Thank you for four great years Four years ago, this Editor arrived in the cooling industry knowing little about air conditioning or refrigeration beyond what I experienced at home when putting the weekly shop into the fridge. Since then, this industry has shown me nothing but warmth (no pun intended), enthusiasm, and friendliness when I met a wide range of refrigeration and air conditioning professionals. I have learnt a lot. And, I have seen the diversity, innovation and attention to detail of an industry which is largely unseen by the world, but which is vital to many. In my short time in this business, the industry has adapted to marketing itself more online, to new legislation on refrigerants, and to changing political circumstances. On the whole, the people and businesses within it have taken it all within their stride and thrived. It has been impressive to watch and to highlight within the ACR & Heat Pump Journals. This is the last issue I will edit. It has been a pleasure and, perhaps, one of the most enjoyable jobs and industries to work in. I have made friends and got to know many of you. Thank you. Dean & Wood Supports AN ADVENTURE TO ECUADOR Refrigeration and air conditioning wholesaler Dean & Wood, recently supported a student’s humanitarian and conservation expedition to Ecuador
O
livia Hawkins (17) is a student studying maths, philosophy, law and geography at Bedford Sixth Form College. She had a dream to go on an expedition to South America and needed to raise funds to make this happen.
Olivia Hawkins (right)
Every year students travel to developing countries of the world to help local people and communities with projects important to them. Students travel to Ecuador to help prevent deforestation, improve and protect safe drinking water supplies and to protect the local biodiversity. During the expedition students have the opportunity to travel around and explore their host country.
Fund raising activities
However, it is no picnic for students who want to travel to Ecuador on the expedition. Olivia had to raise £5,000 to go on the month-long adventure, which took place in July and August 2016. To raise the money, Olivia organised a range of fund raising activities including bag packs, mufti days, discos, and enterprise days. Working hard to raise the funds for the expedition had secondary benefits for Olivia. “Whilst fundraising, I have also gained a phenomenal amount of life skills and experiences that will be incredibly beneficial to me throughout my future career,” she stated. “Some of these include organisational skills when arranging activities and the use of communication skills whilst organising my events was key to their success.”
More than skills
It was not just new skills that Olivia developed in the build-up to her trip. “My overall confidence has grown remarkably throughout my fundraising experience. I have managed to strengthen my resilience and realised in times of
struggle that I had gone too far to give up. My overall attitude has become more proactive and my drive, determination and enthusiasm has helped me to make the best possible decisions.” Dean & Wood supported Olivia with a donation to her fund for the trip. The wholesaler was impressed by her energy and enthusiasm. Nick Kilner, Head of Dean & Wood, said: “By Dean & Wood helping projects such as Olivia’s, we aim to encourage young people into industry and develop the communication and leadership skills of our future generations.” “You need confidence to organise and raise funds for challenging projects. When people like Olivia succeed it makes them well-rounded individuals who will be ideal candidates for future employment.”
The projects
Olivia started her adventure in Puerto Rico on the Pacific Coast, building a child development centre for three communities containing 600 people. They also built a playground for the local school, helped to plant trees in an environmental centre, as well as cleaning up the villages and nearby beaches. In the next stage, Olivia went to the Galapagos Islands where she snorkelled and swam with dolphins, sharks and turtles. Following this, Olivia was in the mountains 3,800 metres above sea level where she and her group helped to refurbish a school, build an allotment and a community kitchen. In the newly-built kitchen, she learnt to cook local food, including a guinea pig. It would have been an opportunity missed if she had not learnt

to play the panpipes, which she duly did. Finally, Olivia went into the Amazon rainforest where she helped to build a tourist bungalow, toilets for the locals and refurbished a community centre. She also helped to build a playground and learnt carpentry skills. Olivia summed up her trip “This journey has given me an experience of a lifetime. I managed to get so much out of this trip and look forward to many more in the future ” She concluded “Thanks to Dean & Wood, my employability skills have strengthened and I have really come out of my shell. By wearing the Dean & Wood t-shirts during the trip people from Ecuador asked about the company and commented on their generosity and foresight.” “I have improved socially, mentally, and physically. My problem solving and organisational skills have also improved and I have become more appreciative of the way we live and how lucky we are in comparison to others. Not only has the trip given me an unforgettable experience, the fund-raising from planned events and hard work has helped me to reach my goal. “Thank you Dean & Wood for being so supportive and helping me during my journey ”
LG GETS READY TO LAUNCH LATEST VRF SYSTEM LG Electronics, the Korean air conditioning manufacturer, is ready to launch the latest version of its VRF system ini December. The company is launching its Multi 5 air conditioning system which, LG states, is unique’ in the market. The ACR Journal saw the Multi 5 in production last year in Korea at its factory in the south of the country near Busan. The company has been testing and developing the product for months in readiness to launch it in the UK market. Installers, building service engineers and end users learnt about the new version of LG’s RF system in a series of seminars in December. The company also announced a series of new heating, ventilation and air conditioning products available for
2017 at the workshops. The new products include the latest version of its LATSCAD design software which will help engineers meet EN 378 requirements and a demonstration of LG’s service and monitoring tool the LGM .
NEW REFRIGERATION RESOLUTION ANNOUNCED BY CONSUMER GOODS FORUM The organisation representing food retailers and manufacturers, the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), announced renewed commitment among its members to phase out HFC refrigerants. The CGF agreed on a new resolution which calls on companies to rid their business of hydro uorocarbons (HFCs) used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The organisation is striving to meet its goal of helping to reduce global warming. HFCs, the CGF states, make up 1.5 of all warming potential today. Experts believe that HFCs could be between 6% and 9% of all greenhouse gases by 2050 unless urgent steps are taken to eliminate them. The Forum’s resolution has four focuses, namely the installing new refrigeration systems in viable markets, overcoming barriers in markets where installing refrigeration equipment is not viable now, reducing the environmental harm caused by existing refrigeration systems, and developing individual targets and plans to address the first three points. The legislation is very in uential in bringing about change, and the CGF wants to include HFCs in the Montreal Protocol.
Members of CGF have spent the last six years testing new, low carbon refrigeration systems in over 4,000 supermarkets, as well as using natural refrigerants in four million chiller units and industrial refrigeration systems worldwide. The CGF published the results in their ‘Refrigeration Booklet’. Their results appear positive overall with the natural refrigerants. However, the CGF announcement shows that there is still much work to eliminate HFCs from refrigeration systems globally.

INDUSTRY SCHEME MARKS NATIONAL MENTORING DAY Industry veteran, Steve Gill, announced a new mentoring scheme designed for the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump (RACHP) industry called Thermentor.org. National Mentoring Day, 27th October, marks the significant benefit gained by employers and employees from mentoring and a new scheme for the RACHP is to launch. Steve conceived the idea for a mentoring program for the RACHP sector because of industry-wide concern about the lack of young people becoming engineers in the industry. A change of working practices where more people work for small businesses or sole traders means that it is harder to help younger workers learn from more experienced professionals in the RACHP industry. However, Steve Gill is optimistic and sees an opportunity to encourage more young people into the industry through social media, and to mentor them online. Steve ran a pilot scheme earlier in 2016 as part of another project which the participants greeted with enthusiasm. The project ran through two mentoring cycles and was a success. He said about the project “We have run two pilot cycles, so far of twelve weeks duration each. The pilot scheme involved three mentors and eleven mentees. It has been a learning curve for all of us, and we are still learning and improving the programme. We are now confident enough to expand the scope to include some overseas participation and also significantly increase the number of mentors and mentees”. He added that the scheme is not unique to any one industry organisation or body, and the volunteers that started it see the potential and benefits that mentoring can bring.
FUJITSU PARTNERS WITH TF SOLUTIONS ON MIDLANDS TRAINING CENTRE Fujitsu has teamed up with distributor TF Solutions to launch a new air conditioning training centre in Burton-on-Trent. Ian Carroll, Fujitsu’s UK sales and marketing director, said at the opening event: “Training, like every other service we provide, needs to be relevant, current, high quality and most importantly assessable. It is with this last point in mind, that we proud to have listened to the market and opened a training centre that is easier for those in the Midlands and the North to attend.” TF Solutions managing director, Mike Sanderson, opened the new training centre on 19th October with the Institute of Refrigeration President, Steve Gill. The current course range includes an introduction to the Fujitsu product portfolio, installing, commissioning and troubleshooting split and multi-split systems, the Fujitsu service tool, mini VRF installation, commissioning and troubleshooting, VRF system application and design including design simulator, and more. The courses are all free and taught by expert engineers from Fujitsu. They are ideal for design and installation engineers who need to understand the ideal applications for the Fujitsu air conditioning systems.
A GAS COMMENTS ON KIGALI HFC AGREEMENT Commercial director of A Gas, the Bristol-based refrigerant specialists, recently commented on the historic agreement between nations in Kigali, Rwanda, on the phase-down of HFC refrigerants. He said “There has been much coverage in the Media about the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol – also expressed as a phasedown of commonly-used gases in fridges and air conditioners. A-Gas welcomes this historic international agreement and looks forward to its full implementation in all our regions. An orderly HFC phase-down “In all A-Gas regions, Ozone depleting substances (ODS) are regulated under the Montreal Protocol. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol will now include an orderly and gradual phasedown of high GWP virgin HFC products under a
very similar framework. The United Nations see the original Montreal Protocol as the most successful international treaty negotiated and implemented in history – regardless of subject matter – so the inclusion of HFCs is a valuable addition. “We were expecting the inclusion of HFCs into the Montreal Protocol and have worked towards this outcome over an extended period.” Good Business News “We believe that the Kigali Amendment is overwhelmingly good news for our business and will help strengthen and grow A-Gas across all our regions as well as bringing new and exciting business opportunities. Robust international environmental policies together with the necessary level of enforcement are key drivers in the success of A-Gas worldwide. With this latest announcement we see this continuing to grow for many years to come.” CMYKCMYK / .ai / .ai CMYK / .ai

SPREADING
the Word
Project on innovation in food refrigeration energy storage kicks off with a visit to Frigologix in Belgium
T
he IOR is helping to get the message out about the opportunities for cold store and food processing plant owners from a new European project called CryoHub. The IOR is working closely with a team of international researchers to disseminate the project results as they are developed. This EU-funded project will be developing large-scale cryogenic energy storage at refrigerated warehouses and food factories. It uses an innovative technology based on storing renewable energy as a cryogenic liquid - which in the case of this project is liquid air. This cryogen is then boiled at very low temperatures to generate electricity for on-site use or feeding the power grid during peak demand periods. The cooling effect of boiling the cryogen is used to refrigerate industrial facilities. The research project which includes development of a live test site started in April 2016 and will run for four years. It is part of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme and is being managed by a collaborative team of 14 organisations from the UK, Belgium, Bulgaria, France and Spain.
in frozen and chilled food in Belgium and France, was proud to welcome the team to his site: “We were very pleased to host the visit of the CryoHub team at our site in Lommel and to show them around the site. We are very keen to explore how we might work with this key innovative research project. We share common goals of reducing energy demand and one important way to do this is to be able to store energy at times of surplus thus cutting costs and importantly reducing carbon emissions” The project is being co-ordinated by London South Bank University’s Judith Evans FInstR. Judith expressed the teams thanks for the interesting tour of the Frigologix site: “We are grateful to Frigologix for hosting this visit and for showing us around their plant and sharing their plans for the future. The unique combination of food processing, storage and energy generation would make this an ideal site to demonstrate the unique
CryoHub technology under development as part of the project and we will be following up on this possibility with Reinier and his team in the future” Finding a suitable technology demonstrator site is one of the key stages of development for the CryoHub Project. Other elements of the project include: Mapping energy demand and renewable energy supply in Europe in order to evaluate the present and future potential of cryogenic energy storage in relevant refrigeration sectors. Identifying how stored cryogenic cold and waste heat could be integrated Evaluate the carbon and energy savings possible compared to conventional facilities Produce a strategy for energy saving in the European food refrigeration sector. If you are interested in following the project developments see www.cryohub.eu and sign up for our newsletter.

WITH AIRSOURCE Will Hawkins went to visit the Manchester-based company and met its Managing Director, Dave Clayton, to learn more about this growing heating, cooling and ventilation business
W
hen you visit a company called ‘AirSource’ in the heating and cooling industry, the immediate thought about what it does is heat pumps, as in air source heat pumps. Heat pumps are a big part of the solutions developed by AirSource, but the company works on a range of bespoke solutions to help its customers keep their employees comfortable. AirSource operates in several sectors including schools, law courts and football stadiums, as well as office buildings. When Dave and his partners, Andrew and Alex Pinchbeck, started out in 2010, among them the team had a long history in the industry. Andrew focused on the engineering, Alex the sales and Dave managed the business, which matched their skills and experience.
Rapid growth
The team set out to differentiate themselves by providing the type of service many large companies find difficult to manage. They were doing what they had done before, namely designing and building air handling units. Being a small firm means you have more time to attend to your customers. AirSource won their first order within a week of starting. To make the order into a reality, Dave hired three employees, all of whom were unemployed, trained them, and bought a second-hand punching machine to get them going. The new team put the solution together and had invoiced their first 40,000 within twelve weeks of starting up. AirSource outgrew its factory within 18 months, followed by another move into a 13,000 sq ft premises nearby.
Soon, the team realised there was a bigger demand for systems using heat pumps which competitors were
not fulfilling. They were already making packaged units that used heat pumps, as well as air handling units. AirSource developed their production to meet the demand. As a result, Andrew, Alex and Dave invested in more into research and development on better compressors and controllers for their systems.
Cool for school AirSource directors (l to r): Dave Clayton, Alex Pinchbeck, ?????????
One of their latest products is the ClassAir system which they designed specifically for classrooms. It is a fresh air ventilation system which helps students concentrate better by using ‘free cooling’ from outside air and heat recovery. Aside from the proper ventilation in the classroom, they are cheap to run. AirSource’s TempAir products use renewable energy to provide heating, cooling and ventilation. The company provides for bespoke applications with its ‘CustomAir’, which they adapt to specific needs. Dave told me they sell most of their solutions to UK customers. However, they see an export opportunity when they have standardised their products. I asked Dave about how the Brexit result would affect them. With the pragmatism of a businessman, Dave said: “It is important for us to show now that we have great products based on sound engineering.” I asked Dave about why they are different to their competitors. “People come to us for straighttalking, advice and solutions. Technically, customers like the fact that we make the system controls based on their exact needs. Added to that, we then provide customers great support.” It seems like AirSource has a winning formula. They recently won Salford’s SME Business of the Year too.

Employers Comments I have known Joshua since he became a first year student apprentice at SCT at the age of 16. At this age apprentice engineers tend to be immature and short on general skills and life experience. It’s fair to say that Josh was outside of this generalisation. He appears to have worked incredibly hard to gain the respect of his fellow colleagues, including his lie Manager and mentor. He is of smart appearance, keen to learn and asks challenging questions. HIGHLIGHTS The 2016 Chillventa show had one strong theme with new products, namely new refrigerants with low global warming potentials. In an industry which has refrigerants and compressors at its core, it was no surprise.
T
here were some other interesting developments too, including a Swiss cooling solution which uses air as the refrigerant. And, a virtual factory tour. Read the highlights of this year’s show in Nuremberg.
Bitzer publishes 19th Refrigerant Guide
Bitzer, the German compressor manufacturer, has released its latest refrigerant report. The guide is Bitzer’s 19th edition of the report which is popular in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry who need to understand the implications and uses of new refrigerants. The pace of change in the industry, as a result of new legislation on refrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP), makes it difficult for engineers to keep up which gases to use in applications. Bitzer’s report helps engineers and specifiers understand the range of low GWP refrigerants and where to use them in different systems and applications. The report guides readers through existing and future HFC substitutes, including detailed descriptions. Download the guide for free here or from the Bitzer website www.bitzer.de
Chemours Adds New Low GWP Refrigerants to Range
Chemicals manufacturer, Chemours, is adding to its range of low global warming potential refrigerants in its Opteon L portfolio. The products are for the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. The A2L (mildly ammable) refrigerants allow for higher charge sizes than other refrigerants with a higher ammability. The refrigerants are based on hydro uoro-olefin (HFO) technology and have similar properties, and higher performance, in most cases, than the hydro uorocarbons (HFCs) they replace. There are five refrigerants in the Opteon XL range, namely Opteon XL10 (an R134a replacement), Opteon XL20 and XL40 (which replace R22 and R404A 507), and Opteon XL41 & XL55 (replacing R410A). OpteonXL10 (R-1234yf) replaces R134a and has a GWP of less than 1. Chemours states it is a replacement for ‘new equipment designs’. Engineers
should use them in positive displacement, direct expansion medium temperature commercial and industrial applications. Opteon L20 (R-454C) replaces R404A and R407C refrigerants in new equipment designs. It has a GWP of 14 . Chemours designed it for positive displacement, direct expansion low- and mediumtemperature commercial and industrial applications. Because it is under the 150 threshold value in F-Gas legislation 517/2014 and Eco-design, the refrigerant is ideal for hermetically-sealed systems. Opteon L40 (R-454A) in an R404A replacement and has a GWP of 238. Engineers should use the coolant in positive displacement, direct expansion low- and mediumtemperature commercial and industrial applications. Opteon XL41 (R-454B) has a GWP of 4 7 and replaces R410A in new systems. Its applications include positive displacement, direct expansion air conditioning, heat pump and chiller applications. Finally, Opteon XL55 (R-452B) has a GWP of 7 , and it replaces R410A, but has design compatibility with R410A equipment and lower 2L ammability properties’. Use the refrigerant in positive displacement, direct expansion air conditioning, heat pump and chiller applications. www.chemours.com As a first trial, Lowe Rental Ltd., a world leading provider of rental refrigeration equipment to major food exhibitions, events, producers, and retailers across the world, used Opteon™ XL20 in a chilled drinks cabinet designed for R-404A to see if was a suitable replacement. The charge size was approximately 350 g. Picture: Lowe Rental Ltd.

Honeywell Launches New Low GWP Refrigerant for Plug-In and Condensing Unit Applications
New Honeywell iOS app for understanding high GWP refrigerant replacements
Honeywell released a new iPhone and iPad app at Chillventa to help air conditioning and refrigeration engineers compare high and low GWP refrigerants, and understand their properties. The app, the ‘Honeywell Refrigerant Selection Tool EU’, will help engineers understand a refrigerant’s capacity, efficiency or global warming potential.
The app has built-in refrigerant tables to help engineers understand how much refrigerant to use in a system. Also, users can find authorised Honeywell refrigerant dealers to help them comply with F GAs regulations. Find Honeywell’s new app on Google Play or iTunes and download it for free.
Refrigerant and chemicals manufacturer, Honeywell has a new, low global warming potential refrigerant designed for medium and low-temperature standalone applications. Solstice L40 (R455A) is an A2L refrigeration which will have broad appeal in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry because of its suitability for use in small charge, plug-in type cabinets, condensing units, monoblocs for cold rooms and freezer rooms, small & large chillers and heat pumps. Honeywell’s new product has a GWP of 14 (9 lower than R404A), which means it is lower than the F-Gas regulations ban on refrigerants with a GWP of 150 in airtight container applications. Solstice L40X, Honeywell claims, provides up to 3% higher capacity, and up to more efficiency at low temperature than R404A. On ammability, the refrigerant is lower risk than propane, for example. These HFO (Hydro uoroolefin) refrigerants will be around for decades, as stated by Honeywell who have invested $900 million in developing them. With that, Honeywell believes they are a good, long-term investment for companies who to be both environmentally friendly and efficient.

HIGHLIGHTS Mirai Intex Launches Air as Refrigerant HVACR Systems
Swiss form, Mirai Intex, revealed new heating and cooling systems which use air as the refrigerant. The company showed two products aimed at the heating, ventilation and air conditioning and refrigeration markets at the show. Neither of the systems use any refrigerants, such as Freons or ammonia; they only use air as the refrigerant. The products use an ‘air-cycle’ system. And, they use super-precision’ ball bearings which decrease the friction so much that there is no need for oil to lubricate them. The company says this also means the unit are very low maintenance and cheaper to run. The MIRAI Climate’ system comes in two models, namely the 2500 and 5000 units. The units don’t need big, external sources of heat or cold, such as condensers or chillers. Use the units for heating, cooling and ventilation. Mirai Intex says they can cut the cost of air conditioning premises by 2 to 3 times because of their efficiency and high-speed output. The firm says their systems are ideal for buildings such as theatres, concert halls or restaurants, for example. Public buildings, such as schools and gyms, will be able to use them. The units don’t recycle air which makes them ideal for hospitals, clean rooms or clinics too. The MIRAI COLD refrigeration unit has a temperature range of between minus 40 degrees C and minus 80 degrees C. This makes it ideal for cold rooms in the food or biomedical industries. The control interface is intuitive, and the ‘Mirai Climate’ control unit is accessible via an iPhone, iPad or Android app. Find out more here: www.mirai-intex.ch DECEMBER/JANUARY 2017

HIGHLIGHTS
Touring the Sanhua Factory, Virtually
Visiting factories show you a lot about a business. Sanhua gave visitors to their stand at Chillventa to step into a virtual factory tour of their plant in China using a headset. At first, it was an unnerving experience to take a 360-degree tour while standing stock-still. You could see workers on the production line making the company’s valves, sensors, filters, compressors, or heat exchangers. And, you were almost looking over some of their shoulders while they worked, which felt like an intrusion. However, the virtual tour showed an impressive operation with products moving through its clean, high-tech. It also took you outside to see views of Zhejiang where the company bases itself. What’s more impressive is when you realise how essential Sanhua’s products are for many air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump solutions in the market. It is safe to say that Sanhua is part of a vast majority of products on the market today. The family owned company is developing its business in the UK and has reached an annual turnover of around £1 million in the four years it has worked in the country. Although made in China, Sanhua distributes its products in Europe from Poland to manufacturers and wholesalers.
Chinese-made products often face scrutiny about their quality compared to products made in developed countries. But, Sanhua’s failure rate’ over the last two years is small. According to their spokesperson, it has been 50 parts per million, or tiny. The company follows ISO procedures and standards, like any other manufacturer with high standards. Sanhua is focusing on products that use CO2 and R290 (Propane) for large commercial and small industrial plants, respectively. Their core business is reversing, electronic, ball and solenoid valves. Sanhua helps its customers with technical support based in Europe, as well as tools like sizing apps for engineers. Find their Selection Tool’ app on Google Play or iTunes. www.sanhuaeurope.com/en

AMMONIA OFFERS A GREEN ALTERNATIVE A-Gas Managing Director John Ormerod on how this natural refrigerant is growing in popularity due its low GWP, excellent thermodynamic properties and high efficiencies
T
here are three telling reasons to choose ammonia as an alternative to more commonly used industrial refrigerants. First of all, ammonia is a natural refrigerant which does not deplete the ozone layer. Secondly, it has excellent thermodynamic qualities and thirdly, it has a recognisable odour which can be viewed as its greatest safety asset. Ammonia has been used in the refrigeration industry for more than a century and its contribution to cooling has not gone unrecognised. But the latest raft of F-Gas Regulations, with the demise of high GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants firmly in their sights, are now provoking an increase in popularity for this green refrigerant among engineers and end users. It is very much to its advantage that it doesn’t have a GWP which places it conveniently beyond the reach of the F-Gas Regulations.
Increasing Applications for Ammonia
Contractors have long acknowledged that it is a hard-working refrigerant and one that offers good value for money but advances in technology mean that it can
John Ormerod
be used across a wider range of operating temperatures. This in turn is opening it up for use in an increasing number of different applications. Ammonia is highly toxic and ammable in certain concentrations which mean it does have to be handled with care and its application has to be looked at differently when compared to other industrial refrigerants. That aside, it has been the number one

choice for many industrial systems. In applying this, designers have looked to keep the ammonia aspect of the system away from people and manage the risk by doing so. But technology has moved on rapidly in this area in recent years and we are starting to see low-charge ammonia systems entering the market and widening its reach further.
Reducing Ammonia Risks
Improvements in technology involving heat exchangers, compressor controls, low pressure receivers and the like, have allowed the charge size to be reduced to as small a quantity as possible – again lowering the risk. Now a common sight, are small packaged ammonia systems sitting on roofs of buildings with secondary refrigerants like glycols employed to take care of the cooling aspect. In these instances, by placing the ammonia package on the roof, you have contained the risk quite nicely.
Versatile Ammonia
Ammonia has many applications in industrial facilities including meat, poultry, fish, dairy, ice cream, brewing and soft drink plants. It has also been successfully employed in large cold stores in the food processing industry where the scale and range of cooling enormous. This new-found versatility has won ammonia more admirers. Improving technology and greater efficiencies have broadened the number of applications where it can be used to such an extent that some supermarkets have warmed to its potential.
CO2 and Ammonia
Glycols are a secondary refrigerant familiar to many but times are a changing and even CO2 has been used in cascade with ammonia. I have heard of an application in South Africa where ammonia and carbon dioxide have been combined for cooling at a convenience store. To my mind, if that doesn't highlight how ammonia has widened its appeal to end-users and signalled that it’s a gas for the future, nothing will.
increased emphasis on safety. I would recommend talking to your specialist training provider about this if you are looking to upskill.
A Gas and Ammonia
Wider Temperature Range
Ammonia has impressive thermodynamic properties and can be used at very low temperatures, in some instances down to -40°C, which makes it a special refrigerant. Its energy efficiency track record is good too and it has been proved that it can make a significant difference to electricity bills. Ammonia’s distinct odour can be detected by the human nose even at very low concentrations and this is a helpful warning sign in the rare event that all is not as it should be.
New, Attainable Skills for Ammonia For engineers it does require a slightly different skill set but for most competent contractors this is a bridge that they should be able to cross comfortably. In the main, the differences revolve around the need for steel pipe systems because of the added corrosion element and an
For many years Ammonia was missing from the A-Gas product range but it has now been added to further develop our one stop shop offering. It is not an off-the-shelf product but it is an environmentally-friendly alternative to high GWP refrigerants with its great thermodynamic properties and impressive energy efficiencies. I predict that the resurgence of ammonia as an environmentally-friendly alternative to HFC refrigerants will continue as the F-Gas Regulations tighten their grip on the industry and the Rwanda agreement point us towards a greener future.

Honeywell Solstice Helps
ITS CLIMATE RESILIENCE STRATEGY ASDA is one of the best-known brands in the UK and is a subsidiary of Walmart, the world’s largest private sector employer. The company is at the forefront of sustainability within its sector. Asda met its ambitious energy and carbon footprint goals in 2015.
The Solution
ASDA was introduced to Solstice N40 at the beginning of 2013 and, in keeping with its strategy of continuous evaluation of new lower GWP refrigerants, started a Brian Churchyard, Senior Manager – formal test of R-448A in MT Construction Model & Lifecycle (medium temperature) and ASDA, United Kingdom LT (low temperature) systems at its trial store in Leeds. The conversion was easy and problem-free, and both systems operated awlessly, with no discharge mitigation required for the EVI Copeland scroll compressor. After 18 months of successful testing, ASDA sought to verify the performance of Solstice N40 at a fully operational store in Hunts Cross, Liverpool.
“Our focus on sustainability has seen us reduce our environmental impact. It also means we’ve saved money for our business, our suppliers’ businesses and our customers.”
The Benefits
N
ow, Asda is committed to a climate resilience strategy. That plan aims to reduce waste and harm to the environment through the trialling and implementation of new technologies, such as LED lighting and innovations in refrigeration, to help stores operate more sustainably.
It was in this context that ASDA embarked upon a trial of Honeywell’s low GWP refrigerant Solstice N40 (R-448A) in partnership with CBES – one of the UK’s leading providers of energy reduction solutions in the retail environment.
The Need Reduce ASDA’s environmental impact and operating costs more for the benefit of customers and wider stakeholders. Evaluate the effectiveness of Solstice N40 as a lower GWP solution for the company’s refrigeration requirements. Prove the performance of Solstice N40 in a store environment using two identical MT systems to enable accurate comparison with R-407A and R-407F.
ASDA uses Resource Data Management controllers and Energy ICT monitoring software in all their stores, enabling precise energy measurement and control of the equipment. Data covering the year-long operation of Solstice N40 at the Hunts Cross trial demonstrated to ASDA that Solstice N40 is the lowest GWP, non- ammable, direct replacement for R-404A and R-407A, exhibiting significant benefits regarding energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction Easy conversion process – a direct replacement for R-407A and R-404A GWP reduction of 65% versus R-404A, 34% versus R-407A and 24% versus R-407F 5-10 higher energy efficiency than R-404A Outstanding performance metrics linked to temperature, cost of operation and overall Coefficient of Performance

ASDA – Improving Sustainability through Commitment and Innovation
The supermarket sector is a heavy user of refrigeration systems, and ASDA has been at the forefront of mitigating the impact of the cooling system on the environment over many years. In 2007, the company committed to reducing its leakage rate from 20 to 8 by 2015 and not only achieved this four years ahead of time, but it also cut the leakage rate to 7. . Moreover, the stores built by ASDA since 2007 have recorded an average leakage rate of only 3. . The result of this continuous focus on sustainable operation and innovation is a significant reduction in energy consumed to run refrigeration systems and a 50 improvement in carbon emissions vs. a 2005 base. It has achieved these impressive outcomes in part through the support of specialist partner CBES Constructive Solutions, which continually evaluates innovations, particularly in the areas of energy savings and carbon reduction, and provides industry-leading refrigeration systems.
Introducing ASDA to Solstice N40 (R-448A)
CBES introduced ASDA to Honeywell’s Solstice N40 in 2013. A formal test followed involving Medium (MT) and Low Temperature (LT) systems. After 18 months of positive results, ASDA decided to convert an existing MT system in its Hunts Cross store and compare performance with an identical MT system running R-407A. A dedicated team oversaw the trial and ensured the project was robust. The team included ASDA’s Head of Refrigeration, its
Energy Manager, and representatives from Honeywell, CBES Constructive Solutions, City Holdings and BJA Consulting Engineers. CBES replaced the MT R-407A refrigerant with 150 kg of Solstice N40 in a configuration comprising Frostpack Rooftop MT system with 8 x B45 Copeland scroll compressors 77kW identical connected loads Identical pipework design and layout ASDA ran the field trial over a full year, and evaluation of the data collected by the project team confirmed the impressive results of the direct replacement refrigerant, including improved energy efficiency, a reduction in direct emissions over R-404A of 5 and 34 lower GWP vs. R-407A. It was also established that superheat setting could be widened to C on the trial system. The Hunts Cross trial demonstrated that Solstice N40 is the lowest GWP, nonammable direct replacement for R-404A on the market, outperforming all other blends in combined energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction. “Solstice N40 gave us no real surprises, in that it did pretty much what we expected. It is a good refrigerant with similar performance to R-407F - considered as best in class and specified in all new Asda stores but with even lower GWP.” John Conner, Commissioner Engineer CBES Simulation Software
Solstice N40 (R-448A)
Solstice N40 is an HFO blend proven to deliver outstanding results across key metrics linked to energy efficiency, temperature, the cost of operation and overall Coefficient of Performance
(COP). It can be used for new commercial refrigeration installations and also to retrofit existing R-404A, R-507, R-407A and R-22 systems. The refrigerant is a next generation innovation offering low levels of GWP and follows on from the development of Honeywell’s Genetron Performax LT (R-407F), the most satisfactory and industry-accepted replacement for R404A and R407A. Solstice N40 possesses 5-10 higher energy efficiency than R-404A and its GWP of 1273 is 5 lower than R-404A and 34 lower than R-407A.
“The successful trial at Hunts Cross proved to us that the new Honeywell HFO based refrigerant Solstice N40 will further reduce energy consumption in our refrigeration systems, when compared to R-404A and, due to its lower GWP, will also help to minimise further ASDA’s carbon footprint. This is another step towards improved sustainability.” Brian Churchyard, Senior Manager – Construction Model & Lifecycle ASDA, United Kingdom

WOMEN in the
ACR industry F U J I T S U
This month, the ACR Journal interviewed 3 ladies from Fujitsu, Kelly Bullivant - Product & Marketing Co-ordinator, Rachel Elliot - Customer Service Supervisor (Units) and Reshma Jobanputra– Customer Service Supervisor (spares). They take turns to answer the questions below. Rachel Elliot, Reshma Jobanputra, Kelly Bullivant
Education: Where did you study and what diploma/ degree did you gain?
Kelly Bullivant: I studied textile design in the past. Unrelated I know to this industry but it just goes to show how people from diverse backgrounds and educational routes can still use their skills productively and creatively.
Details of current employer (or own business), including location.
Reshma Jobanputra: I have been working here since 2013. Fujitsu is one of the largest manufacturers of Air Conditioning Units in the world. They are now one of the leading suppliers of air-conditioning equipment in the UK.
What attracted you to the industry?
Reshma Jobanputra: I have always strived to take on a challenging job, be it in any industry. Fujitsu gave me the opportunity and motivation to start-off as a customer service administrator, and then working my way up to my current position of Customer Service Supervisor. I didn’t know anything about the industry before I joined Fujitsu but I am very glad that I.

What do you specialise in now? Or, what type of projects do you work on?
Rachel Elliot: I was recently promoted to Customer service supervisor for units. I took over from Kelly when she moved into her marketing role. I oversee the unit’s side of the team and I work very closely with Distributors and our VRF team to ensure that all the large scale VRF projects run smoothly and are completed on time. I have national responsibility for order fulfilment and stock imports.
What do you know now about the industry which you wished you had known before?
Kelly Bullivant: I wish I had known just how quickly everything evolves and develops in the industry. It feels like there is continual innovation and change. With developments due to refrigerant change and improving energy efficiency nothing is staying still. I had no idea before I joined the industry just how dynamic it is.
What excites/interests you about the industry and your part in it now?
Kelly Bullivant: The people I find this industry is full of lovely, helpful and friendly people; both inside the company but also our Distributors and customers. I also am excited by how this industry is growing and continually changing. We are seeing more young people joining the industry and the company. We as a company are also playing our role in
supporting this by supplying equipment going into colleges and training centres. We also work alongside our customers to support their charities whenever possible which is doubly rewarding.
What would you say to other women who are considering coming into the ACR industry?
Rachel Elliot: This is a really friendly industry and not stuffy at all. I would say that if you like dealing with people then this is the industry for you. It has technical demands of course, and there is a lot to learn, but the people make it special so I would say don’t hesitate to join if you have the opportunity.
Where do you see your career developing?
RE: I would like to develop my management skills and progress down this route. I have been supported and encouraged by my colleagues and senior staff to develop these skills. The company is large enough to enable me to see that I will be given opportunities to accept responsibility and become more customer facing.
What are the challenges of this industry? Kelly Bullivant: Changes to environmental legislation resulting in new refrigerants being introduced and pushing the drive to ever more energy efficient units. BRE IT has also created uncertainty in the business world and we have yet to see how this will pan out.
What are the benefits of being in your role (e.g. travelling, variety, monetary?)
Reshma Jobanputra: My biggest motivator is being a people person. I love to go the ‘extra mile’ for every customer. This is more satisfying than anything else I could ask for. My role here at Fujitsu enables me to help customers and deal with people. I continually strive to go above and beyond in terms of customer service and this role motives me to do just that. Kelly Bullivant: For me it is learning new skills, and also getting to travel. I get to meet many interesting people and I like that my work is non-routine and never repetitive. It’s great to part of a company that is growing and that has progressed so much over the past few years. Rachel Elliot: I have been given an opportunity to develop. Fujitsu are a wonderful company to work for and they bring out the best in people. I like the variety and the opportunity to grow and develop my career.

INNOVATIVE HYBRID AIR CONDITIONING
A
new 250-bedroom hotel has become the rst in the U to use an innovative hybrid air conditioning technology that removes the need to install leak detection equipment in occupied rooms.
The Holiday Inn Express Birmingham City Centre in central Birmingham is using Mitsubishi Electric’s Hybrid VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system to keep guests comfortable in a controllable, energy efficient way, whilst still offering the full exibility of design and installation that VRF air conditioning is synonymous with.
WE NEEDED RELIABLE AND EFFECTIVE AIR CONDITIONING THAT IS EASY TO USE FROM THE GUEST’S PERSPECTIVE BUT WHICH IS ALSO MORE COST EFFECTIVE FOR THE HOTEL MOVING FORWARD AS IT REMOVES THE ANNUAL MAINTENANCE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH A LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM”

“We needed reliable and effective air conditioning that is easy to use from the guest’s perspective but which is also more cost effective for the hotel moving forward as it removes the annual maintenance costs associated with a leak detection system”, explained Mark Foster, Managing Director of Centre Island, which will manage the hotel. “The added advantage of using Mitsubishi Electric equipment is that we can control the whole system centrally, which minimises energy use for the business whilst still allowing guests to have individual control within their rooms. This also ensures we can stop rooms being heated or cooled when they are empty”.
“
AC without Leak Detection Costs
The design for the air conditioning system was put together by SISK Design and Build Contractors who worked with Building Services Consultancy DW Pointer. Together they committed to providing a RF system that did not need the significant cost of adding leak detection units in all of the bedrooms. “We proposed Hybrid RF as it completely removes leak detection in occupied spaces whilst still offering the exibility of a RF system,” said Brian Inett of John Sisk & Son. “We were already aware of the Hybrid system and had been looking for a suitable project to use it on, so this was an

ideal solution for the client, especially as it does away with the annual costs of leak detection maintenance.” The 18-storey hotel in Holliday Street, Birmingham, which was designed by Liverpool-based KKA Architecture, will use 1 outdoor condensing units to operate 250 slim ducted indoor units in a clever design that has one outdoor unit serving one wing on each of two oors to minimise the refrigerant pipework within the building. “Hybrid RF uses water to transfer heating and cooling around the building, which removes the need for refrigerant leak detection in occupied spaces,” said Dennis Winter of installer Dragon Air Conditioning Ltd. “But there are also other benefits to the project as the system is being installed in phases which matches the way the hotel is being built.” The hotel, which is to open in April 2017 will employ around 0 people when complete and forms part of the Arena Central redevelopment scheme in Birmingham City Centre which will also be home to the new HSBC headquarters. “There are a lot of hotels that are now coming to terms with how to keep guests comfortable whilst complying with new legislation on refrigerants and leak detection,” explained Mitsubishi Electric’s Mark Grayston Senior Product Manager for RF & Hybrid RF. “This is why we have developed the Hybrid RF system and this new development points the way to delivering the highest levels of guest comfort without adding significantly to install and maintenance costs.”

Gree stops restaurant customers from Frying When long-time fish and chip man Bob Arneil found a converted car showroom on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, he knew he had found the ideal place for his first mainland traditional fish and chip shop and restaurant for many years. However, to make it work, he needed the help of Gree UK and refrigeration and air conditioning contractor Coolmark.
T
he problem was that one of the things that attracted Bob to the Crosshils, Keithley site in the rst place, the former showroom’s three glass walls), meant the temperature in the restaurant, which he renamed the Trawlerman, was putting o his customers.
Hot, No Matter What
“The former owners converted the building into a restaurant in 2011 and spent a lot of money, but it did not work,” said Bob. “When we bought it we realised straight away that one of the problems was that, even in October, on a sunny day it was too warm and it would be boiling in summer. Usually, customers like to sit near the windows, but no-one did here. It was evident we needed air conditioning.” Bob turned to Coolmark, which had already installed his new walk-in freezer, and recommended Gree on the grounds of performance, efficiency and cost effectiveness. Coolmark Director, Mark Kenyon, said: “To cope with the massive solar gain from all the glass in the 2,250 sq ft, 125 cover restaurant, we knew we would need some serious power, with carefully sited indoor units. “We decided the best option was a Gree VR5 VRF outdoor unit and four Gree 7.5kW ceiling cassettes. We chose Gree after researching the offerings from a number of manufacturers and Gree won on a number of criteria, including cost and build quality. The people at Gree UK were also extremely helpful throughout. “Because of the size of the restaurant
Bob Arneil
and the differences in temperature near the windows, we installed four remote wired control pads, so each cassettes temperature, fan speed and louvre direction could be set independently to offer the optimum comfort in each quadrant of the room. “This fully controllable design will also be a significant advantage when it comes to providing heating for customers in the winter if they sit around entrance doors or, again next to the windows. “The location of the outdoor unit was a bit of a challenge. The roof was not suitable and, of course, we only had one wall to choose from, which was mostly metal cladding. Because of concerns about possible vandalism in a secluded and easily accessible area, mounting it

on the ground was not feasible, so the only option was to mount it through the wall to the concrete edge of the mezzanine oor.” Bob added: “The customers think it is brilliant, especially the ones who knew it from before. It will also be perfect for the heating it can provide in the real winter months, as glass lets the heat out as quickly as it lets it in and traps it. It was worth the cost.”
Expansion Plans
Bob, who already owns and runs the Ramsey Trawlerman on the Isle of Man, has been selling fish and chips for 37 years, starting in Barnsley in 1979 and running some outlets throughout Yorkshire and the Northwest, until he moved to the Isle of Man in 1992. This year, he decided he wanted to

expand back into England again, so he began looking for a location in a big fish and trip area that was not on the High Street and therefore subject to lots of competition. The Trawlerman serves traditional fish and chips and pies, but also more innovative steamed salmon with salad, and a sharing platter of mac ‘n’ cheese sticks, spicy mozzarella sticks, scampi,
chicken goujons and fish goujons. It also serves a three-course meal for 9.50 and senior meal for pensioners for just .00 comprising of fish, chips peas, tea or coffee, bread and butter. Bob concluded: “With our new menu, air conditioning and complete modernisation our business has taken off, and we are three times busier than the previous owners.”

LARGE HEAT PUMPS ARE THE ONLY SCALABLE RENEWABLE HEATING TECHNOLOGY CAPABLE OF BECOMING ZERO CARBON BY 2050 Renewable experts are urging energy users to invest in renewable heating technology for the future while government incentives to support the uptake of heat pumps last.
I
ndustrial sized district heat pumps, which draw warmth from the air, rivers, lakes, the sea and the ground are expected to play a fundamental role in achieving COP21 carbon reduction targets. Why? Because “they are the only proven, viable technology capable of delivering zero carbon heat in a large scale”, attendees at The Future of Thermal Energy Conference heard.
Hosted by Warwick University 10-11 October 2016, the Future of Thermal Energy Conference emphasised the importance of the UK government’s DECEMBER/JANUARY 2017

new focus on decarbonising heat. A compelling line-up of experts in the field also examined the positive impact driving forward investment in low-carbon renewable energy will have on the UK economy and the wider industry.
A long term solution
Moving away from combustion technologies will help current policies get back on track to meet the UK’s carbon commitments. Jonathan Graham, head of policy for The Association for Decentralised Energy, differentiated between technologies that save CO2 in the medium-term such as Gas CHP and those that fully integrate with the grid’s natural de-carbonisation progression, making heat pumps a long-term and potentially zero carbon solution. For Trevor Whittaker of Aqualor, who took installation and operational costs into account, heat pumps are also a financially sound solution, “heat pumps have higher installation cost than a gas CHP but much lower operational costs at only 4% of CapEx and will last well beyond 20 years”.
Nicky Cowan, Technical Engineer from Star Renewable Energy, highlighted some incentives and benefits heat pumps offer: “Proven renewable heating technologies that avoid burning gas, particularly large district heat pumps, are becoming one of the most talked about topics for governments and increasingly recognised as the best way to combat climate change. “We have shown efficiencies far more than those used to model energy systems. This system and the rapidly decarbonised electricity grid show why big heat pumps to be a solid performer now that only get even better as the grid totally decarbonises. “According to the Committee on Climate Change, heating may have to almost entirely decarbonise if the UK is to hit its long-term goal of an 80% reduction in emissions by 5050”.
Heat investment
As well as the decarbonisation of heating technologies by 2050, all new investment in heating will have to be zero carbon by 2035 to meet the ambitious target.
“
“WE CAN RIGHT NOW TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE DECARBONISED GRID AT 350G/KWH OF CO2 EQUIVALENT, DEPLOY HEAT PUMPS OVER 350% EFFICIENT AND REDUCE EMISSIONS VERSUS GAS BY OVER 50% - NOW!”
For now, the Committee on Climate Change has already identified a gap of approximately 100 MtCO2e between the possible reductions from current plans and the cuts required by the fifth carbon budget. In recognising this shortfall, the government has committed to come up with an emissions reduction plan’ to address decarbonising of heat, later this year. Dave Pearson, Director of Star Renewable Energy, said “Despite ignoring the cooling opportunities from large heat pumps and using quite pessimistic efficiencies, Government research shows the future heating demand will be mostly met by heat pumps. “While gas being very cheap and electricity taxed more heavily are counter productive, the RHI makes heat pumps a future proof investment. Universities and large estates such as airports have focussed on electrical decarbonisation mostly ignoring heating and cooling. “When the government support of the RHI ceases beyond 2021, they will have to invest in the technology but with no financial assistance. The only barrier is a likely strengthening of the grid. “However, it is not as simple as some show it with high gas use vs. much lower electrical supply. Both lines on the chart have peaks and troughs. Both have efficiencies not yet realised freeing up capacity and, so while there might be local constraints, overall the bottleneck is far ahead.
“We can right now take advantage of the decarbonised grid at 350g kWh of CO2 equivalent, deploy heat pumps over 350 efficient and reduce emissions versus gas by over 50 - now ”
Central to decarbonisation
Thomas Nowak, Secretary General of the European Heat Pump Association, added “We know that heating and cooling are responsible for 50% of the energy demand used in Europe, today. We also know that heat pumps can efficiently provide both at the same time. Realistically, the only logical conclusion is that heat pumps become a central part of the decarbonisation of the system to deliver COP21 carbon targets”. Designed for business and large states, as well as the energy and university sectors, The Future of Thermal Energy Conference, boasted a packed programme of specialists and experts. A resounding message from the event was the importance of decarbonising heat and investment in lowcarbon renewable energy. Topics covered included Bringing heat into the equation’, Transitioning Infrastructure’ and How to Deliver Large Projects’. It also addressed the impact heating has on the UK’s ability to meet the 2020 and 2030 climate change goals, as well as the goals set out in COP21.

Ecodan cascade heat pumps work IN HYBRID SITUATION WITH OIL BOILER Heating a Georgian country house in rural Shropshire was costing a small fortune in fuel for the owner, but there were also limits on how much improvement you can make to the thermal properties of the Grade II listed property.
O
riginally built in 1794, Henlle Hall, in Gobowen near Oswestry is the home of Cosmo Lloyd and his family who have developed the grounds of the estate into a unique, award-winning, and relaxing country retreat with a combination of courtyard cottages and woodland lodges.
“The solution was to add three Ecodan 11kW renewable heat pumps to provide the majority of heating throughout the year, with the oil boiler kicking in as a last resort when the weather turns icy”, explains Mr Lloyd. In addition to the 13 bedrooms, Henlle Hall has six grand rooms on the ground oor including the kitchen, drawing, games, dining room, parlour and the feather room (which has borders painted in game bird feathers).
“It is a fantastic, historic building but it is also leaky, and there is not much we can do because of the Grade II Listing”, says Mr Lloyd. Three PUHZ-HW112VHA(-BS) Ecodan units have been installed discretely outside the rear of the property and these work in a cascade system, which means that the heat pumps work individually or together to respond accurately to the
heating requirements of the property. The demand is also rotated between the units so that all three heat pumps share the work maximising efficiency and helping prolong the system’s lifespan. Ecodan’s advanced intelligent controls mean that the heat pumps work in a hybrid situation with the oil boiler, deciding which heating system to use at any time to ensure that the heating in the house is the most economical way possible. “We had thought that we would simply have to put up with the high costs of running on oil and the problems with winter deliveries, but now, this is so much better all round ”, added Mr Lloyd. “We also qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive on every kW of renewable heating that the Ecodan s ste enerates

Samsung 360 Cassette Mobile App will help designers and installers
Save Time with Samsung DVM Mobile App
Any designers and installers planning an air conditioning solution using Samsung’s new 360 Cassette should find it much easier with the company’s new mobile app. The app uses augmented reality to help air conditioning engineers see how they can fit the unit and what it will look like when in place. Installers can superimpose a virtual version of Samsung’s new circular air conditioning cassette onto any ceiling. Then, they can change its colour, position, size and angle to show their customers a realistic view of how their site could look. Contractors can then save and share the augmented reality image with their customers, and even compare it with existing air conditioning cassettes in place. The app includes a gallery of ideal locations that would use the Samsung 360 cassette, such as schools, hospitals, offices or shops. To download the Samsung 360 app, visit Google Play.
Samsung is helping dealers, contractors and installers save time with its new DVM Mobile app. Engineers can find relevant information about Samsung heating and cooling products using their smartphone app. Anyone who installs the Samsung DVM App onto an Android or iOS smartphone will get the latest technical, marketing and updates from the company, including newsletters and videos. The app also includes product specifications for Samsung air conditioning units including split and VRF, an energy simulation feature and controller information. Samsung’s UK head of air conditioning, Charles McAlpine said: “We are dedicated to ensuring that the tools available to installers are quick, simple and offers users the very best solution possible. The use of a mobile app allows engineers to access information like they have never done before, saving valuable businesses time and money.” Download the app from Google Play or the App Store.
LG Launches First 5-Ton VRF Single Phase Heat Recovery Unit
Waterloo delivers ‘vav-vav-voom’ through variable air volume
LG claimed an industry first with the launch of its VRF 5-ton single-phase heat recovery unit in the USA. The VRF (variable refrigerant flow) unit is new to the Korean company’s range of Multi V S outdoor units, which is ideal for the domestic and light commercial applications. The 5-ton unit complements their existing 2-ton heat pump and 5-ton heat recovery units. The new Multi V S models include scroll compressors which have a greater operating speed range, which means engineers can match compressor speed with demand more efficiently. In turn, that means better efficiency and lower energy costs. The single-phase feature of the unit means it is usable in residential as well as light commercial applications. LG says the Multi V S needs ‘little or no ductwork’, which means it takes up less space and has a smaller impact on a building’s structure. The 5-ton unit is under feet high, and it is slim too.
These days, buildings are more intelligent. Today we expect automatic lighting to turn on and off to reduce wastage when nobody is in a room. Waterloo Air Products offers the ability to control air flow in the same way using Variable Air Volume (VAV) for long-term energy efficiency benefits. VAV monitors temperature and humidity and adjusts the air volume automatically to maintain an environment suited to the needs of the specific room. This also makes running the building more efficient, because changes in volume are made quickly to maintain the desired temperature, helping large buildings such as offices, factories, schools, hospitals or high-rise developments. The range of volume controllers also includes Constant Air Volume (CAV), volume flow rate controllers, sensor-activated dampers and secondary attenuators. Options include acoustically lined versions for reduced sound.

I
n 1999 they began supplying the local catering industry as ‘The Catering Butcher’, delivering the same excellent quality fresh meat that they pride themselves on and backing it up with outstanding levels of customer service.
The company had expanded to such an extent, now delivering to over 300 hotels, restaurants and conference venues in the surrounding Staffordshire and Cheshire areas, that it had out grown its facility. A decision was made to move to a new state of the art 17,000 sq ft cutting plant premises in Fenton, Stoke on Trent.
H.H. Jackson decided to turn to its current and longstanding service contractor, Trentside Refrigeration, to provide its requirements for all aspects in the cooling at the new facility. Ashok Sachdev, MD of Trentside Refrigeration, liaised with local Dean & Wood Manchester branch and their technical team to provide an efficient and highly reliable solution for the several different room installations on site. It was decided to go with 5 x Bitzer LH and 1 x Ecostar condensing units providing full capacity for the design parameters and
delivering excellent energy efficiency. Ashok commented “We have dealt with Bitzer over many years within the refrigeration business and have found their track record to be incredibly reliable and robust units, given the nature of the application, we felt, along with Dean & Wood that it was the right solution for the application”
