Dr. Rudd is an Army Veteran and has done a lot of academic research on them, including a study on student Veterans’ suicide risk. He said that he has a strong commitment to Veterans and recognizes the sacrifice and felt compelled to do research on their issues especially with suicide. According Dr. M. David Rudd to Dr. Rudd’s biography, he also helped get grant funding for University of Memphis research to support the military through the U.S. Army/ President Department of Defense Military Operational Medicine Research Program. Also, according to an article in the Memphis Business Journal, “U of M and University of Utah partner for veterans,” he has created a partnership with the University of Utah, (which he was dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science), to provide research for the National Center of Veterans Studies (NCVS). Although Dr. Rudd has taken this new role as president, according to an office of the President article, he will still be working with the NCVS to research and develop methods to improve the lives of veterans around the U.S., and plans to implement new initiatives and projects on campus. Dr. Rudd not only has a passion for helping Veterans but for all students. “They are a critical part of our community and we want to give them a quality education and we want to look at their unique needs to find a way to best help them, “he said.
