EVENT INFORMATION

ACOEP’s Spring Seminar CME and Course Objectives Course Objectives 1. Increase clinical knowledge of emergency medicine through an innovative mixture of lectures and hands-on workshops on practical and administrative processes.

2. Develop and improve basic skills utilized by emergency medicine practitioners in emergency medicine settings.

3. Create an environment in which new physicians will develop presentation and research skills through a series of competitive venues.

4. Review the most updated literature on various topics of emergency medicine.

ACOEP’s Spring Seminar Chair Christopher Colbert, DO, FACOEP This educational activity is sponsored by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP). ACOEP is an approved provider of AOA Category 1A CME credit. ACOEP has requested that the AOA Council on Continuing Medical Education approve this program for 22.5 AOA Category 1A CME credits for didactic sessions, and up to 27 credits through additional opportunities. Approval is currently pending.

In total, over 37.5 hours of Category 1A CME is available at ACOEP’s Spring Seminar.

AAEM Accreditation Statement This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) and the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP). The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation Statement The American Academy of Emergency Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 22.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Upon completion of this evaluation you will be directed to your attestation form. ACOEP will forward your hours to the AOA. Physicians earning AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ should maintain a record of their credits upon receipt of their course certificate, to use towards their PRA.

More Chances to Learn Keynote Speakers Judith Tintinalli, MD, and Peter Rosen, MD take center stage, each delivering an hour long didactic lecture. These speakers are giants in the field and this is an excellent opportunity for attendees to learn from their expertise.

Keynote Panel Luncheon is a great opportunity to listen to Dr. Rosen and Dr. Tintinalli as they join an in-depth discussion with ACOEP’s Nilesh Patel, DO, FACOEP, FAAEM. Learn from their experience, insight, and give-and-take in a roundtable discussion. Space is limited, and preregistration is required.

Faculty Bios Michael Allswede, DO is the Director of the Strategic Medical Intelligence (SMI) initiative and serves as a lecturer at the Marshall Institute’s Preventing Terrorism Security Studies course. Dr. Allswede is also a subject matter expert for the INTERPOL bioterrorism unit and a co-author of INTERPOL Bioterrorism Incident Pre-Planning and Response Guide. Dr. Allswede is a co-author of the first accredited disaster medicine fellowship curriculum designed for physicians. Dr. Allswede does not have any relevant financial relationships to disclose.

amran Aslam, MD received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical (UTSW) Center K at Dallas, Texas. His internal medicine residency was also completed at UTSW/Parkland Memorial Hospital and the Veterans Health Administration. After this he spent two years volunteering in international disasters aid, and working in in the Emergency Department at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas Texas. Dr. Aslam then completed his cardiology fellowship at University of Florida, and trained in Cardiac Electrophysiology under Dr. Eric Prystowsky, who is one of the world’s pioneers in the subspecialty. Dr. Aslam created and established the current Complex Arrhythmia/Device program at Swedish Covenant Hospital (SCH), Chicago Illinois where he also steers the Medical Anticoagulation Clinic. He has remained active in academic endeavors in the form of being a local PI for an international cardiac resynchronization device trial, and proof of concept pilot study regarding personalized anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation. He completed residencies in Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine and is board certified in both. He established the first emergency medicine residency at Doctors Hospital in 1991, and has been an attending faculty member at Doctors Hospital for the past 26 years. Dr. Bell was appointed Assistant Dean for the Ohio University CORE system in 1995. He has since completed a two-year Fellowship in Academic Administration at OUHCOM, a Health Policy Fellowship through the AOA/OUHCOM, and in 2002 was promoted to Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine. Since 2002, Dr. Bell has served as Chair of the Ohio Osteopathic Association’s Health Policy Committee. More recently, he was designated Master Clinical Faculty by Ohio University, and in 2012 awarded the Bruce Horton Lifetime Achievement Award by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians where he is also a past president. Dr. Bell is a stakeholder and writes board questions and cases for NBOME and AOBEM. il Binenbaum, MD, MSCE is an attending surgeon at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and G Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

He lectures frequently on Pediatric Ophthalmology to Emergency Medicine Physicians, as well as to students and trainees from multiple other disciplines. He is an active clinical researcher with support from the National Institutes of Health. His research focuses upon clinical effectiveness in pediatric ophthalmology and eye disorders in infancy, such as retinopathy of prematurity and ocular manifestations of abusive head trauma. Bobrow, MD, FACEP, FAHA is Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona B College of Medicine and Medical Director for the Arizona Department of Health Services Bureau of EMS and Trauma System. He also serves as associate director of the University’s Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center. Dr. Bobrow’s focus is on implementing and measuring systems of care for time-sensitive emergency medical conditions including out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, STEMI, and traumatic brain injury. eith Bradley, MD began his undergraduate studies at The United States Military Academy, and K completed a B.S. degree at the University of Notre Dame. Following medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine, he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (Drexel). Dr. Bradley served as an Attending Physician at Norwalk Hospital (CT), Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center (South Bronx) and Bridgeport Hospital (CT). He has been on the emergency medicine faculty at New York Medical College and the Yale University School of Medicine.

He was the Health Professions Adviser at Fairfield University. He founded and directed the Research Associates Programs at Lincoln, Bridgeport Hospital and now at St. Vincent’s Medical Center (CT). He is the CEO/CMO of the National Alliance of Research Associates Programs (NARAP).

Kenneth H. Butler, DO, FACEP, FAAEM is the Associate Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the University of Maryland where he also holds the academic title of Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Butler is an internationally recognized expert in airway management and a faculty member of the Practice Emergency Airway Management Seminar. nne Klimke, MD, MS, FACEP began her EMS career in her home state of Kentucky in 1998, where she A worked in rural agencies during her summers home from college at Washington University in St. Louis.

Her EMS experience framed her approach to medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Upon her graduation in 2005, she moved to Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia to begin her residency in emergency medicine. During her residency she began working towards her Master’s in Disaster Medicine and Management at Philadelphia University. She completed both her Master’s degree and her EMS fellowship at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia in 2010, and has been core faculty at Einstein Medical Center since then. She also holds a faculty appointment through the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and served as adjunct faculty at Philadelphia University from 2010-2015 as part of their graduate program in Disaster Medicine and Management. Additionally, she serves as a medical team manager for FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue Team, Pennsylvania Task Force 1, based in Philadelphia. She has deployed with the task force for Hurricane Earl, Superstorm Sandy, and the 2015 Papal Visit to Philadelphia. Although she prefers to respond to disasters outside of the hospital, she has also dealt with mass casualty incidents while working in the emergency department, most notably the Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia in 2015. rian Moore, MD, FAAP is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency B physician at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. His first faculty position was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he held numerous positions including pediatric medical director for Mayo Medical Transport. In 2015, she was appointed as an adjunct clinical instructor in the Department of Family Medicine at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Annually, Jill provides a seminar to the resident physicians explaining the process of medical research from hypothesis development to manuscript submission. Jill has multiple research articles published in predominately preclinical academic journals. In May 2015, Jill was first author on a manuscript entitled, “Minimal Impact of an Electronic Records System” published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, her first clinical-focused paper.

Judith Tintinalli, MD is a world-renown professor and writer. She is the founding chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hilland is the editor-in-chief of the world’s largest selling emergency medicine textbook, Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine in its 8th (2015) McGraw Hill edition. The 7th edition received the ‘Best Surgical Book of 2011’ from the British Medical Association, and is Editor in Chief of Access Emergency Medicine, the McGraw Hill digital library for emergency medicine. She was a Board Member, and Deputy Editor of the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

She was appointed Editor in Chief of Emergency Physicians Monthly in July 2013. In May, 2013, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of North Carolina Academy of Educators.

Dr. Tintinalli was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, and is also Adjunct Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the School of Public Health, and guest lecturer in Medical Journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Tintinalli receives royalties from McGraw-Hill Publications.

Jill Uberti, DO is the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director at St. Joseph Health Centers in Warren, Ohio and chair of the ACOEP’s Residency In-service Exam (RISE) Committee. Dr. Uberti was recently name the DME at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.

ictor J. Scali, DO, FACOEP-D completed an internship at Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center then V served three years as Medical Officer and Commander for the 6943rd ESS at National Security Agency, receiving the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. Dr. Scali is an Associate Professor at PCOM and Assistant Professor at Rowan University, School of Osteopathic Medicine where he is currently CoDirector of the EM and IM/EM residencies. He is a Past President of ACOEP and Past President of FOEM. He is a member of Emergency Medical Services for Children Stakeholders Group in Washington, DC, and a grant contributor to International Center to Heal our Children‘s PETT program at CNMC, and was appointed a member of National Academies of Practice as distinguished practitioner. Currently, Dr. Scali is a key participating grantee in developing a competency based Geriatric Emergency Medicine Residency Curriculum and virtual teaching simulation.

2016 Case Study Poster Competition Wednesday, March 30, 2016 • 2:00pm - 5:00 pm Kierland Ballroom 4A The Foundation for Osteopathic Emergency Medicine welcomes you to the 2016 Case Study Poster Competition! Residents and students from across the country are gathered to present unique and topical cases covering a broad range of emergency medicine.

Posters are on display on the TVs outside the expo hall as well as on the ACOEP app!

Participants will present their findings on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 in 5 minute presentations with 2 minutes for any Q&A. Presenters will be judged on the following criteria: 1. The topic is relevant to Emergency Medicine 2. An in-depth introduction and history of the case is presented 3. Breadth of the differential diagnosis 4. Life-threatening etiologies covered 5. Obscure pathology weighted appropriately 6. Clinical Discussion 7. Integration of Presentation and Conclusions 8. Poster and Presentation 9. Tables and figures are clear and legible 10. This annual competition takes place during the ACOEP Scientific Assembly and is open to residents and students that have completed a research project and would like to present it as a poster summarizing their findings.

FOEM Clinical Pathological Case Competition (CPC) WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2016 7:30am – 3:30pm

This exciting annual competition pits residents against faculty in diagnosing a difficult case. It takes place during the ACOEP Scientific Assembly. Residents submit the case without final diagnosis, and the faculty member is given one month to develop a diagnosis. Both residents and faculty submit PowerPoint presentations. Each program must have a resident and faculty member in order to participate.

FOEM Oral Abstract Competition WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2016 12:30pm – 3:30pm

This annual competition takes place during the ACOEP Scientific Assembly and is open to residents and students that have completed a research project and would like to present it as a PowerPoint presentation (multiple slides, not poster) summarizing their findings.
