Historical Facility Information 1940 Three-story portion along Mount Vernon Avenue constructed

1966 Commonwealth Avenue portion (including new main entrance) added

1949 Auditorium addition

Why is this important? When a facility is constructed in many parts over many years, you are faced with different systems and thus, needs. Must approach repairs/replacements from a different perspective

Past Noted Issues Water Intrusion • Major water intrusion in Auditorium and 20% of classroom spaces Mold • Auditorium and one classroom had to be closed temporarily due to mold issues Asbestos • Detected on piping insulation Heating and Cooling Piping Corrosion • Identified in West Wing of facility in four classrooms 3


Immediate Response to Past Issues Due to the severity of the issues, there was a need for immediate action. The department instantly took the following steps:

Auditorium –Removed carpet, cleaned mold from walls, seating, and performed initial air sampling

Portions of two (2) hallways – removed ceiling tiles, put protection on roof and sealed areas of noticeable water intrusion, and collected seeping water

Eleven (11) classrooms - removed ceiling tiles, put protection on roof and sealed areas of noticeable water intrusion, and collected seeping water. Contained, segregated and remediated asbestos in impacted classrooms.

“Controls Work” refers to our Building Automation System (BAS), which provides the opportunity to adjust HVAC system components remotely
