1 2022 ANNUAL REPORT Moving Forward Together
To expand our impact on families experiencing food insecurity, your Foodbank:
• Increased the number of food distributions with our mobile pop-up pantry
• Piloted a seasonal produce and perishable distribution
• Collaborated with local farms to deliver farm fresh produce to families’ doorsteps
• Redesigned our food pantry based on guest feedback
It was a year marked by innovation and collaboration.
A message from our President
2022 marked your Foodbank’s 40th anniversary — 40 years in service to this community, offering love and support in the form of groceries to our neighbors facing hunger. Last year was a unique time for food banks across the country — unlike anything I’ve experienced in my 20 years of food banking.
Rising costs caused severe economic challenges for families. In our service area, we saw a 14% increase in people served by our pantry network.
Of the families visiting pantries, 30% were new, meaning they’ve never visited a food pantry before.
The Keith D. Monda Family Food Pantry in our Stark County Campus anticipated serving 100 families each
week, but last year more than 600 families visited the pantry weekly.
Inflation also impacted your Foodbank, increasing the cost to fuel our fleet of trucks by 38%.
Supply chain issues and the increased cost for food meant we had to respond to a rise in demand with limited available inventory. The food donation shortage was unlike anything we’ve seen in our 40-year history.
We’ve responded to a shortage in food donations by purchasing more food with donated dollars.
Despite these challenges, we began an exciting expansion project to the Main Campus in Akron, a series of critical renovations that will help us

President & CEO
better serve our hunger-relief network and families facing hunger. We also led many focus groups and listening sessions with community stakeholders to inform our new strategic plan.
All of this work — feeding our neighbors, improving our facilities, having the ability to be nimble to respond to an increase in demand — is possible because of you and your support. We are so grateful for you, friends. Thank you.
With gratitude,
Daniel R. Flowers, President & CEO
Your support helped offset rising costs in 2022
In 2022, inflation reached an all-time high, reflecting the steepest rise in prices since 1982. Rising costs for everyday essentials caused severe economic challenges for families, especially those already having a difficult time making ends meet.
In the Foodbank’s service area, there was a 14% increase in people served by our pantry network, and 30% of families visiting pantries were new, meaning they never visited a food program before.
These same economic factors also impacted the work of the Foodbank and our hunger-relief network: rising inflation increased the cost to fuel our fleet by 38%. Food donations from the USDA and local food
donors were down significantly. Though other food streams helped supplement the deficit, the Foodbank was forced to purchase more food to help fill the gaps.
Thankfully, because of the generosity and compassion of dedicated Foodbank donors like you, your Foodbank was able to continue serving families facing hunger.

Fighting hunger with your help
During the pandemic, the Foodbank’s drive-thru distribution was a safe and efficient way to serve a large number of people in a short time period. Though this distribution is still offered each month, it was important for your Foodbank to return to serving our neighbors in our preferred way — offering families the opportunity to select their own food items.
Offering a choice pantry or distribution means people can shop for food items as if they were at a supermarket. It allows them to choose the groceries appropriate for their diet, religion, culture and preferences.
In 2022, the Foodbank added two new distributions to its monthly offerings, and they both allow families to choose their own groceries.
“It’s always been important to us to serve families with love and respect. Being able to make choices, like what food we consume, is empowering and acknowledges that the people we serve know what works best for them and their families.”
Dan Flowers, Foodbank President & CEO
10
MARKETPLACE DISTRIBUTION
The Foodbank piloted a seasonal produce and perishable items distribution from its Main Campus in Akron. This distribution focuses on giving away fresh vegetables, fruits, baked goods and dairy items that are nearing their expiration date. Rather than disposing of these perfectly edible and nutritious items, they go to families in need.
STARK COUNTY CAMPUS DISTRIBUTION
One Saturday per month, when many families’ food benefits have been depleted, the Foodbank offered a grocery distribution at the Stark County Campus in Canton. Here, individuals and families chose the many shelf-stable and fresh food items they needed.
11
“It’s always been important to us to serve families with respect. By allowing people to choose the grocery items they prefer, it offers people dignity during a difficult time in their lives.
It also limits food waste since people are taking home items they actually need and use.”
Dan Flowers,
Your commitment to hunger relief helps expand our reach
The Foodbank is committed to serving individuals and families all across its eightcounty service area with a variety of direct service programs. Unique partnerships and collaborations are key when finding new ways to serve the community.
26 FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS hosted by the Foodbank served 23,942 PEOPLE with enough food for 420,794 MEALS.
370 FAMILIES received deliveries of local, farm-fresh produce two times per month through the new Produce Perks Midwest collaboration.
60,835 PEOPLE received the equivalent of 450,974 MEALS at our onsite Keith D. Monda Family Food Pantry.
26,426 HOME DELIVERIES helped eliminate transportation barriers for homebound individuals.
11 ORGANIZATIONS partnered with our mobile pop-up pantry to serve 3,916 FAMILIES with enough food for 185,156 MEALS.
13
Together, we served our most vulnerable populations
Approximately half of the people served by your Foodbank are senior citizens and children under the age of 18. The Foodbank, in partnership with its hunger-relief network, focuses on serving these vulnerable populations through specific programs.

Collaborative partnerships strengthen our collective work
The Foodbank is focused on building a strong, sustainable and collaborative network within the communities it serves to help optimize the region’s collective work in hunger relief. We are thankful for our dedicated volunteers
The Foodbank couldn’t serve thousands of families each year if it weren’t for the exceptional volunteers who give their time, talent and passion to serve this organization and our neighbors facing hunger. They visit us once per year, once per month, and some, on a weekly basis. They are retirees, students, organizations and more. Simply put — we depend on them and are so grateful for them.
CAST Meet
Caring and Serving Together (CAST), a volunteer organization serving Stark County, was founded in 2011 by Michael Savage, his wife, and another couple. Though retired, they realized they could find meaningful purpose by contributing their time, talent and treasures to individuals and organizations in need.
CAST volunteers and students enrolled in their mentorship program began volunteering monthly with the Foodbank in 2022. Students are volunteering alongside seniors aged 70+, offering an enriching and unique experience for everyone.
“When you’re giving yourself away and sharing with others, it gives you a feeling of fulfillment and selfworth,” said Michael. “For me, it’s all of that. But when we work with students, many of whom are on the
receiving end of social services, and they get to be on the giving end by volunteering, their joy increased incrementally. It was awesome.”
Since volunteering at the Foodbank, Michael says hunger no longer feels like a vague concept mentioned in the news. “It takes on faces and personalities; it becomes personal.”
The Foodbank is grateful for CAST and their commitment to local hunger relief.

BLACC Meet
For the past two years, Black Leaders and Collaborators Collective (BLACC), Giant Eagle’s resource group for Black employees, has volunteered at food banks across Ohio and Pennsylvania near MLK Day to honor the activist’s legacy and his passion for community service.
Volunteering has helped the group bridge connections across different stores and regions. Team members, store leaders and regional executive leaders all come together to support a common cause: feeding people and fighting hunger.
BLACC’s hunger-relief efforts have helped provide thousands of meals for families struggling with hunger. The Foodbank is so appreciative of their service and support.
22
“It feels phenomenal to give back,” said Shoncey Prophet, BLACC’s president and Giant Eagle store leader. “No matter a man's journey, it's important to remember that everybody goes through things in life. Volunteering puts things into perspective.”
New! Volunteers who contribute a minimum of 100 hours or volunteer 25 times in a calendar year are part of the elite Can-Do-Crew. This small but mighty group contributes more than 40% of the volunteer hours served at the Foodbank!
