TMP DELIVERS HVAC

SOLUTION AT NEW

AUDI PLANT Manchester-based Tyco Mechanical Products (TMP) has spe i ed and supp ied a omp ete H me hani a so ution at udi s iggest produ tion site in erman A new paint plant has been developed in Ingolstadt – one of the largest car factories in Europe - and TMP’s brief was to facilitate cooled water, chilled water and compressed air.

The project was awarded on the strength of TMP’s proposal to supply a grooved coupling system with reduced fixed point forces, in combination with pipe support racks, pipe hangers and metal framing to overcome complex project challenges.

GRINNELL grooved couplings eliminated the need for traditional techniques, such as welding at high elevation points of the building, and expansion bellows, which resulted in reduced anchor forces on the building structure.

To ensure that the installation phase remained trouble-free, training was delivered to on-site operators, using grooving tools to demonstrate safe and correct methods of pipe grooving.

GMS personnel continued to visit the site to provide additional support, training, advice and reports, managing any unexpected issues as they arose during the installation phase.

Marcel De Vries from TMP was responsible for project management. He said: “With detailed planning and preparation from the start we remained one step ahead of the competition and o ered our customer an innovative, robust and coste ective total grooved pipework solution for optimal e ciency.

The RA R 3E model with a cooling capacity of kW has been installed alongside an R I- F E ducted indoor unit, enabling heated or cooled air to be distributed throughout the warehouse via a ductwork system.

The indoor unit static pressure setting is completely adjustable four settings including a zero static pressure option , and three fan speeds are selectable via the C-ARF E remote controller. They can connect directly to the unit through the app without the need for a wireless internet connection. CO2 the buzzword at EuroShop 2017

ACR Journal spent three days in Dusseldorf supporting many of the manufacturers and reporting back to its readers on a plentiful supply of innovative new products, most of which were launched at the exhibition.

W

ith over 113,000 visitors and 2,368 exhibitors, this was the largest EuroShop in its 50-year history.

It was pretty clear that CO2 small packs for the convenience store and smaller end of the retail market was the push for

this year. The R&D over recent years has created a plethora of cost e ective and space saving alternatives with natural refrigerant for end users.

You couldn’t overlook the rows and rows of cases on display. While you might think a case is a case, take a closer look when

looking to install. So many varieties with user friendly options are available for the customer. No longer are cases designed for or viewed as ‘just storing’ for chilled/ frozen goods.

STEP BY STEP BY STEP F or this month’s column, I’d like to ask two direct questions and would welcome your thoughts and answers either by writing to the editor, or by emailing me directly.

I’ve been asked by my marketing colleagues whether videos would help me in my role as a trainer, whether that is for air conditioning or for heat pumps.

Whilst I believe that videos can be a very useful learning tool, I still believe in a hands-on approach so I’d really appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

Q1: Would you use training videos if they were uploaded to YouTube or available on our website?

Most of us have a video-enabled smartphone these days, so watching a short video out in the field is no longer the technical challenge it used to be – putting aside certain areas of the country with limited broadband!

But is that the best way to get the answers you need when you are right in the middle of an installation?

Or is it just another and highly practical way of getting the information you need, in addition to manuals, pdf product information sheets, telephone helpdesks, fault code text messages, etc?

Q2: If you had to prioritise one area in particular, what would you ocus on first In an ideal world, I would have a camera crew on standby for almost any situation, so that I could video an installation for a step-by-step guide, or could show how we explain technological features and benefits in our classrooms, or could highlight how to programme the settings for a controller.

However, I am quite sure that my marketing colleagues will want me to focus on one particular area over another, so my suggestion is that we look at the ins and outs of controllers, so that anyone setting up a system or commissioning it will have access to a comprehensive and visual overview of the intricacies of the control system.

So, would you agree with me that a series of ‘how to’ videos on controllers would be a worthwhile exercise Please respond quickly. My Hollywood career may well depend on it!

To connect the unit’s condensate drain to the tank pump inlet, attach appropriate rubber adaptor*. Cut to fit, glue and position 3/4” rigid pipe and 3/4” 90º elbows** and secure with cable ties.

T

hree J & E Hall Fusion commercial condensing units are playing an important role in the expansion of a north west-based meat wholesale depot. The units have been installed at Dalziel Ltd in Chorley, Lancashire, which recently extended its chill room – almost doubling the storage capacity of the premises.

The company, which has 12 strategically located distribution depots nationwide, supplies a wide range of meat products and other equipment to the butchery and catering trade. of the new chill extension before selecting the ideal cooling equipment for the job.

The message from Europe is clear; FC refrigerants are not a viable long-term solution and refrigeration plant operators should look to invest in futureproof cooling systems to avoid escalating costs and ensure uninterrupted business operation. atural refrigerants are one of the long-term solutions for companies a ected by the F- as regulations. While the initial purchase cost may be higher it is the lifecycle cost of running the system which is key. Those who continue to operate cooling systems with FCs face the risk of escalating running costs in the short to medium term.

The Current F- as regulations E are phasing out FC, based on a quota shared across the E community. If a member state leaves the community it is possible that the E may recalculate the division of the quota across its remaining members, e ectively giving each member state a larger share of the quota.

As the leaves the union it is also possible, although unlikely, that the overnment could re-examine the regulation and adopt a new quota or completely change its strategy. The current commitment by the is to reduce the overall usage of FC refrigerants by 2 of the 200 -20 2 sales average by 2030.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COMPRESSOR

FOR THE RIGHT JOB Ed Whinyates of Stonegrove Refrigeration Services outlines the issues to consider before deciding between a reciprocating or screw compressor.

Compressor choice

When deciding on whether a screw or recip is the right compressor choice, a number of things need to be considered and assessed. These include the type of application, operating conditions, temperature, refrigerant type and future maintenance. Also, capital expenditure will need to be taken into consideration.

I

t has been said that a compressor is the heart of a refrigeration system, being the only active main co ponent hich aintains the o of refrigerant. So when it comes to selecting the right compressor for a refrigeration or air conditioning application, one of the major discussions has been the choice between screw compressors and reciprocating (recip) compressors.

Unfortunately there is not one simple equation to answer this.

Screw compressor manufacturers will tell you theirs is the best solution, and recip compressor manufacturers will do the same!

Each compressor type has its advantages (and disadvantages). One view is that screw compressors are a conclusive choice for applications with large refrigeration capacity requirements at low evaporation temperature levels. The capital outlay on screw compressors also tends to be less than recips. The compact design lends itself to a smaller install footprint, and being skid-mounted means no additional foundations are required (avoiding the cost associated with this).

Although a screw compressor will have higher energy consumption in comparison to a recip, this can be reduced on larger applications (from approx. 1200kW), and lower temperature applications. Large Industrial screw compressors tend to have an adjustment device for internal volume ratio. This ensures e cient operation can be kept within a certain range around design conditions.

Screw compressors need to be oil cooled (which isn’t normally required on recips), but you can reclaim the waste oil heat and use it for warming water etc. With this in mind, the cost implication of oil could be lessened by taking advantage of this beneďŹ t.

Maintenance on screw compressors tends to cost less and so, due to the precise nature of parts and assembly, can be considered more reliable. However main overhauls involve compressors being sent back to the manufacturer.

factory overhauls, as a direct replacement is provided for any exchange.

It has been argued that there is less possibility of a breakdown with a screw compressor. This is due to the fact it only has two major moving parts that either have contact touch (no friction) or are not in contact with each other, so minimal wear and tear. This in turn means that a screw compressor is suitable for 24hr continuous operation.

Reciprocating compressors

There are a number of benefits for employing a recip compressor, particularly on higher evaporating temperature applications. There is generally a lower energy consumption of up to 15% on smaller duty applications. On part-load applications, recips will outstrip screws on relative energy consumption. They will also automatically adjust to actual evaporating and condensing pressures, which in turn leads to greater energy e ciency. Recips also have lower energy consumption when using high pressure refrigerants (for example CO2).

Recip compressors come into their own when plant does not need run continuously. They are also considered to be extremely reliable in this application, particularly on smaller machines.

Another benefit of a recip over a screw compressor is noise. If noise sensitivity is an issue (for example, business premises in or around residential areas), then a recip would be a better choice as the db level is generally quieter.

Due to the many moving parts on reciprocating compressors, maintenance requirements are more rigorous than on screw compressors, with frequent part replacement (for example suction and discharge valves). However, the maintenance tends to be fairly simple in comparison to screws, without the need for factory overhauls. Also, the additional maintenance costs can be negated by superior energy savings.

In conclusion

It is clear that both screw and recip compressors have their advantages.

One could argue that a recip compressor is far more energy e cient, and so the running costs are a lot lower, but a screw compressor is a more cost-e ective install with lower maintenance costs.

FOR RURAL STORES When Dickleburgh Stores in Norfolk passed ownership to Mike Humphreys, he looked towards the latest in energy efficient, low-noise refrigeration technology to reduce costs and improve performance in the village shop.

D

ickleburgh Stores has been trading for more than 100 years. A staple in the village, it is the closest and most convenient store for residents who would have to travel six miles to reach other shops for their day-to-day essentials. In addition, the store also contains the local ost fice a ital amenity for the rural population.

Taking ownership of the store in 2015, Mike Humphreys wanted to undertake a major renovation of the premises to ensure it appealed to the local community, whilst improving the store’s e ciency and running costs.

Following an extensive retail career, Mike moved into the convenience store business when he acquired a store in enninghall five years ago. Both Dickleburgh and Kenninghall carry the branding of Premier, the Booker group convenience store franchise.

When planning the Dickleburgh renovation, he originally had in mind an

installation similar to Kenninghall. He said: “I spoke to my refrigeration engineer who suggested Daikin might have a better alternative.

Accounting for 50%-70% of a typical retailer’s energy bill, refrigeration costs are a significant proportion of on-going running costs. The Carbon Trust estimates in their report “Chilling Energy Costs that . million is spent on refrigeration per year, equating to an annual cost of , 0 - 22, 00 per store.

With The Carbon Trust stating that a 20% cut in energy costs equates to a 5% increase in sales, an improvement in e ciency can produce significant financial gains and create a competitive business advantage.

Seeking a better solution, Mike spoke with one of Daikin’s refrigeration specialists,- Paul Cornwell. Paul worked closely with Mike to gain a

clear understanding of his project and requirements and in this instance Daikin ZEAS Inverter Condensing Unit and LT Booster were the most suitable energy e cient lant for this installation.

Mike liked that the ZEAS is a compact packaged unit, only taking up 0.7 sqm of space in his rear yard - combining this with the with energy performance convinced Mike that ZEAS & LT Booster was the correct proposal.

Mike also needed an installation contractor, as his usual company were not available. aikin o ered approved accredited local contractors of which Mike chose to use Adcock Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Norwich Branch.

CLEAN, KILL, PROTECT Advanced Engineering Chairman Barry Lea explains how a partnership with the University of Surrey has transformed refrigeration cabinet and chiller maintenance at supermarkets across the UK.

I

f you’ve had the pleasure of doing a deep clean on a food chiller cabinet, you’ll no doubt be intimately familiar with the unpleasant sights awaiting you underneath the base plate, drain and condensate tray.

With a good supply of moisture and food at hand, mould, algae, and bacteria are right at home in the condensate tray. It’s the perfect breeding ground for these little horrors as they grow and multiply and excrete a thick, protective exopolysaccharide — the slime or jelly you �nd in a problem cabinet.

We sent samples of slime from a range of store cabinets for independent laboratory analysis, and found that a single millilitre contained as much as ten million microbes.

While it’s true that some of the germs were relatively harmless, others had the potential to cause serious infections.

Worryingly, there were strains like Staphylococcus that are well-known for their immunity to biocides. And this is in close proximity to the food and has direct air current circulating over the top of it, this air then goes into the cabinet and out into the store.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, microbial growth in the condensate tray leads to an even more pressing matter for retailers.

The true cost of condensate leaks

The exopolysaccharide jelly can often block the condensate drain. With nowhere to go, the water level rises… and that’s when the problems really start: Leaks. More often than not, when you see an absorbent sock by the footplate of a leaking cabinet, a blocked condensate drain is the cause. Wet �oors are a slip ha ard, and contribute to a poor environment for customers.

motor for a chiller cabinet. While it may seem like a minor expense, you then have to factor in UK retailers having to replace hundreds of thousands of them every year — usually because they’ve become immersed in rising water — and each one needs an engineer’s time to replace at the service.

Soaring energy bills. As the rising water shorts the fan motor, air flow through that section of the evaporator will dramatically decrease, causing that part to freeze. It will still consume energy, without providing any meaningful cooling to the refrigerator.

This means the remaining fan motors and the system will have to work harder to maintain the desired temperature.

Loss of retail sales. Ultimately, the cabinet can break down, resulting in an emergency callout, and loss of sales as the cabinet is emptied and taken out of use — harming customers’ brand perception, and costing potential revenue the whole time it’s out of service.

This seemingly minor problem of microbes growing in condensate trays between regularly scheduled cleaning is costing UK retailers millions of pounds per year, and that’s still a conservative estimate.

A THREE-STEP SOLUTION If you really want to be rid of the germs and stop them from becoming permanent houseguests there are three steps to go through:

STAGE 1: CLEAN First, get the localised exopolysaccharide jelly out of the drains with a wet/dry vacuum. Then apply a powerful drain unblocker, like DrainSafe, to break down the exopolysaccharide further down the pipework by hydrolysis ensuring that you have free flowing drains.

DrainSafe has been specially formulated for this purpose and is safe to use around food.

So why does it keep coming back?

No matter how thoroughly you clean a problem cabinet with a conventional pressure washer, the exopolysaccharide jelly will keep coming back again and again. By the time you return for your next scheduled clean six, nine, or twelve months later, it’s there again… unless you’ve been called out to a breakdown in the meantime.

It’s simple: the micro-organisms form a exopolysaccharide biofilm , which protects them from the environment and makes them resistant to most conventional cleaning methods. And this film isn’t water soluble, so even if you’ve removed the bulk of it, and the tray appears clean — there’ll still be a thin microbial layer left behind. And that spells disaster.

The jelly causing microbes will have happily started growing back before you’ve even replaced the base plate.

STAGE 2: KILL Stage two involves the use of a coil cleaner and disinfectant such as CoolSafe, an effective coil cleaner designed to remove all common contaminants left by organic materials on cooling coils, including slime, mould and foodstuffs. Not only that, CoolSafe will kill any microbes that it comes into contact with.

Spray CoolSafe over the coil and in and around the drip tray and leave for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

STAGE 3: PROTECT Put ongoing protection in the condensate tray to treat the run-off on its way to the drain — keeping the drain clean too.

Advanced already had excellent solutions for the first two stages, the problem was we’d still been looking for a way that retailers could deal with that third stage: protection. We knew we needed a long-lasting product with the right surfactants and biocides to stop the microbes growing back, for up to a year — and that’s not an easy ask.

So we turned to our Knowledge Transfer Partnership with the University of Surrey Chemistry Department, and Chartered Scientist chemist Dr Kajally Jobe — who has since joined us permanently as Advanced’s new Head of Research and Development.

After months of hard work, he formulated a small, pink strip that works wonders.

In fact, we were so impressed with this “magic bullet” that we named it after him.

Formulated specifically for long-lasting antimicrobial protection in refrigeration units, they are designed with active agents called QUATS which cause cellular disruption in the membranes of micro-organisms.

Jally Strips work synergistically with Cool afe to o er superior cleaning and disinfecting performance.

And the cost of this crucial final stage in the cleaning process, with the potential to solve a multi-million-pound maintenance problem £1.20 per strip.

Not content with stopping there, our KTP partnership has also brought us VerteX, an adaptive pH 7.6 cleaner for condensers and evaporators. A fullspectrum cleaner, its unique formulation allows it to change its own pH balance to either Acid or Alkali to better combat the soils it comes into contact with.

Advanced’s three-step process is now in use nationwide and is already protecting tens of thousands of chiller cabinets, across three major supermarket brands. The results have been impressive: engineer callouts down by thousands, visibly cleaner cabinets, and a dramatic reduction in time lost stocking and restocking are measurable year-on-year.

SIMPLE SOLUTION THAT CAN SAVE LIVES It sounds like the plot of a soap opera… a worker is trapped inside a supermarket refrigerator and nobody knows she is there until a body is found the next day.

T

his was indeed a storyline on Coronation Street back in the 1990s and while health and safety regulations have become more stringent since then, the dangers still e ist hen sta are working in cold stores and refrigerated warehouses.

It is the duty of the employer to ensure the workplace is safe and that sta are given the relevant training and supervision. Companies must identify ha ards that exist in a cold store or refrigerated warehouse and ensure that sta have safe systems in place.

Regular risk assessments will identify potential dangers and help employers identify what precautions should be introduced.

In addition, safe ways of working should be developed and put into practice.

There is, however, an extremely simple and cost-e ective device which can safeguard sta welfare and help operators comply with health and safety legislation.

A trapped personnel alarm, such as the one manufactured by tonegate Instruments, is an inexpensive and straightforward to install device which prevents employees becoming trapped inside a cold store.

If someone becomes trapped, they hit an emergency alarm button inside the store which triggers audio and visual alarms, with the monitors backed up by batteries in case of a mains failure. The display also sets a volt-free relay to repeat the call to a siren or other remote alarm.

The alarm itself is compact just 22mm x 22m x mm in height, width and depth with mm pitch screw terminals and a maximum cable si e of 2. mm.

Alarming statistics

Another consideration for operators of commercial refrigeration equipment is the prevention of gas leaks. While gases are essential to the refrigeration process, leaks can be harmful both to sta and the environment as well as a ecting the equipment’s performance.

Workers need to be aware of the dangers of working with refrigerants, particularly since around 0 of gas escapes before anyone notices.

Current legislation demands that refrigeration systems with 300kg or more of refrigerants must be fitted with a leak detector. Those with a charge of 30kg or more must be tested for leaks twice annually and systems with a charge of between 3-30kg are required to be tested once a year.

The gas detectors themselves need to have a sensitivity of g per year and be calibrated with a ,000ppm mix of gas to air. They should be checked after 2 hours’ continuous use.

Devices such as Stonegate Instruments’ L 02 fulfil all these requirements and operate 24-7, detecting a range of both toxic and nontoxic gases, including hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, which are known to have a high global warming potential.

LED colours indicate the status of each sensor, meaning that if any gas leak is sensed, not only are audio and visual alarms activated, sta members can immediately identify exactly what and where the problem is, so that it can be swiftly rectified.

The audio alarm can be muted but will remain on a relay until all sensors in the a ected one have been cleared.

Energy boost

as leaks also have a detrimental e ect on equipment performance. Research shows a typical 300kW refrigeration system with a small, continuous leak left unrepaired for three months could result in an extra 10kW of electricity being used. In financial terms, this means an energy bill increase of around £1,400 –

not to mention the cost of repairs, which are likely to be higher the longer the leak is left.

Doors accidentally left open are another contributor to increased energy bills. This simple error can prove costly, as not only must the system must work harder to maintain temperature levels, it can result in the refrigerated goods being spoiled.

One simple prevention measure is to fit an open door alarm which alerts the workforce should a door be accidentally left open for any length of time.

Stonegate Instruments’ Door Open Alarm uses a flashing xenon beacon and two audio alarms to draw attention to a coldroom door being left open.

Often it is the simplest solutions which can address the most complex problems.

RECLAMATION AND RECOVERY

A-Gas Managing Director John Ormerod explains why these areas of the industry will grow in prominence in the coming years as the switch to low GWP refrigerants gathers pace.

R

eclamation will play an increasingly key role as the F-Gas stepdowns shape the future of refrigeration and air conditioning. The industry is predicting a growth in reclamation as a result of the restrictions in the supply of high GWP refrigerants under the F-Gas Regulations.

Natural refrigerants fell out of favour because their physical properties can a e the di cult to handle Ammonia is toxic, hydrocarbons are a a le and is a high-pressure gas but to their credit they have major plus points. ydrocar ons and have a low GWP and ammonia has no GWP value at all.

Supplies of reclaimed refrigerant are crucial to ensure that there is enough gas on the market to meet demand. As

a result of this, A-Gas is in the process of more than doubling its reclamation capacity by building a new separator on its site at Portbury near Bristol.

The new equipment will enable the reclamation of mixed refrigerants received from customers across Europe.

A-Gas has been a pioneer of refrigerant processing for more than ten years.

Using fractional distillation technology, mixed refrigerant products that would otherwise be consigned for destruction can be separated and restored back to international standards.

A-Gas reclaims thousands of tonnes of refrigerant a year across the world making it one of the leaders in the market. Recently one of my colleagues, UK Business Development Manager Martin O’Donnell, was in Bangladesh talking to government o cials and representatives of the shipbreaking industry about the benefits of reclaiming refrigerants.

Those attending this meeting of the Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling project wanted to hear how reclamation can make a real di erence to a country’s environmental credentials.

Bangladesh is the largest shipbreaking nation in the world – handling up to 230 vessels a year – but standards of safety and environmental practice do need improvement.

their game in how they dispose of what’s left of the old vessels and this includes restricted gases used onboard in refrigeration and air conditioning – among them R12 and R22 – and other ozone-depleting substances including alons employed for fighting fires at sea.

Martin was able to explain to the Bangladesh government and the shipbreaking industry how A-Gas can help them recycle their unwanted refrigerants and how this will allow them to highlight the best environmental practice.

The response from the Bangladesh government and the shipbreakers was very positive and A-Gas is now looking at ways in which it can help the industry recycle gases to their advantage at a local level.

Pressure on resources is rising across the globe and so optimising each part of the recycling process is becoming increasingly important. It is in the interests of the industry where ever it is to recover as much refrigerant as possible and send it back up the supply chain.

That’s why the time is right to look carefully at the mechanics of recovery and how you can take it to a new level.

parts of the retrofit programme and figure out the best way to optimise what they do.

Recovery is often the part of the process that gets overlooked but unfortunately this can be the element that can take the longest. ear in mind that if the system is not particularly well designed it may take several more hours than you had bargained for to get the liquid refrigerant out. There may also be other issues where the refrigerant gets trapped in the system and has to boil more slowly.

Most contractors in the UK are using what are called bu boxes small hand-held units which have fairly low

recovery rates. ut in the context of a supermarket pack retrofit there may be several hundred kgs of refrigerant to recover and this will take a considerable amount of time to complete. ou may recover 0- 0 of the charge as liquid and find that the remaining vapour takes many hours to recover. o it’s important that installers factor this into their planning before they undertake the work.

The technology and the equipment will have to step up to meet the challenge which has been laid down by the F- as Regulations. and-held units won’t be enough to meet the demands of bigger systems. ou can be sure that recovery and reclamation will rise in prominence in the coming years as the industry looks to retrofit and recycle as part of the switch to low W refrigerants. www.agas.co.uk

ATTRACTING WOMEN ENGINEERS

MAKES GREAT BUSINESS SENSE The IOR is celebrating International Women in Engineering Day with a networking event aimed at Women in RACHP

A

s part of International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June, the IOR and Women in RACHP are holding a training course specifically designed for career development for women working in the industry.

Hosted by Cool Concerns, the event will begin with a practical session with Jane Gartshore, Director of Cool Concerns and past President of the IOR, who was last year named one of the top 50 women in engineering by the Daily Telegraph.

Given that a lot of the women currently working in the sector are in support roles such as sales, HR and administration, Jane will be giving participants the chance to gain hands-on experience of refrigerant handling using the latest alternative refrigerants at the Cool Concerns training centre.

Interactive

The second part of the event will be looking at career development with an interactive session with Carol Bond, Director at Carbon Data Resources, who has a background in leading innovative energy-based research projects in the refrigeration sector and an interest in diversity in the workplace. This part of the day will include interactive group work on personal development, power in the workplace and career planning.

The course is limited to 16 participants to make sure that everyone gets a chance to do some practical and team-based work. If there is su cient demand, we hope to repeat a similar event again in the future to give more opportunities to take part. The event is being organised by the IOR Women in RACHP network, which also has a LinkedIn group to share information and advice, as well as encouraging more female students and young people to consider careers in our growing sector.

Why are we o ering an event targeted at women? Because the engineering

sector as a whole has a shortage of female engineers. In the UK, women make up only 9% of the sector’s workforce and we are lagging behind our European counterparts such as Latvia, Bulgaria and Cyprus where they have an impressive 30% of women engineers.

There’s a real need to raise awareness and showcase engineering as a great career choice for women. While there is hardly any gender di erence on the uptake of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at GCSE level, just 20% of A-level physics students are female. At undergraduate level this falls to 16%, apprenticeships just 4% and Engineering Council registrations 6%.

Diverse

Attracting women to engineering disciplines such as refrigeration and air conditioning also makes great business sense – the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) reports that companies are 15% more likely to perform better with a diverse sta , while of diversity and talents leaders agree that a diverse workforce is crucial to drive innovation.

And let’s not forget that the engineering sector as a whole is su ering from a

skills shortage across the board with 32% of the sector’s employers report having issues employing experienced sta and fearing that a skill shortage could seriously impact the viability of their business.

In other words, recruiting and keeping women employed in the sector is an absolute necessity to its long term sustainability.

What excites/interests you about the industry?

I like that every job is di erent, every site is di erent with its own challenges so each day is di erent.

Where do you see your career developing?

I hope to help my father progress the business as it has done in the past.

What is the best piece of advice you were ever given?

Don’t assume anything and always wear steel toe cap shoes.

What are the challenges of this industry?

Training is very di cult as it is not easily obtained in our area of the country.

Luckily we can get some in Warrington, but it mostly seems to be in London.

Also, when we try and hire sta it can be di cult and we have to take on untrained sta and train in house.

Where did you study?

I studied in house and completed my F-Gas through HRP (our local distributor).

What was your �rst job I worked as an estate agent for years then when the property bubble burst I came to give my father a hand in his business. Nine years later I am still here. I started helping with installations, running around with a Hoover, but I much preferred the servicing side as I was able to go and meet customers and see all the sites.

Where do you work now?

I am mostly o ce-based after I was ‘banned’ from site when I was pregnant.

We took someone on while I was pregnant to do my job and kept them on afterwards. o mainly o ce, but we do sell a certain bit of kit tagionello from Italy for which I am the only UK and Ireland engineer trained to use, repair and sell, so I do get to travel to see those customers, travelling from near Folkestone up to Scotland and Belfast.

What are the benefits of being in your role?

Having been on site for years and now in the o ce, I know a lot of the quirks of each site and sometimes know more about the site’s equipment than the owner. Also I can quote easily for repairs as I have more of an idea on how long it takes to change a compressor.

TOSHIBA GOES OFFSITE FOR PIONEERING HOTEL BUILD How detailed planning and collaboration has helped develop an alternative construction opportunity.

The first hotels to be constructed by this method are located in London, ristol, anchester, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

The air conditioning consists of Toshiba R -i heat recovery RF systems and ducted fan coil systems, equipped with Toshiba’s award-winning refrigerant leak detection and management system, plus a full intelligent controls package.

The indoor elements of the system, including pipework and terminal units, are installed in the building modules in China.

The projects require detailed planning and a high level of collaboration to ensure both technical and logistical aspects run seamlessly, and all parties carry out their roles to the letter. Toshiba worked closely with CI C, consultants and end users to ensure the projects were successfully delivered.

The new equipment for the Ptarmigan restaurant in Scotland’s Cairngorm Mountain Ski Resort, comprising a Danfoss Optyma condensing unit and LuVe evaporator, was installed and commissioned by Elgin Refrigeration.

The Ptarmigan, at 1,097m, boasts views down to Loch Morlich and across to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, and Ben Hope.

Elgin chose the combination of a Danfoss Optyma Slim model LSHM074, and a Lu-Ve F30HC evaporator for this remote tourist attraction. The equipment was sourced from Dean & Wood’s Glasgow.

OUR HISTORY Airedale International was formed by Leeds-based entrepreneurs Alan Duttine and Peter Midgley in 1974 to provide air conditioning for specialist computer and healthcare environments.

The company has a facility in South Africa (the only precision air conditioning manufacturer in Africa), a main facility in Rawdon, Leeds, a sales office in London, representative offices across the world, and offices in Moscow and Dubai.

Historically there has always been a belief that British-made equipment is better. Although questioned and challenged in the 1970s, this allowed British manufacturing to review processes and evolve for the better. There has also been a perception that when buying British, you are buying quality. That is certainly a commitment which we hold at the heart of our production and brand ethos.

A ARD- NN N ‘IT’S A Heat Pumps Today’s Publishing Editor, Juliet Loiselle, visited Finn Geotherm, one of East Anglia’s leading suppliers and installers of ground and air source heat pump systems for domestic, commercial and industrial customers.

N

orfolk-based Finn Geotherm celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2016. The company was originally set up in 2006 by David Alston to specify and install ground source heat pumps made by Lämpöässä in Finland. David is half-Finnish himself and so, with a degree in engineering, was well placed to launch the company.

David was joined in 2009 by commercial director Guy Ransom who, with a background in corporate finance, helped to grow Finn Geotherm to where it is today (Guy actually had Finn Geotherm install a system in his house and saw so much potential in the company and the technology that he joined them!)

In the past 10 years, the company has gone from three employees completing 0kW installations to more than 20 sta today and 360kW installations for the likes of RA T eeds in a ron Walden. Finn Geotherm remains the only approved UK installer of Lämpöässä ground source systems and is one of a handful of expert installers of implex air source systems.

The company solely installs heat pumps – it made the strategic decision not to diversify into solar, biomass etc.

Finn Geotherm feels the growth to date is just the beginning, with the full potential of renewable heating set to be realised in the coming years as consumers become increasingly aware of the opportunities and benefits the system o ers. This will be bolstered by the growing volatility of fossil fuels and their security of supply, not to mention proposed government targets to deliver of energy from renewable sources.

Most notably, Finn Geotherm has recently been recognised and subsequently won two categories at the National ACR & Heat Pump Awards, held at the Town Hall, Birmingham earlier this year.

Domestic Ground Source – Winner

The installation included ground source heating for a picturesque 18th Century tower windmill in Weybourne used as a family home. The brief was to provide low maintenance heating and hot water for the whole house, including a mill bedroom on the fifth floor.

In order to provide the best possible solution for the customer, Finn Geotherm undertook a very detailed heat loss survey to ensure the heat pump output and radiators were su cient to meet the required temperatures throughout the year.

Non Domestic Ground Source Installation – Winner

RAGT’s initial brief was to reduce the heating costs for its six glasshouses, which are used for developing new crops.

LPG had previously been used to heat the glasshouses which, with a U value of around six, meant the boiler was in constant use in winter, leading to issues with fuel supply and heat distribution as the system couldn’t keep up with the heat being generated. RAGT needed a new system to work with its existing grow tubes.

Finn Geotherm installed three Lämpöässä T120 ground source heat pumps linked to three Akvanti 2400litre thermal stores with a network of 21,000metres of collector loop. Controlled using Trend building management, the 350kW ground source heat pump totally replaces RAGT’s previous LPG system.

TERMOPLUS HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION:

THE PROCESS AND A 10-YEAR OVERVIEW As a heat pump manufacturer, TermoPlus could not miss out on the benefits of using a heat pump for it’s Slovenian office and factory.

T

ermoPlus was determined to become 100% powered by renewables by 2018 and the project involved the use of ground source heat pumps and solar PV to cover all the energy and heating requirements of the site.

CEO Jure Šacer explained the rationale: “It was much akin to the reason car manufacturers participate in racing events. By installing, owning and maintaining a system of our own, we could gather data, introduce improvements and get physical input that our simulation labs can’t o er. ot to mention the lower overheads and setting an example.”

A holistic approach

The Slovenian facilities total 1000 m². Back in 2007 the site used 61000 kWh of power from the grid and an oil fuelled boiler system that consumed 3000 litres of heating oil annually (a total annual cost of €12.500 in 2012 terms). CO2 output was at 130.748 kg pa.

After the heat pump installation in 2008 no heating oil was used at all. A ground

water geothermal system was installed for heating and cooling along with a DHW heat pump that produces domestic hot water. Fan coils that enable cooling were installed as well as a mechanical ventilation heat recovery unit for the ventilation of the shop floor. The facade and building roof were also further insulated with doors and windows being upgraded.

An annual energy saving of 30% resulted in the use of 43.000kWh for heating, cooling, ventilation and production and zero oil. (total cost in 2012 terms: €4.700, down from €12.500).

In 2013 a 43kWp PV solar power plant was installed. As a result, in 2014 93% of all energy needs were covered by the solar power plant and a financial surplus from the feed-in tari resulted in additional income.

After the implementation of these upgrades the Slovenian branch produced 23.648 kg of CO2 with all electric consumption. This is a total reduction of CO2 emissions of 107.100 kg per year, or 1.071 tonnes over 10 years.

The Gen 6 TermoPlus AQUApump

The heat pumps

Two Gen 3 TermoPlus AQUApump ground-source heat pumps where used, one of which was equipped with a digital scroll variable output compressor. Also, a 300l TermoPlus DHW heat pump was used for hot running water.

A 18,05Kw Aquapump W25 DIGI EVI (COP (W10/W35): 4,80) was installed along with a 26,90Kw AQUApump W25 R (COP (W10/W35): 5,06).

The TermoPlus AQUApump W25 is a high-e ciency reversible water water heat pump for central heating and cooling with a weather compensation controller. It made sense for one of the units to feature optimisation via a custom-developed scroll compressor.

Why a custom scroll compressor was used

Only digital scroll compressors o er variable compression. Simply put, they o er the advantage of digitally setting the output rate at which the heat pump operates, allowing for much more control

over e ciency and power. y including one heat pump with a digital scroll compressor the system’s operational output could be fine-tuned to the desired levels. This has resulted in overall greater e ciency, particularly with lighter loads.

The installation

A test borehole a few metres from the building produced C water at the depth of m. As a result, an open loop groundwater system that o ered the highest CO and CO made sense.

Alternatively a ground collector closed loop would have been employed instead.

Currently the ground water temperature ranges between 2, C and 2 C, depending on the season.

A , m deep borehole was then drilled and a submersible pump was inserted. E pipes were laid to the plant room. Another borehole was drilled for the return of the ground water approximately m from the supply borehole.

To allow for active cooling, reversible heat pumps were used along with fan coils for the heating cooling system. This allowed for heating and cooling in one system without the need for an additional water chiller.

The submersible pump was later replaced by an inverter driven pump, so that the pump speed and water volume would be driven according to the temperature di erential set on the heat pump. reviously, the maximum water volume was constantly pumped.

How the installation improved product development

Output components

At the time fan coils were a natural choice for the o ce spaces, since both heating and cooling were needed. owever, today underfloor heating would also accompany the fan coils for greater comfort during winter. Radiators had been in use for the bathrooms. For the shop floor, mechanical ventilation with heating cooling coils was added beside fan coils.

With the upgrade of the controller which now supports online control and speed control for circulation and submersible pumps according to the temperature di erence , seasonal e ciency of the heat pumps has increased by up to depending on the model .

Heat pumps and plant room

The two heat pumps were installed a standard 2 kW heat pump and an kW digital scroll heat pump with enhanced vapour injection. The digital scroll heat pump is used when less than kW 3kW variable is required. When needs are between and 2 kW the 2 kW heat pump is used 2 kW fixed . When needs are over 2 kW, both heat pumps work in cascade 2 - 3 kW variable . oth heat pumps were connected to a water filter and a submersible pump on one side and a 300l bu er tank on the other. SAFE WAY TO GIVE

YOUR BUSINESS A LIFT

L

ifting bulky or heavy pieces of equipment to ceiling height prior to install is a critical health and safety consideration these days.

Two people lifting and fixing pieces of equipment from step ladders is not best practice, especially when there is now a better solution available. The REFCO LFT-230 lifter is a portable electric hoist that will lift and position various pieces of equipment, such as ceiling cassettes or outdoor units, ready for fixing.

At 20kg the lifter only requires one person to carry and assemble straight from its carry bag.

Once in position, it can easily be slid to exactly where it’s needed. Assembly is quick and easy.

The top of the mast has a built-in spirit level and when this is central the four legs simply drop out to meet the floor; this creates an incredibly stable structure. The lightweight tubular steel platform rotates freely and standard ratchet scraps can be easily attached, if required.

Once the piece to be lifted is placed on the platform, the operator can step back from the unit and control the lift with the long lead and variable speed handheld controller. This provides a safe working area round the unit with full view of the lift and helping to avoid potential collisions, especially in confined spaces. When the piece is located safely, the operator can then work from a step ladder and while still using the controller, can make micro adjustments before fixing.

The LFT is not limited to just lifting. It can support or stabilise ductwork prior to inspection. It’s also idea for supporting lengths of cable tray and pipe work before fixing.

For the first time, the RBC-TSI1 Black Pear has a range of inbuilt modes that can be selected to match particular applications. These include integration with higher level Building Management Systems via voltage and resistance, with discrete inputs on Modbus, and special modes for use in multi-occupied buildings.

Hotel Mode gives end users a pre-set setback option, which can be integrated with a key card window switch. This minimises energy use while delivering optimum cooling and heating to the room, for maximum guest comfort.

There are two Eco modes, one based on a timed fan operation, enabling the unit to run in an operating mode for a pre-determined period of time; the other allows the use of two set points, to cover heating and cooling, again helping to minimise energy use while maintaining optimum comfort conditions.

Suitable for application with Toshiba VRF, light commercial splits systems, and VN ventilation systems, the RBC-TSI1 has multiple uses, making it highly flexible and adaptable.

These include: Run/error indication; RS-485 connection; Monitoring and control via serial Modbus; Modbus address range 1 to 254; Direct connection to TCC-NET 2-wire A/B network; Six analogue inputs selectable as voltage or resistance; Up to 16 units can be operated in a Master/Follower configuration; Up to 8 units on a single link, providing detailed information on each unit.
