2016 Off-Campus Housing Information Fair The Adult and Commuter Student Services Off-Campus Housing Information Fair is quickly approaching. The fair gives students the opportunity to learn more about off-campus housing communities and off-campus living resources.

Over 20 vendors will be at the housing fair, including leasing mangers from the Gather on Southern, The Stratum on Highland, University Crossing, Canterbury Woods, Highlander Properties, Riverset Apartments and more. The representatives will provide information on pricing, lease agreements, floor plans and amenities.

Memphis, Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) will also be in attendance to give students tips on how to preserve energy.

“It’s a real opportunity to engage in face to face conversation with leasing mangers regarding your apartment interests and the amenities you desire in an apartment. Take time to browse and pick up information about different apartment units, so you can make a wise decision about where you want to live if you’re planning to live off campus,” Stout said.

Hi Commuters!

I hope that all is going well for you. Spring Break is fast approaching and I am feeling optimistic in my thinking that you have made plans to take a real break and enjoy it.

This month is National Women’s History Month. I am sure that you know a special woman who has made a positive impact during your lifetime, whether she is your mother, wife, aunt, sister, grandmother, teacher or friend. We encourage you to celebrate that special woman and show her how much you appreciate her contributions. If you are available and on campus, take advantage of the Women’s History Month calendar of activities that’s featured in this edition.

It is also Irish American Heritage Month. Now let us combine Women’s History and Irish American Heritage Month and recognize the accomplishments of an Irish American, Colonel Eileen Marie Collins. During her 27 years of service in the Air Force/NASA career as an astronaut, she was the first woman to pilot a shuttle in 1995 in the first joint American/Russian Mission to the MIR Space Station.

We continue to appreciate and celebrate those who have served in the military in various capacities whether during war or in peace and discovery time(s).

Last but not least, be sure to attend our annual Off Campus Housing Information Fair on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Rose Theatre.

Lt. Cmdr. Brenda Robinson was the first African American female Navy pilot.

Robinson always had a passion for flying, initially wanting to become a flight attendant. In high school, she was encouraged to apply to Dowling College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautics. In 1980, she earned her pilot wings from the Navy flight school, becoming the first African American female Navy pilot.

Robinson retired from the Navy after 13 years and retired from American Airlines after 17 years. She completed 155 aircraft carrier landings and she flew in Desert Storm, among many other accomplishments. Robinson is an author, web designer, broker realtor and motivational speaker.

Colonel Eileen Marie Collins was the first woman to command a space shuttle mission. Collins’ parents, who were immigrants from Ireland, strongly supported her dreams of becoming a pilot; however, they did not have the funds to send her to college. But that didn’t stop Collins. She went on to pursue degrees at Corning Community College, Syracuse University and Webster University. She earned her pilot wings from Vance Air Force Base in 1979.

Collins officially became an astronaut in 1990 and the first woman to pilot a space shuttle in 1995. She was also the first woman to command a space shuttle mission (STS-93) in 1999. Collins retired from NASA on May 1, 2006 after 38 days, 8 hours and 10 minutes in space. She has a husband and two children.

Celebrating Irish-American Heritage Month!

March celebrates the achievements and culture of Irish immigrants and their descendants who live in America.

Our common values and shared vision for the future laid the foundation for an eternal friendship between Ireland and the United States, and today, daughters and sons of Erin continue to enrich our Nation. This month, we reaffirm the bonds of affection between our two great countries, and we honor the courage and perseverance of the Irish-American community.”-President Barack Obama Be sure to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 and wear green or you’ll get pinched!

There’s safety in numbers. If you are an inexperienced traveler, make sure you take family and friends with you. Criminals can sense when someone is unfamiliar with an area, which puts you more at risk for danger. Keep someone with you at all times, even if you’re just going to the hotel’s vending machine.

Sharing is not always caring. We know it’s cool to share your location on social media, but it can also put you in danger. Thieves will know exactly where you are, giving them the opportunity to rob you. Furthermore, it can help serial rapists target victims.

Alcohol can impair your judgement and actions. To avoid alcohol poisoning, accidents, DUIs or even worst, car accidents, limit your alcohol intake while on vacation. Your senses need to be alert and you need to have a grasp on your actions while in a foreign environment. Also keep in mind, the alcohol age limit is 21 and older.

Put your money in a money pouch that can easily be concealed under your clothes.

Don’t have your wallet or purse visible; it makes it easier for thieves to target you.

Also, make sure you protect your pin number at the ATM and take your receipt.

It never fails. When you’re on vacation, someone always forgets to fully charge their phone, drops their phone in the water and/or cracks their screen. In this technology savvy generation, we rarely remember phone numbers anymore, but you need to, especially on vacation. Have a list of emergency contacts and memorize the numbers before your vacation starts.

March is all about savoring the flavor of eating right! This month we encourage you take control of your health and pursue healthy eating habits. ChooseMyPlate.gov offers great advice on how to kick start a healthy lifestyle and how to balance your plate.

Eat More Fruit  Keep a bowl of whole fruit on the table, counter, or in the refrigerator.  Refrigerate cut-up fruit to store for later.  Buy fresh fruits in season when they may be less expensive and at their peak flavor.  Buy fruits that are dried, frozen, and canned (in water or 100% juice) as well as fresh, so that you always have a supply on hand.

Choose Whole Grains

Enjoy Vegetables

 To eat more whole grains, substitute a whole grain product for a refined product – such as eating whole-wheat bread instead of white bread or brown rice instead of white rice.

 Buy fresh vegetables in season. They cost less and are likely to be at their peak flavor.

 For a change, try brown rice or whole -wheat pasta. Try brown rice stuffing in baked green peppers or tomatoes and whole-wheat macaroni in macaroni and cheese.  Use whole grains in mixed dishes, such as barley in vegetable soup or stews and bulgur wheat in a casserole or stir-fry.

 Stock up on frozen vegetables for quick and easy cooking in the microwave.  Buy vegetables that are easy to prepare. Pick up pre washed bags of salad greens and add baby carrots or grape tomatoes for a salad in minutes. Buy packages of veggies such as baby carrots or celery sticks for quick snacks.  Vary your veggie choices to keep meals interesting.

Make Smart Dairy Decisions

 The leanest beef cuts include round steaks and roasts, top loin, top sirloin, and chuck shoulder and arm roasts.

 Include milk or calcium-fortified soymilk (soy beverage) as a beverage at meals. Choose fat -free or low-fat milk.

 The leanest pork choices include pork loin, tenderloin, center loin, and ham.

 If you drink cappuccinos or lattes — ask for them with fat-free (skim) milk.

 Choose lean ground beef. To be considered "lean," the product has to be at least 92% lean/8% fat.

 Have fat-free or low-fat yogurt as a snack.

 Buy skinless chicken parts, or take off the skin before cooking.

 Top cut-up fruit with flavored yogurt for a quick dessert.

 Make fruit-yogurt smoothies in the blender.
