The ever changing palette of colours across the sky, sea and land as the light changes.The calm sense of peace you feel when surrounded by the coarse elements of the ocean.

When we envision the coast, memories of salt clad skin, exploring rock pools and playing in the rolling surf drift to mind. Strolling through picturesque seaside towns nestled around quaint harbours, ice cream dripping down our hands. The soft chiming of yacht sheets against their towering masts as they are caught in the salt laden breeze.

The pull of the sea, and our memories of childhood holidays, draws many back to our beautiful coastline.

With nearly eight thousand miles of coastline around the UK, there is always something new to discover. Explore the miles of coastal paths that weave across the rugged cliffs and windswept heathland where pink thrift, rock samphire and the fleshy leaves of the hottentot fig stretch out in a living carpet over the sweeping landscape. The Harbour Loop is a short 2.7mile route that takes you on a tour of the stunning harbourside area of Bristol. Leaving from Queens Square it heads across Pero’s bridge and around the cultural hub of Millennium Square. Following the waterfront path it passes through the redeveloped quayside and our exciting new Brandon Yard development where you’ll get a great view of the SS Great Britain across the water, up to Brunel’s Lock and the Pump House pub before meandering around to the other side of the harbour. Take in the myriad of quirky houseboats and vintage tug boats that dot the river before heading up past The Matthew and to the M shed with the imposing steam cranes outside before heading back across the old swing bridge and back into town.

This easy harbour loop can be extended up to a 15.2 mile route through taking in the Avon Gorge and abundant opportunities to enjoy the views. Passing Brunel’s Lock the route takes you up the Portway and through the imposing gorge, try and spot the Clifton Rocks Railway hidden in the cliff face. At the end of the Portway the route takes a steep climb before following the motorway across the River Avon. From here you can enjoy the stunning vistas stretching out below. The route then swings down to the old wharfside village of Pill before weaving through the beautiful wooded path in Leigh Woods with ample opportunities to spot local wildlife. Pass underneath the stunning feat of engineering that is the Clifton Suspension Bridge before returning back along Spike Island and following the route into town.

Bristol and Bath Railway Path This 13mile off road route links Bristol and Bath and is an easily accessible pathway for all the family. With numerous access points along the way, you can make it as short or as long as you want, or as much as little legs can manage!

Discover a variety of impressive sculptures along the way including the Staple Hill seating designed by local school children, a giant stone drinking centurion and a large brickwork diving fish near Fishponds. Starting at St Philips Road the path is a little haven of tranquillity in the busy city.

Take in long forgotten railway stations; Warmley station still stands and is a handy little refreshment stop in summer months. At Bitton, part of the track has been restored and is now home to the Avon Valley Railway. Continuing down to Bath the pathway winds its way through beautiful Somerset countryside; spot the 300 year old Saltford Brass Mill, a quaint huddle of buildings, before arriving in Bath. Here you can soak up the masses of historical culture on offer.

Visit the famous Roman Baths, a museum or two or take a leisurely stroll round the plethora of boutique shops and sumptuous eateries. Don’t forget to stop by Hope House, our unique development nestled within six acres of parkland on Lansdown Road, Bath.

A short hop away from Ashton Court, Leigh woods offers the blue graded Yer Tiz trail as well as another red graded Gert Lush trail splitting off from the main path. Here, the Keener Skills loop is a moderately graded area where you can improve your skills and practice on its variety of small drops, rock gardens and rollers before returning to the main trails.

I love the variety in my job, no two days are the same; every day is a new challenge where you need to find a solution. I also love the fast paced nature of the industry.

What inspired you to work in the construction industry?

I had no desire to work in construction, my family were in construction and I just thought it was for men (associating it with swearing and wolf whistling) so I went to university to do the opposite, Law. When I finished my degree I was offered a job as a QS and decided to give it a try. Within a week I was hooked and went back to university part time to study Quantity Surveying.

Before this, I didn’t know there was a whole other side to the construction industry.

What is your favourite activity outside of work?

Spending time with my family and going on adventures with my 2 year old son - which normally involves a hammer and building.

Don’t believe that it is just what you see, there are so many opportunities for different roles and the construction industry is really well suited to driven females who are organized, analytical, strong and willing to learn. It’s a fantastically diverse industry. Also the industry welcomes career changers; a lot of skills are transferable to construction. The industry still needs to catch up with offering women more equal/better benefits compared to ‘traditional’ female roles in other sectors but it won’t change unless more women join.

The Grade II listed St Joseph’s House in Portishead is a former convent school situated in beautifully landscaped gardens. With their expertise, Acorn has transformed this site into a stunning collection of contemporary homes, whilst the restored house now comprises five modern apartments.

CHARITIES Working within local communities is key to the ethos of Acorn, and over the past year we have supported our team members in some fantastic charitable endeavours.

In Cornwall, Acorn Blue continues to support the Cornwall Community Foundation through its membership of the Cornwall 100 club. This year also sees them adopt a local school in partnership with Construction in Excellence South West.

Christmas saw the team model some fabulous seasonal knitwear getting in the festive mood all in aid of Save the Children. Santa himself even made an appearance while he dealt with some IT issues!

This year Acorn is supporting the lifesaving work of the RNLI and is helping to raise vital funds through a multitude of fundraising efforts. In Newquay, Acorn Blue is making a donation to the charity for every apartment sold at their One Lusty Glaze development. With this development now completely sold there is a large cheque making its way to the local RNLI station.

Claire Davies, James Groombridge and Peter Thomas from Acorn’s regional office in Cardiff took part in the RNLI’s challenging sponsored Sail Day at Penarth.

Teams took to the high seas on one of 28 yachts all competing to win the Bill Davis Cup.

In total they helped to raise nearly two thousand pounds for the charity that supports teenagers, young adults and their families who have been affected by cancer.

Harry Sedman, Development Manager for Acorn Bristol, took part in the Berlin Marathon raising much needed funds for the Marmalade Trust, a charitable organisation who challenge loneliness and social isolation in elderly and vulnerable people.

“The Berlin Marathon was an incredible experience to be a part of. It was particularly special being able to share the day with so many other runners raising money for their individual amazing charities. Berlin itself was a really interesting city to visit given its deep and difficult history. The marathon weekend offered a real opportunity to celebrate freedom.”

Acorn Blue is hosting two sporting events this summer in aid of the RNLI. In May there will be a sponsored cycle event at Lanyhdrock estate followed by a golf day at Truro Golf Club later in the month.

Proceeds of both are going directly to the RNLI.

Not content with that, Harry gave his time on Christmas Day to the Marmalade Trust, spending quality time with elderly people who would otherwise have been on their own. Harry is also a member of Bristol Junior Chamber and undertakes a variety of community work through them.

September 2016 saw a number of Acorn staff take part in exciting sponsored events to raise funds for local charities. Acorn Blue’s Wayne Rundle and Rowena Arthur flew through the air in a zip wire challenge for local Cornish charity Tanya’s Courage.

The Bristol Team will also be sporting their best fancy dress costumes when they take part in Bristol Rotary Dragon Boat Festival in June in Baltic Wharf, with the funds raised being donated to The Southmead Hospital Charity for Prostate Cancer.
