Osseo 2011 Lion of the Year is Allan Hartkopf

ALLAN “BUCKY” HARTKOPF “We Serve” is the International Lions Club motto and Lion Allan “Bucky” Hartkopf is the epitome of this motto. Bucky has been a member of the Osseo Lions Club since 1962, with a 50 percent attendance. Bucky was the club president in 1992. He served as club secretary for seven different years. He has occupied all offices in the club except one. He was the District Governor from 1999 to 2000, responsible for the success of 44 Lions Clubs in Hennepin County and has received two Melvin Jones Awards, a Helen Keller Award,

Presidential Award for Leadership, the Hearing Foundation Fellowship and the Leadership Medal. Bucky has started 15 new Lions Clubs including Champlin, Golden Valley, Minneapolis Down Town, Camden, Minneapolis North, Richfield and Golden Valley Courage Center. Bucky is responsible for bringing over 90 new members to Lions Clubs through the region. Bucky has organized food collection for the past six years from St. Vincent’s School, Osseo Elementary, Elm Creek, Osseo Junior High and Fernbrook for the CROSS Food Shelf. Over 100,000 pounds of food has been delivered to CROSS under Bucky’s leadership. One of Bucky’s favorite projects involved purchasing 2,500 dictionaries and personally distributing them to the third graders at the St. Vincent’s, Elm Creek, Fernbrook and Osseo elementary schools for the last six years. This is the first Webster Dictionary these students receive and includes an atlas, the constitution, list of presidents and a host of other reference information. Bucky was a 20-year member of the Osseo Fire Department and retired in 1985. Additionally, Bucky served on the Osseo City Council for four years beginning in 1967 during the time the new City Hall was constructed. He once again felt the calling and was elected to the Osseo City Council in 2011. Bucky graduated from St. Cloud State University with a bachelors degree in education in 1961. He became part owner in a number of nursing homes, went on to become a salesman in the surrounding seven state area. The retired from that career, renewed his teaching certificate and taught school for the next 19 years in District 279. The Osseo Lions Club is proud to select our long-time member Bucky Hartkopf the 2011 Lion of the Year.

2011 Osseo Lions Club President is Mark Sundman Mark Sundman is this year’s Osseo Lions Club President. He joined the Osseo Lions Club nine years ago. He has held the positions of: club secretary, highway cleanup crew, was on the Osseo Lions board, tail twister, convention chairman, first vice president and second in command. Sundman was also last year’s Lion of the Year. When asked what it means to be this year’s Osseo Lions Club President, he said it is more work, but that he owns his own company. He added that he can manage and lead people. He will also oversee meetings and donation requests and things like that. Sundman added everyone helps chip in with the duties in the Osseo Lions Club. He plans to find out MARK SUNDMAN ways to raise more donations. He said the Osseo Lions Club ways of raising funds is down. “If we made more, we could give more,” Sundman said. “We have a lot of requests for donations, but we can’t really do many of them right now.” He has been in business for 31 years in area. He is the owner of Sundman Paving & Sealcoating, which is located just 7 miles west of Osseo. He also owns Ultra Supply Dumpsters and he runs a vehicle buying service and is a distributor of A.B.U. Trailers. Sundman said guys and gals who are members of the Osseo Lions were also customers of his. One of those customers asked him to become a Lion. He is a member of the Christian motorcycle association and Salvation Army in Brooklyn Park. He plays a cornet in the Salvation Army Band there. He’s been known to play that same cornet when the Lions are ringing bells in front of Fleet Farm in the dead of winter to raise money for that same organization. His volunteer work with the Salvation Army has given him the opportunity to help build a church in the Caribbean Island of St. Maarten. He also helps with the building projects at his own local church. His life-long involvement with the Salvation Army provided him the opportunity to march in the Salvation Army Band in the Rose Bowl Parade in 2002. His favorite mode of transportation is his Harley Davidson motorcycle and he is active in the Christian Motorcycle Association. He enjoys the time he can spend on the Harley and he has taken a number of bike trips around the state and nation. Sundman has been married to his wife Lori for 15 years and they have five daughters. They make their home in Rogers.

Garith joined the Osseo Lions Club over 11 years ago because he’s always believed in giving back to his community. Garith has been instrumental in serving at all Osseo Lions functions in addition to transporting the club trailer to the Lions Roar, St. Vincent’s Harvest Festival and to the new Oktoberfest Celebration in Osseo. He positions the trailer in exactly the spot where it is needed at each one of the specific celebrations. He is also responsible for maintenance of the trailer and storage of the contents from event to event. GARITH ANDERSON Garith Anderson Trucking was started in Osseo in 1963 and in 1996 it was moved to a new facility in Rogers where Garith continues to operate a very successful operation. For 15 years, Garith has also provided shipping, handling and storage for Camp Courage and Camp Friendship building and maintenance supplies such as concrete block, flooring and roof trusses. He transports these items from the manufacturer to storage and then to the building site when the camps are ready to use them at no cost to the non-profit organizations. These camps provide seasonal camping experiences to children experiencing physical and mental difficulties. Camp Courage and Camp Friendship also provide training opportunities for students entering the medical field. On occasion Garith has stored these supplies in excess of two years. Garith grew up in Duluth and after graduating from high school in 1961 he joined the Navy Construction Battalion and was shipped to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After two years in Cuba he was reassigned to Antarctica. He went from a temperature of 115 degrees above to 72 degrees below zero in one day. After his Navy career, Garith joined his father in his trucking firm, which he later took over. Garith’s wife Sharon also assists the Osseo Lions Club. Every year for the past six years Sharon assists in counting the funds during the Lions Roar. She has spent long hours counting the money to ensure deposits match the funds and accounts all match up at the conclusion of the event. The Osseo Lions are always grateful for her support. The Osseo Lions Club is proud to have Garith Anderson a long-standing member of our organization and this year’s Lions Roar Grand Marshal.
