TRAIN TRACK TENSION

Students were unable to cross due to a stalled train.

Some students grew impatient with the delay.

If you are a U of M student, chances are you’ve already had an encounter with the train tracks on Southern Avenue. Those who use the General Parking areas on that side of campus are all too familiar with the risk of being trapped on one side of the tracks by the train. This can cause a significant problem when a train stalls, as is evidenced by the pictures. Most students act responsibly in regard to the tracks; however, there are times when even the most level-headed are desperate to get across, particularly when they are about to be late to class. Students climb under and over stalled cars; they also rush to beat approaching trains by foot or speed their cars over railroad crossings and through lowering safety arms. The train tracks pose a significant inconvenience to many. The University of Memphis may have found a solution to this problem. TDOT has given a $1 million grant to the university to research the possibility of building two pedestrian tunnels beneath the tracks. The two passages would be located near Campus School and the Alumni Mall near the Administration Building. Tunnel security issues, such as open hours and lighting, are also being studied. Find out what students think on page 2.

CAMPUS VOICES: Underpass the right idea? The University of Memphis recently received a $1 million grant from TDOT to study the benefits of building two underpasses beneath the railroad tracks on Southern. We wanted students’ opinion on whether this was the right solution to the train tracks issue.

Peter Formantes Sophomore, Nursing

“Trains are archaic. They should be banned.”

“It’s a waste of money, and they’ll probably raise our tuition for it.”

4 Abbey Hammond Junior, ESL/Early Childhood Education “I think it’s a good idea as long as people use it. If it will get rid of the “Brainy” ads, then I’m okay with it.”

Joseph Marino Senior; Biology, Chemistry & French “We should teach everyone to fly instead.”

2) Lizzie Liddell Sophomore, Nutrition “It’s a waste of money, and it’s not practical. People won’t use it. The train isn’t really that big a deal.”
