PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP Did you miss out on the recent ACSS workshop, Personal Financial Management? Don’t worry; we’ve got a recap of some of the most important information right here! Mrs. Cynthia Hampton of Clearpoint Financial Solutions gave students smart tips to stay financially sound: •
When deciding whether a purchase is necessary, ask yourself the following questions: * Do I really need it? * Do I really need it today? * What would happen if I don’t buy it now? * Can I meet this need less expensively?
•
Always review your bank and credit card statements to remind yourself where your money is being spent.
•
Get the most from what you already own before you buy more.
•
Do the math on small luxuries. For example, if your daily coffee and muffin cost only $20 a week, that comes to $1,040 a year.
•
Take advantage of student discounts. Watch for special deals on anything you need and are planning to buy: airline tickets, books, restaurants, entertainment, and clothes.
•
Be careful with credit cards. Remember, that’s not “your” money—it’s money you have to repay. Consider getting just one card with a low interest rate and a low spending limit. Use it for emergencies or planned purchases only.
• Tiger Technology seminar
•
Limit the cash you carry and shop with your budget in mind.
• Off-Campus Housing Website
•
Avoid eating out as much as possible.

SAFETY TIPS In September, the ACSS office hosted a “Staying Safe On & Off Campus” seminar. Here are some tips from U of M Officer Marco Anderson & the Shelby County Sheriff’s office to help you stay safe in the upcoming holiday season! •
When walking, carry purses/bags close to your body. This makes them harder to snatch.
•
Walk in groups, especially after dark. Avoid shortcuts and isolated or dark areas.
•
Walk purposefully and confidently, and always be aware of your surroundings.
•
Utilize Tiger Patrol, the on-campus escort service, between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. (901-678-HOME)
•
Park in high traffic areas or areas with a lot of pedestrians.
•
Always lock your car doors and try to keep bags & valuables out of sight or locked in your trunk.
•
Always check your back seat before entering your vehicle.
•
Keep your car’s fuel tank at least 1/2 full all the time.
•
Carry a limited amount of cash and credit cards.
•
Try to avoid using your cell phone while driving, in order to remain alert.
•
Be proactive, not reactive.
•
Opportunity is a thief's best friend.
STUDENT REACTIONS (from the ACSS Staying Safe seminar)
“The things that I learned to ensure my safety off campus were to never travel alone, always lock my doors, walk with a purpose, and keep an eye out for my surroundings.”
NEED A JOB FOR SPRING?
Brock McWhorter
“I liked how he gave safety tips for living on campus and also for students who commute since I live at home.” Natalie Hickman
“I feel so safe on campus knowing that the Tiger Police are only a call away!” Eden Schweigler
“Now I’m always looking out for strange cars or people, and every time I walk up to my car I look underneath it. Our campus police and the sheriff’s office were really helpful.” Erin Kelley
