ID Theft higher among 18-24 year olds A March 2010 survey by The Washington Post reveals that people ages 18 to 24, known as the “core millennial” group, are “at the greatest risk because it takes them longer to figure out that they have been defrauded,” the survey said. According to the report, it takes young people an average 132 days to detect fraudulent activity on their accounts, allowing perpetrators to use their accounts for an average of five months. Michael Carter, U of M‟s Technology Coordinator for Student Affairs said that the key to keeping your online U of M information secure is by not sharing your passwords with anybody. “The main source of potential data compromise in any environment, be it educational, governmental, or private entity, is by social engineering hacking, also known as „tricking people into revealing their passwords,‟” he said. As far as protections on the U of M sites, Carter said that all the sites requiring entry of personal/confidential data are encrypted, preventing the physical interception of the data. Here‟s a list of how you can protect your information from identity theft:
1. DO NOT SHARE YOUR PASSWORDS WITH ANYBODY! Family, significant others, friends, your priest, etc. Those passwords are keys to your identity as much as your SSN is. 2. If you get an email purporting to come from your bank or creditor asking you to verify your username/ password/account number/etc. call the bank and verify that it‟s real and not a Phishing scam BEFORE you fill it out and email it back. Usually it‟s a scam. 3. If you get a pop-up stating that you’ve won a free laptop/ipod/trip to Tahiti/etc., Don‟t answer it, it is ALWAYS a scam. 4. Avoid such things as SearchAssist toolbar, CouponBar, and other such add-ons. They WON‟T save you a ton of money, they won‟t make your browsing easier, and they won‟t win you a million dollars. Regardless of what they promise, they‟ll broadcast your info and IP to other scammers and you‟ll become a target. Cont. on pg 3
Reflections from our major events Over 800 students took advantage of everything our March 24th Housing Fair had to offer. 44 Memphis-area rental communities and service vendors showcased their amenities to students, faculty and staff right here on campus! On April 10th, 147 honor students were recognized for their scholastic achievements and were inducted to the Pinnacle National Honor Society. See photos of both events on pg. 5.

5. DO install and keep updated some form of Antivirus/Antispyware program like AVG, Symantec, Kaspersky, or McAfee. Stay with a known brand of antivirus. Many that just appear out of nowhere are actually malware and protect you from exactly nothing. 6. DO NOT fall for a pop-up that’s not from your antivirus package or that purports to be from Windows Security Center that says it has found a virus on your system. “Click here to
install our Antivirus program/remove the virus” will just install spyware on your system and make it unusable. 7. If you get an email telling you that you have an electronic greeting card awaiting pickup, DO NOT click the link in the email. Go to the purported card vendors site manually (type in www.hallmark.com in your browser for example), follow their pickup link and enter in the pickup info from the email there. If it‟s real, you get your card, if it‟s not, the site will tell you there‟s no such card to be picked up, at which point you‟ve avoided being infected. 8. Emailed credit card offers are usually scams.
