Saturday, November 22nd. The University of Memphis hosted a Military Appreciation Game in support of our Veterans. Chris Fears (Middle), president of the Student Veterans Organization, presented Dr. Rudd (Left), with Veterans coin for his continued dedication to the Military Service and Veterans.
A Safety Tip for Commuters At the University of Memphis, according to collegestate.com, 73 percent of the students commute to and from school which makes it a primarily commuter campus. During the Holidays, most commuters spend a lot of time traveling. However, the most important aspect of students traveling is safety. As Thanksgiving Break is approaching and Christmas Break is about a month away, there will be a lot of traveling to different cities, states, Christmas parties and family gatherings. But commuters have to be mindful of their surroundings while they travel back and forth on the roads.
According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, there 92 road fatalities in Shelby County with 7,109 being injured in 2013. Also, National Safety Council, (NSC), said that Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day are the major holidays to have high numbers of traffic -related accidents or deaths. So as you travel, remember to know your limits when it comes to driving on the roads for long hours. As people commute, always remember to be safe and watch others, even though the other drivers are not looking. Written by Zachary Boyd:

Join us in the season to Be Thankful and to Celebrate the Holiday Season! As Thanksgiving approaches, we are more aware than ever that living in this world demands that we find ways to serve others without regard for personal costs or sacrifice. Helping others is a necessary component of human existence. Yes, indeed, gratitude for all that we have, compels us to work to enrich the lives of others. So, let us remember to continue to make other lives better by giving of our time, talent, and resources. We will find that when we give, we are always inspired to give more; and the richer our own lives become. We hope that you will find a way to give to someone that you feel really needs an extra smile or meaningful assistance. We have provided some community service opportunities and upcoming holiday events for your consideration during this season. We continue to show appreciation for our military men and women who served in our armed forces and aided in keeping us safe on American soil. We owe them a debt of gratitude that will always be remembered.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT ACSS: Can you explain your role and what your job title entails. My previous role was Associate VP of Alumni and Constituent Relations and Executive Director of the Alumni Association. My role now is Interim VP of External Relations and I have expanded duties. I’m heading up a division that of several departments such as Alumni Constituent Relations, Our University Communications Department and our Government Relations Department. So, where I was just working with one department —“interimly,” i’m working with 3. It’s a dream job. I have the best job on Campus ACSS: What are some of the activities and/or programs that your office has planned for Alumni? We are launching a new branding campaign for the University . We are also launching a new website. This semester we have been in the quiet phase of both of those projects working to move them forward such as working with Tammy Hedges Interim Vice President, External Relations focus groups. We want to be very collaborative in making sure we are repre& Executive Director, Alumni Association senting the University well, just to make sure this is the right fit and repreAlumni Association Life Member Office: 901-678-5314 sents who we really are. It has been 10 or 12 years since we have done a thedges@memphis.edu branding campaign. So I’m excited. You will see a more contemporary look, more focus on students and a more important relationship with the City of Memphis. ACSS: What are the University’s goals as far as Marketing and External Relations? We have the Social Media Campaign and we have concentrated on being more organized and getting our communication network in place and getting our social media handbook in place. It’s a very collaborative effort in people being able to voice their opinions and bring forth ideas . We are just working on becoming more organized in our divisions and our departments. ACSS: You are very successful in the event planning and coordinating field. You’ve won Awards. What is your secret? How are you so successful in planning events? The recognition really goes to the association and my team. I have always been fortunate that the staff surrounding me has been so talented and energetic . They truly represent the University of Memphis. They are fast, sufficient and fun to be with. They ARE the University of Memphis, so I really have to give all of that credit to the staff as well as the Alumni volunteers, Student Ambassadors, Student groups, interns and all of the people who have worked with us. ACSS: What is your involvement with the Veterans Resource Center and promoting events? Well I can’t take all of the credit for that either. It was really Jackie Rodriguez who headed up the event from Alumni. Several groups were involved. It was a collaborative effort with our Veterans Resource Center and also Midday Moves. Chris Honeycutt, the VRC Coordinator, Chris Fears, President of the Student Veterans Organization and Jackie Rodriquez were really the three people who executed the event. For several days our Student Ambassadors collected postcards for our troops, several thousands were gathered and several departments contributed items to send to the troops . Also, the Veterans Day shirts turned out to be very popular and we are working on selling the tshirts and the proceeds will go toward a scholarship for a Veteran.
