actually, I think we’ll be able to keep the team very strong and keep it moving, with any changes that come,” Krull said. Krull said she doesn’t know what her long-term plans are, but they may involve continuing to address the achievement gap and equity work.
program and includes a monthly living stipend, an education award upon completion and eligibility for health benefits. “Any one can become a tutor,” Saltzman said. Before beginning any sessions with the kids, each tutor is required to attend a three-day summer institute. “They will not be a literacy expert at the end of the institute, but they will be trained in the most effective reading strategies,” Saltzman said. Also, a master coach and an internal coach within the school setting continually support each tutor. “Each of our members are making an impact on a child’s life. They help change the child’s life; the experience changes the members life as well,” Saltzman said. For more information about the program or to become involved, visit minnesotareadingcorps.org.

“He wrote a very nice note to us saying that it is only those who have lost their children like this, [who] know what it means,” Vijay Dixit said. But together they hope people don’t need to realize the full meaning of losing a loved one to prevent other loved ones from being killed. The point is to have participants walking away from the event thinking of drivers on the road as someone’s father, brother, sister or son. Everyone on the road has someone who cares about them, Vijay Dixit said, a thought that he hopes will keep people from doing seemingly innocuous but dangerous activities when behind the wheel. Participants also recite a pledge that emphasizes that point and then exchange a ceremonial thread as a symbol of protection, Vijay Dixit said. The exchange is based on the Indian ceremony Raksha Bandhan, where a sister ties a thread around her brother’s wrist and prays for his protection. In turn, the
brother promises to be there for her when she needs help. And to help imagine how much damage distracted driving can cause, they also bring in something directly from a horrific scene. “We always bring a crashed car on a flat truck with the story of a person who was driving – who was riding and got killed in it,” Vijay Dixit said. With these awareness activities and some of the materials and small gifts participants will receive, the Dixits hope the event will make an impact on people, not just serve as a memorable walk. Since Shreya was born in Connecticut, a concurrent event will take place in Simsbury, Conn., the same morning. Registration for the walk is $11. Donations are also accepted, and proceeds will go to tThe Shreya Dixit Memorial Foundation. But, anyone who can’t afford the registration price but would like to participate, such as college students, are still welcome to join, Vijay Dixit said. Registration is available at the event or online Info: shreyadixit.org.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie enjoyed its home-field advantage during the State American Legion Division I Baseball Tournament last weekend at Round Lake Stadium. Eden Prairie felt right at home but made opponents uncomfortable during four dominating victories on its way to a second consecutive state championship. The hosts outscored their foes 53-13 in the 16-team, double-elimination tourney July 29-Aug. 1. Tournament games were played at Round Lake Stadium, Eden Prairie High School and Miller Park fields as well as Braemar Park in Edina. Eden Prairie was scheduled to play Lino Lakes (Centennial) in the championship game Aug. 1. But that game was cancelled because heavy rains made the Round Lake Stadium field unplayable. Tournament officials declared Eden Prairie the champion because of its 4-0 record. Lino Lakes was runner-up with a 6-1 record. However, both teams will advance to the Central Plains Region 6 Tournament Aug. 4-8 in Dickinson, N.D. Eden Prairie is hoping to win that tournament and qualify for the American Legion World Series Aug. 12-16 in Shelby, N.C. EP placed second in the World Series last summer. Eden Prairie demonstrated powerful hitting in the state tourney, defeating Maplewood Green (12-2), Albert Lea (13-1), Osseo (18-5) and Sauk Rapids (10-5). Eden Prairie enters regional competition with a 33-7-1 record. “I feel comfortable with everyone in our batting order,” coach Scott Hackett said. “And we also have guys coming off the bench who can hit.” Eden Prairie second baseman Tony Skjefte believes his 2011 squad has more firepower than the 2010 team. “We have a little more power than we had last year,” said Skjefte. “We hit 28 home runs in 2010 but have 45 this year.” Impressive opener Eden Prairie defeated Maplewood Green 12-2 in the state tournament open-

The first baseman was the South Hennepin League’s Most Valuable Player during the regular season. “Our hitters, one through nine, can swing it,” said Peterson after the opening victory. “We have hitting depth in our lineup. “It’s great to play the state tournament in our home park. The home crowd definitely gives us a boost.” Tyler Ruemmele provided a two-run homer in the sixth. Blake Schmit and Skjefte had one hit and one RBI each. Adam Bray was the winning pitcher. He struck out seven in the game that was shortened to seven innings because of the 10-run rule. He allowed seven hits.
Eden Prairie’s offense kept getting better as the tourney progressed. EP beat Albert Lea 13-1 in second-round action July 29. Peterson had a solo home run and finished with three hits and four RBI. Ryan Maenke contributed three hits and two RBI. Ruemmele earned the pitching win, striking out four and allowing four hits. The company sells and installs residential windows, doors, siding, attic insulation, metal and solar roofing. “We started as a windows only company, but over the years have expanded to include more energy efficient products,” said Rhonda, who started the company after working for 10 years as a home health care RN. “I went from taking care of people to taking care of homes. We want to be your Energy Savings Solution Company.” Jim was a CPA working as the chief financial officer for a manufacturing plant before he joined Rhonda in the company. “We were founded after all the hassles and high prices we obtained while searching for windows in our home,” says Rhonda. “We felt we could do it better, cheaper and with less hassles for the homeowner. We become your ‘window guy’ for any problems, questions or
concerns. One call to us will take care of it.” With the federal government pushing homeowners to be more energy efficient, New Windows for America has joined forces with Xcel Energy and is now a trade partner. “Our relationship with Xcel Energy helps us help our customers save money by making their homes more energy efficient with attic insulation,” adds Rhonda. “We also made homes energy efficient with Energy Star certified windows, which can slash up to 40% off your home’s heating and air conditioning loss.” Solar roofing is another new product the company is installing so homeowners can eliminate a large portion of their home electrical costs, which in turn helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil. For the last nine years the company has received the Super Service Award from Angies List and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. They also have a 12 month Same-as-Cash financing program. Rhonda claims that a major key to their success is having the highest quality installa-
tion, adding how “most of our customer feedback is reporting how conscientious and meticulous our installers are.” New Windows for America offers a double lifetime warranty including glass breakage and lifetime labor. All vinyl replacement windows are guaranteed for as long as you own the home. The warranty in non-prorated and there will be no charge for glass seal failure or glass breakage to the present property owner or the subsequent homeowner. “If you provide lifetime labor warranty, it needs to be right the first time,” adds Rhonda. In addition to the lifetime warranty the company offers an energy guarantee. Their standard window is a triple pane which is 30% more energy efficient than double pane windows most other companies install. Besides being more energy efficient, Rhonda says other benefits of having new windows and siding include increased property value and security, noise reduction, enhanced appearance of your home and they are maintenance free and easy to clean.
Want To Lower Your Energy Bills? Slash up to 40% off the heat & air conditioning loss of your home.
Plus, the Remodeling Magazine's Cost Versus Value report concludes, when replacing 10+ windows with vinyl replacement windows, the home's immediate return of investment is 73.6 percent. New Windows for America offers all vinyl or a wood interior window that has the maintenance free vinyl exterior. This is a nice option for those who want to keep a real wood window in their home. The wood windows are available in both oak & poplar. “We have over 2,770 references, and have installed over 50,000 windows in the Twin Cities,” adds Rhonda. “Approximately 35-40 percent of our business is generated through referrals or repeat business.” Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The store is at 2123 Old Hwy 8 NW New Brighton. Information: 651-203-0149 or www.NWFAMN.com.
