Herd Genetics If you have ever wondered about your herd genetics you can now call DairyCo and they can create a Log in for you so you can review your own herds genetics and get their help to try and improve your herds genetics. Membership reminder Membership subscriptions were due on 1st January 2015. Please forward payment if your membership still remains outstanding. Should membership not be paid in full you may not receive future mailings and it will delay any registrations being processed.

Postal address Please can we ask that when sending post to the office that the full society name is stated on the envelope, for example Shorthorn Society not SS as abbreviated post often goes to the incorrect building.

We now have a Dairy Calendar on the Shorthorn Society Website which can be accessed from the Home page, click on the arrow beside the month of the year to view different months, please call Claire if you need any help. This calendar displays all the years shows and events. If you wish to add a regional event to the calendar please call or emailclaire@shorthorn.co.uk at the office with all the details.

Photo Competition The photographic competition takes place again this year so don’t forget to get good photographs of your best cows throughout the summer. Professional photographs are accepted and there is a class for scenic photographs too. Entry forms and class details will be available in the near future from both the website and the office. Entry forms must be completed and signed by the exhibitor only, no telephone entries or late entries will be accepted so make sure you prepare your self in plenty of time and good luck.

Journal 2016 We are already compiling reports for the journal, if you have any Regional events or competitions please let us have reports and photos as soon as possible after the event. Same with shows, please send in any results, judges reports & photos as we can then begin formatting parts of the journal throughout the summer.

AGM and Judging Day This years AGM and Judging day will be held on Saturday June 13th 2015 at Pearn Wyatt & Son, Grange Farm, Snetterton, Norwich,Norfolk,NR16 2LA: The AGM will be held at 12 noon followed by Lunch, Judging and finally the Herd Visit. Master judge to be G Madeley. This is a great opportunity for all members to learn more about judging cattle and to practice reason giving. We would urge all young members who are interested in cattle judging to come along and have a go. The society does not require judges to attend the judging day in order to remain on the judging panel but the judges committee are very keen to encourage all existing judges to attend and brush up their judging skills. If you wish to attend please contact Claire at the office so numbers can be calculated ready for the day. Gold Cup

Gold Cup Entries close at the end of May. We have included an entry form with this Newsletter. Any animal which qualifies for a diploma will be automatically entered for the Gold Cup and all diploma winners will be listed in the journal as well as receiving a star for the star brood cow list. The winner will be presented with the Gold Cup at the National Dairy Shorthorn Show presentations at the Cheshire Show. Diplomas are awarded for consistent milking and regular breeding and many of you will appreciate how difficult it is to achieve the required standards, so if you have animals which qualify it is a very commendable achievement which deserves to be published.

The Star Brood Award Scheme benchmarks a Shorthorn cow on her ability to produce consistent yields combined with fertility, longevity, type and successfully transmitting these traits through to her progeny. Stars are awarded for gaining milk diplomas which incorporates constant production with regular breeding. A star is also awarded when a cow reaches a lifetime yield of 50,000kgs, 75,000kgs and two stars for 100,000kgs. Every time a cow is classified excellent and any progeny that achieves an excellent
