Gold Cup and how to enter

Rebranding of Red Cattle Genetics (RCG)

These Competitions were inaugurated in 1926, largely through the efforts of the President of the Dairy Shorthorn Association for that year, the late Mr JL Shirley: the necessary funds being subscribed by a number of firms and individuals in response to a personal appeal by Mr Shirley who was himself a generous contributor. The Council, therefore, directed that the trophies should be known as the “1926” Gold Challenge Cups. The Gold Cup is awarded annually to the Overall Winner of the Competition. So do you have any cows which meet the criteria for entry into the Annual Gold Cup Competition? To qualify a Cow must have:

Red Cattle Genetics or RCG as it is known by many is being rebranded to Shorthorn Sires UK. Its official launch will be underway during the spring of 2017. The newly named Shorthorn Sires UK will help to provide a future proof identity for the business especially with the decision to close the herd book from January 2018. There will be a new-look logo which gives brand identity and encompasses a fresh approach to the wide selection of Shorthorn semen available, both beef and dairy. More information on this rebrand will be available in the forthcoming Dairy Shorthorn Journal. Our new website will be: www.shorthornsiresuk.co.uk Orders can still be placed in the usual way by calling or emailing Claire at the office or email sales@shorthornsiresuk.co.uk

The competition runs one year behind so for 2017 the last calf must be born before 31 st December 2016. Any entries where the calf is born after this date will be submitted for the next Competition if they meet the above criteria. - the closure date for entry is the end of May each year and the Winners are announced at the National Show in Cheshire in June. If the animal meets the criteria they will receive a Diploma Certificate and Star on their pedigree. The Star Brood Cows list is displayed in the journal each year. If you wish to enter please complete the Gold Cup Diploma Entry Form which can be downloaded from the website or call the office and return it accompanied by the milking lactation records and a cheque for £5 & VAT (£6) for each animal.

Old Coates Herd Books/ Ledger If these may be of interest to you contact joel.trott@joelrichmond.co.uk as he has old Herd Books from 1940`s to 1960`s and peterlake-001@hotmail.co.uk has an old ledger from 1929.

Genomic testing Following a decision made by the Dairy Shorthorn council, from January 2017 we will start to gather DNA from all bulls registered with the society to start a genomic screening programme. More details regarding this can be found in the forthcoming Journal. The society have pledged to part fund the programme to help gather information with results analysed by the AHDB genetics team. The new registration fee will be £50 & VAT (£60) for bulls up to 3 months then after this is usual late fees apply (as stated in the back of the journal) Members will be required to provide a hair follicle sample when registering a bull. Sample bags can be obtained from the society office to submit hair follicle samples. It is imperative that the hair bulb/root is collected within the sample by plucking 10, 20 or 30 hairs from the mid-section of the tail switch. Make sure they are fairly coarse hairs with large sized follicles to provide sufficient quantities of DNA to analyse. The hair must be CLEAN and free of manure. Please submit this sample with a completed registration slip to Claire at the office.

Photographic Competition results Please see the Dairy Shorthorn Website for a full set of results plus it will also be available in the forthcoming Dairy Shorthorn journal.
