Leading the way is Kate Maguire Superintendent is this year’s Grand Marshal BY DAWN FEDDERSEN-POINDEXTER sunpressnews@ecm-inc.com Osseo Area Schools Superintendent Kate Maguire has been named the Grand Marshal of the Pierre Bottineau Parade. The parade is the kick-off event for Maple Grove Days. Maguire has been a long-standing member of the Maple Grove community and has been working for the Featured this year as the school district for 27 Maple Grove Days Pierre years, starting as a Bottineau Parade Grand young teacher. She has Marshal is Kate Maguire. been Superintendent She is the superintendent for for the last two years. the Osseo Area School “I was excited when District. they asked me,” Maguire said. “I told them I was happy to help in any way I could.” Deb Syhre, President of the Maple Grove Community Organization, which organizes the event, knew that Maguire was just the sort of person she was looking for to be the Grand Marshal. She explained, “In selecting the Grand Marshal, we try to look at someone that plays a role in the community. We really just want someone who’s taken the time out of their lives to try and make a difference. It doesn’t matter if it’s on a very big scale or a smaller scale. We try to highlight who they are as well as what they do and honor the impact they’ve had on our community.” Past Grand Marshals have included community members involved in the military, the Maple Grove Park Board, and the Red Cross. Riding in the parade and waving at the crowd will be a surreal experience for the mother who remembers taking her children to watch the horses, marching bands and emergency vehicles roll by along the parade route. Syhre, who has been helping organize the event-

for 11 years, says every Grand Marshal has that moment of doubt before their car rolls out in front of the crowd. “When their car’s about to go they think, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this’,” she said. “They get in there and go down the parade route and that first wave is kind of tentative. But then they get going and hear people holler their name and wow, they think, ‘We really, truly are a community here and I’m a part of this. These are my people.’” Maguire is confident that she’ll see many friendly faces in the crowd. She said, “I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of people I know. I’ve been in the school district for 27 years. I raised my family here. I’ve gotten to know a lot of people in the community: staff, faculty, families of students, local officials. Folks really look forward to Maple Grove Days.” The Pierre Bottineau parade will be held Thursday, July 12, from 6:10 to 9 p.m. The parade route will travel west on 89th Avenue from Zachary Lane to Elm Creek Boulevard.

Maple Grove Days offers free shuttle bus service Saturday With the growth of Maple Grove Days, limited parking, and the variety of event locations it makes sense to take advantage of the shuttle bus. There are four stops for people’s convenience: • Maple Grove Transit Station • Main Street/Arbor Lake Parkway, • Maple Grove Community Center • Main Street/Lakeview Drive. The parking is free at the Transit Station and the shuttle bus is also free. Shuttles run continuously throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. And it’s the perfect place to park for the fireworks Saturday night.

Pierre Bottineau Parade kicks off Maple Grove Days festivities It’s just days away from the Pierre Bottineau Parade, an evening of fun for the entire family. Normally over 9,000 viewers line up along 89th Avenue to watch the parade. The parade mascot Pierre Bottineau is portrayed by Kurt Palmer and joins with visiting royalty, beautiful floats, school marching bands, youth groups, church groups, school organizations, community organization, businesses, police and fire vehicles, animals and musical groups for a full line up of entertainment. Back by popular demand this year the T-6 Thunder flyover. Two of the T-6 planes from the Thunder group will fly over the parade route beginning at 6:10 p.m. Maple Grove Days organizers are excited to have them provide a dramatic start to the parade. The parade committee reviews well over a hundred applications each year and tries to provide a well-balanced parade that everyone will enjoy. As part of the line up, there will be 11 royalty units and five high school bands that include Maple Grove, Osseo, St. Cloud All City Band, 728 Cadets and Buffalo High School bands. There will be a judged band competition awarding first, second and third place trophies at a ceremony following the last band’s parade finish. A sportsmanship award will also be given to one band in memory of Maple Grove band member Nicholas Turcotte. Each entry is encouraged to think of entertainment value and creativity in the planning of their parade units, as they are judged in a competition of two categories, over $2,000 and under $2,000, with cash awards going to first, second and third place winners. The parade committee has tried to award the Grand Marshal honor to a person or organization that has contributed to the improvement of life. This year the committee has the honor of selecting Kate Maguire. Maguire is proud to represent School District 279, all of the staff supporting the district and each of the students and their families. Each year volunteers, police officers and fire department personnel monitor the parade route. They are all trained to look for potential dangers along the route.

The Marching Crimson will again take part in the Pierre Bottineau Parade, which begins at 6:10 p.m. Thursday, July 12. (Photo by Alicia Miller) “Our number one concern is to keep everyone safe,” stated Becky Smith, parade committee. “We ask cooperation from all parents. We understand how tempting it is for children to run out after candy but all units have been instructed to walk to the curb line and hand out the candy.” It is very important to keep children behind the curb for their safety as well as the safety of the participants that utilize all the street space for performances. Marching bands are being judged, competing for points, so they must stay in formation. It is very important that viewers allow them room. Political units will be leading off the parade at 6:10 p.m. with the remainder of the parade following at 6:30 p.m. The parade route will be the same as previous years. It will run from Zachary Lane to Elm Creek Boulevard along 89th Avenue, except for political units that will begin at Forestview. So no matter what a favorite part of the parade is, people are sure to find the Pierre Bottineau Parade fun for the whole family. The parade committee wants to thank you in advance for keeping the streets and neighborhoods clean by picking up the trash and disposing of it in trash receptacles provided by Waste Management, when leaving.

Children’s fun happening all day at Maple Grove Days

Maple Grove Days has plenty of activities for kids. (Photo by Alicia MIller) Are parents looking to spend some fun summer experiences with their children? Well look no further than Maple Grove Days. It will have a full line up of events to share individually with a child or as a family, July 12 to 15. The fun starts Thursday, July 12, at the Pierre Bottineau Parade. With over 100 entries in the parade, people will see creative units with lots of music, entertainment and, of course, free candy. People won’t want to miss this community tradition. Please remember to keep children safe by not having them run out into the street for the candy. Participants have been instructed to hand candy to parade watchers. The summer fun continues Friday, July 13, with more kid-friendly events. The Junior Golf Tournament at French Lake Golf Course, starts a day of competition for the teens. Family time can be shared at “Cool Ray Skate” in the ice arena at the Maple Grove Community Center or Alley Jamz Bowling at Sundance. There is competition for those darling baby racers in the Diaper Derby. Over 60 babies last year provided pure fun and entertainment for the adults. The Derby will be on the lawn at the Town Green. Next in the line-up of entertainment and competition is the Children’s Parade. This is truly amazing as they dazzle viewers with decorated bikes, trikes, wagons and entertaining costumes. No preregistration is required. Just bring the kids, parents, family and friends to cheer as kids stroll along the paths around the Town Green.

Following the Children’s Parade, pull up the lawn chairs to watch the silly antics of Tricia and the Toonies. As the sun sets the movie screen goes up for a great animated movie. Start the day early Saturday, July 14, with some exercise by running or walking in the Kids Fun Run on the trail around North Arbor Lake, across from the Maple Grove Government Center. Brush up on the fishing skills at the fishing pier on Weaver Lake while the members of the Weaver Lake Conservation Association host a Fishing Clinic. Poles and bait are provided. The rest of the day has great children’s entertainment beginning in the morning with a musical performance from the “Splatter Sisters.” In the afternoon check out the amazing tricks performed at the “Rich Weiber’s Bicycle Stunt Show. There is a full line of local youth talent performed at the Town Green with karate demonstrations, singing, and dancing. Who knows you might even see a friend performing. Stop by and enjoy the Big Truck Show and see tires bigger than kids are. Don’t forget to check out the amazing cars on display at the Classic Car Show on the Main Street. There are lots of great giveaways for children in the Business Expo, too. Just down the hall there’s storytime and craft projects in the Kid’s Room or fun in the updated Maple Maze. There’s plenty of fun as you make a Model Car, dig through the sand for coins in the Coin Hunt, play Bingo, test the skills at Miniature Golf and the Obstacle Course or build a family boat for the Keep a Boat a Float contest. There are games to play, like football toss, pop ring toss, batting cages and lots more. Are you an animal lover? Well don’t miss the petting zoo or giddy-up for a pony ride. It’s always fun to bounce around on one of the great inflatable rides, too. Remember to bring the socks. Wander over to the Art Fair on Saturday or Sunday and enjoy the hands on experience at the Maple Grove Art Center making Art on a Stick. Lots of good food awaits kids all day long and they will want to stay into the evening for the spectacular fireworks display.

Our garden story originated in 2007. This property features a Monet-like pond view of multiple gardens. The gardens are highlighted with such features as a large Italian fountain, Victorian gazebo with stained glass, captivating garden sculptures and three seasons of colorful, sunny and shady annuals and perennials. Multi-colored Adirondacks complement the vast colorful flower displays. DIRECTIONS: Take 94 West to Weaver Lake Rd. take a left on Weaver Lk Rd to West Fish Lake Rd. Take left to 79th Pl N. Take left and immediate right onto Kingsview Lane North to top of hill.

2

Susan and Ernie Zigerlig 13934 62nd Avenue N

Our garden story: When we moved into our new house and watched the barren lawn for weeks, we decided it needed some shade and evergreen trees for privacy. Our friends quickly offered extra plants and lilac bushes and our backyard turned into a colorful flower and vegetable garden. The hard work soon turned into a “hobby”! Today, we enjoy relaxing days on our patio and listening to the gurgling water from the pond and the songs from many different birds!! DIRECTIONS: From 494, exit Bass Lake Road West. Turn left onto 63rd Ave at the first set of lights. Take the first left onto Yucca Lane, which wraps around and becomes 62nd Ave. We are just past Chesshire Lane.

4

Doug and Lori Ruckle 15079 67th Place N

Karen and Jack Carter 13889 62nd Avenue N

Our garden story: A trunk load of perennial cuttings from a friend 15 years ago was the start of gardens which now surround our cottage and extend into a secluded oasis in the woods. The steep, barren hillside along the wood’s edge was transformed 20 feet at a time over the last five years and now bursts with hundreds of daisies, lilies, ground covers, ferns and moss. Sculptures, knick-knacks, birdhouses and birdbaths adorn the landscape. You might even see a Smurf Village and Fairy Houses.

Our garden story: It all started with a free truckload of boulders and the project continued for the next 4 years. Our front yard has an island with plants and tall River Birch tree with a boulder engraved with our family name. At night, the entire yard is radiant with lights. In the backyard, you will find a paver sidewalk with fire pit and a freestanding wall that will lead you to a freestanding deck and hot tub. The area is surrounded with two ponds with two waterfalls and many tropical plants and wooded areas to view. Off to the side is our 4-season porch where we can view the wildlife all year long. DIRECTIONS: From 494, go west 1.3 miles on Bass Lake Rd. to Lanewood Ln. Turn left or south (this is across Fish Lake Park entrance). Lanewood Ln N road will “T.” Go right (west) on 67th Place N. This is a cul-de-sac street.

DIRECTIONS: From 494, exit Bass Lake Road West. Turn left onto 63rd Ave at the first set of lights. Take the first left onto Yucca Lane, which wraps around and becomes 62nd Ave. We are about the tenth house on the left (blue with brick front on a hill).

5

Paul and Faye Goodwin 11243 Pheasant Lane

Our garden story: We’ve spent the past eight years transforming a natural wooded setting, situated on a pond, into a tranquil garden. As you stroll through the yard on our moss-filled stepping stone paths, you will enjoy a variety of shade-loving plants on display in the tiered rock gardens. You will also find a bit of nostalgia with our eclectic garden accents. Though located in a suburban setting, the addition of a campfire pit and a bubbling rock help us escape into nature. DIRECTIONS: 94/694 to Hemlock Lane exit, then left to 73rd Avenue. Travel east on 73rd Avenue to Pheasant Lane, turn right. Follow to 11243 Pheasant Lane.

Want Better Grades? Train the Brain and Improve Your Ability to Learn. Get to the root cause of your child’s academic struggles—their ability to focus, think and learn. Unlike tutoring that only re-teaches subject matter, our proven program strengthens the key parts of the brain that students need to learn and read better. The results are amazing.

LOCAL SUCCESS Ashley had the dedication ation and determination to do well in school. But despite the long nights of studying and homework, extra hours at school, and the help of a tutor, her grades suffered. Through h a program of brain training at LearningRx, Ashley improved her concentration, problem solving skills, memory, reading and math. Which means she’s trimmed her homework time, is earning better grades, and has time for other things—like track, church, and being an ambassador for our community!

Maple Grove Days festival celebration “The Best” certainly sums up what is in store for people and their families at Maple Grove Days this weekend. So smooth on some sunscreen, wear the best walking shoes find the stroller and lawn chair and come out for a weekend of fun- filled events celebrating the city of Maple Grove, Thursday to Sunday, July 12 to 15. The Maple Grove Community Organization (MGCO) is the driving force behind this summer festival and with the help of the city of Maple Grove was started in the 1988 with a proposal from then Commissioner, John Garritsen. It all started with a simple parade in Grove Square and has grown to a four-day festival. Originally, Maple Grove Days was named “Pierre Bottineau Days” according MG Historical Society representative. The namesake, Pierre Bottineau, was an infamous fur-trader born in 1817 in North Dakota. The Maple Grove Days parade continues to be appropriately named the “Pierre Bottineau Parade” and the parade namesake will be portrayed by Kurt Palmer. Political units and a plane flyover will start off the parade at 6:10 p.m. again this year followed by the remaining parade units at 6:30 p.m. “We try to add something new each year to Maple Grove Days and look for ways to improve events from previous years,” said Deb Syhre, president of MGCO Look for the all new Pickleball Tournament and Volleyball Tournament.

And of course the many old and favorite events from past years like Corn Hole Tournament, Capture the Flag game, Alley Jamz Bowling, and the Friday night outdoor movie under the stars. The Seventh Annual Tennis Tournament will take place this year with four days of competition at the MGJH and MGSH tennis courts. Youth can participate in the Junior Golf Tournament at French Lake Golf Course, and 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Each year the Medallion Hunt generates lots of excitement as the MG parks are searched high and low for the Bronze Maple Leaf. The finder wins a $500 prize from the Lookout Bar and Grill. Racing events abound with the Rice Lake Classic, Kids Fun Run and 40 Winks Foundation Bed Race by the MG Rotary. The Maple Grove Ambassador Scholarship Program will crown three new ambassadors at coronation Friday night at MGSH.
