‘The chandelier! The chandelier!’
Owner John Kopas is proud of his spacious, customer-friendly showroom featuring “daylighting” for accurate color selection.
Why Would You Buy Flooring Anywhere Else When Abbey Carpet Has the Best:
John Kopas has worked 38 years in carpet and flooring with the philosophy “You make it right for the customer.” This belief was never tested so far as the day his installers were tapping in new tackboard in a customer’s living room. “They’d moved this lady’s grand piano into the adjacent dining room the day before, and were just hammering in the tackboard when crash! The ceiling lighting fixture came down right on that piano,” Kopas recalls. Even as the glass shards settled, Kopas felt he had to step up. “You really couldn’t say it was our fault, but we paid for the top of that piano to be refinished,” he says. “You can’t even tell now that anything happened to it. That’s just how I choose to do business.”

They’ve been spreading the word, as now a million-plus people who use the consumer reviews on Angie’s List also know Abbey is tops. The “Super Service Award” Angie’s List bestowed on Abbey shows it’s one of only 5 percent of companies rated nationwide that get top marks from customers. Longtime owner John Kopas and business partner Tom Link, who also boasts decades of experience, thank their customers for the kudos. “This isn’t anything we could have applied for or pursued,” Kopas notes. “This all came from our customers.” The Angie’s List rating follows one from Consumer’s Checkbook, which also compiles customer reviews. In the Checkbook list, the Mounds View Abbey Carpet posts a solid 100 percent satisfaction rate in “overall service” — compared to a metro-wide average rating of 53 percent. What difference does Abbey’s service in consulting expertise and installation make? “You can find the same carpet somewhere else, but installation is everything,” Kopas says. He’s backed up by Consumer’s Checkbook, which warns homeowners to check installers’ work for “wrinkles or ripples, gaps between wall and carpet edge, unusually conspicuous seams, irregular seams, inconsistent shaping of carpet on steps” as well as glue stains and damage to walls. Poorly-installed flooring can be even worse — and more expensive for another contractor to correct. Wood planks that shrink and gap, substandard underlayment, cracking ceramic and sloppy grout are just the beginning. “People think they’re getting a deal at bigbox stores, but they often regret having to live with the results,” Kopas says. His view is borne out by Consumer Checkbooks’ ratings of bigbox stores’ overall service, some of which dip down to 35 percent. And, though people may be able to find their carpet and flooring choice somewhere else besides Kopas’ store, it’s hard to imagine them doing so without a couple weeks and several tanks of gas. His 10,000-square-foot space showcases nearly 50 carpet brands, over 20 wood-flooring brands and myriad choices in tile, ceramic and stone floors. From cork to teak wood, plush shag to commercial carpet and marble to slate, you can find just what

PJW provides trusted auto service for more than 30 years Pat Whelan, owner of PJW Automotive in New Brighton, has been in the car repair industry long enough to see changes in customer habits. He opened PJW in February 1980 with his father and oldest brother at Old Highway 8 and Mound Street. Five years later, Whelan relocated the business two blocks away to its current location, 2087 Old Hwy N.W. Whelan said drivers are keeping vehicles longer than they did 25-30 years ago. In fact, he’s seen a drastic change over the past five years and he knows why. “People aren’t buying new cars because of the expense,” Whelan said. But, this change presents a problem. Overall, customers expect vehicle longevity without the required scheduled repairs. Whelan said customers need to know that car maintenance goes beyond having its oil changed every 3,000 miles or three months. Vehicles should have a full check-up every six months, Whelan said. PJW’s ASE master-certified technicians recently worked on a Ford Taurus that broke down in front of the auto center. They were able to drive it forward, but not in reverse. After further inspection, the technicians estimated the car’s rear brakes had not worked for at least six months. Following more repairs, the bill was estimated at $1,050. The owner approved the work but questioned why the bill was so high, even though it was $10 less than
the estimate. The Taurus owner, and other car owners, should plan for repairs if they will be driving their vehicles longer, Whelan said. “Nobody budgets money for car repair,” Whelan said. “It should happen, but it doesn’t happen. Many customers have unrealistic expectations of their vehicles. When they come in, some have huge repair bills to pay. They’re surprised, and they shouldn’t be.” Whelan expects drivers to take better care of their vehicles and likewise, he knows customers expect honesty and fairness from PJW. “We do what we say we’re going to do,” Whelan said. He understands car maintenance is expensive and will suggest putting off repairs that can wait a few months. “We know car repair is very expensive,” Whelan said. “We’re not hardened to the fact that this is an expensive thing to keep on the road.” Whelan said drivers can cut down on car expenses if they pay attention to oil changes and other repair needs. PJW keeps customer records for more than 10 years. “We get to know those customers,” Whelan said. To schedule an appointment, call 651-6366141 or go to pjwauto.com.
Seasoned trio of attorneys offers convenient northwest location After almost 30 years in Brooklyn Center, the lawyers at Henderson, Howard & Pawluk have spent the last 18 months meeting their clients at a new location: 900 Long Lake Road, Suite 330, New Brighton. The trio of lawyers, which includes Chad E. Henderson, Thomas R. Howard and Julie M. Pawluk, handles cases throughout the metropolitan area. They find that their office’s convenient location at Interstate 694 and Long Lake Road – along with ample on-site parking – provides a service to their clients. “Meetin at our location is more convenient than going downtown and more affordable,” said Attorney Julie Pawluk. “It’s easy for our clients to get to us, and it’s easy for us to get to the courthouses. We hope to build a bigger presence here.” Pawluk, Henderson and Howard each have more than 30 years of experience and have been in practice together since 1988. They offer a personal touch to people looking for help with wills and trusts, probate, real estate, elder law, family law, criminal law, juvenile law, corporate and business matters. different needs,” Pawluk said. Chad E. Henderson has been practicing law in the Twin Cities area since 1981. His practice areas include wills and trusts, probate, elder law and real estate. He formerly taught legal assistant classes at North Hennepin Community College and also lectures for senior groups, adult education classes and continuing legal education classes. Thomas R. MUCH has changed in medicine and the delivery of quality healthcare to individuals in the last 50 years, but one pioneering principle has not for the doctors and staff at the three Multicare Associates clinics in Blaine, Fridley and Roseville: Providing superior care, both preventive and treatment, wherein success is measured by satisfying their patients by optimizing their health. Many in medicine have begun to talk more about the principle or goal of ‘Patient Health’ and it being the metric by which providers and insurance companies should be judged. But, many say, it’s easier talked about than accomplished. And while it may have become both buzzword and bandwagon, in today’s often strange and confusing maze of insurance coverages and reimbursements, as well as the move by most doctors to large provider or hospital groups, optimizing patient health can be a difficult promise to deliver. Multicare appears to be doing a good job of it. They remain independent while putting patients first, and they’re adding doctors and others to care for them. There doesn’t appear to be any particular magic or technological advantage to how Multicare cares for its patients. Their inspiration and success derive from their embrace of the challenges and responsibilities of helping people achieve good health. Unlike some, they’re optimistic for the future of healthcare. Perhaps not least, because their founding principle of putting a patient’s needs above all others and optimizing their health seems to be gaining wider recognition and demand. The three Multicare Associates clinics are Blaine Medical Center, Fridley Medical Center and Roseville Medical Center.

Plumbing business serves metro area – and those in need Owner of Fridley-based Mr. Rooter continues legacy of giving back Mike Wickam of Plymouth quit a corporate career to pick up the Fridley-based Mr. Rooter Plumbing franchise. The business serves the entire metro area, and, inspired by a master plumber he worked with in Illinois, Wickam is making plans to especially serve those in need. Wickam, an Illinois native, earned his bachelor’s degree from Bethel University in St. Paul. “All my jobs in high school and college during summers were in the trades,” like plumbing and concrete work, he said. Johnny Bull of JLB Plumbing in Rockford, Ill. – the master plumber he worked for – wanted Wickam to become a plumber, too, but Wickam “wanted to go the white collar route,” he said. After graduating from Bethel in 1990, Wickam worked for large technology companies, including Verizon, AT&T and cable companies, working in sales, marketing and operations. For the next 20 years, the companies moved him around the country, taking him to places like Orlando, Fla., and San Diego. He earned his MBA degree while in California and moved back to the Twin Cities about eight years ago. Around 2010, looking for a change of pace, Wickam started his own company to continue his work – but independently – and for small businesses such as Mr. Rooter, which has been operat-
ing in the Twin Cities since about 2000. He later learned the owners of the Twin Cities Mr. Rooter were preparing to retire, and they suggested Wickam take over the business. “‘You seem to know about what makes a service business go,’” he recalled them telling him. “‘Why don’t you buy it?’ “It was a distressed business,” Wickam said. “It had come through the recession, but was a little wounded and really in need of some more sophisticated, modern marketing and sales training – those kinds of things,” Wickam said. Wickam became the owner of this Mr. Rooter franchise in March 2012. A reason he chose Mr. Rooter was also because of values; although they’re not a price leader in the business, they’re “the courteous plumber,” he said. “There’s a reason they call us Mr.” is another tagline, he said. His philosophy is very simple: “Getting the right people doing the right jobs in the right way.” If the employer cares about the employees, the employees will take good care of the customers, leading to a successful business. “We’ve been at it for a year, and we have already doubled the monthly sales volume. For a 12-year-old business, that’s pretty good,” he said. His business model also emphasizes practicing consistent and
Mike Wickam - Owner of Mr. Rooter in Fridley good processes as well as understanding customers and the solutions they need. Extending a helping hand But Wickam’s plans go beyond reviving the business. He also wants to help those who need services that they can’t afford. “Sometimes you come across someone who’s down on their luck or on a fixed income,” he said. “People who rode through the economy and kept their houses, sometimes they’re one big repair away from losing it.” When Wickam was working for Bull in Illinois, he recalled, the plumber was on a job to replace a broken water heater for seniors who couldn’t afford it. “He put it in for free – that really stuck for me,” Wickam said. While his Mr. Rooter franchise will do commercial work – like in apartment buildings and restaurants – he also wants to work with his suppliers and plumbers who will donate time, parts and labor to provide for others. “What I want to do here is to
have a separate division that works with churches and community organizations (to find) seniors, single moms and people who are trying to stay in their houses and do free plumbing work for those people,” he said. Wickam said if a business is not giving back to the community, it is missing out. “On the community aspect of it – other than it’s good business – there’s no better feeling in the world than to help someone when they didn’t expect to get helped out,” Wickam said. “To whom much is given, much is expected.” Wickam said he already has a few churches signed up to help him find those who are most in need of support. He began the service program last December and calls it Johnny’s Love, after the master plumber in Illinois. Bull passed away last fall. Wickam attended and spoke at the funeral. “(This program is) a great way to honor his memory and carry out what I learned from him.”

Crystal Care Center helps residents enjoy life every day Volunteers of America-Crystal Care Center share the view that entering a nursing home, for any length of time should be uplifting. “All of our staff encourages our residents to enjoy every day and promote the motto, “LIFE, BE IN IT,” said Keri Manson, pointing to the “therapeutic recreation program which can be challenging and energizing.” Manson noted another creative current example of how the skilled nursing facility at 3245 Vera Cruz Ave. N., Crystal encourages residents to have fun staying active. “Crystal Care Center has joined in the spring training fun with taking the lead from Major League baseball,” said Manson. “Our nursing assistants have become personal trainers and our nurses and managers have become general managers and cheer leaders. Our activities involve baseball themes such as playing with a bat and balloon ball and exercise programs include Wii baseball games.” Planned for mid April is an opening day baseball game and picnic. “Putting a ‘spring’ into our step
is what we try to do daily,” notes Manson. “We say if we didn’t use it, we lose it.” Crystal Care Center opened in 1971 and currently has 188 employees. “If you come to us our goal is to get you better to go home,” adds Manson. “But if you are unable, we want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We want for you to enjoy the things you did at home, here.” Crystal Care Center looks for other ways to serve seniors in Crystal and surrounding communities with rehabilitation, memory care, continuing care, veteran contracts and hospice care. The operating company of Volunteers of America is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit providers of quality, affordable housing for seniors. It is a major provider of professional long-term care including assisted living, home health care and nursing home care. It has been in existence for 107 years. The living facility has a variety of specialty units designed to meet the
needs of the residents who make the facility their home, if even for a short time. Crystal Care Center offers shortterm rehabilitation for those people needing therapy or extra nursing care following a hospital stay. A secured memory unit is designed to meet the needs of those suffering Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. A continuing care unit is for those who may require a longer stay or are unable to return home. There is respite care to help families who are caring for a loved one and need a temporary placement for a week or two. Accommodations involve 138 beds, including private and semi-private rooms. Therapies offered are physical, occupational and speech. Services provided include dietary, housekeeping, nursing and mental health. Payment types include Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. Volunteers of America was founded in 1896 by social reformers Ballington and Maud Booth. They envisioned a movement dedicated to “reaching and

uplifting” the American people. On behalf of the organization, the Booths pledged to “go wherever we are needed, and do whatever comes to hand.” That declaration continues to guide Volunteers of America’s outreach efforts today. Planning for the next 100 years, Volunteers of America wants to continue to prove that “there are no limits to caring, while also establishing itself as a leading provider of aging services to the support nation’s rapidly-growing senior population. Our nation is on the cusp of one of the most dramatic demographic shifts in its history as a projected 71.5 million people will be age 65 or older by the year 2030. The demands this will place on our country’s current system of providing elder care are daunting. Volunteers of America recognizes that aging is for many a complex and fearful unknown. “We want to help older Americans celebrate the joy of living by creating a sustained, trusted relationship with support systems that allow them to age at home wherever that may be.”

Finally… You Can Order Windows Without a Pushy Salesman By Rachel M. Anderson If you know your home is in need of new windows but have been putting it off, what’s your excuse? Maybe you’re afraid of making the call because you fear telemarketers will hound you after giving out your number. Or you dread the thought of that appointment with a salesperson who is most definitely going to try and sell you some upgrade you don’t need. Well, what if you could buy the quality windows you want at an affordable price, and without having to deal with a pushy sales person? Now it’s possible thanks to National Window Company, Inc., which has been serving St. Anthony and surrounding communities since 2009. Earlier this year the company launched a tool on its website, www.nationalwindowcompany.com, that allows customers to get a quote for replacement windows in three easy steps. Step #1 is to follow the instructions on the website to measure your existing windows. National Window Company will send an installer to verify your measurements. Step #2 is to use the Pricing Tool to price out the
product you want and Step #3 is to schedule the install. The price you are quoted online will include all the features you selected, as well as the cost of installation and you get free exterior aluminum wrap for each window you order. Available features include the ability to select an interior and exterior color, adding side and/or center grids and selecting the glass type. National Window Company, Inc., offers a lifetime warranty on the frame, the glass and all the parts. When it comes to glass types, the standard type offered is EcoSure. EcoSure is double strength, double pane insulated glass which has a Low E coating and Argon gas. It also has a Duralite Spacer with the latest in gas mixture and filling which is OptiGas with ThermalCert. This combination gives EcoSure the best energy value today. Available interior colors include white, tan and your choice of four woodgrains – light oak, cavalier oak, dark oak and cherry. There are 12 exterior colors available, including white, tan, clay, brown, brandywine and evergreen.
“The reason we developed this tool is because people are tired of the highpressure door-to-door salespeople, the telemarketers and the flyers. Now they don’t have to feel forced into making a decision on the spot. They can just go online from the comfort of their homes, see the windows that they like and get a price right there without having to go through three hours of someone demonstrating a window and trying to shove it down their throat,” says Howie Garren, who is the regional director for National Window Company. Garren has been working in the industry since the 1980s and says his window company is the first to offer a Web-based tool like this one. Garren adds that from the time you place the order until the project is complete typically takes anywhere from three to four weeks. If you decide to place an order online, you will receive an email immediately confirming the order, and within 72 hours will receive a phone call from the company’s installation manager to set up a time to measure your windows. “We feel this step is critical and it’s part of the package. We
measure for perfection before placing the actual order for windows,” says Garren. On National Window Company’s website, it is possible to price out all different sizes of double hung, two-lite sliders, three-lite sliders, picture windows, single casement and double casement windows. Bow and bay windows and patio doors are also available, but you will need to call the company to get a price quote for them. Garren says prices for the typical window range from $435 to $535 installed. “Our prices are a lot lower than other companies charge because there are no commissions or door-to-door appointment setters to pay. We charge nearly half of what a commissioned salesperson would charge, while the integrity of our product is second to none!” says Garren. National Window Company Inc. has been in business since 2009 and has earned the Better Business Bureau’s Accreditation.
