2013 Off Campus Housing Fair: Bringing Students Closer to Home

On March 20, 2013 the Rose Theater was filled with students, faculty and vendors for the Adult and Commuter student Services’ annual, off-campus housing fair. There were over 20 properties represented plus other companies like MLGW and Two Men and a Truck. Students who arrived early helped themselves to free donuts, pizza and goodies bags while they perused the tables. Volunteers passed out tote bags for students to gather information from the tables. Chris Snider, senior Communications major, said that the fair was a great resource in helping him find a new place. “The fair was a good way to do some apartment shopping without having to drive to each property. It seems like this is a good event for students especially since University of Memphis is mainly a commuter campus.” All of the vendors offered useful information about their properties including floor plans, utility costs, apartment amenities, and special offers on rent. Thanks to everyone who came out and participated in the event! Photos courtesy of University of Memphis

A Moment with the Director On April 4, 2013, the African and African American Studies and the Office of Diversity at the University presented the 37th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Rights Award and Scholarship program. During the event Ms. Linda Hall and Professor Kiel both received the MLK Award respectively and Ms. Margaret Ann Williams received the MLK Scholarship. These recipients are individuals who are always about the business of upholding the ideals of Dr. King i.e. racial equality, social justice and equal rights for all mankind. Congratulations to the 2013 MLK Award recipients. As we advance in this month’s array of activities let’s remember the historical legacy that Dr. King left us. You are just about one month from completing spring 2013 semester. How exciting! You are encouraged to complete all outstanding assignments i.e. papers, special projects, and any make up work, that are due. Then you can look forward to awards and honors programs just before beginning to prepare for final exams. After finals some of your will prepare for commencement , while others are making other summer plans. Many of our adult and/or commuters will look forward to working more hours, identifying and completing a summer internship, studying abroad, attending summer school or simply taking a summer break with friends and family. Decisions! Decisions!! Decisions!!! In this edition you will find helpful tips that can get you a great internship, ways to stay active and healthy, and a convenient spring exam schedule so you don’t miss those big tests. Enjoy the rest of the semester and have a great summer!

Tips on How to Get a Great Internship Jodie Cherry is the Assistant Director of the University Internship Program. She helps students get internships and offers some advice for those who are on the hunt for a great job opportunity. - When should a student start to look for internships? Should they wait until their last semester of school? We encourage students to begin thinking about internships their freshman year. Freshman and sophomore year are an important time to build your resume through volunteerism and campus involvement so that when the student is a junior, they are ready to apply. 56% of U of M students complete an internship in college. To stand out, students should really consider completing more than one internship. - What are some good resources that students can use to find an internship? There are several great places to look for internships. We have an office Facebook page where we list all new internships. We encourage students to like our Jodie Cherry, Assistant Director page, University of Memphis Office of Academic Internships. In addition, we also post all new positions in eRecruiting, which is the free online site all students can use to search for jobs and internships. This platform is hosted by Career Services. If a student is interested in signing up to use eRecruiting for the first time they can email Courtney Cook, cpierce2@memphis.edu. Another great way to find internships is through our weekly newsletter. Students can email jmcherry@memphis.edu to get added to the list to receive the weekly update. Most departments on campus have their own internship coordinator or contact. Connecting with this individual is also helpful. - What are things that students should look out for when applying for internships? I encourage students to intern at sites that allow them to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it in real life, meaningful work situations. It's always good to be able to intern at a place that gives the opportunity to participate in company meetings and attend networking events. In addition, its important to understand labor laws when accepting an unpaid internship with a for profit company. The U of M strongly encourages students to sign up to receive credit for their internships, especially if it is unpaid. - Should students get advised (through the career center) before they start applying for jobs or internships? It is always ideal to seek advice before applying for an internship. The Career Center offers support with resumes, cover letters, and job interview skills. We always encourage students to let several people look at their resume before they send it off to a potential employer. - Any advice on how to "stand out from the crowd" when it comes to applying for internships even if one doesn't have any previous job experience? My top 3 suggestions are to spend a lot of time volunteering, get involved on campus with professional development activities, and have either our office or the Career Center review their resume before submission. Many times students "under sell" themselves on their resume. Getting a second opinion can really make the difference. It is also important to have a strong brand on social media sites. Liked In, Facebook, and Twitter are all great places to connect with employers.

- Any advice for students who can get discouraged after applying to a few internships but not getting them? Internships are very competitive. The good thing is that the city of Memphis has amazing opportunities for students. The U of M also has a strong support system in place for students who want to intern. Over 2,500 students the U of M intern each semester, so as a university we are very good at helping students get placed. My advice is to change up your method of applying if it isn't working. Attending networking and internship/career fairs is a great way to make a good impression. What would you like to see featured in the Adult & Commuter Connection? Contact the editor, Amy Gregory, at

- Do you know which companies give out the most internships to U of M students? The larger corporations offer lots of positions, as well as the City of Memphis. Although the larger corporations have the capacity to provide the most internship opportunities, smaller businesses around Memphis also have a strong commitment to providing internships.

Dr. Heather Chambliss teaches Health and Sports Sciences at the U of M, so we sat down with her to talk about ways to get active this spring. What started your passion about teaching students to be healthy & active? I grew up loving sports. I use to take gymnastics and cheerleading and I even did competitive waterskiing during my college years at Louisiana Tech. My passion for sports and health sciences started there. Being healthy affects every aspect of one’s life, especially with students. When your healthy you are a better student, family member, and friend. It helps manage stress and develops relationships that can foster a good social outlook. Getting active can give you a great mental break in addition to helping your physical health. How should an adult student stay active? Multitask with your physical activity. Make dates and get your family involved. You have to make physical activity a priority then think about how it helps the things in your life that are important to you. For instance, focus on how it positively affects your relationships, betters your mental focus, or reduces stress. I think that if you can find your motivation and understand how activity helps achieve those goals. Find your fun as well. Other tips? Exercising has so many benefits, that there isn’t a good reason to find time to be active. Find what you enjoy doing (like biking with your kids or ultimate Frisbee) and it can help by giving you renewed energy. Everyone has so much on their plates, but taking the time to get active, like taking a 15 minute walk after lunch, makes a big difference. It’s not just getting your exercise in, you need to reduce your time spent sitting. Too much prolonged sitting causes metabolic changes in your body. So, if you sit all day and then go exercise for an hour, it won’t really change your metabolism.

Check out the Rec Center to get a fitness assessment and figure out a plan to get active!
