EP police begin tracking gas station drive-offs BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS Filling up and peeling off, Eden Prairie police have been tracking gas station drive-offs closely. “We’ve always had gas drive-offs, but obviously when gas gets to as high as it is … and with the state of the economy, it just seems to [happen] more and more,” said Sgt. Dennis Paulson with the Eden Prairie Police Department. From January through September, there have been 128 reported drive-offs. Eden Prairie has 15 gas stations. Within the city, the most drive-offs occur at the Holiday gas station, 8051 Flying Cloud Drive, by the Eden Prairie Center. “They’re our No. 1 customer,” Paulson said. It’s next to the mall and next to the highway, making it an attractive drive-off spot, according to police. “Get in, get out and you’re gone,” Paulson said. GAS: TO PAGE 27

It doesn’t take much for Brody Johnson, dressed as Mario, to cajole some candy from Kitchen store worker Jan Wussow, right, who handed out treats with coworker Judy Pallansch, left, at the Eden Prairie Center during Halloween night Monday. Stores inside the mall gave out candy to a healthy crowd of families that arrived for the event. The city of Eden Prairie helps organize the event every year with the host, the Eden Prairie mall. Eden Prairie tutors FRESH-en up After-school program expands this year BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS An Eden Prairie after-school program has doubled its capacity for aid this year. The program is Friends Reaching Educational Stardom in Harmony, referred to as FRESH, which aims to help any student who needs reading and math help, but it has primarily served students of Somali descent. The program is helpful for those who are learning English or whose parents do not speak English, making help at home difficult, according to Nanette Missaghi, the district’s Integration Program Coordinator. It started in March 2009, serving 50 students in grades 5-12 twice a week, according to a report for the Eden Prairie School Board’s Oct. 25 meeting, when the board received an update about the program. This year they began helping 100 stu-
dents in grades 1-12, based on the number of students in need and the available funding. The program runs 6-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Oak Point Elementary Media Center. Licensed Eden Prairie teachers tutor the students. They give 30-minute lessons and spend the rest of a session working on specific concerns and homework in small groups. Tutors incorporate standardized test preparation into their lessons and they follow up with classroom teachers to track the students’ performance while they’re in the program, according to the meeting report. This year’s expansion came since the program used only $35,000 of its $50,000 budget last year. During the first two school years, funds were taken from the superintendent’s budget, and this year it will come from the general fund, Missaghi said. Since Missaghi said there are more than 200 students eligible for the FRESH program, School Boardmember Chuck Mueller asked why they hadn’t come forward with a budget proposal

for $250,000 or whatever it would cost to serve all students who qualified. Missaghi said they wanted to start small with what they could manage, since it was a new initiative and they had have licensed teachers as tutors. Missaghi and Stephen West, executive director of Educational Services, described other logistical and scheduling complexities, such as transportation, conflicts with other after-school activities and coordinating with other tutoring programs outside the district. “I would love to bring a $250,000 budget to you,” West said, but they wanted to start slowly and move up. FRESH initially operated on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but that conflicted with tutoring programs offered by Wooddale and City Hill churches, Missaghi and West said. After meeting with organizers, the district agreed to switch FRESH to Mondays and Wednesdays, which parents supported since it gave their students Monday through Thursday afterschool assistance. It has also started talking with the New American Academy, a program
started by an Eden Prairie math teacher at the beginning of the year. Asad Akliweyd (formerly known as Asad Shane) has said his program, which has volunteer tutors and operates on a low budget, has helped around 200 children since he started it in January. Meeting and organizing with outside tutoring groups has been one of FRESH’s main goals, Missaghi said. They are options parents appreciate. “They’re really pleased this is all available for their students,” Missaghi said. That collaboration fits with the program’s other goals, accelerating student achievement and creating an effective evaluation system. Students have improved because of the program, but the evaluation system could thoroughly track the impact FRESH has in the classroom, Missaghi said. The administration could offer another update about FRESH performance in June, West said, but they are working on a framework that could get the school board results at different points throughout the year.

Eden Prairie company honored with BBB Integrity Award Boy’s Electric nominated for ethical, reliable work BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Better Business Bureau has given a little extra wattage to a familygrown Eden Prairie business. Boy’s Electric of Eden Prairie has won the BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota’s 2011 Integrity Award, based on the company’s track record for ethical, reliable work. “We’re very, very excited,” said Boy’s Electric owner Kent Boll. The company, which makes residential service calls throughout the metro area, was one of 205 companies in Minnesota and North Dakota that were nominated for the award, separated into three categories determined by company size, according to Dan Hendrickson of the BBB. Boy’s Electric won in the first category, for companies with 1-10 employees. Anyone can nominate a company for the award, Hendrickson said, but the company still has to apply for it. It’s an extensive process. Only 30 companies submitted a formal application for the award, Hendrickson said. “I worry sometimes that it is daunting,” Hendrickson said, but businesses that go through the process know it’s worth the effort. Boll said the application consisted of
a 30-page report, proof of their guarantees on warranties, letters of recommendation from at least three customers, three business partners and community members such as the chamber of commerce. It even had a letter of recommendation from one of its competitors. Even though Harrison Electric Inc. in Plymouth is a competitor, the two companies refer their customers to the other when they are booked or can’t get to a service call, Boll said. It’s not very common in the industry, he said, but it works since they share similar business practices, gained from the same consulting and support company, Clockwork Home Services Inc. Boy’s Electric has four staff members – Boll, his brother, another technician and an office manager. Around six years ago, Boll parlayed his father’s refrigerator and electrical service company, Dr. Dan’s Refrigeration and Electrical, into his own electrical service company. His father still runs the refrigerator service business, now called Dr. Dan’s Refrigeration, in Young America. Boll’s business grew 60 percent in 2010 and has grown 67 percent so far this year, he said. It wasn’t too impacted by the housing market downturn since it just makes service calls for existing homes. The company doesn’t do contract or homebuilding work, he said. Boll said he plans on adding refrigerator repair to his business in 2013.

Sure, don’t vote, and see if I care (I do) It’s your right not to vote. No, really, it is. It’s foolish, but you’re well within your rights to stay home on Nov. 8 and not participate in the processes that have a distinct effect on your life. No one’s going to show up at your door and haul you off for avoiding the polls. Everyone knows voting is a pretty darn good thing to do, but apparently that’s not enough to get the unmotivated moving, so here’s hoping this column nudges you off the couch and into the voting box. Break it down however you want – as a nation, state, county or city, we are governed by individuals who are placed into positions of power by a voting process. Without this process, we’d be no better than a lawless

mob. We rely on that process to ensure we have leadership divined by the people to be the best we can come up with. And, if they’re not the best, at least the people choose our own elected officials. In my mind, they should be chosen by all the people. At least those who can vote. According to George Mason University’s United States Elections Project, about 2,123,369 Minnesotans voted in the 2010 general elections. The project also states that 3,799,328
The changing world of gathering news Maybe it’s my age or perhaps a generational thing that has caused me to notice, but the world of print media seems to be changing considerably from not too long ago. The use of a pen or pencil and a reporter’s notebook is becoming used less to new forms of newsgathering, which requires one to remain knowledgeable and engaged in these techniques. When I began my career in the media in the mid-’90s, most new technology was not available, thus requiring all of us in the field to pick up telephones, get in our vehicles, and travel to destinations near and far. This was in broadcast media, but the gathering techniques were on par with print, mostly. The Internet had not taken hold, and of course it did not yet have the impact on people in the
MICHAEL RICCI Burnsville/Lakeville Community Editor
way it seems to affect us all in many ways. And even then, my image of a reporter, from old TV shows and movies, was that of a busy man with messy clothes and perhaps a 5 o’clock shadow, and a “press” ID in his hat while wearing a trench coat. In fact, this idea of an “old school reporter” is so outdated that it is now being offered to all as a Halloween costume. It’s not and certainly has not been a representation of what a modern-day reporter looks like. RICCI: TO PAGE 13
Minnesotans were considered eligible to vote that year. Simple math will show that 1,675,959 legally eligible voters decided it wasn’t worth the time. There are those who do not care about the outcomes of elections. Those who feel the process has gone awry or honestly just don’t care about the quality of our roads, the education our nation’s – or more specifically, this city’s – children are getting, or the direction in which our tax dollars are being spent. So if that’s your goal, stay home. Turn on the TV, spend an hour or two with the “real” housewives of who-really-cares and check out of active society. It really doesn’t matter. To you anyway. Apparently 44 percent of Minnesotans don’t care, so at
least you won’t be alone in your apathy. But please, please, please don’t think you can only choose to participate when you feel like it and still be taken seriously. If you choose not to educate yourself on the issues, not to get to know the candidates and ultimately not to vote, please don’t sit back in your La-Z-Boy and complain about how things are going. Again, it’s your right not to vote. And, thanks to the First Amendment – personally, my favorite amendment – it’s your right to grumble and mumble about the sad state of affairs when you couldn’t take the time to exercise your constitutionally protected freedoms. But I don’t want to hear it.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Open letter to school board candidates To the editor: There’s been a lot of talk in the papers recently about the 300 students who left Eden Prairie schools this year. The message I’m getting is these are the children of families dissatisfied with the boundary changes. I’m not sure how many families moved their children for this reason. But, I’d like to challenge the candidates to consider the following. First, we have about 9,500 students in the district. They are still here. Second, we have overcrowding at one school and many empty spots at the others. Third, we haven’t had neighborhood schools for a
long time. Before the boundary changes, certain families have attended Cedar Ridge and Forest Hills from miles away, for example. Fourth, our schools are more diverse than they were 10 years ago. We were greatly imbalanced regarding schools attended by children receiving free or reduced lunch. We’ve had great success. Ninety-five percent of students at EP schools go on to further education. Do I believe we must make great strides in communication and transparency? That’s an obvious yes. Do I think we must continue to close the achievement gap? Without a doubt. Do I think we need to hold our district management’s feet to the fire regarding demanding curriculum, college preparedness, no excuses test results, LETTERS: TO PAGE 12

Letters FROM PAGE 6 transparent fiscal responsibility, expert staffing and proper use of the facilities taxpayers provide? Good grief, that’s what you’re there for. If our district is doing this at every school in Eden Prairie, you won’t have to worry about paying some ridiculous money to a branding firm. And just maybe, parents of the 300 kids will be turning their cars around from Minnetonka and putting their kids on a bus, even if it’s to a school a little ways away. Don’t be a one-issue candidate. Don’t make reversing the boundary decision your only issue. You have six elementary schools to run, not one or two. Hold the district’s management accountable for all of these concerns. Look at all the options and question, question, question. Be a pain. You’ve got a lot of responsibility. Remember the 9,500 that are still here. Sandy Luker Eden Prairie
Bratrud and Fox for EP School Board To the editor: Observing the actions of the Eden Prairie School Board over the past year, it is apparent there is a need for change. Historically, Eden Prairie has been one of the outstanding school districts in the state. Parents were attracted to our community in part because of our schools’ well-earned reputation. That reputation is at risk. The fact that several hundred parents have chosen to send
their children to neighboring districts, private or charter schools because of the actions of our school board is a wake-up call for all of us. We have an opportunity to choose new leadership for our district at the polls in the coming election. I have known two of the candidates for many years and urge your consideration of Karla Bratrud and Tim Fox. Both Tim and Karla understand the schools should serve parents, not the other way around. They have demonstrated their commitment to education and the success of our students through their involvement in our community for years. Karla has been a volunteer and has actively engaged the district in recent years to bring greater accountability and responsiveness to parent concerns. Tim has previously served on the Board and has a background in business in addition to being a leader in youth ministry at Wooddale church. They both have the skills and the commitment to move our school district toward academic achievement and accountability to the public. Please join me in supporting Tim and Karla. David Hann Eden Prairie Hann is the Republican Senator for state Senate District 42, which represents Eden Prairie and parts of Minnetonka.
Dave Espe for Eden Prairie School Board To the editor: Next week, we will have the opportunity to participate in a very important school board election. The choices we make will affect thousands of Eden

Prairie students and families for many years to come — it’s truly an important moment of our Eden Prairie citizenship. As citizens within the Eden Prairie school district, we are fortunate to have many quality choices. Let me tell you who will receive one of my votes: Dave Espe. I have been acquainted with Dave Espe for over 10 years and can attest to his strong moral character and abilities. Dave’s background in education and strong business acumen will be an effective combination to solve the many challenges our education community is facing. I’ve always found Dave to be extremely committed to his family, faith and community. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to be on many youth playing fields with Dave and see him in action. Fair, organized, fiscally responsible and one of the best communicators I’ve ever been associated with are just a few of the attributes he will bring to the school board. The election of Dave Espe will “raise the bar” of the education system in our community and will preserve the values we’ve come to appreciate about living and learning in Eden Prairie. I encourage you to join me in voting for Dave Espe on Nov. 8. John McCarthy Eden Prairie Caroline Nelson, Dave Espe’s campaign manager, also wrote in support of Espe.
Tim Fox for Eden Prairie School Board To the editor: I am writing to encourage those voting in the upcoming Eden Prairie
School Board election to strongly support the candidacy of Tim Fox. Tim is a committed husband, father and community volunteer, with an impeccable and proven track record. Tim has spent his professional career and personal time building collaborative partnerships around the globe. With over 10 years experience as a classroom volunteer, past service as an Eden Prairie school board member, service to nine international missions teams and 10 years experience coaching Eden Prairie sports, Tim knows the inner workings of the Eden Prairie school district. Tim brings the added attribute of a reputation built on establishing cooperative relationships between disparate factions, an invaluable skill in today’s community climate. Tim routinely displays calm in a storm, is a gifted and articulate communicator and will serve the constituency of Eden Prairie and their children, with selfless passion for the greater good. Tim is determined to rebuild trust and communication between the school board and community if elected. Tim will not ignore challenges and will address them head on while maintaining transparent communication between stakeholders. Tim has the endorsement of the Teacher’s Union, The Service Workers Union and families across the political continuum within Eden Prairie. Please join me in making certain that this stellar candidate for the Eden Prairie school board is elected. Please support Tim with your vote for school board. Alison Gulden Eden Prairie Craig Blixrud also wrote in support of Tim Fox.

Ricci FROM PAGE 6 Now, we look like everyone else from many walks of life. If you are a movie or TV fan, I am sure you’ve seen images of an old newsroom. The reporters, in between Lou Grant yelling to finish their stories yesterday, were still hammering away on old word processors, or maybe even typewriters. And with no walls to separate reporters from one another, it was chaos, and loud. This atmosphere fortunately does not exist here at Sun Newspapers, but it still does elsewhere. The difference, however, is it exists only in the energy that comes with reporting the news on deadline. In our time of nearly instant notification of events, or just communication in general, all of the old tools have been pushed aside to make room for more than just computers but all these are capable of. Much work is done by monitoring sites online, and in some cases, the Internet is the primary source for news tips. Some reporters no longer take notes with pad and pen but instead type notes either during an interview or after, having recorded the entire conversation with a digital voice recorder. You still see
reporter’s notebooks, but certainly an alternative is being us as well. The gathering process makes it advantageous to any reporter to know of and how to use new software and online sites daily. Instead of a fax, we have portable document files (PDFs). These replaced the traditionally faxed news releases. We still have a fax machine here, but it’s not used a great deal. Online streaming has made it possible to view meetings without leaving the office. In other words, a reporter can either watch a meeting remotely as it is occurring or watch it at another time. With the advent of sites like Facebook, Twitter, the new OurCommonPlace.com, as well as websites for local governments and many other key news-related institutions, reporters can now monitor activity, engage in any discussions, and most of all we can gather news using these new sources simply with an Internet access. For example, Twitter is being used by the Minnesota State Patrol to instantly provide information related to crash scenes, most notably the crash that claimed the life of two construction workers on the Interstate 35W MnPASS land. This allowed for nearly instant, quotable information from a direct source on the scene. Pages like Facebook allow a reporter to “like” an event or an individual to
www.minnlocal.com – Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 – Eden Prairie Sun-Current
monitor what is happening with the event or what someone said about it. Sometimes this can lead to news if it is not newsworthy itself. As widely used as it is, though, Facebook does not have what a news site features. The new Burnsville Common Place, a website for local community engagement and for residents to connect and share with their neighbors, gives us the ability to post questions about any imaginable community topic and receive input – in the way of sources – on an almost instant basis. When you are on a deadline, this is ideal. The difficulty as one who did not grow
up with all of this new technology is the need to remain on the cutting edge. It does not come as naturally to those my age and older, but I welcome this challenge as my belief is most people will eventually need familiarity with most forms of technology in the years to come. Now, with smartphones being so prevalent in our society, and the ability they have as “mini computers,” it’s not a stretch to say that the future of news gathering and reporting will continue to change. The trick is, as I’ve said, is to stay on top of this so you don’t get left behind.

Toastmasters develops leaders and communicators More than 200 Toastmasters clubs meet weekly throughout the metro area BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS A club exists where people can enhance their speaking skills, as well as leadership abilities. These people commit only one hour per week to attend the meetings. This club is called Toastmasters. There are numerous Toastmasters clubs around the metro area, with more than 230 clubs located within a 50-mile radius of the 55122 Eagan Zip Code. Toastmasters International was founded in 1924 and has had more than 4 million members join its ranks. Currently, there are 270,000 members worldwide who meet weekly at 13,000 clubs. Club 3561 is Blues Communications Plus, which meets 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Wednesday at the Blue Cross Blue Shield Anoka Room, 3535 Blue Cross
Road in Eagan. The club has 20 members, mostly Blue Cross employees, but others are invited to join. “One fourth to one third of our members are outside of Blue Cross Blue Shield,” said Vice President of Public Relations Bill Johnson. Toastmasters members are assigned roles for each meeting. The “Toastmaster” serves as the host or master of ceremonies. The “Grammarian” presents a word for the day that all members are encouraged to use throughout the meeting. Other members provide a thought for the day, give speeches or provide feedback on each presenter’s speeches. The “Ah Counter” listens for words and phrases used as pause fillers or verbal crutches – words such as “ah,” “um,” and “you know.” “That feedback helps us to hear our speaking ability, even though we might not want to hear it,” said Vice President of Membership Dave Johnson, who acted as the Oct. 26 meeting General Evaluator. The “General Evaluator” provides feedback to all meeting participants, describing positives as well providing

suggestions for improvement. Toastmasters Club 3561 President Jackie Maher joined the club nearly two years ago, and said becoming a member has been invaluable part of her life. “It’s been a great experience – lifechanging in every way,” Maher said. Maher said many new members are instantly hooked and drawn to the club. For many, it’s a highlight of their lives. “I’ve heard many say that this is the best part of their whole week,” she said. “Not only practicing their public speaking skills, but also their leadership skills.” Becoming a Toastmasters member helped Bill Johnson grow socially and as a leader. “Coming to Toastmasters has offered me an opportunity to come out of my shell,” Johnson said. “It’s not a pure social setting, but it’s a setting where people are trying to encourage you.” New Toastmaster club members are assigned mentors who help set goals and benchmarks. New members must present a timeline or framework for how many speeches they will give in any given time.
When Jackie Maher joined, she chose to give 10 speeches throughout the first one and a half years of her membership. “It’s really at your pace to help you along the way, which is really nice,” Maher said. Toastmasters focuses on two types of speeches, impromptu and prepared, Bill Johnson said. People who work in a management positions give impromptu speeches constantly, even if they do not realize it. Toastmasters can help refine those skills, he said. “If you have a job that requires you to interact with the public, you’re constantly doing impromptu speeches,” Johnson said. “Our club helps track you in speeches and leadership.” Though the Toastmasters meet weekly, it is understood that career and other outside conflicts may inhibit members from attending each meeting. Toastmasters clubs meet throughout the metro area, including Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Bloomington, Golden Valley, Richfield and Eden Prairie, Plymouth, St. Louis Park, Minnetonka TOASTMASTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Family Partnership receives national award Service agency has offices in Brooklyn Park and Bloomington BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS Most years the staff at Family Partnership foregoes the application process for national recognition, considering its accomplishments lacking in some category of the award criteria. In reviewing its accomplishments during the most recent year, however, the Twin Cities organization determined that it met the criteria outlined for the Agency of the Year award presented by the Alliance for Children and Families. The Alliance for Children and
Families agreed, naming Family Partnership the recipient of its Agency of the Year Award for mid-size agencies. “To be recognized is really a significant honor for us,” said Molly Greenman, the president and CEO of Family Partnership. The nonprofit organization has a long history in Minnesota. Founded in 1878 to assist families moving to Minneapolis from outstate farms and across the country, as well as immigrant populations seeking employment in the burgeoning Minneapolis grain mill and lumber industries, the organization continues its work to this day, providing counseling, education programs and advocacy, Greenman explained. Family Partnership’s Bloomington office opened in 1974, at the request of United Way and Hennepin County. The Brooklyn Park office followed a few years later. “There weren’t a lot of services out there for families and kids,” she said. “We responded to a need.” The Alliance for Children and Families includes about 350 organizations nationwide. Family Partnership’s award is its first. The award recognizes excellence in board governance, leadership, advocacy and programming innovation, according to Greenman. “It’s a seal of approval, in a way, from our national organization,” she said. “This exceptional organization has proven its commitment to living its mission each day,” said Polina Makievsky, COO of Alliance for Children and Families.

organization works through schools, churches, service organizations, social workers and correctional institutions to assist people with a wide array of issues. From assisting victims of domestic abuse to kindergarten readiness programs, Family Partnership’s staff of about 100, and a network of more than 1,600 volunteers, provide assistance and outreach to residents primarily in Minneapolis, St. Paul and first-ring suburbs, Greenman said. “We cannot be all things to all people,” she noted, but calls for assistance are never turned away. “We will help them get to the service they do need,” she said. The organization is funded through government contracts, United Way, private foundation and corporate grants and individual donations, according to Greenman. Family Partnership charges for some services, such as counseling, but those often qualify for medical assistance dollars, she noted. Its annual budget is $8.5 million, Greenman said.

PetPAC FROM PREVIOUS PAGE owner of 2-year-old Hogan, a yellow lab. “I wanted to do something that I was more passionate about.” He spent nearly two years researching and scouting locations before landing on the 30,000-square-foot facility, which includes an 18,000-square-foot outdoor play yard. Despite the slow economy, he said he was not concerned about opening Lucky Dog. It is the first dog daycare and overnight boarding facility in Bloomington, and is near the airport and Mall of America – and in an industry he called “pretty recession proof.” “People fall in love with their dogs and they do whatever they can to make them happy,” Morehouse said. He said it’s not that people didn’t always love their dogs, but now there are more options to take care of and pamper them. Morehouse heard about PetPAC from another member Ali Jarvis, founder of SidewalkDog.com, an online hub for information about dog-friendly life in the Twin Cities. SidewalkDog.com hosts “Sushi with Your Poochie” events in the summer
and invites other PetPAC members and companies to connect with dog owners. Morehouse was planning his first annual Howl-oween Party and Dog Adoption Fair Oct. 30 that would also bring in other vendors. “The pet business is a huge industry, but it’s a fairly tight knit industry too,” he said. Tengdin said PetPAC, which meets once a month, aims to become the go-to resource for the pet industry in the Twin Cities. This fall, it is hosting twopart seminar “Growing Your Pet Business” for members and non-members. About 30 attended the first session Oct. 17 with presentations on marketing and promotion from Carolyn Greene of Edina-based Marketing Plus International and Linda Anderson, cofounder of Angel Animals Network, a PetPAC member. The second session Monday evening, Nov. 7, at The Depot Coffeehouse in Hopkins, will feature PetPAC member Patrick Nau of Minneapolis-based Patrick Nau Photography on strategic partnerships. Nau partners with pet supply store chain Chuck & Don’s. Gene Wood, state director of Business Networking International and owner of Life’s Pure Balance, which sells cleaning products safe for pets, will also speak.

Choosing a major is often met with trepidation. College students may feel pressured to choose a major when they are less than certain about what they want to study. Majors aren’t set in stone and students have the opportunity to switch concentrations if their original choice isn’t the right fit. Perhaps now more than ever, there is pressure on students to pick the right college major. In this weak economy, experts are touting advice on choosing a major that gives students the best chance of finding a job after graduation. The National Center for Education Statistics says that in 2007-2008, the most popular majors were business, social sci-
ences, history, and education. According to Capital University, students usually have so many interests that they have difficulty narrowing their choices. Their first inclination is not to declare a major and wait to see if they find their niche. In general, two out of every three university students change majors at least once. This should give hope to students who feel they need a chance. Here are some tips that should help with the process. * Wait to declare. Many educators advise waiting a semester or two before declaring a major. Take a variety of elective courses and general education classes that will fit degree

Apple Valley-based CitiLink Communications bought out Nextera Communications now has largest fixed wireless service in state BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Apple Valley-based CitiLink Communications was purchased by Nextera Communications earlier this month. Nextera is a wireless telecommunications provider specializing in providing businesses with Internet and telephone service. Nextera offers local telephone service, long distance, service, T-1, DSL, voice over Internet and wireless Internet to businesses throughout the state. With the acquisition of CitiLink, Nextera now has the largest fixed wireless service in the state, said Nextera Marketing Manager Amanda MacDonald. “It was a good fit for us,” said MacDonald. Is Water Ruining Your Chimney? The Professionals At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage.

The CitiLink acquisition will provide these services to the underserved communities within the southern metro area. MacDonald said the decision to purchase CitiLink was made in late 2010. “We were looking at expand down in the southern metro suburbs,” said Nextera President Greg Arvig. “It became kind of a natural fit. It gives us a metro-wide footprint.” Nextera’s wireless service is not cellular, which is a common misconception, said MacDonald. Nextera markets itself to small and mid-sized businesses throughout the state, MacDonald said. “Banks and healthcare services are two types of markets that we’re seeing a trend with those businesses using our services,” she said. MacDonald said the company offers primary service, as well as a backup service to its business clients. “For backup, there’s a separate connection or path,” MacDonald said. “If something happens to the primary connection, we can route all their traffic to their wireless backup so they can keep their business running at all times.”
2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to November 30 receive $100 off when you mention this article.

requirements regardless of major. * Take an assessment test. The career or guidance office may offer some of the standardized tools to help students find an area of concentration. * Do your research. If you’re considering a new major, talk to your advisor about what will be required of that new major, including classes and other coursework. You can also talk to students currently studying under that major. Knowing what to expect beforehand can make the decision-making process a little easier. * Talk to the dean. Many colleges and universities have deans or advisors in charge of students in certain majors. They will know the courses required for a degree. Switching majors may involve taking or re-taking some courses that will fit with the new major. It may also mean that some courses that were taken cannot be applied to the new major. This can result in having to take more classes one semester or taking an extra semester to graduate. * Consider finances. Taking different classes or stretching out your
college career an additional semester might cost more money. * Assess whether your major truly matters. Many liberal arts or general studies majors are applicable in many fields. Therefore, switching majors may not even be necessary. Think about continuing with a current major and then concentrate or minor in something more specific. * Determine if you really need to switch majors. Sometimes the decision to switch majors is made for you. If you are having difficulty keeping up in class or find the courses really do not interest you, it may be time to change. * Consider a double major. Students who ultimately cannot decide can choose to study for a double major. This may look good on a resume and show potential employers that you are not afraid of work. It also enables you to study two different subjects in detail. Keep in mind that double majors will mean a lot of extra work and may delay graduation so that you can get all the credits needed. Choosing a major is seldom an easy decision. Rest assured that if the first choice isn’t ideal, students can switch majors successfully with few obstacles.

Gas FROM PAGE 1 Paulson said a detective has been working with loss prevention staff at Holiday and checking in with different gas stations in Eden Prairie to see how they can help each other curb driveoffs. Officers are working on tracking the specific number of drive-offs in the city to get a finger on how much of problem it is. Even so, some gas stations don’t report drive-offs because they believe it’s just part of doing business, he said It’s not always a straight forward or simple situation though. When someone does take off without paying, it can be hard to get a physical description of the driver along with the license plate number. And the driver isn’t necessarily the vehicle owner. Sometimes, a driver will say he swiped his credit card but didn’t realize it had not registered, Paulson said. Once in a while, when a gas station is busy, the attendant will get an incorrect description or the wrong license plate of a drive-off vehicle. “That doesn’t happen very often,” Paulson said. “Most of the clerks are trained very well.” Many times, Paulson said, if the department can’t build a case worth prosecuting – since proving intent to steal is difficult – they can only ask the alleged perpetrator to pay the gas station back. For instance, last week, a license plate number appeared on the state
database that was linked to a May drive-off that took place at the Holiday gas station near the Eden Prairie mall, Paulson said. It was off the system for months because the registered owner was arrested for DWI in January and the vehicle’s plates were forfeited, so the plate numbers were not on file. Paulson now has the license plate number after it was re-registered. The gas station manager also provided a description of the car and a description of the driver, Paulson said. However, Paulson also has information that could make it seem like the driver had thought she paid at the pump. So, that will make it difficult to prove she intended to steal, Paulson said. Since it took place in May, he’ll have to go to the registered vehicle owner, say the police department has a description of a driver and vehicle that matches her and her vehicle and ask if she remembers being there at the time. It could be a case where a prosecution can’t occur, and all Paulson could do is ask the driver to speak with the manager and work out a re-payment. “I don’t like necessarily doing that,” Paulson said, “but I may have a real hard time proving that she intended to drive away.” From his standpoint, it’s a preventable crime, and the Eden Prairie taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for the police officers’ time investigating these lower-priority cases, Paulson said. Pre-pay or pay-at-the-pump could prevent these drive-offs, he said. Holiday gas station representatives could not be reached to comment.
Domestics FROM PAGE 1 on the Domestic Abuse Response Team, known as DART. The unit won the Minnesota Crime Prevention Association’s Team of the Year Award in October 2010 for its services. DART actively works with domestic abuse victims and potential victims to reduce violence in homes. That message is also on the heels of Viking’s defensive back Chris Cook’s felony charge for allegedly strangling his girlfriend at his Eden Prairie residence Oct. 22. In Eden Prairie, Sgt. Dennis Paulson said, from his perspective, there are domestic calls on a regular basis. There is about an arrest once a week and a domestic call of some kind – whether verbal or physical – during every shift, it seems. Specifically, in 2009 there were 370 reports of a domestic situation in Eden Prairie, 95 of which were incidents of domestic violence. Violent incidents increased in 2010. There were 344 reports of a domestic situation in the city, 126 of which were incidents of domestic violence. It doesn’t have to be extreme to be domestic abuse, Paulson said. It could be verbal abuse, a push, a slap, a hit. To further reduce domestic violence, Eden Prairie police, as well as Edina and St. Louis Park, have implemented a lethality screening – questions that officers responding to a domestic call can ask the victim. Bloomington and Richfield, the other two cities Cornerstone serves, plan on

implementing it, Olson said. Cornerstone hired Olson under a federal grant to coordinate prevention and awareness efforts among the five cities Cornerstone serves, the police departments and judicial system. Paulson, now leading Eden Prairie’s DART, said the lethality screening is meant to measure how much of a real or potential danger someone could be in. The screenings are given when responding to all domestic abuse calls involving intimate partners who live together. The first three of the dozen yes or no questions can trigger the biggest alarms, Paulson said. They ask if a partner has ever used or threatened to use a weapon against the other, if the partner has ever threatened children and if the victim thinks if his or her partner is trying to kill them. They may seem like obvious questions, but the form has created a regimented standard for victims, potential victims, the police department, advocates and the court system. Since Eden Prairie police officers and other departments screen someone in every domestic call, something that could otherwise be missed is accounted for, Olson and Paulson said. Olson offered an example. There was an incident where police responded to a verbal argument at a home. After talking with and screening the woman while the man was gone, police found out she had been in an abusive relationship for years. If the police had not gone through the

EP ready to defend section title Minnetonka is Eagles’ opponent Friday night BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Two teams riding hot streaks will meet for the Class 5A, Section 6 football title at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at Eden Prairie’s Aerie Stadium. Eden Prairie (8-1) will take on Minnetonka (8-2) in an all-Lake Conference final. Eden Prairie smashed Edina 48-20 in the section semifinals Oct. 29 while Minnetonka was equally impressive in dispatching Chanhassen 41-10. Even though his record against Minnetonka is 11-1 lifetime, Eden Prairie head coach Mike Grant is wary of the Skippers. “Minnetonka has the best talent of anybody, year in and year out,” Grant said ear-
lier this week. “They have size and speed this year. It will be hard to figure out a way to beat them.” Eden Prairie has already beaten Minnetonka once this year. During the regular season, the Eagles blanked Tonka 16-0. The Skippers are a high-scoring team, but Eden Prairie’s first-team defense has yielded only one touchdown all season, and that came in the opener against Champlin Park. “When you have a defense as good as ours, it’s everybody,” said Grant. “Tyson Reinke has had an outstanding season in the defensive line and Drake Michaelson is having a great year at linebacker. Ryan Gunderson, one of our corners, has four or five interceptions. Matt Knoff has played very well at safety.” In its game with Edina, Eden Prairie gave up one touchdown on a blocked punt DEFEND: TO PAGE 31

Kira Zubar Going into next week’s Section 6AA girls swimming and diving meet, Eden Prairie’s Zubar has the state’s second-fastest time in the 500yard freestyle (5:05.43). She is also third fastest in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.86).
Henry Zurn Zurn’s performance helped the Eden Prairie High boys cross country team earn a state-meet berth with its second-place finish in Section 6AA. Zurn ran a 5K time of 16:17 to place 10th in the section meet at Gale Woods Farm.

Eagle boys cross country finds way to final day State Class AA meet is Nov. 5 in Northfield BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Senior captain Andrew Hansen can live with finishing one place away from qualifying for the State Class AA cross country meet as an individual because Eden Prairie placed second to qualify for state as a team at the Section 6AA meet last Wednesday. Hansen does not even have to envy junior teammate Henry Zurn, who did secure the 10th and final individual place going to state. Zurn joins sophomore Cal Lawton who placed sixth. The state meet runs Saturday, Nov. 10 at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The girls go at 10 a.m. and boys at 11 a.m. Sophomore Hannah Jeter will represent the Eagle girls after placing second overall at sections. The girls team was third, just missing a trip to state. “Our boys ran one of the most competitive races that Eden Prairie has ran in many years,” said coach Jeff Lindlief. “Every single runner knew exactly what they needed to do for us to qualify. Even so, they barely nudged out Wayzata, which is a testament to the incredible strength and depth of this section.” For Hansen, the disappointment of not making the top 10 is far overshadowed by the joy of the team’s success. There was no way he was going to be left out again. As a sophomore he was an
alternate on the Eden Prairie team that won the state title. He was in the team picture and has the medal, but he longed to be more a part of it by participating. Last season Eden Prairie did not qualify as a team for the first time in eight years. The top three runners last season graduated, leaving the uncertainty about who would be the top seven this season. Four seniors were joined by two juniors and three sophomores, who filled the gaps. “We started the season strong, but did not improve as much as we wanted,” said Hansen. “When we finished third in the conference behind Edina and Wayzata, we knew we had to do better than that to get to state.” At the section meet all of the boys “stepped it up” to post their fastest times ever. The top four scorers placed in the top 13. Following Hansen were senior Ricardo Reyes (13), sophomore Jacob Young (16), junior Ryan Stewart (18) and sophomore Jack Odzer (34). “We all knew what we had to do and spent weeks preparing for the section meet,” adds Hansen. “We knew what strategy it would take. It came down to who wants to go to state bad enough.” Hansen said all the runners trust in coach Lindlief, knowing if they do what he says for workouts and training, the team could reach its goal. “Some teams trapper to be ready for the season, where we train hard in the summer and even harder once the season starts,” says Hansen. “Our focus is
Kyle Anderson (440) of the Minnetonka High boys cross country team holds off Eden Prairie’s Cal Lawton (120) to finish fifth in the Section 6AA meet Oct. 26 at Gale Woods Farm. Both Anderson and Lawton qualified for the state meet, which will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at St. Olaf College in Northfield. (Photo by John Sherman – Sun Newspapers) to peak at the section and state meets.” Coach Lindlief said the section meet was one of the best “team goals” he has seen executed in several years. “We also knew that it was very likely that we could run outstanding and still not qualify,” adds Lindlief. “Regarding state, if the boys run competitively like they did in sections, they have a chance at placing in the top five. This would be an outstanding accomplishment for this group of runners.” Lindlief said Jeter ran one of the fastest times in EP school history on the Gale Woods section meet course.
“She qualified by running an extremely smart and gutsy race on a challenging course,” said her coach. “Hannah just missed being All-State last year as a ninth-grader, but has a very good chance of placing highly in this year’s meet.” Three sophomores paced the Eagle girls at the section meet. Trailing Jeter was sophomores Eryn Stewart (18) and Olivia Dengel (24). Next came seniors Andria Tauer (26) and Carlin Schulz (27), plus ninth-grader Samantha Schnirring (31) and junior Brittany Platt (37).
Return of injured Eagle helps volleyball team fly in playoffs BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS The return to action of some injured Eden Prairie volleyball players has helped the Eagles to fly right in the Class 3A, Section 6 tournament. The No. 1 seed Eagles defeated Orono 3-0 last week, advancing to the semifinals against No. 4 Hopkins on Tuesday, after this issue went to press. The section title game is 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 at Edina. The coaches voted to move the final to Saturday, but the logistics could not be worked out. Senior hitter Ellen Piechowski was sidelined with a partial tear of a knee ligament on Oct. 13 during Eden Prairie’s win over Wayzata that clinched the league title and top section seed.
A couple weeks later she returned to help power the Eagles over Orono to open section play. Piechowski had nine kills, six digs and a “remarkable” six service aces. “You don’t see that very often,” said Becker about the six aces out of 20 serve attempts. “When you score aces you are placing the ball well, making it difficult for opponents to move to it. Ellen also has a float serve, like a knuckle ball where it can move on players at the last second.” Becker said he can’t recall seeing six aces in his career. He says it does not happen much these days because players are so good. The coach also was surprised because it was Piechowski’s first match back from the injury. The 5-10 outside hitter is
a six-rotation player who does it all. Piechowski didn’t do any of it last year, missing the entire season with an ACL knee injury, which has happened to both knees in her career. “When you don’t have players in the program, you forget what impact they can have when healthy,” said coach Chad Becker about Piechowski. After losing Piechowski, the team also lost the services of junior hitter/setter Leesa Hulstrand to a concussion suffered at the Eastview tournament Oct. 15. The Eagles lost the next match to Hopkins to end the regular season. Both players were ready to go when EP went against the Royals at sections Tuesday. Against Orono, junior captain Sarah Wilhite powered the offense with 24 kills
and 10 digs for the “double double.” Junior Jamie Cairncross also had 10 digs as the libero. Senior hitter Anna Domalewski added three ace serves and setter Maddie Reese had 31 set assists and six digs. If the Eagles get past Hopkins they will go against either No. 2 Wayzata or No. 3 Minnetonka in the section title match. Both are good teams, but Becker is more leery of Wayzata, which played in the last two state championship matches. “Wayzata has the history and experience playing at a high level,” adds Becker. “Plus, it is hard to beat a team for a third time in a season. We would have to play well against either team to make it to state.”

Decision to go out for Eagle soccer proves beneficial Blanche leads EP in first varsity season BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Junior forward Natalio Blanche decided not to go out for the Eden Prairie boys soccer team last season because “I felt like I was not ready to play at a level like this.” Blanche was more than ready for the varsity level this year, leading the team in scoring with 17 goals and seven assists. His header scored the winning goal with less than three minutes to play in the Section 2A title game victory over Jefferson. It is the first state tourney trip for the Eagles since 2007. The Eagles (13-3-3) opened the state Class AA tournament last week with a 4-1 victory over Blaine, advancing to the state semifinals against Maple Grove (13-4-2) played Tuesday after this issue went to press. The Crimson upset previously unbeaten and No. 2 seed North High. The state title game is 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 in the Metrodome. The other bracket had unbeaten Eastview against Minneapolis Southwest. Goals against Blaine were scored by junior Chris Hurst, sophomore Abdul Omar, senior Dane Niemira and senior
Defend FROM PAGE 29 and two late rushing touchdowns with its reserves on the field. EP’s offense produced 27 points in the first quarter and by halftime the Eagles were ahead 41-6. “On the second play of our first possession, we scored on a 61-yard pass play from Grant Shaeffer to Zach Hovey,” said Grant. Shaeffer followed up with a 5-yard TD run. Andrew Larson ran 1 yard for another score and Jacob Woodring capped the first-quarter scoring with a 3-yard touchdown. Shaeffer went back to the air in the second quarter, hitting Roy McGhee on a 53yard touchdown pass play. Also in the second quarter, Larson scored on a 35-yard run. Chris Erickson scored on a 2-yard run
Mason Moore. “Natalio came out for a couple days last year and decided not to play,” recalls coach Vince Thomas. “This year he came with renewed vigor. He is very skilled, creative and has a great understanding of the game, instinctively. I like to say great scorers are born not made.” Blanch grew up playing youth soccer in Argentina since he was 5. His family moved to Minnesota three years ago. He played on the Eagle ninthgrade team, but did not feel ready to play varsity as a sophomore, so he didn’t play at all last school season. Blanche played on the U16 Eden Prairie summer club team that placed second in the state tournament at the premier or top level. Teammates who were on the Eagle varsity urged him to come out again. “I decided to see what happens,” said Blanche. “It was a surprise to me that I made varsity because I did not play last year. When I started scoring, I said ‘I could do this’ and it was fun. I don’t make goals by myself. We are a very good passing team.” Blanche works at forward along with some other players who learned the sport in other countries. Omar is from Kenya, junior Roman Derevyanko is from Russia and junior midfielder Medo Youssef is from Egypt.
in the third quarter for Eden Prairie’s final points. Larson led EP’s ground attack, rushing 12 times for 53 yards. McGhee added 45 yards on six rushes and Woodring had 42 yards on six carries. Shaeffer’s passing was a big plus. The junior connected on all four of his attempts for 142 yards. Although the game was a blowout, it didn’t lack drama. “The game got nasty in the second half,” Grant noted. “Edina was called for seven personal fouls.” Edina finished the season 5-5 overall and scored an emotional 38-35 win over Hopkins prior to taking on Eden Prairie. As the Eagles move forward to their game with Minnetonka, Grant said he expects a physical game. “We know that Minnetonka will be well coached,” he said. “[Coach] Dave Nelson has a great staff over there and they always come prepared.”

Grove Coin ... Ranked the Twin Cities Top Coin & Precious Metals Buyer by the Minneapolis Tribune
O L D C O I N S & PA P E R M O N E Y T O O ! EIGHT Things You MUST Know
..... before YOU sell !
1. All dealers do not pay the same price. Whether you are selling the Family Treasures or just some old, broken jewelry, it pays to CHECK and COMPARE. Just call and ask for our gram, pennyweight or ounce prices. 2. Grove Coin is rated the Twin Cities Top Coin & Gold Buyer by the Minneapolis Tribune’s independent survey ..... (Grove Coin payed 8% more than Wixon’s and 32% more than the Gold Guys at the Mall of America). 3. It is RISKY to sell in a Motel ... to someone who will not be here next week ! More often than not, “motel buyers” pay very low prices for gold & silver. 4. Knowledge is the key to accurate, competitive pricing. Grove Coin is a “Full-Service” dealer, well versed in all facets of precious metals, numismatic coins and paper money. 5. We guarantee your visit to Grove Coin will be a pleasant one. Our staff are all experienced numismatists and will assist you promptly with courtesy and respect ..... and your transaction will be strictly confidential.

As you are probably well aware, the metals markets have been quite volatile lately. Accordingly, we must adjust our buying rates frequently in order to remain competitive. We invite comparison shopping and will gladly provide phone quotes on all items which are bought and sold by weight.
6. Always sell to a dealer who can provide good Bank and Professional References. We are State Licenced and Insured.

A Tidbit of History
7. You can get more help on how to best sell your gold or coins by visiting our web site at ..... www.GROVECOIN.com
In about 1074 A.D., eight years after defeating Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, King William I of England (William the Conqueror) issued a silver penny, about the size of a dime, bearing his portrait with a star on either side. In due time, English pennies became known as “stoerlings” from which the modern English currency of Sterling and the tem for fine silver is derived. Some have suggested that the use of stars on the coinage of this period might have represented celestial activity such as the appearance of Haley’s Comet in March of 1066 A.D., the year of the Conquest.
8. At least one very “high-profile” local gold buyer has been know to play games with weights. A high quote means nothing if you don’t get full credit for EVERY gram or pennyweight of gold or silver.
