Adult Education Program Spring 2011 CLASSES/WORKSHOPS Course 1
Create with Clay Mondays 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Course instructor Paulina Cassimatis (paulina.cassimatis@gmail.com), of White Touch Studio in Athens, describes the course this way: Figurative work and its possibilities in what it can express has always fascinated me. Coming from Greece, a country with such a strong heritage in classical sculpture -- and after being exposed to it and having studied it closely -- I find myself completely involved in the process of making a statue in the most traditional way. I believe that our deepest needs and emotions do not change through time: thus a work of
art that was made in the past and had touched people years ago is able communicate feelings and ideas upon us today. My use of the body is to expose the human condition. The way it is composed can be a carrier of meaning and a reflection of our physiology. I invite people of all ages and of all states of mind to come and work towards finding ways of expression. I invite you to spend two hours a week of creative playing with clay. I will teach you how to work with this magical, simple and most earthly material in order to give form to it and make it breathe. Location: Academy Art Studio Course dates: Feb. 14, 21, 28; March 7,14,21,28; Apr. 4, 11; May 2,9,16 Course tuition: 180 euros (12 2 hr. classes) Minimum enrollment: 6

Creative Movement Mondays, 4:00 – 5:00
About the Feldenkrais Method of Movement Education: “Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the quality of the process and you improve the quality of life itself.” -Moshe Feldenkrais The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of movement education which uses gentle, structured movement and directed attention to facilitate movement and enhance
human functioning and well-being. It is named after its originator, Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), an engineer and physicist as well as Judo teacher. Through movement exploration and development of awareness, one discovers new efficient movement possibilities which can replace painful, effortful or inefficient movement habits. The benefits of such an approach can be various, ranging from relief from muscular pain and tension, easier breathing, improved posture, greater relaxation and ease in everyday activities to improved performance in sports, dance, music and drama. The method has also been very helpful in dealing with central nervous system conditions as well as developmental, learning and behavioral challenges. About the afternoon classes: The aim of these series of movement lessons is to introduce the participant to the interesting learning process of the Feldenkrais Method and more specifically Awareness Through Movement lessons and to give him/her the opportunity to experience the physical and mental benefits that the method can offer. The specific series of lessons that we will be dealing with focusses mainly on the function and mobility of the spine aiming to provide more comfort and coordination in the way one uses his/her back daily. During the lesson the participants will mainly lie on the floor or experience movement in other positions such as standing, sitting or walking. Each lesson can be thought of as a unique movement exploration in which one is not only moving, but also sensing, thinking, imagining and feeling at the same time. ―Making the impossible possible, the possible easy and the easy graceful‖. Writers’ Workshop: Playing With Words
Monday mornings, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (Course 6A) Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (Course 6B)
Join us to play with words to create stories you have always wanted to tell. Together we will cover different elements of Fiction: Setting, Character, Point of View, Dialogue, Plot, etc. This workshop is designed to motivate the writer in all of us, and its focus will be to help each of us discover our own writing voice and style. New and published writers are welcome.
We will use several techniques in class to tap into our thoughts/ideas for stories—free writing and writing prompts, including photographs, short story lines, poems, one line sentences, etc. Some outside reading may be required. (Short stories are often discussed in class as they pertain to style, character, voice, plot). Once we start producing work, participants may be asked to send their new writing to the group for an initial read before we meet in class. Group comments will provide constructive criticism, guidance for rewriting, and editing suggestions. The goal for the class is for each writer to have produced one piece of polished (thoroughly revised and edited) writing that will be ready for submission to a journal. Literary Journals with serious writing contests will be presented, so writers can know where to submit work. Group size: 6 - 8 participants per class. Paper/pen required for class. If there are any questions about the writing workshop please contact the instructor at: meli@hol.gr Amalia Melis is creator and organizer of the Aegean Arts Circle Creative Writing Workshops (fourteen writing workshops have been held to date).
