acsa is the forum for ideas on the leading edge of architectural thought
President’s Message
Dear Colleagues, With the 2010–11 Prospectus, we are increasingly mindful of architecture’s unique responsibilities to the grand challenges of our era—energy, the environment, information, health, urbanization, and the economy, These problems have become the nexus of student and faculty achievements in teaching, research, design, and service. In view of rapidly changing conditions for practice, ACSA remains steadfastly committed to increasing the effectiveness of professional education. On the eve of our 100th anniversary, we take great pride in our contributions to the advancement of professional knowledge, in our sustained record of civic engagement, and in our conviction that through skillful and informed design and research we can directly and steadily raise the quality of life for our own and neighboring communities. The ACSA Board of Directors and staff continue to implement programs that engage the critical issues facing architectural education. Since 1912, ACSA has evolved to reflect the rich diversity of its membership through publications, conferences, and competitions. As you will see in the following pages, these programs and publications offer diverse opportunities for you to help the faculty and students at American and Canadian schools of architecture fulfill their potential. Today more than ever we need to work together. We therefore seek your direct partnership and support, and we look forward to future collaboration with you in this vitally significant effort. Association of collegiate schools of architecture Organization Overview
The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) is a non-profit, membership association founded in 1912 to advance the quality of architectural education. The school membership in ACSA has grown from ten charter members to over 200 schools in several membership categories. In addition, over 500 supporting members, composed of architecture firms, product associations and individuals, add to the breadth of interest and support of ACSA. ACSA provides a forum for ideas on the leading edge of architectural thought. Issues that will affect the architectural profession in the future are being examined today in ACSA member schools. This prospectus highlights the various programs, projects, and resources ACSA provides throughout the year that enable this dialogue. ACSA advances architectural education through five primary means: advocacy, annual programs (including conferences, international design competitions, and awards), liaison with professional architectural organizations, dissemination of information (through the ACSA News), and response to the needs of member schools (through the ACSA website). By partnering with ACSA you are showing your commitment to excellence in education, architecture, and in the cultivation of our future leaders. Read on to discover how you can join ACSA in moving the profession of architecture forward.

Member Resources ACSA provides countless resources to our members throughout the academic year. The two largest are the ACSA News and the ACSA Website. These publications provide time-sensitive material that ACSA members look to each month. Advertising in both is a great way to get your information in front of faculty, practitioners, students, and other leading industry partners. Visit www.acsa-arch.org and www.archschools.org ACSA News ACSA News provides direct access to over 4,000 faculty in ACSA full-member and affiliate schools. Published monthly during the academic year (September through May), ACSA News is an essential resource for information on activities in architectural education, including ACSA conferences, competitions, and other activities. News on events, people, and organizations in architectural education appear regularly, as do scores of ads for open positions in architectural education and related programs in North America and around the world.
ACSA websites The ACSA website, visited 30,000 times monthly, offers a vast collection of teaching resources, conference and competition archives, job listings and much more. ACSA continues to expand its website by providing useful member resources and daily news updates. Additionally, last year ACSA launched an online edition of the Guide to Architecture Schools, which allows users to search all member schools using criteria such as degree type, areas of concentration, and student and faculty demographics. This site is the only comprehensive survey of all schools of architecture across North America and is a priceless resource to countless students, parents, guidance councilors, and teachers
Teaching Resources One of ACSA’s primary focuses is fostering excellence in teaching by providing resources that professors can use directly in their classrooms. From material case studies to developing software skills, ACSA is an ideal partner in advancing teaching materials in architecture. ACSA also produces the Junior Faculty Handbook and the New Administrators Handbook, which offer guidance for teaching, research, administration, and service. The projects listed below are prime examples of the type of work ACSA seeks to continue. Architecture and Plastic ACSA and the American Chemistry Council developed a website to decode the relationship between architecture and plastic. The sites resources, surrounded by technical fact, historical fact, and design concept, provide faculty and students of architecture a starting point for plastic deployment, interrogation, and experimentation. The creation of this resource is part of an ongoing initiative by the ACSA to create case study curriculum materials for architecture faculty and students. Visit www.acsa-arch.org/plastic
Integrating a Studio ACSA partnered with AutodeskŠ to create a video highlighting how emerging design and project delivery methods are taught in the studio. These methods, leveraged by powerful building information modeling technologies, involve early collaboration with the full spectrum of participants in design, engineering, and construction. In the studio, this translates into similar experiences, encouraging collaborative work among disciplines and teaches students to produce a comprehensive architectural project facilitated by building information modeling.

ACSA100 In 2012 ACSA will celebrate 100 years at the forefront of architectural education. Since its foundation, ACSA’s membership has evolved to reflect the rich and diverse mosaic of schools in North America and across the globe. Through conferences, publications, competitions, and interaction with collateral organizations, ACSA has evolved into the leading contributor to the advancement of architectural education through discourse, scholarship, and action. To commemorate its centennial, ACSA has planned the following four initiatives. Visit www.acsa100.org Scholarly Book Two Centuries of Architecture Education Editor Joan Ockman, emeritus Columbia University
Online Exhibit Building Communities Curator Maia Thurlow Small, Thurlow Small Architecture
This history of architectural education in North America, the first comprehensive overview on the subject, will trace the evolution of architectural training in the United States and Canada from its origins to the present. The book will include contributions by nearly three dozen distinguished historians, leading educators, and emerging scholars, generously illustrated with original documents, and new graphic material. Joan Ockman, noted architectural historian and teacher, will serve as editor.
The online exhibit is intended to promote the value that an architectural education can bring to its students and the communities in which they live and work. Through a cutting-edge interactive interface, the exhibit will explore architectural education’s significant achievements in North America and showcase its value, interest, and opportunities for all. The projected audience—prospective students and their parents, K-12 educators, and community leaders—will use the exhibit to discover architecture schools in action and how design excellence engenders values such as social justice, diversity, quality of life, sustainable living, and civic leadership.
Theme Issue Journal of Architectural Education The Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) has been the primary venue for research and commentary on architectural education since it was founded in 1947. In 1982, the JAE established a blind-peer-review process, making it the oldest continuously operating journal of its kind. In 2012, the JAE will publish a theme issue, allowing educators worldwide to contribute to the discourse generated by the centennial.
Meeting 100th ACSA Annual Meeting The centennial celebration will culminate in Boston, MA, for a conference hosted by one of the first schools of architecture, and one of ACSA’s founding members, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as the other schools in the region.

Competitions ACSA continues its long precedence in creating and providing design competitions for students and faculty. ACSA competitions are national and international in scope, offering unique opportunities to investigate, develop, and challenge systematic approaches to design. Entries are critiqued and judged by a jury of experts. Competitions also assist instructors with developing a range of design challenges for use in their courses. See below for past examples of sponsored competition. Visit www.acsa-arch.org/competitions Green Communities This competition expanded on themes from the National Building Museum’s exhibits Green Community, Big and Green, and Green House. With the support of McGraw-Hill Construction and the American Institute of Architects. 1,200 students from architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture, explored sustainable planning strategies such as brownfield redevelopment, transit-oriented communities, natural resource management, and land conservation. They were challenged to develop proposals for a flourishing and sustainable community.
New Visions of Security This competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and supported by the DFW Airport Planning Department, American Airlines, and Corgan Associates, focused on the “re-life” of American Airlines’ Terminal A at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Students were challenged to explore concepts that reorganized and clarified the terminal’s functional order, operations, and reinforce passenger way-finding. The entries provided a broad array of solutions to address the major issues of terminal security, functional circulation, architecture, and sustainability.
RE-LIGARE INSTITUTE Now in its 10th year, the American Institute of Steel Constructions sponsored steel design competition challenges over 1,400 students to explore a variety of design issues related to the use of steel in design and construction. This year’s program was used in over 55% of the accredited architecture schools across North America and encouraged students to consider the ethical, aesthetic, and critical issues facing contemporary civilization. Previous Competition Sponsors Portland Cement Association; Wood Products Council; Brick Institute of America; Metal Construction Association; Otis Elevators; White House Millennium Council; Department. of Energy; US State Department.; Wimberly Allison Tors & Goo; Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects; Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co.
