Knowing Where and When to get the Best Deals At this time and age, the internet has pretty much turned itself into a huge marketplace. We turn to it before leaving the house to look for sales, deals and anything useful that will make our college experience easier and more enjoyable. But before you turn to the internet to stock up in academic supplies, make sure you watch for key security signs to protect your identity, your money and your computer.
- Know when to buy your items. Black Friday and the week after Christmas are known to have great deals this time of the year, stores -wide and online as well. Be mindful of shipping around the holidays. If you need an item for the first day of classes, you might not want to order the week before via standard shipping.
- Shop around before you buy. Not everything is cheaper or better because it is purchased online. And the good thing about it is that you can do your research online and if it is cheaper at a store, you Protect your identity: - If you receive an offer via e-mail, do not click on the link, instead, can just go there and get it. type the address on your browser, that way you know where you are truly buying from. Protect your computer: - Run an update on your browser if needed. - When receiving confirmation e-mails, make sure the name, spelling and word capitalization match the ones on the website. Beware - Make sure you have an anti-virus software like McAfee or AVG of e-mails and website scams that will look exactly like the originals (free at free.avg.com). Set it to run frequently or manually run a but will have the name of the company in lower case or misspelled. virus scan every so often. Do not ignore that, it is a possible scam (ex: Paypal vs. paypal). - Clear your browser’s cache often. If you are a heavy computer Protect your money: user, run it once a week. If not, run it every couple of weeks. If you - Before entering your credit card number, look at the website addon’t know how to do it, google “how to clean cache in ____ (your dress in your browser. A secure site should start with “https://” inbrowser, ex. Explorer, Safari, Firefox...).” stead of “http://.” If you do not see the S of secure, run! If the worst happens: - If you are buying from an individual, pay a great deal of attention - Do not hesitate to call the authorities and your bank. Find out what to how many stars sellers have and how long they’ve been selling. the damage is and how else you can protect yourself. The worst Read the item’s description carefully (ex. Is something missing, like thing you can do is: nothing. Be savvy! a cover or a cd?) and read previous buyers’ feedback.

Parking cont. from the front page. Hall parking. It will be tied with the existing general parking lot number 253 and a Police Service Station will be implemented. A gate will be added to the lot and it will also be repaved and receive more lighting. The third project will turn lot 32, located on Patterson Street across Johnson Hall, into a residential parking area for West Hall. The existing building will be demolished and the area will be turned into parking spaces and some meter spaces will be added for easy access to Wilder Tower. The fourth project will be done on lot 17, across the tracks, along Patterson and Southern streets. The final version of that parking lot is pending the final drawings from the Tennessee Board of Regents. Floyd said that as soon those drawings arrive, Parking Services should be ready to move forward with that project. “People now park all over the place in that area,” said Floyd. “We are eager to re-strip, re-pave and add more light to that lot which should gives us 31 additional spaces at that location. We have other projects in the works for students that we can not unveil at this point, but I want commuter students to know that we are thinking about them.” Check out the U of M’s Parking Map

Web 2.0 Workshop What did you learn from it? Presenter Kristy Conger from the U of M’s Advanced Learning Center captured student’s attention from beginning to end by introducing cutting edge and free Web 2.0 tools. “I will definitely use the online word processor — Zolio, Slidebloom for presentations and Animoto to build videos,” said Christina Nolte, freshman, undecided major. “I will go to the websites she went over like Toolbox and use them for schoolrelated things,” said Brooke Day, freshman, undecided major. GA Workshop Coordinator Jeremy Houston said, “Evaluations demonstrated that students found impressive the variety of free technology on the web and were enthusiastic about incorporating these technologies into their academic coursework.” 79% attendees said this workshop will benefit their education and future success. The entire presentation is available on podcast at our website: www.memphis.edu/acss/.

Finding An Agent That’s Right For You
Q: What is your motivation? A: My mother. She is an inspiration. We are very close and she was the reason why I chose the U of M. Even though her health issues limit her to certain extents, she is courageous and strong. Q: What do you enjoy the most about being a commuter? A: I have my own space and don’t have to share my bathroom with anyone. Even though parking is not great and I don’t enjoy the walking, I find myself staying on campus rather than off most of the time.
Q: What are your challenges as a commuter at U of M? A: Gas prices (laughter). During my freshman year I was not very involved and didn’t have many friends. But as time went by I got acquainted with people and organizations so that problem took care of itself. Actually, most of my friends are international students. I really enjoy the diversity at U of M. It was something I didn’t expect to find here but I did. Q: What do you get to do as part of the SGA? A: I love being with the SGA. I get to advise the president from a commuter’s perspective. Our last discussion was where to hold certain SGA events and I was able to make sure commuter students would find appropriate parking spaces if they choose to attend. We were able to define the location based on that criteria. Q: How can commuters get more involved on campus? A: I would suggest getting involved in something you are unfamiliar with. Attend a Registered Student Organizations (RSO) fair that happens every August and January. Go to the meetings, read the information and learn what the organizations are about. It will help you determine which ones are or are not for you. Q: What is your next step after graduation? A: My major is Health Services Administration and my goal is to hold an executive position in a hospital. I like the idea of mixing business and health. I want to give back to my community. I like to help people live a better life by setting goals, following certain steps and achieving results.
It’s Party Time! Were you invited to a party but don’t know what to take ? Try these simple and delicious finger foods. Holiday Pretzel Treats What you will need: Bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels Hershey's Kisses or Hershey's Hugs M&M's candy
Santa Hats What you will need: 2 egg whites, at room temperature 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup sugar Red colored sugar
Heat the oven to 170F. Set a number of bite-size, waffle-shaped pretzels (one for each treat) in a single layer on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, then top each pretzel with an unwrapped Hershey's Kiss or Hershey's Hug.
Heat the oven to 200º F. With an electric mixer, beat the egg whites until soft peaks start to form. Beating all the while, add the cream of tartar and vanilla extract, then slowly add the 1/2 cup of sugar. Continue to beat until the peaks stiffen.
Bake for 4 to 6 minutes (the white chocolate will melt more quickly), until the chocolates feel soft when touched with a wooden spoon. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and quickly press an M&M's candy into the center of each Kiss.
Spoon the meringue into a quart-size plastic bag. Snip off a corner and pipe 2 dozen 1 1/2-inch-tall Santa hat triangles onto a parchment-lined baking sheet (you should have about 1/4 of the meringue left).
Allow the treats to cool for a few minutes, then place them in the refrigerator to set, about 10 minutes. Place handfuls of the candies in clear plastic bags and tie on colorful ribbons. — From Kitchen to Gift
Sprinkle the triangles with the red sugar, then use the remaining meringue to give each one a pom-pom and trim. Bake the hats until they're hard but not browned, about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave the hats in it for an hour to crisp before removing.— From Kitchen to Gift
