It’s the beginning of a brand new semester, and we all have a clean slate. This is the perfect time to start making some much needed changes in our lives, including the way we eat! Here are some tips to help you make healthier eating choices.
Eat a variety of foods. And not just a variety of chips, candy bars, and microwave meals! Choose foods with nutritional value, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fish, and lean meats. Try to fit whole grains, fruits, & vegetables in a daily diet. Most Americans don’t eat enough of these. Browse cookbooks or recipe websites to find new ways to spice up these nutrient-rich foods.
Eat moderate portions. If you keep portion sizes reasonable, it's easier to eat the foods you want while staying healthy. Check out nutrition labels to locate actual serving sizes. You might be surprised—did you know that a pint of ice cream is 4 servings?
Eat regular meals. Skipping meals usually leads to overeating later in the day. Also, try to avoid snacking as much as possible.
SPECI AL ARE AS OF INTEREST:
Don’t cut out everything you enjoy. Eating is for nutrition, but it can be for enjoyment, too! Foods that are high in fat, sugar, or salt can stay in your diet; just don’t eat them every day or in large portions. Balance your food selections. If you miss out on any food group one day,

make up for it the next. Your food choices over several days should fit together into a healthy pattern. And if you mess up one day, don’t panic. Just do better the next day.
Be aware of your diet pitfalls. Assess your eating habits. What foods are most tempting to you? What foods are you not getting enough of? Try to adjust your diet to be more balanced.

Maintain a healthy weight. The weight that's right for you depends on many factors including your sex, height, age and heredity. Consult with your doctor to discover your appropriate weight range. Maintain that weight through regular exercise and a healthy diet. Avoid drastic changes. It’s unrealistic to think that you can completely change an established eating pattern overnight. Incorporate slow changes, and take time to get used to them.
Remember, foods are not good or bad. Don't feel guilty if you love apple pie, potato chips, candy bars, or ice cream. Eat these in moderation, and choose other, healthier foods to provide the necessary balance for nutrition. Information from: http://primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/nutrition/10eattips.htm

Staff Spotlight: April Tyson April Tyson is the newly appointed Associate Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships at the University of Memphis. Her responsibilities include overseeing the Undergraduate Scholarship Office and the Customer Service areas within the Financial Aid Office.
Tell us a little about yourself: I started working in Financial Aid as a student worker in 1998 while pursuing my bachelor’s degree. I began working professionally in 2003 as a counselor in the Financial Aid Office. In 2005, I obtained my Master’s degree and became the Coordinator for Customer Service. This past September, I was promoted to Associate Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
What would you like students to know about your department? I would like students to know that receiving financial aid is not an overnight process. There is much more that happens behind the scenes to get them to a paid status and their aid refunds to them. Thus, it is important for students to apply early, submit documents in a timely manner, and check SPECTRUM frequently for updates.
What got you into this line of work? In my undergrad, I was very involved. I came to like working with my peers and helping other students out. Since I already had experience in Financial Aid, that was going to be my starting point.
What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time, I enjoy interior design and decorating. I love organizing spaces to make life more functional. I also love to watch movies.
What do you enjoy most about your job? What I like most is helping students be accountable for their financial aid responsibilities and allowing them to understand the importance of knowing what options are available to them to get their college education paid for.
Did you make a New Year’s Resolution? I usually do not make New Year’s resolutions. I simply try to achieve my goals as I come to them. What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with college students? Stay focused, and make the most of your college experience, as it will help you adapt to the working world and the people in it once you get out.
