Watershed districts

EDEN PRAIRIE Community Guide 2017

Where two watersheds intersect The land in Eden Prairie is divided into two watershed districts, named for Nine Mile Creek and Riley Purgatory Bluff Creek. A watershed district is a local unit of government whose goal is to conserve natural resources through land use planning, flood control and other conservation projects. A watershed is all the land ar ea that drains to a specific water r esource, such as a lake or str eam. They range in size from a few square miles to entire continents. Nine Mile Creek Watershed District The Nine Mile Cr eek Watershed District was the first urban watershed district in Minnesota, formed in 1959. It encompasses about 50 squar e miles in surface ar ea around Nine Mile Cr eek. The district is located in Hennepin County and includes parts of Edina, Bloomington, Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, Hopkins and Richfield. Contrary to the name, the main stem of the cr eek is actually 15 miles long, and the south fork of the cr eek is 8.5 miles long. The cr eek got its name fr om early settlers in Minnesota who traveled west fr om Fort Snelling along Old Shakopee Road, a nine-mile trek. The Nine Mile Creek Watershed District is governed by

a board of managers appointed by the Hennepin County Commissioners, and managers serve three-year staggered terms. In September 2015, the district opened the Nine Mile Creek Discovery Point facility at 12800 Gerar d Drive, in Eden Prairie. The five-acre property serves to educate and inspire residents about local water and natural resources. Riley-Purgatory-Bluff Creek Watershed District The Riley-Pur gatory-Bluff Cr eek W atershed District was established in 1969. Originally known as the RileyPurgatory Creek Watershed District, it became the RileyPurgatory-Bluff Creek Watershed District in 1984. Its function is to protect and manage the water resources within the district, which is appr oximately 50 squar e miles in surface area and encompasses the land area tributary to Riley Cr eek, Purgatory Creek, and Bluf f Creek in Hennepin and Carver counties. The district includes portions of Bloomington, Chanhassen, Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Shor ewood. The main of fice is located at 14500 Martin Drive, Suite 1500, in Eden Prairie. Liquor

EDEN PRAIRIE Community Guide 2017

Park amenities aided by liquor sales Along with 300 other cities, Eden Prairie has had municipal liquor stores since the repeal of prohibition in 1933. Stocking and staffing three stores throughout the city, the city operates a pr ofitable business that pr ovides citizens with top-notch liquor stores. This practice not only allows for greater control over liquor being sold and consumed in the city, but also further diversifies the city’s revenue sources. Profits from the city’s liquor operations ar e transferred to the city’s Capital Impr ovement Plan fund. Some of this year ’s CIP projects included impr ovements to playground equipment, ice rink dasher boar ds and parking lots at several city parks, as well as street and trail maintenance throughout the community. Per changes to state law in 2017, Eden Prairie Liquor stores will be open on Sunday, starting as early as July 2. Operational hours for Sundays had yet to be announced when this guide printed. History

EDEN PRAIRIE Community Guide 2017

The storied history of Eden Prairie Though still idyllic, Eden Prairie once earned its namesake more literally. Some of the first settlers in the area staked their claims in the Minnesota River V alley, the southern portion of the city, giving the city its name. In the early 1850s, John McKenzie and others platted a village they called Hennepin. Other settlers, including Hiram Abbott, claimed a northern part of the prairie after a land purchase was made with Native Americans in 1851. By 1858, the Eden Prairie T ownship was established. The township, accor ding to the Eden Prairie Historical Society, was nearly 20,000 acr es, plenty of r oom for the 749 people who lived ther e in 1880. The land they shared was worth $266,303, accor ding to the land valuation at the time. The first schoolhouse, an 18-by-24-foot log house, was built in 1854, which was also the year of the earliest r eported religious service. The growth of the area began in the 1960s, after farmers began selling their land. It wasn’t until 1963 that the township officially became a village. Today, the Eden Prairie Historical Society has helped keep residents connected to Eden Prairie history, including historical sites such as the popular Rustica Cafe in the historic Smith-Douglas-More House and the recently-renovated Cummins-Phipps-Grill Homestead acr oss from the Flying Cloud Airport.

The Eden Prairie Veterans Memorial is another important site with br onze statutes and an Honor W all that commemorates 17 people fr om Eden Prairie killed in armed services, dating back to the Civil War. The Veterans Memorial Committee, separate fr om the Historical Society, took years to raise funds for the special memorial, which debuted in November 2009. To keep in touch with history , the Eden Prairie Historical Society hosts regular events. Summer and fall events: • Fall Harvest Celebration is held in October at the Riley Jacques Barn and Dorenkemper House. These event schedules may change, and the Historical Society will have new events and mor e information available as they come. For more information, visit edenprairiehistory.org.
