The benefits of chess to children are endless! It strengthens mental clarity, fortitude and stability. It develops decision making, patience and builds focused concentration. This course will provide lessons tailored towards the skills of the children, combined with supervised training games. Instructor Konstantinos Soultatis is a FIDE Chess Instructor. He has trained chess players of all ages and levels for more than 15 years. He is also an active chess player, team leader at the Kifissia Chess Club.

In this class, students will continue to explore the basics of spoken Chinese through dialogue, games, song and play. As they learn the language, they will also be introduced to aspects of Chinese culture. This is a


class for students with some prior study of the language. Instructor Yi-Nai Wang is originally from Taiwan. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from National Taipei Institute of the Arts, where she studied Piano Performance, Violin, and Chinese language. Each summer, she participates in the seminar “Chinese Language Research” at Tunghai University in Taiwan. She has over 10 years of experience in teaching Chinese language. T

Musical Theater/Grades 1- 5 Tuesday, 4:00 - 5:00p.m. Instructor: Ms. Katerina Mitakou Dates: Jan 31, / Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 / March 7, 14, 21, 28 / April 4, 25 / May 2, 9, 16 Cost: 120 euro; 14 sessions Minimum enrollment: 6 / Maximum enrollment: 15 In the Musical Theater class, students will have the chance to learn and perform songs and dances from such Broadway and movie musicals as Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Mama Mia, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, A Chorus Line, The Lion King, Cats, Annie, 42nd Street and other great, classic shows. This course is the perfect way to explore the fundamentals of musical theater in a dynamic and fun atmosphere. The program will lead to a performance at the end of class. Pi


Ballet / Grades K – 2 Wednesday, 4:00 - 5:00p.m. Instructor: Ms. Katerina Mitakou Dates: Feb. 1, 8, 22 / March. 1, 8, 22, 29/ April 5, 19, 26 / May 3, 10, 17, 24 Cost: 120 euros; 14 sessions Minimum enrollment: 6/ Maximum enrollment: 15 The ballet program for younger students gives students the chance to work their bodies as often as ballet technique requires and will lead to the performance of the students’ work in the Theater at ACS Athens in May-June. Lessons will be based upon classical ballet technique, free movement and character work. High quality training will aim to correct posture, balance, line of dance, space consciousness, strength, rhythm, repertoire and composition. Students will need to provide their own tights and dance shoes.

Instructor Katerina Mitakou has trained at Stella Mann College in London and has continued her studies in choreology, choreography, classical ballet, modern dance and musical theater. She has danced in many theater productions in London and Athens, has appeared in film and has choreographed a wide range of performances. She has trained actors and dancers at the professional level as well as young people. She is a Tutor of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.


Robotics for Beginners Grades 3 - 5 Monday, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm Instructor: Sana Kassem Dates: Jan. 30 / Feb. 6, 13, 20/ March 6, 13, 20, 27 / April. 3, 24 / May 8, 15, 22, 29 Cost: 140 euros; 14 sessions **Please note: These classes will run for 90 minutes, instead of the customary one hour. Parents must make arrangements to pick up their children at 5:30 p.m. instead of at 5:00 p.m.

We will be utilizing the Lego Education kit, WeDo Construction Set. The course will enable students to build and program simple LEGO models that are plugged into a computer. The set contains more than 150 elements, including a motor, motion and tilt sensors and the LEGO USB Hub combined with the Software and Activity Pack to carry out 12 theme-based activities. The objective of this activity is to introduce the student to basic programming as well as problem solving strategies. In each session the students will be involved in the development, building and programming of a LEGO WEDO robot. Students will work hands-on in teams to design, build, program and document their progress. Topics will include motor control, sensors, timing and timing sequences. Instructor Sana Kassem has been a chemistry and biology teacher at ACS Athens since 2004. She earned a B.Sc. in Biology and Chemistry from the American University of Beirut and an M.Ed. from the University of LaVerne, Athens. She has taught biology and chemistry for IGCSE, A-level, AP, French Baccalaureate and IB classes in international schools in Beirut, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Athens. She has worked as an academic advisor for curriculum development in science, as Head of Science in Abu Dhabi, as an IB Examiner in Biology since 2000 and as an AP Biology examiner since 2014. She has been selected by IBO to be a team leader for IB Biology exams. In 2015, she took on the challenging task of teaching JK-5 experimental science in the ACS Athens Elementary School. She has worked to develop an inquiry-based science curriculum, the goal of which is to provide plenty of opportunities for children to experience hands-on learning in order to encourage and increase their curiosity and to instill in them a life-long love of science.


Making Moving Pictures: Introduction to Experimental Animation - Grades 3 - 5 Tuesday, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Instructor: Leda Tsoukia Dates: Jan. 31/ Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 / March 7, 14, 21, 28/ April 4, 25 May 2, 9, 16 Cost: 120 euros; 14 sessions This course gives students the chance to learn different techniques in experimental animation. We will begin with “camera-less” techniques (e.g. flipbooks, exquisite corpses*) and simple techniques that come from the kindergarten table (cut outs, stop-motion, painting on photographs or under lit clay etc.). Students will be given the chance to explore one of four topics: mythology, dreams, journeys and poetry/literature. The topic chosen will serve as a source of inspiration in answering the basic questions regarding the creation of an art piece: Where do I start? What should I create? What should I draw? Several short animated/and live action movies will be screened throughout the semester, providing a sampling of what other artists have created in the past.

Instructor Leda Tsoukia is a visual artist, designer and illustrator. She has a BA in Literature from the University of Athens, Greece, and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Animation and Digital Arts from the School of Cinematic Arts of the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. Leda has worked in education for several years, teaching Fine Arts and Design classes in the US as well as in Athens. She has been a freelancer in graphic design, and Illustration for more than 13 years, and has worked in various educational institutions as an Art Director. In 2004 she worked as a Designer and Project Manager for the ATHENS 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES Organizing Committee, and in 2011 as a Senior Designer for the Organizing Committee, Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011. In 2013, while working as the Art Director of Publisto LtD, she received the EVGE award for the UI design of an educational app for the iPad. Since September 2015, Ms. Tsoukia has been the Creative/Art Coordinator at ACS Athens.


Body Choir -- Grades 2 - 5 Friday, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Instructors: Nicholas Kotrokois and Natasa Hanta-Martin Dates: Friday, Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24/ March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 /April 7, 21 / May 5, 12, 26 Cost: 140 euros; 14 sessions **Please note: These classes will run for 90 minutes, instead of the customary one hour. Parents must make arrangements to pick up their children at 5:30 p.m. instead of at 5:00 p.m. Body Choir is an educational group concept, ideal for children & young people, which uses body movement to make music (rhythm, harmony, and song). Under the direction and guidance of specialized instructors, students will work collaboratively to produce and deliver a spectacular musical ensemble, by maximizing the capabilities of their bodies and the use of simple props and materials. The program embodies two creative artistic practices, choir-singing and the American dance-music genre, known as Body Music. These two art forms, when blended, create a unique educational platform that encourages students to coordinate music with movement in a setting of physical exercise. Following completion of the workshops, the students deliver their accomplishments in the form of a “Body Choir” showcase to family & friends. Invited by the Ministry of Education to conduct the children's choir at the Music Junior High School of Pallini. Director of Studies of the Conservatory-Centre for Music Studies "Ihomorphes" and Hellenic Conservatory of Vrilissia. Nominated for his work by the Union of Greek Musicians & Theatre Critics. Committee member of the Panhellenic School Choir Competition for 6 years. Taught Conducting Vocal Ensembles in the Music Department of the School of Fine Arts at Aristoteleio University in Thessaloniki. Natasa Hanta-Martin, Body Percussionist/Dance Instructor Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and of the Royal Academy of Dance (UK), dance teacher diplomas in Ballet, Modern, and Tap dance. Graduate of Panteion University (BA in Sociology). First Greek scholarship of the International Master’s in Dance Knowledge, in dance anthropology and ethnochoreology. Practice and Heritage (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway, Université Blaise-Pascal, France, University of Szeged, Hungary and Roehampton University, UK). Conducted numerous classes & workshops of African dance, rhythm tap, hip hop, contemporary, poppin’, lockin’, body percussion and flamenco.


Trained in percussive dances by tap dancer and body musician, Thanos Daskalopoulos. Seminars in Greece and abroad with the most important representatives of tap dance, body percussion, and body music (Max Pollak, Heather Cornell, Keith Terry, Roxane Butterfly, Simone Mongelli, Leela Petronio.

You may also bring the printed registration form to the ACS Athens Cashier and make payment directly to him. Registration must be accompanied by payment before a child can begin a class. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Garbis at 210-6393-200, ext. 302. If enrollment in an activity does not reach the minimum number of participants required for the class to run, the class will be cancelled, and you will be notified on Jan. 27th and your tuition will be returned.
