What will 2016 bring? Change is consistent in everything we do and experience. Here are some 2016 predictions for change in the air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump industry. The Internet of Things – No longer will air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump systems work in isolation. It’s not just computers that will have an ‘IP address’, the internet’s way of identifying a machine connected to it. Data collected from each unit will help move the industry away from reacting to climatic conditions to predicting them and becoming more efficient. The industry will continue to grow – But, where? – Some analysts predict the global industry will grow by 7% between now and 2020. Great…if your business in the Asia-Pacific region. What about closer to home? Anecdotally, it is still tough ‘out there’ but new entrants into the market need to work hard at developing relationships to stand a chance of getting their systems considered. More mobile – If your website is not ‘mobile-friendly’, you’d better make sure it is, quickly. This industry is shifting rapidly to the internet for finding information. We know that ourselves. Over 30% of our website visitors do so on a smartphone or tablet PC. A year ago, it was 5% or less. So what? People can’t be bothered to hang about on websites which are not mobile-friendly, so you lose a chance to help them. Get your website fixed and get more business. Finally, we hope you enjoyed the 2015 issues of the ACR Journal in their ‘perfect bound’ style celebrating our 25th anniversary. Have a great, 2016! Will Hawkins Editor, willh@warnersgroup.co.uk

Addendum In the November issue an article about TQ Environmental suggested that they place leak detection sensors under beds in hotels. This is not the case. It leads to false readings from refrigerants used in aerosol cans for deodorants and antiperspirants, for example. TQ Environmental places them in smarter places to make their systems more accurate.

EJM BUYS CRYOTECH SYSTEMS

Integral Industrial Refrigeration Directors

INTEGRAL MOVES INTO INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION

Integral UK announced in November that it is moving into the industrial refrigeration and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) markets. The company is well known for its mechanical and engineering and building maintenance services. Two years ago, Integral UK bought the troubled WR which helped it move into the retail and commercial refrigeration services market. Integral UK’s managing director, Bryan Glastonbury said: “We have listened to users in the industrial refrigeration market who require a quality service. Our response has been to broaden and extend our refrigeration capabilities in this area.” The move into industrial refrigeration appears to be a logical expansion of its business. The company has branches across the UK and Ireland, providing a local service nationally already. It has around 100 refrigeration engineers in the field helping both small, local customers and national chains.

Hiring the Skills

Bryan sees an opportunity to use its existing skills and technology gained in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning to help it move into industrial refrigeration. He spotted the need and has hired in talent to develop the new business. David Bostock, who previously was the managing director of GEA Refrigeration, and is currently Chairman of ACRIB, is to lead the new division. Graham Young and Adam Bowey, both formerly with GEA Refrigeration, have joined the team too. Young is the new sales director. Bowey, the new Industrial Projects Director. Bryan added that the new hires were just the beginning of the process of moving into the industrial refrigeration and HVAC sectors. Integral has over 80 apprentices in the company each year to address the skills gap. The new business will provide the full gamut of services including industrial refrigeration design, installation and aftersales service. Given that Integral UK already has qualified refrigeration and air conditioning engineers across the nation in its 16 offices. “Industrial refrigeration is a great way into the industrial market. It is a core part of their process,” said Bryan.

Refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation specialist, EJM Engineered Systems Ltd announced today that it has agreed to buy Derby-based Cryotech Systems Ltd. EJM chairman, Matt Morton, confirmed that, on Friday 4th December 2015, he and Crytotech Systems managing director, Ron Mearns, had agreed on terms for the County Durham-based to buy the Midlands-based business for an undisclosed sum. The deal is a good fit for the companies which both work in the industrial and commercial refrigeration sectors, as well as in air conditioning and ventilation. Geographically, the deal means that EJM can extend its service southwards in the UK more easily, making use of the skilled engineers in Derby to serve customers more locally. In turn, EJM can now service Cryotech customers in the north too. Cryotech Systems was formed in 1982 and EJM in 1980. EJM Engineered systems has seven skilled engineers working from its offices in Shotton Colliery. Cryotech Systems has four engineers in Derby. Ron Mearns will continue working within the new business for the next three years, at least, as engineering director. The businesses will continue to trade under their own names for the time being, until the final details have settled in.

CHEMOURS TO MAKE 400 PEOPLE REDUNDANT

Refrigerant manufacturer, Chemours, is to reduce its workforce by 400 across its global operation over the next year, the company announced this week. The decision affects employees and contractors and will save the company around $50 million a year. The job losses represents 5% of its total workforce and will cost the company about $45 million in the last quarter of 2015. The decision is part of the company’s plan to lower its costs and restructure so it can focus more closely on its core businesses. Chemours president and CEO, Mark Vergnano stated: “We continue to make significant progress executing against our five-point transformation plan by streamlining our portfolio and our organizational structure. The actions announced today will allow us to focus our resources on our core business segments, operate more efficiently, and strengthen our financial position. I want to express my sincere thanks to all the employees who are affected by today’s announcement for their contributions to Chemours.”

MIDLANDS HVAC MANUFACTURER SMASHES TURNOVER TARGET

Hydrodynamic Cooler with pump

Transtherm Cooling Industries, the Coventry-based HVAC system manufacturer, has smashed its turnover target for its financial year, the company announced today. Transtherm matched its turnover from the 2014-2015 financial year in first eight months of this year. They expect to have increased their turnover by about 50% by April 2016. The company put this success down to better economies of scale and maintaining quality while reducing their costs, which means they have been more competitive price against foreign competition. Given that UK manufacturing is still, officially, in recession (according to ONS figures), Transtherm’s success is all the more remarkable. Another factor in their good news, is the flexibility and technical knowledge which their 32-strong team offers. This sets them against their competitors and helps their customers with their energy efficiency needs more effectively. The business is not complacent, however. Given the increasing international interest in and pressure to provide solutions to prevent climate change, Transtherm believes its outlook is positive. Many of its systems are used at renewable energy plants and data centres where energy efficiency is paramount. Transtherm sales director, Tim Bound said: “We have recently recruited excellent new talent into the sales and manufacturing team which has made it possible for us to sell and manufacture more equipment than ever before. “Due to changes in government legislation we are seeing a big increase in cooling systems for the power generation market. We are also enjoying a much greater interest in our packaged products from the building consultant market due to their unique designs and simplified use.”

ONE MILLION POUND INVESTMENT FOR MANOR CONCEPTS

Manor Concepts, the Bedfordshire-based retail refrigeration unit manufacturer is to have £1 million invested into a factory upgrade. The company is getting a new assembly hall, and a new, larger showroom, as well as a new automation for its existing plant. Manor Concepts hopes the building work will be complete and operational early in 2016. The investment is coming from its new owner, Arneg. MD, Mike Tucker said: “By sanctioning this level of investment Arneg, our Italian parent company, has demonstrated its ongoing commitment to expanding the Manor business in the UK. “With larger, more modern facilities we will be in a better position to support the UK refrigeration industry, increasing our range of products and providing an improved service to both the existing Arneg distributor base as well as Manor’s current and future customers.” The Manor Concepts factory will have three ‘flexible production lines’ built into the new assembly hall which will give the company for capacity to make and assemble a wider range of its retail refrigeration units. The existing assembly will allow them to grow the existing manufacturing capability of their display cabinet door solutions.

FSW CELEBRATES GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY IN STYLE FSW, the air conditioning and refrigeration wholesaler, celebrated its 50th anniversary in style with 150 customers and suppliers at its gala dinner at The Belfry on 19th November. The dinner marked the end of its Golden Anniversary year of promotions and events, with Fred MacAulay, entertaining the guests with his quick wit and observational humour. For the last year, FSW ran a number of rewards events including track days, racing and golf days, as well as its customer points program based on purchases.

WINS CLIMATE CENTER

SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR AWARD Middlesbrough-based, high vacuum, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment expert, JAVAC was recently awarded Climate Center’s 2015 Supplier of the Year Award. The award is not easy to win. Climate Center has a gruelling and rigorous set of measures and feedback from across the company from which it assess its suppliers. The measures and tests include how much technical training and support JAVAC’s team provides, how good they are at providing stock replenishments, as well as customer support. JAVAC has moved up Climate Center’s ranking system over recent years, and the business has now achieved the ultimate supplier accolade. Steve Davies, Managing Director, Javac, said: “I was very proud to receive the award on behalf of the whole JAVAC UK team. It is a real group effort - from everyone in the branches to accounts, sales and marketing.” Climate Center, Managing Director, Andy Wighton said: “Working in partnership with our key suppliers to create value for the whole supply chain is really important to us. We’re proud to be associated with such an outstanding supplier and it’s been great to see how successful we can be when we work together.”

BEIJER REF BUYS HRP Beijer Ref, the Swedish owners of Dean & Wood in the UK, announced today that it has bought British refrigeration wholesaler HRP.

Beijer Ref already owns 44% of the HRP shares, which it bought in 2009 when it purchased Carrier Corporation’s refrigeration wholesale business in Europe and South Africa in 2009. HRP’s existing 15 branches across the UK will work alongside and complement the Dean & Wood and RW Refrigeration Wholesale business. HRP carries about 10,000 products in its range from brands including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Samsung, Toshiba, Danfoss, Copeland, Lawton, BOC, Aspera and L’Unite. HRP has found it difficult to make consistent profits in the UK on its £37.7 million (SEK 500 million) turnover. However, Beijer Ref sees opportunities to make use of its existing logistical operations in the UK to make HRP profitable. Beijer Ref CEO, Per Bertland said: “With the acquisition of HRP, we consolidate Beijer Ref’s operation in the important UK market. The three companies will continue to operate under their respective brands. However, through the joint group affiliation, we will be able to offer even better service and more efficient logistics, which improves our total offer in a competitive market.” Buying HRP makes Beijer Ref the market leader in the UK with around £98 million in annual sales from its three businesses in the country. The UK is the company’s second biggest European market after France. The agreement was signed on 18th November 2015 and comes into effect on 1st January 2016.

IOR new focus

ON YOUTH ENGAGEMENT By Gordon Duncan, IOR Project Manager for Youth Engagement

S

ince 2013, when the Institute of Refrigeration launched its “Youth Engagement Project”, working with young people and students, it became a major agenda item for the IOR. As an industry, it has been estimated that only 10% of the workforce are aged between 18 and 24. This represents a risk to the future of the industry to make sure there is the right level of talent coming through.

The IOR Youth Engagement project was set up to combine the efforts of various industry initiatives and schemes and offer a single point of contact through the IOR to encourage interactivity and sharing of expertise and successes in engaging more young people in this rewarding career. The IOR is continuing the momentum of this project by providing a presence for the RAC industry at a number of exhibitions and fairs. It is also providing the tools and resources for members to reach out to schools and colleges to create a buzz about careers in the refrigeration industry. One of the highlighted events was the Big Bang Fair in 2015, where the IOR collaborated with Cool Science UK, to promote refrigeration as a cool career choice. For more information about how they achieved one of the most popular and interesting stands at the fair see the videos and pictures at www.coolscience.org.uk

My involvement with the IOR started with a 6 months internship, working on a market research project, profiling the industry and membership. The aim was to gain insights from members about their perceptions of the benefit of belonging to a professional institute, how they want the IOR to support their career development at different stages and the impact for the future of the industry. I talked to over 100 members on the phone, at committee meetings and events and found their enthusiasm for their industry and willingness to share their views encouraging. Looking at a statistical analysis, a key finding from the initial research was that more and more young people are starting to join the Institute – potentially the result of the past few years of working with colleges and universities to raise the profile of refrigeration. The challenge now will be to ensure that they are provided with the right development opportunities and links to pursue their career in refrigeration. Following on from this initial research project, the IOR will be looking even deeper into youth engagement in the industry and comparing this to other

As part of the IOR’s focus on youth engagement; Fantastic Fridges, the website and Facebook page, was relaunched this year. A platform where youngsters can play fun and insightful games, partake in interactive refrigeration quizzes whilst giving them the option to share their scores, the quizzes and more on their own Facebook accounts. engineering bodies and results in different countries. This new project aims to explore in much more depth some of the key issues such as: ₀ Whether there is a curriculum and skills gap in education and apprenticeship schemes, ₀ The media hype behind the lack of interest in engineering careers, ₀ Innovative learning techniques including alternative methods such as e-learning and community collaboration, ₀ How, as a membership institution, the IOR can better support the industry’s progression across the whole range of member needs The purpose of the current work is to gain a deeper understanding of where the refrigeration industry needs improvement in delivering a younger, highly trained and skilful workforce to promote the industry as an exciting, prosperous and cool career option. The outputs are likely to be a better understanding of the industry’s workforce needs, the specific skills requirements of recently employed graduates and apprentices and requirements of teaching careers in refrigeration. It should also provide a clear direction for the Institute and its members for the future. If you have experience in recruiting young people, graduates, apprentices or careers initiatives and would like to get more involved in this project please contact me: Gordon Duncan, gordon@ior.org.uk

TRAINED TO TAKE CONTROL Ben Bartle-Ross, technical trainer at Mitsubishi Electric asks for feedback on installer support for controls

normally try and use this column to (hopefully) impart useful knowledge that will either get you, the reader, thinking, or help promote the values of ongoing training to career development.

This time, though, I’d like to use the column to pose a series of questions about how we as an industry train installers on the best use of air conditioning controls. As a manufacturer, we know that we have some of the most advanced control systems available, yet we often find end users who are using these vastly technological resources as little more than an ‘on’ and ‘off’ switch. The questions below are what we, as a manufacturer, are grappling with; so if you do have a view, I’m sure Will the Editor would be happy to carry a letter or comment. Answer them online here: http://w2u.eu/MEDec2015 . Or you can email me directly at Ben.Bartle-Ross@meuk.mee.com.

1. Do you think that manufacturers in general supply enough information to you the installer to enable you to properly convey all of the potential and benefits benefits that building operators can get from their controls? 2. Is this even something you bother with? Do you have the time? Or do you just handover a control manual on leaving? 3. Are the right people there when you handover the system or do you feel that someone should be there to represent the manufacturer and help ‘train’ the end user? 4. Should manufacturers fifind nd ways of offering offering training on controls directly to end users or is this stepping into your ‘territory’? 5. And what about control companies? Do you think they would benefit benefit from training with individual manufacturers?

QUOTING THE SYSTEM & THE CUSTOMER PROPOSAL

Fujitsu’s technical team takes you through the process and pitfalls of an air conditioning project from start to after sales. Here James Richardson, Fujitsu’s technical engineer, looks at the quote and customer proposal.

Our theoretical two storey building, which we introduced in the first column, has a floor area of 160m2 per floor with open plan and cellular offices. Different tenants occupy each floor.

The days of sending the customer just a price for a VRF are long gone. Most customers now expect to have a full report alongside the quotation.

The larger the project, the more changes will occur and the more time it takes to convert the initial enquiry into an order. Additional considerations that may need to be addressed in the event of an order: ₀ Are there any planning restrictions that may affect your design approach? ₀ Site structural issues? These may require the services of a structural engineer. ₀ Landlord permissions? If the client is a tenant, has permission to proceed been obtained? ₀ Financials. ₀ Project time scale/programme.

Changes to the Report

How you present your report is important. In most cases it will be sent by e-mail with some attachments, such as product pictures and CAD drawings. However, for some clients it may be better to present the quotation in person. This way any questions can be handled there and then and you can take time to walk the client through your decision making process. It also gives you the chance to gauge the reaction to your offer on the spot. Next time -installation planning and on-site works.

Name and job title

The ACR Journal met Anna Carrera, Department Manager of Quality Assurance at Hitachi in Spain to ask about her career in the industry.

Where did you study and what course/ diploma/degree did you gain? I have a Technical Degree with a postgraduate in statistics and QA application. Hitachi’s Econofresh unit

H I T A C H I

Are you a member of any institutions and what benefit do you get from them?

As a personal matter, it is not applicable. But as a company, we are a member of the most important group industry associations in Spain and Europe. For example, we participate in voluntary independent product testing programmes that provide the foundations for fair competition – on equal terms and based on comparable data. This ultimately contributes to the improvement of the image and integrity of our company and the whole industry.

I think this largely male dominated atmosphere could truly benefit from a greater female influence”

Women in ACR.indd 17

Tell us about your employer, Hitachi

Our factory is located in a small village in Vacarisses, around 35km north of Barcelona. Since the 1st of October 2015, two large companies have joined forces: Japanese Hitachi and American JCI, thus forming Johnson Controls – Hitachi Air Conditioning. The two have very different cultures, so it will be an exciting challenge for us to integrate the best of both worlds. Our activity is the design, production and sales of air conditioners and heat pumps for commercial, industrial and residential use, with capacities up to 50kW; We also produce water chillers for space cooling or industrial processes, with capacities up to 1200kW. The company has 350 employees, of which 20 staff members work in R&D and 11 in testing laboratories.

What attracted you to the industry?

A lot of things. I like my job, a lot. I like to work together with people who have very different profiles. I also like to investigate and understand why something happens. Almost every day, I go back home having learnt something new. The most negative side is that there are almost no women in this industry field, either when I attend meetings in Asia, or even here in Europe. It is a shame because I think this largely male dominated atmosphere could truly benefit from a greater female influence.

DECEMBER/JANUARY 2016

What do you specialise in now? Or, what type of projects do you work on?

Inside the Hitachi YUTAKI S COMBI

I have been working on two major projects since February. The first project is the reinforcement of testing in electromagnetic emissions and immunity for our units. We have constructed a Faraday chamber and developed enhanced technical competence for superior testing performance. The second project is the creation of a testing room for central controls. Here, we can validate the performance of newly developed central control devices combined with air conditioning units in any virtual environment. The system is completely flexible to simulate any real condition.

What do you know now about the industry which you wished you had known before?

The industry has become much more technical and professional, and the required degree of expertise and knowledge is incredibly complex. Group management, to coordinate the diversity of cultures, is becoming more and more necessary.

What excites or interests you about the industry and your part in it now?

The evolution towards a more global world, with solutions becoming increasingly local. Also, the ever-accelerating evolution of new technologies and how this effects our jobs on a daily basis.

What would you say to other women who are considering coming into the ACR industry?

Their minds should be open to continuous learning, since our field and our world in the wider sense are evolving very quickly. The HVAC world is very interesting, with its deep interaction of industry fields, distribution, customers. R&D – All of which foster the development of different professional skills. They should be brave and confident that any job done by a man can be done just as well as by a woman. You may sometimes feel lonely in a meeting room full of men, but in my case, I have never felt lacking in recognition or attention.

Women in ACR.indd 18

that everything will progress and ensure a better future for the company and its staff.

What are the challenges of this industry? Where do you see your career developing?

On the one hand, it requires a deep specialisation, which I have already acquired during my career at Hitachi. On the other hand, it also requires generalisation. I think that the evolution will be towards more managementoriented positions, without forgetting those day-to-day operations that require e follow-up and improvement. The new joint venture between JCI and Hitachi brings a lot of opportunities for global knowledge. There are some uncertainties in Europe, but I understand

To contribute to higher comfort standards in society with our HVAC equipment, with units allowing perfect temperature control. Also, to contribute towards significant environmental improvement, supplying products with low noise level and high energy efficiency.

What are the benefits of being in your role (e.g. travelling, variety, monetary?)

The variety of technical knowledge gained will be permanently mastered for decision taking in the future. I face questions and challenges continually, and the satisfaction of successfully solving them is extremely rewarding. Finally, to see the daily breakthroughs of the work team that I am leading.

TRAINING ENGINEERS TO BE ADAPTABLE FOR FUTURE NEEDS Steve Dixey, Mechanical Trainer with HETA looks at training engineers for the future

D

o we train refrigeration engineers or do we train engineers who can be adaptable? Do you want a very specific set of knowledge and practical skills? Or, do you want adaptability?

Who do we train and how?

The dreaded question we get when one applies for a job; “Have you experience of Refrigeration Machine XYZ with multiple sprangle valves and plenty of what-nots”?

HETA.indd 20

Engineers make ‘things’ that work or make ‘things’ work better. But, they do this in quite particular ways. The report identifies six engineering habits of mind (EHoM) which, taken together, describe the ways engineers think and act: 1. Systems thinking 2. Adapting 3. Problem-finding 4. Creative problem solving 5. Visualising 6. Improving

Let us open up the above machine and look inside. What do we find? Bearings, slides, springs, a drive system, a lubrication system and assorted nut, bolts and gaskets. So, what’s new? Actually, very little. What about operational principles? Has much changed since Newton, Charles, Kelvin, Boyle and the rest made those discoveries several centuries ago? Not much from what I can gather. Now, Refrigeration Machine XYZ with multiple sprangle valves and plenty of

23/12/2015 12:58

what-nots may have been placed in a different system that was custom built to freeze apples instead of pears. The control system may also be custom designed. So, let’s take a look at that. In order to freeze apples we might tell a control program to complete a series of stages over a period and in order to freeze pears we take longer and go through more stages. However, let’s take the control system apart and what do we find? A programmable controller, temperature and pressure controllers, temperature and pressure sensors and several tens of metres of pipework. Individually again, is there anything new? I doubt it as those switches and sensors in a refrigeration system do not operate differently to those sensors in a hydraulic system, a steam system or a chemical production process. In practice engineering is mostly taking existing stuff and existing principles and adapting it to meet new needs. A bearing is a bearing no matter where it resides. Gas still gets hot when you compress it and cools when you expand it. Basic physical and chemical principles apply anywhere you care to look, on Earth or on Pluto.

Feedback from companies in many sectors show that these key points of ability to problem-solve and adapt are not always being encouraged due to a focus on exams and knowledge. In my journey from steelworks apprentice (rolling mills, diesel-powered mobile plant, plant services) to rolling mill fitter \ machinist to chemical plant fitter to food factory fitter to engineering system technician looking after pneumatic, hydraulic, refrigeration, steam, packing and process machinery in the food industry, I can identify with those six points.

How about training technicians and engineers to be able to understand and use those basic (and not so basic) principles in current and in predicted engineering trends?

Might you not get yourself an adaptable workforce who can face the future with confidence because the basics

of mechanics, physics and chemistry actually change very little? HETA turn out apprentices for a wide variety of industries in mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, fabrication and machining trades. Within each trade group, they all broadly follow the same path regardless of their company profile and are encouraged to follow the six points detailed above. The client companies benefit by getting an adaptable workforce and the apprentices benefit because there is no such thing as a job for life and they need to be adaptable to stay in employment. This also means if they attend training courses for new machines or systems, they can quickly identify key principles, absorb, and apply the new knowledge quickly.

www.heta.co.uk

Personal attributes of an engineer

What about the personal attributes that make a good engineer? Are engineers born with it, learn it or absorb it from mentors by some strange process of osmosis? The Royal Academy of Engineering produced a report titled “Thinking like an engineer - Implications for the education system” in 2014 that makes some thought-provoking points. The report identifies key engineering habits and summarises 6 key qualities; Some of the best training providers and internal training departments such as Rolls Royce aim to turn out adaptable engineers who use their understanding of basic principles in a range of areas, allied with an engineers’ mind-set to drive business forward. The report also has implications for the compulsory training sector.

SOME OF THE BEST TRAINING PROVIDERS AND INTERNAL TRAINING DEPARTMENTS SUCH AS ROLLS ROYCE AIM TO TURN OUT ADAPTABLE ENGINEERS WHO USE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF BASIC PRINCIPLES IN A RANGE OF AREAS” HETA.indd 21

Better Air

BETTER BRAIN It hardly comes as a surprise to anyone who works in a stuffy office, but a recent study recently confirmed that improved Indoor Air Quality’ (IAQ) improves how people perform at work.

T

he study by Harvard University researchers in the USA showed that better IAQ doubled the score of participants in a series of cognitive function tests. In the study (The Impact of Green Buildings on Cognitive Function), employees working in green building environments with ‘enhanced ventilation’ scored, on average, 101% better than when working in a traditional building environments.

United Technologies Chief Sustainability Officer, John Mandyck said: “When it comes to the decisionmaking ability of green building occupants, intelligence is in the air. “We know green buildings conserve natural resources, minimize environmental impacts and improve the indoor environment, but these

Harvard Uni IAQ.indd 23

results show they can also become important human resource tools for all indoor environments where cognitive abilities are critical to productivity, learning and safety.” He added: “The payback for improved indoor environmental quality far outweighs the investment, considering that more than 90 percent of the costs associated with a building are related to the people who work within it once construction is completed.” The people in the survey faced tests on ‘basic, applied and focused activity levels; task orientation; crisis response; information seeking; information usage; breadth of approach; and strategy.’

Dr. Joseph Allen, Assistant Professor of Exposure Assessment Science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health said: “This study suggests that indoor environments can have a profound impact on the decisionmaking performance of workers, which is a primary indicator of worker productivity.” He continued: “These results are provocative for three reasons. First, they suggest that the levels of carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds that we commonly encounter in conventional office buildings are associated with decreases in worker performance compared to when those same workers are in green building environments. “Second, when we enhance ventilation and optimize indoor environmental conditions, we see improvements in the cognitive function of workers. And third, these results fill important knowledge gaps in existing research about the relationship between green buildings and occupant health.” Find out more details about the report here: www.chgeharvard.org/ resource/impact-green-buildingscognitive-function

Will Hawkins flew out to Seoul, South Korea, to visit Samsung at the launch of its new air conditioning products. Samsung 360 cassette

S

amsung had a big week, recently. The South Korean company kicked off its global campaign to introduce four new air conditioning solutions for the domestic and light commercial markets. They flew out the international ACR press, several hundred partners and customers to learn about products which Samsung hopes will help them reach further into new and existing markets.

Samsung arranged a slick round of 5-minute presentations on each product and a launch on stage reminiscent of another, USA-based technology company’s product launches. It was delivered with a punch and focused on performance and style from the new products. When the manufacturers have products made in a similar ways using similar components, what can Samsung do to make their solutions stand out?

Out & About.indd 26

Big investment

Showing how efficient your air conditioning system is compared to your competitors is one way to differentiate. It is a powerful tool, and one area where you have to keep investing in research and development to make sure you are ahead of your competitors. Samsung has invested big money into its new air conditioning systems. To illustrate the investment, Samsung

took us to their research lab and centres. The former is the biggest I have seen from any manufacturer to date. It’s massive. In one area, we went from a solar radiation zone which was +35 degrees C to a simulated outdoor environment of -22 degrees C. They switched off the lights in one test chamber and turned on lasers which showed the distribution of the air in the room. There are sounds labs too which have visual sound sensors so you can see where they noise is coming from in a room. The detail Samsung goes into is staggering. More impressive, however, was Samsung’s research centre in another part of the city. The company recently built six office blocks and installed different heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems into each of them. The HVAC systems cost $15 million and they are connected to a control centre where a team is monitoring them. The control room looks more like NASA than any HVAC control centre I’ve seen before. In the main building, they are comparing its ‘hybrid’ HVAC system with a set-up in another building. The building we visited uses its latest VRF system with a ground source heat pump system, both feeding a water circuit into which heat energy is

added or extracted. The main load for the building is cooling. Excess heat is stored in the ground or, in winter, used to melt snow on the car parks.

Circular Style and impact

The product which stood out of the new line-up is Samsung’s 360 Cassette. Given that most air conditioning cassettes are square, the name of Samsung’s product is a give-away on its shape. The circular cassette is not only a refreshing shape, it’s a capabilities are different too. Instead of pumping cooled or heated air out in four directions that you expect from four-way cassettes, the 360 sends the air out in a more even circle from the unit. That means the conditioning air is more evenly spread which makes it more comfortable.

So what?

Given that many office workers sit near an indoor air conditioning unit set into the ceiling, the 360 overcomes one particular problem with four-way cassettes, namely draughts. Often, sitting near a four-way indoor unit, you can find yourself blasted with cold or warm air in your face. That quickly becomes uncomfortable with either over-heating or over-cooling. No such problems with the 360 Cassette. It has no louvres and, instead, sends out the air in a circular fashion. That not only prevents an ‘over-concentration’ of air in one direction, but also makes sure the room is evenly heated or cooled more quickly. If you prefer to send the air vertically down, the unit allows you to do that. Or, you can send the air into specific zones in a room. An aspect of Samsung’s new products, especially the 360, was design. Its round shape means that it is going to appeal to architects who want a more sympathetic indoor air conditioning unit for their designs. The 360 Cassette fits in nicely. Moreover, Samsung says you can have it any colour your want so it blends into the room. The 360 cassette is a ‘premium product’ therefore it is likely to be more costly than a four-way indoor unit. Samsung have not confirmed the price yet. However, they are confident that its better performance will make this a strong choice because of its looks and its lower cost of ownership over its lifetime.

Out & About.indd 27

Samsung chillers at its Research Centre, Seoul

Samsung VRF

Samsung’s next product is less about the design (it looks much like any other outdoor VRF unit) and more about performance. Samsung’s new DVM S 30HP has some new features which increase its heating capacity by 29% percent. These include Samsung’s new ‘Super Inverter Scroll Compressor’ which has a ‘flash injection system’. These features make it much more efficient than its competitors’ alternatives. Space-saving is a primary benefit of Samsung’s DVM S Eco 14HP side discharge VRF unit. It’s designed for flats and office buildings where end users need to make use of the space on their roofs for other services (e.g. gardens or sports areas), or if they don’t have the room for larger, traditional VRF outdoor units.

Samsung’s new chiller

EU F-Gas regulations have pushed Samsung to develop its new DVM Chiller. The company realised that to enter the chiller market it needed to focus on the

small to medium-sized chiller market. Its new chiller combines is a combined aircooled and VRF systems in one. See more details about the new products here: http://w2u.eu/SamsungOct15

What about refrigerants?

When quizzed about their position on lowGWP refrigerants (e.g R32), Samsung is sticking with R410a for the time being. The alternative refrigerants have merits but Samsung has not done enough research and development yet to warrant using refrigerants like R32 or R290 (Propane).

OUT AND

ABOUT W I T H

Why is Samsung not more dominant in the UK?

The company has an impressive range of products, immense research and development capabilities, and scalable production capabilities. Why is it not one of the top HVAC manufacturers in the UK? I asked Samsung’s Charles H. Park, Samsung’s vice president of their Home Appliance Division this question. Mr Park stated that the company had not been ready to make its big push into the UK (or countries other than South Korea). Samsung had not neither the right products nor infrastructure in place to make their entry successful. The business now has stock of most of its new products

S A M S U N G

in place (or on the way) to be able to fulfil orders from its distributors and partners. He continued saying that they recognise Samsung has a big potential to grow outside of South Korea. They know they are behind but they have now addressed this by investing in the people, products and processes they need to be successful. Samsung has been patiently designing, testing and developing its products to meet the new

market conditions before setting off on an expansion program. Most contractors tend to focus on the capital cost of HVAC products. This probably happens because it is hard for manufacturers to differentiate their products from their competitors’. Therefore, contractors have little option to choose between products other than price. Samsung is focusing on differentiating its products not only performance and efficiency, but also on using as little space as possible, which could be used better for generating revenue. Design and looks are an important factor in Samsung’s differentiation. Samsung had a professor of architecture (Chan Joong Kim) and an architect (Russell Brown) presenting their views on the importance of the look and feel of their new 360 cassette. Their focus was on making their buildings ‘human-centric’. Samsung is, without doubt. serious about expanding its business. The massive investments show it. Its new product range is impressive. However, do they have enough ‘boots on the ground’ in the UK to compete. Let’s hope so.

REFRIGERANTS: OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW A-Gas Managing Director, John Ormerod, looks back at the refrigerants market in 2015

I

t’s hard to believe that the latest round of F-Gas Regulations has been with us for a year. Most of you probably haven’t seen a great deal of change but for A-Gas – at the top of the refrigerant supply chain – it’s a different story.

supply chain we can see what’s coming down the road and to meet this challenge it’s important to ramp up the education process. Every commentator who has evaluated the F-Gas Regulations says that whatever happens over the next two years we will be working in a very different world in 2018. In 2016 the focus needs to be on R404A replacements. There are two ideal candidates on the market – Opteon XP40 (R449A) and Solstice N40 (R448A). Both have low GWP (Global Warming Potential) credentials and are closely matched to R404A in terms of refrigeration capacity. They are already in use and although it is early days, it is clear that they are a key part of the solution to leave R404A behind.

Through the new quota system, we, like many others, are now subject to caps on the amount of refrigerant we can introduce to the industry. In 2016 things get tighter as we are faced with the first step down year. This will see a seven per cent reduction (on a CO2 equivalent basis) in the amount of refrigerant we can place on the market. So, 2016 is the year to prepare as the F-Gas regulations may begin to bite at end user level.

Slow to Move Away from R404A

Many have not grasped what the changes are going to mean in practice. While commentators have talked at length about them, this has not been translated into a shift in buying behaviours and 2015 was a year of slow progress in the movement away from R404A. I expect business as usual will continue until the point we see shortages of R404A and I suspect in the year ahead there will be a lot less of this refrigerant available on the market. The industry has yet to understand the full implications of the quota system. For engineers it’s very much business as usual but for those of us higher up the

AGAS.indd 34

A Look at Leak Detection

John Ormerod

THE INDUSTRY HAS YET TO UNDERSTAND THE FULL IMPLICATIONS”

F-Gas has brought about a change in the way we look at leak detection and this aspect of maintenance programmes is growing in importance. As it is no longer based on kilograms in a system but on a CO2 equivalent, the engineer has to calculate some of these values to evaluate the leak detection frequency. As a result we are seeing the introduction of new electronic and online-based tools to assist the engineer. The GTO refrigerant management solution from A-Gas is an F-Gas reporting and advanced cylinder-tracking tool designed to make the task of

monitoring refrigerant and cylinder usage easy. This new tool is indispensable for engineers and is a device that makes the F-Gas Regulations simpler to understand and implement. These advances in technology are changes in the industry that engineers cannot ignore. In 2016, lifecycle management of refrigerants will grow in importance. As part of this, A-Gas is now offering an oil disposal service which will take away the tricky problem of getting rid of this waste product from refrigeration and air conditioning systems in a safe and environmentally-friendly way. Up until now this has often been a piece of the puzzle missing for many contractors.

A Mildly Flammable Situation

In 2016 we will also see the finalisation of European refrigeration standard EN378 which will hopefully provide the clarity that the industry is needing on mildly inflammable refrigerants. In 2015 we saw the rise of these refrigerants with R32 making its mark. They are a big part of the future in air conditioning and whatever people say, sales are going to grow. R32 is not the only mildly flammable refrigerant that we are going to see entering the market. Some of the lower GWP alternatives for R404A planned for release with the 2022 product ban in mind mean that the industry has to get its head around how it handles these gases. The legislation has some catching up to do but change will have an effect. At some stage during 2017 the European Commission will review the progress of the F-Gas Regulations. This line in the sand, pretty much what they did in 2011 with the original F-Gas Regulations, means that further developments will certainly be on the horizon. One thing for sure over the next few years is that the industry will not be standing still. These are without doubt times of change in refrigeration and air conditioning. So do not miss the bus and be ready to use the regulations to the advantage of your business.

TIME TO PLAN YOUR MOVE A Dave Richards, Regional Sales Manager from Climalife, discusses the alternative refrigerants that can ease your move away from the high GWP refrigerant R404A.

I

t has been well documented that the F-Gas Regulation is going to create a problem for those still needing R404A in 2018 unless they take action this year and next to lessen the impact. Various trade associations and refrigerant producers have highlighted the impending issues and If you are still in any doubt of the need for action to replace R404A, we recommend you look at the EPEE Gapometer presentation which you can find here; http://w2u.eu/Gapometer There are four key areas that need to be addressed, firstly R404A should no longer be used in new equipment, old equipment replaced and existing equipment converted to a lower GWP alternative. The recovered

Climalife.indd 36

Implications for R404A

Although a ban on the use of virgin R404A does not apply until 2020, its availability, and products like it with a high GWP, could become much more restrictive in just under two years when the 2018 quota reduction step comes into effect.

R404A for replaced or converted systems can be reclaimed for future use for those systems still on R404A that are harder or more difficult to convert. The first step is to decide which refrigerant you want to use and then how to use it. As always there is a choice of alternatives.

E AWAY FROM IT IN Lower GWP alternatives to R404A

This month we will be looking at one of the replacement options on the market, R407F. Look out for our follow up article next month that will focus on other lower GWP alternatives. R407F, also known as Genetron® Performax™ LT, has been around for a while now and is in widespread use both in new and existing equipment to replace R404A in a wide range of applications for the commercial and industrial sectors. It’s a refrigerant blend of R125, R134a and R32, with a GWP of 1825 just over half that of R404A at 3922. Whilst it is used in supermarket applications it is also used in cold stores and food processing applications that have previously used R404A. Users have been pleased with the energy saving benefits witnessed compared to R404A and there are numerous case studies that have verified the energy savings achieved compared to R404A. These savings tend to be greater in medium temperatures applications. Some customers have also reported that Performax™ LT has also been easier to detect for leaks than R404A, which is a positive insight when you consider the importance placed on minimising leaks and conducting regular leak checks by the F Gas regulation. Experience of using R407F is also widespread across Europe.

Climalife.indd 37

A NUMBER OF COMPRESSOR MANUFACTURERS APPROVE R407F AND IT CAN BE FOUND IN THEIR DESIGN SOFTWARE FOR USE WITH THEIR PRODUCTS.” Understanding differences between R407F and R404A

As with all R404A alternatives there are a number of subtle differences between R407F and R404A that need to be understood. Pressures are similar but not identical and secondly, it has a larger temperature glide that needs to be allowed for. Those using the product must consider and understand how these differences may affect a system they are installing or retrofitting, however, in the vast majority of cases it is simply a case of re-commissioning the system and adjusting the expansion valve and superheat settings for the required conditions. Performax™ LT (R407F) works well in both medium and low temperatures systems, however when evaporating down below -30ºC its higher discharge temperature may need to be taken into consideration for the design of equipment in question. For new equipment it is also advisable to check line sizing, etc. Electronic expansion valves are readily available for use with R407F (Performax™ LT) however in most cases it can operate on a R404A valve; at worst a change of orifice may be required. Pressure temperature tables are available in various forms and it features on many of the popular free slide rule apps that are now available for smartphones.

A number of compressor manufacturers approve R407F and it can be found in their design software for use with their products. There is also no need for an oil type change as it works with POE oil, the same as R404A, although please remember that if you are retrofitting to follow the conversion guidelines and when changing refrigerant it is good practice to also change the oil and put a fresh charge into the system. The potential energy savings compared to R404A are well highlighted in case studies. This alone has been the driver for some end users to change from R404A, however, with the need to significantly reduce the bank of R404A there may be other more pressing reasons very shortly to change. It’s important that we as an industry move away from using R404A soon and Performax™ LT (R407F) is one of a number of favourable replacement options. Do also speak to refrigerant specialists, such as ourselves, to review all the options that are available to you and ensure it is the right choice for your particular system.

Next month we will cover other R404A alternatives with a lower GWP.

EXPERTS HELP ETHNIC FOOD SUPP L The UK’s top frozen Ethnic & Special Dietary ready meals supplier, The Punjab Kitchen, recently needed to upgrade the refrigeration equipment at its 80,000 square foot site in South Shields.

T

he business supplies its specialist meals across the UK and employs 90 full and part time members of staff. Their biggest customer is the NHS and, because of increasing demand for frozen special diet meals, they recently decided to expand their freezer area with a new 4,000m3 coldstore. Managing Director, Mr Mohammed Ishaq, turned to his trusted local refrigeration contractor, Durham based H A Davie, to deliver a flexible and economical solution. H A Davie is no stranger to handling projects this big. The business began in 1902 and has over a century’s experience of delivering engineering solutions. H A Davie Managing Director, David Martin- Jones, also called on the skills and experience of national refrigeration and air conditioning wholesaler Dean & Wood, to use their in- house technical team to assist H A Davie design and select the right equipment for the job. Dean & Wood said: “After the initial site consultation it was clear that the end user and H A Davie were keen to install an energy efficient

solution for their site at South Shields. Previous successful installations led us to recommend the Bitzer Ecostar condensing unit. This unit has worked well in previous projects where the end user has benefited from enhanced energy savings in comparison to their previous systems.” The Bitzer Ecostar is an inverterdriven condensing unit which modulates compressor speed depending on the load within the cold store, thus saving the customer money on their energy bills. On average, the Bitzer Ecostar can save £1,000 a year on energy when compared to a traditional semi-hermetic system in the same application.

ALL PARTIES WERE KEEN TO INSTALL A RELIABLE HIGHLY EFFICIENT SET OF EQUIPMENT WITH ENERGY SAVINGS BEING PARAMOUNT”

Dean & Wood explained: “The proposed freezer store at The Punjab Kitchen was around 4000m3 and had high usage and turnover of stock factors. “All parties were keen to install a reliable highly efficient set of equipment with energy savings being paramount. The specified area required a total of 76kW of cooling load at peak conditions. This meant five LHV6-4CES-9F3Y Bitzer Ecostars and five LUVE F45HC1212E6 industrial coolers would be required to provide the design capacity.” H A Davie Managing Director David Martin- Jones commented: “We have designed and installed three coldstores for The Punjab Kitchen over

the last three years. All have used Bitzer units. The most recent two freezer coldstores used seven Bitzer Ecostar units in total.” The original two Bitzer Ecostar units have been operating trouble free and with high energy efficiency for two

years. This track record of reliability and economy prompted Mr Ishaq, from The Punjab Kitchen, to work with H A Davie and Dean & Wood on the new project. The new solution includes five Bitzer Ecostar units which provide the maximum operating flexibility and economy.

UK FARMING Climate Center and Celsius Projects deliver custom build project for J&E Medcalf Ltd

C

limate Center has worked in partnership with design and construction specialist, Celsius Projects to deliver a bespoke new-build abattoir in Halifax, West Yorkshire for wholesale butchers and farmers, J&E Medcalf Ltd.

Respected, regional family business J&E Medcalf Ltd was approaching its 50th anniversary and was keen to evolve and secure the future of the enterprise for the next generation of farmers. Supported by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) through its Rural Economy Grant of the Rural Development Programme for England, the business teamed up with Celsius Projects to deliver the design and build of an innovative new abattoir that would generate significant efficiency and environmental improvements, as well as comply with upcoming legislation.

Climate Center.indd 40

The resulting 7,000sq ft multi-species facility will increase throughput at the site by 50 per cent and will deliver a significant reduction in the carbon footprint. Significantly, the facility also complies with the future 2020 F-Gas legislation on 404A phase out. Celsius Projects provides specialist design, construction and project management services exclusively in the food and drinks industry and was appointed as the design and build contractor after competing with numerous national contractors at competitive tender. They selected Climate Center as the approved supply partner for the project and via the specialist branch in Leeds provided refrigeration products from Copeland, Searle and A Gas. Claire Medcalf from J&E Medcalf Ltd explains:

“We are eager to grow trust and confidence in what we are eating and where it has come from. Having livestock in fields in the English countryside is a must. By creating a new abattoir we strongly believe we are investing in the next generation and providing future employment opportunities in the local area. We have strong links with the farming community here, supporting local butcher’s shops and farms and want to make sure we’re doing our bit to ensure that farming and butchery in the UK can continue and, ultimately, prosper.” Sarah Spearing, Business Development Manager at Celsius Projects, added: “During the two year project we have worked closely with J&E Medcalf Ltd on the design, which has been particularly challenging given the topography of the site, and constraints created by existing site services. The aim was to move the site into larger, modern premises with up-to-date facilities including better

ENERGY FROM ICE Heating and refrigeration solutions manufacturer, Viessmann, has installed the first UK ‘ice store’ system, in a UK property domestic property, the company announced recently.

Viessmann installed the first system in a new, sustainable housing development at HUF HAUS’ UK show room near Weybridge, Surrey. The innovative system recovers energy from renewable sources to heat or cool buildings, and supplies hot water. Viessmann installed the first system in a new, sustainable housing development at HUF HAUS’ UK show room near Weybridge, Surrey. The system takes energy from ice to heat or cool the house. It supplies the energy to heat pumps for heating and hot water in the winter, and for cooling in the summer. The Viessmann system takes energy from water in its ice store. The water temperature drops and, as the energy is withdrawn, the water freezes . The system keeps on taking heat from the ice. When water turns to a solid latest heat is released. The latent heat is kept in the ice store. A standard 10 m³ ice store for a detached house generates

Viessmann.indd 48

a heat gain equivalent to about 100 litres of fuel oil and is capable of 10 kW of heating output. Because the amount of latent heat released is equivalent to that required for the inverse process of thawing, in effect there is 100% energy transfer and zero loss over time. The system includes a ‘heat source management’ system in the heat pump control unit. It is programmed to take energy for heating from the ice store or from a solar air absorber on the property’s roof. The ice store also takes ground heat from the surrounding area, if the ground temperature is high, to regenerate heat out of winter. The ice store can provide natural cooling in the summer inside the building. Here, the water is allowed to fully turn to ice at the end of the heating season. Heat is then drawn from the heating system via an extraction heat exchanger and channeled into the ice store. This melts the ice and consequently cools the heating circuit within the home.

THE INNOVATIVE SYSTEM RECOVERS ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES TO HEAT OR COOL BUILDINGS, AND SUPPLIES HOT WATER.”

How the ice store operates

Viessmann’s technical director, Christian Engelke said: “We are very pleased that HUF HAUS has selected Viessmann’s sustainable ice store heating system for its UK show home, as part of the company’s efforts to achieve zero carbon efficiency. The technology is being installed in hundreds of homes and businesses in Germany each year, but in bringing the system to the UK for the first time, we are able to demonstrate to UK customers that our ‘heating with ice’ system is one answer that not only works in theory but is a very real and viable solution for responsible heating for the future.” Lead Architect for HUF HAUS, Peter Huf said: “The new HUF show house is the first residential property in the UK to be fitted

with heating with ice technology, and the innovation that underpins the system emulates the innovative approach to architecture for which HUF HAUS is renowned. “As an evolution on from air source and ground source heat pumps, which demand the drilling of deep bore holes, heating with ice works with HUF technology to perpetuate an ambient internal temperature regardless of the weather outside, all the while using minimal energy. By extension, it also allows clients to adapt to ever changing temperatures and geological conditions for the long term.”

market. The range is the most compact yet and offers optimal efficiency using a single phase supply. The air source heat pumps being installed on The Wildflowers development site have a bespoke inverter compressor, tuned for maximum efficiency in UK climatic conditions. For the first time in the UK market all the component parts of the machine have been optimised to suit UK demands and the machine has the best seasonal performance on the market in its class with a COP of 4.0 (A7 / W35). Given their exceptional co-efficients of performance the Stiebel Eltron air source heat pumps are projected to reap major benefits for owners of The Wildflowers properties. Savings of, on average, £800 per annum are estimated in terms of energy costs when compared against non-renewable heat sources and the heat pumps will reach an output level that enables flow temperatures of up to + 65 °C to be achieved.

Doing What It Is Designed to Do

Speaking about The Wildflowers project, Mark McManus, Managing Director of Stiebel Eltron UK says, “The Clayland Estates project in Norfolk is the perfect example of Stiebel Eltron’s latest air source heat pump technology achieving exactly what it was designed to do, that is provide a highly-effective, renewable heating solution tailored specifically for the UK residential market. We are very happy to have been referred on this project and are confident that our heat pump technology chimes in perfectly with the luxury ethos of The Wildflowers development.” Steven Double of Doublequick adds, “I had no hesitation in recommending Stiebel Eltron’s air source heat pump technology to our client, given the quality of the product and its exceptional efficiency. The compact, outdoor installations we have been able to provide have ensured that we don’t impact on the aesthetic appeal of the Wildflowers properties.”

ARES Tec Boilers Help Searle Dry Cooler Testing After Fire

Invis-A-Rack has safety covered for roofing contractor

Alpha Heating Innovation helped Searle at their dry cooler testing centre in Fareham, Hampshire after a fire badly damaged their facility in February 2014. Alpha Heating Innovation helped Searle at their dry cooler testing centre in Fareham, Hampshire after a fire badly damaged their facility in February 2014. When designing their new test centre three months later, Searle realised they would need boilers with varying capacity stages to satisfy Eurovent Certification standards. The ARES Tec boilers are efficient, quiet and have low emissions. The boilers at Fareham heat the system water which goes to the adjoining room to the test units. The test room can get to -40C. The units cool the water and return it to the boilers.

An innovative collapsible pick-up truck cargo management system supplied by Auto Styling Truckman is enabling a roofing contractor to ensure the safe transportation of tools and equipment. Paul Trebble, who along with his team of four staff provides domestic roofing services across South Somerset, upgraded to the Invis-a-Rack racking system when he acquired a new Toyota Hilux Extra Cab. The system, which enables tradespeople to carry ladders and timber at cab level freeing up the truck bed for tools and equipment, replaces a ‘DIY’ version built by Paul for his old Mitsubishi L200. Invis-A-Rack provides a sturdy frame when erected, which can hold up a static load of 220kg.

Tesco Golf Day Raising Money Again

The Tesco Golf Day Players 2015

John Hughes, the energy behind the annual Tesco Golf Day at Greetham Valley in Rutland, once again made the event happen on 22nd October. Thirty-six suppliers to Tesco’s engineering team met in the beautifully sunny golf club L to R: ACR Journal’s James Knight to see the extremes of golfing talent battle it and Will Hawkins, Tony Atkin from Tesco out for the honour of either being the best or worst golfer. Teams from VES, Indigo, Fen-Bay, EMI, Ideal Boilers, Combined Services, IntoHeat, ACR Journal, Carver group, Birchall, EIC, Berrys and Neville Tucker set off into the countryside. Some golfers saw more of the local flora and fauna than other others and chalked up plenty of extra mileage in their search for the ‘ball that was caught by the wind’. Thankfully, the golf buggies were fully charged before the teams set off. They needed all the ‘juice’ available. The buggies were also surprisingly useful for protecting players from stray balls too. On once occasion, having been told to ‘get back’ and away from the intended trajectory by Tesco’s Tony Atkin, the ACR Journal’s James Knight misinterpreted by just how much he needed to get back. Soon, he had Tony’s golf bouncing around within the buggy as if it were an anti-tank round rattling around the inside of a tank seeking targets. Fortunately, James only suffered a mild dose of shock and a grazed elbow. He did produce some fairly agricultural language in the aftermath of the ‘Get Back-Gate’ incident. Tony Atkin and Will Hawkins were concerned with James’ plight for about 3 milliseconds before roaring with laughter. Shane Head from IntoHeat got the raffle going which raised £827 at dinner. With money from the Tesco Golf Day in 2014, John Hughes donated £900 to Diabetes UK. John Hughes (now with EIC) is planning to run the The Birchall Air team won the Tesco golf day in 2016. Keep track of the ACR Journal for Engineering golf competition today. details if you would like to be involved. Great fun day.

Air Conditioning for Youth Radio Station When youth radio station’s young broadcaster got too stuffy in their studio, TechniCool Air Conditioning and Daikin UK came to the rescue with a free air conditioning system installation. Reprezent 107.3FM broadcasts and campaigns on issues affecting young people, such as mental health, housing and youth unemployment from the POPBrixon studios in London. The radio station has helped thousands of their listeners to gain new skills, improve their employability and represents them. The studio is in three refurbished shipping containers and it often became hot and stuffy with the amount of young broadcasters using it. A Daikin team went to see what they could do to help. Daikin worked with TechniCool Air Conditioning to specify and install the right unit for the studios which will work for them all year round. TechniCool’s team installed a 5kW single under ceiling unit which is ideal in confined spaces. The unit distributes air evenly keeping the space at a uniform temperature. Daikin UK MD, Dirk Slagmulder said: “When we heard about Reprezent’s work with young people and the issues they were having with uncontrollable temperatures in the studio, we wanted to help out by giving them an even better climate for success.
