Santa Cruz Tension Parabolic Strings For the past ten years, Richard Hoover, luthier and mastermind of Santa Cruz Guitars, has worked on developing an alternative design for strings for steelstring guitars: the Santa Cruz Parabolic Strings! The Californian luthier’s idea has value: String gauge is not the decisive factor, but rather their tension when resting on the fretboard and then make the soundboard vibrate. The key with Santa Cruz strings was to develop an extremely precise ration between the core (inner wire) and the phosphor-bronze wrap. That’s why he
does not list the gauge of the strings, but rather the choice of two different tensions. Fingerstylists and folk guitarist don’t always feel comfortable using a concert guitar. The sound is different, of course. Everyone knows that normal steel strings should not be used on a concert guitar, because the string tension is far too high. These strings from Austria were especially developed for concert guitars and are acoustically close to steel strings. This is made possible by notably lower string tension.
